Abstract: We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $\omega_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\circ}$C. The ratio $\omega_a / {\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_\mu({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$, the new experimental average of $a_\mu({\rm Exp}) = 116\,592\,061(41)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.35\,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations, Comment: 10 pages; 4 figures

Abstract: The Muon g - 2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency omega(m)(a) to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of a(mu) (FNAL) = 116 592 040(54) x 10(-11) (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis, and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the 11 separate determinations of omega(m)(a), and the systematic uncertainties on the result.

Abstract: A search for sub-GeV dark matter produced from collisions of the Fermilab 8 GeV Booster protons with a steel beam dump was performed by the MiniBooNE-DM Collaboration using data from $1.86 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in a dedicated run. The MiniBooNE detector, consisting of 818 tons of mineral oil and located 490 meters downstream of the beam dump, is sensitive to a variety of dark matter initiated scattering reactions. Three dark matter interactions are considered for this analysis: elastic scattering off nucleons, inelastic neutral pion production, and elastic scattering off electrons. Multiple data sets were used to constrain flux and systematic errors, and time-of-flight information was employed to increase sensitivity to higher dark matter masses. No excess from the background predictions was observed, and 90$\%$ confidence level limits were set on the vector portal and leptophobic dark matter models. New parameter space is excluded in the vector portal dark matter model with a dark matter mass between 5 and 50$\,\mathrm{MeV}\,c^{-2}$. The reduced neutrino flux allowed to test if the MiniBooNE neutrino excess scales with the production of neutrinos. Abstract: Reproducibility is a defining feature of science. However, because of strong incentives for innovation and weak incentives for confirmation, direct replication is rarely practiced or published. The Reproducibility Project is an open, large-scale, collaborative effort to systematically examine the rate and predictors of reproducibility in psychological science. So far, 72 volunteer researchers from 41 institutions have organized to openly and transparently replicate studies published in three prominent psychological journals in 2008. Multiple methods will be used to evaluate the findings, calculate an empirical rate of replication, and investigate factors that predict reproducibility. Whatever the result, a better understanding of reproducibility will ultimately improve confidence in scientific methodology and findings.

Abstract: Radiation-induced damage of ocular, orbital and eyelid structures are mainly reported for the optic nerve, retina, lens and lacrimal gland. Dose-volume relationships are, however, inaccurate due to the small volume of most of the organs at risk involved and limited ability of irradiation techniques to spare these structures in the pre-IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) era. The ability of newest radiation techniques including IMRT and proton therapy to generate steep dose gradients may yield more accurate models in the future. Some toxicities are severe and irreversible, leading to vision loss, as in the case of radiation-induced optic neuropathy for which curative treatments are suboptimal. Other toxicities can lead to reversible vision loss but can be surgically corrected, as is the case for radiation-induced cataract. In this paper, we will review the dose effects for the ocular; orbital and eyelid structures.

