This review article gives an overview of the current state of the art of bladder cancer imaging and then discusses in depth the scientific and technical merit of a novel imaging approach, tracing its evolution from murine cancer models to cancer patients. While the poor resolution of soft tissue obtained by widely available imaging options such as abdominal sonography and radiation-based CT leaves them only suitable for measuring the gross tumor volume and bladder wall thickening, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resolution imaging (DCE MRI) is demonstrably superior in resolving muscle invasion. However, major barriers still exist in its adoption. Laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains controversial, especially for tumors larger than 5 cm. We compared the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic and open liver resection (OLR) for large HCC.Patients with large HCC after curative hepatectomy were enrolled. To compare the short-term outcomes, propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) were performed to reduce the effect of confounding factors, respectively. Subsequently, Cox-regression analyses were conducted to identify the independent risk factors associated with decreased recurrence-free survival (RFS) and poor overall survival (OS).There were 265 patients enrolled in the final analysis: 146 who underwent OLR and 119 who underwent LLR. There was no significant difference between the OLR and LLR groups according to PSM and IPTW analysis (all P 0.05). Multivariable analysis revealed that LLR was not independently associated with poorer OS (HR 1.15, 95% CI 0.80-1.67, P = 0.448) or RFS (HR 1.22, 95% CI 0.88-1.70, P = 0.238).There were no significant differences in perioperative complications or long-term prognosis between LLR and OLR for large HCC, which provides evidence for standard laparoscopic surgical practice with adequate surgeon experience and careful patient selection.

Longitudinal tracking of skin lesions - finding correspondence, changes in morphology, and texture - is beneficial to the early detection of melanoma. However, it has not been well investigated in the context of full-body imaging. We propose a novel framework combining geometric and texture information to localize skin lesion correspondence from a source scan to a target scan in total body photography (TBP). Body landmarks or sparse correspondence are first created on the source and target 3D textured meshes. Every vertex on each of the meshes is then mapped to a feature vector characterizing the geodesic distances to the landmarks on that mesh. Then, for each lesion of interest (LOI) on the source, its corresponding location on the target is first coarsely estimated using the geometric information encoded in the feature vectors and then refined using the texture information. We evaluated the framework quantitatively on both a public and a private dataset, for which our success rates (at 10 mm criterion) are comparable to the only reported longitudinal study. As full-body 3D capture becomes more prevalent and has higher quality, we expect the proposed method to constitute a valuable step in the longitudinal tracking of skin lesions., MICCAI-2023

The Cryogenian Period (720–635 Million years ago, Ma) hosts sedimentary and geochronological evidence for two long-lived global-scale glaciations during the Sturtian (ca. 717–660 Ma) and Marinoan (ca. 650–635 Ma) cryochrons. Radiometric and chemostratigraphic data, in addition to climate modelling, support an approximately synchronous global deglaciation from the Sturtian cryochron, followed by a non-glacial interval (ca. 660–650 Ma) with abundant globally-distributed marine sedimentary successions. The palaeontological record of Cryogenian non-glacial successions is dominated by microfossils and problematic macrofossils, some of which have been interpreted as possible sponge-grade organisms. Biomarker analyses also hint at the rise to dominance of green algae and the possible first appearance of demospongiae during this interval. Oxygen and nutrient availability can fuel biotic complexity, however Cryogenian non-glacial palaeoredox and palaeonutrient (e.g. phosphorus, P) dynamics are poorly understood. Furthermore, while regional lithostratigraphic and chemostratigraphic correlations of carbonate-dominated Cryogenian non-glacial sedimentary successions are well documented, the temporal calibration of globally distributed carbonate and siliciclastic successions has not been attempted. Without a global chronostratigraphic age framework, the regional versus global nature of geochemical responses to Earth System perturbations and the sequence of biotic events throughout this interval remain obscured. Here we present new high resolution palaeoredox and P phase association data from five globally distributed Cryogenian non-glacial drill core successions. The combination of Fe speciation and trace element palaeoredox reconstructions with P speciation data clearly show dynamic changes to bioavailable P recycling in response to local and global scale nutrient-driven palaeomarine redox conditions. We also present a new global Cryogenian non-glacial chronostratigraphic framework for the calibration, in relative time, of geochemical and palaeontological data from carbonate and siliciclastic-dominated successions. This enables our new data to be interpreted in the context of the highly dynamic global C and S cycles and biotic record throughout this interval. This approach, in combination with new insights from climate models that constrain changes to atmospheric CO2 and temperature, sheds new light on the mechanisms for global changes to ocean redox and nutrients, and possible drivers for a possible increase in biotic diversity throughout this interval.

