The application of gamification to encourage energy conservation behaviour in house occupants is an emerging field of research. However, empirical evidence of its effectiveness is lacking. This paper presents lessons learnt from the EU-funded EnerGAware research project, in which an innovative serious game (a game designed for purposes other than purely entertainment) was developed to promote reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions by changing social housing tenants’ energy efficiency behaviour. The game was validated in a sample of European social housing using a longitudinal, two-stage experimental design, employing both pre-post and control group approaches. While some aspects of the game did not work as intended, there were nevertheless some positive impacts. The intervention increased social housing tenants’ awareness and engagement in certain energy saving behaviour and provided an average electricity saving of 3.46% and an average gas saving of 7.48%. Although savings were found not to be statistically significant, an effect size was detected (0.2). Therefore, future steps should exploit all available opportunities to replicate the pilot and increase the sample size so as to gain stronger evidence of the game's impact. Preliminary results support the utility of gaming investment in the household energy efficiency field, and provide useful insights and pathways that could be incorporated into the development of future serious game interventions to foster their effectiveness.

Success has always been the ultimate goal of construction projects, and different researchers have tried to evaluate it using different factors. Although specialized industrial construction usually involves very large scale projects with a high degree of technological complexity, research has mostly focused on civil and residential success factors. Experiences in Industrial Plants projects can help to improve project management and productivity in such a specialized sector. In this kind of projects, the contractual arrangement is one of the core differences on Project management and thus project success. This research seeks to develop a schema for classifying critical success factors as well as a methodology for evaluating projects. This methodology was adopted to evaluate critical success factors in Industrial Plants projects with different contractual arrangements. Findings suggest that although the construction stage has been the focus of many studies, the first stages are decisive for the success of projects; contract construction projects consider project planning to be more important; lump sum contract construction projects give greater importance to monitoring the benefits; bidding competition projects consider the available technology with greater rigor, etc. The results indicate that different Industrial Plants projects involve different success factors and management characteristics to achieve project objectives. En cualquier proyecto de construcción el principal objetivo es que sea exitoso y por lo tanto a lo largo del tiempo diferentes investigadores han tratado de evaluar los factores que influyen en el éxito de proyectos. En el ámbito de la construcción estas investigaciones se han enfocado principalmente a obras civiles y residenciales. Este artículo muestra resultados que provienen de proyectos de construcción industrial especializada que incluyen proyectos de gran escala con un alto grado de complejidad tecnológica, relaciones contractuales más complejas que en las obras residenciales, mayor dificultad en la gestión de proyectos, etc. Las experiencias exitosas en proyectos de Plantas Industriales pueden ayudar a mejorar la gestión de proyectos y la productividad en un sector tan especializado como es la construcción industrial. En esta investigación se desarrolla un esquema de clasificación de factores críticos para el éxito así como una metodología para evaluar proyectos. Esta metodología fue adoptada para evaluar factores críticos para el éxito en distintos proyectos de Plantas Industriales con diferentes relaciones contractuales. Las conclusiones sugieren que aunque la etapa de construcción haya sido el foco de muchos estudios, las primeras etapas son decisivas para el éxito de proyectos; los proyectos con un sistema de contratación tradicional consideran la planificación del proyecto como lo más importante; los proyectos "llave en mano" dan una importancia mayor al monitoreo de los beneficios; los proyectos que se llevan a concurso consideran la tecnología disponible con mayor rigor, etc. Los resultados indican que distintos proyectos de Plantas Industriales requieren de diferentes factores de éxito y características de gerencia para alcanzar sus objetivos.

