In this paper, we study spontaneous scalarization of asymptotically anti-de Sitter charged black holes in an Einstein–Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. In this model, Reissner–Nordström-AdS (RNAdS) black holes are scalar-free black hole solutions, and may induce scalarized black holes due to the presence of a tachyonic instability of the scalar field near the event horizon. For RNAdS and scalarized black hole solutions, we investigate the domain of existence, perturbative stability against spherical perturbations and phase structure. In a micro-canonical ensemble, scalarized solutions are always thermodynamically preferred over RNAdS black holes. However, the system has much richer phase structure and phase transitions in a canonical ensemble. In particular, we report a RNAdS BH/scalarized BH/RNAdS BH reentrant phase transition, which is composed of a zeroth-order phase transition and a second-order one.

It has been recently reported that, at late times, the total luminosity of a star freely falling in black holes decays exponentially with time, and one or two series of flashes with decreasing intensity are seen by a specific observer, depending on the number of photon spheres. In this paper, we examine observational appearances of an infalling star in a reflection-asymmetric wormhole, which has two photon spheres, one on each side of the wormhole. We find that the late-time total luminosity measured by distant observers gradually decays with time or remains roughly constant due to the absence of the event horizon. Moreover, a specific observer would detect a couple of light flashes in a bright background at late times. In previous works, we have developed an approach to fix the leading behaviors of the pure AdS $$_3$$ 3 and BTZ black hole from the entanglement entropies of the free CFT $$_2$$ 2 and finite temperature CFT $$_2$$ 2 , respectively. We exclusively use holographic principle only and make no restriction about the bulk geometry, not only the kinematics but also the dynamics. In order to verify the universality and correctness of our method, in this paper, we apply it to the $$T\bar{T}$$ T T ¯ deformed CFT $$_2$$ 2 , which breaks the conformal symmetry. In terms of the physical arguments of the $$T\bar{T}$$ T T ¯ deformed CFT $$_2$$ 2 , the derived metric is a deformed BTZ black hole. The requirement that the CFT $$_2$$ 2 lives on a conformally flat boundary leads to $$r_{c}^{2}=\ 6R_{AdS}^{4}/(\pi c\mu )$$ r c 2 = 6 R AdS 4 / ( π c μ ) naturally, in perfect agreement with previous conjectures in literature. The energy spectum and propagation speed calculated with this deformed BTZ metric are the same as these derived from $$T\bar{T}$$ T T ¯ deformed CFT $$_2$$ 2 . We furthermore fix the dual geometry of highly excited states with our approach. The result contains the descriptions for the conical defect and BTZ black hole.

In this paper, we extend the phase space of black holes enclosed by a spherical cavity of radius $r_{B}$ to include $V\equiv4\pi r_{B}^{3}/3$ as a thermodynamic volume. The thermodynamic behavior of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black holes is then investigated in the extended phase space. In a canonical ensemble at constant pressure, we find that the aforementioned thermodynamic behavior is remarkably similar to that of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) counterparts with the cosmological constant being interpreted as a pressure. Specifically, a first-order Hawking-Page-like phase transition occurs for a Schwarzschild black hole in a cavity. The phase structure of a RN black hole in a cavity shows a strong resemblance to that of the van der Waals fluid. We study gravitational lensing of light by hairy black holes, which, in a certain parameter regime, can possess two photon spheres of different size outside the event horizon. In particular, we focus on higher-order images of a point-like light source and a luminous celestial sphere produced by strong gravitational lensing near photon spheres. Two photon spheres usually triple the number of high-order images of a point-like light source. When a hairy black hole is illuminated by a celestial sphere, two photon spheres would give rise to two critical curves in the black hole image, and the smaller critical curve coincides with the shadow edge. Photon spheres play a pivotal role in the imaging of luminous objects near black holes. In this paper, we examine observational appearances of a star freely falling in hairy black holes, which can possess one or two photon spheres outside the event horizon. The measurements of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) provide a quite powerful tool to test the nature of astrophysical black hole candidates in the strong gravitational field regime. In this paper, we use QPOs within the relativistic precession model to test a recently proposed family of rotating black hole mimickers, which reduce to the Kerr metric in a limiting case, and can represent traversable wormholes or regular black holes with one or two horizons, depending on the values of the parameters. In particular, assuming that the compact object of GRO J1655-40 is described by a rotating black hole mimicker, we perform a $\chi$-square analysis to fit the parameters of the mimicker with two sets of observed QPO frequencies from GRO J1655-40. Our results indicate that although the metric around the compact object of GRO J1655-40 is consistent with the Kerr metric, a regular black hole with one horizon is favored by the observation data of GRO J1655-40., Comment: v1: 9 pages with 2 figures