Background and aimsAn increasing number of studies have confirmed that non-textbook outcomes (non-TO) are a risk factor for the long-term outcome of malignant tumors. It is particularly important to identify the predictive factors of non-TO to improve the quality of surgical treatment. We attempted to construct two nomograms for preoperative and postoperative prediction of non-TO after laparoscopic hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).MethodsPatients who underwent curative-intent hepatectomy for HCC between 2014 and 2021 at two Chinese hospitals were analyzed. Using univariate and multivariate analyses, the independent predictors of non-TO were identified. The prediction accuracy is accurately measured by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve. ROC curves for the preoperative and postoperative models, Child–Pugh grade, BCLC staging, and 8th TNM staging were compared relative to predictive accuracy for non-TO.ResultsAmong 515 patients, 286 patients (55.5%) did not achieve TO in the entire cohort. Seven and eight independent risk factors were included in the preoperative and postoperative predictive models by multivariate logistic regression analysis, respectively. The areas under the ROC curves for the postoperative and preoperative models, Child–Pugh grade, BCLC staging, and 8th TNM staging in predicting non-TO were 0.762, 0.698, 0.579, 0.569, and 0.567, respectively.ConclusionOur proposed preoperative and postoperative nomogram models were able to identify patients at high risk of non-TO following laparoscopic resection of HCC, which may guide clinicians to make individualized surgical decisions, improve postoperative survival, and plan adjuvant therapy against recurrence.

Primary liver cancer is the second leading cause of tumor-related deaths in China, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounting for 80%–90% of these. Since there is a lack of symptoms in the early stages of HCC, a large proportion of patients were identified with unresectable HCC when diagnosed. Due to the severe resistance to chemotherapy, patients with advanced HCC were traditionally treated with systematic therapy in the past decades, and the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) sorafenib has remained the only treatment option for advanced HCC since 2008. Immunotherapies, particularly immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), have shown a strong anti-tumor effect and have been supported by several guidelines recently. ICIs, for example programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors such as nivolumab and pembrolizumab, programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors such as atezolizumab, and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) inhibitors such as ipilimumab, the ICI-based combination with TKIs, and VEGF-neutralizing antibody or systematic or local anti-tumor therapies, are being further studied in clinical trials. However, immune-related adverse events (irAEs) including cutaneous toxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity, and hepatotoxicity may lead to the termination of ICI treatment or even threaten patients’ lives. This review aims to summarize currently available immunotherapies and introduce the irAEs and their managements in order to provide references for clinical application and further research.

The impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still unclear. The present study aims to draw a firm conclusion in terms of evaluating the impact of DM on the prognosis of HCC after hepatectomy.The pattern of recurrence for HCC was often stratified into early-stage (2 years) and late-stage (≥2 years) recurrence. Because the early-stage recurrence was mainly attributed to aggressive tumor pathological characteristics, patients who recurrence or die within 2 years were excluded. Cumulative overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were determined by the method of Kaplan-Meier, and the independent risk factors of OS/RFS were determined by Cox regression analysis.A total of 426 patients were eventually included. The 3- and 5-year OS in patients with and without DM was 83.7%, 55.1%; and 90.9%, 77.4%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that DM was an independent risk factor for OS (HR 1.166, 95% CI 1.056-2.036,DM is an independent risk factor for long-term prognosis in patients with HCC. Patients with DM after hepatectomy for HCC, thus, need to actively control DM and closer follow-up.

