Le 49e traité des Ennéades reprend le précepte delphique « connais-toi toi-même », mais d’une manière surprenante pour des lecteurs modernes. Le « soi-même » dont il est question n’est pas en effet le moi empirique, considéré dans sa singularité et son histoire personnelle et sociale. Ce n’est pas un moi donné à une introspection, un examen de conscience, ou à des techniques d’analyse, c’est un « soi » à constituer par identification progressive avec ce qui, en lui, est plus haut que lui. Ce traité nous exhorte donc moins à connaître ce que nous sommes qu’à devenir ce que nous devons être si nous voulons être véritablement nous-mêmes. Il indique un chemin à parcourir, qui s’achève sur le célèbre et paradoxal « retranche tout » : seul le plus grand dépouillement est accès à ce qui, incomparablement meilleur que soi, ne peut s’atteindre que par la plus intense concentration sur soi. Tous les grands thèmes de la pensée de Plotin sont ici présents, et aussi toutes ses difficultés. Les articles de ce volume constituent donc non seulement un précieux instrument d’étude de ce traité particulier, ils sont un moyen d’accès à la philosophie de Plotin dans son ensemble; plus essentiellement, ils offrent une occasion de réfléchir à ce qui peut, à bon droit, se nommer connaissance de soi, et mieux encore, à ce qui peut être reconnu comme étant « soi-même ».

Werner Jaeger (1888-1961) war für seine Zeit der brillianteste und einflußreichste deutscher Klassicist. Sein wichtigstes Werk war die drei-teilige Studie "Paideia. Die Formung des griechischen Menschen", (1933-1947). Dieses Werk war mehr als ein gelehrtes Buch über Pädagogie in der antiken Welt. Es war ein Versuch, die Geschichte antiken Denkens zu deuten - von den Homerschen Epen bis zur attischen Tragödie und der Platonschen Philosophie, sowie deren Absicht, die Menschen zu bilden oder zu formen. Dabei versuchte dieses Werk einer zeitgenössischen deutschen Bewegung beizutragen, die (nicht ganz unproblematisch) "Dritter Humanismus" hieß. In diesem Aufsatz, gebe ich eine kritische Übersicht über das Werk Jaegers, seine Stärken und Schwächen.

The paper first analyses the Ciceronian sources of Augustine’s idea of justice, then argues that Augustine maintains a kind of “supernatural” view of politics (that is, an interpretation of politics on the background of divine forces), which leaves no room for a normative evaluation of the socio-political sphere. The specific feature of Augustine’s political “supernaturalism”, in fact, is the idea that original sin, depriving man of divine grace, prevents the earthly world from being an improvable copy of an ideal model.

In this thesis, I compare Hannah Arendt's view on political disobedience with the positions of three liberal theorists, namely, John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin and Joseph Raz. The aim of this comparison consists in identifying the difficulties found in these later theories to justify political and democratic disobedience and in discussing the way in which Arendt's approach to politics could help us to solve these difficulties. My main methodological hypothesis is that the political participation of citizens plays a secondary role in these liberal theories. For the latter, citizen participation should be limited either because of its possible disturbing effects on the necessary political and social stability, which would ensure the functioning of just institutions (Rawls), or because it would threaten the principles of democratic politics, namely the majority principle and the corresponding right to vote (Dworkin), or because liberal societies par definitionem ensure political rights and so civil disobedience is unjustified in most cases (Raz). 2011 - 2012 La nOZIOne di "vita" assume nel penSIero plotiniano un ruolo assolutamente centrale: non è possibile, infatti, comprendere la costruzione del sistema metafisico di Plotino, prescindendo dall'analisi del significato che il termine çm" assume nei singoli contesti. Nonostante il filosofo neoplatonico dedichi molto spazio all'analisi e alla formulazione del concetto di vita, tuttavia tale concetto rimane alquanto problematico. Non è infatti semplice l) definire la vita in se stessa, 2) comprendere dove risieda nel suo senso autentico, 3) cogliere la relazione che essa intrattiene con le varie ipostasi. Il filosofo neoplatonico, nell'elaborazione del pensiero sulla vita, è influenzato dalla metafisica platonica e da quella aristotelica, nella misura in cui la vita è considerata auto-moventesi ('tò au-tò KtVOUV) ed attività (èvèpYEta). L'essenza stessa dell'essere vivente è descritta come un insieme di attività, le quali assumono diverse funzioni a seconda della diversità delle membra, ma che nel loro insieme concorrono al mantenimento della vita dell'intero. La nozione di vita può riferirsi, in modo differente, sia all'Intelletto che all'Anima, essa coincide con l'eternità e con il tempo, ed inoltre presiede allo sviluppo di una teoria dell'organismo, ovvero della generazione degli organismi viventi. Il filosofo neoplatonico, pertanto, utilizza la nozione di vita non soltanto in senso metafisico, ossia per dare definizione dell'essenza della realtà dell'Intelletto e di quella dell' Anima, ma anche in un contesto biologico, ossia, per descrivere gli aspetti costitutivi dell' essere vivente. Despite the Neoplatonic philosopher devotes much space to the analysis and formulation of the concept of life, nevertheless such concept remains somewhat problematico It is not simple, in fact: 1. define life itself; 2. understand where lies in its real meaning; 3. see the relationship that it entertains with the various hypostases. The Neoplatonic philosopher, in the elaboration of the thought on life, was influenced by Platonic and Aristotelian metaphysics, in measure as life is considered selfmotion ('tÒ OtYrò KtVOUV) and activity (èvépYEta). The essence of the living being is described as a set of activities, which assume different functions depending on the diversity of its member, but which together they contribute to the maintenance of the whole life (Enn. III 3 (48), 5, 3-5). The concept of life can relate, in different ways, both to the Intellect and Soul; it coincides with the eternity and time, and also presides the theory concerning the generation of living organisms. The Neoplatonic philosopher, therefore, uses the notion of life not on1y in metaphysical sense, i.e. to defme the essence of Mind and Soul, but also in a biological context, i.e. to describe the constitutive aspects ofthe being. This job proceeds, then, to the analysis of the notion of life in thought of Plotinus, with an adeguate scientific methodology, that appeals to the tools of the philology and philosophical historiography, in order to understand, in first pIace, the meaning of the term life, with the aim of giving a defmition; secondly, to trace its characters, analyzing all the different contexts that it delimits...
