The response of evapotranspiration to anthropogenic warming is of critical importance for the water and carbon cycle. Contradictory conclusions about evapotranspiration changes are caused primarily by their brevity in time and sparsity in space, as well as the strong influence of internal variability. Here, we present the first gridded reconstruction of the summer vapour pressure deficit (VPD) for the past four centuries at the European level. This gridded reconstruction is based on 26 European tree-ring oxygen isotope records and is obtained using a Random Forest approach. Based on our reconstruction, we show that from the mid- 1700s, a trend towards higher VPD occurred in Central Europe and the Mediterranean region which is related to a simultaneous increase in temperature and decrease in precipitation. This increasing VPD trend continues throughout the observational period and in recent times. Moreover, our VPD reconstruction helps to visualize the local and regional impacts of the current climate change as well as to minimize statistical uncertainties of historical VPD variability. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary use of the data should be emphasized, as VPD is a crucial parameter for many climatological feedback processes in the earth surface system. Poor drought tolerance of European beech trees raised concerns in Europe. We hypothesized that beech could show an opposite physiological response to the same level of climatic drought with change in edaphic drought. We performed a combined analysis of δ13C and δ18O in tree rings to reveal retrospective temporal physiological responses of trees to drought. The edaphic drought was assessed by quantifying the capacity of soil to store water in plots (classified as “dry” and “less-dry”) near the drought limit of the species in three near-natural oak-beech ecotones in Germany and Switzerland. Neighbourhood competition was quantified. A climatic drought index was calculated from meteorological records and related to the δ13C and δ18O values of the trees. Trees from dry plots showed a higher response to drought and climatic dependency than less-dry plots. Neighbourhood competetion increased δ18O values significantly. Dual isotope analysis shows a tendency of greater stomatal resistance in dry plots and higher stomatal conductance in less-dry plots. We conclude that beech trees belonging to the same population under changing soil water availability can show different physiological responses under climatic drought stress. Our finding indicates the high plasticity of the beech trees to survive drought stress with changing site conditions.

