Resumen Garantizar y promover la sostenibilidad ambiental es uno de los principales objetivos de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible. Sin embargo, factores tales como actividades extractivas, culturales e incluso el cambio climático, resultan las principales causas de presión que determinan el estado en que se encuentra el territorio. Es importante disponer de herramientas que nos informen sobre el grado de consecución de los objetivos planteados, así como en la identificación de los impactos y sus consecuencias para así poder realizar una gestión que mantenga o incremente la biodiversidad y demás recursos del área. En un área protegida del suroeste de la península Ibérica, en la que tuvo lugar una importante actividad minera, hemos analizado la variación de un índice de vegetación (NDVI) y las variaciones climáticas como herramientas para una gestión sostenible. Los resultados muestran el impacto que la actividad extractiva y las variaciones climáticas han ocasionado en los recursos y por tanto, en los servicios ecosistémicos asociados al territorio. Las herramientas propuestas se han mostrado rápidas y precisas para la toma de decisiones y su aplicación en otras áreas puede servir de modelo para la consecución de los objetivos de la Agenda 2030.

This report collates the main results delivered in the frame of the CleanAtlantic project, Work package 5.2. Monitoring the presence of marine litter in the marine environment. With this purpose, an overview of new and improved marine litter monitoring methods for seabed, water surface and coastal compartments in the Atlantic Area is presented. Main findings, gaps on monitoring and research as well as potential improvements and recommendations are highlighted. For some of the topics addressed partners produced fully-dedicated reports. Floating marine litter is a recurrent pollutant in the Atlantic and worldwide oceans which has attracted increasing attention in the latest years. Meso- and microplastics derived from industrial pellets or through debris degradation have been also reported in surface and subsurface water samples from Atlantic coast and high-seas. The need of microplastic monitoring and assessment in EU countries and the Atlantic Area calls for the establishment of standardized sampling protocols and methods. In this work, the application of manta-trawl for micro-litter monitoring in coastal and offshore waters of the Galician coast (NW Spain) was assessed. The results obtained in this work suggest a moderate micro-litter density in both coastal and offshore stations. Also, manta-trawl was proved to be a feasible tool for surface and subsurface meso and micro-litter collection.

A Sea litter data viewer has been developed in the framework of the CleanAtlantic European project. This web application allows access to the litter data of different compartments of the ocean as beach litter, floating litter, and seabed litter. The users can query the statistical distributions of litter concentrations, time series, and the composition of the most frequent types of litter of each geographical item. Twitter, with more than 330 million monthly active users worldwide, is an invaluable source for studying environmental and social concerns. Here, we present an exploratory data analysis of a one-year (July 20- July 21) dataset of ~132K tweets containing the words ‘plastic’ or ‘microplastic’ in reference to the marine environment. Understanding what kind of users profiles are tweeting and how and when they do it, could help organizations involved in research and marine environmental awareness to adjust their communication plans. One of the wide spread aquatic organisms in the rivers and estuaries ecosystems in the World is Asian clam Corbicula fluminea. The exotic clam is an invasive species that can adapt to environmental changes, also it was adopted as a model to toxicity tests. The study evaluated the effects of the exposure to cadmium and microplastics their mixtures on Corbicula fluminea, oxidative stress responses, lipid peroxidation, changed the activity of energy-related enzymes and neurotoxicity on the gill, the digestive gland and the gonad. The results of this study show that Cd, MPs and their mixtures cause oxidative stress and damage and neurotoxicity. The enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, acetylcholinesterase and the measure of LPO levels could be chosen as biomarker of Cd pollution. With MPs conditions increased levels of GSH/GSSG ratio and AChE are highly correlated. The combination of Cd and MPs exposure caused a synergetic effect in gill and gonad, while an antagonism response was recorded in digestive gland. The results provide new insights for unveiling the biologic effects of heavy metal, microplastics