Search

Until recently, scholars paid relatively little attention to chapter 23 of Leviathan, in which Hobbes discussed “the public ministers of sovereign power.” In the past few years, however, political theorists have used chapter 23 extensively in discussions of Hobbes’ concept of the state. But what was the significance of the chapter in its own time? This article suggests it served two purposes. First, it allowed Hobbes to bolster and elaborate arguments made elsewhere in Leviathan. Second, it responded to 1640s debates between royalists and parliamentarians over the role of subordinate magistrates in a polity. By the time Leviathan was published in 1651 these debates were no longer pressing, which explains the chapter’s rapid descent into obscurity. Nonetheless, recovering this polemical context helps to understand the genesis of this small but significant part of Hobbes’ political thought.

We present the first high signal-to-noise broadband X-ray spectrum of the radio-quiet type-2 Seyfert ESO 033-G002, combining data from $XMM$-$Newton$ and $NuSTAR$. The nuclear X-ray spectrum is complex, showing evidence for both neutral and ionised absorption, as well as reflection from both the accretion disc and more distant material, but our broadband coverage allows us to disentangle all of these different components. The total neutral column during this epoch is $N_{\rm{H}} \sim 5-6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, consistent with the optical classification of ESO 033-G002 as a type-2 Seyfert but not so large as to prevent us from robustly determining the properties of the innermost accretion flow. The ionised absorption - dominated by lines from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI - reveals a moderately rapid outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 5400$ km s$^{-1}$) which has a column comparable to the neutral absorption. We find the disc reflection from the innermost regions to be extreme, with a reflection fraction of $R_{\rm{frac}} \sim 5$. This requires strong gravitational lightbending and, in turn, both an extremely compact corona (within $\sim$2 $R_{\rm{G}}$ of the black hole) and a rapidly rotating black hole ($a^* > 0.96$). Despite this tight size constraint, with a temperature of $kT_{\rm{e}} = 40-70$ keV the X-ray corona in ESO 033-G002 appears similar to other AGN in terms of its placement in the compactness-temperature plane, consistent with sitting close to the limit determined by runaway pair production. Finally, combining X-ray spectroscopy, timing and updated optical spectroscopy, we also estimate the mass of the black hole to be $\log[M_{\rm{BH}} / M_{\odot}] \sim 7.0 - 7.5$., 15 pages, 8 figures; published in MNRAS

Significance For over 100 y, the scientific community has adhered to a paradigm, introduced by Riemann and furthered by Helmholtz and Schrodinger, where perceptual color space is a three-dimensional Riemannian space. This implies that the distance between two colors is the length of the shortest path that connects them. We show that a Riemannian metric overestimates the perception of large color differences because large color differences are perceived as less than the sum of small differences. This effect, called diminishing returns, cannot exist in a Riemannian geometry. Consequently, we need to adapt how we model color differences, as the current standard, Δ E , recognized by the International Commission for Weights and Measures, does not account for diminishing returns in color difference perception.

The two established techniques for measuring black hole spin in X-ray binaries often yield conflicting results, which must be resolved before either method may be deemed robust. In practice, black hole spin measurements based on fitting the accretion disc continuum effectively do not marginalize over the colour correction factor $f_{\mathrm{col}}$. This factor parametrizes spectral hardening of the disc continuum by the disc atmosphere, whose true properties are poorly constrained. We incorporate reasonable systematic uncertainties in $f_{\mathrm{col}}$ into the eight (non-maximal) black hole spin measurements vetted by the disc continuum fitting community. In most cases, an $f_{\mathrm{col}}$ uncertainty of $\pm$0.2-0.3 dominates the black hole spin error budget. We go on to demonstrate that plausible departures in $f_{\mathrm{col}}$ values from those adopted by the disc continuum fitting practitioners can bring the discrepant black hole spins into agreement with those from iron line modeling. Under the assumption that a Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) is ultimately produced by a Blandford-Znajek (BZ) jet from a highly spinning black hole BH, we put limits on the magnetic field and BH mass needed to power observed long and short GRBs. For BHs in the range of $2-10 M_{\odot}$ (for long GRBs) and $0.5-4 M_{\odot}$ (for short GRBs), we find magnetic fields in the range of $5x10^{14} \lesssim B \lesssim 10^{17}$ G are needed to power the observed GRBs. Under the simple assumption of flux conservation, we estimate the magnetic fields of the progenitor systems for both long and short GRBs, finding that single massive star progenitors require fields $\sim 10^{6}$ G and NS merger systems require fields $\sim 10^{15}$ G. We also discuss the implications and consequences of high magnetic fields in GRB BH-disk systems, in terms of MRI field growth and magnetically arrested disks. Finally, we examine the conditions under which the progenitor systems can retain enough angular momentum to create BHs spinning rapidly enough to power BZ jets.

