This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of the screen media time of young children on the relationship between mothers’ reasons for allowing young children to use screen media and their children’s ability to regulate screen media. The participants consisted of 614 children aged 5-6 (312 boys and 302 girls), and all the survey questions were answered by their mothers. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping analysis were employed to analyze the data using SPSS 25.0 and Mplus 8.6. The results were as follows. First, mothers’ educational and ritualized reasons for allowing young children to use screen media and children’s screen media time directly affected young children’s ability to regulate screen media. Second, children’s screen media time mediated the relationship between mothers’ educational and ritualized reasons for allowing their children to use screen media and children’s ability to regulate screen media. When mothers permitted their children to use screen media for educational purposes, their children were likely to spend less time on screen media usage which, in turn, increased their ability to regulate screen media. Conversely, the more mothers allowed their children to use screen media for ceremonial purposes, the more time their children spent on screen media and the less ability they had to regulate screen media usage. These outcomes suggest that, to improve children’s screen media regulation ability, mothers must not routinely allow their children to use screen media and should manage their children’s screen media time.

For homeland security, radiation portal monitors (RPMs) have been widely used to detect illegal radioactive materials at seaports, airports, nuclear facilities and other highly secured establishments. In general, commercial RPMs are based on a large plastic (i.e. PVT-polyvinyl toluene) scintillator detector and the associated electronics. In order to detect radioactive materials passing through the RPM, the alarm criterion should be set according to the background level, which depends on the operating location due to not only composition differences in soil and rocks but also weather variation (i.e. rainfall and temperature). It is well known that RPM background signal level increases with rainfall and that the PVT signal depends on the temperature due to scintillation light yield variation. In this study, the background signal level of two commercial RPMs (models: 4525-3800 and 7000, Ludlum), both of which are installed and operated at the Incheon and Donghae ports in Korea, was analysed by reference to a 3-year database of minute-to-minute RPM background signals and a rainfall-and-temperature database provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). In terms of rainfall, the variation of the background signal level was examined with reference to the amount of rainfall. The averaged variation in the background signal level, which was as high as ~20% as a function of the amount of rainfall, was found to be dependent on a region’s specific concentration of 222Rn in the atmosphere. In terms of temperature, the background signal level varied by ~4.7% within the temperature range of −5 to 30°C for the four studied sites (i.e. two sites per region for the Incheon and Donghae regions). Knowledge of the dependency of RPM background signal level on rainfall amount and temperature could be used to achieve more realistic estimation of the background radiation level for optimising commercial RPMs’ alarm criteria.

Background: Human coronaviruses (HCoV) cause mild upper respiratory infections; however, in 2019, a novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged, causing an acute respiratory disease pandemic. Coronaviruses exhibit marked epidemiological and clinical differences.Purpose: This study compared the clinical, laboratory, and radiographic findings of children infected with SARS-CoV-2 versus HCoV.Methods: SARS-CoV-2 data were obtained from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) registry and 4 dedicated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitals. Medical records of children admitted with a single HCoV infection from January 2015 to March 2020 were collected from 10 secondary/tertiary hospitals. Clinical data included age, sex, underlying disease, symptoms, test results, imaging findings, treatment, and length of hospital stay.Results: We compared the clinical characteristics of children infected with HCoV (n=475) to those of children infected with SARS-CoV-2 (272 from KDCA, 218 from COVID-19 hospitals). The construction of the Korea’s 1st deep underground laboratory, called Yemilab, dedicated to science was completed in September, 2022 in Handuk iron mine, Jeongseon-gun. The Yemilab construction includes excavation of a large cylindrical cavern (Diameter: 20 m, Height: 20 m) to host a future neutrino detector to be filled with 2,260 ton liquid scintillator. In this article, we discuss that several interesting physics researches can be carried out with the large neutrino detector, a.k.a. LSC, and some world-leading results could be achieved.

