The presence of a small concentration of in-plane Fe dopants in La$_{1.87}$Sr$_{0.13}$Cu$_{0.99}$Fe$_{0.01}$O$_4$ is known to enhance stripe-like spin and charge density wave (SDW and CDW) order, and suppress the superconducting $T_c$. Here, we show that it also induces highly two-dimensional (2D) superconducting correlations that have been argued to be signatures of a new form of superconducting order, so-called pair-density-wave (PDW) order. In addition, using the resonant soft x-ray scattering, we find that the 2D superconducting fluctuation is strongly associated with the CDW stripe. In particular, the PDW signature first appears when the correlation length of the CDW stripe grows over eight times the lattice unit ($\sim$ 8$a$). Background: Phase Three of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) measured the global prevalence of symptoms of asthma in children. We undertook comprehensive analyses addressing risk factors for asthma symptoms in combination, at both the individual and the school level, to explore the potential role of reverse causation due to selective avoidance or confounding by indication. Objective: To explore the role of reverse causation in risk factors of asthma symptoms. Methods: We compared two sets of multilevel logistic regression analyses, using (a) individual level exposure data and (b) school level average exposure (ie prevalence), in two different age groups. In individual level analyses, reverse causation is a possible concern if individual level exposure statuses were changed as a result of asthma symptoms or diagnosis. School level analyses may suffer from ecologic confounding, but reverse causation is less of a concern because individual changes in exposure status as a result of asthma symptoms would only have a small effect on overall school exposure levels. Results: There were 131 924 children aged 6-7 years (2428 schools, 25 countries) with complete exposure, outcome and confounder data. The strongest associations in individual level analyses (fully adjusted) were for current paracetamol use (odds ratio = 2.06; 95% confidence interval 1.97-2.16), early life antibiotic use (1.65; 1.58-1.73) and open fire cooking (1.44; 1.26-1.65). In school level analyses, these risk factors again showed increased risks. There were 238 586 adolescents aged 13-14 years (2072 schools, 42 countries) with complete exposure, outcome and confounder data. The strongest associations in individual level analyses (fully adjusted) were for current paracetamol use (1.80; 1.75-1.86), cooking on an open fire (1.32; 1.22-1.43) and maternal tobacco use (1.23; 1.18-1.27). In school level analyses, these risk factors again showed increased risks. Conclusions & clinical relevance: These analyses strengthen the potentially causal interpretation of previously reported individual level findings, by providing evidence against reverse causation.

The recently demonstrated x-ray scattering approach using a free electron laser with a high field pulsed magnet has opened new opportunities to explore the charge density wave (CDW) order in cuprate high temperature superconductors. Using this approach, we substantially degrade the superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 33 T to investigate the onset of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ at low temperatures near a putative quantum critical point (QCP) at $p_1\sim $ 0.08 holes per Cu. We find no CDW can be detected in a sample with a doping concentration less than $p_1$. Our results indicate that the onset of the CDW ground state lies inside the zero-field superconducting dome, and broken translational symmetry is associated with the putative QCP at $p_1$, Comment: 4 figures

One of the central questions in the cuprate research is the nature of the "normal state" which develops into high temperature superconductivity (HTSC). In the normal state of hole-doped cuprates, the existence of charge density wave (CDW) is expected to shed light on the mechanism of HTSC. With evidence emerging for CDW order in the electron-doped cuprates, the CDW would be thought to be a universal phenomenon in high-$T_c$ cuprates. However, the CDW phenomena in electron-doped cuprate are quite different than those in hole-doped cuprates. Here we study the nature of the putative CDW in an electron-doped cuprate through direct comparisons between as-grown and post-annealed Nd$_{1.86}$Ce$_{0.14}$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) single crystals using Cu $L_3$-edge resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The RSXS result reveals that the non-superconducting NCCO shows the same reflections at the wavevector (~1/4, 0, $l$) as like the reported superconducting NCCO. This superconductivity-insensitive signal is quite different with the characteristics of the CDW reflection in hole-doped cuprates. Moreover, the ARPES result suggests that the fermiology cannot account for such wavevector. Compelling efforts to improve the critical temperature ($T_{c}$) of superconductors have been made through high-pressure application. Understanding the underlying mechanism behind such improvements is critically important, however, much remains unclear. Here we studied ortho-III YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.73}$ (YBCO) using x-ray scattering under hydrostatic-pressure (HP) up to ~6.0 GPa. We found the reinforced oxygen order (OO) of YBCO under HP, revealing an oxygen rearrangement in the Cu-O layer, which evidently shows the charge transfer phenomenon between the CuO$_{2}$ plane and Cu-O layer. Concurrently, we also observed no disorder-pinned charge density wave (CDW) signature in CuO$_{2}$ plane under HP. This indicates that the oxygen rearrangement modifies the quenched disorder state in the CuO$_{2}$ plane. Using these results, we appropriately explain why pressure-condition can achieve higher $T_{c}$ compared with the optimal $T_{c}$ under ambient pressure in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$. As an implication of these results, finally, we have discussed that the change in disorder could make it easier for YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ to undergo a transition to the nematic order under an external magnetic field., 24 pages, 6 figures

