We present an interstellar medium and stellar population analysis of three spectroscopically confirmed $z>7$ galaxies in the ERO JWST NIRCam and JWST NIRSpec data of the SMACS J0723.3-7327 cluster. We use the Bayesian spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code \texttt{Prospector} with a flexible star-formation history (SFH), a variable dust attenuation law, and a self-consistent model of nebular emission (continuum and emission lines). Importantly, we self-consistently fit both the emission line fluxes from JWST NIRSpec and the broad-band photometry from JWST NIRCam, taking into account slit-loss effects. We find that these three $z=7.6-8.5$ galaxies ($M_{\star}\approx10^{8}~M_{\odot}$) are young with rising SFHs and mass-weighted ages of $3-4$ Myr, though we find indications for underlying older stellar populations. The inferred gas-phase metallicities broadly agree with the direct metallicity estimates from the auroral lines. The galaxy with the lowest gas-phase metallicity ($\mathrm{Z}_{\rm gas}=0.06~\mathrm{Z}_{\odot}$) has a steeply rising SFH, is very compact ($, 14 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore local and global dynamical differences between the kinematics of ionised gas and stars in a sample of galaxies from Data Release 3 of the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We find better agreement between local (i.e., comparing on a spaxel-to-spaxel basis) velocities and dispersion of gas and stars in younger systems as with previous work on the asymmetric drift in galaxies, suggesting that the dynamics of stars and ionised gas are initially coupled. The intrinsic scatter around the velocity and dispersion relations increases with increasing stellar age and mass, suggesting that subsequent mechanisms such as internal processes, divergent star formation and assembly histories also play a role in setting and altering the dynamics of galaxies. The global (flux-weighted) dynamical support of older galaxies is hotter than in younger systems. We find that the ionised gas in galaxies is almost always dynamically colder than the stars with a steeper velocity gradient. In absolute terms, the local difference in velocity dispersion is more pronounced than the local difference in velocity, possibly reflecting inherent differences in the impact of turbulence, inflow and/or feedback on gas compared to stars. Using Venice as a case study, this article seeks to analyse the experience of migrant workers in the hotel industry through a theoretical engagement with the local labour market segmentation approach. The global hotel industry relies on large numbers of migrant workers, who are often in their first job in the host context, as a solution to the problem of cyclical staff shortages. Previous studies have found that low barriers to entry into the sector and high staff turnover are the underlying reasons for this relationship. They have also shown that the same characteristics that make the hotel sector attractive to migrant workers also lead them to leave the industry shortly after entering it. However, this article reveals significant stability in the careers of migrants employed in Venetian hotels as well as heterogeneity in their individual experiences. Through identifying and analysing the factors underpinning the trajectories of these workers, the article emphasises the importance of local characteristics of production, consumption, institutional and welfare regulation patterns, workers’ social stratifications and strategies of social reproduction in shaping the relation between migrant workers and the local hotel industry.

We present SAMI-HI, a survey of the atomic hydrogen content of 296 galaxies with integral field spectroscopy available from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We investigate the impact of environment on the internal mass distribution of galaxies using the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral field spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey. We use 2D resolved stellar kinematics to construct Jeans dynamical models for galaxies at mean redshift $z \sim 0.3$, corresponding to a lookback time of $3-4$ Gyr. The internal mass distribution for each galaxy is parameterised by the combined mass density slope $\gamma$ (baryons $+$ dark matter), which is the logarithmic change of density with radius. We use a MAGPI sample of 28 galaxies from low-to-mid density environments and compare to density slopes derived from galaxies in the high density Frontier Fields clusters in the redshift range $0.29, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the change in mean stellar population age and metallicity ([Z/H]) scaling relations for quiescent galaxies from intermediate redshift ($0.60\leq z\leq0.76$) using the LEGA-C Survey, to low redshift ($0.014\leq z\leq0.10$) using the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We find that, similarly to their low-redshift counterparts, the stellar metallicity of quiescent galaxies at $0.60\leq z\leq 0.76$ closely correlates with $M_*/R_\mathrm{e}$ (a proxy for the gravitational potential or escape velocity), in that galaxies with deeper potential wells are more metal-rich. This supports the hypothesis that the relation arises due to the gravitational potential regulating the retention of metals, by determining the escape velocity required by metal-rich stellar and supernova ejecta to escape the system and avoid being recycled into later stellar generations. On the other hand, we find no correlation between stellar age and $M_*/R_\mathrm{e}^2$ (stellar mass surface density $\Sigma$) in the LEGA-C sample, despite this being a strong relation at low redshift. We consider this change in the age--$\Sigma$ relation in the context of the redshift evolution of the star-forming and quiescent populations in the mass--size plane, and find our results can be explained as a consequence of galaxies forming more compactly at higher redshifts, and remaining compact throughout their evolution. Furthermore, galaxies appear to quench at a characteristic surface density that decreases with decreasing redshift. The $z\sim 0$ age--$\Sigma$ relation is therefore a result of building up the quiescent and star-forming populations with galaxies that formed at a range of redshifts and so a range of surface densities., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Aims. We present a non-parametric morphology analysis of the stellar continuum and nebular emission lines for a sample of local galaxies. We explore the dependence of the various morphological parameters on wavelength and morphological type. Our goal is to quantify the difference in morphology between the stellar and nebular components. Methods. We derived the non-parametric morphological indicators of 364 galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) Survey. To calculate those indicators, we applied the StatMorph package on the high-quality integral field spectroscopic data cubes, as well as to the most prominent nebular emission-line maps, namely [O III]λ5007, Hα, and [N II]λ6583. Results. We show that the physical size of galaxies, M20 index, and concentration have a strong gradient from blue to red optical wavelengths. We find that the light distribution of the nebular emission is less concentrated than the stellar continuum. A comparison between the non-parametric indicators and the galaxy physical properties revealed a very strong correlation of the concentration with the specific star formation rate and morphological type. Furthermore, we explore how the galaxy inclination affects our results. We find that edge-on galaxies show a more rapid change in physical size and concentration with increasing wavelength due to the increase in the optical free path. Conclusions. We conclude that the apparent morphology of galaxies originates from the pure stellar distribution, but the morphology of the interstellar medium presents differences with respect to the morphology of the stellar component. Our analysis also highlights the importance of dust attenuation and galaxy inclination in the measurement of non-parametric morphological indicators, especially in the wavelength range 4000−5000 Å.