and their mixtures on Corbicula fluminea. The white paper discusses Arecibo Observatory's plan for facility improvements and activities over the next decade. The facility improvements include: (a) improving the telescope surface, pointing and focusing to achieve superb performance up to ~12.5 GHz; (b) equip the telescope with ultrawide-band feeds; (c) upgrade the instrumentation with a 4 GHz bandwidth high dynamic range digital link and a universal backend and (d) augment the VLBI facility by integrating the 12m telescope for phase referencing. These upgrades to the Arecibo telescope are critical to keep the national facility in the forefront of research in radio astronomy while maintaining its dominance in radar studies of near-Earth asteroids, planets and satellites. In the next decade, the Arecibo telescope will play a synergistic role with the upcoming facilities such as ngVLA, SKA and the now commissioned FAST telescope. Marine anthropogenic litter has long been recognised as an emerging pollutant of global concern. Its ubiquitous distribution and its direct and indirect impacts on aquatic ecosystems, marine fauna and local economies have been recently highlighted by several studies and international organisations around the world. Although comprised of different materials, plastic constitutes the most abundant fraction reported in worldwide surveys, with percentages that are variable from region to region. Among plastic materials, microplastics (herein MPs), represent a huge concern due to their impacts resulting from fragmentation under weathering conditions (e.g. solar radiation, water temperature and abrasion processes) and from their ability to adsorb persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals (PBTC) (e.g. polychlorinated biphenyls - PCBs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – PAHs) and trace elements (e.g. Cu, Zn, etc.). In addition to these impacts, recent studies have also reported the potential for MPs to be easily mistaken as food particles and subsequently ingested by a wide range of organisms throughout the different environmental compartments (e.g. sediment, water, air). Under the scope of the JPI-Oceans, BASEMAN is an international and interdisciplinary collaborative research project that aims to overcome the lack of standardised methodologies through a profound and detailed comparison and evaluation of all approaches from sampling to identification of MPs. The two overall goals of the project are firstly “The validation and harmonisation of analytical methods” which is indispensable for the second goal of “Identification and quantification of MPs”. Based on these goals and with the overall aim of creating a standardised methodology to allow microplastics harmonised long-term monitoring in Europe, the BASEMAN project provides a set of recommended protocols to allow comparisons among studies. With this in mind, the protocols will focus on sampling, processing and analysis of MPs in samples from different environmental compartments, specifically addressing MPs from intertidal and subtidal sediments. Objective To review the scientific literature related to the safe handling of hazardous drugs (HDs). Method Critical analysis of works retrieved from MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, CINHAL, Web of Science and LILACS using the terms "Hazardous Substances", "Antineoplastic Agents" and "Cytostatic Agents", applying "Humans" and "Guidelines" as filters. Date of search: January 2017. Results In total, 1100 references were retrieved, and from those, 61 documents were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria: 24 (39.3%) documents related to recommendations about HDs; 27 (44.3%) about antineoplastic agents, and 10 (33.3%) about other types of substances (monoclonal antibodies, gene medicine and other chemical and biological agents). In 14 (23.3%) guides, all the stages in the manipulation process involving a risk due to exposure were considered. Only one guide addressed all stages of the handling process of HDs (including stages with and without the risk of exposure). The most described stages were drug preparation (41 guides, 67.2%), staff training and/or patient education (38 guides, 62.3%), and administration (37 guides, 60.7%). No standardized informatics system was found that ensured quality management, traceability and minimization of the risks associated with these drugs. Conclusions Most of the analysed guidelines limit their recommendations to the manipulation of antineoplastics. The most frequently described activities were preparation, training, and administration. It would be convenient to apply ICTs (Information and Communications Technologies) to manage processes involving HDs in a more complete and simpler fashion.

