Pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) precede clinical symptoms by years, indicating a period of cognitive resilience before the onset of dementia. Here, we report that activation of cyclic GMP–AMP synthase (cGAS) diminishes cognitive resilience by decreasing the neuronal transcriptional network of myocyte enhancer factor 2c (MEF2C) through type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling. Pathogenic tau activates cGAS and IFN-I responses in microglia, in part mediated by cytosolic leakage of mitochondrial DNA. Genetic ablation of Cgas in mice with tauopathy diminished the microglial IFN-I response, preserved synapse integrity and plasticity and protected against cognitive impairment without affecting the pathogenic tau load. cGAS ablation increased, while activation of IFN-I decreased, the neuronal MEF2C expression network linked to cognitive resilience in AD. Pharmacological inhibition of cGAS in mice with tauopathy enhanced the neuronal MEF2C transcriptional network and restored synaptic integrity, plasticity and memory, supporting the therapeutic potential of targeting the cGAS–IFN–MEF2C axis to improve resilience against AD-related pathological insults.

Abstract. Narrative recall, or describing an event from one’s past, is a common method to study anger in the laboratory. However, most research using this method has not included a neutral speaking control, and therefore the physiological response attributable to emotion versus the act of speech is unknown. We evaluated heart rate, blood pressure, skin conductance level, heart rate variability, and salivary alpha-amylase during silent baseline, neutral speaking, anger recall, and recovery periods, and correlated these measures with trait anger, forgiveness, and rumination ( n = 104). Only systolic blood pressure and skin conductance levels were elevated in the anger recall period above the values in the neutral speaking period, showing the need for this important control. Alpha-amylase was inversely correlated to forgiveness, particularly in females. A neutral speaking control is critical for anger recall protocols because the physiological responses are mostly due to speaking, not anger. Salivary alpha-amylase may be a promising autonomic marker in studies of forgiveness and anger.

Phenoxybenzamine (nonselective, noncompetitive alpha-blocker) is the preferred drug for preoperative treatment of pheochromocytoma, but doxazosin (selective, competitive alpha-blocker) may be equally effective. We compared the efficacy of doxazosin vs phenoxybenzamine.We conducted a prospective study of patients undergoing pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma resection by randomizing pretreatment with phenoxybenzamine or doxazosin at a single tertiary referral center. The high cost of phenoxybenzamine led to high crossover to doxazosin. Randomization was halted, and a consecutive historical cohort of phenoxybenzamine patients was included for a case-control study design. The efficacy of alpha-blockade was assessed with preinduction infusion of incremental doses of phenylephrine. The primary outcomes were mortality, cardiovascular complications, and intensive care unit admission. The secondary outcomes were hemodynamic instability index (proportion of operation outside of hemodynamic goals), adequacy of blockade by the phenylephrine titration test, and drug costs.Twenty-four patients were prospectively enrolled (doxazosin, n = 20; phenoxybenzamine, n = 4), and 15 historical patients treated with phenoxybenzamine were added (total phenoxybenzamine, n = 19). No major cardiovascular complications occurred in either group. The phenylephrine dose-response curves showed less blood pressure rise in the phenoxybenzamine than in the doxazosin group (linear regression coefficient = 0.008 vs 0.018, P = .01), suggesting better alpha-blockade in the phenoxybenzamine group. The median hemodynamic instability index was 14% vs 13% in the phenoxybenzamine and doxazosin groups, respectively (P = .56). The median highest daily cost of phenoxybenzamine was $442.20 compared to $5.06 for doxazosin.Phenoxybenzamine may blunt intraoperative hypertension better than doxazosin, but this difference did not translate to fewer cardiovascular complications and is offset by a considerably increased cost.

The fast development of mid-wave infrared photonics has increased the demand for high-performance photodetectors that operate in this spectral range. However, the signal-to-noise ratio, regarded as a primary figure of merit for mid-wave infrared detection, is strongly limited by the high dark current in narrow-bandgap materials. Therefore, conventional mid-wave infrared photodetectors such as HgCdTe require cryogenic temperatures to avoid excessively high dark current. To address this challenge, we report an avalanche photodiode design using photon-trapping structures to enhance the quantum efficiency and minimize the absorber thickness to suppress the dark current. The device exhibits high quantum efficiency and dark current density that is nearly three orders of magnitude lower than that of the state-of-the-art HgCdTe avalanche photodiodes and nearly two orders lower than that of previously reported AlInAsSb avalanche photodiodes that operate at 2 µm. Additionally, the bandwidth of these avalanche photodiodes reaches ~7 GHz, and the gain–bandwidth product is over 200 GHz; both are more than four times those of previously reported 2 µm avalanche photodiodes.