Abstract: Precision measurements of fundamental quantities have played a key role in pointing the way forward in developing our understanding of the universe. Though the enormously successful Standard Model (SM) describes the breadth of both historical and modern experimental particle physics data, it is necessarily incomplete. The muon $g-2$ experiment executed at Brookhaven concluded in 2001 and measured a discrepancy of more than three standard deviations compared to the Standard Model calculation. Arguably, this remains the strongest hint of physics beyond the SM. A new initiative at Fermilab is under construction to improve the experimental accuracy four-fold. Abstract: The Muon (g-2) Experiment, E989 at Fermilab, will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment a factor-of-four more precisely than was done in E821 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. The E821 result appears to be greater than the Standard-Model prediction by more than three standard deviations. When combined with expected improvement in the Standard-Model hadronic contributions, E989 should be able to determine definitively whether or not the E821 result is evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. After a review of the physics motivation and the basic technique, which will use the muon storage ring built at BNL and now relocated to Fermilab, the design of the new experiment is presented. Abstract: The MINERvA(6) experiment is designed to perform precision studies of neutrino-nucleus scattering using nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) neutrinos incident at 1-20 GeV in the NuMI beam at Fermilab. This article presents a detailed description of the MINERvA detector and describes the ex situ and in situ techniques employed to characterize the detector and monitor its performance. The detector is composed of a finely segmented scintillator-based inner tracking region surrounded by electromagnetic and hadronic sampling calorimetry. The upstream portion of the detector includes planes of graphite, iron and lead interleaved between tracking planes to facilitate the study of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. Observations concerning the detector response over sustained periods of running are reported. The detector design and methods of operation have relevance to future neutrino experiments in which segmented scintillator tracking is utilized. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Abstract: High-quality charged current quasielastic scattering data have recently been reported for both muon neutrinos and antineutrinos from several accelerator-based neutrino experiments. Measurements from MiniBooNE were the first to indicate that more complex nuclear effects, now thought to be the result of nucleon pair correlations, may contribute to neutrino quasielastic samples at a much higher significance than previously assumed. These findings are now being tested by MINER$\nu$A and other contemporary neutrino experiments. Presented here is a comparison of data from MiniBooNE and MINER$\nu$A to a few example parametrizations of these nuclear effects. It has been demonstrated that such effects may bias future measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters and so this issue continues to press the neutrino community. A comparison of data over a large range of neutrino energies is one approach to exploring the extent to which such nucleon correlations may influence our understanding and subsequent modeling of neutrino quasielastic scattering., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: A proposal submitted to the FNAL PAC is described to search for light sub-GeV WIMP dark matter at MiniBooNE. The possibility to steer the beam past the target and into an absorber leads to a significant reduction in neutrino background, allowing for a sensitive search for elastic scattering of WIMPs off nucleons or electrons in the detector. Dark matter models involving a vector mediator can be probed in a parameter region consistent with the required thermal relic density, and which overlaps the region in which these models can resolve the muon g-2 discrepancy. Estimates of signal significance are presented for various operational modes and parameter points. The experimental approach outlined for applying MiniBooNE to a light WIMP search may also be applicable to other neutrino facilities., 27 pages, 18 figures. Abstract: The MiniBooNE and SciBooNE collaborations report the results of a joint search for short baseline disappearance of \bar{{\nu}_{\mu}} at Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beamline. The MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector and the SciBooNE tracking detector observe antineutrinos from the same beam, therefore the combined analysis of their datasets serves to partially constrain some of the flux and cross section uncertainties. Uncertainties in the {\nu}_{\mu} background were constrained by neutrino flux and cross section measurements performed in both detectors. A likelihood ratio method was used to set a 90% confidence level upper limit on \bar{{\nu}_{\mu}} disappearance that dramatically improves upon prior limits in the {\Delta}m^2=0.1-100 eV^2 region., Comment: 15 pages, 27 figures

Abstract: Up to now, the impact of acidification on the boring microflora of calcifying organisms has only been addressed by Tribollet et al. (2009), in a short-term laboratory experiment. The study by Tribollet et al. (2009) is the first to show an accelerated weathering of limestone substrates by boring microflora when exposed to high partial pressure of carbon dioxide (750 ppm). The present study aims to investigate the impact of acidification on the microflora of two aragonitic substrates in volcanic carbon dioxide vents in Ischia in Italy. Three sites were selected along a gradient of pH and other environmental data (reported by Rodolpho-Metalpa et al. (2011)): a control site (C; pH = 8.02, close to current seawater pH), a S1 site (pH = 7.24) and a S2 site (pH = 7.44). To highlight the impact of ocean acidification on these micro-organimes, their species diversity was determined and several biological parameters were measured. These data were obtained through the realization of thin sections, which were observed under an optical microscope, and selected observations made with scanning electron microscopy. The results of this study are contradictory to the reference study. Indeed, for low pH rate of carbonate dissolution seems slow. To explain the opposition of the two main studies we hypothesize that there is a pH threshold at which bioerosion by boring microflora is slowed. A study on a pH gradient ranging from 8.1 to 7 with increments of 0.1 or 0.2 pH units would help to better understand the influence of ocean acidification on boring microflora; L’impact de l’acidification sur les microperforants des organismes calcifiants n’a été abordé pour le moment que par Tribollet et al. (2009) lors d’une expérience réalisée à court terme et en aquarium. Cette étude a montré une accélération de l’altération des substrats calcaires par la microflore perforante lors d’une exposition à une forte pression partielle en dioxyde de carbone (750 ppm). L’étude présentée ici a pour objectif d’étudier l’impact de l’acidification sur la microflore perforante de deux substrats aragonitiques en milieu naturel, au niveau de résurgences de CO2 à Ischia en Italie. Trois sites ont été sélectionnés selon un gradient de pH et en se basant sur les données environnementales (de ces même sites) de 2008 rapportées par Rodolpho-Metalpa et al. (2011) : un site contrôle (C) (pH = 8,02, proche du pH océanique actuel), un site S1 (pH = 7,24) et un site S2 (pH = 7,44). Afin de mettre en évidence l’impact de l’acidification de l’eau de mer sur ces micro-organimes, plusieurs paramètres biologiques ont été mesurés et leur diversité spécifique a été déterminée. Ces données ont été obtenues grâce à la réalisation de lames minces qui ont été observées au microscope optique et à des observations faites au microscope électronique à balayage. Les résultats de cette étude vont dans le sens contraire de l’étude de référence. En effet, pour des pH faibles l’activité bioérosive semble ralentie. Pour expliquer l’opposition des deux études une des principales hypothèses est qu’il existe un seuil de pH à partir duquel la microbioérosion est ralentie. Une étude réalisée selon un gradient de pH allant de 8,1 à 7 passants par des paliers de 0,1 ou 0,2 unité pH permettrait de mieux appréhender les résultats des deux études et ainsi d’aller plus loin dans les conclusions.