Galaxy spectra encode in their continuum and absorption/emission features a wealth of information on galaxy physics, mass assembly and chemical enrichment history. The 4MOST-StePS survey will collect high-quality spectra (with a median signal-to-noise ratio of about 30 Å–1, and resolution R ~ 5000) for a sample of about 3300 galaxies brighter than IAB = 20.5 within the RA-Dec-z footprint of the WAVES-Deep survey. These spectra will provide a precise empirical description of the evolutionary path of massive galaxies in the intermediate redshift range (0.3 < z < 0.7) between the LEGA-C and SDSS surveys. The locations of the galaxies within the cosmic web, unveiled by WAVES-Deep, will disclose the connection between galaxy properties and environment, down to the scales of galaxy pairs., Published in The Messenger vol. 190, pp. 22-24, March 2023.

We present a new set of index-based measurements of [$\alpha$/Fe] for a sample of 2093 galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Following earlier work, we fit a global relation between [$\alpha$/Fe] and the galaxy velocity dispersion $\sigma$ for red sequence galaxies, [$\alpha$/Fe]=(0.378$\pm$0.009)log($\sigma$/100)+(0.155$\pm$0.003). We observe a correlation between the residuals and the local environmental surface density, whereas no such relation exists for blue cloud galaxies. In the full sample, we find that elliptical galaxies in high-density environments are $\alpha$-enhanced by up to 0.057$\pm$0.014 dex at velocity dispersions $\sigma$, Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. We use the MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic survey of low-redshift galaxies to compare the stellar populations of the bulge and disc components, identified from their Sersic profiles, for various samples of galaxies. Bulge dominated regions tend to be more metal-rich and have slightly older stellar ages than their associated disc dominated regions. The metallicity difference is consistent with the deeper gravitational potential in bulges relative to discs, which allows bulges to retain more of the metals produced by stars. The age difference is due to star formation persisting longer in discs relative to bulges. Relative to galaxies with lower stellar masses, galaxies with higher stellar masses tend to have bulge dominated regions that are more metal-rich and older (in light-weighted measurements) than their disc dominated regions. This suggests high-mass galaxies quench from the inside out, while lower-mass galaxies quench across the whole galaxy simultaneously. Early-type galaxies tend to have bulge dominated regions the same age as their disc dominated regions, while late-type galaxies tend to have disc dominated regions significantly younger than their bulge dominated regions. Central galaxies tend to have a greater metallicity difference between their bulge dominated regions and disc dominated regions than satellite galaxies at similar stellar mass. This difference may be explained by central galaxies being subject to mergers or extended gas accretion bringing new, lower-metallicity gas to the disc, thereby reducing the average metallicity and age of the stars; quenching of satellite discs may also play a role., Accepted by PASA

