We revisit the conditions present in supermassive discs (SMDs) formed by the merger of gas-rich, metal-enriched galaxies at red-shift $z\sim 10$. We find that SMDs naturally form hydrostatic cores which go through a rapidly accreting supermassive star phase, before directly collapsing into massive black holes via the general relativistic instability. The growth and collapse of the cores occurs within $\sim 5\times 10^5$ yr from the formation of the SMD, producing bright electromagnetic, neutrino and gravitational wave transients with a typical duration of a few minutes and, respectively, a typical flux and a typical strain amplitude at Earth of $\sim 10^{-8}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $\sim4\times 10^{-21}$. We provide a simple fitting formula for the the resulting black hole masses, which range from a few $10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ to $10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ depending on the initial SMD configuration. Crucially, our analysis does not require any specific assumption on the thermal properties of the gas, nor on the angular momentum loss mechanisms within the SMD. Led by these findings, we argue that the merger-driven scenario provides a robust pathway for the rapid formation of supermassive black holes at $z > 6$. It provides an explanation for the origin of the brightest and oldest quasars without the need of a sustained growth phase from a much smaller seed. Magnetic fields are of critical importance for our understanding of the origin and long-term evolution of the Milky Way. This is due to their decisive role in the dynamical evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) and their influence on the star-formation process. Faraday rotation measures (RM) along many different sightlines across the Galaxy are a primary means to infer the magnetic field topology and strength from observations. However, the interpretation of the data has been hampered by the failure of previous attempts to explain the observations in theoretical models and to synthesize a realistic multi-scale all-sky RM map. We here utilize a cosmological magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of the formation of the Milky Way, augment it with a novel star cluster population synthesis model for a more realistic structure of the local interstellar medium, and perform detailed polarized radiative transfer calculations on the resulting model. This yields a faithful first principles prediction of the Faraday sky as observed on Earth. The results reproduce the observations of the Galaxy not only on global scales, but also on local scales of individual star-forming clouds. They also imply that the Local Bubble containing our Sun dominates the RM signal over large regions of the sky. Modern cosmological MHD simulations of the Milky Way's formation, combined with a simple and plausible model for the fraction of free electrons in the ISM, explain the RM observations remarkably well, thus indicating the emergence of a firm theoretical understanding of the genesis of magnetic fields in our Universe across cosmic time., 14 pages, 3 figures

Measurements of the star formation activity on cloud scales are fundamental to uncovering the physics of the molecular cloud, star formation, and stellar feedback cycle in galaxies. Infrared (IR) emission from small dust grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely used to trace the obscured component of star formation. However, the relation between these emission features and dust attenuation is complicated by the combined effects of dust heating from old stellar populations and an uncertain dust geometry with respect to heating sources. We use images obtained with NIRCam and MIRI as part of the PHANGS--JWST survey to calibrate dust emission at 21$\rm \mu m$, and the emission in the PAH-tracing bands at 3.3, 7.7, 10, and 11.3$\rm \mu m$ as tracers of obscured star formation. We analyse $\sim$ 16000 optically selected HII regions across 16 nearby star-forming galaxies, and benchmark their IR emission against dust attenuation measured from the Balmer decrement. We model the extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ flux as the sum of the observed H$\alpha$ emission and a term proportional to the IR emission, with $a_{IR}$ as the proportionality coefficient. A constant $a_{IR}$ leads to extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ estimates which agree with those obtained with the Balmer decrement with a scatter of $\sim$ 0.1 dex for all bands considered. Among these bands, 21$\rm \mu m$ emission is demonstrated to be the best tracer of dust attenuation. The PAH-tracing bands underestimate the correction for bright HII regions, since in these environments the ratio of PAH-tracing bands to 21$\rm \mu m$ decreases, signalling destruction of the PAH molecules. We identify giant molecular clouds (GMCs) associated with HII regions for a sample of 19 nearby galaxies using catalogs of GMCs and H regions released by the PHANGS-ALMA and PHANGS-MUSE surveys, using the overlap of the CO and H{\alpha} emission as the key criterion for physical association. We compare the distributions of GMC and HII region properties for paired and non-paired objects. We investigate correlations between GMC and HII region properties among galaxies and across different galactic environments to determine whether GMCs that are associated with HII regions have significantly distinct physical properties to the parent GMC population. We identify trends between the H{\alpha} luminosity of an HII region and the CO peak brightness and the molecular mass of GMCs that we tentatively attribute to a direct physical connection between the matched objects, and which arise independently of underlying environmental variations of GMC and HII region properties within galaxies. The study of the full sample nevertheless hides a large variability galaxy by galaxy. Our results suggests that at the ~100 pc scales accessed by the PHANGS-ALMA and PHANGS-MUSE data, pre-supernova feedback mechanisms in HII regions have a subtle but measurable impact on the properties of the surrounding molecular gas, as inferred from CO observations.