Understanding how matter behaves at the highest densities and temperatures is a major open problem in both nuclear physics and relativistic astrophysics. This physics is often encapsulated in the so-called high-temperature nuclear equation of state, which influences compact binary mergers, core-collapse supernovae, and many more phenomena. One such case is the type (either black hole or neutron star) and mass of the remnant of the core collapse of a massive star. For each of six candidate equations of state, we use a very large suite of spherically symmetric supernova models to generate a suite of synthetic populations of such remnants. We then compare these synthetic populations to the observed remnant population. We thus provide a novel constraint on the high-temperature nuclear equation of state and describe which EOS candidates are more or less favored by this metric., Accepted by ApJ Letters; revised version; 3 figures, 2 tables

We study the X-ray spectra of a sample of 19 obscured, optically-selected Seyfert galaxies (Sy 1.8, 1.9 and 2) in the local universe ($d \leq 175$~Mpc), drawn from the CfA Seyfert sample. Our analysis is driven by the high sensitivity of NuSTAR in the hard X-rays, coupled with soft X-ray spectra using XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, and Swift/XRT. We also analyze the optical spectra of these sources in order to obtain accurate mass estimates and Eddington fractions. We employ four different models to analyze the X-ray spectra of these sources, which all result in consistent results. We find that 79-90 % of the sources are heavily obscured with line-of-sight column density $N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}~\rm cm^{-2}$. We also find a Compton-thick ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{24}~\rm cm^{-2}$) fraction of $37-53$ %. These results are consistent with previous estimates based on multi-wavelength analyses. We find that the fraction of reprocessed to intrinsic emission is positively correlated with $N_{\rm H}$ and negatively correlated with the intrinsic, unabsorbed, X-ray luminosity (in agreement with the Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect). We report on the first simultaneous $NICER$ and $NuSTAR$ observations of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1735$-$44, obtained in 2018 August. The source was at a luminosity of $\sim1.8~(D/5.6\ \mathrm{kpc})^{2}\times10^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ in the $0.4-30$ keV band. We account for the continuum emission with two different continuum descriptions that have been used to model the source previously. Despite the choice in continuum model, the combined passband reveals a broad Fe K line indicative of reflection in the spectrum. In order to account for the reflection spectrum we utilize a modified version of the reflection model RELXILL that is tailored for thermal emission from accreting NSs. Alternatively, we also use the reflection convolution model of RFXCONV to model the reflected emission that would arise from a Comptonized thermal component for comparison. We determine that the innermost region of the accretion disk extends close to the innermost stable circular orbit ($R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$) at the 90% confidence level regardless of reflection model. Chandra obtained two High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) spectra of the stellar-mass black hole GRO J1655-40 during its 2005 outburst, revealing a rich and complex disk wind. Soon after its launch, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory began monitoring the same outburst. Some X-ray Telescope (XRT) observations were obtained in a mode that makes it impossible to remove strong Mn calibration lines, so the Fe K-alpha line region in the spectra was previously neglected. However, these lines enable a precise calibration of the energy scale, facilitating studies of the absorption-dominated disk wind and its velocity shifts. Here, we present fits to 15 Swift/XRT spectra, revealing variability and evolution in the outflow. The data strongly point to a magnetically driven disk wind: both the higher velocity (e.g., v ~ 10^4 km/s) and lower velocity (e.g., v ~ 10^3 km/s) wind components are typically much faster than is possible for thermally driven outflows (v < 200 km/s), and photoionization modeling yields absorption radii that are two orders of magnitude below the Compton radius that defines the typical inner extent of thermal winds. Moreover, correlations between key wind parameters yield an average absorption measure distribution (AMD) that is consistent with magnetohydrodynamic wind models. Summary CRISPR/Cas9 and Cas12a (Cpf1) nucleases are two of the most powerful genome editing tools in plants. In this work, we compared their activities by targeting maize glossy2 gene coding region that has overlapping sequences recognized by both nucleases. We introduced constructs carrying SpCas9‐guide RNA (gRNA) and LbCas12a‐CRISPR RNA (crRNA) into maize inbred B104 embryos using Agrobacterium‐mediated transformation. On‐target mutation analysis showed that 90%–100% of the Cas9‐edited T0 plants carried indel mutations and 63%–77% of them were homozygous or biallelic mutants. In contrast, 0%–60% of Cas12a‐edited T0 plants had on‐target mutations. We then conducted CIRCLE‐seq analysis to identify genome‐wide potential off‐target sites for Cas9. A total of 18 and 67 potential off‐targets were identified for the two gRNAs, respectively, with an average of five mismatches compared to the target sites. Sequencing analysis of a selected subset of the off‐target sites revealed no detectable level of mutations in the T1 plants, which constitutively express Cas9 nuclease and gRNAs. In conclusion, our results suggest that the CRISPR/Cas9 system used in this study is highly efficient and specific for genome editing in maize, while CRISPR/Cas12a needs further optimization for improved editing efficiency.