This paper reviews materials and structural approaches that have been developed to reduce the excess noise in avalanche photodiodes and increase the gain-bandwidth product.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to other mammals, including pet animals, has been reported. However, with the exception of farmed mink, there is no previous evidence that these infected animals can infect humans, resulting in sustained human-to-human transmission. Following a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection of a pet shop worker, animals in the shop and the warehouse supplying it were tested for evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection.In this case study, viral swabs and blood samples were collected from animals in a pet shop and its corresponding warehouse in Hong Kong. Nasal swab or saliva samples from human COVID-19 patients epidemiologically linked to the pet shop and from subsequent local cases confirmed to be infected by SARS-CoV-2 delta variant were collected. Oral swabs were tested by quantitative RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) for SARS-CoV-2 and blood samples were serologically tested by a surrogate virus neutralisation test and plaque reduction neutralisation test. The SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR positive samples were sequenced by next generation viral full genome sequencing using the ISeq sequencing platform (Illumina), and the viral genomes were phylogenetically analysed.Eight (50%) of 16 individually tested Syrian hamsters in the pet shop and seven (58%) of 12 Syrian hamsters in the corresponding warehouse were positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection in RT-qPCR or serological tests. None of the dwarf hamsters (n=75), rabbits (n=246), guinea pigs (n=66), chinchillas (n=116), and mice (n=2) were confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 in RT-qPCR tests. SARS-CoV-2 viral genomes deduced from human and hamster cases in this incident all belong to the delta variant of concern (AY.127) that had not been circulating locally before this outbreak. The viral genomes obtained from hamsters were phylogenetically related with some sequence heterogeneity. Phylogenetic dating suggests infection in these hamsters occurred around Oct 14, 2021 (95% CI Sept 15 to Nov 9, 2021). Multiple zoonotic transmission events to humans were detected, leading to onward human-to-human transmission.Pet hamsters can be naturally infected with SARS-CoV-2. The virus can circulate among hamsters and lead to human infections. Both genetic and epidemiological results strongly suggest that there was more than one hamster-to-human transmission event in this study. This incident also led to onward human transmission. We report Al0.3InAsSb/Al0.7InAsSb digital alloy n-barrier-n (nBn) photodetectors that operate in the 2-μm wavelength window. The AlxIn1-xAsySb1-y digital alloy material system exhibits near-zero valence-band offset, which is beneficial for nBn photodetectors. At 300 K these Al0.3InAsSb/Al0.7InAsSb nBn photodetectors have achieved specific detectivities of 1.7 × 10 10 and 3.0 × 10 10 Jones under 2-μm and 1.8-μm illumination, respectively. The dark current density at -0.5 V bias decreases from 3.1 × 10 -3 A/cm 2 at 300 K to 1.6 × 10 -10 A/cm 2 at 120 K, where the dominant dark current component is tunneling. The area-dependence of key performance parameters show that for mesa diameter ≤ 250 μm, surface defects assume a dominant role in the total noise.

We simulate transport for proposed low excess-noise avalanche photodiode InAlAs/InAsSb type-II superlattice materials to evaluate their impact ionization coefficients; a key metric in determining avalanche photodiode performance. The ensemble Monte Carlo method is utilized to develop a stochastic transport kernel suitable for superlattice transport in the static field approximation. The electronic band structure and impact ionization rates are computed from a 14-band superlattice envelope function $$\varvec{K}\cdot \varvec{p}$$ formalism. We reveal that band engineering through superlattice design can be utilized to enhance the electron-to-hole impact ionization ratio in the InAlAs/InAsSb superlattice material system.

Outcomes of predator–prey interactions depend on biotic and abiotic factors. Habitat complexity, for example, mediates predator functional response type and parameters (attack rate and handling time). However, the relationship between habitat complexity and functional response varies across ecosystems. We assessed interactions between the giant water bug, Belostoma sp., and its prey, rams-horn snails, Helisoma trivolvis, across four prey densities (N = 2, 4, 8, 16 snails) and three habitat complexity levels (No-complexity, Low-complexity, High-complexity) to understand how complexity affected the functional response. We also tested effects of predator and prey body size on number of prey killed. Belostoma exhibited a Type III functional response in all habitat complexity treatments. Attack rate tended to increase with increasing complexity. Handling time was different among treatments, being lowest in the No-complexity treatment and highest in the Low-complexity treatment. Belostoma body size was positively related, while Helisoma body size was inversely related, to the number of Helisoma killed. We show habitat complexity does not affect the shape of predator functional response but impacts response parameters in the Belostoma–Helisoma system. We reaffirm that attack rate, handling time, and mortality outcomes for prey within predator–prey interactions are affected by abiotic factors through habitat complexity.