Abstract: We propose adding 300 mg/l PPO to the existing MiniBooNE detector mineral oil to increase the scintillation response. This will allow the detection of associated neutrons and increase sensitivity to final-state nucleons in neutrino interactions. This increased capability will enable an independent test of whether the current excess seen in the MiniBooNE oscillation search is signal or background. Abstract: The SciBooNE and MiniBooNE collaborations report the results of a \nu_\mu disappearance search in the \Delta m^2 region of 0.5-40 eV^2. The neutrino rate as measured by the SciBooNE tracking detectors is used to constrain the rate at the MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector in the first joint analysis of data from both collaborations. Two separate analyses of the combined data samples set 90% confidence level (CL) limits on \nu_\mu disappearance in the 0.5-40 eV^2 \Delta m^2 region, with an improvement over previous experimental constraints between 10 and 30 eV^2., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Abstract: International audience; AIM: To detect major chromosomal aberrations from enucleated uveal melanoma and relate them to hepatic metastasis and survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten uveal melanomas enucleated between 2005 and 2008 in the Lyon Croix-Rousse Hospital were retrospectively analyzed using a 19 000-clone comparative genomic hybridization microarray. RESULTS: The most frequent imbalances were the loss of chromosome 3 (8/10), gain of the 8q arm (7/10) or the entire chromosome 8 (2/10), and gain of the 6p arm (2/10). Most metastatic tumors (6/7) and all cases of death (5/5) concerned melanoma with monosomy 3 and gain of the 8q arm. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Genome-wide array comparative genomic hybridization is a reliable tool for identifying uveal melanoma genomic imbalances. Gains of the 8q arm with monosomy 3 are frequent and are strongly associated with poor outcome. Gains of the 6p arm are rare and have a better prognosis. There is a mutually exclusive relationship between monosomy 3 and chromosome 6 abnormalities in our study. These results confirm previously published reports.

Abstract: Using a high-statistics, high-purity sample of $\nu_\mu$-induced charged current, charged pion events in mineral oil (CH$_2$), MiniBooNE reports a collection of interaction cross sections for this process. This includes measurements of the CC$\pi^+$ cross section as a function of neutrino energy, as well as flux-averaged single- and double-differential cross sections of the energy and direction of both the final-state muon and pion. In addition, each of the single-differential cross sections are extracted as a function of neutrino energy to decouple the shape of the MiniBooNE energy spectrum from the results. Abstract: Using a custom 3 \v{C}erenkov-ring fitter, we report cross sections for $\nu_\mu$-induced charged-current single $\pi^0$ production on mineral oil (\chtwo) from a sample of 5810 candidate events with 57% signal purity over an energy range of $0.5-2.0$GeV. This includes measurements of the absolute total cross section as a function of neutrino energy, and flux-averaged differential cross sections measured in terms of $Q^2$, $\mu^-$ kinematics, and $\pi^0$ kinematics. The sample yields a flux-averaged total cross section of $(9.2\pm0.3_{stat.}\pm1.5_{syst.})\times10^{-39}$cm$^2$/CH$_2$ at mean neutrino energy of 0.965GeV., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, and 11 tables

Abstract: A high-statistics sample of charged-current muon neutrino scattering events collected with the MiniBooNE experiment is analyzed to extract the first measurement of the double differential cross section (d(2)sigma/dT(mu)dcos theta(mu)) for charged-current quasielastic (CCQE) scattering on carbon. This result features minimal model dependence and provides the most complete information on this process to date. With the assumption of CCQE scattering, the absolute cross section as a function of neutrino energy (sigma[E-nu]) and the single differential cross section (d sigma/dQ(2)) are extracted to facilitate comparison with previous measurements. These quantities may be used to characterize an effective axial-vector form factor of the nucleon and to improve the modeling of low-energy neutrino interactions on nuclear targets. The results are relevant for experiments searching for neutrino oscillations., This work was conducted with support from Fermilab, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation.