20 páginas, 4 figuras, 4 tablas., A total of fourteen hydrographic cruises from 2000 to 2008 were conducted during the spring and autumn seasons between Spain and the Southern Ocean under the framework of the Spanish research project FICARAM. The underway measurements were processed and analysed to describe the meridional air-sea CO2 fluxes (FCO2) in the covered sector of the Atlantic Ocean. The data has been grouped into different biogeochemical oceanographic provinces based on thermohaline characteristics. The spatial and temporal distributions of FCO2 followed expected distributions and annual trends reproducing the recent climatological ΔfCO2 estimations with a mean difference of −3 ± 18 μatm (Takahashi et al., 2009). The reduction in the CO2 saturation along the meridional FICARAM cruises represented an increase of 0.02 ± 0.14 mol m−2 yr−1 in the ocean uptake of atmospheric CO2. The subtropical waters in both Hemispheres acted as a sink of atmospheric CO2 during the successive spring seasons and as a source in autumn. The coarse reduction of the ocean uptake of atmospheric CO2 observed in the North Atlantic Ocean was linked to conditions of negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation that prevailed during the FICARAM period. Surface waters in the North Equatorial Counter Current revealed a significant long-term decrease of sea surface salinity of −0.16 ± 0.01 yr−1 coinciding with a declination of −3.5 ± 0.9 μatm yr−1 in the air–sea disequilibrium of CO2 fugacity and a rise of oceanic CO2 uptake of −0.09 ± 0.03 mol m−2 yr−1. The largest CO2 source was located in the equatorial upwelling system. These tropical waters that reached emissions of 0.7 ± 0.5 and 1.0 ± 0.7 mol m−2 y−1 in spring and autumn, respectively, showed an interannual warming of 0.11 ± 0.03 °C yr−1 and a wind speed decrease of −0.58 ± 0.14 m s−1 yr−1 in spring cruises which suggest the weakening of upwelling events associated with warm El Niño – Southern Oscillation episodes. Contrary the surface waters of the Patagonian Sea behaved as an intense sink of CO2 in March and November. The oceanic waters of the convergence of Falkland and Brazil Currents showed the strongest CO2 absorption with a rate of −5.4 ± 3.6 mol m−2 yr−1 in November. The Southern Oceans sampled in the Drake Passage behave as an average uptake rate of −1.1 ± 0.9 mol m−2 yr−1 while the distal shelf of the Livingston Island acted as a slight source of CO2 to the atmosphere., This study was developed and funded by the European Commission within the 6th Framework Programme (EU FP6 CARBOOCEAN Integrated Project, Contract no. 511176), the Spanish research project FICARAM (CICYT. Marine ecosystems are nowadays subjected to a massive input of synthetic chemicals from everywhere. Unfortunately only a small portion of them is being monitored, and it is necessary to identify which pollutants can produce adverse impacts in the marine environment. IMPACTA project (CTM2013-48194-C3) is characterizing the distribution of regulated and emerging contaminants and microplastics in marine sediments, and evaluating the biological effects that they can cause (sing sublethal embryotoxicity tests, endocrine disruption and biomarkers). Sensitive and selective analytical methods are being developed and validated for pharmaceuticals, perfluorinated compounds, organophosphorus pesticides, triazines, personal care products, nonylphenols and alkylated PAHs in sediments. Thus, relevant pollutants present in coastal and offshore areas will be identified. Furthermore potential toxic effects of the contaminants present in coastal sediments are being assessed through embryotoxicity bioassays and also the biological effects on different marine species as a consequence of their exposition to specific compounds. Another relevant contribution of this project will be the assessment of the impact of micro-plastics, first time in the Spanish coastal areas. Their potential toxic effects and their role in the transference of pollutants in the marine environment are being assessed. The concentration and composition of microplastics in sediments and demersal fish stomachs are being characterized, and their potential biological effects on marine invertebrates are also being investigated.

El objetivo de las Estrategias Marinas es permitir el uso sostenible del medio marino mediante la gestión de las actividades y presiones humanas siguiendo un enfoque ecosistémico. La evaluación del estado de conservación de las especies marinas y su monitorización para determinar si alcanza el Buen Estado Ambiental (BEA) son sus pilares básicos. Para establecer medidas de gestión que permitan a una población alcanzar el BEA, se debe estudiar el estado de la misma y el efecto que diferentes niveles de amenazas antropogénicas pueden tener sobre ella. La creación de modelos dinámicos permite estudiar las posibles trayectorias de una población ante diferentes escenarios. La fuente de información biológica más importante que poseemos es aquella proveniente de los varamientos, que también proporcionan información sobre la causa de la muerte. El análisis de las muestras de individuos varados nos permite calcular tasas de natalidad, mortalidad, estructura de edad poblacional y el impacto directo o indirecto de las presiones antropogénicas (captura accidental, colisiones con embarcaciones, contaminación, etc.). Asimismo, los patrones observados en los varamientos nos dan información sobre la tendencia en la abundancia de una especie y sobre posibles desplazamientos. La abundancia de una población puede ser obtenida mediante campañas de avistamiento y, dependiendo de la metodología empleada, pueden obtenerse estimas relativas o absolutas. Además, la dieta de los cetáceos nos permite estudiar sus preferencias alimentarias y el papel que pueden estar jugando en el ecosistema. Los modelos multiespecíficos (p.ej. Gadget) posibilitan estudiar su interacción con los stocks pesqueros e informar una gestión ecosistémica. En este trabajo se presentan datos preliminares sobre abundancia del delfín común en el N y NW peninsular, tendencias en la abundancia, parámetros biológicos y su estructura poblacional, mortalidad natural, pesquera y ejemplos de puntos de referencia que permitan determinar si la población alcanza el BEA.

Stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbón (δ13C) have been used as tracers for analyzing the trophic ecology of European hake larvae collected during the winter and summer of 2012 off NW Galicia. The sampling times correspond to periods of high and low hake spawning activity, respectively. Trophic enrichment was analyzed using as baseline two different plankton size fractions, corresponding to micro- (55-200μm) and mesozooplankton (>200μm). During both seasons, the δ15N signatures of hake larvae showed higher values than the zooplankton fractions. The first survey carried out in late February was characterized by a preceding marked upwelling, low geostrophic velocities in the hydrographic circulation and an intense mixing of the water column. This environmental scenario is hypothesizing that originated a great nutrient availability for primary consumers showed its effect in the low δ15N values observed in plankton and hake larvae. During July, the environmental setting corresponded to period where the water column was stratified, an anticyclonic gyre was formed in the center of the study area that concentrated particles and weak upwelling conditions and strong geostrophic currents where found. This scenario was characterized hypothetically by low nutrient availability in which production is mainly based on regenerated nutrients which would explain the higher δ15N values found during this period. On the other hand, the greater δ13C values observed in summer in comparison to winter suggest differences in the energetic sources of carbon (Fig. 1). The discussion of results is centered in how oceanographic variability conditions signatures of stable isotope fractionation in the early life trophic food web influencing the variable trophic pathways of larval hake subject to contrasting environmental conditions, thereby affecting their larval nutritional condition as estimated by RNA/DNA ratios and the Fulton index. La atención médica personalizada requiere combinar información pública de diversas fuentes con información disponible sobre un paciente o grupo de pacientes. Un problema bien conocido en el ámbito de la gestión de la información es la enorme cantidad de información disponible. Además, las soluciones actuales no aprovechan las ventajas de las últimas aportaciones en el campo del procesamiento semántico. Este problema es especialmente relevante en el ámbito de la salud, ya que sus procesos clave dependen de manera determinante del acceso a información de alta calidad, completa, actualizada y relevante. Esta propuesta tiene como objetivo proporcionar soluciones novedosas para la gestión y recuperación de información en el ámbito de ciencias de la salud para hacer frente a la situación descrita. Para ello, hemos desarrollado un modelo semántico para representar perfiles de salud y caracterizar fuentes de información relevante y así poder completar un repositorio semántico con referencias de contenido y sus propiedades. Además, proponemos las herramientas necesarias para consultar esta Base de Conocimiento a partir de los perfiles semánticos de los pacientes. La solución propuesta, presentada aquí como una prueba de concepto, pretende contribuir al avance de las tecnologías aplicadas a la salud personal y la medicina basada en la evidencia. Las herramientas desarrolladas también pueden ser utilizadas con el fin de hacer uso del conocimiento existente para dar soporte a la revisión sistemática de informes, estudios y análisis relevantes según las condiciones de salud de los pacientes individuales o perfiles de los pacientes. Personalized healthcare requires recombining heterogeneous publicly available data with a patient's or group of patient's profile. A well-known problem in state-of-the-art information management is the overwhelming amount of information available. Besides, state-of-the-art solutions do not take advantage of modern semantic processing to adequately transform data into knowledge. This issue is especially relevant in the health domain, as key processes depend dramatically on the access to high quality, complete, up-to-date, and relevant content (e.g. diagnostics, risk assessment, public health interventions, etc.). This proposal aims to provide novel information management and retrieval solutions in the domain of health sciences to address the situation discussed above. More specifically, we introduce semantic reasoning to retrieve the most relevant knowledge available according to the health profile of a given person. For this, we developed a semantic model to represent health profiles of people and to characterize existing sources of relevant information in order to crawl them to populate a semantic repository with content references and properties. We outline the tools needed to query the knowledge base using the semantic profiles of individuals to get the most relevant content. The proposed solution, discussed here as a proof-of-concept, aims to contribute to the realm of personal health and evidence-based medicine technologies. The tools developed could also be used to take advantage of existing knowledge to facilitate a systematic review of reports, studies and analysis that may be relevant to the health conditions of single patients or patient profiles.