Purpose Previous reports showed that some probiotics provide beneficial effects on various diseases including metabolic disorders. This study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effects of Lactiplantibacillus (L.) plantarum SKO-001 (SKO-001), a probiotic strain newly isolated from Angelica gigas. Methods C57BL/6J mice were fed with high-fat diet (HFD, 60% fat) for four weeks, and then different doses of SKO-001 (n = 10 each group) were orally given for 12 weeks. Following treatment, body weight, fat weight, serum parameters and adipose and liver tissues were analyzed. Results SKO-001 (2 × 1010 CFU/day, per os) reduced body weight gain after 10th week of administration, accompanied by a reduction in body fat mass of mice. In the SKO-001-fed group, increased serum adiponectin, decreased leptin, insulin, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, free fatty acids, and triglyceride levels were observed. Hematoxylin and eosin staining of various fat depots showed that increased adipocyte size caused by HFD intake was markedly reduced and correlated with reduced mRNA levels of lipogenesis genes, including sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha, and increased uncoupling protein 1 levels. Similarly, SKO-001 reduced lipid accumulation, decreased the mRNA levels of lipogenic genes, and reduced α-smooth muscle actin and collagen type 1 alpha 1 levels in the liver. Conclusions SKO-001 ameliorates obesity and related metabolic abnormalities in adipose and liver tissues, possibly via the regulation of lipid metabolism. Based on the results of the present study, SKO-001 may be applicable as an anti-obesity therapeutic or functional food.

Although face masks have been used for over a century to provide protection against airborne pathogens and pollutants, close scrutiny of their effectiveness has peaked in the past two years in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The simplicity of face masks belies the complexity of the physical phenomena that determine their effectiveness as a defense against airborne infections. This complexity is rooted in the fact that the effectiveness of face masks depends on the combined effects of respiratory aerodynamics, filtration flow physics, droplet dynamics and their interactions with porous materials, structural dynamics, physiology, and even human behavior. At its core, however, the face mask is a flow-handling device, and in the current review, we take a flow physics–centric view of face masks and the key phenomena that underlie their function. We summarize the state of the art in experimental measurements, as well as the growing body of computational studies that have contributed to our understanding of the factors that determine the effectiveness of face masks. The review also lays out some of the important open questions and technical challenges associated with the effectiveness of face masks.

Water beads are dangerous foreign bodies causing intestinal obstruction in young children because the beads absorb water and are radiolucent. Although the features lead to progressive intestinal obstruction, it is difficult to diagnose ingestion of the beads by imaging studies. For the diagnosis, ultrasonography is safe, fast, and accurate. The imaging modality can show intestinal water beads as spherical, anechoic, smoothly demarcated cysts. This characteristic finding may be more useful in rapid and accurate diagnosis than computed tomography scan. We report a case of an 8-month-old boy who obtained a timely sonographic diagnosis of water bead-induced small bowel obstruction in the emergency department.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to verify the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS-K) for nursing students.Methods: Data from 235 participants were collected from April 12 to April 26, 2022. A total of 230 participants’ data were analyzed. The data were analyzed for content, discriminant, known-groups, and construct validity using content validity index, correlation coefficient, and confirmatory factor analyses. The reliability of the GAAIS-K was examined using internal consistency and test-retest analyses.Results: The expert-rated content validity index was ≥.80. The sub-scales of the GAAIS-K were moderately correlated with attitude toward accepting technology, indicative of its discriminant validity. The male students’ positive attitude score was significantly higher than that of the female students, satisfying the known-groups validity. Cronbach’s α for the scale was .86 (positive) and .74 (negative), and the intra-class correlation coefficient for the two-week test-retest reliability was .86 (positive) and .60 (negative). The scores for positive and negative attitudes were 3.68±0.46 and 3.05±0.55.Conclusion: This study shows that the GAAIS-K is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing nursing students. Additional research is recommended to continue the evaluation of the GAAIS-K with a focus on healthcare settings.