Abstract: MiniBooNE reports the first absolute cross sections for neutral current single \pi^0 production on CH_2 induced by neutrino and antineutrino interactions measured from the largest sets of NC \pi^0 events collected to date. The principal result consists of differential cross sections measured as functions of \pi^0 momentum and \pi^0 angle averaged over the neutrino flux at MiniBooNE. We find total cross sections of (4.76+/-0.05_{stat}+/-0.76_{sys})*10^{-40} cm^2/nucleon at a mean energy of =808 MeV and (1.48+/-0.05_{stat}+/-0.23_{sys})*10^{-40} cm^2/nucleon at a mean energy of =664 MeV for \nu_\mu and \bar\nu_\mu induced production, respectively. In addition, we have included measurements of the neutrino and antineutrino total cross sections for incoherent exclusive NC 1\pi^0 production corrected for the effects of final state interactions to compare to prior results., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The MiniBooNE Collaboration reports initial results from a search for (nu) over bar (mu) -> (nu) over bar (e) oscillations. A signal-blind analysis was performed using a data sample corresponding to 3.39 x 10(20) protons on target. The data are consistent with background prediction across the full range of neutrino energy reconstructed assuming quasielastic scattering, 200 < E-nu(QE) < 3000 MeV: 144 electronlike events have been observed in this energy range, compared to an expectation of 139.2 +/- 17.6 events. No significant excess of events has been observed, both at low energy, 200-475 MeV, and at high energy, 475-1250 MeV. The data are inconclusive with respect to antineutrino oscillations suggested by data from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector at Los Alamos National Laboratory., We acknowledge the support of Fermilab, the Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation, and we acknowledge Los Alamos National Laboratory for LDRD funding. Abstract: MiniBooNE reports the first absolute cross sections for neutral current single ��^0 production on CH_2 induced by neutrino and antineutrino interactions measured from the largest sets of NC ��^0 events collected to date. The principal result consists of differential cross sections measured as functions of ��^0 momentum and ��^0 angle averaged over the neutrino flux at MiniBooNE. We find total cross sections of (4.76+/-0.05_{stat}+/-0.76_{sys})*10^{-40} cm^2/nucleon at a mean energy of =808 MeV and (1.48+/-0.05_{stat}+/-0.23_{sys})*10^{-40} cm^2/nucleon at a mean energy of =664 MeV for ��_��and \bar��_��induced production, respectively. In addition, we have included measurements of the neutrino and antineutrino total cross sections for incoherent exclusive NC 1��^0 production corrected for the effects of final state interactions to compare to prior results., 13 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: International audience; In spite of important progress in the local treatment of uveal melanoma, the most frequent primitive intraocular tumor, 15%-30% of patients still die because of tumor metastasis. This tumor is characterized by constitutive chemoresistance, thwarting any attempt to control it using the usual chemotherapy protocols. The chemoresistance of uveal melanoma is mainly due to the typical multidrug resistance phenotype (MDR), which is linked to overexpression of membrane proteins that actively extrude anticancer drugs from the cell. Typical MDR is particularly complex in this tumor since several chemoresistance-related proteins are simultaneously produced. The negative prognostic significance of the overexpression of P-glycoprotein, the main representative among the typical MDR-related proteins, was shown in uveal melanoma. The atypical MDR phenotype, which refers to other chemoresistance mechanisms such as resistance to apoptosis also contributes to the chemoresistance of uveal melanoma. Thanks to the recent progress in molecular biology, the chemosensitization strategies of gene therapy approaches, which aim at weakening the pathological activity of MDR genes in cancer cells, are currently on the rise. This approach will disrupt current therapeutic strategies and necessarily improve and standardize the methods used to characterize the chemoresistance profile of this cancer. Recent work suggests that this category of uveal melanomas represents a distinct pathological entity from that associated with normal disomy 3. Chromosome 6 aberrations probably make up a second entry point into the process of carcinogenesis, while gains in 8q seem to appear later in the natural history of uveal melanoma because of their higher frequency in larger tumors. Progress in genome analysis has identified regions in chromosomes 3, 6, and 8 as those most probably involved in tumorigenesis. Abstract: The typical turgid Koch type and the non-turgid variant form (Listeria-type) of the tuberculin skin test responses were studied in 76 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 29 apparently healthy factory worker controls from Surabaya in Indonesia; in general, the patients had more intense responses than the controls. The blood flow velocity (RBCflux) at the centre of the reaction was similar in all groups, but central relative slowing (a presumed forme fruste of severe ischaemia) was much more common in the Koch-type reactions in tuberculosis patients. In both groups of subjects, the overall density of cellular infiltrate (and the major populations of inflammatory cells) was greater in the typical Koch-type reactions than in the non-turgid variant reactions. Thus the Koch-type reactions were indubitably more intense in inflammatory terms than the non-turgid variant form, but the results of this study do not exclude the possibility that there were underlying qualitative differences in pathogenesis between reactions of the two types as well as the obvious difference in severity.