The annual burden of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) is enormous, and environmental factors may have a vital role in respiratory infections. This study aimed to investigate the potential effects of the atmospheric environment on SARI. A time-series analysis was performed on the relationship between atmospheric environment and 136,989 SARI cases by distributed lag non-linear model. Wind speed, PM10, PM2.5, O3, and CO exhibited differential effects at a range of lag times or exposure ranges. Air pressure, temperature, and diurnal temperature range showed risk effects in the full range. The lag effect of high pollution was stronger, appeared earlier, and lasted longer than that of low pollution. Most environmental factors had a certain non-linear lag relationship with SARI. Low wind speed and high air pollution may be increasing risk factors for SARI.

Although the expiration date of non-perishable food only indicates whether the food is still in its peak quality, consumers tend to misinterpret the meaning of the expiration date and thus avoid purchasing near-expiry food. Due to such aversion to food close to expiration dates, a huge amount of non-perishable food is wasted due to being unsold and thus uneaten every year. The current research explores a novel solution to mitigate consumers' aversion to near-expiry non-perishable food at the purchase stage. Drawing on the literature on consumer impatience, we propose a hedonic myopia hypothesis. Specifically, when hedonic (vs. utilitarian) benefits of non-perishable food are emphasized, consumers desire to consume it immediately and disregard delayed consequences. Hence, they become less averse to near-expiry food. We find convergent support for the hedonic myopia hypothesis and the impatience-based mechanism through various methods, including an analysis of actual sales data from an online store, a field experiment, and a randomized controlled experiment. The demonstrated hedonic myopia effect provides important theoretical and practical implications.

Metal stable isotopic composition of dental enamel is a novel proxy for reconstructing human dietary structure. Magnesium is the second most prevalent element in teeth only after calcium. Significant isotopic fractionation of Mg isotopes during biological processes implies its great advantages in reconstructing human recipes. To evaluate the potential of the Mg isotopic composition of dental enamel in learning the human dietary structure, elemental and Mg isotopic analyses were performed on the modern human teeth from regions in northern and southern China with various dietary characteristics. Our findings reveal that southern Chinese teeth enamel has higher Mg contents and heavier Mg isotopic compositions (-0.69‰ for SN and -0.66‰ for Hangzhou) than those of their northern counterparts (−1.27‰ for Weinan and −1.33‰ for Puyang). Such discrepancy cannot be attributed to the provenance heterogeneity or individual metabolic processes. Instead, the correlations between cereal-based dietary patterns and the δ26Mg in dental enamel demonstrate that the structure of the staple diet is more responsible for the Mg isotopic signatures. Moreover, heavier Mg isotopic compositions have been observed in dental enamel of individuals with higher rice and lower wheat in the diet, indicating that Mg isotopes are a promising tracer for rebuilding individual or population plant-based dietary structures as well as distinguishing more specific species within C3 plants. These findings suggest that Mg isotopes in teeth enamel have the great potential to better identify the food composition and constrain the diet structure of ancient humans.

Although anatomical hepatectomy (AH) is widely used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the prognosis is still unsatisfactory. The present study aimed to evaluate the survival benefit of adjuvant transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for patients with HCC after AH. A total of 832 patients were stratified into with adjuvant TACE (443, 53.2%) and without adjuvant TACE group (389, 46.8%) AH. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to control for confounding factors, and multivariable Cox regression was performed to determine the independent risk factors. After PSM, the results showed that the adjuvant TACE group had better overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Among the patients with tumor recurrence, adjuvant TACE was associated with a high rate of early-stage tumor at recurrence, a lower recurrence rate around the frontal margin and extrahepatic metastases, and a higher rate of receiving curative treatment. Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that adjuvant TACE was an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR 0.673, P = 0.001) and RFS (HR 0.650, P = 0.001). Patients with HCC after AH can benefit from postoperative adjuvant TACE. Therefore, adjuvant TACE should be considered for patients with a high risk of recurrence.

