The goal of increasing efficiency and durability of fuel cells can be achieved through advanced model-based optimal control of its operating conditions. Efficient online estimation of fuel cell parameters and internal states is fundamental for the implementation of such advanced controllers. The exchange current density is a driving parameter of performance for the catalyst layer of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). This study presents a control oriented, stochastic filtering approach for online, continuous estimation of the exchange current density in low temperature PEMFCs. The fuel cell is framed as a Markov model where the exchange current density is posed as the stochastic hidden state. The physics-based, static equation of the exchange current density is converted into a state transition equation and the expression for cell voltage is employed as observation equation of a state estimator for approximating the posterior probability distribution of the PEMFC’s exchange current density. In order to remark the utility of the approach, the estimated value of the exchange current density is used to construct a nonlinear auto-regressive moving average with external inputs model (NARMAX) to track the evolution in catalyst active area associated with long term degradation. The proposed approach is implemented and tested with two different experimental datasets.

Trabajo presentado en el 17th MODVAL Symposium on Modeling and Experimental Validation of Electrochemical Energy Technologies, celebrado online del 20 al 22 de abril de 2021, The objective of the present work is to explore and validate autoregressive, control oriented models models Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells coperatinf under dynamic condditions. Autoregressive models have several advantages: they are obtained solely from input-output signals, have low computational cost, simple structure and a small number of parameters. Four datasets from experiments in static and dynamic operating conditions are used to estimate an validate the models, each dataset is divided into estimation and prediction subsets. The Box-Jenkins system identification method is used to built the model structure. The models are validated through analysis of the correlation of residuals by the Box-Ljung test and through calculation of the root mean squared error (RMSE).

Trabajo presentado en el 7th Iberian Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries, celebrado en Barcelona (España), del 1 al 3 de julio de 2019, Solid Oxide Elecyrolizers (SOEC) are electrochemical devises that produce hydrogen from water using the energy of an electric power source. SOEC operate at high temperatures (around 800ºC) and have efficiencies around 53% [1]. One of the most interesting scenarios of SOEC use is the storage of energy in hydrogen form when renewable power sources do not match the load. Because of this, it is important to study the dynamic behavior of SOEC systems in order to know their ability to adapt to changing power profiles. Different works describe SOEC models in the literature, as reviewed in [2], but time dependent models are scarse [3] and very few of the models are experimentally validated. This work presents a dy-namic model of a SOEC implemented in MATLAB Simulink and its match with experimental data. One important issue in SOEC stacks is hydrogen leak, which aggravates with ageing and is mostly caused by the high operating temperatures. The analysis of the experimental data of this work suggested hydrogen leak. Based on the SOEC thermal model, a methodology to quantify the flow of hydrogen that is leaked out is proposed and applied to the experimental system., This work was done with the support of ACCIÓ (Operational Program FEDER Catalunya 2014-2020) through the COSIN project (ref. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are a promising technology for substitution of hydrocarbon powerdrives and battery based electrical supply systems. However, below-required durability is still an important factor that hinders its widespread use, thus, novel operating approaches are required to surpass this shortcoming. The present abstract presents a line of research directed towards the of analysis and definition of load profile characteristics in order to design controllers and operation strategies that optimize cell efficiency and durability. Degradation of the catalyst layer, commonly composed of platinum supported on carbon (Pt/C), mainly due to platinum loss by oxidation/dissolution and the resulting reduction of Electrochemical Active Surface Area (ECSA), is the main issue reducing the durability of PEMFC.

Dynamic models of PEM stacks are the basis to design controllers for appropriate performance, maximum efficiency and minimum degradation. Fluid dynamic models of different dimensions can be found in the literature; however, these models are rarely used to improve the control laws and strategies. This work presents a control oriented 1+1D model (distributed in the direction of the stack flow channels). The model is based on a similar model presented by M. Mangold [1], is implemented in MATLAB Simulink. The model is validated using experimental data of a Powercell stack.

This work introduces our ongoing research in developing accurate models for predicting and analyzing Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells performance. An initial model, whose response is compared with experimental data is first implemented. The simulated (and theoretically expected) cell voltage deviates from real behavior when the operating conditions change. Then an improved model, aimed to better approximate instantaneous voltage response to changing operating conditions by including liquid water dynamics, is developed. The results show that the new model achieves a better approximation of the voltage profile. The model is validated through experiments on a real fuel cell test-bench.