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is a kinematically unusual environment relative to the Galactic disc, with high velocity dispersions and a steep size-linewidth relation of the molecular clouds. In addition, the CMZ region has a significantly lower star formation rate (SFR) than expected by its large amount of dense gas. An important factor in explaining the low SFR is the turbulent state of the star-forming gas, which seems to be dominated by rotational modes. However, the turbulence driving mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we investigate how the Galactic gravitational potential affects the turbulence in CMZ clouds. We demonstrate that several kinematic properties of the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016 (`the Brick') arise naturally in a cloud-scale hydrodynamics simulation that takes into account the Galactic gravitational potential. These properties include the line-of-sight velocity distribution, the steepened size-linewidth relation, and the predominantly solenoidal nature of the turbulence. Within the simulation, these properties result from the Galactic shear in combination with the cloud's gravitational collapse. This is a strong indication that the Galactic gravitational potential plays a crucial role in shaping the CMZ gas kinematics, and is a major contributor to suppressing the SFR by inducing predominantly solenoidal turbulent modes., MNRAS Letters submitted (December 21, 2022); 6 pages, 4 figures

We study the behaviour of dust in galaxies at cosmic dawn, z=6-8, by coupling the FirstLight simulations with the radiative transfer code POLARIS. The starburst nature of these galaxies and their complex distribution of dust lead to a large diversity of attenuation curves. These follow the Calzetti model only for relatively massive galaxies, Mstars=10^9 Msun. Galaxies with lower masses have steeper curves, consistent with the model for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The ultraviolet and optical slopes of the attenuation curves are closer to the modified Calzetti model, with a slight preference for the power-law model for galaxies with the highest values of attenuation. We have also examined the relation between the slope in the far-ultraviolet, beta_UV , and the infrared excess, IRX. At z=6, it follows the Calzetti model with a shift to slightly lower beta_UV values due to lower metallicities at lower attenuation. Population III (Pop. III) binary stars likely produced the first stellar-born binary black hole (BBH) mergers in the Universe. Here, we quantify the main sources of uncertainty for the merger rate density evolution and mass spectrum of Pop. III BBHs by considering four different formation histories and 11 models of the initial orbital properties of Pop. III binary stars. The uncertainty on the orbital properties affects the BBH merger rate density by up to two orders of magnitude, models with shorter orbital periods leading to higher BBH merger rates. The uncertainty on the star formation history has a substantial impact on both the shape and the normalisation of the BBH merger rate density: the peak of the merger rate density shifts from $z\sim{8}$ up to $z\sim{16}$ depending on the assumed star formation rate, while the maximum BBH merger rate density for our fiducial binary population model spans from $\sim{2}$ to $\sim{30}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$. The typical BBH masses are not affected by the star formation rate model and only mildly influenced by the binary population parameters. The primary black holes born from Pop. III stars tend to be rather massive ($30-40$ M$_\odot$) with respect to those born from metal-rich stars ($8-10$ M$_\odot$). We estimate that the Einstein Telescope will detect $10-10^4$ Pop. Connecting the gas in HII regions to the underlying source of the ionizing radiation can help us constrain the physical processes of stellar feedback and how HII regions evolve over time. With PHANGS$\unicode{x2013}$MUSE we detect nearly 24,000 HII regions across 19 galaxies and measure the physical properties of the ionized gas (e.g. metallicity, ionization parameter, density). We use catalogues of multi-scale stellar associations from PHANGS$\unicode{x2013}$HST to obtain constraints on the age of the ionizing sources. We construct a matched catalogue of 4,177 HII regions that are clearly linked to a single ionizing association. A weak anti-correlation is observed between the association ages and the H$\alpha$ equivalent width EW(H$\alpha$), the H$\alpha$/FUV flux ratio and the ionization parameter, log q. As all three are expected to