Electronic nematicity is often found in unconventional superconductors, suggesting its relevance for electronic pairing. In the strongly hole-doped iron-based superconductors, the symmetry channel and strength of the nematic fluctuations, as well as the possible presence of long-range nematic order, remain controversial. Here, we address these questions using transport measurements under elastic strain. By decomposing the strain response into the appropriate symmetry channels, we demonstrate the emergence of a giant in-plane symmetric contribution, associated with the growth of both strong electronic correlations and the sensitivity of these correlations to strain. We find weakened remnants of the nematic fluctuations that are present at optimal doping, but no change in the symmetry channel of nematic fluctuations with hole doping. Furthermore, we find no evidence for a nematic-ordered state in the AFe$_2$As$_2$(A = K, Rb, Cs) superconductors. These results revise the current understanding of nematicity in hole-doped iron-based superconductors.

The observed phonon energies and scattering intensities across the Brillouin zone are in excellent agreement with ab initio lattice dynamical calculations based on nonmagnetic density-functional-perturbation theory. Our results do not evidence any renormalization of the phonons at finite momentum across the magnetic transition of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The only anomalous behavior was detected for the in-plane polarized longitudinal-acoustic phonon branch in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which anomalously softens towards low temperatures and might be related to anisotropic negative thermal expansion in this compound. The interplay of electronic correlations, multi-orbital excitations, and spin-orbit coupling is a fertile ground for new states of matter in quantum materials. Here, we report on a polarized Raman scattering study of semimetallic SrIrO3. The momentum-space selectivity of Raman scattering allows to circumvent the challenge to resolve the dynamics of charges with very different mobilities. The Raman responses of both holes and electrons display an electronic continuum extending far beyond the energies allowed in a regular Fermi liquid. Analyzing this response within a memory function formalism, we extract their frequency dependent scattering rate and mass enhancement, from which we determine their DC-mobilities and electrical resistivities that agree well with transport measurement. We demonstrate that its charge dynamics is well described by a marginal Fermi liquid phenomenology, with a scattering rate close to the Planckian limit. This demonstrates the potential of this approach to investigate the charge dynamics in multi-band systems., It remains challenging to resolve the dynamics of charges with different mobilities in multi-band systems. Here, the authors report a Raman scattering study of the dynamics of holes and electrons in semimetallic SrIrO3, which is well described by a marginal Fermi liquid phenomenology, with frequency dependent scattering rates close to the Planckian limit.

We study the elastoresistance of the highly correlated material CsFe2As2 in all symmetry channels. Neutralizing its thermal expansion by means of a piezoelectric-based strain cell is demonstrated to be essential. The elastoresistance response in the in-plane symmetric channel is found to be large, while the response in the symmetry-breaking channels is weaker and provides no evidence for a divergent nematic susceptibility. Rather, our results can be interpreted naturally within the framework of a coherence-incoherence crossover, where the low-temperature coherent state is sensitively tuned by the in-plane atomic distances.

Since their theoretical prediction by Peierls in the 1930s, charge density waves (CDWs have been one of the most commonly encountered electronic phases in low-dimensional metallic systems. The instability mechanism originally proposed combines Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling but is, strictly speaking, only valid in one dimension. In higher dimensions, its relevance is questionable as sharp maxima in the static electronic susceptibility χ(q) are smeared out, and is, in many cases, unable to account for the periodicity of the observed charge modulations. Here, we investigate the quasi-two-dimensional LaAgSb2, which exhibits two CDW transitions, by a combination of diffuse x-ray scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering, and ab initio calculations. We demonstrate that the CDW formation is driven by phonon softening. The corresponding Kohn anomalies are visualized in three dimensions through the momentum distribution of the x-ray diffuse scattering intensity. We show that they can be quantitatively accounted for by considering the electronic susceptibility calculated from a Dirac-like band, weighted by anisotropic electron-phonon coupling. This remarkable agreement sheds new light on the importance of Fermi surface nesting in CDW formation.

Magnetic materials with a non-collinear and non-coplanar arrangement of magnetic moments hosting a nonzero scalar spin-chirality exhibit unique magnetic and spin-dependent electronic transport properties. The spin chirality often occurs in materials where competing exchange interactions lead to geometrical frustrations between magnetic moments and to a strong coupling between the crystal lattice and the magnetic structure. These characteristics are particularly strong in Mn-based antiperovskites where the interactions and chirality can be tuned by substitutional modifications of the crystalline lattice. This study presents evidence for the formation of two unequal chiral spin states in magnetically ordered Mn3.338Ni0.651N antiperovskite based on density functional theory calculations and supported by magnetization measurements after cooling in a magnetic field. The existence of two scalar spin-chiralities of opposite sign and different magnitude is demonstrated by a vertical shift of the magnetic-field dependent magnetization and Hall effect at low fields and from an asymmetrical magnetoresistivity when the applied magnetic field is oriented parallel or antiparallel to the direction of the cooling field. This opens up the possibility of manipulating the spin chirality for potential use in the emerging field of chiral spintronics.