Abstract: We were greatly impressed by the Joint Tuberculosis Committee guidelines on the management of opportunist mycobacterial infections.1 We do, however, wonder why the word “opportunist” has been used to describe the mycobacteria, other than the M tuberculosis complex, that cause human disease. Abstract: There is a long standing discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction for the muon g-2 and the value measured by the Brookhaven E821 Experiment. At present the discrepancy stands at about three standard deviations, with a comparable accuracy between experiment and theory. Two new proposals -- at Fermilab and J-PARC -- plan to improve the experimental uncertainty by a factor of 4, and it is expected that there will be a significant reduction in the uncertainty of the Standard Model prediction. 48. T4 lymphopenia in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis

Abstract: The numbers of cells bearing the T3 (pan-T cell), the T4 (putative helper/inducer cells), the T8 (putative suppressor/cytotoxic cells) and B cell phenotypic markers were counted in venous blood samples from 26 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 29 healthy controls from East Java. The absolute T cell count was lower in the patients and T4 cells were fewer in patients (mean 748/mm3) than in controls (mean 1,043/mm3), but there were no significant differences in total T8 cell and B cell counts between patients and controls. The T4:T8 ratio was not disturbed in many patients, but it was less than 1.6 in 11 of 26 patients and in only three of 29 controls: this ratio was less than 1.2 (the lower limit of 'normal') in six patients but no controls. The intensity of the T4 lymphopenia was unrelated to the extent of the lesion seen radiologically or the size of the skin test reaction to PPD. Levels of interferon-alpha were not elevated in the serum of any of the patients or controls. It is suggested that the T4 lymphopenia was a reaction to the mycobacterial infection and not a manifestation of underlying secondary (acquired) immune deficiency.

Abstract: Effect of wind on the performance of a natural draft wet cooling tower. It is important to be able to forecast the effect of wind on the performance of natural draft wet cooling towers. Real towers were tested at Gardanne and Carling, one counter-flow, the other cross flow tower. The results were compared with those obtained in wind tunnel testing using two different models : - isothermal models, the assessment being based on Reynolds similarities ; - heating models, based on Froude similarities. The results of the tests are close enough to allow the action of the wind to be described and to disclose the main elements governing it., Il est important de pouvoir prédire l’influence du vent sur les performances des réfrigérants humides à tirage naturel. Des essais ont été faits sur les sites de Gardanne et de Carling sur des tours réelles, l’une à contre-courant, l’autre à courants croisés . Les résultats obtenus sont comparés à ceux d’essais en soufflerie utilisant deux simulations différentes : - soit des maquettes isothermes se rapprochant de la similitude de Reynolds, - soit des maquettes chauffantes en similitude de Froude. Abstract: Finned-tube heat exchanger for dry cooling tower. The most commonly used exchange surface for dry cooling towers is a finned-tube heat exchanger with compact equilateral meshing. The experimental determination of the laws of exchange and load loss on the air side of this type of tube bundle was undertaken for the range of speeds covering all foreseeable uses. Expressed in non-dimensional units, the exchange law has a continuous profile over the whole range studied. The load loss coefficient declines when the Reynolds index rises and the slope declines for a frontal speed of the order of 2 metres per second., La surface d'échange la plus répandue pour les réfrigérants secs est un échangeur à tubes ailetés à maillage équilatéral compact. Une détermination expérimentale des lois d'échange et de perte de charge côté air de ce type de faisceau a été réalisée pour une gamme de vitesse qui recouvre toutes les utilisations envisageables . Exprimée en nombres adimensionnels, la loi d'échange a une allure continue dans tout le domaine étudié.
