1. Inclusive Pion Double Charge Exchange in 4He at Intermediate Energies

Abstract

A systematic experimental study of inclusive pion double charge exchange in 4He has been undertaken. The reaction 4He(pi+,pi-)4p was observed at incident energies 120, 150, 180, 240 and 270 MeV; the 4He(pi-,pi+)4n reaction was observed at incident energies 180 and 240 MeV. At each incident energy, the doubly differential cross section was measured at three to five outgoing pion laboratory angles between 25 deg and 130 deg. At each angle, cross sections were measured over the range of outgoing pion energies from 10 MeV up to the kinematic limit for the reaction in which the final state consists of the oppositely charged pion plus four free nucleons. The spectra of outgoing pions are strikingly different from those observed for the inclusive double charge exchange reaction in heavier nuclei, but resemble those observed in the (pi-,pi+) reaction in 3He. The forward-angle spectra in the 3He and 4He reactions exhibit a prominent peak at high outgoing pion energies. Interpretation of the peaks in 3He (4He) as a three- (four-)nucleon resonance is ruled out by kinematic analysis. The results of a calculation, wherein the double charge exchange reaction is assumed to proceed as two sequential single charge exchange interactions, suggest that the high-energy peak is naturally explained by this double scattering mechanism. Non-static treatment of the pi-N interactions and the inclusion of nuclear binding effects appear to be important in reproducing the shape of the energy spectra at forward angles., 59 pages, 22 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Positive pion absorption was studied in an almost 4π geometry allowing simultaneous measurements of various charge and neutral multiplicities. Total absorption cross sections and its decomposition into the most important channels is determined. The results are presented for N, Ar and Xe nuclei at incident pion energies of 118,162 and 239 MeV. The role of multinucleon emission in the absorption process is emphasized., Proučava se pionska apsorpcija s blizu 4π detekcijom koja dozvoljava istovremeno mjerenje raznih nabojskih i neutralnih višestrukosti. Određuju se ukupni udarni presjeci i njihovo razlaganje u najvažnije kanale. Predstavljaju se rezultati za jezgre N, Ar i Xe na energijama 118,162 i 239 MeV. Ističe se uloga višenukleonske emisije u procesu apsorpcije.

Abstract

We have measured cross sections for the $ (��^+,��^\pm p)$ reactions on ${\rm ^3H}$, ${\rm ^4He}$, ${\rm ^6Li}$ and ${\rm ^7Li}$ in quasi-free kinematics at incident pion beam energy 500 MeV. An enhancement of the $(��^+,��^- p)$ cross section in this kinematics is observed. If this is interpreted as due to quasi-free scattering from pre-existing $��$ components of the nuclear wave function, the extracted probabilities are in agreement with theoretical expectations., 3 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS) has been designed and built at the Paul Scherrer Institute to study multiparticle final states following pion-nucleus absorption. It consists of a 28-sector cylinder of plastic scintillators of 1.6 m active length and 1.4 m diameter, two cylindrical wire chambers, and two 14-sector plastic scintillator end-caps which close each end. The nearly 4pi solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertaities associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The design and the performance of the LADS detector are presented.

Abstract

Measurements have been made of pi+ absorption on He3 at T_pi+ = 118, 162, and 239 MeV using the Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS). The nearly 4pi solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertainties associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The total absorption cross section is reported. In addition, the total cross section is divided into components in which only two or all three nucleons play a significant role in the process.