We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering data investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW) soft phonon mode upon entering the superconducting state in $2H$-NbSe$_2$. Measurements were done close to the CDW ordering wavevector $\mathbf{q}_{CDW}$ at $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{q}_{CDW}+(0,0,l)$,$0.15\leq l \leq 0.5$, for $T=10\,\rm{K}$ (CDW order) and $3.8\,\rm{K}$ (CDW order + superconductivity). We observe changes of the phonon lineshape that are characteristic for systems with strong electron-phonon coupling in the presence of a superconducting energy gap $2\Delta_c$ and from which we can demonstrate an $l$-dependence of the superconducting gap. Reversely, our data imply that the CDW energy gap is strongly localized along the $c^*$ direction. The confinement of the CDW gap to a very small momentum region explains the rather low competition and easy coexistence of CDW order and superconductivity in $2H$-NbSe$_2$. However, the energy gained by opening $\Delta_{CDW}$ seems to be too small to be the driving force of the phase transition at $T_{CDW}=33\,\rm{K}$ , which is better described as an electron-phonon coupling driven structural phase transition.

We present a comprehensive study of the low-temperature heat capacity and thermal expansion of single crystals of the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 series (0, Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. B

We study \textit{ab initio} a pyrochlore compound, CsW$_{2}$O$_{6}$, which exhibits a yet unexplained metal-insulator transition. We find that (1) the reported low-$T$ structure is likely inaccurate and the correct structure has a twice larger cell; (2) the insulating phase is not of a Mott or dimer-singlet nature, but a rare example of a 3D Peierls transition, with a simultaneous condensation of three density waves; (3) spin-orbit interaction plays a crucial role, forming well-nested bands. The high-$T$ (HT) phase, if stabilized, could harbor a unique $e_{g}+ie_{g}$ superconducting state that breaks the time reversal symmetry, but is not chiral. This state was predicted in 1999, but never observed. We speculate about possible ways to stabilize the HT phase while keeping the conditions for superconductivity.

The interactions of electronic, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in solids result in complex phase diagrams, new emergent phenomena and technical applications. While electron–phonon coupling is well understood, and interactions between spin and electronic excitations are intensely investigated, only little is known about the dynamic interactions between spin and lattice excitations. Noncentrosymmetric FeSi is known to undergo with increasing temperature a crossover from insulating to metallic behaviour with concomitant magnetic fluctuations, and exhibits strongly temperature-dependent phonon energies. Here we show by detailed inelastic neutron-scattering measurements and ab initio calculations that the phonon renormalization in FeSi is linked to its unconventional magnetic properties. Electronic states mediating conventional electron–phonon coupling are only activated in the presence of strong magnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, phonons entailing strongly varying Fe–Fe distances are damped via dynamic coupling to the temperature-induced magnetic moments, highlighting FeSi as a material with direct spin–phonon coupling and multiple interaction paths., Whilst emergent phenomena and potential technological applications in materials may rely of the coupling between spin, lattice, and electronic degrees of freedom, little is known about direct coupling mechanism between spins and phonons. Here, the authors evidence such behaviour in noncentrosymmetrc FeSi.

We present a study of the lattice dynamical properties of superconducting SrPt$_3$P ($T_c = 8.4$ K) via high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) and ab initio calculations. Density functional perturbation theory including spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in enhanced electron-phonon coupling (EPC) for the optic phonon modes originating from the Pt(I) atoms, with energies $\sim 5$ meV, resulting in a large EPC constant $\lambda \sim 2$. An overall softening of the IXS powder spectra occurs from room to low temperatures, consistent with the predicted strong EPC and with recent specific-heat experiments ($2\Delta_0 / k_{\mathrm{B}}T_c \sim 5$). The low-lying phonon modes observed in the experiments are approximately 1.5 meV harder than the corresponding calculated phonon branch. Moreover, we do not find any changes in the spectra upon entering the superconducting phase. We conclude that current theoretical calculations underestimate the energy of the lowest band of phonon modes indicating that the coupling of these modes to the electronic subsystem is overestimated., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the soft phonon mode in the charge-density-wave system TbTe$_3$. We analyze our data based on lattice dynamical calculations using density-functional-perturbation-theory and find clear evidence that strongly momentum dependent electron-phonon-coupling defines the periodicity of the CDW superstructure: Our experiment reveals strong phonon softening and increased phonon line widths over a large part in reciprocal space adjacent to the CDW ordering vector $q_{CDW} = (0, 0, 0.3)$. Further, $q_{CDW}$ is clearly offset from the wave vector of (weak) Fermi surface nesting $q_{FS} = (0, 0, 0.25)$ and our detailed analysis indicates that electron-phonon-coupling is responsible for this shift. Hence, we can add TbTe$_3$, which was previously considered as a canonical CDW compound following the Peierls scenario, to the list of distinct charge-density-wave materials characterized by momentum dependent electron-phonon coupling.