Cholangiocarcinoma frequently recurs even after curative resection. Expression levels of proteins such as epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Snail, epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) examined by immunohistochemistry have been studied as potential prognostic factors for cholangiocarcinoma. The aim of this study was to investigate significant factors affecting the prognosis of resectable cholangiocarcinoma.Ninety-one patients who underwent surgical resection at Samsung Medical Center for cholangiocarcinoma from 1995 to 2013 were included in this study. Expression levels of E-cadherin, Snail, IL-6, membranous EGFR, and cytoplasmic EGFR were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarray blocks made from surgical specimens.Patients with high levels of membranous EGFR in tissue microarrays had significantly shorter overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS): high membranous EGFR (score 0-2) 38.0 months versus low membranous EGFR (score 3) 14.4 months (p=0.008) and high membranous EGFR (score 0-2) 23.2 months versus low membranous EGFR (score 3) 6.1 months (p=0.004), respectively. On the other hand, E-cadherin, Snail, cytoplasmic EGFR, and IL-6 did not show significant association with OS or DFS. Patients with distant metastasis had significantly higher IL-6 levels than those with locoregional recurrence (p=0.01).This study showed that overexpression of membranous EGFR was significantly associated with shorter OS and DFS in surgically resected bile duct cancer patients. In addition, higher IL-6 expression was a predictive marker for recurrence in cholangiocarcinoma patients with distant organ metastasis after surgical resection.

Potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is a destructive disease in Korea. To elucidate the genomic variation of the mitochondrial (mt) genome, we assembled its complete mt genome and compared its sequence among different haplotypes. The mt genome sequences of four Korean P. infestans isolates were revealed by Illumina HiSeq. The size of the circular mt genome of the four major genotypes, KR_1_A1, KR_2_A2, SIB-1, and US-11, was 39,872, 39,836, 39,872, and 39,840 bp, respectively. All genotypes contained the same 61 genes in the same order, comprising two RNA-encoding genes, 16 ribosomal genes, 25 transfer RNA, 17 genes encoding electron transport and ATP synthesis, 11 open reading frames of unknown function, and one protein import-related gene, tatC. The coding region comprised 91% of the genome, and GC content was 22.3%. The haplotypes were further analyzed based on sequence polymorphism at two hypervariable regions (HVRi), carrying a 2 kb insertion/deletion sequence, and HVRii, carrying 36 bp variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs). All four genotypes carried the 2 kb insertion/deletion sequence in HVRi, whereas HVRii had two VNTRs in KR_1_A1 and SIB-1 but three VNTRs in US-11 and KR_2_A2. Minimal spanning network and phylogenetic analysis based on 5,814 bp of mtDNA sequences from five loci, KR_1_A1 and SIB-1 were classified as IIa-6 haplotype, and isolates KR_1_A2 and US-11 as haplotypes IIa-5 and IIb-2, respectively. mtDNA sequences of KR_1_A1 and SIB-1 shared 100% sequence identity, and both were 99.9% similar to those of KR_2_A2 and US-11.

The aim of this study was to assess human health risks of exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) by ingestion of water from the Hyeongsan River in Pohang. Ingestion primarily acquired PFBS, PFNA, PFOS, and PFOA, but PFAAs rather than its precursors. Human exposure to PFASs was affected by the physicochemical properties of compounds, the emission sources, and the flow rate. The upstream and midstream waters were influenced by PFCAs due to the domestic sewage, whereas the downstream water contained high levels of PFBS and PFOS due to the presence of an industrial complex. Exposure levels decreased in the midstream; this result suggests a dilution effect due to the increasing flow rate. Exposure levels to PFBS were high exposure because they have a low octanol–water partition coefficient and high aqueous solubility. PFOS at the industrial complex exceeded the WHO allowable level; this result suggests that ingestion may cause non-carcinogenic toxicity. To our knowledge, this is the first assessment of the risk of PFAS ingestion in Pohang. The result will provide a useful reference for future regulations and policies to manage PFAS sources, purify river water, and prevent human exposure.