We introduce a new relativistic astrophysics code, SpECTRE, that combines a discontinuous Galerkin method with a task-based parallelism model. SpECTRE's goal is to achieve more accurate solutions for challenging relativistic astrophysics problems such as core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers. The robustness of the discontinuous Galerkin method allows for the use of high-resolution shock capturing methods in regions where (relativistic) shocks are found, while exploiting high-order accuracy in smooth regions. A task-based parallelism model allows efficient use of the largest supercomputers for problems with a heterogeneous workload over disparate spatial and temporal scales. We argue that the locality and algorithmic structure of discontinuous Galerkin methods will exhibit good scalability within a task-based parallelism framework. We demonstrate the code on a wide variety of challenging benchmark problems in (non)-relativistic (magneto)-hydrodynamics. We demonstrate the code's scalability including its strong scaling on the NCSA Blue Waters supercomputer up to the machine's full capacity of 22,380 nodes using 671,400 threads., 41 pages, 13 figures, and 7 tables. We report on X-ray and radio observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 1543-624 taken in August 2017 during an enhanced accretion episode. We obtained NICER monitoring of the source over a $\sim10$ day period during which target-of-opportunity observations were also conducted with Swift, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. Emission lines were measured in the NICER X-ray spectrum at $\sim0.64$ keV and $\sim6.4$ keV that correspond to O and Fe, respectively. By modeling these line components, we are able to track changes in the accretion disk throughout this period. The innermost accretion flow appears to move inwards from hundreds of gravitational radii ($R_{g}=GM/c^{2}$) at the beginning of the outburst to $, Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Current measurements show that the observed fraction of Compton-thick (CT) AGN is smaller than the expected values needed to explain the cosmic X-ray background. Prior fits to the X-ray spectrum of the nearby Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 5347 ($z=0.00792,\, D =35.5 \rm ~Mpc $) have alternately suggested a CT and Compton-thin source. Combining archival data from $Suzaku$, $Chandra$, and - most importantly - new data from $NuSTAR$, and using three distinct families of models, we show that NGC 5347 is an obscured CTAGN ($N_{\rm H} > 2.23\times 10^{24}~\rm cm^{-2}$). Its 2-30~keV spectrum is dominated by reprocessed emission from distant material, characterized by a strong Fe K$\alpha$ line and a Compton hump. We found a large equivalent width of the Fe K$\alpha$ line ($\rm EW = 2.3 \pm 0.3$ keV) and a high intrinsic-to-observed flux ratio ($\sim 100$). All of these observations are typical for bona fide CTAGN. We estimate a bolometric luminosity of $L_{\rm bol} \simeq 0.014 \pm 0.005~L_{\rm Edd.}$. The $Chandra$ image of NGC 5347 reveals the presence of extended emission dominating the soft X-ray spectrum ($E < 2\,\rm keV$), which coincides with the [O III] emission detected in the $Hubble ~Space~ Telescope$ images. Comparison to other CTAGN suggests that NGC 5347 is broadly consistent with the average properties of this source class. We simulated $XRISM$ and $Athena$/X-IFU spectra of the source, showing the potential of these future missions in identifying CTAGN in the soft X-rays., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The 2017 detection of the inspiral and merger of two neutron stars in gravitational waves and gamma rays was accompanied by a quickly-reddening transient. Such a transient was predicted to occur following a rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis event, which synthesizes neutron-rich, radioactive nuclei and can take place in both dynamical ejecta and in the wind driven off the accretion torus formed after a neutron star merger. We present the first three-dimensional general relativistic, full transport neutrino radiation magnetohydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of the black hole-accretion disk-wind system produced by the GW170817 merger. We show that the small but non-negligible optical depths lead to neutrino transport globally coupling the disk electron fraction, which we capture by solving the transport equation with a Monte Carlo method. The resulting absorption drives up the electron fraction in a structured, continuous outflow, with electron fraction as high as $Y_e\sim 0.4$ in the extreme polar region. We show via nuclear reaction network and radiative transfer calculations that nucleosynthesis in the disk wind will produce a blue kilonova.

