The supply chain network process for food or non-food need to comply with the Shariah principles start from stage of storage management, handling of raw materials, procurement, and until the stage of transportation. The purpose of this article is to understand the issues encountered in halal supply chain industrial parks (HSCIP) and propose a model for HSCIP in particular needed to acknowledge their practices conducted according to Shariah. The data collected based on interviews (preliminary data) and secondary data from academic journal articles, online magazines and websites based on selected keywords. The study contributes toward halal logistics operation areas especially in halal supply chain management. The results were also validated to be genuinely discussed for the aids and future practices of halal concept. The study sheds light into the model of halal logistics practices and the boundaries of halal parks.

The expansion of liberalized trade has forced companies to consider the global market demand to stay competitive. Hence, ports have started to embrace sustainability practices in their activities throughout port operations. Various research has suggested that there is more innovation when sustainability is adopted as an integral part of their business activities. This study established a halal-friendly sustainable port concept and its implementation in meeting the objectives of sustainability practices to boost innovation. To embed sustainability within port organizations, it is vital to create an organizational culture that supports innovation and integrative thinking. Based on the qualitative data obtained from 38 port stakeholders in the southern of Malaysia, the respondents supported a halal-friendly sustainable port as a potential innovation in meeting the objectives of the sustainable practices. Four components that were found crucial for the proposed framework reflect the novelty of the research and its successful implementation.

This study pursues to investigate the awareness and attitudes influences towards environmental management practices in the Malaysia logistics industry. The environmental management practice offers an important framework for a researcher to understand environmental changes and an opportunity to solve a country’s ecological difficulties. This factor is being introduced in the logistic industries because of the complexity of the attributes. It also explores the logistics companies’ willingness to adopt these practices. Based on an ongoing study, this paper insinuates a research model that defines the inter-relationships between the factors.

Malaysia is in a strategic location in the South East Asia for the halal Industry, witha predominant Muslim population. The halal certificate by the Department of IslamicDevelopment (JAKIM) is recognized globally. The halal hub is confined within theparameters of governance support and cooperation, such as political will to improvein terms of public service, governance structure, policy and all related to systematicgovernance. This study discusses the halal governance issue and the halal governancein Malaysia. Data was collected through series of focus groups interviews whichmakes this study exploratory in nature. The study applies purposive sampling, asinformation is conveniently available from specific target groups. The paper shall servea reference for the government halal authority, higher institutions and researcherstoward development of halal industry in Malaysia and focussing on halal supply chainactivities which involves ministry, department and agency roles.

There is an increasing growth of customers and regulators requesting enterprises to adopt the Environmental Management Practices (EMP) over the last 15 years and because of this, researchers and practitioners are becoming more interested in this area of study. This paper proposed an integrated model that combines the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Technology-Organization-Environment Model (TOE), two theories that are most often used in environment and innovation studies. In this paper, a model is created to show the relationship between TOE model, TPB theory and EMP implementation. With 205 valid questionnaires from the Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders (FMFF), the author tested the model on SPSS and AMOS. It was found that the environmental factor was the most influential factor affecting the adoption of EMP followed by organizational and technological factors. The entire TOE dimension and TPB theory greatly determines the company's adaptation of EMP. Finally, this study presents some suggestions to make EMP adaptation easier.

In the highly competitive economy, logistics performance measurement is a primary concern among practitioners and academia. The World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI) has produced the benchmark for more than 100 countries covering six main components that are related to the trade facilitation in the context of the logistics supply chain. However, the output of the index is based on logistics service providers, thus measuring the performance from the perspective of users, which does not only serve as a comparison study, but also remains as the ultimate study to prove the friendliness of logistics and trade facilitation involved in import and export processes. In the present work, six (6) components were used to assess logistics performance including environmental friendly. Results revealed that trade friendliness by the logistics services is improved and requires further analysis, according to the central hub of each sector in Malaysia. It attracts future development for the manufacturing industry by having excellent logistics services facilities.