Aplicat embargament des de la data de defensa fins juny 2019 Bridging the gap between the predicted and actual energy performance of buildings is necessary to increase the energy performance of existing buildings and achieve the European Union’s energy efficiency targets in the “2030 climate & energy framework”. Construction is considered the sector with the most potential for energy saving. Specifically, buildings space heating has considerable potential for energy saving. Thermal transmittance is the fundamental parameter to characterise the heat losses of building envelopes. However, several research authors evidenced that assumptions regarding heat loss from a home pre-retrofit and post-retrofit were incorrect. In this sense, accurate on-site measurements are necessary to provide information on the actual thermal transmittance of façades. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to reduce the energy performance gap of residential buildings. Therefore, the aim of the thesis is to enhance the accuracy of in situ measurements of the actual thermal transmittance of façades of existing residential buildings using the heat flux meter method to ensure successful decision-making during the energy renovation processes of existing buildings, and to confirm energy performance strategies for new nearly zero-energy buildings. The analysis of testing parameters for the in situ measurement process of the thermal transmittance are not fully specified by the standard ISO used extensively. Relating to calculation methods to conduct research on the thermal behaviour of façades, the standardised average method is widely used by authors. Very few initiatives used the standardised dynamic method because it is more complex than the average method. This research assesses the implications of using the different standardised calculation methods in order to verify which best fits theoretical values. Moreover, the usability of the standardised dynamic method is promoted and facilitated through a calculation procedure, defining a programmed spreadsheet accessible to practitioners. The dissertation proposes a classification system of façades to facilitate the selection of façades to conduct a systematic analysis of the thermal performance of façades in the housing sector. The classification of façades of existing residential buildings for subsequent analysis is based on the characterization of the opaque part of façades. The dissertation continues with the exploration of the boundaries of the requirements for using the standardised heat flow meter method to refine the testing conditions in low U-value façades. Façades with low thermal transmittance values are increasingly promoted due to comply with Directive 2010/31/EC targets. However, as several researchers shown, conducting accurate in situ measurement of low thermal transmittance façades is a challenging task. Investigating the limits of application of the HFM method for the in situ measurement of U-values in low thermal transmittance façades would allow to ensure compliance with policies to transition the existing building stock to nearly zero-energy buildings, and to confirm energy performance strategies for new nearly zero-energy buildings. To enhance the usability of the heat flux meter method, the dissertation compares different criteria for determining conditions for stopping the test during in situ experimental campaigns when measuring the thermal transmittance of existing buildings’ façades using the heat flow meter method. This will help to reduce practitioners’ uncertainty about the duration of experimental campaigns for obtaining accurate actual thermal transmittance of existing buildings’ façades. The dissertation concludes by outlining the main contributions of this research. The subjects that were raised during the research undertaken although they could not be addressed are commented and proposed as future work. Reduir la diferència entre el rendiment energètic previst i real dels edificis és necessari per tal d’augmentar el rendiment energètic dels edificis existents i assolir els objectius sobre eficiència energètica de la Unió Europea en el “Marc sobre clima i energia per al 2030”. La construcció és considerada el sector amb més potencial d'estalvi energètic. Concretament, el condicionament tèrmic dels edificis mitjançant calefacció té un potencial d'estalvi energètic considerable. La transmitància tèrmica és el paràmetre fonamental per caracteritzar les pèrdues de calor a través de les envolvents de l’edifici. Tanmateix, diversos investigadors han demostrat que les hipòtesis sobre la pèrdua de calor dels edificis abans i després d’una rehabilitació no són correctes. En aquest sentit, es fa necessari realitzar mesures in situ amb elevada precisió per proporcionar informació sobre la transmitància tèrmica real de les façanes. El propòsit d’aquesta tesi és contribuir a reduir la bretxa del rendiment energètic en els edificis residencials. Per això, l'objectiu d'aquesta dissertació és millorar la precisió en la realització de mesures in situ de