We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of narrow emission and absorption lines during photospheric radius expansion (PRE) X-ray bursts from the ultracompact binary 4U 1820-30. NICER observed the source in 2017 August accumulating about 60 ks of exposure. Five thermonuclear X-ray bursts were detected of which four showed clear signs of PRE. We extracted spectra during the PRE phases and fit each to a model that includes a comptonized component to describe the accretion-driven emission, and a black body for the burst thermal radiation. The temperature and spherical emitting radius of the fitted black body are used to assess the strength of PRE in each burst. The two strongest PRE bursts (burst pair 1) had black body temperatures of approximately 0.6 keV and emitting radii of 100 km (at a distance of 8.4 kpc). The other two bursts (burst pair 2) had higher temperatures (~0.67 keV) and smaller radii (75 km). All of the PRE bursts show evidence of narrow line emission near 1 keV. By co-adding the PRE phase spectra of burst pairs 1 and, separately, 2 we find, in both co-added spectra, significant, narrow, spectral features near 1.0 (emission), 1.7 and 3.0 keV (both in absorption). Remarkably, all the fitted line centroids in the co-added spectrum of burst pair 1 appear systematically blue-shifted by a factor of $1.046 \pm 0.006$ compared to the centroids of pair 2, strongly indicative of a gravitational red-shift, a wind-induced blue-shift, or more likely some combination of both effects. The observed shifts are consistent with this scenario in that the stronger PRE bursts in pair 1 reach larger photospheric radii, and thus have weaker gravitational red-shifts, and they generate faster outflows, yielding higher blue-shifts. The merger of neutron star binaries is believed to eject a wide range of heavy elements into the universe. By observing the emission from this ejecta, scientists can probe the ejecta properties (mass, velocity and composition distributions). The emission (a.k.a. kilonova) is powered by the radioactive decay of the heavy isotopes produced in the merger and this emission is reprocessed by atomic opacities to optical and infra-red wavelengths. Understanding the ejecta properties requires calculating the dependence of this emission on these opacities. The strong lines in the optical and infra-red in lanthanide opacities have been shown to significantly alter the light-curves and spectra in these wavelength bands, arguing that the emission in these wavelengths can probe the composition of this ejecta. Here we study variations in the kilonova emission by varying individual lanthanide (and the actinide uranium) concentrations in the ejecta. The broad forest of lanthanide lines makes it difficult to determine the exact fraction of individual lanthanides. Nd is an exception. Its opacities above 1 micron are higher than other lanthanides and observations of kilonovae can potentially probe increased abundances of Nd. Similarly, at early times when the ejecta is still hot (first day), the U opacity is strong in the 0.2-1 micron wavelength range and kilonova observations may also be able to constrain these abundances.

