1. A novel small-scale self-focusing suppression method for ultrahigh peak power lasers

Abstract

We proposed a novel method, using an asymmetric four grating compressor (AFGC) to improve the spatial uniformity of laser beams, to suppress the small-scale self-focusing (SSSF) during the post-compression of ultrahigh peak power lasers. The spatial uniformity is an important factor in performing post-compression, due to the spatial intensity nonuniformity will be enhanced while going through a nonlinear process. And what's more, the strong intensity spikes induced during nonlinear process can seriously damage the subsequent optical components. Moreover, the three-dimensional numerical simulations of the post-compression are implemented based on a petawatt (PW) class laser with a standard compressor and an AFGC. The results show that the post-compression with AFGC can shorten the laser pulses from 30fs to sub-10fs and meanwhile efficiently suppress SSSF. This work provides a promising scheme for the post-compression scaling to PW and even 10PW lasers.

Shaping of the laser pulses that are employed to release electrons from the cathode of a photo injector, was shown in theory to allow improved beam emittance starting from the electron emission process. At the photo injector test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ) a laser system capable of controlling the temporal and spatial profile of laser pulses is being set up to demonstrate the predicted emittance reduction experimentally. The presentation will show its current capabilities to provide temporally and spatially shaped laser pulses from a pulse shaper operating at infrared (IR) wavelengths. Abstract

The optimization of photoinjectors is crucial for the successful operation of linac-based free electron lasers, and beam dynamics simulations have shown that ellipsoidal photocathode laser pulses result in significantly lower electron beam emittance than that of conventional cylindrical pulses. Therefore, in collaboration with the Institute of Applied Physics (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) and the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia), a laser system capable of generating quasi-ellipsoidal laser pulses has been developed and installed at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ). The pulse shaping has been realized using the spatial light modulator technique, characterized by cross-correlation and spectrographic measurements, and is demonstrated with electron beam measurements. In this contribution the overall setup, operating principles, and results of first regular electron beam measurements will be presented together with corresponding beam dynamics simulations. Abstract

International audience; The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ('European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications') aims at producing a design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. EuPRAXIA started in November 2015 and will deliver the design report in October 2019. EuPRAXIA aims to be included on the ESFRI roadmap in 2020.

Abstract

High brightness electron sources for free electron lasers like FLASH and the European XFEL are developed, optimized and characterized at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ). Last year the facility was significantly upgraded with a new prototype photocathode laser capable of producing homogeneous ellipsoidal pulses. Previous simulations have shown that the corresponding pulses produce high brightness electron bunches with minimized emittance. Furthermore, a new normal conducting RF gun cavity was installed with a modified two-window waveguide RF feed layout for stability and reliability tests, as required for the European XFEL. Other relevant additions to the facility include beamline modifications for improved electron beam transport through the PITZ accelerator, refinement of both the cooling and RF systems for improved parameter stability, and preparations for the installation of a plasma cell. Abstract

3-D ellipsoidal photo cathode laser pulses are considered as the next step in optimization of photo injectors required for a successful operation of linac based free electron lasers. Significant improvements in electron beam emittance obtained from the beam dynamics simulations using such laser pulses compared to the conventional cylindrical pulses motivated the experimental studies in order to develop a laser system for quasi 3-D ellipsoidal pulses. The Institute of Applied Physics (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) in collaboration with the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia) and the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ) is developing such a photo cathode laser system. Experimental tests of the laser system with photoelectron beam production are planned at PITZ. The laser pulse shaping is realized using the spatial light modulator technique. The laser system is capable of pulse train generation. First cross-correlation measurements were done demonstrating in principle the ability to generate and measure quasi ellipsoidal laser pulses. Abstract

Using two 20 mm in diameter, 1.4 mm thick, 5 at% doping Yb:YAG ceramic active elements (AEs) we reached 233 mJ at 143 Hz in the output with 70 ns, 30 mJ input pulses. According to our 3D calculations we extracted about half of the stored energy. To our knowledge, this output result is the best among all high repetition rate cryogenic pulse Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk laser systems.

Abstract

Aim of Super-conducting Test Facility (STF) at KEK is demonstrating technologies for International Linear Collider. In STF, one full RF unit will be developed and beam acceleration test will be made. In super-conducting accelerator, precise RF control in phase and power is essential because the input RF power should be balanced to beam accelerating power. To demonstrate the system feasibility, the beam accelerating test is an important step in R phase of STF and ILC. To provide ILC format beam for STF, we develop an electron source based on photo-cathode L-band RF gun. To generate ILC format beam, we developed a laser system based on Yb fiber oscillator in 40.6 MHz. The pulse repetition is decreased by picking pulses in 2.7 MHz, which meets ILC bunch spacing, 364 ns. The pulse is then amplified by YLF laser up to 8 uJ per pulse in 1 mm. The light is converted to 266 nm by SHG and FHG. Finally, 1.5 uJ per pulse is obtained and 3.2 nC bunch charge will be made. Abstract

3-D ellipsoidal photo cathode laser pulses are considered as the next step in optimization of photo injectors required for a successful operation of linac based free electron lasers. Beam dynamics simulations using such laser pulses compared to conventional cylindrical pulses have shown a significant improvement in electron beam emittance. In collaboration with the Institute of Applied Physics (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) and the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia) such a 3-D ellipsoidal laser pulse system has been developed and afterwards installed at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ). The pulse shaping is realized using the spatial light modulator technique. This allows very fine amplitude modulation within a laser pulse. The characterization of the shape of the laser pulses can be done by cross-correlation measurements. Using this method the ability to generate and measure quasi ellipsoidal laser pulses has been demonstrated. Abstract

The JINR develops a project of superconducting linear accelerator complex, based on a superconducting linear accelerator, for applications in nanoindustry, mainly for extreme ultraviolet lithography at a wavelength of 13.5 nm using kW-scale Free Electron Laser (FEL) light source. The application of kW-scale FEL source permits realizing EUV lithography with 22 nm, 16 nm resolutions and beyond. JINR-IAP collaboration constructed powerful laser driver applied for photoinjector of FEL linear accelerator which can be used for EUV lithography. To provide FEL kW-scale EUV radiation the photoinjector laser driver should provide a high macropulse repetition rate of 10 Hz, a long macropulse time duration of 0.8 ms and 8000 pulses per macropulse. The laser driver operates at wavelength of 260-266 nm on forth harmonic in the mode locking on base of Nd ions or Yb ions The laser driver micropulse energy of 1.6 uJ should provide formation of electron beam in FEL photoinjector with the bunch charge about 1 nC., Proceedings of the 5th Int.