For the bosonic gravi-dilaton system, we provide systematical approaches to construct non-perturbative string cosmological solutions without curvature singularities, which can match the perturbative solution to any order in α′ expansion. When higher order α′ corrections are calculated, they can be straightforwardly plugged in to generate compatible non-perturbative evolutions without curvature singularities. We also give a (phenomenological) map between α′ corrected EOM and loop corrected EOM. This map enables us to easily generate a loop corrected solution from an α′ corrected solution, and vice versa, therefore substantially enlarges the solution space.

We first use the Hamilton–Jacobi method to describe the motion in curved spacetime of a scalar particle and a fermion, which are shown to satisfy the same Hamilton–Jacobi equation. To investigate the laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship, we focus on D-dimensional asymptotically AdS charged black hole solutions in general nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). With absorbing a charged particle, the variation of the generic charged NLED black hole is calculated in the normal and extended phase spaces. In the normal phase space, where the cosmological constant and dimensionful parameters in NLED are fixed, the first and second laws of thermodynamics are satisfied. In the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant and dimensionful parameters in NLED are treated as thermodynamic variables, the first law of thermodynamics is also satisfied. However, the black hole entropy can either increase or decrease depending on the changes in the dimensionful parameters. Furthermore, we find that the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is valid for the extremal and near-extremal black holes in the both phase spaces.

In this paper, we study thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically AdS hairy and Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m-AdS (RNAdS) black holes in the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as a thermal pressure. The RNAdS and hairy black holes are black hole solutions of an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields. Recently, the image of a Schwarzschild black hole with an accretion disk has been revisited, and it showed that the "photon ring", defined as highly bent light rays that intersect the disk plane more than twice, is extremely narrow and makes a negligible contribution to the total brightness. In this paper, we investigate the observational appearance of an optically and geometrically thin accretion disk around a hairy black hole in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model. Intriguingly, we find that in a certain parameter regime, due to an extra maximum or an "ankle-like" structure in the effective potential for photons, the photon ring can be remarkably wide, thus making a notable contribution to the flux of the observed image. The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization of Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m (RN) black holes has recently been found in\ an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) model due to a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. Non-linear electrodynamics, e.g., Born-Infeld (BI) electrodynamics, generalizes Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Non-minimally coupling the BI field to the scalar field, we study spontaneous scalarization of an Einstein-Born-Infeld-scalar (EBIS) model in this paper. It shows that there are two types of scalarized black hole solutions, i.e., scalarized RN-like and Schwarzschild-like solutions. Although the behavior of scalarized RN-like solutions in the EBIS model is quite similar to that of scalarize solutions in the EMS model, we find that there exist significant differences between scalarized Schwarzschild-like solutions in the EBIS model and scalarized solutions in the EMS model. In particular, the domain of existence of scalarized Schwarzschild-like solutions possesses a certain region, which is composed of two branches. The branch of larger horizon area is a family of disconnected scalarized solutions, which do not bifurcate from scalar-free black holes. However, the branch of smaller horizon area may or may not bifurcate from scalar-free black holes depending on the parameters. Additionally, these two branches of scalarized solutions can be both entropically disfavored over comparable scalar-free black holes in some parameter region.