We use the MicroBooNE LArTPC to reconstruct MeV-scale radiological decays. Using this technique we measure the liquid argon filtration system's efficacy at removing radon. This is studied by placing a 500 kBq 222Rn source upstream of the filters and searching for a time-dependent increase in the number of radiological decays in the LArTPC. In the context of two models for radon mitigation via a liquid argon filtration system, a slowing mechanism and a trapping mechanism, MicroBooNE data supports a radon reduction factor of greater than 97% or 99.999%, respectively. Furthermore, a radiological survey of the filters found that the copper-based filter material was the primary medium that removed the 222Rn. Mid-IR is a useful wavelength range for both science and military applications due to its low atmospheric attenuation and ability to be used for passive detection. However, many solutions for detecting light in this spectral region need to be operated at cryogenic temperatures as their required narrow bandgaps suffer from carrier recombination and band-to-band tunneling at room temperature leading to high dark currents. These problems can be alleviated by using a separate absorption, charge, and multiplication avalanche photodiode. We have recently demonstrated such a device with a 3-µm cutoff using Al

We report the frequency response of Al0.3InAsSb/Al0.7InAsSb nBn photodetectors. The 3-dB bandwidth of the devices varies from ∼ 150 MHz to ∼ 700 MHz with different device diameters and saturates with bias voltage immediately after the device turn on. A new equivalent circuit model is developed to explain the frequency behavior of nBn photodetectors. The simulated bandwidth based on the new equivalent circuit model agrees well with the bandwidth and the microwave scattering parameter measurements. The analysis reveals that the limiting factor of the bandwidth of the nBn photodetector is the large diffusion capacitance caused by the minority carrier lifetime and the device area. Additionally, the bandwidth of the nBn photodetector is barely affected by the photocurrent, which is found to be caused by the barrier structure in the nBn photodetector.

Microglia are emerging as key drivers of neurological diseases. However, we lack a systematic understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Here, we present a screening platform to systematically elucidate functional consequences of genetic perturbations in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived microglia. We developed an efficient 8-day protocol for the generation of microglia-like cells based on the inducible expression of six transcription factors. We established inducible CRISPR interference and activation in this system and conducted three screens targeting the ‘druggable genome’. These screens uncovered genes controlling microglia survival, activation and phagocytosis, including neurodegeneration-associated genes. A screen with single-cell RNA sequencing as the readout revealed that these microglia adopt a spectrum of states mirroring those observed in human brains and identified regulators of these states. A disease-associated state characterized by osteopontin (SPP1) expression was selectively depleted by colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF1R) inhibition. Thus, our platform can systematically uncover regulators of microglial states, enabling their functional characterization and therapeutic targeting.

In applications where high sensitivity is required, the internal gain mechanism of avalanche photodiodes can provide a performance advantage relative to p-i-n photodiodes. However, this internal gain mechanism leads to an excess noise that scales with gain. This excess noise term can be minimized by using materials systems in which impact ionization is initiated primarily by one carrier type. Recently, two Sb-based materials systems, AlInAsSb and AlGaAsSb, have exhibited exceptionally low excess noise, particularly for III–V compound materials. There are four important considerations that can impact the excess noise measurements in such low-noise materials. These considerations deal with the excess noise factor calculation method, measurement RF frequency, measurement wavelength, and the gain calculation method. In this paper, each of these factors is discussed, and their implications on excess noise are considered.

Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) has been associated with adverse infant developmental outcomes; however, the influence of the number of father-figures (abusive vs non-abusive) has on young infants’ risk for neurodevelopmental delays has not been examined. A secondary data analysis was conducted from the Domestic Violence Enhanced Perinatal Home Visits (DOVE) study of abused pregnant women (N = 239) and their infants’ neurodevelopment from baseline through 12-months postpartum. Although all women reported decreased violence from baseline to 12 months postpartum, there was a significant main effect between baseline IPV scores and infant risk for developmental delay at 12 months (β = .19; p

COVID-19 changed the way we delivered care to our patients at our Hospital. Prior to the pandemic, no patient facing video clinics and only a small number of telephone clinics were held. In this paper, we share our experience of rapidly implementing virtual clinics (VCs) due to COVID-19. This commentary is based on focused discussions between hospital leaders and provides a reflective account and commentary on leadership lessons learnt from our experience of deploying VCs. We outline success factors (being able to capitalise on existing strategy, having time and space to establish VCs, using an agreed improvement framework, empowering a diverse and expert implementation team with a flat hierarchy, using efficient decision pathways, communication and staff willingness to change), technical challenges (patient capability and skills to use technology, patient connectivity and platform capacity) and considerations for the future (sustaining new ways of working, platform selection, integration, business continuity and commissioning considerations, barriers regarding capability and communication, effectiveness and clinical outcomes). Finally, we provide an overview of the leadership lessons from this project and identify key areas of focus for delivering successful change projects in future (the vision, allocation of resources, methodology selection and managing the skills gap).

In 1982, Capasso and co-workers proposed the solid-state analogue of the photomultiplier tube, termed the staircase avalanche photodiode. Through a combination of compositional grading and small applied bias, the conduction band profile is arranged into a series of steps that function similar to the dynodes of a photomultiplier tube, with twofold gain arising at each step via impact ionization. A single-step staircase was previously reported but did not demonstrate gain scaling through cascading multiple steps or report noise properties. Here we demonstrate gain scaling of up to three steps; measurements show the expected 2N scaling with the number of staircase steps, N. Furthermore, measured noise increased more slowly with gain than for photomultiplier tubes, probably due to the lower stochasticity of impact ionization across well-designed heterojunctions as compared with the secondary electron emission from metals. Excellent agreement was found between the experiments and Monte Carlo simulations for both gain and noise. A three-step staircase avalanche diode was demonstrated and pre-cited gain scaling was confirmed. The technology may be considered as a solid-state analogue to the photomultiplier tube.

As the technology revolving around IoT sensors develops in a rapid manner, the subsequent social networks that are essential for the growth of the system will be utilized as a means to filter the objects that are preferred by the consumers. The ultimate purpose of the system is to give the customers personalized recommendations based on their preference. Similarly, the location and orientation will also play a crucial role in identifying the preference of the customer is a more efficient manner. Almost all social networks make use of location information to provide better services to the users based on the research performed. Hence there is a need for developing a recommender system that is dependent on location. In this paper, we have incorporated a recommender system that makes use of recommender algorithm that is personalized to take into consideration the context of the user. The preference of the user is analysed with the help of IoT smart devices like the smart watches, Google home, smart phones, ipads etc. The user preferences are obtained from these devices and will enable the recommender system to gauge the best resources. The results based on evaluation are compared with that of the content-based recommender algorithm and collaborative filtering to enable the recommendation engine’s power.

We report a 6 month-old infant girl with t(1;11)(p32;q23), KMT2A/EPS15-rearranged B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) that was refractory to traditional ALL-directed chemotherapy. Following administration of blinatumomab, she experienced lineage switch from B-ALL to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Myeloid-directed chemotherapy resulted in clearance of AML by flow cytometry, though a residual CD19+ B-ALL population persisted (0.14%). Following bridging blinatumomab, the patient achieved B-ALL and AML remission, as measured by flow cytometry. The patient subsequently underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Unfortunately, she relapsed with CD19+ B-ALL one-month post-transplantation. Next generation sequencing study of IGH/IGL using ClonoSEQ® analysis detected 3 dominant sequences all present in her original B-ALL, lineage switched AML, and post-transplant relapsed B-ALL, though the latter showed an additional 4 sequences, three of which were present at low abundance in the original diagnostic sample. The presence of the same clones throughout her disease course suggests cellular reprogramming and differentiation following chemotherapy and immunotherapy. This is the first reported case of lineage switch of B-ALL with t(1;11) and also the first report of a lineage switch case that used ClonoSEQ® to define the clonality of the original B-ALL, lineage switched AML, and relapsed B-ALL.