To achieve highly efficient electromagnetic wave absorber, elaborately designing magnetic–dielectric Co@TiO2 microspheres with core–shell configuration are successfully constructed through a facile sequential process of liquid phase reduction–sol–gel–annealing. Owing to the core–shell configuration and the synergistic effect among magnetic and dielectric components, the annealed sample shows outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) in X and Ku band. Impressively, a maximum reflection loss (RLmax) is reached –56.6 dB at a coating thickness of 2.3 mm with corresponding effective absorption bandwidth (EAB10) of 7.2 GHz (including 65% of Ku band and 82.5% of X band), much stronger than those of as-prepared Co (EAB10 of 1.6 GHz, RLmax of 14.6 dB) and pristine Co@TiO2 (EAB10 of 2.9 GHz, RLmax of 16.3 dB). An EAB10 covering completely the whole X and Ku band could be obtained by controlling the thickness only from 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm. The composites have both outstanding RL and wide EAB10 with the thin coating thickness, reinforcing that fabricating core–shell configuration composites is an efficient strategy to boost the EMA efficiency.

Air-stable ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are fabricated from the active layers of π-conjugated polymer and elastomer composites. Compared to the p-channel dominant charge transport behavior of pure donor–acceptor-type copolymer semiconductors, the polymer composites exhibited superior ambipolar charge transport characteristics with well-balanced and high electron and hole mobilities, both of more than 1.0 cm2/Vs. Moreover, these OFETs exhibited significantly improved air stabilities, particularly in the n-channel regime, which is because the encapsulation effect of the nanofibril conjugated polymers surrounded by the elastomer matrix efficiently suppressed electron trapping. At the optimal composition, spinodal decomposition of the constituent polymers is induced, forming fibrillar network structures during the solution casting and thermal annealing processes. These anisotropic polymer aggregates embedded in the elastomer matrix are induced to align in a direction parallel to the channel by directional printing techniques, such as off-centered spin coating and bar coating. This strategy of controlling the semiconductor film morphology is beneficial for the fabrication of high-performance and air-stable complementary-like electronic circuits. Furthermore, the embedded nanofibril morphology in a deformable elastomer can be widely used to realize stretchable optoelectronic devices.

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics, neurosurgical strategy and curative effect of intracranial invastive olfactory neuroblastoma. Methods A total of 24 patients with intracranial invasive olfactory neuroblastoma diagnosed and treated in Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2005 to December 2020 were included. All patients underwent bilateral extended transbasal approach combined with endoscopic transnasal approach and skull base reconstruction. Results Among the 24 patients, total resection was performed in 22 cases (91.67%) and nearly total resection in 2 cases (8.33%), all of which were confirmed as olfactory neuroblastoma by postoperative pathological examination. Transient cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurred in 2 cases (8.33%) and intracranial infection occurred in 2 cases (8.33%), which were cured by symptomatic treatment. Visual acuity was aggravated in one case and eye movement disorder in 2 cases. Twenty patients were followed up for an average of 54.60 months, and no long⁃term operation related complications occurred. During the follow⁃up period, 12 patients (60%) had tumor recurrence, and the 5⁃year survival rate was 45% (9/20). Conclusions Surgical resection of intracranial invasive olfactory neuroblastoma via extended transbasal approach combined with endoscopic transnasal approach is safe and effective. The operative surgeon should have both microneurosurgery and neuroendoscopy techniques, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