The ferropnictide superconductors exhibit a sensitive interplay between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom, including a number of phonon modes that are much softer than predicted by nonmagnetic calculations using density functional theory (DFT). However, it is not known what effect, if any, the long-range magnetic order has on phonon frequencies above 23 meV, where several phonon branches are very closely spaced in energy and it is challenging to isolate them from each other. We measured these phonons using inelastic time-of-flight neutron scattering in ~40 Brillouin zones, and developed a technique to determine their frequencies. We find this method capable of determining phonon energies to ~0.1 meV accuracy, and that the DFT calculations using the experimental structure yield qualitatively correct energies and eigenvectors. We do not find any effect of the magnetic transition on these phonons., To be published in Physical Review B

We present a combined density-functional-perturbation-theory and inelastic neutron scattering study of the lattice dynamical properties of YNi2B2C. In general, very good agreement was found between theory and experiment for both phonon energies and line widths. Our analysis reveals that the strong coupling of certain low energy modes is linked to the presence of large displacements of the light atoms, i.e. B and C, which is unusual in view of the rather low phonon energies. Specific modes exhibiting a strong coupling to the electronic quasiparticles were investigated as a function of temperature. Their energies and line widths showed marked changes on cooling from room temperature to just above the superconducting transition at Tc = 15.2 K. Calculations simulating the effects of temperature allow to model the observed temperature dependence qualitatively.

We present an investigation of the lattice dynamics of the charge-density-wave compound 2H-NbSe2. We analyze the precise nature of the wave vector dependent electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and derive the bare dispersion of the charge-density-wave (CDW) soft phonon mode using inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab-initio calculations. The electron-phonon interaction is a major factor influencing the competition between collective instabilities in correlated-electron materials, but its role in driving high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates remains poorly understood. We have used high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to monitor low-energy phonons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ (superconducting $\bf T_c = 61$ K), which is close to a charge density wave (CDW) instability. Phonons in a narrow range of momentum space around the CDW ordering vector exhibit extremely large superconductivity-induced lineshape renormalizations. These results imply that the electron-phonon interaction has sufficient strength to generate various anomalies in electronic spectra, but does not contribute significantly to Cooper pairing. In addition, a quasi-elastic "central peak" due to CDW nanodomains is observed in a wide temperature range above and below $\bf T_c$, suggesting that the gradual onset of a spatially inhomogeneous CDW domain state with decreasing temperature is a generic feature of the underdoped cuprates.

KFe2As2 single crystals are studied using specific-heat, high-resolution thermal-expansion, magnetization, and magnetostriction measurements. The magnetization and magnetostriction data provide clear evidence for strong Pauli limiting effects for magnetic fields parallel to the FeAs planes, suggesting that KFe2As2 may be a good candidate to search for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Using standard thermodynamic relations, the uniaxial pressure derivatives of the critical temperature ($T_{c}$), the normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient ($\gamma_{n}$), the normal-state susceptibility ($\chi$), and the thermodynamic critical field ($H_{c}$) are calculated from our data. We find that the close relationship between doping and pressure as found in other Fe-based systems does not hold for KFe2As2.