Finding and characterising the first galaxies that illuminated the early Universe at cosmic dawn is pivotal to understand the physical conditions and the processes that led to the formation of the first stars. In the first few months of operations, imaging from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have been used to identify tens of candidates of galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 10, less than 450 million years after the Big Bang. However, none of these candidates has yet been confirmed spectroscopically, leaving open the possibility that they are actually low-redshift interlopers. We analyse the chemical properties of three z~8 galaxies behind the galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327, observed as part of the Early Release Observations programme of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Exploiting [O III]4363 auroral line detections in NIRSpec spectra, we robustly apply the direct Te method for the very first time at such high redshift, measuring metallicities ranging from extremely metal poor (12+log(O/H)~7) to about one-third solar. We also discuss the excitation properties of these sources, and compare them with local strong-line metallicity calibrations. We find that none of the considered diagnostics match simultaneously the observed relations between metallicity and strong-line ratios for the three sources, implying that a proper re-assessment of the calibrations may be needed at these redshifts. On the mass-metallicity plane, the two galaxies at z~7.6 (log(M*/M_sun) = 8.1, 8.7) have metallicities that are consistent with the extrapolation of the mass-metallicity relation at z~2-3, while the least massive galaxy at z~8.5 (log(M*/M_sun) = 7.8) shows instead a significantly lower metallicity . The three galaxies show different level of offset relative to the Fundamental Metallicity Relation, with two of them (at z~7.6) being marginally consistent, while the z~8.5 source deviating significantly, being probably far from the smooth equilibrium between gas flows, star formation and metal enrichment in place at later epochs., 13 pages, 7 figures. Large galaxy samples from multi-object IFS surveys now allow for a statistical analysis of the z~0 galaxy population using resolved kinematics. However, the improvement in number statistics comes at a cost, with multi-object IFS survey more severely impacted by the effect of seeing and lower S/N. We present an analysis of ~1800 galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey and investigate the spread and overlap in the kinematic distributions of the spin parameter proxy $\lambda_{Re}$ as a function of stellar mass and ellipticity. For SAMI data, the distributions of galaxies identified as regular and non-regular rotators with \textsc{kinemetry} show considerable overlap in the $\lambda_{Re}$-$\varepsilon_e$ diagram. In contrast, visually classified galaxies (obvious and non-obvious rotators) are better separated in $\lambda_{Re}$ space, with less overlap of both distributions. Then, we use a Bayesian mixture model to analyse the observed $\lambda_{Re}$-$\log(M_*/M_{\odot})$ distribution. Below $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})\sim10.5$, a single beta distribution is sufficient to fit the complete $\lambda_{Re}$ distribution, whereas a second beta distribution is required above $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})\sim10.5$ to account for a population of low-$\lambda_{Re}$ galaxies. While the Bayesian mixture model presents the cleanest separation of the two kinematic populations, we find the unique information provided by visual classification of kinematic maps should not be disregarded in future studies. Applied to mock-observations from different cosmological simulations, the mixture model also predicts bimodal $\lambda_{Re}$ distributions, albeit with different positions of the $\lambda_{Re}$ peaks. Partendo dal presupposto che i contesti sociali e produttivi influiscano sugli effetti della trasformazione tecnologica, l'articolo analizza le esperienze soggettive dei lavoratori della manifattura veneta a seguito delle trasformazioni introdotte nella transizione verso Industria 4.0. Attraverso casi studio, la ricerca mette a fuoco il rapporto tra lavoratori, processi, organizzazione produttiva e vita quotidiana, prestando attenzione alle aspettative, percezioni ed esperienze che i lavoratori associano alla qualità del lavoro. La trasformazione tecnologica contribuisce alla costruzione di nuove istanze di soggettività osservabili nell'aumentato interesse dei lavoratori per gli aspetti espressivi e relazionali del lavoro e nella ridefinizione del valore associato alle diverse attività quotidiane. Tuttavia, non sempre queste istanze trovano adeguate risposte sul terreno dell'innovazione organizzativa, creando tensioni e insofferenza tra i lavoratori.

Based on qualitative data collected for broader research on the transformation of hotel labour in Venice, Italy, this study explores how workers and unions have experienced outsourcing carried out through cooperatives of convenience (COC). The authors examine the impact of outsourcing on work processes, highlighting its link with growing standardisation and increased managerial control. In contrast to studies that underscore the critical effects of outsourcing on solidarity and the employment system, this article stresses that, even in a sector characterised by union weakness, workers, especially unorganised migrants, develop resistance strategies within the workplace as well as paths of mobilisation.

BACKGROUND: Remdesivir (REM) has shown potent antiviral activity in vitro and efficacy in animal models of COVID-19; nevertheless, clinical trials and real-life reports have shown conflicting data on its effectiveness. Aims of the study were to evaluate the impact of remdesivir on I) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, II) need for orotracheal intubation (OTI) and III) in-hospital mortality. Furthermore, we estimated the kinetics of laboratory parameters and assessed the risk factors for in-hospital mortality in the remdesivir population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center, case-control (1:1) study including hospitalized patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Cases were patients treated with remdesivir for 5 days, controls were patients not receiving remdesivir. RESULTS: A total of 192 patients (96 cases and 96 controls) were included in the study. Patients receiving remdesivir had a lower rate of ICU admission and need for OTI than controls, whereas no difference between cases and controls were observed as for mortality rate. However, at multivariable analysis remdesivir was not associated with ICU admission neither with OTI. Instead, presence of haematological malignancies, lower duration of symptoms, higher severity of infection and low lymphocytes count at admission were independently associated with in-hospital mortality. In patients treated with remdesivir a low albumin value and duration of lymphopenia were significantly associated with mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Our real-life study showed that therapy with remdesivir did not have impact on either ICU admission, need for OTI or in-hospital mortality.