la transmitància tèrmica real de les façanes dels edificis residencials existents usant el mètode estandarditzat del mesurador de flux de calor (HFM), per assegurar l'èxit en la presa de decisions durant els processos de renovació energètica dels edificis existents i confirmar estratègies d'eficiència energètica per a nous edificis de consum d’energia quasi nul. L'anàlisi dels paràmetres d’assaig per a la mesura in situ de la transmitància tèrmica no està totalment especificada en l'estàndard ISO utilitzat extensivament. Pel que fa als procediments de càlcul, el mètode que s’utilitza de forma més àmplia pels investigadors és el mètode de mitjanes. Poques iniciatives utilitzen el mètode dinàmic degut a la seva complexitat. La investigació avalua les implicacions d'utilitzar els diferents mètodes de càlcul estandarditzats per verificar quin s’ajusta millor als valors teòrics de referència. A més, es fomenta i facilita la usabilitat del mètode dinàmic estandarditzat mitjançant un procediment de càlcul, definint un full de càlcul programat accessible per als professionals. La dissertació proposa un sistema de classificació de façanes per facilitar la selecció de façanes per a la seva posterior anàlisi del rendiment tèrmic de les façanes del sector de l'habitatge. La classificació de façanes d'edificis residencials existents es basa en la caracterització de la part opaca de les façanes. La dissertació continua explorant els límits dels requisits per a la utilització del mètode HFM per a refinar les condicions d’assaig en les façanes amb baixa transmitància tèrmica. Aquestes façanes es promouen cada vegada més per tal de complir amb els objectius de la Directiva 2010/31/CE. Tot i així, diversos investigadors han demostrat que realitzar mesures in situ precises en aquest tipus de façanes és un repte. Investigar els límits d'aplicació del mètode HFM per a la mesura in situ de la transmitància tèrmica en façanes amb baixa transmitància tèrmica permetrà assegurar el compliment de les polítiques de transició d'edificis existents a edificis de consum energètic quasi nul (nZEB), i confirmar estratègies d'eficiència energètica per a nous edificis nZEB. Per millorar la usabilitat del mètode HFM, aquesta tesi analitza diferents criteris per a determinar les condicions d’aturada de l’assaig durant les campanyes experimentals per mesurar in situ la transmitància tèrmica de les façanes. Els resultats ajudaran a reduir la incertesa sobre la durada de les campanyes experimentals per obtenir una transmitància tèrmica real precisa de les façanes dels edificis existents. La tesi conclou resumint les principals aportacions d'aquesta investigació. Els temes que s’han plantejat durant la investigació realitzada, i que no s'ha pogut abordar, es comenten i es proposen com a línies de treball futures

Esta metodología está orientada a evaluar el impacto medioambiental de los edificios, su coste económico y su efecto social, teniendo en cuenta todo el ciclo de vida, de una manera sistematizada, flexible, simple, holística y orientada a la comparación de los resultados. Cada edificio tiene sus propias características y la aplicación del análisis de ciclo de vida (ACV) es diferente para cada caso. Pero los edificios también presentan características comunes, como materiales, procesos de construcción, instalaciones, elementos constructivos y uso del edificio. Estas similitudes deberían permitir una fácil comparación entre edificios, especialmente los que son del mismo tipo constructivo. Sin embargo, la interpretación, el objetivo, el alcance y los límites del sistema de un análisis de ciclo de vida hacen que los resultados sean difícilmente comparables entre sí, aunque los edificios a comparar sean semejantes. La metodología estándar de ACV es apta para todos los productos, procesos y servicios. Sin embargo, es muy abierta y requiere que se hagan muchas reiteraciones. La metodología propuesta ajusta la metodología estándar de ACV para su uso exclusivo en los edificios, evitando reiteraciones, adaptándose a todas las maneras de proceder de los usuarios de la metodología, que sirva para todos los edificios y para los diferentes ámbitos de la sostenibilidad. La metodología se compone de cinco fases. En la primera fase se define el sistema y las características generales del estudio. En la segunda fase se reúne la documentación necesaria que se usará en el resto de la metodología. En la tercera fase se procesa esta información contenida en la documentación y se realiza el inventario de datos. En la cuarta fase, utilizando los datos del inventario, se realizan por una parte los cálculos necesarios y por otra el análisis del ciclo de vida. Finalmente en la quinta y última fase se exponen los resultados. También se han realizado tres adaptaciones de la metodología para usos específicos. La primera adaptación es para análisis de alternativas, en el que al variar un parámetro o combinación de parámetros se puede ver qué alternativa es mejor para un cierto propósito. La segunda adaptación es para la rehabilitación, en el que el edificio aún no