We report an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of phonons with energies up to 159 meV in the conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. Using the SWEEP mode, a newly developed time-of-flight technique involving the continuous rotation of a single crystal specimen, allowed us to measure a four dimensional volume in (Q,E) space and, thus, determine the dispersion surface and linewidths of the $A_{1g}$ (~ 102 meV) and $A_u$ (~ 159 meV) type phonon modes for the whole Brillouin zone. Despite of having linewidths of $\Gamma = 10 meV$, $A_{1g}$ modes do not strongly contribute to the total electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$. However, experimental linewidths show a remarkable agreement with ab-initio calculations over the complete phonon energy range demonstrating the accuracy of such calculations in a rare comparison to a comprehensive experimental data set., Comment: accepted for publication in PRL

Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated with a uniaxial charge-density modulation and does not mediate d-wave superconductivity., Comment: to appear in PRL

The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scatterings. The pressure range was large enough to cover the first-order phase transition into the so-called collapsed phase where the c-axis contracts by about 6% whereas a and b axes expand by about 1.5%. Our main result is that pressure-induced phonon frequency shifts are well explained by the changes in relevant bond lengths throughout the pressure range, including those associated with the first-order phase transition. Specifically, the frequencies of phonons polarized in the ab plane as well as the Fe-As bond lengths change little across the phase transition. On the other hand, the transverse-acoustic phonons propagating along the c direction stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the bonds along the c axis. Nonmagnetic density-functional calculations describe the frequencies in both the zero pressure and in the collapsed phase in a satisfactory way if based on the respective experimental crystal structures. This suggests that there is no need to invoke changes in magnetic moments on Fe atoms to explain the pressure-induced frequency shifts.

An extensive calorimetric study of the normal- and superconducting-state properties of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is presented for 0 < x < 0.2. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases (decreases) with Co doping for x < 0.06 (x > 0.06), which illustrates the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity to monopolize the Fermi surface in the underdoped region and the filling of the hole bands for overdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. All superconducting samples exhibit a residual electronic density of states of unknown origin in the zero-temperature limit, which is minimal at optimal doping but increases to the normal-state value in the strongly under- and over-doped regions. The remaining specific heat in the superconducting state is well described using a two-band model with isotropic s-wave superconducting gaps., Submitted to Europhysics Letters

Extensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonons on a single crystal of CaFe2As2 allowed us to establish a fairly complete picture of phonon dispersions in the main symmetry directions. The phonon spectra were also calculated by density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA). There are serious discrepancies between calculations done for the optimized structure and experiment, because the optimised structure is not the ambient pressure structure but is very close to the "collapsed" structure reached at p = 3.5 kbar. However, if the experimental crystal structure is used the calculation gives correct frequencies of most phonons. The most important new result is that linewidths/frequencies of certain modes are larger/softer than predicted by DFT-LDA. We also observed strong temperature dependence of some phonons near the structural phase transition near 172 K. This behavior may indicate anomalously strong electron phonon coupling and/or anharmonicity, which may be important to the mechanism of superconductivity.

Interactions with electronic excitations can soften and/or broaden phonons. They are greatly amplified at wavevectors Q+- that connect parallel (nested) sheets of the Fermi surface. In such a case, called a Kohn anomaly, the phonon dispersion sharply dips and its linewidth has a maximum at Q+-. Here we present results of inelastic x-ray scattering measurements that uncovered soft phonons in chromium far from Q+-. They appear in addition to the previously reported soft phonons at Q+-. Calculations in the local density approximation (LDA) show that the new anomalies originate from enhanced electron-phonon coupling. A similar mechanism may explain phonon anomalies away from nesting wavevectors in copper oxide superconductors and other compounds.

We measured phonon frequencies and linewidths in doped and undoped BaFe2As2 single crystals by inelastic x-ray scattering and compared our results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In agreement with previous work, the calculated frequencies of some phonons depended on whether the ground state was magnetic or not and, in the former case, whether phonon wavevector was parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic ordering wavevector. The experimental results agreed better with the magnetic calculation than with zero Fe moment calculations, except the peak splitting expected due to magnetic domain twinning was not observed. Furthermore, phonon frequencies were unaffected by the breakdown of the magnetic ground state due to either doping or increased temperature. In Fe-As based superconductors magnetism and superconductivity show strong sensitivity to the lattice, suggesting a possibility of unconventional electron-phonon coupling. We investigated c-axis polarized phonons in doped and undoped BaFe2As2 by inelastic X-ray scattering. Phonon peak positions and linewidths did not vary significantly as a function of doping either by Co or by K. The linewidth of the Fe vibration shows unusual wavevector-dependence, which may be due to hybridization with in-plane modes. Comparison with the density functional theory shows significant difference for the energy of the As-As vibrations (Raman active at the zone center) but not for the Fe-As vibrations (infrared-active at the zone center). This behavior cannot be explained by a 10% softening of Fe-As interaction strength as proposed previously for in-plane polarized vibrations.