We report high-gain, low-noise-figure, and high linearity analog photonic links at 1064 nm using InP/InGaAs modified uni-traveling-carrier (MUTC) photodiodes. Balanced photodiodes reach output powers of 17.7 dBm, 19.8 dBm, 20.7 dBm, and 22 dBm at 38 GHz, 29 GHz, 27 GHz, and 24.5 GHz, respectively. High common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 25 dB and good linearity with a third-order intercept point (OIP3) of up to 34 dBm were measured at 38 GHz for 10-μm-diameter balanced photodiodes. We demonstrate two analog photonic links with different noise reduction techniques without electronic amplification. In the first link, we use balanced detection with a quadrature-biased Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) for noise cancellation. Link gain of 6.8 dB, noise figure (NF) of 25.8 dB and spurious free dynamic range (SFDR3) of 114 dB·Hz2/3 at 38 GHz were achieved. The second link works at low bias modulation for improved signal-to-noise ratio with a single photodetector. Record-high gain (19.3 dB at 26 GHz and 17 dB at 38 GHz) and low noise figure (14.5 dB at 26 GHz and 17 dB at 38 GHz) were demonstrated.

Summary Objective Clinicians make numerous decisions when 3D printing models for fabrication of thermoformed appliances, including printing solid or hollow models. While hollow models can reduce resin use, models intended for thermoformed appliance fabrication must be printed with sufficient thickness to withstand thermoforming. The aim of the study was to determine for hollow 3D printed orthodontic models if there is an effect of shell thickness on the dimensional accuracy of retainers thermoformed upon them as compared with solid models and, if so, to identify the minimum shell thickness that ensures dimensional accuracy of the thermoformed retainer under the conditions investigated. Material and methods Thermoformed appliances were fabricated on 3D printed models of six shell thicknesses: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 3.0 mm, and solid (n = 10/group). The models were scanned before and after thermoforming. Thermoformed appliances were captured by two methods: scanning a polyvinylsiloxane casting of the appliance and scanning the appliance interior surface (intaglio surface). Each model-appliance pair was compared using superimposition software. A generalized linear model and post-hoc Tukey contrasts (α = 0.05) were applied to compare each thickness. Results Model thickness has a statistically significant effect on dimensional accuracy of thermoformed appliances. Appliances fabricated on 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm models displayed poor accuracy, with a statistically significantly lower percentage of data points within tolerance (±0.250 mm) than appliances fabricated on models printed at 2.0 mm thickness and greater. Conclusions 3D printed model thickness affects the dimensional accuracy of a thermoformed retainer. To ensure minimal deformation and promote clinical utility of the thermoformed appliance, models should be printed with a minimum shell thickness of 2.0 mm for the materials investigated.

Mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) detection is useful in a variety of scientific and military applications. Avalanche photodiodes can provide an advantage for detection as their internal gain mechanism can increase the system signal-to-noise ratio of a receiver. We demonstrate a separate absorption, charge, and multiplication avalanche photodiode using a digitally grown narrow-bandgap Al0.05InAsSb absorber for MWIR detection and a wide bandgap Al0.7InAsSb multiplier for low-excess-noise amplification. Under 2- µm illumination at 100 K, the device can reach gains over 850. The excess noise factor of the device scales with a low k-factor of ∼0.04. The unity-gain external quantum efficiency of the device attains a peak of 54% (1.02 A/W) at 2.35 µm and maintains an efficiency of 24% (0.58 A/W) at 3 µm before cutting off at ∼3.5 µm. At a gain of 850, the device has a gain-normalized dark current density of 0.05 mA/cm2. This device achieves gains more than double that of the state-of-the-art InAs detectors and achieves gain-normalized dark current densities over two orders of magnitude lower than that of a previously reported MWIR Al0.15InAsSb-based detector.

In the fall of 2019, the Music Library Association's Reference and Access Services Subcommittee surveyed academic librarians as to the following parameters regarding their music reference services: delivery methods, physical locations, staffing models, approaches to training, perceived effectiveness of services, and changes over time Findings suggest that despite technological advances, most music reference help is delivered through in-person, email, phone, and chat Just over half of respondents have only librarians addressing reference questions, while the remainder also use students and paraprofessionals There was no meaningful difference in perceived effectiveness between the various staffing models While only 19 percent of participants are situated in branch libraries for music, these locations experienced a higher increase in reference transactions and more outreach and instruction over the last five years and also ranked their reference services with more effectiveness Additionally, respondents identified training and outreach as integral to the effectiveness of reference services and communicated their experiences with changes to service and staffing models

One of the most common approaches for quenching single-photon avalanche diodes is to use a passive resistor in series with it. A drawback of this approach has been the limited recovery speed of the single-photon avalanche diodes. High resistance is needed to quench the avalanche, leading to slower recharging of the single-photon avalanche diodes depletion capacitor. We address this issue by replacing a fixed quenching resistor with a bias-dependent adaptive resistive switch. Reversible generation of metallic conduction enables switching between low and high resistance states under unipolar bias. As an example, using a Pt/Al2O3/Ag resistor with a commercial silicon single-photon avalanche diodes, we demonstrate avalanche pulse widths as small as ~30 ns, 10× smaller than a passively quenched approach, thus significantly improving the single-photon avalanche diodes frequency response. The experimental results are consistent with a model where the adaptive resistor dynamically changes its resistance during discharging and recharging the single-photon avalanche diodes.