The quantum Hall effect can be substantially affected by interfacial coupling between the host two-dimensional electron gases and the substrate, and has been predicted to give rise to exotic topological states. Yet the understanding of the underlying physics and the controllable engineering of this interaction remains challenging. Here we demonstrate the observation of an unusual quantum Hall effect, which differs markedly from that of the known picture, in graphene samples in contact with an antiferromagnetic insulator CrOCl equipped with dual gates. Two distinct quantum Hall phases are developed, with the Landau levels in monolayer graphene remaining intact at the conventional phase, but largely distorted for the interfacial-coupling phase. The latter quantum Hall phase is even present close to the absence of a magnetic field, with the consequential Landau quantization following a parabolic relation between the displacement field and the magnetic field. This characteristic prevails up to 100 K in a wide effective doping range from 0 to 1013 cm−2., This dataset contains electrical transport tests, which are related to the manuscript of "Quantum Hall phase in graphene engineered by interfacial charge coupling".

Background & aimsThe long-term prognosis of patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) and hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC) after radical hepatectomy remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of MS on long-term survival for patients with HBV-related HCC after hepatectomy.MethodsPatients with HBV-HCC after hepatectomy were included. Patients were stratified into MS-HBV-HCC and HBV-HCC groups. Clinical features and surgical outcomes were compared between the two groups, and COX regression analysis was used to determine independent risk factors associated with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS).Result389 patients (MS-HBV-HCC group: n=50, HBV-HCC group: n=339) were enrolled for further analysis. Baseline characteristics showed that patients with MS-HBV-HCC were associated with a high rate of elderly patients, ASA score, and co-morbid illness, but a lower rate of anatomy hepatectomy. There were no significant differences in perioperative complications. After excluding patients who relapsed or died within 90 days after surgery, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed MS was an independent risk factor of OS (HR 1.68, 95% CI 1.05-2.70, P = 0.032) and RFS (HR 1.78, 95% CI 1.24-2.57, P = 0.002).ConclusionMS is an independent risk factor for poor OS and RFS in HBV-infected HCC patients after radical hepatectomy. This suggests that we need to strengthen postoperative follow-up of the relevant population and encourage patients to develop a healthy lifestyle.

Split liver transplantation (SLT) is a complex procedure. The left-lateral and right tri-segment splits are the most common surgical approaches and are based on the Couinaud liver segmentation theory. Notably, the liver surface following right tri-segment splits may exhibit different degrees of ischemic changes related to the destruction of the local portal vein blood flow topology. There is currently no consensus on preoperative evaluation and predictive strategy for hepatic segmental necrosis after SLT.To investigate the application of the topological approach in liver segmentation based on 3D visualization technology in the surgical planning of SLT.Clinical data of 10 recipients and 5 donors who underwent SLT at Shenzhen Third People's Hospital from January 2020 to January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Before surgery, all the donors were subjected to 3D modeling and evaluation. Based on the 3D-reconstructed models, the liver splitting procedure was simulated using the liver segmentation system described by Couinaud and a blood flow topology liver segmentation (BFTLS) method. In addition, the volume of the liver was also quantified. Statistical indexes mainly included the hepatic vasculature and expected volume of split grafts evaluated by 3D models, the actual liver volume, and the ischemia state of the hepatic segments during the actual surgery.Among the 5 cases of split liver surgery, the liver was split into a left-lateral segment and right tri-segment in 4 cases, while 1 case was split using the left and right half liver splitting. All operations were successfully implemented according to the preoperative plan. According to Couinaud liver segmentation system and BFTLS methods, the volume of the left lateral segment was 359.00 ± 101.57 mL and 367.75 ± 99.73 mL, respectively, while that measured during the actual surgery was 397.50 ± 37.97 mL. The volume of segment IV (the portion of ischemic liver lobes) allocated to the right tri-segment was 136.31 ± 86.10 mL, as determined using the topological approach to liver segmentation. However, during the actual surgical intervention, ischemia of the right tri-segment section was observed in 4 cases, including 1 case of necrosis and bile leakage, with an ischemic liver volume of 238.7 mL.3D visualization technology can guide the preoperative planning of SLT and improve accuracy during the intervention. The simulated operation based on 3D visualization of blood flow topology may be useful to predict the degree of ischemia in the liver segment and provide a reference for determining whether the ischemic liver tissue should be removed during the surgery.