The model is implemented in the MATLAB-Simulink visual programming software. The model was calibrated using experimental data. A strategy is proposed for the thermal management of the stack and a controller is designed to keep the operating temperature of the system constant. This implemented strategy and controller is evaluated through simulation. [ES]: En el presente trabajo se elabora un modelo dinámico con parámetros concentrados capaz de reproducir el comportamiento electroquímico y térmico de una pila de combustible de óxido sólido (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, SOFC). El modelo se implementa en el software de programación visual MATLAB-Simulink. Gracias a datos experimentales disponibles, se ajustan algunos de sus parámetros. Posteriormente a la elaboración del modelo, se propone una estrategia para la gestión térmica de la pila y se acaba diseñando un controlador que permite mantener constante la temperatura de operación del sistema. Trabajo presentado a las XXXV Jornadas de Automática celebradas en Valencia del 3 al 5 de septiembre de 2014., En este trabajo se analiza el modelo de una pila de combustible tipo PEM de cátodo abierto. Se caracterizan sus puntos de equilibrio. Se analiza el plano de fase del modelo alrededor de diferentes puntos de operación y se plantea una linearización del comportamiento del sistema. Finalmente se plantea un diseño basado en control robusto. Society is gradually becoming aware that the current energy industry, based on the use of fossil fuels, is inefficient, highly polluting and has a finite supply. Within the scientific community, there are indications that hydrogen (H2) as an energy vector, obtained from renewable energy sources, can represent a viable option to mitigate the problems associated with hydrocarbon combustion. In this context, the change from the current energy industry to a new structure with a significant involvement of H2 facilitates the introduction of fuel cells as elements of energy conversion. Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are gaining increased attention as viable energy conversion devices for a wide range of applications from automotive, stationary to portable. In order to optimize performance, these systems require active control and thus in-depth knowledge of the system dynamics which include fluid mechanics, thermal dynamics and reaction kinetics. One of the main issues, with respect to proper control of these systems, is the understanding of the water transport mechanisms through the membrane and the liquid water distribution. The thesis is based on the publication of nine international journal articles that are divided into 4 sub-topics: Dynamic fuel cell modeling, fuel cell system control-oriented analysis, identification of parameters and performance indicators and finally, fault and failure detection and system diagnosis. In the sub-topic of Dynamic Fuel cell modeling, experimentally validated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling is used to relate the effects of the physical phenomena associated with fluid mechanics and thermal dynamics, that occur inside the fuel cell [Alonso, 2009][Strahl, 2011], to water distribution. However, since these CFD models cannot be directly used for control, control-oriented models [Kunusch, 2008][Kunusch, 2011] have been developed in parallel. As well, another study is done in [Serra, 2006] which includes a controllability analysis of the system for future development and application of efficient controllers. The results of the above mentioned studies are limited because either they do not incorporate an electrochemical model or the model is not experimentally validated. Moreover, these models do not take into account the voltage losses due to liquid water inside the fuel cell. Therefore, there is a need to properly relate the relevant effects of fluid mechanics and thermal dynamics, including liquid water, to the fuel cell voltage. Primarily, methodologies are needed to determine the relevant indicators associated to the effect of water on the fuel cell performance. The works published in [Husar, 2008] and [Husar, 2011] treats experimental parameter identification, mainly focused on water transport through the membrane and fuel cell voltage loss indicators respectively. The implementation of the indicators indirect measurement methodology provides an experimental way for the isolation of three main types of voltage losses in the fuel cell: activation, mass transport and ohmic losses. Additionally since these voltage loss indicators relate the fuel cell operating conditions to the fuel cell voltage, they can be utilized to calibrate and validate CFD models as well as employed in novel control strategies. On the other hand, to develop reliable systems, the controller should not only take into account performance variables during standard operation but should also be able to detect failures and take the appropriate actions. A preliminary study on failure indicators is presented in [Husar 2007] and fault detection methodologies are described in [de Lira 2011]. As a whole, the compilation of articles represented in this thesis applies a comprehensive experimental approach which describes the implementation of novel methodologies and experimental procedures to characterize and model the PEMFC and their associated systems taking into consideration control oriented goals., La societat s'està adonant que la indústria energètica actual, basada en l'ús de combustibles fòssils, és ineficient, molt contaminant i té un subministrament limitat. Dins de la comunitat científica, hi ha indicis que el hidrogen (H2) com vector energètic, obtingut a partir de fonts d'energia renovables, pot representar una opció viable per a mitigar els problemes associats amb la combustió d'hidrocarburs. En aquest context, el canvi de la indústria energètica actual a una nova estructura amb una important participació de el hidrogen exigeix la introducció de les piles de combustible com elements de conversió d'energia. Les piles de combustible de membrana polimèrica (PEMFC) estan tenint cada vegada més atenció com a dispositius viables de conversió d'energia per a una àmplia gamma d'aplicacions com automoció, estacionàries o portàtils. Amb la finalitat d'optimitzar el seu rendiment, les piles PEM requereixen un control actiu i per tant un coneixement profund de la dinàmica del sistema, que inclou la mecànica de fluids, la dinàmica tèrmica i la cinètica de les reaccions. Un dels temes principals relacionat amb el control adequat d'aquests sistemes és la comprensió dels mecanismes de transport d'aigua a través de la membrana i la distribució d'aigua líquida. Aquesta tesi es basa en nou articles publicats en revistes internacionals que es divideixen en 4 subtemes: la modelització dinàmica de piles de combustible, l'anàlisi orientada al control del sistema, la identificació de paràmetres i d’indicadors de funcionament i, finalment, la detecció de fallades i la diagnosi dels sistemes. En el sub-tema de la modelització dinàmica de piles PEM, la modelització basada en la Dinàmica de Fluids Computacional (CFD) amb validació experimental s'ha utilitzat per a relacionar els efectes dels fenòmens físics de la mecànica de fluids i de la dinàmica tèrmica que es produeixen dintre de la pila [Alonso, 2009] [ Strahl, 2011] amb la distribució d'aigua. No obstant això, com aquests models CFD no poden ser utilitzats directament per al control, s'han desenvolupat models orientats a control [Kunusch, 2008] [Kunusch, 2011] en paral·lel. A més, en un altre estudi [Serra, 2006] s'inclou una anàlisi de control·labilitat del sistema per al desenvolupament i aplicació futurs de controladors eficaços. Però els resultats dels estudis esmentats anteriorment són limitats, ja sigui perquè no incorporen un model electroquímic o bé perquè no han estat validats experimentalment. A més, cap dels models té en compte les pèrdues de tensió degudes a l'aigua líquida dins de la pila de combustible. Per tant, hi ha una necessitat de relacionar adequadament els efectes rellevants de la mecànica de fluids i de la dinàmica tèrmica, incloent l'aigua líquida, amb el voltatge de la pila de combustible. Principalment, són necessàries metodologies per a determinar els indicadors rellevants associats a aquest efecte de l'aigua sobre el rendiment de la pila de combustible. Els treballs publicats en [Husar, 2008] i [Husar, 2011] tracten la identificació experimental de paràmetres, centrada en el transport d'aigua a través de la membrana i els indicadors de pèrdua de tensió, respectivament. L'aplicació d'una proposta de metodologia de mesura indirecte dels indicadors permet l'aïllament dels tres tipus principals de pèrdues de voltatge en la pila de combustible: l'activació, el transport de massa i les pèrdues ohmiques. Aquests indicadors de pèrdua de tensió relacionen les condicions d'operació amb el voltatge de la pila de combustible i per tant poden ser utilitzats per a calibrar i validar models CFD, així com per a definir noves estratègies de control. D'altra banda, per a aconseguir sistemes fiables, el controlador no només ha de considerar els indicadors de funcionament de l'operació normal, sinó que també ha de detectar possibles fallades per a poder prendre les accions adequades en cas de fallada. Un estudi preliminar sobre indicadors de fallades es presenta en [Husar 2007] i una metodologia de detecció de fallades completa es descriu en [Lira de 2011]. En el seu conjunt, el compendi d'articles que formen aquesta tesi segueix un enfocament experimental i descriu la implementació de noves metodologies i procediments experimentals per a la caracterització i el modelatge de piles PEM i els sistemes associats amb objectius orientats al control eficient d'aquests sistemes., La sociedad se ésta dando cuenta de que la industria energética actual, basada en el uso de combustibles fósiles, es ineficiente, muy contaminante y tiene un suministro limitado. Dentro de la comunidad científica, hay indicios de que el hidrógeno (H2) como vector energético, obtenido a partir de fuentes de energía renovables, puede representar una opción viable para mitigar los problemas asociados con la combustión de hidrocarburos. En este contexto, el cambio de la industria energética actual a una nueva estructura con una importante participación de H2 exige la introducción de pilas de combustible como elementos de conversión de energía. Las pilas de combustible de membrana polimérica (PEMFC) están ganando cada vez más atención como dispositivos viables de conversión de energía para una amplia gama de aplicaciones como automoción, estacionarias o portátiles. Con el fin de optimizar su rendimiento, las pilas PEM requieren un control activo y por lo tanto un conocimiento profundo de la dinámica del sistema, que incluye la mecánica de fluidos, la dinámica térmica y la cinética de las reacciones. Uno de los temas principales relacionado con el control adecuado de estos sistemas, es la comprensión de los mecanismos de transporte de agua a través de la membrana y la distribución de agua líquida. Esta tesis se basa en la publicación de nueve artículos en revistas internacionales que se dividen en 4 sub-temas: el modelado dinámico de pilas de combustible, el análisis orientado a control del sistema, la identificación de parámetros e indicadores de desempeño y, por último, la detección de fallos y la diagnosis. En el sub-tema de la modelización dinámica de pilas PEM, el modelado basado en Dinámica de Fluidos Computacional (CFD) con validación experimental se ha utilizado para relacionar los efectos de los fenómenos físicos de la mecánica de fluidos y la dinámica térmica que se producen dentro de la pila [Alonso, 2009] [ Strahl, 2011] con la distribución de agua. Sin embargo, como estos modelos CFD no pueden ser utilizados directamente para el control, modelos orientados a control [Kunusch, 2008] [Kunusch, 2011] se han desarrollado en paralelo. Además, en otro estudio [Serra, 2006] se incluye un análisis de controlabilidad del sistema para el futuro desarrollo y aplicación de controladores eficaces. Pero los resultados de los estudios mencionados anteriormente son limitados, ya sea porque no incorporan un modelo electroquímico o bien porque no son validados experimentalmente. Además, ninguno de los modelos tiene en cuenta las pérdidas de tensión debidas al agua líquida dentro de la pila de combustible. Por lo tanto, hay una necesidad de relacionar adecuadamente los efectos relevantes de la mecánica de fluidos y la dinámica térmica, incluyendo el agua líquida, con la tensión de la pila de combustible. Principalmente, son necesarias metodologías para determinar los indicadores relevantes asociados al efecto del agua sobre el rendimiento de la pila de combustible. Los trabajos publicados en [Husar, 2008] y [Husar, 2011] tratan la identificación experimental de parámetros, centrada en el transporte de agua a través de la membrana y los indicadores de pérdida de tensió, respectivamente. La aplicación de una metodología propuesta de medición indirecta de los indicadores permite el aislamiento de los tres tipos principales de pérdidas de tensión en la pila de combustible: la activación, el transporte de masa y las pérdidas óhmicas. Éstos indicadores de pérdida de tensión relacionan las condiciones de operación con la tensión de la pila de combustible y por lo tanto pueden ser utilizados para calibrar y validar modelos CFD, así como para definir nuevas estrategias de control. Por otro lado, para conseguir sistemas fiables, el controlador no sólo debe considerar los indicadores de desempeño de la operación regular, sino que también debe detectar posibles fallos para poder tomar las acciones adecuadas en caso de fallo. Un estudio preliminar sobre indicadores de fallos se presenta en [Husar 2007] y una metodología de detección de fallos completa se describe en [Lira de 2011]. En su conjunto, el compendio de artículos que forman esta tesis sigue un enfoque experimental y describe la implementación de nuevas metodologías y procedimientos experimentales para la caracterización y el modelado de pilas PEM y los sistemas asociados con objetivos orientados al control eficiente de estos sistemas.

