I wrote a Creative Non Fiction play based on a true crime. It is called Ingrid’s Dream OR A Murder in Maine. While the play stands on it’s own as a creative work, rich with characters, story, and suspense, it also raises some very important research questions. Ingrid’s Dream OR A Murder in Maine takes an unusual approach to understanding a killer. It deals with characters I created because I care. I care about these characters and their voices. I hope the play asks provocative questions about rage in young men, societal enabling of it, and if people blame themselves in grief. Ingrid’s Dream OR A Murder in Maine speaks to empathy, a mother’s guilt, evil, and how society is implicated when horrific crimes happen. Theatre is a place that reminds us of vulnerability, shame, and the discomfort of sitting in these concepts. This is in part why I chose to merge both a true story with the artistic medium of theatre for my thesis project. It creates a combination that complements my overall research interests and creative practices.