Nutritional stress is one of the major factors affecting the health of honey bees. Supplementing the pollen patty with microalgae enhances the protein content of the patty and therefore is supposed to improve bee’s health. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of Chlorella as a dietary supplement on the health and physiology of the honey bee (Apis mellifera). We formulated the honey bee feed by supplementing Chlorella sorokiniana, obtained commercially, with commercially available rapeseed pollen patty in different amounts—0.5, 2, 5, and 10%, and the treatment groups were named P0.5, P2, P5, and P10, respectively. Pollen patty was set as a positive control and only 50% sucrose solution (no protein) was set as a negative control. Diets were supplied ad libitum to newly emerged workers in cages; food consumption patterns; longevity; and physiology including the development of the brain in terms of protein (i.e., total amino acids), thorax muscle, fat body mass, and glands (hypopharyngeal and venom); and gene expression of nutrition-related gene vitellogenin (Vg) of honey bee at different points of time of their age were observed. The addition of Chlorella significantly increased the food consumption pattern, longevity, gland development, muscle formation, and Vg gene expression significantly in comparison to only a pollen or sugar diet. However, the response varied depending on the level of Chlorella supplementation. As depicted in most of the cases, P2, that is, the pollen diet with 2% of Chlorella supplement exhibited the best outcome in terms of all the tested parameters. Therefore, based on the results obtained in the present study, we concluded that 2% Chlorella supplementation to pollen patty could enhance the health of honey bees, which in turn improves their performance.

AIM: To compare the change of anterior chamber angle(ACA)and vault value before and after implantable collamer lens(ICL)in two implant positions.METHODS: Randomized controlled study. A total of 83 patients(154 eyes)underwent ICL(V4c, 12.6mm)surgery from 2018 to 2019 were enrolled and divided into two randomly, including into horizontal group(79 eyes)and into vertical group(75 eyes). Pentacam was used to measure the ACA at 0°, 90°, 180°, 270° points before and after implantation and the ACA changes were calculated.RESULTS: After 12mo, the changes of ACA at 0°, 90°, 180°, 270° position were 15.3°±6.1°, 13.9°±6.3°, 16.5°±5.5° and 12.9°±6.0° in horizontal group while 12.9°±3.7°, 14.5°±6.8°, 14.3°±5.4° and 13.2°±5.9° in vertical group. Background and aimsRecently, the effectiveness of “textbook outcomes (TO)” in the evaluation of surgical quality has been recognized by more and more scholars. This study tended to examine the association between preoperative albumin–bilirubin (ALBI) grades and the incidence of achieving or not achieving TO (non-TO) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing laparoscopic hepatectomy.MethodsThe patients were stratified into two groups: ALBI grade 1 (ALBI ≤ -2.60) and ALBI grade 2/3 (ALBI > -2.60). The characteristics of patients and the incidence of non-TO were compared. Multivariate analyses were performed to determine whether ALBI grade was independently associated with TO.ResultsIn total, 378 patients were enrolled, including 194 patients (51.3%) in the ALBI grade 1 group and 184 patients (48.7%) in the ALBI grade 2/3 group. In the whole cohort, 198 patients (52.4%) did not achieve TO, and the incidence of non-TO in the ALBI grade 2/3 group was obviously higher than that in the ALBI grade 1 group (n = 112, 60.9% vs. n = 86, 44.3%, P = 0.001). The multivariate analyses showed that ALBI grade 2/3 was an independent risk factor for non-TO (OR: 1.95, 95%CI: 1.30–2.94, P = 0.023).ConclusionsMore than half (52.4%) of the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma did not achieve TO after laparoscopic hepatectomy, and preoperative ALBI grade 2/3 was significantly associated with non-TO. Improving the liver function reserve of patients before operation, thereby reducing the ALBI grade, may increase the probability for patients to reach TO and enable patients to benefit more from surgery.