An electrochemical sensor based on Al-MOF (CAU-1-MOF) fabricated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was utilized for hydroquinone (HQ) detection, an environmental pollutant. The CAU-1 MOF was synthesized by simple heating approach and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and B.E.T. techniques. The FT-IR results revealed the presence of C O vibration for CAU-1, which proved the incorporation of the amino-terephthalic acid into CAU-1. The XRD of the synthesized CAU-1-MOF was in good agreement with the existing CAU-1 (CCDC: 723320). Further, CAU-1 showed rod-shaped morphology with 280 nm size in average. Besides, CAU-1 had a huge surface area, 1349 m2 g−1 and a micropore volume, 0.41 cm3 g−1. The CAU-1 MOF was successfully fabricated on GCE using nafion as a binder and its electrochemical behaviour was investigated. The electrochemical behaviour of HQ was investigated at GCE/CAU-1 and studied its oxidation kinetics. The GCE/CAU-1 showed higher oxidation current for HQ than the bare GCE. Besides, this sensor shows good selectivity and anti-interference activities in HQ detection with the lowest detection limit, 0.067 µM and excellent sensitivity, 1471.4 µA/mM cm2. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was utilized in the determination of HQ in water samples and exhibited good recovery of 99.34%–103.93%, which suggested the practicability and reliability of the sensor, GCE/CAU-1 in the real-life application.

This paper reports on the initial findings on the research on halal air cargo logistics regional hub. There are still lacks of knowledge in halal air cargo logistics regional hub, and there are only a few researches that actually integrate the conventional air cargo hub with halal certification and also provide efficient logistics hub in the world. This paper will be focusing on the halal aspect of combination of the air cargo and logistics hubs, as it is still a niche area in the conventional supply chain. The research method used to collect data is through focus group discussion. The results from the discussion show that segregation and investment on developing the halal hub are the main issues that were brought up by the respondents. The conclusion that can be drawn from this discussion is that the demand from the final consumers could expand the usage of halal logistics in the future.

Logistics service providers (LSP) are known to implement various forms of management standards, for instance, the quality management (ISO 9000) or environmental management (ISO 14000) standards. The impetuses to implement these certifications are already established. However, research on motivations of Halal logistics management standards (HLS) is lacking. Hence, the purpose of this review chapter is to ascertain the motivations behind the implementation of HLS. Literature representing the concept of Halal certification, Halal logistics, and certification impetuses are reviewed and synthesized to develop the probable motivational factors. Based on the review, this chapter proposes six motivational factors that could drive HLS implementation among LSP. The motivation factors could assist scholars in constructing research instruments for upcoming case or empirical studies. This chapter may well have significant bearing to industrial professionals in gaining more knowledge on the factors that motivate HLS implementation. This chapter is considered an original attempt to review and assemble the motivations of HLS implementation. It also adds to the growing Halal logistics body of literature and accentuates the importance of management standards in LSP operations.

The significant shifts in urbanites’ lifestyles have been the catalyst behind the increased in the consumption of foreign foods and beverages in Malaysia; particularly those made in western nations. Notably, Malaysia’s total import for food had risen significantly from RM26.7 billion in 2009 to RM42.6 billion and RM 45.4 billion, in 2014 and 2015 respectively. These days, urban Malaysian Malays are being inundated with various foreign Halal food products in local markets however, these can also leave them in a rather risky circumstance as the likelihood that some of these foreign food products are not suitable (i.e. Haram) for their consumptions, is relatively high. Halal food issues (namely those foods originated from non-Muslim countries) have created lots of anxieties within the Malaysian Malays’ society. Hence, this study aims to examine factors affecting willingness to accept foreign Halal foods by urban Malaysian Malays. Convenience sampling technique was used to obtain responses from 450 urban Malaysian Malays in designated areas within the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley region. The results demonstrated urban Malaysian Malays willingness to accept foreign Halal foods were significantly affected by trust but displayed no relationships with subjective knowledge and attitude. Also, the insignificant attitude- willingness relationship signified the presence of the attitude-behavior gap. The study’s outcomes may perhaps offer new understandings on urban Malaysian Malay markets particularly for global brand owners and marketers.