In this work, we investigate how the central stellar metallicity ([Z/H]) of 1363 galaxies from the SAMI galaxy survey is related to their stellar mass and a proxy for the gravitational potential, $\Phi$ = log10(M/M*) - log10($r_e$/kpc). In agreement with previous studies, we find that passive and star-forming galaxies occupy different areas of the [Z/H]-M* plane, with passive galaxies having higher [Z/H] than star-forming galaxies at fixed mass (a difference of 0.23 dex at log10(M/M*)=10.3). We show for the first time that all galaxies lie on the same relation between [Z/H] and $\Phi$, and show that the offset in [Z/H] between passive and star-forming galaxies at fixed $\Phi$ is smaller than or equal to the offset in [Z/H] at fixed mass (an average $\Delta$[Z/H] of 0.11 dex at fixed $\Phi$ compared to 0.21 dex at fixed mass). We then build a simple model of galaxy evolution to explain and understand our results. By assuming that [Z/H] traces $\Phi$ over cosmic time and that the probability that a galaxy quenches depends on both its mass and size, we are able to reproduce these offsets in stellar metallicity with a model containing instantaneous quenching. We therefore conclude that an offset in metallicity at fixed mass cannot by itself be used as evidence of slow quenching processes, in contrast to previous studies. Instead, our model implies that metal-rich galaxies have always been the smallest objects for their mass in a population. Dynamical models for $673$ galaxies at $z=0.6-1.0$ with spatially resolved (long-slit) stellar kinematic data from LEGA-C are used to calibrate virial mass estimates defined as $M_{\rm{vir}}=K \sigma'^2_{\star,\rm{int}} R$, with $K$ a scaling factor, $\sigma'_{\star,\rm{int}}$ the spatially-integrated stellar velocity second moment from the LEGA-C survey and $R$ the effective radius measured from a S\'ersic profile fit to HST imaging. The sample is representative for $M_{\star}>3\times10^{10}~M_{\odot}$ and includes all types of galaxies, irrespective of morphology and color. We demonstrate that using $R=R_{\rm{sma}}$~(the semi-major axis length of the ellipse that encloses 50\% of the light) in combination with an inclination correction on $\sigma'_{\star,\rm{int}}$~produces an unbiased $M_{\rm{vir}}$. We confirm the importance of projection effects on $\sigma'_{\star,\rm{int}}$ by showing the existence of a similar residual trend between virial mass estimates and inclination for the nearby early-type galaxies in the ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$~survey. Also, as previously shown, when using a S\'ersic profile-based $R$ estimate, then a S\'{e}rsic index-dependent correction to account for non-homology in the radial profiles is required. With respect to analogous dynamical models for low-redshift galaxies from the ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$~survey we find a systematic offset of 0.1 dex in the calibrated virial constant for LEGA-C, which may be due to physical differences between the galaxy samples or an unknown systematic error. Either way, with our work we establish a common mass scale for galaxies across 8 Gyr of cosmic time with a systematic uncertainty of at most 0.1 dex., Comment: Published in ApJ

We investigate the mean locally-measured velocity dispersions of ionised gas ($\sigma_{\rm gas}$) and stars ($\sigma_*$) for 1090 galaxies with stellar masses $\log\,(M_*/M_{\odot}) \geq 9.5$ from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. For star-forming galaxies, $\sigma_*$ tends to be larger than $\sigma_{\rm gas}$, suggesting that stars are in general dynamically hotter than the ionised gas (asymmetric drift). The difference between $\sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\sigma_*$ ($\Delta\sigma$) correlates with various galaxy properties. We establish that the strongest correlation of $\Delta\sigma$ is with beam smearing, which inflates $\sigma_{\rm gas}$ more than $\sigma_*$, introducing a dependence of $\Delta\sigma$ on both the effective radius relative to the point spread function and velocity gradients. The second-strongest correlation is with the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) (or evolved stars) to the ionised gas emission, implying the gas velocity dispersion is strongly affected by the power source. In contrast, using the velocity dispersion measured from integrated spectra ($\sigma_{\rm aper}$) results in less correlation between the aperture-based $\Delta\sigma$ ($\Delta\sigma_{\rm aper}$) and the power source. This suggests that the AGN (or old stars) dynamically heat the gas without causing significant deviations from dynamical equilibrium. Although the variation of $\Delta\sigma_{\rm aper}$ is much smaller than that of $\Delta\sigma$, a correlation between $\Delta\sigma_{\rm aper}$ and gas velocity gradient is still detected, implying there is a small bias in dynamical masses derived from stellar and ionised gas velocity dispersions., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