Thrombectomy and anatomical anastomosis (TAA) has long been considered the optimal approach to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in liver transplantation (LT). However, TAA and the current approach for non-physiological portal reconstructions are associated with a higher rate of complications and mortality in some cases.To describe a new choice for reconstructing the portal vein through a posterior pancreatic tunnel (RPVPPT) to address cases of unresectable PVT.Between August 2019 and August 2021, 245 adult LTs were performed. Forty-five (18.4%) patients were confirmed to have PVT before surgery, among which seven underwent PV reconstructionDuring the procedure, PVT was found in all the seven cases with significant adhesion to the vascular wall and could not be dissected. The portal vein proximal to the superior mesenteric vein was damaged in one case when attempting thrombolectomy, resulting in massive bleeding. LT was successfully performed in all patients with a mean duration of 585 min (range 491-756 min) and mean intraoperative blood loss of 800 mL (range 500-3000 mL). Postoperative complications consisted of chylous leakage (The RPVPPT technique might be a safe and effective surgical procedure during LT for complex PVT. However, follow-up studies with large samples are still warranted due to the relatively small number of cases.

This article provides a synopsis of current progress made in fundamental studies of lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) after spinal cord injury (SCI) above the sacral level. Animal models of SCI allowed us to examine the effects of SCI on the micturition control and the underlying neurophysiological processes of SCI-induced LUTD. Urine storage and elimination are the two primary functions of the LUT, which are governed by complicated regulatory mechanisms in the central and peripheral nervous systems. These neural systems control the action of two functional units in the LUT: the urinary bladder and an outlet consisting of the bladder neck, urethral sphincters, and pelvic-floor striated muscles. During the storage phase, the outlet is closed, and the bladder is inactive to maintain a low intravenous pressure and continence. In contrast, during the voiding phase, the outlet relaxes, and the bladder contracts to facilitate adequate urine flow and bladder emptying. SCI disrupts the normal reflex circuits that regulate co-ordinated bladder and urethral sphincter function, leading to involuntary and inefficient voiding. Following SCI, a spinal micturition reflex pathway develops to induce an overactive bladder condition following the initial areflexic phase. In addition, without proper bladder–urethral-sphincter coordination after SCI, the bladder is not emptied as effectively as in the normal condition. Previous studies using animal models of SCI have shown that hyperexcitability of C-fiber bladder afferent pathways is a fundamental pathophysiological mechanism, inducing neurogenic LUTD, especially detrusor overactivity during the storage phase. SCI also induces neurogenic LUTD during the voiding phase, known as detrusor sphincter dyssynergia, likely due to hyperexcitability of Aδ-fiber bladder afferent pathways rather than C-fiber afferents. The molecular mechanisms underlying SCI-induced LUTD are multifactorial; previous studies have identified significant changes in the expression of various molecules in the peripheral organs and afferent nerves projecting to the spinal cord, including growth factors, ion channels, receptors and neurotransmitters. These findings in animal models of SCI and neurogenic LUTD should increase our understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms of LUTD after SCI for the future development of novel therapies for SCI patients with LUTD.

Consumers have an aversion to purchasing near-expiry food products, which leads to enormous food waste and economic loss. Given the importance of this issue, past research has studied the effect of impending expiration date on product sales, but its focus has been limited to perishable food products. Since the expiration dates of non-perishable food products are treated as less important than those of perishable food products, we expect that the resulting effect on sales largely varies by shopping environment. With the growing importance of online shopping in food sales, we examine how the effect of impending expiration date differs between mobile and PC shopping environments. By analyzing a unique data set from an online salvage store, we find that consumer aversion toward near-expiry products is more salient in the PC shopping environment than in the mobile shopping environment. However, when there is a deeper price promotion, the between-channel difference is reduced as the sensitivity of an impending expiration date on sales increases in the mobile shopping environment. These findings not only represent novel contributions to the literature but also provide managerial implications for practitioners.