For potent and effective dosing in elderly patients, a parenteral prolonged delivery system is favored, with improved medication adherence with reduced dosage frequency.Purpose: This study aimed to design a nanocrystalline suspension (NS)-based MTK prolonged delivery system and evaluate its pharmacokinetics profile and local tolerability following subcutaneous administration.Methods: To decelerate the dissolution rate, the amorphous MTK raw material was transformed into a crystalline state using a solvent-mediated transformation method and subsequently formulated into NS using a bead-milling technique. The MTK NSs were characterized by morphology, particle size, crystallinity, and in vitro dissolution profiles. The pharmacokinetic profile and local tolerability at the injection site following subcutaneous injection of MTK suspension were evaluated in rats.Results: Microscopic and physical characterization revealed that the amorphous MTK powder was lucratively transformed into a crystalline form in acidic media (pH 4). MTK crystalline suspensions with different diameters (200 nm, 500 nm, and 3 μm) were uniformly prepared using bead-milling technology, employing polysorbate 80 as suspending agent. Prepared crystalline suspensions exhibited analogous crystallinity (melting point, 150°C) and size-dependent in vitro dissolution profiles. MTK NSs with particle sizes of 200 nm and 500 nm provided a protracted pharmacokinetic profile for up to 4 weeks in rats, with a higher maximum drug concentration in plasma than the 3 μm-sized injectable suspensions. Histopathological examination revealed that MTK NS caused chronic granulomatous inflammation at the injection site, which resolved after 4 weeks.Conclusion: The MTK parenteral NS delivery system is expected to be a valuable tool for treating Alzheimer’s disease with extended dose intervals.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: montelukast, parenteral prolonged release delivery, crystallinity, nanocrystalline suspension, bead-milling, pharmacokinetics, local tolerability

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of face-to-face education and non-face-to-face education of beauty workers on learning satisfaction. For the investigation of this study, 400 beauty workers nationwide who have received face-to-face education and non-faceto- face education were targeted. Previous studies that studied the satisfaction of face-to-face education and non-face-to-face education were referenced, and a total of 400 copies were distributed for three months from November 01, 2021 to January 31, 2022 and 273 copies were used as survey data. For data analysis, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and T-test were conducted through the SPSS 25.0 program. As a result of analyzing the effect of face-to-face education and non-face-to-face education of beauty workers on learning satisfaction, learning commitment and interaction with students showed a positive (+) effect on learning satisfaction. It is believed that it will be very effective for learning satisfaction by using smart mixed training courses in NCS training or blended learning education that mixes face-to-face and non-face-to-face education as basic data for learning training methods.

Purpose: DA-8010 is a novel muscarinic M3 receptor antagonist with significant selectivity for bladder over salivary gland in preclinical studies. We evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of DA-8010 in overactive bladder (OAB) patients.Methods: This phase 2, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, active reference- and placebo-controlled trial was conducted at 12 centers in South Korea (NCT03566134). Patients aged ≥19 years with OAB symptoms for ≥3 months were enrolled. Three hundred six patients (30.07% male) were randomized to 12 weeks of treatment among 4 groups; 2 experimental groups (DA-8010 2.5 or 5 mg), an active reference group (solifenacin 5 mg), and a placebo group. The change from the baseline of (=∆) 24-hour frequency at 12 weeks (primary endpoint), episodes of urgency, overall/urgency urinary incontinence, average/ maximum voided volume, nocturia, and patients’ subjective responses were analyzed.Results: In the full analysis set, the mean (standard deviation) [median] values for ∆ 24-hour frequency at 12 weeks were -1.01 (2.44) [-1.33] for placebo, -1.22 (2.05) [-1.33] for DA-8010 2.5 mg, and -1.67 (2.25) [-1.67] for DA-8010 5 mg; DA-8010 5 mg showed a significant decrease compared with placebo (P=0.0413). At 4 and 8 weeks, both DA-8010 2.5 mg (P=0.0391 at 4 weeks, P=0.0335 at 8 weeks) and DA-8010 5 mg (P=0.0001 at 4 weeks, P=0.0210 at 8 weeks) showed significant decrease in ∆ 24-hour frequency compared with placebo. DA-8010 5 mg achieved a significant decrease in ∆ number of urgency episodes, compared with placebo at 4 (P=0.0278) and 8 (P=0.0092) weeks. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were observed in 3.95% of placebo, 6.67% of DA-8010 2.5 mg, 18.42% of DA-8010 5 mg, and 17.33% of solifenacin 5 mg groups. No serious ADRs were observed in any patient.Conclusions: Both DA-8010 2.5 mg and 5 mg showed therapeutic efficacy for OAB without serious ADRs. Therefore, both dosages of DA-8010 can advance to a subsequent large-scale phase 3 trial.