It was proved more than three decades ago, that the first order $\alpha'$ correction of string effective theory could be written as the Gauss-Bonnet term, which is the quadratic term of Lovelock gravity. In cosmological background, with an appropriate field redefinition, we reorganize the infinite $\alpha'$ corrections of string effective action into a finite term expression for any specific dimension. This finite term expression matches Lovelock gravity exactly and thus fix the couplings of Lovelock gravity by the coefficients of string effective action. In this paper, we first consider null geodesics of a class of charged, spherical and asymptotically flat hairy black holes in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with a non-minimal coupling for the scalar and electromagnetic fields. Remarkably, we show that there are two unstable circular orbits for a photon in a certain parameter regime, corresponding to two unstable photon spheres of different sizes outside the event horizon. To illustrate the optical appearance of photon spheres, we then consider a simple spherical model of optically thin accretion on the hairy black hole, and obtain the accretion image seen by a distant observer. In the single photon sphere case, only one bright ring appears in the image, and is identified as the edge of the black hole shadow. We consider a holographic model with the charge current dual to a general nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) field. Taking into account the backreaction of the NLED field on the geometry and introducing axionic scalars to generate momentum dissipation, we obtain expressions for DC conductivities with a finite magnetic field. The properties of the in-plane resistance are examined in several NLED models. For Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics, negative magneto-resistance and Mott-like behavior could appear in some parameter space region. Depending on the sign of the parameters, we expect the NLED models to mimic some type of weak or strong interactions between electrons. In the latter case, negative magneto-resistance and Mott-like behavior can be realized at low temperatures. It has been shown that the Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) can be violated by a scalar field in a near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. In this paper, we investigate the Strong Cosmic Censorship in a Born-Infeld-de Sitter black hole by a scalar perturbation field with/without a charge. When the Born-Infeld parameter b becomes small, the nonlinear electrodynamics effect starts to play an important role and tends to rescue SCC. Specifically, we find that the SCC violation region decreases in size with decreasing b. Moreover, for a sufficiently small b, SCC can always be restored in a near-extremal Born-Infeld-de Sitter black hole with a fixed charge ratio., 19 pages, 7 figures

It has been shown that the Christodoulou version of the Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) conjecture can be violated for a scalar field in a near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. In this paper, we investigate the effects of higher derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action on the validity of SCC, by considering a neutral massless scalar perturbation in 5- and 6-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes. Our numerical results exhibit that the higher derivative term plays a different role in the d = 5 case than it does in the d = 6 case. For d = 5, the SCC violation region increases as the strength of the higher derivative term increases. For d = 6, the SCC violation region first increases and then decreases as the higher derivative correction becomes stronger, and SCC can always be restored for a black hole with a fixed charge ratio when the higher derivative correction is strong enough. The thermodynamic geometry has been proved to be quite useful in understanding the microscopic structure of black holes. We investigate the phase structure, thermodynamic geometry and critical behavior of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole and a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in a cavity, which can reach equilibrium in a canonical ensemble. Although the phase structure and critical behavior of both cases show striking resemblance, we find that there exist significant differences between the thermodynamic geometry of these two cases. In string theory, an important challenge is to show if the big-bang singularity could be resolved by the higher derivative α′ corrections. In this work, based on the Hohm-Zwiebach action, we construct a series of non-singular non-perturbative cosmological solutions with the complete α′ corrections, for the bosonic gravi-dilaton system. In the perturbative regime, these solutions exactly match the perturbative results given in literature. Our results show that the big-bang singularity indeed could be smoothed out by the higher derivative α′ corrections.