Atoll sources are accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries. We present a spectral analysis of four persistent atoll sources (GX 3+1, 4U 1702$-$429, 4U 0614+091, and 4U 1746$-$371) observed for $\sim20$ ks each with NuSTAR to determine the extent of the inner accretion disk. These sources range from an apparent luminosity of $0.006-0.11$ of the Eddington limit (assuming the empirical limit of $3.8\times10^{38}$ ergs s$^{-1}$). Broad Fe emission features shaped by Doppler and relativistic effects close to the NS were firmly detected in three of these sources. The position of the disk appears to be close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) in each case. For GX 3+1, we determine $R_{in}=1.8^{+0.2}_{-0.6}\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ (90% confidence level) and an inclination of $27^{\circ}-31^{\circ}$. For 4U 1702$-$429, we find a $R_{in}=1.5_{-0.4}^{+1.6}\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ and inclination of $53^{\circ}-64^{\circ}$. For 4U 0614+091, the disk has a position of $R_{in}=1.3_{-0.2}^{+5.4}\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ and inclination of $50^{\circ}-62^{\circ}$. If the disk does not extend to the innermost stable circular orbit, we can place conservative limits on the magnetic field strength in these systems in the event that the disk is truncated at the Alfv\'{e}n radius. This provides the limit at the poles of $B\leq6.7\times10^{8}$ G, $3.3\times10^{8}$ G, and $14.5\times10^{8}$ G for GX 3+1, 4U 1702$-$429, and 4U 0614+091, respectively. For 4U 1746$-$371, we argue that the most plausible explanation for the lack of reflection features is a combination of source geometry and strong Comptonization. Our understanding of the engines and progenitors of gamma-ray bursts has expanded through the ages as a broader set of diagnostics has allowed us to test our understanding of these objects. Here we review the history of the growth in our understanding, focusing on 3 leading engines and 9 potential progenitors. The first gravitational wave detection of a short burst is the latest in a series of breakthrough observations shaping this understanding and we study the importance of multi-diagnostic, multi-messenger observations on these engines and their progenitors. Our understanding based on a detailed study of nearby bursts can be applied to make predictions for the trends expected as we begin to observe high redshift bursts and we discuss these trends., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

The detailed observations of GW170817 proved for the first time directly that neutron star mergers are a major production site of heavy elements. The observations could be fit by a number of simulations that qualitatively agree, but can quantitatively differ (e.g. in total r-process mass) by an order of magnitude. We categorize kilonova ejecta into several typical morphologies motivated by numerical simulations, and apply a radiative transfer Monte Carlo code to study how the geometric distribution of the ejecta shapes the emitted radiation. We find major impacts on both spectra and light curves. The peak bolometric luminosity can vary by two orders of magnitude and the timing of its peak by a factor of five. These findings provide the crucial implication that the ejecta masses inferred from observations around the peak brightness are uncertain by at least an order of magnitude. Mixed two-component models with lanthanide-rich ejecta are particularly sensitive to geometric distribution. A subset of mixed models shows very strong viewing angle dependence due to lanthanide "curtaining," which persists even if the relative mass of lanthanide-rich component is small. The angular dependence is weak in the rest of our models, but different geometric combinations of the two components lead to a highly diverse set of light curves. We identify geometry-dependent {P Cygni} features in late spectra that directly map out strong lines in the simulated opacity of neodymium, which can help to constrain the ejecta geometry and to directly probe the r-process abundances., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures; accepted to ApJ

We report on Chandra gratings spectra of the stellar-mass black hole GRS 1915+105 obtained during a novel, highly obscured state. As the source entered this state, a dense, massive accretion disk wind was detected through strong absorption lines. Photionization modeling indicates that it must originate close to the central engine, orders of magnitude from the outer accretion disk. Strong, nearly sinusoidal flux variability in this phase yielded a key insight: the wind is blue-shifted when its column density is relatively low, but red-shifted as it approaches the Compton-thick threshold. At no point does the wind appear to achieve the local escape velocity; in this sense, it is a "failed wind." Later observations suggest that the disk ultimately fails to keep even the central engine clear of gas, leading to heavily obscured and Compton-thick states characterized by very strong Fe K emission lines. Indeed, these later spectra are successfully described using models developed for obscured AGN. We discuss our results in terms the remarkable similarity of GRS 1915+105 deep in its "obscured state" to Seyfert-2 and Compton-thick AGN, and explore how our understanding of accretion and obscuration in massive black holes is impacted by our observations., Submitted to ApJ