We study the alignments of galaxy spin axes with respect to cosmic web filaments as a function of various properties of the galaxies and their constituent bulges and discs. We exploit the SAMI Galaxy Survey to identify 3D spin axes from spatially-resolved stellar kinematics and to decompose the galaxy into the kinematic bulge and disc components. The GAMA survey is used to reconstruct the cosmic filaments. The mass of the bulge, defined as the product of stellar mass and bulge-to-total flux ratio M_bulge=M_star x (B/T), is the primary parameter of correlation with spin-filament alignments: galaxies with lower bulge masses tend to have their spins parallel to the closest filament, while galaxies with higher bulge masses are more perpendicularly aligned. M_star and B/T separately show correlations, but they do not fully unravel spin-filament alignments. Other galaxy properties, such as visual morphology, stellar age, star formation activity, kinematic parameters and local environment, are secondary tracers. Focusing on S0 galaxies, we find preferentially perpendicular alignments, with the signal dominated by high-mass S0 galaxies. Studying bulge and disc spin-filament alignments separately reveals additional information about the formation pathways of the corresponding galaxies: bulges tend to have more perpendicular alignments, while discs show different tendencies according to their kinematic features and the mass of the associated bulge. We explore a sample of 1492 galaxies with measurements of the mean stellar population properties and the spin parameter proxy, $\lambda_{R_{\rm{e}}}$, drawn from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We fit a global $\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]$-$\sigma$ relation, finding that $\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]=(0.395\pm0.010)\rm{log}_{10}\left(\sigma\right)-(0.627\pm0.002)$. We observe an anti-correlation between the residuals $\Delta\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]$ and the inclination-corrected $\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}$, which can be expressed as $\Delta\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]=(-0.057\pm0.008)\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}+(0.020\pm0.003)$. The anti-correlation appears to be driven by star-forming galaxies, with a gradient of $\Delta\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]\sim(-0.121\pm0.015)\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}$, although a weak relationship persists for the subsample of galaxies for which star formation has been quenched. We take this to be confirmation that disk-dominated galaxies have an extended duration of star formation. At a reference velocity dispersion of 200 km s$^{-1}$, we estimate an increase in half-mass formation time from $\sim$0.5 Gyr to $\sim$1.2 Gyr from low- to high-$\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}$ galaxies. Slow rotators do not appear to fit these trends. Their residual $\alpha$-enhancement is indistinguishable from other galaxies with $\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}\lessapprox0.4$, despite being both larger and more massive. This result shows that galaxies with $\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}\lessapprox0.4$ experience a similar range of star formation histories, despite their different physical structure and angular momentum., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) has been identified in China as responsible for viral pneumonia, now called COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019). Patients infected can develop common symptoms like cough and sore throat, and, in severe cases, acute respiratory syndrome and even death. To optimize the available resources, it is necessary to identify in advance the subjects that will develop a more serious illness, therefore requiring intensive care.The neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio (NLR) parameter, resulting from the blood count, could be a significant marker for the diagnosis and management of risk stratification.A retrospective, single-center case-control observational study was conducted. The differential cell count of leukocytes, the NLR and the clinical course of patients hospitalized in intensive care with COVID-19 were analyzed, comparing them with other patients (COVID-19 and non-COVID-19) and healthy individuals selected among workers of the Teaching Hospital Policlinico Umberto I in Rome.370 patients (145 cases and 225 controls) were included in the case-control study, 211 males (57%) and 159 females (43%). The average age of the population was 63 years (SD 16.35). In the group of cases, out of 145 patients, 57 deaths and 88 survivors were recorded, with a lethality rate of 39.3%. The group of cases has an NLR of 7.83 (SD = 8.07), a much higher value than the control group where an NLR of 2.58 was recorded (SD = 1.93) (p0.001). The Neutrophils / Lymphocytes ratio may prove to be a diagnostic factor for COVID-19, an NLR3.68 revealed an OR 10.84 (95% CI = 6.47 - 18.13) (p0.005).The value of NLR considered together with the age variable allows a risk stratification and allows the development of diagnostic and treatment protocols for patients affected by COVID-19. A high neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio suggests worse survival. Risk stratification and management help alleviate the shortage of medical resources and reduce the mortality of critically ill patients.