Large earthquakes can increase the amount of water feeding stream flows, raise groundwater levels, and thus grant plant roots more access to water in water‐limited environments. We examine growth and photosynthetic responses of Pine plantations to the Maule Mw 8.8 earthquake in headwater catchments of Chile's Coastal Range. We combine high‐resolution wood anatomic (lumen area) and biogeochemical (δ13C of wood cellulose) proxies of daily to weekly tree growth sampled from trees on floodplains and close to ridge lines. We find that, immediately after the earthquake, at least two out of six tree trees on valley floors had increased lumen area and decreased δ13C, while trees on hillslopes had a reverse trend. Our results indicate a control of soil water on this response, largely consistent with models that predict how enhanced postseismic vertical soil permeability causes groundwater levels to rise on valley floors, but fall along the ridges. Statistical analysis with boosted regression trees indicates that streamflow discharge gained predictive importance for photosynthetic activity on the ridges, but lost importance on the valley floor after the earthquake. We infer that earthquakes may stimulate ecohydrological conditions favoring tree growth over days to weeks by triggering stomatal opening. The weak and short‐lived signals that we identified, however, show that such responses are only valid under water‐limited, rather than energy‐limited tree, growth. Hence, dendrochronological studies targeted at annual resolution may overlook some earthquake effects on tree vitality., Plain Language Summary: Earthquakes deform and shake Earth's surface and the ground below. These changes may affect groundwater flow. Groundwater level may rise in the valley bottom and drop along higher elevated ridges. Trees depend on such groundwater resources, particularly in dry climates. Hence, we expect contrasting responses of trees after earthquakes: at higher elevations, access to groundwater may be impeded, but enabled in the valley bottoms. Thus, earthquake‐enhanced tree growth should be pronounced only on valley floors, with opposite responses happening along ridges. We test this hypothesis in pine forest plantations that were affected by the 2010 Maule earthquake, Chile. We find that tree growth increased following the earthquake because of enhanced photosynthesis on valley floors, but decreased on upper hillslopes due to increased water stress. Overall, these responses are small but measurable. Our study is the first to combine state‐of‐the‐art isotopic and wood anatomic proxies that we quantified at the cellular scale. The African baobab, Adansonia digitata L., has great paleoclimatological potential because of its wide distributional range and millennial length life span. However, dendroclimatological approaches are hampered by dating uncertainties due to its unique, parenchyma-dominated stem anatomy. Here, securely dated time series of annual wood increment growth and intra-ring stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen of cellulose for a baobab tree from Oman covering 1941 to 2005 were established and tested for relationships to hydroclimate variability. Precise dating with the atomic bomb peak (ABP) using highly resolved 14C measurements confirmed the annual character of the baobab's growth rings. F14C values of tree-ring cellulose were found up to 8.8 % lower than in the corresponding atmospheric CO2 for the period around the ABP, which in conjunction with a considerable autocorrelation of the δ13C series points to the incorporation of previous year's carbon contributing to the average age of intra-ring wood samples. F14C of terminal parenchyma bands, marking the tree-ring boundaries, were found to be considerably younger than their corresponding tree ring, indicating that parenchyma tissue is alive for many years, probably undergoing cell division and structural reorganization and contributing to secondary growth. In contrast to the δ13C time series, no significant autocorrelation was found in the δ18O series of tree-ring cellulose despite the enormous water storage potential of this stem-succulent tree species. Year-to-year variability in tree-ring width and stable isotope ratios revealed radial stem growth and the geochemistry of wood cellulose are influenced by fluctuations in the hydroclimate. In particular, δ18O was found to be a good climate proxy, followed by tree-ring width and δ13C. Tree-ring width and intra-ring δ18Omin correlated well with each other and with precipitation amount for the period from pre-monsoon May to the end of the monsoon season in September/October. Intra-annual stable isotope courses were found to be rather similar for both δ13C and δ18O. Years with particularly low monsoon rain were reflected by increased stable isotope values in the mid-section of intra-annual courses. Distinct patterns with low subseasonal isotope values seem indicative for years with heavy rainfall events from pre-monsoonal cyclones. System Erde; 9, The main focus of the TERENO Northeastern German Lowland Observatory (TERENO-Northeast) is the regional impact of Global Change. Since 2011, the observatory has recorded changes in the geo-, hydro-, bio- and atmosphere at six main study sites. The year 2018, particularly in northeast Germany, was record-breaking in regard to dryness and heat. The mean temperature in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was 2 °C above the long-term average and precipitation was very low at 440 mm (normally around 600 mm). The extreme summer of 2018 was a special opportunity for TERENO-Northeast to measure the regional effects of climate change. One of the consequences was the large number of forest fires, with one major fire destroying around 400 hectares. Other extreme reactions of the ecosystems were shown in TERENO-Northeast. For example, for the first time since its rewetting, Polder Zarnekov fell dry, with unpredictable consequences for the greenhouse gas exchanges. The forest ecosystems of Müritz National Park, on the other hand, survived the extreme summer surprisingly well, partly because the months before the drought were relatively damp. The research activities of TERENO-Northeast form an important basis to develop realistic options for improved adaptation strategies to the ongoing global change with its particular region-specific effects and challenges.

The Northeast German Lowland Observatory (TERENO-NE) was established to investigate the regional impact of climate and land use change. TERENO-NE focuses on the Northeast German lowlands, for which a high vulnerability has been determined due to increasing temperatures and decreasing amounts of precipitation projected for the coming decades. To facilitate in-depth evaluations of the effects of climate and land use changes and to separate the effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers in the region, six sites were chosen for comprehensive monitoring. In addition, at selected sites, geoarchives were used to substantially extend the instrumental records back in time. It is this combination of diverse disciplines working across different time scales that makes the observatory TERENO-NE a unique observation platform. We provide information about the general characteristics of the observatory and its six monitoring sites and present examples of interdisciplinary research activities at some of these sites. We also illustrate how monitoring improves process understanding, how remote sensing techniques are fine-tuned by the most comprehensive ground-truthing site DEMMIN, how soil erosion dynamics have evolved, how greenhouse gas monitoring of rewetted peatlands can reveal unexpected mechanisms, and how proxy data provides a long-term perspective of current ongoing changes.