We have investigated the lattice dynamics of LiBC. Experimental Raman and inelastic neutron scattering results are confronted with density functional calculations. The excellent agreement between experiment and theory indicates that we have attained a high level of understanding for LiBC, which by its structure is closely related to superconducting MgB2 We will show that annealing of the sample is insufficient to cause Li deficiency and thus produce the expected superconductivity., 4 pages, 3 figures

Polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the B 1s edge of single-crystalline Mg(x)Al(1-x)B(2) reveals a strongly anisotropic electronic structure near the Fermi energy. Comparing spectra for superconducting compounds (x=0.9, 1.0) with those for the non-superconductor x=0.0 gives direct evidence on the importance of an in-plane spectral feature crossing E_F for the superconducting properties of the diborides. We present a first principles investigation of the lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling of the superconductor MgB_2 and the isostructural AlB_2 within the framework of density functional perturbation theory using a mixed-basis pseudopotential method. Complete phonon dispersion curves and Eliashberg functions \alpha^2F are calculated for both systems. We also report on Raman measurements, which support the theoretical findings. The calculated generalized density-of-states for MgB_2 is in excellent agreement with recent neutron-scattering experiments. The main differences in the calculated phonon spectra and \alpha^2F are related to high frequency in-plane boron vibrations. As compared to AlB_2, they are strongly softened in MgB_2 and exhibit an exceptionally strong coupling to electronic states at the Fermi energy. The total coupling constants are \lambda_{MgB_2}=0.73 and \lambda_{AlB_2}=0.43. We present a new Ginzburg-Landau theory for superconductivity in UPt$_3$, based upon a multicomponent order parameter transforming under an irreducible space group representation; the phase is staggered in real space. Our model can explain the $H-T-P$ phase diagram including the tetracritical point for all field directions. We motivate this unconventional superconducting state in terms of odd-in-time-reversal pairing that may arise in one- or two-channel Kondo models, and suggest experimental tests., 12 pages, 3 postscript figures are appended as a uuencoded file, RevTeX 3.0

Furthermore, phonons entailing strongly varying Fe–Fe distances are damped via dynamic coupling to the temperature-induced magnetic moments, highlighting FeSi as a material with direct spin–phonon coupling and multiple interaction paths.

The energy gap Delta of superconducting Pb islands grown on Si(111) was probed in situ between 5 and 60 monolayers by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Delta was found to decrease from its bulk value as a function of inverse island thickness. Corresponding T-c values, estimated using bulk gap-to-T-c ratio, are in quantitative agreement with ex situ magnetic susceptibility measurements, however, in strong contrast to previous scanning probe results. Layer-dependent ab initio density functional calculations for freestanding Pb films show that the electron-phonon coupling constant, determining T-c, decreases with diminishing film thickness.

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy at 5 and 50 K, we studied the linewidth of unoccupied quantum-well states in ultrathin Pb islands, grown on Si(111) on two different Pb/Si interfaces. A quantitative analysis of the differential conductance spectra allowed us to determine the electron-electron (e-e), electron-phonon (e-ph) and the interface and defect contributions to the lifetime. Layer-dependent ab initio calculations of the e-ph linewidth contribution are in excellent agreement with the data. Importantly, the sum of the calculated e-e and e-ph lifetime broadening follows the experimentally observed quadratic energy dependence.

The quasi two-dimensional electron gas on a metal film can transmit to the surface even minute mechanical disturbances occurring in the depth, thus allowing the gentlest of all surface probes, helium atoms, to perceive the vibrations of the deepest atoms via the induced surface-charge density oscillations. A density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and a helium atom scattering study of the phonon dispersion curves in lead films of up to 7 mono-layers on a copper substrate show that: (a) the electron-phonon interaction is responsible for the coupling of He atoms to in-depth phonon modes; and (b) the inelastic HAS intensity from a given phonon mode is proportional to its electron-phonon coupling. The direct determination of mode-selected electron-phonon coupling strengths has great relevance for understanding superconductivity in thin films and two-dimensional systems. The electron-phonon coupling (EPC) strength for each phonon mode in superconducting Pb films is measured by inelastic helium atom scattering (IHAS). This surprising ability of IHAS relies on two facts: (a) In ultrathin metal films, the EPC range exceeds the film thickness, thus enabling IHAS to detect most film phonons, even 1 nm below the surface; (b) IHAS scattering amplitudes from single phonons are shown, by first-principle arguments, to be proportional to the respective EPC strengths. 4 páginas, 3 figuras.-- et al., We present an ab initio study of the effect of spin–orbit coupling on the dynamical properties of the Tl(0001) surface as well as on the electron–phonon interaction at the surface. The calculations based on density-functional theory were carried out using a linear response approach and a mixed-basis pseudopotential method.