We present spatially resolved stellar kinematics for 797 $z=0.6-1$ galaxies selected from the LEGA-C survey and construct axisymmetric Jeans models to quantify their dynamical mass and degree of rotational support. The survey is $K_s$-band selected, irrespective of color or morphological type, and allows for a first assessment of the stellar dynamical structure of the general $L^*$ galaxy population at large lookback time. Using light profiles from Hubble Space Telescope imaging as a tracer, our approach corrects for observational effects (seeing convolution and slit geometry), and uses well-informed priors on inclination, anisotropy and a non-luminous mass component. Tabulated data include total mass estimates in a series of spherical apertures (1, 5, and 10 kpc; 1$\times$ and 2$\times$\re), as well as rotational velocities, velocity dispersions and anisotropy. We show that almost all star-forming galaxies and $\sim$50\% of quiescent galaxies are rotation-dominated, with deprojected $V/\sigma\sim1-2$. Revealing the complexity in galaxy evolution, we find that the most massive star-forming galaxies are among the most rotation-dominated, and the most massive quiescent galaxies among the least rotation-dominated galaxies. These measurements set a new benchmark for studying galaxy evolution, using stellar dynamical structure for galaxies at large lookback time. The kinematic morphology-density relation of galaxies is normally attributed to a changing distribution of galaxy stellar masses with the local environment. However, earlier studies were largely focused on slow rotators; the dynamical properties of the overall population in relation to environment have received less attention. We use the SAMI Galaxy Survey to investigate the dynamical properties of $\sim$1800 early and late-type galaxies with $\log(M_*/M_{\odot})>9.5$ as a function of mean environmental overdensity ($\Sigma_{5}$) and their rank within a group or cluster. By classifying galaxies into fast and slow rotators, at fixed stellar mass above $\log(M_*/M_{\odot})>10.5$, we detect a higher fraction ($\sim3.4\sigma$) of slow rotators for group and cluster centrals and satellites as compared to isolated-central galaxies. Focusing on the fast-rotator population, we also detect a significant correlation between galaxy kinematics and their stellar mass as well as the environment they are in. Specifically, by using inclination-corrected or intrinsic $\lambda_{R_e}$ values, we find that, at fixed mass, satellite galaxies on average have the lowest $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$, isolated-central galaxies have the highest $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$, and group and cluster centrals lie in between. Similarly, galaxies in high-density environments have lower mean $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$ values as compared to galaxies at low environmental density. However, at fixed $\Sigma_{5}$, the mean $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$ differences for low and high-mass galaxies are of similar magnitude as when varying $\Sigma_{5}$ {($\Delta \lambda_{\,R_e,intr} \sim 0.05$. Our results demonstrate that after stellar mass, environment plays a significant role in the creation of slow rotators, while for fast rotators we also detect an independent, albeit smaller, impact of mass and environment on their kinematic properties., Comment: 22 pages and 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. In the current context of the European Environmental legislation and standards, the automotive sector is expected to continuously improve the vehicles life cycle with solutions able to minimise emissions of greenhouse gases and other negative effects on the environment and on human health. The vehicle painting process has been identified to be responsible of significant potential impacts, but recent primary inventory data and impact results are currently scarcely available in the literature. The novelty of this paper is the provision of a comprehensive life cycle inventory and life cycle assessment (LCA) of a painting process, with reference to a large and highly automated plant located in Turin (Italy). To achieve these goals, the highly recognised methodology of LCA has been followed, as indicated in ISO 14040-44. A detailed inventory is disclosed (both as input/output table and ILCD file) for the four main phases of the painting process (electrodeposition, primer application, top coat application and final drying and revision). Impact results on the categories of climate change, acidification, terrestrial eutrophication and photochemical ozone creation potential are quantified as well. These latter show that the major hot points are the high-energy consumption (specifically, the integrated provision of technological heating and chilled water is responsible of almost half of the total emissions of greenhouse gases), the direct emission of volatile organic compounds into air (for a total of 7.44 kg/car) and the waste production and treatment [giving a significant contribution to the impact categories of ozone depletion (99%), freshwater eutrophication (66%) and freshwater ecotoxicity potential (60%)]. This study contributes to increase the pool of publicly available life cycle data for specific applications in the automotive sector. In addition, the easy replicability and adaptation of the provided inventory is expected to boost enterprises to increase their overall sustainability. Finally, this study provides data and tools for the development of further research in alternative painting technologies.