The goal of this study was to evaluate human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the air near the Hyeongsan River in Pohang, and to quantify associated health risks. The daily intake of PFOS was the highest, and those of PFBS, PFHxA, PFUnDA, and PFOA were also high. Humans were exposed more to ionic PFASs than to neutral PFASs. The exposure level of PFASs increased from upstream to downstream; this trend suggests that emission sources exist downstream. For the gaseous phase, the exposure level was highest to PFBS, which have the shortest carbon-chain length, whereas for the particulate phase, exposure was highest to PFOS. The exposure and distribution of PFAS congeners differed among sites and phases, which means that humans are exposed differently depending on the PFASs emitted from the emission source at each site, and on the physicochemical properties of PFASs. Inhalation exposure to PFASs was below the PFAS intake safety threshold, and the toxicity was also lower than the level allowed by WHO. However, health risks from long-term exposure to PFASs are of concern, and combining exposure by various routes may have a significant health effect. Therefore, continuous monitoring and risk assessment are required.

Transcatheter aortic valves (TAVs) are susceptible to leaflet thrombosis which may lead to thromboembolic events, and early detection and intervention are believed to be the key to avoiding such adverse outcomes. An embedded sensor system installed on the valve stent, coupled with an appropriate machine learning-based continuous monitoring algorithm can facilitate early detection to predict severity of reduced leaflet motion (RLM) and avoid adverse outcomes.We present a data-driven, in silico, proof-of-concept analysis of a pressure microsensor based system for quantifying RLM in TAVs. We generate a dataset of 21 high-fidelity transvalvular flow simulations with healthy and mildly stenotic TAVs to train a logistic regression model to correlate individual leaflet mobility in each simulation with principal components of corresponding hemodynamic pressure recorded at strategic locations of the TAV stent. A separate test dataset of 7 simulations is also generated for prospective assessment of model performance.An array of 6 sensors embedded on the TAV stent, with two sensors tracking individual leaflet, successfully correlates leaflet mobility with recorded pressure. The sensors are placed along leaflet centerlines, one in the sinus, and the other at the sino-tubular junction. The regression model is tuned using cross-validation to achieve high accuracy on both training (RDiscrete blood pressure recordings on TAV stents can be successfully correlated with individual leaflet mobility. Further development of this technology can enable longitudinal monitoring of TAVs and early detection of valve failure.

Interleukin-7 is a cytokine with well-established roles in lymphocyte development and more recently, an expanded role in immune function. IL-7Rα is highly expressed by innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), but how IL-7 directs the development or function of ILCs is not well studied. Using mice with inducible deletion of IL-7Rα, we showed that loss of IL-7 signaling led to impaired production of IL-5, IL-13 and amphiregulin in lung ST2+ group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) following influenza/A infection. Conversely, mice treated with IL-7 increased production of IL-5 and IL-13 by lung ILC2s. Moreover, we showed that IL-7 enhanced GATA3 and CD25 expression in ILC2s and loss of IL-7 signaling led to their reduced expression. Altogether, this study demonstrates that IL-7 regulates the function of ILC2s during airway viral infection and induces GATA3 and CD25 expression.

Today, the number of technology users is rapidly increasing due to the development of science and technology and the popularization of smartphone use. Users build their social networks online by sharing and connecting their lives and interests with others through platforms provided by social media. In the beauty industry, various social mediamarketing activities are also increasing. Therefore, this study aims to analyze beauty management behavior according to the motivation for use among college students who have the most access to and use of social media. The method of study was conducted for college students attending a four-year university located in Jeonnam, and 382 copies of the questionnaire were independently answered by them to be analyzed and used in this study. The summarized results of the study areas follows. Looking at the correlation between social media usage motivation and beauty management behavior, skin management behavior of beauty management behavior was positively related in the order of functional, social, and self-expression motivation. It was found that the higher the functional motivation of social media, the higher the level of skin care behavior. Upon investigating the influence of college students’social media usage motivation on beauty management behavior, it was found that onlythe functional motivation of social media usage motivation has a significant effect on skin management behavior. Amultiple regression analysis to investigate the effect of social media usage motivation on body shape management behavior revealed that self-expression motivation and social motivation of social media usage motivation had significant effects on body shape management behavior. Therefore, this study is expected to provide basic data for the research of university students that can lead the beauty industry. It is expected that the beauty industry can provide information related to beauty product sales and beauty information contents using social media targeting the students.