Here it is demonstrated that multiple-energy, anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering (ASAXS) provides significant enhancement in sensitivity to internal material boundaries of layered nanoparticles compared with the traditional modeling of a single scattering energy, even for cases in which high scattering contrast naturally exists. Specifically, the material-specific structure of monodispersed Fe₃O₄|γ-Mn₂O₃ core|shell nanoparticles is determined, and the contribution of each component to the total scattering profile is identified with unprecedented clarity. We show that Fe₃O₄|γ-Mn₂O₃ core|shell nanoparticles with a diameter of 8.2 ± 0.2 nm consist of a core with a composition near Fe₃O₄ surrounded by a (Mn(x)Fe(1-x))₃O₄ shell with a graded composition, ranging from x ≈ 0.40 at the inner shell toward x ≈ 0.46 at the surface. Evaluation of the scattering contribution arising from the interference between material-specific layers additionally reveals the presence of Fe₃O₄ cores without a coating shell. Finally, it is found that the material-specific scattering profile shapes and chemical compositions extracted by this method are independent of the original input chemical compositions used in the analysis, revealing multiple-energy ASAXS as a powerful tool for determining internal nanostructured morphology even if the exact composition of the individual layers is not known a priori.

We report the formation of a novel ferromagnetic state in the antiferromagnet BiFeO3 at the interface with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at Mn and Fe L2,3-edges, we discovered that the development of this ferromagnetic spin structure is strongly associated with the onset of a significant exchange bias. Our results demonstrate that the magnetic state is directly related with an electronic orbital reconstruction at the interface, which is supported by the linearly polarized x-ray absorption measurement at oxygen K-edge., 17 pages, 4 figures, PRL in press

Hollow atoms in which the K shell is empty while the outer shells are populated allow studying a variety of important and unusual properties of atoms. The diagram x-ray emission lines of such atoms, the K-h alpha(1,2) hypersatellites (HSs), were measured for the 3d transition metals, Z=23-30, with a high energy resolution using photoexcitation by monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Good agreement with ab initio relativistic multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock calculations was found. The measured HS intensity variation with the excitation energy yields accurate values for the excitation thresholds, excludes contributions from shake-up processes, and indicates domination near threshold of a nonshake process. The Z variation of the HS shifts from the diagram line K alpha(1,2), the K-h alpha(1)-K-h alpha(2) splitting, and the K-h alpha(1)/K-h alpha(2) intensity ratio, derived from the measurements, are also discussed with a particular emphasis on the QED corrections and Breit interaction. A sharp feature in the charge-density excitation spectra of single-crystal MgB$_{2}$, displaying a remarkable cosine-like, periodic energy dispersion with momentum transfer ($q$) along the $c^{*}$-axis, has been observed for the first time by high-resolution non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). Time-dependent density-functional theory calculations show that the physics underlying the NIXS data is strong coupling between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, mediated by large crystal local-field effects. As a result, the small-$q$ collective mode residing in the single-particle excitation gap of the B $\pi$ bands reappears periodically in higher Brillouin zones. The magnetic properties and magnetization dynamics of polycrystalline ultra-thin Co layers were investigated using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique at room temperature. A variable thickness (1 nm $\leq t \leq$ 10 nm) Co layer is sandwiched between 10 nm thick Cu layers (10 nm Cu| t Co|10 nm Cu), while materials in contact with the Cu outer interfaces are varied to determine their influence on the magnetization damping. The resonance field and the linewidth were studied for in-plane magnetic fields in field swept experiments at a fixed frequency, from 4 to 25 GHz. The Co layers have a lower magnetization density than the bulk, and an interface contribution to the magnetic anisotropy normal to the film plane. The Gilbert damping, as determined from the frequency dependence of the linewidth, increases with decreasing Co layer thickness for films with outer Pt layers. This enhancement is not observed in structures without Pt layers. The result can be understood in terms of a non-local contribution to the damping due to spin pumping from Co through the Cu layer and spin relaxation in Pt layers. Pt layers just 1.5 nm thick are found to be sufficient to enhance the damping and thus act as efficient "spin-sinks". In structures with Pt outer layers, this non-local contribution to the damping becomes predominant when the Co layer is thinner than 4 nm.