The concept of halal logistics or halal supply chain has increasingly received attention following the realisation of tremendously increasing number of Muslim population. Generally, consumers understand the benefits of consuming halal products. But, consumers might not aware that the process of producing halal products does not only encompass manufacturing processes, but also involve all activities throughout the supply chain including handling, storing, warehousing, and transporting activities. As production is becoming more globalised, the supply chain is getting more complex. The complex and lengthy supply chain may expose the halal products to higher risk of contamination. Thus, the objective of this paper is to provide preliminary insights into the concepts of halal logistics and halal supply chain through an understanding of logistics and supply chain processes. This conceptual paper is developed based on a brief review of Shariah, logistics, and supply chain. It also elaborates the development of the concepts and its importance. Having considered that the concept of halal logistics is fairly new to the academia and industry practitioners, this study contributes to the body of knowledge through the concept development of halal logistics and halal supply chain as well as its implementation that could provide guidelines to the industry practitioners.

It has been shown by the previous studies that most incidences of foodborne illnesses worldwide and in Malaysia were largely caused by the poor observance of ethical aspects from the part of those involved in the preparation, processing, handling and production of in food premises, i.e. the food handlers. In the food industry, food handlers play very important roles, as they are the ones who prepare, process and handle food which are eventually consumed by the end-users, i.e. the consumers. Hence, the quality of food prepared, produced, storaged, transported, distributed and served to the end consumers depends very much on the ethics practiced by the food handlers throughout the halal food supply chain. In view of their important role, as well as to safeguard the interest of the public, most government have drawn certain laws, regulations, guidelines and standards that emphasize on the ethical aspects of food handlers. This paper analyses some ethical issues of food handlers in the halal food industry, with special reference to the hygienic and sanitary aspect of food handlers. It further appraises sanitation and hygienic practices and behaviours of food handlers from the halal perspective.

Lean management is an important part of lean thinking where the main focus of lean organization is to minimize wastes. Many organizations on a lean journey fail to apply lean in a holistic manner. Usually, these organizations start by applying tools without proper guidance and leadership that result in the company cannot move to the next level. This study aimed to examine on various factors that may act as a barrier to implement lean management practices in Halal food logistics. This study is based on secondary data and comprises an extensive literature review. Various types of secondary sources of literature were used to evaluate logistics management and supply chain management, Halal supply chain management and lean supply chain management. Based on the literature review, a number of barriers were identified, including uncertainty and stiff competition during the implementation phase, lack of awareness, unwillingness to exchange information, low supplier commitment, high costs and lack of skilled workers. This study can, therefore, serve as a launch pad for further studies in future. Halal is the biggest market in the world and is largely overlooked. This study explores the issues revolving around lean management in relation to this untapped area of research.

Despite its importance, with the major exception of Mentzer and colleagues, the development and measurement of the Logistics Service Quality construct (LSQ) has been relatively under researched. This paper reports the testing and validation of the LSQ instrument (Mentzer, Flint, and Kent 1999) in the context of the third-party logistics industry in the UK. The 3PL setting was considered a logical progression for testing the instrument versus the original in-house logistics service provider. The study is based on a cross sectional mail survey of the customers of third-party logistics service providers.

Outsourcing is widely regarded as a useful approach to lowering costs and gaining competitive advantage. Logistics and transportation were among the most popular areas that used outsourcing during the 1980s and 1990s. Thus, the strategy of employing the third-party logistics (TPL) providers’ services has attracted growing interest. However, studies that involve TPL providers have received considerably less academic attention. This paper presents current logistics outsourcing practices of UK firms as well as the trends from 1990 to 2003 based on a series of surveys by PE Consulting. The study is based on a mail survey of 224 logistics managers from various industries in the UK. It also provides insights into the reasons why some firms do not use the TPL services. The demand for Halal products is increasing tremendously not only from Muslim countries but also non-Muslim countries. The component of Halal industry can be classified into three areas, namely services, food and non-food. Halal logistics is categorized into the service component. Halal logistics covers warehousing, transportation and terminal operations. There are three principles of Halal logistics; avoiding direct contact with haram, addressing the risk of contamination, and perception of the Muslim consumer. For non-Muslim countries, the first two principles apply.Malaysia is regarded as a Muslim majority country; therefore, there is a need to explore the level of awareness on Halal logistics. This research paper aims to explore the level of awareness of the Muslim in the Klang Valley, Selangor. Data were collected through convenient sampling from 250 respondents and analyzed by using SPSS.The findings indicate that religious belief is a significant predictor of Halal logistics awareness among Muslims