Humans are commonly exposed to ionizing radiation. The conventional approach for estimating radiation exposure is to integrate physical and clinical measurements for optimizing the dose calculation. However, these methods have several limitations. The present study attempted to identify candidate microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers for radiation exposure in a hematopoietic humanized NSGS (hu-NSGS) mouse model.We grafted human CD34The expression of 45 miRNAs was upregulated/downregulated hu-NSGS mice. The miRNAs hsa-mir-188-5p, hsa-let-7a-5p, hsa-mir-612, hsa-mir-671-5p, and hsa-mir-675-5p were highly radiation-responsive in irradiated hu-NSGS mice. When compared with control mice, radiation-exposed mice exhibited significant upregulated of hsa-let-7a-5p expression and significant downregulation of hsa-mir-188-5p expression.Single miRNAs or combinations of hsa-mir-188-5p, hsa-let-7a-5p, hsa-mir-675-5p, hsa-mir-612, and hsa-mir-671-5p can be used as biomarkers for predicting the impact of radiation exposure. The current findings suggest the usefulness of hu-NSGS models for investigating radiation biomarkers.

A new series of 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl thiazole pyrimidines has been synthesized and biologically evaluated for its in vitro anticancer activity. Compounds 4a, 4b, and 4h with substituted piperazine showed the best antiproliferative activity. In the NCI-60 cell line screening, compound 4b showed promising cytostatic activity against multiple cell lines. Notably, it elicited a GI value of 86.28% against the NSCL cancer cell line HOP-92 at a 10 μM dose. Compounds 4a and 4h at 10 μM showed promising GI values of 40.87% and 46.14% against HCT-116 colorectal carcinoma and SK-BR-3 breast cancer cell lines, respectively. ADME-Tox prediction of compounds 4a, 4b, and 4h revealed their acceptable drug-likeness properties. In addition, compounds 4a, 4b, and 4h showed a high probability of targeting kinase receptors via Molinspiration and Swiss TargetPrediction.

Stress-induced depression and anxiety (DA) are closely connected to gastrointestinal inflammation and dysbiosis, which can suppress brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain. Herein, we isolated the BDNF expression-inducing probiotics Lactobacillus casei HY2782 and Bifidobacterium lactis HY8002 in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells. Then, we investigated the effects of HY2782, HY8002, anti-inflammatory L-theanine, and their supplement (PfS, probiotics-fermented L-theanine-containing supplement) on DA in mice exposed to restraint stress (RS) or the fecal microbiota of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and depression (FMd). Oral administration of HY2782, HY8002, or L-theanine alleviated RS-induced DA-like behaviors. They also decreased RS-induced hippocampal interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels, as well as NF-κB-positive cell numbers, blood corticosterone level, and colonic IL-1β and IL-6 levels and NF-κB-positive cell numbers. L-theanine more potently suppressed DA-like behaviors and inflammation-related marker levels than probiotics. However, these probiotics more potently increased RS-suppressed hippocampal BDNF level and BDNF+NeuN+ cell numbers than L-theanine. Furthermore, HY2782 and HY8002 suppressed RS-increased Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia populations in gut microbiota. In particular, they increased Lachnospiraceae and Lactobacillacease populations, which are closely positively associated with hippocampal BDNF expression, and suppressed Sutterellaceae, Helicobacteriaceae, Akkermansiaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae populations, which are closely positively associated with hippocampal IL-1β expression. HY2782 and HY8002 potently alleviated FMd-induced DA-like behaviors and increased FMd-suppressed BDNF, serotonin levels, and BDNF-positive neuronal cell numbers in the brain. They alleviated blood corticosterone level and colonic IL-1β α and IL-6 levels. However, L-theanine weakly, but not significantly, alleviated FMd-induced DA-like behaviors and gut inflammation. BDNF expression-inducing probiotic (HY2782, HY8002, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus)-fermented and anti-inflammatory L-theanine-containing supplement PfS alleviated DA-like behaviors, inflammation-related biomarker levels, and gut dysbiosis more than probiotics or L-theanine. Based on these findings, a combination of BDNF expression-inducing probiotics with anti-inflammatory L-theanine may additively or synergistically alleviate DA and gut dysbiosis by regulating gut microbiota-mediated inflammation and BDNF expression, thereby being beneficial for DA.