Observed recent and expected future increases in frequency and intensity of climatic extremes in central Europe may pose critical challenges for domestic tree species. Continuous dendrometer recordings provide a valuable source of information on tree stem radius variations, offering the possibility to study a tree's response to environmental influences at a high temporal resolution. In this study, we analyze stem radius variations (SRV) of three domestic tree species (beech, oak, and pine) from 2012 to 2014. We use the novel statistical approach of event coincidence analysis (ECA) to investigate the simultaneous occurrence of extreme daily weather conditions and extreme SRVs, where extremes are defined with respect to the common values at a given phase of the annual growth period. Besides defining extreme events based on individual meteorological variables, we additionally introduce conditional and joint ECA as new multivariate extensions of the original methodology and apply them for testing 105 different combinations of variables regarding their impact on SRV extremes. Our results reveal a strong susceptibility of all three species to the extremes of several meteorological variables. Yet, the inter-species differences regarding their response to the meteorological extremes are comparatively low. The obtained results provide a thorough extension of previous correlation-based studies by emphasizing on the timings of climatic extremes only. We suggest that the employed methodological approach should be further promoted in forest research regarding the investigation of tree responses to changing environmental conditions.

International audience; Nearly 13,000 years ago, the warming trend into the Holocene was sharply interrupted by a reversal to near glacial conditions. Climatic causes and ecological consequences of the Younger Dryas (YD) have been extensively studied, however proxy archives from the Mediterranean basin capturing this period are scarce and do not provide annual resolution. Here, we report a hydroclimatic reconstruction from stable isotopes (δ 18 O, δ 13 C) in subfossil pines from southern France. Growing before and during the transition period into the YD (12 900-12 600 cal BP), the trees provide an annually resolved, continuous sequence of atmospheric change. Isotopic signature of tree sourcewater (δ 18 O sw) and estimates of relative air humidity were reconstructed as a proxy for variations in air mass origin and precipitation regime. We find a distinct increase in inter-annual variability of sourcewater isotopes (δ 18 O sw), with three major downturn phases of increasing magnitude beginning at 12 740 cal BP. The observed variation most likely results from an amplified intensity of North Atlantic (low δ 18 O sw) versus Mediterranean (high δ 18 O sw) precipitation. This marked pattern of climate variability is not seen in records from higher latitudes and is likely a consequence of atmospheric circulation oscillations at the margin of the southward moving polar front. During the abrupt and intense climate change from the Allerød warm phase to the YD cold reversal in the North Hemisphere (ca. 12 700-11 600 cal BP) 1,2 sea-ice production and drifting enhanced 3 , alpine glaciers advanced 4 , storm intensity strengthened 5 , and a reorganization of the atmosphere 6,7 may have occurred. Greenland ice core data (NGRIP) reveal temperature drops of 10-15 °C with simultaneous reductions in snow accumulation and amplifications in atmospheric dust within less than a decade 6,8. During the rapid cooling, lake sediment records across Europe signal intensified wind stress, aridity and detrital input, alongside drastic ecological changes 5,9,10. The results are spatially heterogeneous in terms of hydrological change, as other European lake records find more humid conditions and/or increased quantity and intensity of precipitation (associated with higher lake levels in certain cases) 11,12. Model simulations constrained by proxy data indicate no single factor could cause the observed YD cold reversal, but rather a complex combination of weakened Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), altered atmospheric circulation patterns, and moderate negative radiative forcing as most plausible driving factors 13. Nevertheless, mechanisms of climate variability in the North Atlantic region remain under intense debate 8 , even for the most recent past 14 .

System Erde ; 7, Stable isotopes of the light elements Hydrogen (H), Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), and Oxygen (O) are being measured in section 5.2 Climate Dynamics and Landscape Evolution at the GFZ in different terrestrial climate archives such as lake sediments, speleothems and tree rings. The stable isotope ratios of these elements reflect environmental conditions like precipitation, temperature, productivity and vegetation type. To translate isotope parameters into high-quality proxies of past climate and environmental variability, monitoring devices have been deployed which detect seasonal variations, pathways and distortions of stable isotope signals. Oxygen stable isotopes play a major role in paleoclimatology because of their broad variation and fractionation of 16O and 18O in water, carbonate and biological systems. In general, the isotopic ratios of oxygen isotopes reflect changes in atmospheric circulation systems which are important drivers for climate variability. Back through time, the variations of oxygen isotope ratios (18O/16O) in precipitation and their corresponding climate fingerprint are conserved in lake sediments, speleothems and tree rings. Oxygen isotope records from networks of these geoarchives allow local to regional assessments of past climate variability.