We discuss the thermodynamics of a general nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) asymptotically flat black hole enclosed in a finite spherical cavity. A canonical ensemble is considered, which means that the temperature and the charge on the wall of the cavity are fixed. After the free energy is obtained by computing the Euclidean action, it shows that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied at the locally stationary points of the free energy. Focusing on a Born-Infeld (BI) black hole in a cavity, the phase structure and transition in various regions of the parameter space are investigated. In the region where the BI electrodynamics has weak nonlinearities, Hawking-Page-like and van der Waals-like phase transitions occur, and a tricritical point appears. In the region where the BI electrodynamics has strong enough nonlinearities, only Hawking-Page-like phase transitions occur. The phase diagram of the BI black hole in a cavity can have dissimilarity from that of a BI black hole using asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. To make a Born-Infeld (BI) black hole thermally stable, we consider two types of boundary conditions, i.e., the asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and a Dirichlet wall placed in the asymptotically flat space. The phase structures and transitions of these two types of BI black holes, namely BI-AdS black holes and BI black holes in a cavity, are investigated in a grand canonical ensemble, where the temperature and the potential are fixed. For BI-AdS black holes, the globally stable phases can be the thermal AdS space. For small values of the potential, there is a Hawking-Page-like first order phase transition between the BI-AdS black holes and the thermal-AdS space. However, the phase transition becomes zeroth order when the values of the potential are large enough. For BI black holes in a cavity, the globally stable phases can be a naked singularity or an extremal black hole with the horizon merging with the wall, which both are on the boundaries of the physical parameter region. The thermal flat space is never globally preferred. Besides a first order phase transition, there is a second order phase transition between the globally stable phases. By throwing a test charged particle into a Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole, we test the validity of the first and second laws of thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) with two types of boundary conditions, i.e., the asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and a Dirichlet cavity wall placed in the asymptotically at space. For the RN-AdS black hole, the second law of thermodynamics is satisfied, and the WCCC is violated for both extremal and nearextremal black holes. We investigate the thermodynamic behavior of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) black holes in an extended phase space, which includes the cosmological constant $\Lambda=-3/l^{2}$ and dimensionful couplings $a$ in NLED as thermodynamic variables. For a generic NLED black hole with the charge $Q$, we find that the Smarr relation is satisfied in the extended phase space, and the state of equation can be written as $Tl=\tilde{T}\left( r_{+}/l,Q/l,al^{-c} \right) $, where $\left[ a\right] =L^{c}$, and $T$ and $r_{+}$ are the temperature and horizon radius of the black hole, respectively. For some values of $Q/l$ and $al^{-c}$, the phase structure of the black hole is uniquely determined. Focusing on Born-Infeld and iBorn-Infeld AdS black holes, we obtain the corresponding phase diagrams in the $a/l^{2}$-$Q/l$ plane, which provides a new viewpoint towards the black holes' phase structure and critical behavior. For Born-Infeld black holes, the critical line and the region, where a reentrant phase transition occurs, in the $a/l^{2}$-$Q/l$ plane are both finite and terminate at $\left\{ \tilde{a}_{c}\text{, }\tilde{Q}_{c}\right\} \simeq\left\{ 0.069\text{, }0.37\right\} $. However for iBorn-Infeld black holes, the critical line and the reentrant phase transition region in the $a/l^{2}$-$Q/l$ plane are semi-infinite and extend to $Q/l=\infty$. To study quantum effects on the bulk tachyon dynamics, we replace $R$ with $f(R)$ in the low-energy effective action that couples gravity, the dilaton, and the bulk closed string tachyon of bosonic closed string theory and study properties of their classical solutions. The $\alpha^{\prime}$ corrections of the graviton-dilaton-tachyon system are implemented in the $f(R)$. We obtain the tachyon-induced rolling solutions and show that the string metric does not need to remain fixed in some cases. The singular behavior of more classical solutions are investigated and found to be modified by quantum effects. It is believed that the invariance of the generalised diffeomorphisms prevents any non-trivial dilaton potential from double field theory. It is therefore difficult to include loop corrections in the formalism. We show that by redefining a non-local dilaton field, under strong constraint which is necessary to preserve the gauge invariance of double field theory, the