Abstract

The question at which layer network functionality is presented or abstracted remains a research challenge. Traditionally, network functionality was either placed into the core network, middleboxes, or into the operating system -- but recent developments have expanded the design space to directly introduce functionality into the application (and in particular into the browser) as a way to expose it to the user. Given the context of emerging path-aware networking technology, an interesting question arises: which layer should handle the new features? We argue that the browser is becoming a powerful platform for network innovation, where even user-driven properties can be implemented in an OS-agnostic fashion. We demonstrate the feasibility of geo-fenced browsing using a prototype browser extension, realized by the SCION path-aware networking architecture, without introducing any significant performance overheads., Comment: 1 table, 6 figures

Abstract

REGISTRY Investigators of the European Huntington's Disease Network and COHORT Investigators of the Huntington Study Group., Studying individuals with extreme phenotypes could facilitate the understanding of disease modification by genetic or environmental factors. Our aim was to identify Huntington's disease (HD) patients with extreme symbol digit modality test (SDMT) scores. We first examined in HD the contribution of cognitive measures of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) in predicting clinical endpoints. The language-independent SDMT was used to identify patients performing very well or very poorly relative to their CAG and age cohort. We used data from REGISTRY and COHORT observational study participants (5,603 HD participants with CAG repeats above 39 with 13,868 visits) and of 1,006 healthy volunteers (with 2,241 visits), included to identify natural aging and education effects on cognitive measures. Separate Cox proportional hazards models with CAG, age at study entry, education, sex, UHDRS total motor score and cognitive (SDMT, verbal fluency, Stroop tests) scores as covariates were used to predict clinical endpoints. Quantile regression for longitudinal language-independent SDMT data was used for boundary (2.5% and 97.5% quantiles) estimation and extreme score analyses stratified by age, education, and CAG repeat length. Ten percent of HD participants had an extreme SDMT phenotype for at least one visit. In contrast, only about 3% of participants were consistent SDMT extremes at two or more visits. The thresholds for the one-visit and two-visit extremes can be used to classify existing and new individuals. 3. Capuchin monkeys do not differentiate between images of different facial width

Abstract

Previous research has shown links between the facial Width-to-Height Ratio (fWHR) and Assertiveness in brown capuchins, Sapajus apella. Similar to research in humans that suggests the male face may be a cue to dominance-related traits such as aggression, in capuchins, wider faces are associated with higher Assertiveness. In the current study we assessed whether capuchins differentiate between wide versus narrow faces. Using facial photographs manipulated for higher or lower fWHR, we examined capuchins' latency to approach a wide or narrow face, and compared this with their latency to approach an alpha versus non-alpha group member. We predicted that if capuchins perceive wider faces of unfamiliar individuals as more assertive than those with narrower faces, then they would exhibit a longer latency to approach the wide over the narrow face condition. Whilst capuchins did exhibit a significantly longer latency to approach alpha versus non-alpha group members, there was no significant difference in their latency to approach either manipulated facial condition. These results suggest that capuchins do not respond to static images in the same way as they respond to real conspecifics, or that they do not use facial width as a cue to Assertiveness in their approach behaviour. We propose alternative methodology to explore whether face width is a cue to social status or assertive traits in nonhuman primates.

Abstract

We conducted a meta-analysis of Parkinson's disease genome-wide association studies using a common set of 7,893,274 variants across 13,708 cases and 95,282 controls. Twenty-six loci were identified as having genome-wide significant association; these and 6 additional previously reported loci were then tested in an independent set of 5,353 cases and 5,551 controls. Of the 32 tested SNPs, 24 replicated, including 6 newly identified loci. Conditional analyses within loci showed that four loci, including GBA, GAK-DGKQ, SNCA and the HLA region, contain a secondary independent risk variant. In total, we identified and replicated 28 independent risk variants for Parkinson's disease across 24 loci. Although the effect of each individual locus was small, risk profile analysis showed substantial cumulative risk in a comparison of the highest and lowest quintiles of genetic risk (odds ratio (OR) = 3.31, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.55-4.30; P = 2 × 10-16). 5. Prospective assessment of microsatellite instability in gastrointestinal neoplasia in Ashkenazi and non-Ashkenazi Jews

Abstract

Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a useful marker of replication errors in neoplasia, resulting from mutations in the mismatch repair (MMR) genes. Nearly all hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) and about 15% of sporadic colorectal cancers (CRC) exhibit high MSI (MSI-H). The use of the Amsterdam criteria for HNPCC diagnosis may fail to identify many HNPCC cases. Genetic screening of mutations in the MMR genes is laborious, time-consuming, expensive and limited by a low detection rate. Hence, MSI testing is a feasible and cost-effective method to select suspected HNPCC patients for genetic analysis. MSI has not been used routinely or prospectively in the assessment of newly diagnosed CRC.To prospectively evaluate MSI status in a cohort of patients seen at the Gastrointestinal Oncology Unit of the Tel Aviv Medical Center.Ninety-eight consecutive patients with colonic or gastric neoplasia were included. Samples from neoplastic and normal mucosa were obtained at the time of diagnostic endoscopy. MSI was determined based on five Bethesda markers using standard polymerase chain reaction procedures.The overall incidence of MSI was 20.4%. MSI-H was detected in 22.2% of CRC, 20% of colonic adenomas and 18.2% of gastric neoplasia. MSI-positive neoplasia tended to display multiple colonic sites, moderate-well differentiated tumors, and a higher rate of familial gastrointestinal neoplasia.MSI may be involved in the early stages of some colorectal tumorigenesis pathways since it may be detected in adenomas. MSI may serve as a cost-effective, reliable and important tool in the selection of HNPCC-suspected families for genetic testing. A small study population, referral bias or ethnic variation might explain the higher MSI rate. It is suggested that, similar to familial adenomatous polyposis, a state of attenuated HNPCC may exist. Hence, the clinical approach in positive patients, and their family members, should be conducted as for families with genetically proven HNPCC.

Abstract

The work done deals with the concept of Volunteered Geographic Information and is based on the use of a mobile mapping collection tool to retrieve geographical data from an urban fieldwork. The research has been carried on during the academic year 2014/2015, involving students from the course of Geography of Networks within the post graduate degrees in ‘Economics’ and ‘Business’ of the University of Trieste (Italy). The intent was testing the potential of crowdsourcing in retrieving data using a bottom up approach, relying on a set of trained and aware ‘urban sensors’ as data collectors. This allowed us to derive first-hand geographical data concerning a particular topic and analyze its spatial distribution by means of Geographical Information Systems and spatial analytical tools. The topic studied was represented by the urban ‘movida’, the analysis of the areas of the city that are more or less active during the days and during the week. This major aim was also coupled with an ancillary one, as the coverage of Wi-Fi hotspots and networks over the urban area of Trieste. It is known that many Italian cities still do not allow a very wide coverage of wireless networks to access the Internet. The city of Trieste, on the border between Italy and Slovenia, is suited with a certain degree of coverage, particularly in main roads and squares, thanks to free Wi-Fi coverage managed by the municipality and an academic network of Eduroam system, quite spread over European and world cities hosting universities and research centers.