We model a compact black hole-accretion disk system in the collapsar scenario with full transport, frequency dependent, general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics. We examine whether or not winds from a collapsar disk can undergo rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis and significantly contribute to solar r-process abundances. We find the inclusion of accurate transport has significant effects on outflows, raising the electron fraction above $Y_{\rm e} \sim 0.3$ and preventing third peak r-process material from being synthesized. We analyze the time-evolution of neutrino processes and electron fraction in the disk and present a simple one-dimensional model for the vertical structure that emerges. We compare our simulation to semi-analytic expectations and argue that accurate neutrino transport and realistic initial and boundary conditions are required to capture the dynamics and nucleosynthetic outcome of a collapsar., 19 pages, 22 figures. We present the discovery of a low-frequency $\approx 5.7$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) feature in observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 in its soft-intermediate state, obtained in September-October 2017 by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). The feature is relatively broad (compared to other low-frequency QPOs; quality factor $Q\approx 2$) and weak (1.9% rms in 3-10 keV), and is accompanied by a weak harmonic and low-amplitude broadband noise. These characteristics identify it as a weak Type A/B QPO, similar to ones previously identified in the soft-intermediate state of the transient black hole X-ray binary XTE J1550-564. The lag-energy spectrum of the QPO shows increasing soft lags towards lower energies, approaching 50 ms at 1 keV (with respect to a 3-10 keV continuum). This large phase shift has similar amplitude but opposite sign to that seen in Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data for a Type B QPO from the transient black hole X-ray binary GX 339-4. Previous phase-resolved spectroscopy analysis of the Type B QPO in GX 339-4 pointed towards a precessing jet-like corona illuminating the accretion disk as the origin of the QPO signal. We suggest that this QPO in MAXI J1535-571 may have the same origin, with the different lag sign depending on the scale height of the emitting region and the observer inclination angle., Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present a spectral analysis of four coordinated NuSTAR+XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. These exhibit an extreme level of spectral variability, which is primarily due to variable line-of-sight absorption, revealing relatively unobscured states in this source for the first time. Despite the diverse range of absorption states, each of the observations displays the same characteristic signatures of relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk. Through time-resolved spectroscopy we find that the strength of the relativistic iron line and the Compton reflection hump relative to the intrinsic continuum are well correlated, as expected if they are two aspects of the same broadband reflection spectrum. We apply self-consistent disk reflection models to these time-resolved spectra in order to constrain the inner disk parameters, allowing for variable, partially covering absorption to account for the vastly different absorption states observed. Each of the four observations is treated independently to test the consistency of the results obtained for the black hole spin and the disk inclination, which should not vary on observable timescales. We find both the spin and the inclination determined from the reflection spectrum to be consistent, confirming NGC 1365 hosts a rapidly rotating black hole; in all cases the dimensionless spin parameter is constrained to be a* > 0.97 (at 90% statistical confidence or better)., 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Spectral methods provide an elegant and efficient way of numerically solving differential equations of all kinds. For smooth problems, truncation error for spectral methods vanishes exponentially in the infinity norm and $L_2$-norm. However, for non-smooth problems, convergence is significantly worse---the $L_2$-norm of the error for a discontinuous problem will converge at a sub-linear rate and the infinity norm will not converge at all. We explore and improve upon a post-processing technique---optimally convergent mollifiers---to recover exponential convergence from a poorly-converging spectral reconstruction of non-smooth data. This is an important first step towards using these techniques for simulations of realistic systems., 20 pages, 18 figures

In 2006 February, shortly after its launch, Swift began monitoring the center of the Milky Way with the onboard X-Ray Telescope using short 1-ks exposures performed every 1-4 days. Between 2006 and 2014, over 1200 observations have been obtained, amounting to ~1.2 Ms of exposure time. This has yielded a wealth of information about the long-term X-ray behavior of the supermassive black hole Sgr A*, and numerous transient X-ray binaries that are located within the 25'x25' region covered by the campaign. In this review we highlight the discoveries made during these first nine years, which includes 1) the detection of seven bright X-ray flares from Sgr A*, 2) the discovery of the magnetar SGR J1745-29, 3) the first systematic analysis of the outburst light curves and energetics of the peculiar class of very-faint X-ray binaries, 4) the discovery of three new transient X-ray sources, 5) exposing low-level accretion in otherwise bright X-ray binaries, and 6) the identification of a candidate X-ray binary/millisecond radio pulsar transitional object. We also reflect on future science to be done by continuing this Swift's legacy campaign of the Galactic center, which includes high-cadence monitoring of how the interaction between the gaseous object `G2' and Sgr A* plays out in the future., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables.