theory does permit non-constant dilaton potentials and loop corrections. Double field theory proposes a generalized spacetime action possessing manifest T-duality on the level of component fields. We calculate the cosmological solutions of double field theory with vanishing Kalb-Ramond field. It turns out that double field theory provides a more consistent way to construct cosmological solutions than the standard string cosmology. We construct solutions for vanishing and non-vanishing symmetry preserving dilaton potentials. The solutions assemble the pre- and post-big bang evolutions in one single line element. This novel feature provides a natural way for the theory to contain extra dimensions. Our results show a smooth evolution from an anisotropic early stage to an isotropic phase without any special initial conditions in contrast to previous models. In addition, we demonstrate that the contraction of the dual space automatically leads to both an inflation phase and a decelerated expansion of the ordinary space during different evolution stages., V3, 29 pages, 4 figures. In this paper, using Hamilton-Jacobi method, we address the tunnelling of fermions in a 4-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Base on the generalized uncertainty principle, we introduce the influence of quantum gravity. After solving the equation of motion of the spin 1/2 field, we derive the corrected Hawking temperature. It turns out that the correction depends not only on the black hole's mass but also on the mass (energy) of emitted fermions. It is of interest that, in our calculation, the quantum gravity correction decelerates the temperature increase during the radiation explicitly. This observation then naturally leads to the remnants in black hole evaporation. Our calculation shows that the residue mass is $\gtrsim M_p/\beta_0$, where $M_p$ is the Planck mass and $\beta_0$ is a dimensionless parameter accounting for quantum gravity effects. The standard Hawking formula predicts the complete evaporation of black holes. In this paper, we introduce effects of quantum gravity into fermions' tunneling from Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr black holes. The hidden conformal symmetry of extreme and non-extreme Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black holes is addressed in this paper. For the non-extreme one, employing the wave equation of massless scalars, the conformal symmetry with left temperature $T_{L}=\frac{M}{2\pi a}$ and right temperature $T_{R}=\frac{\sqrt{M^{2}-a^{2}}}{2\pi a}$ in the near region is found. The conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the periodicity of the azimuthal angle. The microscopic entropy is derived by the Cardy formula and is fully in consistence with the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy law. Motivated by the recent work of the hidden conformal symmetry of the Kerr black hole, we investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of a Kerr-Sen black hole and a Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole. Our result shows the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the periodicity of the azimuthal angle. The absorption across section is in consistence with the finite temperature absorption cross section for a 2D CFT. In this review, we discuss effects of quantum gravity on black hole physics. After a brief review of the origin of the minimal observable length from various quantum gravity theories, we present the tunneling method. To incorporate quantum gravity effects, we modify the Klein-Gordon equation and Dirac equation by the modified fundamental commutation relations. Then we use the modified equations to discuss the tunneling radiation of scalar particles and fermions. The corrected Hawking temperatures are related to the quantum numbers of the emitted particles. Quantum gravity corrections slow down the increase of the temperatures. The remnants are observed as $M_{\hbox{Res}}\gtrsim \frac{M_p}{\sqrt{\beta_0}}$. The mass is quantized by the modified Wheeler-DeWitt equation and is proportional to $n$ in quantum gravity regime. We show how non-commutativity arises from commutativity in the double sigma model. We demonstrate that this model is intrinsically non-commutative by calculating the propagators. In the simplest phase configuration, there are two dual copies of commutative theories. In general rotated frames, one gets a non-commutative theory and a commutative partner. Thus a non-vanishing $B$ also leads to a commutative theory. Our results imply that $O\left(D,D\right)$ symmetry unifies not only the big and small torus physics, but also the commutative and non-commutative theories. The physical interpretations of the metric and other parameters in the double sigma model are completely dictated by the boundary conditions. The open-closed relation is also an $O(D,D)$ rotation and naturally leads to the Seiberg-Witten map. Moreover, after applying a second dual rotation, we identify the description parameter in the Seiberg-Witten map as an $O(D,D)$ group parameter and all theories are non-commutative under this composite rotation.