The Greenland Stadial 1 (GS-1; ~12.9 to 11.65 kyr cal BP) was a period of North Atlantic cooling, thought to have been initiated by North America fresh water runoff that caused a sustained reduction of North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), resulting in an antiphase temperature response between the hemispheres (the ‘bipolar seesaw’). Here we exploit sub-fossil New Zealand kauri trees to report the first securely dated, decadally-resolved atmospheric radiocarbon (14C) record spanning GS-1. By precisely aligning Southern and Northern Hemisphere tree-ring 14C records with marine 14C sequences we document two relatively short periods of AMOC collapse during the stadial, at ~12,920-12,640 cal BP and 12,050-11,900 cal BP. In addition, our data show that the interhemispheric atmospheric 14C offset was close to zero prior to GS-1, before reaching ‘near-modern’ values at ~12,660 cal BP, consistent with synchronous recovery of overturning in both hemispheres and increased Southern Ocean ventilation. Hence, sustained North Atlantic cooling across GS-1 was not driven by a prolonged AMOC reduction but probably due to an equatorward migration of the Polar Front, reducing the advection of southwesterly air masses to high latitudes. The dynamics of the Late Glacial have been demonstrated by numerous records from the Northern Hemisphere and far fewer from the Southern Hemisphere (SH). SH paleoclimate records reveal a general warming trend, interrupted by a deglaciation pause Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR; ∼14,700–13,000 cal BP). Here, we present decadal tree‐ring stable isotope chronologies (δ18O, δ13C) from New Zealand (NZ) subfossil kauri trees (n = 6) covering the post‐ACR millennium from 13,020 to 11,850 cal BP. We find a distinct, simultaneous downturn (∼12,625–12,375 cal BP) in all tree‐ring proxies paralleling regional tree growth declines, suggesting a widespread climate deterioration. This downturn was characterized by sustained high precipitation, low temperatures, and high relative humidity in NZ with incoming weather fronts from the South Ocean. Despite these promising results, questions remain about what drove the Kauri Downturn and how the hydroclimatic conditions were altered during this time period.

Purification protocols to extract pollen from lake sediments contain chemicals that alter the carbon and oxygen pollen‐isotope values according to pollen characteristics and family affiliation. Modern (raw) pollen of broad‐leaved (Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula, Carpinus betulus, Corylus avellana, Fagus sylvatica and Quercus robur) and coniferous tree species (Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris) were treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH), hydrofluoric acid (HF), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) to test the impact on δ13Cpollen and δ18Opollen and assess the applicability in purification protocols. Pollen of broad‐leaved and coniferous trees reacted differently to chemical exposure, but response patterns are generally alike. Alterations of δ13Cpollen values vary between + 1.0‰ (B. pendula, NaClO‐treatment) and −5.0‰ (P. sylvestris, H2SO4‐treatment). The δ13Cpollen values of raw and chemically treated samples seem to be related after treatments with KOH, NaClO and HF, whereas the application of H2SO4 led to inconsistent changes among species. The impact of chemicals on δ18Opollen are more diverse and offsets range between +1.1‰ (C. avellana, NaClO‐treatment) and −17.9‰ (P. sylvestris, H2SO4‐treatment). This publication is the outcome of the “Dendrosymposium 2002“, a tree-ring conference held from April 11th – 13th 2002 at the University of Bonn (Institute of Geography) and the Research Centre Jülich (Institute of Sedimentary Systems, ICG V). The aims of the German-language symposium were (i) to present the state of the art as well as new research perspectives in the different fields of dendrochronology, (ii) to stimulate further investigations and closer collaboration between different research groups and (iii) to strengthen dendrochronological sciences in central European research. About 50 scientists from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and The Netherlands attended the meeting. In total, 20 talks and 19 posters covering the topics (1) Archaeology, (2) Long Records, (3) Climatology, (4) Isotopes and Climate, (5) Isotopes and Plant Physiology, (6) Dendroecology, (7) Forest Dynamics at the Timberline and (8) Geomorphology were presented. The contributions clearly documented the topical and methodological progress that has been achieved in dendrochronology during the last years, including new approaches such as stable isotope analysis, dendrogeomorphology or ecophysiological aspects. The proceedings volume contains 21 extended abstracts. In order to give a comprehensive overview, shorter abstracts of participants, who did not submit a long version, are additionally included in their original language. Another important goal of the conference was the first meeting of the “Gesellschaft für Jahrringforschung” GJF (“Association of Tree Ring Research” ATR) founded in September 2001 in Davos. Gerhard Schleser (Research Centre Jülich) and Esther Jansma (National Service for Archaeological Heritage/The Netherlands) have been elected for a period of two years as the president and vice president of the Association, respectively. Considering his outstanding scientific and educational merits Fritz Schweingruber was assigned as honorary president.