Logistics is a backbone for the global supply chains. In Malaysia, logistics are now recognized as strategic industry that positively contribute to gross domestic product (GDP) and performance of logistics is foremost significant. Whereas most of the logistics performance has focused on investigating operational and trade facilitation contexts. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine the issues and reviews by practitioners and found 7 key components that translated it into operations performance objectives. It, thus, provided a base for future research to examine the relationships of this context empirically.

As the business competition is becoming more intense, there has been a great pressure to the logistics service providers to demonstrate its contribution to the organizational performance. Consequently, there has been a tendency of studies focusing at measuring the logistics service performance within various perspectives. This chapter provides a review on several significant studies that measures the performance of logistics services followed by presenting an empirical study on measuring logistics performance as perceived by the customers in the UK context. The empirical results confirms the relationships and consequent effects of LSQ-satisfaction, relationship quality, and customer loyalty-by providing a process model that shows the process of how customers would stay loyal in the logistics outsourcing business relationships by using exit intention as the output variable. The model in this study can greatly assist the logistics outsourcing companies in measuring the performance of their services. It helps the logistics companies understand how their customers measure the quality of their relationship experiences in receiving the logistics services provided by the logistics companies.

Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), including Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) is a statistical tool that is becoming increasingly popular in logistics research. The intent of this paper is to demonstrate the application of CFA in logistics research particularly in testing Mentzer et al. (1999) Logistics Service Quality (LSQ) instrument, a scale developed in the United States. This paper displays the value of CFA for scale development and testing with particular reference to dealing with missing data. The study is based on cross-sectoral mail survey of the customers of Third Party Logistics (TPL) providers in the United Kingdom (UK). With some improvement, it demonstrates the generalizability of LSQ scale across industries in the UK.

In the era of globalization, halalan toyyiban supply chain (HTSC) is a contemporary approach to the global market. This study explores the supply chain process and discloses the practicalities in the production of halal chicken meat. The research focus on storage of the poultry, which covers from farm to customer, in particular the identification of the HTSC critical control points along the process of the supply chain. The research also categorizes the food supply chain process into three phases i.e. pre-slaughtering, slaughtering and post-slaughtering. This study emphasizes on chicken meat, which is two-third of the meat sales in Malaysia and Klang Valley as the case study. Interviews were used in identifying the halal/halalan and toyyib/toyyiban issues, and control points along in storage, which are frequently interrelated. This paper presented a decision support model for VMI system by applying the economic order quantity (EOQ) with fuzzy demand. The model of fuzzy EOQ that has been developed in this study is intended to accommodate the fuzzy demand. Result of the study shows that the optimal quantity of fuzzy EOQ is influenced by the value of D1and D2. It was known that the value of order quantity (q) will be increased if the decision-makers getting more optimistic regarding the upper limit of the sales forecast implementation. The model formulation that has been introduced fuzzy number for demand to accommodate uncertainty situation.

This paper is to highlight on the awareness of green supply chain in Malaysia. Awareness and readiness of the Malaysian logistics players to practice green activities are very important to ensure sustainability in environmental management. The specific aims of this paper are to: (i) review the extent literature on green logistics and green supply chain and (ii) to identify the readiness of Malaysia logistics industry towards implementing green logistics and green supply chain. Statistical software, SPSS has been used to analyse the data from the constructed questionnaire. The findings will be particularly important in developing environmental readiness for logistics industry.