We have entered a new era where integral-field spectroscopic surveys of galaxies are sufficiently large to adequately sample large-scale structure over a cosmologically significant volume. This was the primary design goal of the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Here, in Data Release 3 (DR3), we release data for the full sample of 3068 unique galaxies observed. This includes the SAMI cluster sample of 888 unique galaxies for the first time. For each galaxy, there are two primary spectral cubes covering the blue (370-570nm) and red (630-740nm) optical wavelength ranges at spectral resolving power of R=1808 and 4304 respectively. For each primary cube, we also provide three spatially binned spectral cubes and a set of standardized aperture spectra. For each galaxy, we include complete 2D maps from parameterized fitting to the emission-line and absorption-line spectral data. These maps provide information on the gas ionization and kinematics, stellar kinematics and populations, and more. We study the Fundamental Plane (FP) for a volume- and luminosity-limited sample of 560 early-type galaxies from the SAMI survey. Using r-band sizes and luminosities from new Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) photometric measurements, and treating luminosity as the dependent variable, the FP has coefficients a=1.294$\pm$0.039, b= 0.912$\pm$0.025, and zero-point c= 7.067$\pm$0.078. We leverage the high signal-to-noise of SAMI integral field spectroscopy, to determine how structural and stellar-population observables affect the scatter about the FP. The FP residuals correlate most strongly (8$\sigma$ significance) with luminosity-weighted simple-stellar-population (SSP) age. In contrast, the structural observables surface mass density, rotation-to-dispersion ratio, S\'ersic index and projected shape all show little or no significant correlation. We connect the FP residuals to the empirical relation between age (or stellar mass-to-light ratio $\Upsilon_\star$) and surface mass density, the best predictor of SSP age amongst parameters based on FP observables. We show that the FP residuals (anti-)correlate with the residuals of the relation between surface density and $\Upsilon_\star$. This correlation implies that part of the FP scatter is due to the broad age and $\Upsilon_\star$ distribution at any given surface mass density. Using virial mass and $\Upsilon_\star$ we construct a simulated FP and compare it to the observed FP. We find that, while the empirical relations between observed stellar population relations and FP observables are responsible for most (75%) of the FP scatter, on their own they do not explain the observed tilt of the FP away from the virial plane., Comment: 36 pages, 23 figures

We present the first comparison of observed stellar continuum spectra of high-redshift galaxies and mock galaxy spectra generated from hydrodynamical simulations. The mock spectra are produced from the IllustrisTNG TNG100 simulation combined with stellar population models and take into account dust attenuation and realistic observational effects (aperture effects and noise). We compare the simulated $D_n4000$ and EW(H$\delta$) of galaxies with $10.5 \leq \log(M_\ast/M_\odot) \leq 11.5$ at $0.6 \leq z \leq 1.0$ to the observed distributions from the LEGA-C survey. TNG100 globally reproduces the observed distributions of spectral indices, implying that the age distribution of galaxies in TNG100 is generally realistic. Yet there are small but significant differences. For old galaxies, TNG100 shows small $D_n4000$ when compared to LEGA-C, while LEGA-C galaxies have larger EW(H$\delta$) at fixed $D_n4000$. The first part of this contribution will analyze the connection between food and metamorphosis, focusing especially on Das Bad and Yogisha no yakōressha, works that belong to an earlier stage of the production of Tawada. The second part of this contribution will specifically inspect the representation and the metaphor of food in the works written in the aftermath of the 3.11 such as Kentōshi, Fushi no shima and the poem Hamlet no see.

This study assessed the anaerobic digestion (AD) of wastes deriving from cosmetics production: sludge from onsite wastewater treatment plant (sWWTP), residues of shampoo/conditioner (RSC) and sludge from mascara production (MS), considered as single substrates and as mixture according to the produced amounts (54 %-wt sWWTP, 31 %-wt RSC, 13 %-wt MS, plus 2 %-wt food waste from the canteen, FW). Total COD (CODT) was 624–1436 g O2/kg VS, while soluble COD was 5–23 %-wt of CODT. AD tests at 35 °C achieved the following biogas yields: 0.10 Nm3/kgvs (70 %-v/v methane) for sWWTP; 0.07 Nm3/kgvs (62 %-v/v methane) for RSC; 0.04 Nm3/kgvs (67 %-v/v methane) for MS. The mixed substrates underwent physico-chemical pre-treatments (thermo-alkaline, TA: 120 min at 50 °C; thermo-alkaline-sonication, TAS: 15 min at 40 kHz and 80 °C, both based on the addition of 0.08 g NaOH per each g of total solid in the substrate), reaching 64–66% disintegration rate, and AD tests (5 %-wt dry substance) at 35 and 52 °C. Biogas yields were (for TA and TAS respectively): 0.22 and 0.20 Nm3/kgVS (62–70% methane); 0.21 and 0.19 Nm3/kgVS (66-66% methane) at 52 °C. At both temperatures, methane yields considerably improved (+71–100%), compared to mixed untreated substrates, and 5-8 %-wt total solids reductions were observed. A technical-economic scale-up assessment completed the research. The energy analysis highlighted the crucial role of TA pre-treatment in achieving the process energetic sustainability. The economic analysis showed that the AD of the considered cosmetic waste could be sustainable anyway, thanks to the savings related to the disposal of the digestate compared to current waste management costs.