decrease as the stellar population ages, this could indicate that we observe an evolutionary sequence. This interpretation is further supported by correlations between all three properties. Interpreting these as evolutionary tracers, we find younger nebulae to be more attenuated by dust and closer to giant molecular clouds, in line with recent models of feedback-regulated star formation. We also observe strong correlations with the local metallicity variations and all three proposed age tracers, suggestive of star formation preferentially occurring in locations of locally enhanced metallicity. Overall, EW(H$\alpha$) and log q show the most consistent trends and appear to be most reliable tracers for the age of an HII region., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. The Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) is an important part of the galactic gas cycle and a precondition for the formation of molecular and star forming gas, yet its distribution is still not fully understood. In this work we present extremely high resolution simulations of spiral galaxies with time-dependent chemistry such that we can track the formation of the CNM, its distribution within the galaxy, and its correlation with star formation. We find no strong radial dependence between the CNM fraction and total HI due to the decreasing interstellar radiation field counterbalancing the decreasing gas column density at larger galactic radii.However, the CNM fraction does increase in spiral arms where the CNM distribution is clumpy, rather than continuous, overlapping more closely with H2. The CNM doesn't extend out radially as far as HI, and the vertical scale height is smaller in the outer galaxy compared to HI with no flaring. The CNM column density scales with total midplane pressure and disappears from the gas phase below values of PT/kB =1000 K/cm3. We find that the star formation rate density follows a similar scaling law with CNM column density to the total gas Kennicutt-Schmidt law. In the outer galaxy we produce realistic vertical velocity dispersions in the HI purely from galactic dynamics but our models do not predict CNM at the extremely large radii observed in HI absorption studies of the Milky Way. Context: The sizes of dust in the interstellar medium follows a distribution where most of the dust mass is in smaller grains. However, the re-distribution from larger grains towards smaller sizes especially by means of rotational disruption is poorly understood. Aims: We aim to study the dynamics of porous grain aggregates under accelerated ration. Especially, we determine the deformation of the grains and the maximal angular velocity up to the rotational disruption event by caused by centrifugal forces. Methods: We pre-calculate aggregates my means of ballistic aggregation analogous to the interstellar dust as input for subsequent numerical simulations. In detail, we perform three-dimensional N-body simulations mimicking the radiative torque spin-up process up to the point where the grain aggregates become rotationally disrupted. Results: Our simulations results are in agreement with theoretical models predicting a characteristic angular velocity $\omega_{\mathrm{disr}}$ of the order of ${ 10^8 - 10^9\ \mathrm{rad\ s^{-1}} }$, where grains become rotationally disrupted. In contrast to theoretical predictions, we show that for large porous aggregates ($< 300\ \mathrm{nm}$) $\omega_{\mathrm{disr}}$ reaches a lower asymptotic value. Hence, such grains can withstand an accelerated ration more efficiently up to a factor of 10 because the displacement of mass by centrifugal forces and the subsequent mechanical deformation supports the buildup of new connections within the aggregate. Furthermore, we report that the rapid rotation of grains deforms an ensemble with initially 50:50 prolate and oblate shapes, respectively, preferentially into oblate shapes. Finally, we present a best fit formula to predict the average rotational disruption of an ensemble of porous dust aggregates dependent on internal grain structure, total number of monomers, and applied material properties., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