We report direct evidence of charge/orbital ordering of low energy electronic states of $Cu$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ ortho-II phase in both the $CuO_3$ chain and the CuO$_2$ plane. Huge enhancement of the $({1/2},0,0)$ superstructure Bragg peak is observed when photon energy is tuned to the $Cu L_{2,3}$ absorption edge with large polarization dependence. The ordering in the $CuO_2$ plane discovered here sheds new light on how the one dimensional $Cu-O$ chains affect the $CuO_2$ plane, and why many normal and superconducting state properties of this system exhibit strong anisotropy., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The local structure about the Mn site in the half doped system La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 was measured in magnetic fields up 10 T to probe the melting of the charge ordered state. Examination of the Mn-O and Mn-Mn correlations reveal three distinct regions in the structure-field diagram. A broad region with weak field dependence (mainly antiferromatnetic phase below 7.5 T), a narrow-mixed phase region near ~ 8.5 T followed by a ferromagnetic phase region with strong field-structure coupling. At high field the Mn-O radial distribution becomes Gaussian and the Mn-Mn correlations are enhanced - consistent with the dominance of a ferromagnetic phase. The exponential change in resistivity in the first region (observed in transport measurements) is dominated by the reordering of the moments on the Mn sites from CE type antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order with only a weak change in the local distortions of the MnO6 octahedra.

We present the results of a systematic x-ray scattering study of the charge and orbital ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with $x$=0.25, 0.4 and 0.5. The temperature dependence of the scattering at the charge and orbital wavevectors, and of the lattice constants, was characterized throughout the ordered phase of each sample. It was found that the charge and orbital order wavevectors are commensurate with the lattice, in striking contrast to the results of earlier electron diffraction studies of samples with $x$=0.5. High momentum-transfer resolution studies of the x=0.4 and 0.5 samples further revealed that while long-range charge order is present, long-range orbital order is never established. Above the charge/orbital ordering temperature T$_o$, the charge order fluctuations are more highly correlated than the orbital fluctuations. This suggests that charge order drives orbital order in these samples. In addition, a longitudinal modulation of the lattice with the same periodicity as the charge and orbital ordering was discovered in the x=0.4 and 0.5 samples. For x=0.25, only long-range orbital order was observed with no indication of charge ordering, nor of an additional lattice modulation. We also report the results of a preliminary investigation of the loss of charge and orbital ordering in the x=0.4 sample by application of a magnetic field. Finally, the polarization and azimuthal dependence of the charge and orbital ordering in these compounds is characterized both in the resonant and nonresonant limits, and compared with the predictions of current theories. Mn K ß x-ray emission spectra provide a direct method to probe the effective spin state and charge density on the Mn atom and is used in an experimental study of a class of Mn oxides. Specifically, the Mn K ß line positions and detailed spectral shapes depend on the oxidation and the spin state of the Mn sites as well as the degree of d covalency/itinerancy. Theoretical calculations including atomic charge and multiplet effects, as well as crystal-field splittings and covalency effects, are used as a guide to the experimental results. Direct comparison of the ionic system MnF2 and the covalent system MnO reveals significant changes due to the degree of covalency of Mn within atomic-type Mn K ß simulations. Moreover, comparisons of measurement with calculations support the assumed high spin state of Mn in all of the systems studied. The detailed shape and energy shift of the spectra for the perovskite compounds, LaMnO3 and CaMnO3, are, respectively, found to be very similar to the covalent Mn^(3+)-Mn2O3 and Mn^(4+)-MnO2 compounds thereby supporting the identical Mn-state assignments. Comparison to the theoretical modeling emphasizes the strong covalency in these materials. Detailed Mn K b x-ray emission results on the La1_xCaxMnO3 system can be well fit by linear superpositions of the end member spectra, consistent with a mixed-valent character for the intermediate compositions. We report experimental and theoretical results on the Fe K edge x-ray absorption spectrum and 1s2p resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra in a-Fe2O3 . The results are interpreted using an FeO6^9- cluster model with intra-atomic multiplet coupling and interatomic covalency hybridization. The 1s2p RIXS is treated as a coherent second-order optical process. It is shown that the double-peak structure in the pre-edge region of Fe K absorption spectrum is due to the cubic crystal-field splitting, and that the intensity of the eg (t2g) component in the 1s2p resonant inelastic spectrum is enhanced by tuning the incident photon energy to the eg (t2g) component in the absorption spectrum.