En la actualidad existe una enorme cantidad de información en Internet que no puede ser interpretada y reutilizada por agentes software. Este hecho impone una importante limitación al potencial de las herramientas que es posible construir haciendo uso de los datos disponibles en la Web actual. Sin embargo, los recientes avances introducidos en el ámbito de la Web Semántica nos permiten crear una nueva generación de aplicaciones inteligentes capaces de ofrecer valor añadido al usuario. Este trabajo presenta los desafíos tecnológicos que es preciso abordar para, dentro del ámbito de la nutrición, partir de una o varias fuentes de datos convencionales y generar un repositorio web, basado en tecnologías semánticas, ligado con otras fuentes de datos públicas en Internet. Este enfoque permite que herramientas automáticas operen sobre esta información y presten nuevas funcionalidades altamente interesantes en el ámbito de la salud pública, como la generación automática de menús para escolares o asesores dietéticos inteligentes, entre otras. El presente artículo detalla el proceso para generar dicho soporte de información siguiendo las directrices de la iniciativa Linked Data e ilustra el uso de herramientas que sacan partido de este soporte para su adopción en otros casos de uso y entornos próximos. Currently, there is a huge amount of information available on Internet that can neither be interpreted nor used by software agents. This fact poses a serious drawback to the potential of tools that deal with data on the current Web. Nevertheless, in recent times, advances in the domain of Semantic Web make possible the development of a new generation of smart applications capable of creating added-value services for the final user. This work shows the technical challenges that must be faced in the area of nutrition in order to transform one or several oldfashion sources of raw data into a web repository based on semantic technologies and linked with external and publicly available data on Internet. This approach makes possible for automatic tools to operate on the top of this information providing new functionalities highly interesting in the domain of public health, such as the automatic generation of menus for children or intelligent dietetic assistants, among others. This article explains the process to create such information support applying the guidelines of the Linked Data initiative and provides insights into the use of tools to make the most of this technology for its adoption in related use cases and environments.

The redundancy allocation problem is formulated minimizing the design cost for a series-parallel system with multiple component choices whereas ensuring a given system reliability level. The obtained model is a nonlinear integer programming problem with a non linear, non separable constraint. We propose an algebraic method, based on Gr\"obner bases, to obtain the exact solution of the problem. In addition, we provide a closed form for the required Gr\"obner bases, avoiding the bottleneck associated with the computation, and promising computational results., Comment: 19 pages. Este problema es especialmente relevante en el ámbito de la salud, ya que sus procesos clave dependen de manera determinante del acceso a información de alta calidad, completa, actualizada y relevante. Esta propuesta tiene como objetivo proporcionar soluciones novedosas para la gestión y recuperación de información en el ámbito de ciencias de la salud para hacer frente a la situación descrita. Para ello, hemos desarrollado un modelo semántico para representar perfiles de salud y caracterizar fuentes de información relevante y así poder completar un repositorio semántico con referencias de contenido y sus propiedades. Además, proponemos las herramientas necesarias para consultar esta Base de Conocimiento a partir de los perfiles semánticos de los pacientes. La solución propuesta, presentada aquí como una prueba de concepto, pretende contribuir al avance de las tecnologías aplicadas a la salud personal y la medicina basada en la evidencia. Las herramientas desarrolladas también pueden ser utilizadas con el fin de hacer uso del conocimiento existente para dar soporte a la revisión sistemática de informes, estudios y análisis relevantes según las condiciones de salud de los pacientes individuales o perfiles de los pacientes.