Presentado al III Iberian Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries celebrado en Zaragoza del 27 al 30 de junio de 2011., Utilizando las últimas innovaciones en las tecno-logias de pilas de combustible y en el de almacenamiento de hidrogeno disponibles en el mercado, en este trabajo se pretende equiparar las prestaciones de un prototipo a las de un robot autónomo basado en la plataforma Segway RMP200. Mediante la utilización de pilas PEM el sistema pretende satisfacer las actuales prestaciones que ofrecen las baterías del vehículo Segway y proporcionar diferentes niveles de alimentación a los dis-positivos del robot (230VAC para PCs, 24VDC y 12VD para sensores y motores, 5VDC), los cuales son equiparables a los consumos de la propulsión del robot., Subvencionado con el proyecto CICYT DPI2010-15274 del Gobierno de España.

Presentado al III Iberian Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries celebrado en Zaragoza del 27 al 30 de junio de 2011., For the past 20 years remarkable progress has been made in PEM fuel cell materials, component design, production, and system power density improvements. However, there is still a lot to be done in the field of fuel cell system control, which makes it essential to understand the different physical phenomena within a working fuel cell and how they need to be controlled in order to improve efficiency, operating range and durability. This experimental study analyses the effects of ambient conditions, through the use of an environmental chamber, on a Horizon® H-100 20 cell stack, 22cm2 active area, open cathode, where the only active control mechanism employed is a single fan that both, cools and provides the oxygen needed for the reaction. All the other control mechanisms are disconnected and a constant dry pure hydrogen flow rate of 1.8 SLPM is supplied to the stack., This work is partially fund-ed by the project of CICYT DPI2010-15274 MICINN.

En este trabajo se presenta un modelo dinámico de una pila de combustible tipo PEM comercial (Ballard Nexa 1.2 kW) así como la calibración experimental de sus parámetros a partir de dados reales de laboratorio. La calibración se realiza resolviendo el problema de ajuste de datos de un sistema real (datos de laboratorio) utilizando un proceso de optimización por mínimos-cuadrados no-lineales.. Finalmente, se ha implementado un simulador a partir del modelo calibrado experimentalmente que ha permitido contrastar la bondad del modelo comparándolo con el comportamiento real del sistema.

En este trabajo se presenta el modelado de un sistema generador de energía basado en pilas de combustible PEM mediante un modelo variante con el punto de operación (modelo LPV). Dicho modelo ha sido obtenido mediante la linealización del modelo dinámico no lineal que ha sido previamente calibrado con datos reales de laboratorio. El modelo LPV obtenido está pensado para ser utilizado en el diseño de controladores y algoritmos de diagnóstico de fallos basados en modelos.