Population III stars, born from the primordial gas in the Universe, lose a negligible fraction of their mass via stellar winds and possibly follow a top-heavy mass function. Hence, they have often been regarded as the ideal progenitors of massive black holes (BHs), even above the pair instability mass gap. Here, we evolve a large set of Population III binary stars (metallicity $Z=10^{-11}$) with our population-synthesis code SEVN, and compare them with Population II binary stars ($Z=10^{-4}$). In our models, the lower edge of the pair-instability mass gap corresponds to a BH mass of $\approx{86}$ ($\approx{91}$) M$_\odot$ for single Population III (II) stars. Overall, we find only mild differences between the properties of binary BHs (BBHs) born from Population III and II stars, especially if we adopt the same initial mass function and initial orbital properties. Most BBH mergers born from Population III and II stars have primary BH mass below the pair-instability gap, and the maximum secondary BH mass is $ < 50$ M$_\odot$. Only up to $\approx{3.3}$% ($\approx{0.09}$%) BBH mergers from Population III (II) progenitors have primary mass above the gap. The first generation of stars, often called Population III (or Pop III), form from metal-free primordial gas at redshifts 30 and below. They dominate the cosmic star formation history until redshifts 15 to 20, at which point the formation of metal-enriched Pop II stars takes over. We review current theoretical models for the formation, properties and impact of Pop III stars, and discuss existing and future observational constraints. Key takeaways from this review include the following: (1) Primordial gas is highly susceptible to fragmentation and Pop III stars form as members of small clusters with a logarithmically flat mass function. (2) Feedback from massive Pop III stars plays a central role in regulating subsequent star formation, but major uncertainties remain regarding its immediate impact. (3) In extreme conditions, supermassive Pop III stars can form, reaching masses of several 10^5 Msun. Their remnants may be the seeds of the supermassive black holes observed in high-redshift quasars. (4) Direct observations of Pop III stars in the early Universe remain extremely challenging. The CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_\rm{CO}$) is central to measuring the amount and properties of molecular gas. It is known to vary with environmental conditions, and previous studies have revealed lower $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ in the centers of some barred galaxies on kpc scales. To unveil the physical drivers of such variations, we obtained ALMA Band 3, 6, and 7 observations toward the inner 2 kpc of NGC 3627 and NGC 4321 tracing $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O lines on 100 pc scales. Our multi-line modeling and Bayesian likelihood analysis of these datasets reveal variations of molecular gas density, temperature, optical depth, and velocity dispersion, which are among the key drivers of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$. The central 300 pc nuclei in both galaxies show strong enhancement of temperature $T_\rm{k}>100$ K and density $n_\rm{H_2}>10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. Assuming a CO-to-H$_2$ abundance of $3\times10^{-4}$, we derive 4-15 times lower $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ than the Galactic value across our maps, which agrees well with previous kpc-scale measurements. Combining the results with our previous work on NGC 3351, we find a strong correlation of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ with low-J $^{12}$CO optical depths ($\tau_\rm{CO}$), as well as an anti-correlation with $T_\rm{k}$. The $\tau_\rm{CO}$ correlation explains most of the $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ variation in the three galaxy centers, whereas changes in $T_\rm{k}$ influence $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ to second order. Overall, the observed line width and $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO 2-1 line ratio correlate with $\tau_\rm{CO}$ variation in these centers, and thus they are useful observational indicators for $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ variation. Observations of the 21cm line of neutral hydrogen are poised to revolutionize our knowledge of cosmic reionization and the high-redshift population of galaxies. However, harnessing such information requires robust and comprehensive theoretical modeling. We study the non-linear effects of hydrodynamics and astrophysical feedback processes, including stellar and AGN feedback, on the 21cm signal by post-processing three existing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation: Illustris, IllustrisTNG, and Eagle. Overall and despite their different underlying galaxy-formation models, the three simulations return similar predictions for the global 21cm rightness temperature and its power spectrum. At fixed redshift, most differences are attributable to differences in the history of reionization, in