En este libro, basado en la mejor información científica disponible hasta la fecha, se presentan los resultados y conclusiones de una serie de trece campañas de investigación multidisciplinar realizadas entre octubre de 2007 y abril de 2010 por los componentes del Grupo ATLANTIS a bordo del B/O MIGUEL OLIVER, propiedad de la Secretaría General de Pesca (SGP). El estudio surge a raíz de la solicitud por parte de la SGP (anteriormente denominada Secretaría General del Mar) al Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO), para la realización de una serie de campañas de investigación multidisciplinar en aguas internacionales del Atlántico Sudoccidental, dirigidas al estudio de los Ecosistemas Marinos Vulnerables (EMVs) y de las posibles interacciones con las actividades pesqueras. El objetivo final de dichas campañas era el estudio y la identificación cuantitativa, cualitativa y geográfica de los EMVs y de los grupos taxonómicos de organismos sensibles que pudieran existir en la zona de estudio, incluyendo la propuesta de posibles zonas marinas a proteger, para una explotación sostenible de los recursos pesqueros en el ámbito del respeto a los EMVs. Los resultados que se presentan en este libro comprenden los obtenidos a través de los trabajos de geología, geomorfología, bentos, pesca, oceanografía física y análisis de contaminantes en la zona de aguas internacionales del Atlántico Sudoccidental comprendida entre los paralelos 42º y 48ºS, y la isobata de los 1500 m de profundidad (Figura 2.2). Entre estos resultados se incluye el cartografiado y una batimetría detallada de la zona, la descripción del substrato geológico y de los aspectos bentónicos, el análisis de la distribución y abundancia de las especies de mayor interés comercial, la huella de la pesquería, la identificación y descripción preliminar de los EMVs, y la propuesta de Zonas de Protección, basada en criterios Geológicos, Geomorfológicos y Biológicos. Toda esta información ha sido incorporada para su tratamiento en una plataforma SIG (Sistema de Información Geográfica) y los resultados obtenidos y presentados en este libro vienen acompañados de abundante información gráfica, como imágenes batimétricas en 3D, fotografías de bentos (infauna y epifauna), imágenes tomadas con un ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) y con una cámara digital submarina, así como una serie de mapas de distribución, capturas y densidad de las principales especies de interés pesquero. Se incluye también un mapa con la huella de la pesquería (1989-2010) que permita observar la incidencia de las Zonas de Protección propuestas en el área en la que faena habitualmente la flota española de arrastre de fondo. Como información adicional a la obtenida en las trece campañas de investigación, también se ha utilizado la base de datos creada con la información recogida por el Programa de Observadores del IEO entre los años 1989-2010, referente a datos comerciales, biológicos, oceanográficos y físicos (batimetría, temperatura superficial del mar y temperatura del fondo). Entre octubre de 2007 y abril de 2010 se han realizado un total de trece campañas de investigación multidisciplinar, que se han concretado en los siguientes trabajos: • 347 días efectivos de mar • Prospección de una superficie total de 59.105 km2 • Realización de un total de 91.905 km de perfiles geofísicos • 102 muestreos con draga de roca • 209 muestreos con draga box corer • 519 estaciones de CTD • 413 lances de pesca • 413 muestras de sedimentos con el colector de red • Recogida de varios miles de lotes de muestras de bentos que representan varios centenares de miles de especímenes y/o colonias • Realización de miles de fotografías de especies bentónicas, centenares de imágenes digitales de alta resolución y decenas de horas de vídeo realizadas con el ROV del barco Entre los principales resultados de los trabajos de investigación multidisciplinar presentados en este libro hay que destacar la identificación, descripción y delimitación de los EMVs, siguiendo criterios biológicos, geológicos y mixtos; la identificación de los principales grupos bentónicos indicadores de EMVs; la determinación de los valores que representan una captura significativa de los distintos taxones considerados como vulnerables según criterios de la ONU y OSPAR, y finalmente, la propuesta de áreas marinas que deberían ser consideradas como candidatas a ser protegidas. En total se proponen nueve polígonos de diferente superficie para su valoración como zonas de protección (Figura 7.5) y se hace referencia a la incidencia que el cierre de dichas zonas podría tener sobre la actividad de la flota, es decir, el grado de solapamiento entre las zonas de protección y la huella de la pesquería (Figura 7.6).