4 páginas, 4 figuras.-- Trabajo presentado al IV Congreso Nacional de Pilas de Combustible celebrado en Sevilla (España) del 16 al 18 de Junio de 2010., [EN]: Water distribution in a fuel cell affects performance and durability, thus fundamental understanding of water transport mechanisms are imperative and can be strongly influenced through proper control strategies. A two-dimensional, non-isothermal, dynamic model of an open cathode, self-humidified PEMFC was developed. The model consists of three sub models using on energy, momentum and water mass balance of the system with respect to an anode, cathode channel, diffusion layers and MEA. The model is intended to be used to simulate and study the effects of water transport/distribution and its influence on the system performance to develop new water management control strategies. Essential coefficients for water transport, namely the water diffusion, EOD, and bulk specific heat capacity coefficients, have been determined experimentally. The effective water diffusion coefficient was determined to be 3.3×10−8m2 s−1 at 30ºC and increases by 3×10−10m2 s−1 per degree until 50ºC. The EOD coefficient was found to be 0.47 to 0.48 water molecules per proton at stack currents from 0.044 to 0.133Acm−2. The bulk specific heat capacity for one cell unit was determined to be 1260Jkg−1K−1. The model has been validated by using experimental data directly obtained from laboratory tests., [ES]: La distribución del agua en una PEMFC afecta su comportamiento y durabilidad, por tanto la comprensión de los mecanismos fundamentales del transporte del agua es imperativa y pueden ser fuertemente influenciados mediante estrategias apropiadas de control. Se ha desarrollado un modelo dinámico, no isotérmico, bidimensional de una PEMFC autohumidificada y de cátodo abierto. El modelo consta de tres submodelos usando el balance de energía, el balance de flujos y el balance másico de agua en el sistema, referidos al ánodo, cátodo, capas de difusión y la MEA. El modelo ha sido desarrollado para ser utilizado en la simulación y el estudio de los efectos del transporte y la distribución del agua en la pila y su influencia en el funcionamiento del sistema a fin de desarrollar nuevas estrategias de control. In this paper, a model-based fault diagnosis methodology for PEM fuel cell systems is presented. The methodology is based on computing residuals using an LPV observer. Sensor fault detection faces the problem of robustness using adaptive thresholds generated with interval observer. Fault isolation is performed using the Euclidean distance between the observed relative residuals and theoretical relative sensitivities. To illustrate the results, a commercial fuel cell Ballard Nexa© is used in simulation where a set of typical fault scenarios have been considered. Finally, the diagnosis results corresponding to those fault scenarios are presented. It is remarkable that with this methodology it is possible to diagnose all the considered faults in contrast with other well known methodologies which use the classic binary signature matrix approach.

In the context of fuel cell stack control a mayor challenge is modeling the interdependence of various complex subsystem dynamics. In many cases, the states interaction is usually modeled through several look-up tables, decision blocks and piecewise continuous functions. Many internal variables are inaccessible for measurement and cannot be used in control algorithms. To make significant contributions in this area, it is necessary to develop reliable models for control and design purposes. In this paper, a linear model based on experimental identification of a 7-cell stack was developed. The procedure followed to obtain a linear model of the system consisted in performing spectroscopy tests of four different single-input single-output subsystems. The considered inputs for the tests were the stack current and the cathode oxygen flow rate, while the measured outputs were the stack voltage and the cathode total pressure. The resulting model can be used either for model-based control design or for on-line analysis and errors detection.

Resumen: En el presente trabajo se desarrolla un modelo dinámico apto para el diseño de control de un sistema de celdas de combustible experimental tipo PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane). El sistema bajo análisis está basado fundamentalmente en una pila ElectroChem de 7 celdas alimentada por un compresor de aire e hidrógeno presurizado, humidificadores de aire e hidrógeno y válvulas reguladoras de presión. Se modela el sistema completo a partir de subsistemas acoplados, utilizando una combinación entre estructuras teóricas y análisis prácticos. Finalmente, se valida el modelo a partir de datos experimentales.

The effective water vapor diffusion coefficient and its dynamical variation for the stack under no load conditions will be determined for the purpose of isolating the transfer of water across the 5 layer MEA (which include the two gas diffusion layers the two catalysts layers and the membrane) in relation to temperature and membrane resistance. This coefficient is dependent on the material properties of the components in the fuel cell, as well as on the membrane temperature and water content. The dynamics of the membrane temperature and water content will be established experimentally. The controlled variables in this experiment are the water vapor partial pressures at the inlets and the temperature of the fuel cell. Experimental procedure is to independently vary the water vapor partial pressures and fuel cell temperature to obtain the water transport across the membrane, membrane resistance, and total resistance. The experimental setup for this study is based on a 21 cell PEMFC stack with a forced flow open cathode. An environmental chamber controls the fuel cell temperature and the inlet dew point temperature of the cathode reactant. The anode reactant inlet water vapor partial pressure is maintained by a membrane based humidifier which is controlled with a dew point sensor. The measured variables are the outlet dew point temperatures, membrane resistance through continual high frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and total resistance through full frequency spectrum EIS at steady state conditions. The study determines the in situ effective diffusion coefficient and membrane resistance from 10ºC to 70ºC and 10% to 100% relative humidity. This work presents analysis of water transport phenomena in the 120 Wel high temperature PEM fuel cell stack. Phosphoric acid doped PBI membranes are known for their abilities to work with dry gases; however water in the electrolyte still plays an integral role in the proton conduction mechanism. The presence of water in the membrane increases proton conductivity, however at high operating temperatures in the anhydrous environment phosphoric acid can dehydrate consequently lowering its conductivity. Therefore, understanding of water transport in the PBI- H3PO4 membranes is important as it can explain certain phenomena inside the cell. Tests have shown that water transport from cathode to anode due to water accumulation rises almost linearly with current density while decreases with cathode stoichiometry. Water transport seems to be independent of operating temperature. Also, in some cases, reverse flow water transport (from anode to cathode) appears to take place near the outlet. Ohmic resistance was also found to decrease slightly with an increase in current density and lower stoichiometries.

This work presents the development of a nonlinear state observer to estimate the values of the different gas species concentration profiles in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) energy system. The selection of the estimated states is based on the functionality and performance of the observer. The implementation is based on the discretization of a PEMFC distributed 1+1D model. Forward and backwards discretization of the partial derivative equations is performed to take advantage of the boundary conditions of the problem. A second-order sliding-mode control super-twisting corrective input action is implemented to reduce the estimation error to zero in a finite amount of time. Simulation results are presented to show the performance of the observer to estimate the values of the states and to extract conclusions for future research work.// Este trabajo presenta el desarrollo de un observador de estados no lineal para la estimación de los perfiles de concentraciones en un sistema de energía basado en una Pila de Combustible de Membrana de Intercambio Protónico (PEMFC). La selección desempeño del observador. Las ecuaciones en derivadas parciales son discretizadas en dos sentidos un modelo 1+1D para aprovechar las condiciones de contorno del problema. Una acción de en métodos deslizantes de segundo orden es implementada para reducir el error de estimación a cero en un periodo finito de tiempo. Se presentan resultados de simulación para mostrar el rendimiento del observador reconstrucción de los valores de los estados y para extraer conclusiones para futuro trabajo de investigación.