ha llegado al fin de su vida útil y se desea disminuir el consumo energético y aumentar el bienestar y comodidad de los ocupantes. La última adaptación es para un parque de edificios, que es un conjunto de edificios que conforman un barrio, un distrito, una ciudad, una región, un país o un conjunto de países. La aplicación de la metodología a un caso práctico confirma que la metodología es apta para ser empleada y se obtienen los resultados esperados para la realización del ACV según el método estándar. Un análisis de ciclo de vida adaptado al dominio de los edificios resulta más simple y directo que uno general, llegando a los mismos resultados. La utilización de esta metodología evita una dispersión en la manera de procesar los datos y, junto con la difusión de los datos relevantes de los edificios, permite una mayor facilidad en la comparación de los resultados entre diferentes estudios que apliquen esta metodología. Además, la metodología tiene la utilidad de recoger y organizar la información relativa al edificio, lo que permite elaborar un resumen con la función de comunicar. También asiste el proceso de diseño, dejando ver cuáles son los aspectos clave y cuál es su importancia relativa. Por tanto, es considerablemente útil para los actores (promotor, proyectista, propietarios y usuarios) que toman decisiones en la etapa de diseño y que puedan desarrollar estrategias adecuadas a los objetivos propuestos. Esta metodología mejora cada una de las fases del edificio y su conjunto, incrementando la competitividad, la satisfacción social y garantizando la sostenibilidad., This methodology is aimed at assessing the environmental impact of buildings, their economic cost and social impact, taking into account the entire life cycle in a systematic, flexible, simple, holistic manner and focused on the comparison of results. Each building has its own characteristics and the application of the life-cycle assessment (LCA) is different in each case. But buildings also have common characteristics, such as materials, construction processes, facilities, building materials and building use. These similarities should enable straightforward comparison between buildings, especially those that are of the same construction type. However, the interpretation, objective, scope and system limits of a life-cycle assessment mean that the results are barely comparable, even if the buildings being compared are similar. The LCA standard methodology is suitable for all products, processes and services. However, it is very open and requires many iterations. The proposed method adjusts the LCA standard methodology for its exclusive use in buildings, avoiding repetition, adapting to all ways of acting from methodology users, and working for all different buildings and areas of sustainability. The methodology consists of five phases. In the first phase the system and the general characteristics of the study are defined. In the second phase the necessary documentation to be used in the rest of the methodology is gathered. In the third phase the information found in the documentation is processed and the inventory data is carried out. In the fourth phase, using the inventory data, the required calculations and analysis of the life cycle are carried out. Finally in the fifth and final phase the results are presented. Three adaptations to the methodology for specific uses have also been made. The first adaptation consists in analysis of alternatives, in which by changing a parameter or combination of parameters, the best alternative for a certain purpose is revealed. The second adjustment consists in refurbishment, in which the building has not yet reached the end of its useful life and it is desired to reduce energy consumption and improve the welfare and comfort of the occupants. The last adjustment consists in dwelling stock, groups of buildings that make up a neighbourhood, district, city, region, country or group of countries. The application of the methodology to a case study confirms that the methodology is suitable for use and that the results are comparable to those using the LCA standard methodology. A life-cycle assessment adapted to the domain of the buildings is as simple and straightforward as a general one, obtaining the same results. Using this methodology a dispersion in the way of processing the data is avoided. The spread of relevant data for the buildings allows for greater ease in comparing results between different studies that apply this methodology. The methodology is useful to gather and organize information about buildings, allowing for the preparation of a summary, with the intention to communicate. It also assists in the design process, highlighting the key issues and what are their relative importance. It is therefore significantly useful for actors who make decisions in the design stage and develop strategies tailored to the objectives. This methodology improves each of the phases of the building process and the whole building, and it increases competitiveness, social satisfaction and ensures sustainability.
