Half-Heusler thermoelectric materials are potential candidates for high thermoelectric efficiency. We report high-pressure thermoelectric and structural property measurements, density functional theory calculations on the half-Heusler material TiNiSn, and an increase of 15% in the relative dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, around 3 GPa. Thermal and electrical properties were measured utilizing a specialized sample cell assembly designed for the Paris-Edinburgh large-volume press to a maximum pressure of 3.5 GPa. High-pressure structural measurements performed up to 50 GPa in a diamond-anvil cell indicated the emergence of a new high-pressure phase around 20 GPa. A first-principles structure search performed using an ab initio random structure search approach identified the high-pressure phase as an orthorhombic type, in good agreement with the experimental results.

In this work, we report the structural, magnetic and electrical and thermal transport properties of the Heusler-type alloy Ru2NbAl. From the detailed analysis of magnetization data, we infer the presence of superparamagnetically interacting clusters with a Pauli paramagnetic background, while short-range ferromagnetic interaction is developed among the clusters below 5 K. The presence of this ferromagnetic interaction is confirmed through heat capacity measurements. The relatively small value of electronic contribution to specific heat, gamma (~2.7 mJ/mol-K2), as well as the linear nature of temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient indicate a semi-metallic ground state with a pseudo-gap that is also supported by our electronic structure calculations. The activated nature of resistivity is reflected in the observed negative temperature coefficient and has its origin in the charge carrier localization due to antisite defects, inferred from magnetic measurements as well as structural analysis. Although the absolute value of thermoelectric figure of merit is rather low (ZT = 5.2*10-3) in Ru2NbAl, it is the largest among all the reported non-doped full Heusler alloys., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

We report the structural, vibrational and electrical transport properties up to 16 GPa of the 1T-TiTe2, a prominent layered 2D system, which is predicted to show a series of topologically trivial - nontrivial transitions under hydrostatic compression. We clearly show signatures of two iso-structural transition at 2 GPa and 4 GPa obtained from the minima in c/a ratio concomitant with the phonon linewidth anomalies of Eg and A1g modes at around the same pressures, providing strong indication of unusual electron-phonon coupling associated to these transitions. Resistivity presents nonlinear behavior over similar pressure ranges providing a strong indication of the electronic origin of these pressure driven isostructural transitions. Our data thus provide clear evidences of topological changes at A and L point of the Brillouin zone predicted to be present in the compressed 1T-TiTe2. Between 4 GPa and 8 GPa, the c/a ratio shows a plateau suggesting a transformation from an anisotropic 2D layer to a quasi 3D crystal network. First principles calculations suggest that the 2D to quasi 3D evolution without any structural phase transitions is mainly due to the increased interlayer Te-Te interactions (bridging) via the charge density overlap. In addition to the pressure dependent isostructural phase transitions, our data also evidences the occurrence of a first order structural phase transition from the trigonal (P-3m1) phase at higher pressures. We estimate the start of this structural phase transition to be 8 GPa and the symmetric of the new high-pressure phase to be monoclinic (C2/m)., Comment: 22 pages, 11 Figures, 2 Tables

We report calculations of the electronic structure, vibrational properties and transport for the p-type semiconductors, SrAg$Ch$F ($Ch$=S, Se and Te). We find soft phonons with low frequency optical branches intersecting the acoustic modes below 50 $cm^{-1}$, indicative of a material with low thermal conductivity. The bands at and near the valence band maxima are highly two dimensional, which leads to high thermopowers even at high carrier concentrations, which is a combination that suggests good thermoelectric performance. These materials may be regarded as bulk realizations of superlattice thermoelectrics.

\emph{Ab-initio} calculations were performed on the scheelite type MGeO$_4$ (M = Hf, and Zr) compounds which find wide range of applications such as in x-ray imaging. We have studied the high pressure structural stability, elastic constants, electronic structure and optical properties of these compounds through density functional theory calculations. Two different density functional approaches namely plane wave pseudopotential method (PW-PP) and full potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FP-LAPW) were used for the present study. The ground state structural and vibrational properties are calculated and found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The compressibility of Zr and Hf germanates is found to be anisotropic as the a-axis is less compressible over c-axis due to the presence of Ge-O bonds along a-axis which is further confirmed from the ordering of the elastic constants that follows C$_{11}$ $>$ C$_{33}$. The electronic structure of the compounds has been calculated through recently developed Tran Blaha-modified Becke Johnson potential. The calculated electronic structure shows that the compounds are insulators with a gap of 5.39 eV for ZrGeO$_4$ and 6.25 eV for HfGeO$_4$ respectively. Optical anisotropy of these compounds are revealed from the computed optical properties such as complex dielectric function, refractive index, and absorption coefficient. In addition, it is observed that Ti doped ZrGeO$_4$ and HfGeO$_4$ turns out to be a good phosphor as the pristine compounds have the energy gap greater than the visible range upon Ti doping bandgap reduces as a result emission spectra occurs in the visible region and is well explained in the present study.

Electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of marcasite (m) and synthetic pyrite (p) phases of FeX$_2$ (X=Se,Te) have been investigated using first principles density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equation. The plane wave pseudopotential approximation was used to study the structural properties and full-potential linear augmented plane wave method was used to obtain the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties (thermopower and power factor scaled by relaxation time). From total energy calculations we find that m-FeSe$_2$ and m-FeTe$_2$ are stable at ambient conditions and no structural transition from marcasite to pyrite is seen under the application of hydrostatic pressure. The calculated ground state structural properties agree quite well with available experiments. From the calculated thermoelectric properties, we find that both m and p forms are good candidates for thermoelectric applications. However, hole doped m-FeSe$_2$ appears to be the best among all the four systems.

Electronic and transport properties of CuGaTe$_2$, a hole-doped ternary copper based chalcopyrite type semiconductor, are studied using calculations within the Density Functional Theory and solving the Boltzmann transport equation within the constant relaxation time approximation. The electronic bandstructures are calculated by means of the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method, using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The calculated band gap of 1.23 eV is in agreement with the experimental value of 1.2 eV. The carrier concentration- and temperature dependent thermoelectric properties of CuGaTe$_2$ are derived, and a figure of merit of $zT= 1.69$ is obtained at 950 K for a hole concentration of $3.7\cdot10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$, in agreement with a recent experimental finding of $zT= 1.4$, confirming that CuGaTe$_2$ is a promising material for high temperature thermoelectric applications. The good thermoelectric performance of p-type CuGaTe$_2$ is associated with anisotropic transport from a combination of heavy and light bands. Also for CuSbS$_2$ (chalcostibite) a better performance is obtained for p-type than for n-type doping. The variation of the thermopower as a function of temperature and concentration suggests that CuSbS$_2$ will be a good thermoelectric material at low temperatures, similarly to the isostructural CuBiS$_2$ compound.

We investigate the electronic structure of FeTe(0.6)Se(0.4) employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio band structure calculations. Fe 2p core level and the valence band spectra exhibit signature of strong electron correlation in the electronic structure. The electronic states near the Fermi level reduces in intensity with the decrease in temperature in conformity with the insulating transport observed near 300 K. The observation of an insulator to metal transition around 150 K in the transport properties may be related to the spectral lineshape change in the vicinity of the Fermi level observed in this study. The spectral features near Fermi level exhibit significant p orbital character due to the correlation induced Fe d spectral weight transfer. The experimental spectra reveal dominant temperature dependence of the spectral functions possessing large p-character. These results demonstrate significant renormalization of the character of the conduction electrons due to electron correlation and emphasizes the importance of ligand states in the superconductivity of these materials.

The calculated equilibrium lattice constants agree well with the experimental values. The elastic constants of Fe2VAl and Fe2VGa are predicted. From the elastic constants the shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, sound velocities, and Debye temperatures are obtained. By analyzing the ratio between the bulk and shear moduli, we conclude that both Fe2VAl and Fe2VGa are brittle in nature. The computed phonon-dispersion relation shows that both compounds are dynamically stable in the L21 structure without any imaginary phonon frequencies. The isomer shifts in Fe in the two compounds are discussed in terms of the Fe s partial density of states, which reveal larger ionicity/less hybridization in Fe2VGa than in Fe2VAl. For the same reason the Cauchy pressure is negative in Fe2VAl but positive in Fe2VGa

The structural behavior of CsCdF3 under pressure is investigated by means of theory and experiment. High-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 60 GPa using synchrotron radiation. The cubic Pm3̅ m crystal symmetry persists throughout this pressure range. Electronic structure calculations were carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the local-density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation effects. The calculated ground-state properties-the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus and elastic constants-are in good agreement with experimental results. The calculations reveal that CsCdF3 is an indirect-gap insulator under ambient conditions, with the gap increasing under pressure.

In the search for new spintronic materials with high spin-polarization at room-temperature, we have synthesized an osmium based double perovskite with a Curie-temperature of 725 K. Our combined experimental results confirm the existence of a sizable induced magnetic moment at the Os site, supported by band-structure calculations in agreement with a proposed kinetic energy driven mechanism of ferrimagnetism in these compounds. The intriguing property of Sr2CrOsO6 is that it is at the endpoint of a metal-insulator transition due to 5d band filling, and at the same time ferrimagnetism and high-spin polarization is preserved., including corrected table 1

We find that the cubic Pm\bar{3}m crystal symmetry persists throughout the pressure range studied. By analyzing the ratio between the bulk and shear modulii, we conclude that KMgF_3 is brittle in nature. A detailed theoretical study on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of half-metallic ferromagnet CrO$_2$ was carried out by means of relativistic full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to the exchange correlation potential. Our calculation favours the [001] magnetization axis to be the easy axis of magnetization when compared to the [100] axis which is in agreement with the experiments. The calculated spin and orbital magnetic moments of Cr agrees well with the experimental and other theoretical works. The Cr L$_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra were calculated for both the quantization axis and compared with the experiment. In addition the oxygen K edge and XMCD spectra were also calculated which compares well with the experiments. The XMCD sum rules were used to compute the spin and orbital magnetic moments and results agree quite well with the direct calculation.

We have investigated the magnetic moment of the W ion in the ferrimagnetic double perovskites Sr2CrWO6 and Ca2CrWO6 by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the W L(2,3) edges. In both compounds a finite negative spin and positive orbital magnetic moment was detected. The experimental results are in good agreement with band-structure calculations for (Sr/Ca)2CrWO6 using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. It is remarkable, that the magnetic ordering temperature, TC, is correlated with the magnetic moment at the 'non-magnetic' W atom., Comment: accepted for publication
