Equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy was cold- and hot-rolled (room temperature and 700 °C) to a thickness reduction of 90%. Subsequently, the rolled samples were annealed for 1 h at temperatures between 450 °C and 800 °C. The microstructure and texture of as-rolled and annealed samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron backscatter diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The evolution of microstructure and texture has been found to be governed by dislocation slip, recrystallization and annealing twin formation. Moreover, during processing at certain temperatures concurrent precipitation is observed. The mechanical properties of all samples were derived from tensile stress-strain curves determined at room temperature. Based on microstructural analyses the strength of the thermo-mechanically processed samples can be quantitatively explained by a combination of different strengthening mechanisms, such as dislocation, grain boundary and precipitation hardening.

Large string instruments, such as cellos and double basses, are manufactured, bought and played all over the world. Thereby they are exposed to different climate conditions. This paper describes shape alterations using the example of a double bass stored at different climatic conditions. By means of an optical measurement these shape alterations were recorded and represented. The results clearly show spots with strong and without deformations. Thus, weak points of the construction are localised and improvements can be established for the construction of string instruments.

Hybrid materials provide a high potential for lighter structures and an improved crash performance. The investigated hybrid sandwich laminate consists of steel cover sheets and a carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic core. The first part of this investigation is focusing on an analytical prediction as well as on a comparison of numerical and experimental results for the evaluation of the laminate properties to get a general understanding for the material. Within the second part the forming behaviour of this material is investigated experimentally, analytically and numerically by means of cup deep drawing. These results indicate that cup deep drawing of thermoplastic fibre metal laminates is possible but limited. The limits in terms of achievable drawing depths are found to be defined by cracking and wrinkling of the cover sheets as well as fibre failure in the composite material.

Laminates of high and commercial purity aluminium layers were processed by accumulative roll bonding performed up to ten cycles. The mechanical properties were measured by tensile testing. Both yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increase with higher number of cycles. The fracture strain is decreased through the first ARB cycle, but increases during further processing to reach a maximum after the sixth cycle. It is found that the development of the microstructure, especially in the high purity layers, strongly influences the mechanical properties.

The plastic anisotropy was studied on aluminium sheets with layers of different purity (A: 5N and B: 2N+) produced by accumulative roll bonding (ARB). Both material layers show a contrasting recrystallization behavior where A and B are discontinuously and continuously recrystallized, respectively. Global textures were measured by neutron diffraction. The mechanical anisotropy was measured by tensile testing after different numbers of ARB cycles. The planar anisotropy decreases with the number of ARB cycles while the normal anisotropy reaches a plateau after 4 cycles. Simulations of the Lankford parameters were carried out with the help of the viscoplastic self-consistent scheme (based on the global texture) and compared with the experimental data. Deviations of the simulated values from those of experiment are discussed with regard to through-thickness texture and material heterogeneities.

Texture, microstructure, and tensile behavior of technically pure aluminum AA1050 and of the age-hardening alloy AA6016 produced by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) were studied for different numbers of ARB cycles. After eight cycles an ultrafine grained microstructure with grain sizes of the order of 0.5 µm is reached. The grain size decreases with increasing alloying content. The texture consists of a major copper component and a minor brass component. The latter strengthens with alloying. Due to shear deformation in the surface region also a rotated cube component is found. It is stronger in the pure material and is partly added up in the bulk during ARB. Due to dislocation and grain boundary hardening the tensile strength increases with increasing ARB cycles following the Hall-Petch behavior while a moderate ductility is kept. Within the sheet plane no significant influence of the tensile direction on the observed mechanical properties was found.

The plastic anisotropy of ultrafine grained aluminium alloys AA1050 and AA6016 produced by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) has been investigated by tensile deformation via the Lankford parameter. The average normal and planar anisotropies slightly increase (from 0.6 to 0.9) and decrease (from 0.6 to −0.7) as a function of ARB cycles, respectively. The global textures measured by neutron diffraction are used to simulate the Lankford and anisotropy parameters of the plates after 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 ARB cycles with the help of the viscoplastic polycrystal self-consistent model. Simulation results are compared with those from experiment and discussed with regard to texture, strain rate sensitivity, grain shape and slip system activity.

In order to quantify the plastic anisotropy of the ultrafine grained aluminium alloy AA6016 produced by accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) the Lankford parameter is measured by tensile testing as a function of the number of ARB cycles. The experimental results are compared with those from texture-based Taylor simulations. Increasing differences between experiment and theory at higher number of ARB cycles may be attributed to highly oriented microstructural features.

The paper introduces the results of an EFB (European Research Association for Sheet Metal Working) research project concerning the applicability of tools made of chemically deposited nickel shells with polymer supports for small and medium scale deep drawing production. Several investigations of the material behaviour and tribological response of the chemically deposited nickel shells were performed together with numerical analyses of the deep-drawing process in order to optimize the tools under the consideration of the specific characteristics of the nickel shell and the polymer support structure. Finally, an optimized tool prototype has been manufactured and tested in order to verify the design solutions under service conditions.

Current developments show that in the field of sheeting alternative material concepts are successfully applied. In this context metal plastic sandwiches, which are composed of two thin metallic surface layers and a polymer core, represent an interesting group of semi-finished products. Compared to conventional sheet metal materials the structural modification caused by sandwich design provides an increased specific flexural rigidity. Extensive experimental and numerical investigations were carried out for the characterisation of this still young group of semi-finished products. The evaluation of suitable calculation methods represents a crucial step to a broad application of semi-finished metal plastic sandwiches within bulk production processes.

The use of so-called compliant elements with specifically adjustable compliances offers the possibility to transmit motions just by structural deformations. This paper makes a contribution to the efficient cyclic test of textile-reinforced compliant structures by developing a novel kinematictest stand realizing pure bending.