A Si-Ge waveguide avalanche photodiode with extremely high temperature stability is demonstrated. The breakdown voltage increases ∼4.2 mV/°C, bandwidth reduces ∼0.09%/°C, and gain-bandwidth product reduces ∼0.24%/°C with temperature increased from 30 °C to 90 °C. Additionally, it maintains superior performance with low breakdown voltage of ∼10 V, high multiplication gain of >15, high bandwidth of ∼24.6 GHz, high gain-bandwidth product of >240 GHz, high internal quantum efficiency of ∼100%, and clear eye diagrams with 64 Gbps PAM4 modulation at 90 °C.

Back-illuminated flip-chip-bonded InP/InGaAs modified uni-traveling-carrier photodiodes working at 1064 nm wavelength are demonstrated. The RF output powers of photodiodes with diameters of 10 μm and 20 μm are 15 dBm at 60 GHz and 21.7 dBm at 39 GHz, respectively. The measured third-order output intercept point (OIP3) shows a high linearity of 33 dBm at 40 GHz. A circuit analysis based on Z-parameter extraction indicates that voltage-dependent and photocurrent-dependent capacitance components are the primary nonlinear mechanisms.

Background Frailty is a complex clinical syndrome associated with vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. While frailty is thought to be common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the relationship between frailty and COPD-related outcomes such as risk of acute exacerbations of COPD (AE-COPD) and hospitalizations is unclear. Purpose To examine the association between physical frailty and risk of acute exacerbations, hospitalizations, and mortality in patients with COPD. Methods A longitudinal analysis of data from a cohort of 280 participants was performed. Baseline frailty measures included exhaustion, weakness, low activity, slowness, and undernutrition. Outcome measures included AE-COPD, hospitalizations, and mortality over 2 years. Negative binomial regression and Cox proportional hazard modeling were used. Results Sixty-two percent of the study population met criteria for pre-frail and 23% were frail. In adjusted analyses, the frailty syndrome was not associated with COPD exacerbations. However, among the individual components of the frailty syndrome, weakness measured by handgrip strength was associated with increased risk of COPD exacerbations (IRR 1.46, 95% CI 1.09-1.97). The frailty phenotype was not associated with all-cause hospitalizations but was associated with increased risk of non-COPD-related hospitalizations. Conclusion This longitudinal cohort study shows that a high proportion of patients with COPD are pre-frail or frail. The frailty phenotype was associated with an increased risk of non-COPD hospitalizations but not with all-cause hospitalizations or COPD exacerbations. Among the individual frailty components, low handgrip strength was associated with increased risk of COPD exacerbations over a 2-year period. Measuring handgrip strength may identify COPD patients who could benefit from programs to reduce COPD exacerbations.

Due to geologic processes and recent anthropogenic introductions, patterns of genetic and morphological diversity within the Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu), which are endemic to the central and eastern United States (USA), are poorly understood. We assessed genetic and morphological differentiation between the widespread Northern Smallmouth Bass (M. d. dolomieu) and the more restricted Neosho Smallmouth Bass (M. d. velox) where their ranges meet in the Central Interior Highlands ecoregion (CIH). Data from 14 microsatellite loci were used to conduct Structure and principal components analyses to evaluate diversity across populations and screen for hybridization with sympatric Spotted Bass (M. punctulatus). We also tested for morphological differences using five morphometric traits and one meristic trait. We found support for three genetic clusters corresponding to previously described taxonomic variation; five clusters largely corresponding to river systems; and nine clusters representing hierarchical population structure within both ranges. We found evidence of a unique genetic cluster in tributaries of the White River within the Northern Smallmouth Bass range and admixture between the subspecies throughout the Neosho range. We also found evidence of morphological differentiation between subspecies; Neosho Smallmouth Bass exhibited larger head length than Northern Smallmouth Bass relative to total length, and there was a significant interaction of subspecies and orbital length, possibly indicating differential growth patterns between subspecies. Our results reveal multiple levels of divergence, suggesting the CIH harbors greater and more complex Smallmouth Bass diversity than previously thought.