The main contribution of this work is the improvement of the efficiency of a PEMFC power system while guaranteeing conditions that also improve its durability. Adopting the NMPC scheme with the distributed parameter model and the nonlinear observer, the efficiency of the PEMFC-based system can be maximized guaranteeing at the same time the appropriate internal gas concentration profiles to avoid global and local hydrogen and oxygen starvation and proper membrane humidification.

In this paper, a nonlinear distributed parameter observer (NDOP) is developed for the estimation of the internal condi-tions of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In particular, the estimation of the internal concentration values for different gas species is studied. A novel high order sliding mode (HOSM) estimation technique, based on a distributed parameter model of a PEMFC is developed to reconstruct the internal variables. The observer includes the estimation of the reaction and water transport terms, which are considered as disturbances of the PEMFC estimation model. Since the approach is based on a distributed parameter model representation of the PEMFC, the observer is capable of reconstruct the full internal profile of the estimated variables. The performance and robustness of the proposed observation technique is tested through a simulation example around different operation points.

Presentado a la 5th International Conference on Fundamentals & Developments of Fuel Cells celebrada en Karlsruhe (Alemania) del 16 al 18 de abril de 2013., The work presented in this article combines experimental analysis and theoretical studies of temperature effects on the performance of an open-cathode, self-humidified PEM fuel cell system for the design of optimization strategies. The experimental analysis shows the great potential of improving the system performance by proper temperature management. The most significant temperature dependent parameters of the system under study are the activation polarization and the water content of the ionomer of the catalyst layer. An Extremum seeking control algorithm is proposed to regulate the temperature to a voltage maximum. La UPC está construyendo un laboratorio autónomo de hidrógeno en el campus del Besós. Estas instalaciones están provistas de electrolizadores para producir su propio hidrógeno a partir de la electricidad generada por un sistema fotovoltaico, así como de la red. El objetivo de esta tesis es elaborar un algoritmo capaz de controlar los elementos del sistema para asegurar el abastecimiento de hidrógeno del laboratorio, a la vez que minimice tanto la degradación de los elementos del sistema, como los costes económicos. Este algoritmo se ha desarrollado en Matlab siguiendo una estructura de decisiones lógicas con forma de árbol de decisiones. Para comprobar la efectividad del algoritmo, se han realizado simulaciones variando la potencia fotovoltaica producida, los perfiles de demanda de hidrógeno y el hidrógeno almacenado al inicio de la simulación The UPC is building an autonomous hydrogen laboratory in the Besós campus. In order to produce its own hydrogen, these installations contain electrolizers fueled by a photovoltaic system and by the electrical grid. The objective of this thesis is to create an algorithm able to control the elements of the system in order to ensure the supply of hydrogen for the laboratory while minimizing the degradation of the different elements and the economical cost. The algorithm has been developed in Matlab following logical choices and shaped as a decision tree. Un robot ha de poder ser capaç de tractar i manipular un gran nombre d’objectes dins d’una casa, ja siguin rígids o deformables Entre aquests objectes habituals en una llar hi ha les peces de roba, les quals presenten una alta complexitat de categorització a causa de la dificultat en modelitzar els possibles estats en els que es poden trobar (potencialment infinits degut a la seva deformabilitat) per a tasques com ara guardar la roba, plegar, allisar o simplement transportar d’un punt a l’altre. Aquest treball presenta una metodologia per a discernir, a partir d’una imatge, l’existència d’un pantaló, i la seva classificació en quatre estats preestablerts, separant aquests entre pantalons que es troben completament de dins cap a fora o amb el costat correcte cap enfora, i determinant si la peça es troba cap per amunt o cap per avall. Els resultats obtinguts demostren un mètode eficaç i ràpid per a la seva classificació, observant les diferents problemàtiques i aportant un conjunt de solucions i millores aplicables per a treballs futurs., [EN] Assistive robots address a large number of problems that require a solution to help, with the maximum flexibility, the user. A robot must be able to treat and manipulate a large number of objects inside a house, whether they are rigid or deformable. Among such objects there are garments, which have a high complexity of categorization due to the difficulty to model the possible states (potentially infinite, due to their deformability) in which they can be found for tasks such as storing clothes, folding, smoothing, or simply transporting them from one point to the other. This work presents a methodology to discern, from an image, the existence of pants, and their classification in four pre-established states, separating these between pants that are completely inside-out or right-side out and determining whether the pieces are facing upwards or downwards. The results obtained demonstrate an effective and fast method for classification, observing the different problems, and providing a set of solutions and improvements applicable for future work. [ES] La robótica de asistencia doméstica conlleva un gran número de problemáticas que requieren una solución para atender, con la máxima flexibilidad, al usuario. Un robot debe poder ser capaz de tratar y manipular un gran número de objetos dentro de una casa, ya sean rígidos o deformables. Entre estos objetos se encuentran las prendas de vestir, las cuales presentan una alta complejidad de categorización debido a la dificultad en modelizar los posibles estados (potencialmente infinitos debido a su deformabilidad) en los que se pueden encontrar para tareas como guardar la ropa, plegar, alisar o simplemente transportarla de un punto a otro. Este trabajo presenta una metodología para discernir, a partir de una imagen, la existencia de un pantalón, y su clasificación en cuatro estados preestablecidos, separando estos entre pantalones que se encuentran completamente de dentro hacia fuera o con el lado correcto, exterior, hacia afuera, y determinando si la pieza se encuentra boca arriba o boca abajo. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran un método eficaz y rápido para su clasificación, observando las diferentes problemáticas y aportando un conjunto de soluciones y mejoras aplicables para trabajos futuros.

Les microxarxes energètiques necessiten de tècniques de control especialitzades per a poder operar de manera eficient, tant en termes econòmics com tècnics. Una de les tècniques que més s'ha desenvolupat últimament és la tecnologia MPC. L'objectiu de la present tesi és elaborar una estratègia de control predictiu per a controlar la planta pilot que proveirà d'hidrogen al laboratori d'hidrogen del campus Besós de la UPC. S'ha realitzat una recerca de l'estat de l'art actual i s'ha desenvolupat un model MPC, el qual es contrasta amb un esquema de control de regles lògiques, basat en els nivells de pressió dels tancs. El model emprat per a definir els elements és lineal i amb la condició de definir el comportament d'estats dels electrolizadors i del compressor s'empra la formulació MLD. Es realitzen simulacions representatives de setmanes dels diferents períodes estacionals anuals variant el nivell de potència fotovoltaica instal·lada. Després de realitzar les simulacions, es conclou que la tècnica MPC ofereix múltiples avantatges respecte al control per regles lògiques, tant en estalvi econòmic a causa d'una millor gestió dels equips com en una millora operativa de la pròpia planta Las microrredes energéticas necesitan de técnicas de control especializadas para poder operar de forma eficiente, tanto en términos económicos como técnicos. Una de las técnicas que más se ha desarrollado últimamente es la tecnología MPC. El objetivo de la presente tesis es elaborar una estrategia de control predictivo para controlar la planta piloto que abastecerá de hidrógeno al laboratorio de hidrógeno del campus Besós de la UPC. Se ha realizado una investigación del estado del arte actual y se ha desarrollado un modelo MPC, el cual se contrasta con un esquema de control de reglas lógicas, basado en los niveles de presión de los tanques. El modelo empleado para definir los elementos es lineal y con tal de definir el comportamiento de estados de los electrolizadores y del compresor se emplea la formulación MLD. Se realizan simulaciones representativas de semanas de los diferentes periodos estacionales anuales variando el nivel de potencia fotovoltaica instalada. Tras realizar las simulaciones, se concluye que la técnica MPC ofrece múltiples ventajas respecto al control por reglas lógicas, tanto en ahorro económico debido a una mejor gestión de los equipos cómo en una mejora operativa de la propia planta Energy microgrids require specialized control techniques in order to operate efficiently, both in economic and technical terms. One of the techniques that has been developed the most lately is Model Predictive Control (MPC) technology. The objective of this thesis is to develop a predictive control strategy to control the pilot plant that will supply hydrogen to the hydrogen laboratory of the Besós campus of the UPC. An investigation of the current state of the art has been carried out and an MPC model has been developed, which is contrasted with a control scheme of logical rules, based on the pressure levels of the tanks. The model used to define the elements is linear and to define the behavior of the states of the electrolyzers and the compressor, the Mixed Logical and Dynamical (MLD) formulation is used. Representative simulations of weeks of the different annual seasonal periods are carried out and varying the level of installed photovoltaic power. Este proyecto trata de implementar una celda de combustible basada en una membrana intercambiadora de protones sobre una plataforma robótica ya existente. La idea de este proyecto es hacer un estudio para sustituir la alimentación actual de un robot con una celda de combustible, para así tener las ventajas que proporciona. Estas ventajas son un sistema más limpio, ya que necesita hidrógeno más el oxígeno del aire mismo para sólo dar como producto agua, también disminuye el tiempo de carga del robot ya que con las baterías este tiempo es mucho más extenso. Una celda de combustible hace que solo se necesite el tiempo de recarga del hidrógeno, que es menor que en baterías, además de poder hacer jornadas más largas sin tener que recargar. Además, se ha querido hacer un sistema modular, para que así se pueda quitar y poner este sistema según las necesidades, como también ser aprovechado para otros proyectos. En esta memoria se pueden encontrar explicaciones de los componentes básicos de este proyecto, que han sido la celda de combustible, la batería y las bombonas de hidrógeno. Como se ve, el sistema no sólo se basa en la celda de combustible, sino que se ha querido hacer un sistema híbrido con una batería, que se recarga con la propia celda de combustible, así no hay que parar a recargarla. Todo esto se ha calculado para dimensionarlo correctamente y así escoger los componentes con las capacidades correctas. Se ha hecho un análisis exhaustivo con datos obtenidos de unas pruebas que se hicieron con el robot al principio del proyecto. Se han planteado tres casos distintos con datos modificados para así poder estudiar distintas opciones, ya que por la situación actual no se han podido tener más pruebas con el robot. Dentro de estos tres casos, se han estudiado, además, tres casos de hibridación distintos, en función de cuánto trabajan la celda de combustible y la batería en cada momento. Así, se ha podido elegir uno de los casos más exigentes, para dimensionar correctamente el sistema. Finalmente, se ha hecho un estudio de los costes de cada caso, para también tenerlo en cuenta en la decisión final.

The main objective of this work is to develop a software tool to perform an techno-economic feasibility analysis of cogeneration systems for electricity and heat production, based on fuel cell technology (FC-CHP). The software tool should provide useful information to the decision makers. Moreover, the developed software will be applied to specific case studies to obtain the main indicators of the economic viability of the system. A FC-CHP system is a technology with potential to change the current paradigm, which consists in obtaining electricity from the power grid and, separately, heat through gas boilers. The method developed in this study allows to carry out a viability analysis over a specific time horizon, based on technical and economic parameters, to size the FC-CHP system and to adapt the calculations to the market conditions of each case study. It is important to consider the market conditions, because the previous works found in the literature remark that the viability of the FC-CHP technology depends on specific factors that vary by country and region. Local economic factors include government policies to support new technologies of distributed generation, that is, generation of electricity at or near where it will be used. Another local factor is the difference in prices between natural gas and electricity ("spark spread"), and the expected evolution of these prices. From the environmental point of view, the composition of the country's power generation mix has influence on the emissions reduction using FC-CHP. The pattern of thermal and electrical energy demand of each specific case also influence, and the relative amount of each one (heat-to-power ratio). The method developed requires a source of energy consumption data, which can be real or simulated. Special attention has been paid to see the impact of few consumption data in the results. A correction has to be made in the results for those situations when only the aggregate monthly or weekly consumption is available for analysis. From heat and electricity consumption data, a Matlab/Simulink model is used to calculate the amount of fuel needed so that the SOFC-CHP system can meet the demand, the amount of thermal energy that should be provided by an additional system (a conventional condensing boiler), as well as the electrical energy to be imported or exported from the electricity grid. The annual results are extrapolated to a time horizon of 10 years, to validate the economic viability of the project. Different operation modes (disconnected or connected to power grid) and operation strategies (heat-driven, power-driven, maximum-driven) of the SOFC-CHP system are analyzed in buildings of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya with varied heat-to-power 4 Memòria ratios, to determine the strategy that best suits each case. The results show that the high initial investment is one of the main obstacles to obtain a return on the investment in a reasonable time. However, the cogeneration system is economically viable in some of the studied cases, especially if the building has a heat to power ratio greater than one. The evolution of energy prices also greatly influences in the viability of the project. As for the operation strategies, those following maximum demand and those following electricity demand offer better results than the strategy that follows the thermal demand, because the former cases use the fuel cell throughout the year and can take more advantage of cogeneration.

Les piles d’hidrogen permeten obtenir energia elèctrica de forma eficient a partir d’hidrogen i poden ser unelement clau per a implementar sistemes energètics renovables, distribuïts i autònoms, facilitant una transició cap a un model energètic sostenible. Amb aquesta finalitat es crea el projecte REFER, un projecte integrat a la comunitat RIS3CAT-ENERGIA de Catalunya. L’objectiu principal del projecte és el desenvolupament de piles d’hidrogen que es puguin alimentar amb gas natural de la xarxa i proporcionar electricitat a edificis. Amb aquest objectiu s’elegeixen piles SOFC (d’alta temperatura) alimentades ambhidrogen mitjançant un reformador de gas metà amb vapor.Per a implementar el disseny de planta és necessari desenvolupar un model que simuli el seu funcionament i aquesta és la intenció d’aquest treball. Per a plantejar-ho, es divideix la planta en els elements que la componen i es modelen individualment per a la seva posterior unió. Aquest model hauria de poder preveure el funcionament de la planta en diferents condicions de treball i per tant permetre el seu disseny òptim i unsistema de control. Per areproduir la dinàmica dels elements de la planta s’utilitza el Simulink, una extensió del programa matemàtic Matlab que permet generar models matemàtics i interconnectar-los. Aquests models es basen en les lleis fisicoquímiques que regulen els components del sistema. Aquestes equacions i elseu comportament prové de diversos articles, alguns de piles d’hidrogen en general i d’altres específics sobre les SOFC.Com a resultat, s’ha aconseguit ajustar i adaptar el model de la pila SOFC als resultats experimentals de manera que es modela de forma prou exactala variació de voltatge amb la temperatura. Quantal reformador, el model creat és complet,però no s’assoleixen els fluxos d’hidrogen necessaris per a completar el disseny de planta.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which use hydrogen as fuel, provide high power densities while operating at lower temperatures, reducing the cost of materials and maintenance. PEM fuel cells are suitable for a broad range of applications, such as stationary, combined heat and power (CHP), portable systems and automotive. Performance and degradation in PEM fuel cell-based systems is greatly influenced by the internal conditions of the fuel cell. In this doctoral thesis, an extensive study of modelling, observation and control strategies of a PEM fuel cell-based system is performed. The objective is to obtain advanced control solutions that aid to enhance the durability and improve the efficiency of fuel cells. These control solutions have to take into account the internal conditions of the fuel cell and use this information to operate the system under conditions that guarantee that the degradation rate of the fuel cell is not increased. At the same time, the controllers have to guarantee that the system achieves high efficiencies, considering the parasitic power consumption of the balance of plant (BoP) ancillaries. The observation and control solutions are evaluated using the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) profile as a case study. The first part of the thesis introduces the motivation of the present work and the structure of the document. Additionally, the current state of the research regarding modelling, state observers and control strategies for PEM fuel cell-based systems are studied in detail. After the study of the state of the art, the objectives of this doctoral work are presented. The second part of the thesis is focused on the development, implementation and study in a simulation environment of a PEM fuel cell-based system model. The model considers spatial derivatives for the fuel cell in order to represent the internal dynamic behaviour, which affects the efficiency and degradation rate of the system. In this thesis, a special attention is given to the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). The ECSA in the cathode catalyst layer (CCL) is modelled using a twophase water model at the cathode side of the fuel cell to better represent its effect on the output voltage. The BoP ancillaries are considered as a parasitic power consumption that has to be delivered by the fuel cell. The most relevant parasitic power consumption is that of the compressor, which is modelled to include its dynamic behaviour in the control strategies. Once the model equations are presented, model-based nonlinear distributed parameters observers (NDPO) are developed in the third part of the thesis. First, the partial differential equations (PDE) of the PEM fuel cell-based system are discretised and reformulated to obtain the observation model. Using this model, two novel sliding mode control (SMC) approaches for the observation of the internal conditions of the fuel cell are presented and compared, using the NEDC current profile as the case study for the simulations. The fourth part of the thesis is devoted to model-based predictive control of the PEM fuel cell-based system. In particular, a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) strategy is proposed to improve the efficiency and at the same time, enhance the lifetime of the fuel cell. The use of the NDPOs in the control scheme facilitates critical information about the internal conditions of the fuel cell. This allows to design advanced control objectives that would not be achievable if using only the limited measurements that are available in PEM fuel cell-based systems. A multi-objective cost function that can prioritise between the different objectives of the controller during the optimisation procedure is designed. Finally, a discussion of the results obtained comparing different prioritisation between control objectives is provided. The fifth and last part of the thesis is devoted to extract conclusions., Las pilas de combustible de membrana de intercambio protónico (PEM), las cuales utilizan hidrógeno como combustible, proporcionan altas densidades de potencia operando a bajas temperaturas, reduciéndose el coste de los materiales y el mantenimiento. Las pilas de combustible de tipo PEM son apropiadas para un amplio rango de aplicaciones, tales como estacionarias, de ciclo combinado (CHP), sistemas portátiles y automoción. El rendimiento y la degradación en sistemas basados en pilas de combustible de tipo PEM están importantemente influenciados por las condiciones internas. En la presente tesis doctoral, se realiza un extenso estudio de modelado y estrategias de observación y control en un sistema basado en pila de combustible de tipo PEM. El objetivo es obtener soluciones avanzadas de control que ayuden en la mejora de la durabilidad e incrementar la eficiencia de las pilas de combustible. Dichas soluciones de control tienen que tener en cuenta las condiciones internas de la pila de combustible, y utilizar esta información para operar el sistema bajo condiciones que garanticen que la degradación del sistema no se incrementa. Al mismo tiempo, los controladores deben garantizar que el sistema alcanza altas eficiencias, considerando las pérdidas por consumos parasíticos de los auxiliares del balance de la planta (BoP). Las soluciones de observación y control son evaluadas utilizando el perfil de conducción New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). La primera parte de la tesis introduce la motivación tras el presente trabajo y la estructura del documento. Se estudia en detalle el estado actual de la investigación referente a modelado, observadores de estados y estrategias de control para sistemas basados en pilas de combustible. Tras este estudio del estado del arte, se presentan los objetivos de la tesis. La segunda parte de la tesis está enfocada en el desarrollo, implementación y estudio en un entorno de simulación de un modelo de sistema basado en pila de combustible de tipo PEM. El modelo considera derivadas espaciales para representar el comportamiento de la dinámica interna de la pila. Dicha dinámica interna afecta la eficiencia y el grado de degradación del sistema. En la presente tesis, la degradación de la capa catalizadora se ve reflejada en la pérdida de área de la superficie electroquímicamente activa (ECSA). La ECSA en la capa catalizadora del cátodo (CCL) se modela utilizando un modelo bifásico de agua en el lado catódico de la pila, con el objeto de representar fielmente su efecto en el voltaje de salida. Una vez que las ecuaciones del modelo son presentadas, observadores no-lineales de parámetros distribuidos (NDPO) basados en modelo se desarrollan en la tercera parte del presente trabajo. Primero, las ecuaciones en derivadas parciales (PDE) de la pila de combustible de tipo PEM son discretizadas y reformuladas para obtener el modelo de observación. Utilizando este modelo, se presentan y comparan dos novedosos enfoques de control por modos deslizantes (SMC) para la observación de las condiciones internas de la pila de combustible. La cuarta parte de la presente tesis está dedicada al control predictivo basado en modelos del sistema de pila de combustible de tipo PEM. En particular, se propone una estrategia de controlador predictivo no-lineal basado en modelo (NMPC) para la mejora de la eficiencia y a la vez, la mejora del ciclo de vida de la pila de combustible. El uso de los NDPOs en el esquema de control suministra información crítica acerca de las condiciones internas en la pila de combustible. Este hecho permite el diseño de objetivos de control avanzados que no serían realizables utilizando únicamente las limitadas mediciones que están disponibles en los sistemas basados en pilas de combustible de tipo PEM. La quinta y última parte de la tesis está dedicada a la extracción de conclusiones.

Màster en Enginyeria de l’Energia., [EN]: The highly increasing energy demand and reduction of available fossil energy sources have made it important to develop a new technique for energy storage, hydrogen being a good alternative for the future. That is the reason why within this project, the storage of hydrogen as an adsorbed element in metal hydride bottles has been studied, more specifically hydrogen desorption and discharge. To this end, a two-dimensional axisymmetric model is developed to study the hydrogen desorption reaction and resultant mass and heat transport phenomena inside a metal hydride canister. Moreover, the work has also been focused on experimental tests performed on an in-house fabricated setup using different heating scenarios. It is important to mention that the studied system has a lot of unknowns, as the metal inside the bottle, as well as the internal canister structure and morphology are not known. That is the reason why an extensive study on the effects of the metal properties on desorption performance is carried out through non-destructive testing (NDT). The numerical model results are explained in detail and compared with experimental data as well, obtaining a good agreement. Finally, the results obtained can not only be used to select metal hydride materials but also to evaluate the degradation of the canisters in terms of total hydrogen storage capacity.

Aquesta és la raó per la qual en aquest projecte s’ha estudiat l’emmagatzematge d’hidrogen com a element absorbit dins d’ampolles d’hidrur metàl·lic. Amb aquesta finalitat s’ha desenvolupat un model tridimensional del procés de càrrega en el recipient d’hidrur metàl·lic que és capaç de representar fidelment el comportament del sistema. This mathematical model has been implemented in a finite element program that allows obtaining results on the charging variables at different studied scenarios. Besides that, the work has also been focused on experimental tests performed on a set-up and its acquisition system, designed and assembled for this purpose. These experiments have been executed for both charge and discharge situations in different circumstances, for example changing the bottle and exterior air contact conditions, or immersing the bottle inside a calorimeter filled with water. The simulation results and the experimental data has been compared and contrasted in order to validate experimentally the numerical simulation. A series of nonlinear state observers are developed to estimate unmeasurable variables in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) system. A study of the most relevant variables to estimate which will improve the e ciency of the system and its performance is done. The implementation of the observers is based on the partial di erential equations that de ne the dynamics of the plant, represented by a distributed parameters model. Forward and backward discretization of the distributed model are performed to take advantage of the boundary conditions of the problem. A super-twisting corrective control action is implemented in the nonlinear observers to reduce the estimation error to zero in a finite amount of time. Simulation results are presented to show the performance of the observers to recover the values of the gas species concentrations and to extract conclusions for future research work.

Methane production through a solid oxide electrolyser with primary renewable source and carbon dioxide capture Renewable electric energy can be transformed into storable methane via electrolysis andsubsequent methanation. Power to Gas systems appear as a promising technology to ex-ploit the surplus energy from renewable power plants; different gases can be produced(e.g. methane or hydrogen).In this Master Thesis work, two different Power to Gas systems are modelled using Mat-lab Simulink: a Solid Oxide Electrolyser with aCO2-methanator and a Solid OxideCo-Electrolyser with aCO-methanator. This latter component can operate with an in-letH2/CO-ratio equale to 3 or larger. A ratio of 5 is also considered. TheCO2, comingfrom biogas produced in the Waste Water Treatment Plant ofEDAR Riu Secsituated inSabadell (Barcelona), is captured and processed in order to obtain methane. Additionally,according to the Master Thesis’ objectives, a photovoltaic power plant and aCO2stor-age are sized. An averaged power profile produced by a PV plant located in Barcelonais obtained with thePV*SOLprogramme. Therefore, the installation of a P2G systemallows to achieve two positive effects: firstly, theCO2is not released to the atmosphere.Secondly, theCO2is reused to produce methane without getting it, in a more pollutingway, from natural gas or coal.Nowadays not all the technologies analysed in this work are mature. Due to the com-plexity and partial lack of information simplified models and assumptions in operatingconditions have been employed.The main goal is to evaluate what is the most efficient Power to Gas choice in terms ofinstalled nominal power to exploit the entire amount of the carbon dioxide over one yearof operation. Furthemore the photovoltaic power plant is sized assuming operativity onlyduring the summer period; the differences with respect to yearly operation are illustratedin terms of required power and storage capacity.According to the results achieved in this work, the optimal Power to Gas system is theco-electrolyser coupled with aCO-methanator with aH2/CO-ratio equal to 3. Consid-ering the worst case of operation, thus during winter, a PV plant of 1.2 MW has to beinstalled to process the entire amount ofCO2available; regarding only summer opera-tion, a smaller plant of 0.8 MW plant is needed. The capacity of the storage, assumingonly summer operation, is also reduced of almost 30% with respect to winterly operation,where 995m3of storage are needed. The molar fractions of the outlet gas mixture, aftermethanation process, are around 30%CH4, 60%H2Oand 10%CO2.To obtain more precise results, improvements should be apported to the developed mod-els, enhancing the learning of the operating conditions Outgoing