We explore the connection between the kinematics, structures and stellar populations of massive galaxies at $0.610.5$) galaxies that span a wide range in morphology, star formation activity and environment, and therefore is representative of the massive galaxy population at $z\sim0.8$. We find that quiescent and star-forming galaxies occupy the parameter space of the $g$-band FP differently and thus have different distributions in the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\rm dyn}/L_g$), largely owing to differences in the stellar age and recent star formation history, and, to a lesser extent, the effects of dust attenuation. In contrast, we show that both star-forming and quiescent galaxies lie on the same mass FP at $z\sim 0.8$, with a comparable level of intrinsic scatter about the plane. We examine the variation in $M_{\rm dyn}/M_*$ through the thickness of the mass FP, finding no significant residual correlations with stellar population properties, S\'ersic index, or galaxy overdensity. Our results suggest that, at fixed size and velocity dispersion, the variations in $M_{\rm dyn}/L_g$ of massive galaxies reflect an approximately equal contribution of variations in $M_*/L_g$, and variations in the dark matter fraction or initial mass function., Comment: 32 pages, 19 figures (including appendices); accepted for publication in ApJ

Using deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysical Census (LEGA-C) survey, conducted using VIMOS on the ESO Very Large Telescope, we search for low-ionization [O ii] λ λ 3726,3729 emission in the spectra of a mass-complete sample of z ≈ 0.85 galaxies. We find that 59% of UVJ-quiescent (i.e., non-star-forming) galaxies in the sample have [O ii] emission detected above our completeness limit of 1.5 Å, and the median-stacked spectrum of the remaining sample also shows [O ii] emission. The overall fraction of sources with [O ii] above our equivalent width limit is comparable to what we find in the low-redshift universe from GAMA and MASSIVE, except perhaps at the highest stellar masses (>1011.5 M ⊙). However, stacked spectra for the individual low-equivalent-width systems uniquely indicates ubiquitous [O ii] emission in the higher-z LEGA-C sample, with typical [O ii] luminosities per unit stellar mass that are a factor of ×3 larger than the lower-z GAMA sample. Star formation at higher-z could play a role in producing the [O ii] emission, although it is unlikely to provide the bulk of the ionizing photons. More work is required to fully quantify the contributions of evolved stellar populations or active galactic nuclei to the observed spectra.

We present an overview of the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, a Large Program on ESO/VLT. MAGPI is designed to study the physical drivers of galaxy transformation at a lookback time of 3-4 Gyr, during which the dynamical, morphological, and chemical properties of galaxies are predicted to evolve significantly. The survey uses new medium-deep adaptive optics aided MUSE observations of fields selected from the GAMA survey, providing a wealth of publicly available ancillary multi-wavelength data. We present a novel approach to measure the attenuation curves of 485 individual star-forming galaxies with M$_*$ $>$ 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ based on deep optical spectra from the VLT/VIMOS LEGA-C survey and multi-band photometry in the COSMOS field. Most importantly, we find that the attenuation curves in the rest-frame $3000-4500$A range are typically almost twice as steep as the Milky Way, LMC, SMC, and Calzetti attenuation curves, which is in agreement with recent studies of the integrated light of present-day galaxies. The attenuation at $4500$A and the slope strongly correlate with the galaxy inclination: face-on galaxies show less attenuation and steeper curves compared to edge-on galaxies, suggesting that geometric effects dominate observed variations in attenuation. Our new method produces $2175$A UV bump detections for 260 individual galaxies. Even though obvious correlations between UV bump strength and global galaxy properties are absent, strong UV bumps are most often seen in face-on, lower-mass galaxies (10 $, Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. We use deep, spatially resolved spectroscopy from the LEGA-C Survey to study radial variations in the stellar population of 17 spectroscopically-selected post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. We use spectral fitting to measure two Lick indices, $H{\delta}_A$ and $Fe4383$, and find that, on average, PSB galaxies have radially decreasing $H{\delta}_A$ and increasing $Fe4383$ profiles. In contrast, a control sample of quiescent, non-PSB galaxies in the same mass range shows outwardly increasing $H{\delta}_A$ and decreasing $Fe4383$. The observed gradients are weak ($\approx-0.2$ \r{A}/$R_e$), mainly due to seeing convolution. A two-SSP model suggests intrinsic gradients are as strong as observed in local PSB galaxies ($\approx -0.8$ \r{A}$/R_e$). We interpret these results in terms of inside-out growth (for the bulk of the quiescent population) vs star formation occurring last in the centre (for PSB galaxies). At $z\approx0.8$, central starbursts are often the result of gas-rich mergers, as evidenced by the high fraction of PSB galaxies with disturbed morphologies and tidal features (40%). Our results provide additional evidence for multiple paths to quiescence: a standard path, associated with inside-out disc formation and with gradually decreasing star-formation activity, without fundamental structural transformation, and a fast path, associated with centrally-concentrated starbursts, leaving an inverse age gradient and smaller half-light radius., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures
