We study canonical quantization of Jackiw-Teibelboim (JT) gravity coupled to a massless scalar field. We provide concrete expressions of matter SL(2,{\,\bf R}) charges and the boundary matter operators in terms of the creation and annihilation operators in the scalar field. The matter charges are represented in the form of an oscillator (Jordon-Schwinger) realization of the SL(2,{\,\bf R}) algebra. We also show how the gauge constraints are implemented classically, by matching explicitly classical solutions of Schwarzian dynamics with bulk solutions. We introduce $n$-point transition functions defined by insertions of boundary matter operators along the two-sided Lorentzian evolution, which may fully spell out the quantum dynamics in the presence of matter. For the Euclidean case, we proceed with a two-sided picture of the disk geometry and consider the two-sided $2$-point correlation function where initial and final states are arranged by inserting matter operators in a specific way. For some simple initial states, we evaluate the correlation function perturbatively. We study Python's lunch geometries in the two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim model coupled to a massless scalar field in the semiclassical limit. We show that all extrema including the minimal quantum extremal surface, bulges and appetizers lie inside the horizon. We obtain fully back-reacted general bulk solutions with a massless scalar field, which can be understood as deformations of black holes. The temperatures of the left/right black holes become in general different from each other. Moreover, in the presence of both state and source deformations at the same time, the asymptotic black hole spacetime is further excited from that of the vacuum solution. We provide information-theoretic interpretation of deformed geometries including Python's lunches, minimal quantum extremal surface and appetizers according to the entanglement wedge reconstruction hypothesis. By considering the restricted circuit complexity associated with Python's lunch geometries and the operator complexity of the Petz map reconstructing a code space operation, we show that the observational probability of Python's lunch degrees of freedom from the boundary is exponentially suppressed. We consider Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with a massless matter field and turn on bulk excitations leading to a nontrivial vev of the corresponding dual boundary operator. To leading order, we realize the corresponding deformation of thermofield double state by explicitly identifying their Hilbert space. The deformed state can be prepared with an operator insertion at the mid-point of the Euclidean time evolution in the context of Hartle-Hawking construction. We show that the inserted operators form an SL(2,{\bf R}) representation. We construct a specific orthonormal basis that is directly related to the operator basis of the vev deformations. If we include the higher order corrections, the bulk geometry is no longer left-right symmetric. We argue that, classically, the mode coefficients in the bulk deformation cannot be fully recovered from the data collected along the boundary cutoff trajectories. Then the bulk seems to contain more information than the cutoff boundary, and this might be responsible for nontrivial behind-horizon degrees of freedom., Comment: 1+20 pages, 2 figure, v2: minor changes, ref.s added

An optical device comprising a resonator waveguide and a filter waveguide optically coupled with the resonator waveguide at a coupling region is disclosed. The resonator waveguide is configured to support at least a first polarization mode and a second polarization mode, the second polarization mode being an operational mode of the resonator waveguide. The resonator waveguide has a first effective index associated with the first polarization mode and a second effective index associated with the second polarization mode. The first polarization mode is in a different polarization than the second polarization mode. The filter waveguide has, in the coupling region, a filter first effective index associated with the first polarization mode, wherein the filter first effective index at least approximately matches with the first effective index of the resonator waveguide such that the first polarization mode is filtered out of the resonator waveguide.

Integrated photonics platform allows miniaturization and dense on-chip integration of diverse optics-based applications ranging from optical communication to machine vision. With significant development in integrated photonics fabrication technology in recent years, low-propagation-loss optical waveguides with sub-wavelength cross-section dimensions are readily available. As nonlinear optical interaction efficiency dramatically scales up with optical wave intensity (power per unit area), the integrated photonics serves as a highly efficient platform for nonlinear optics. Integrated nonlinear photonics – the combination of integrated photonics and nonlinear optics – has enabled various on-chip applications such as all-optical signal processing and generation of frequency combs with efficiency unprecedented in traditional nonlinear optics platforms (bulk nonlinear crystals and optical fibers). In this thesis, we develop an integrated nonlinear photonics system using Aluminum Gallium Arsenide (AlGaAs) on insulator material platform – taking full advantage of the tight waveguide confinement and the high intrinsic nonlinearity of the AlGaAs. A rectangular waveguide is presented with a modal dispersion engineering method, followed by a description of four-wave mixing. Microresonator structure is introduced for further increasing the light intensity utilizing the resonant field enhancement. Several key developments such as thermal tuning and suppression of avoided resonance crossing of the microresonator device are presented. We demonstrate a resonance-enhanced four-wave mixing and Kerr frequency comb generation. A novel near-exceptional-point coupled microresonator system is introduced for longitudinal-mode-selective broadening of resonance enhancement bandwidth.We demonstrate a high-data-rate (up to 38 Gbps) wavelength conversion at a pump power of 1 mW using the coupled microresonator device. Hybrid integration of the AlGaAs and silicon nitride material platform is presented, addressing the need for efficient light transfer between novel nonlinear photonic devices and integrated linear photonic networks. AlGaAsOI fabrication technologies employed for the presented devices are covered. In summary, integrated nonlinear photonics using AlGaAs on insulator material platform is comprehensively investigated from the perspective of theory, design, and fabrication.

Recently, ${\cal N} =3$ mass-deformed ABJM model with arbitrary mass-function depending on a spatial coordinate was constructed. In addition to the ${\cal N} = 3$ case, we construct lower supersymmetric ${\cal N} =1$ and ${\cal N} =2$ inhomogeneously mass-deformed ABJM (ImABJM) models, which require three and two arbitrary mass-functions, respectively. We also construct general vacuum solutions of the ${\cal N} = 3$ ImABJM model for any periodic mass-function. A recommender system aims to recommend items that a user is interested in among many items. The need for the recommender system has been expanded by the information explosion. Various approaches have been suggested for providing meaningful recommendations to users. One of the proposed approaches is to consider a recommender system as a Markov decision process (MDP) problem and try to solve it using reinforcement learning (RL). However, existing RL-based methods have an obvious drawback. To solve an MDP in a recommender system, they encountered a problem with the large number of discrete actions that bring RL to a larger class of problems. In this paper, we propose a novel RL-based recommender system. We formulate a recommender system as a gridworld game by using a biclustering technique that can reduce the state and action space significantly. Using biclustering not only reduces space but also improves the recommendation quality effectively handling the cold-start problem. In addition, our approach can provide users with some explanation why the system recommends certain items. Music highlights are valuable contents for music services. Most methods focused on low-level signal features. We propose a method for extracting highlights using high-level features from convolutional recurrent attention networks (CRAN). CRAN utilizes convolution and recurrent layers for sequential learning with an attention mechanism. The attention allows CRAN to capture significant snippets for distinguishing between genres, thus being used as a high-level feature. CRAN was evaluated on over 32,000 popular tracks in Korea for two months. Experimental results show our method outperforms three baseline methods through quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Also, we analyze the effects of attention and sequence information on performance.

Recommender systems aim to find an accurate and efficient mapping from historic data of user-preferred items to a new item that is to be liked by a user. Towards this goal, energy-based sequence generative adversarial nets (EB-SeqGANs) are adopted for recommendation by learning a generative model for the time series of user-preferred items. By recasting the energy function as the feature function, the proposed EB-SeqGANs is interpreted as an instance of maximum-entropy imitation learning.

Photonic time-stretch is a novel technology that enables capturing of fast, rare and non-repetitive events. Therefore, it operates in real-time with ability to record over long period of time while having fine temporal resolution. The powerful property of photonic time-stretch has already been employed in various fields of application such as analog-to-digital conversion, spectroscopy, laser scanner and microscopy. Further expanding the scope, we fully exploit the time-stretch technology to demonstrate a high throughput web inspection system. Web inspection, namely surface inspection is a nondestructive evaluation method which is crucial for semiconductor wafer and thin film production. We successfully report a dark-field web inspection system with line scan speed of 90.9 MHz which is up to 1000 times faster than conventional inspection instruments. The manufacturing of high quality semiconductor wafer and thin film may directly benefit from this technology as it can easily locate defects with area of less than 10 µm × 10 µm where it allows maximum web flow speed of 1.8 km/s. The thesis provides an overview of our web inspection technique, followed by description of the photonic time-stretch technique which is the keystone in our system. A detailed explanation of each component is covered to provide quantitative understanding of the system. Finally, imaging results from a hard-disk sample and flexible films are presented along with performance analysis of the system. This project was the first application of time-stretch to industrial inspection, and was conducted under financial support and with close involvement by Hitachi, Ltd.

We study Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory without and with mass deformation. It is shown that maximally supersymmetry preserving, D-term, and F-term mass deformations of single mass parameter are equivalent. We obtain vortex-type half-BPS equations and the corresponding energy bound. For the undeformed ABJM theory, the resulting half-BPS equation is the same as that in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and no finite energy regular BPS solution is found. For the mass-deformed ABJM theory, the half-BPS equations for U(2)xU(2) case reduce to the vortex equation in Maxwell-Higgs theory, which supports static regular multi-vortex solutions. Cosmological implication of rolling tachyons is reported in the context of effective field theory. With a brief review of rolling tachyons in both flat and curved spacetimes, we study the string cosmological model with both tachyon and dilaton. In the string frame, flat space solutions of both initial-stage and late-time are obtained in closed form. In the Einstein frame, every expanding solution is decelerating. When a Born-Infeld U(1) gauge field is coupled, enhancement of e-folding of scale factor is also discussed by numerical analysis., LaTex, 11 pages, 2 figures

We find one explicit L^2 harmonic form for every Calabi manifold. Calabi manifolds are known to arise in low energy dynamics of solitons in Yang-Mills theories, and the L^2 harmonic form corresponds to the supersymmetric ground state. As the normalizable ground state of a single U(N) instanton, it is related to the bound state of a single D0 to multiple coincident D4's in the non-commutative setting, or equivalently a unit Kaluza-Klein mode in DLCQ of fivebrane worldvolume theory. As the ground state of nonabelian massless monopoles realized around a monopole-``anti''-monopole pair, it shows how the long range force between the pair is screened in a manner reminiscent of large N behavior of quark-anti-quark potential found in AdS/CFT correspondence., Comment: LaTeX, 23 pages

This is an elementary introduction to Wilson renormalization group and continuum effective field theories. We first review the idea of Wilsonian effective theory and derive the flow equation in a form that allows multiple insertion of operators in Green functions. A general non-relativistic field theory on the plane with couplings to an arbitrary number of abelian Chern-Simons gauge fields is considered. Elementary excitations of the system are shown to exhibit fractional and mutual statistics. We identify the self-dual systems for which certain classical and quantal aspects of the theory can be studied in a much simplified mathematical setting. Then, specializing to the general self-dual system with two Chern-Simons gauge fields (and non-vanishing mutual statistics parameter), we present a systematic analysis for the static vortexlike classical solutions, with or without uniform background magnetic field.