turn driven by differences in the build-up of stellar sources of radiation. However, the impact of astrophysics is imprinted in the 21cm power spectrum through several unique signatures. First, we find significant small scale ($k \geq 10\, \rm {Mpc}^{-1}$) differences between Illustris and IllustrisTNG, where higher velocity winds generated by supernova feedback soften density peaks and lead to lower 21cm power in TNG. Second, we find more 21cm power at intermediate scales ($k \approx 0.8\, \rm {Mpc}^{-1}$) in Eagle, due to differences in ionization driven by highly effective stellar feedback, leading to lower star formation, older and redder stellar populations, and thus lower ionizing luminosities. We develop a method to identify and determine the physical properties of stellar associations using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) NUV-U-B-V-I imaging of nearby galaxies from the PHANGS-HST survey. We apply a watershed algorithm to density maps constructed from point source catalogues Gaussian smoothed to multiple physical scales from 8 to 64 pc. We develop our method on two galaxies that span the distance range in the PHANGS-HST sample: NGC 3351 (10 Mpc), NGC 1566 (18 Mpc). We test our algorithm with different parameters such as the choice of detection band for the point source catalogue (NUV or V), source density image filtering methods, and absolute magnitude limits. We characterise the properties of the resulting multi-scale associations, including sizes, number of tracer stars, number of associations, photometry, as well as ages, masses, and reddening from Spectral Energy Distribution fitting. Our method successfully identifies structures that occupy loci in the UBVI colour-colour diagram consistent with previously published catalogues of clusters and associations. The median ages of the associations increases from log(age/yr) = 6.6 to log(age/yr) = 6.9 as the spatial scale increases from 8 pc to 64 pc for both galaxies. We find that the youngest stellar associations, with ages < 3 Myr, indeed closely trace H ii regions in H$\alpha$ imaging, and that older associations are increasingly anti-correlated with the H$\alpha$ emission. Owing to our new method, the PHANGS-HST multi-scale associations provide a far more complete census of recent star formation activity than found with previous cluster and compact association catalogues. JWST/MIRI imaging of the nearby galaxies IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365 and NGC 7496 from PHANGS reveals a richness of gas structures that in each case form a quasi-regular network of interconnected filaments, shells and voids. We examine whether this multi-scale network of structure is consistent with the fragmentation of the gas disk through gravitational instability. We use FilFinder to detect the web of filamentary features in each galaxy and determine their characteristic radial and azimuthal spacings. These spacings are then compared to estimates of the most Toomre-unstable length (a few kpc), the turbulent Jeans length (a few hundred pc) and the disk scale height (tens of pc) reconstructed using PHANGS-ALMA observations of the molecular gas as a dynamical tracer. Our analysis of the four galaxies targeted in this work indicates that Jeans-scale structure is pervasive. Future work will be essential for determining how the structure observed in gas disks impacts not only the rate and location of star formation but also how stellar feedback interacts positively or negatively with the surrounding multi-phase gas reservoir., 15 pages, 4 figures. We present a comparison of theoretical predictions of dust continuum and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission with new JWST observations in three nearby galaxies: NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496. Our analysis focuses on a total of 1063 compact stellar clusters and 2654 stellar associations previously characterized by HST in the three galaxies. We find that the distributions and trends in the observed PAH-focused infrared colors generally agree with theoretical expectations, and that the bulk of the observations is more aligned with models of larger, ionized PAHs. In spite of decades of theoretical efforts, the physical origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is still debated. We aim at understanding the influence of various physical processes such as radiative stellar feedback, magnetic field and non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamics on the IMF. We present a series of numerical simulations of collapsing 1000 M$_\odot$ clumps taking into account radiative feedback and magnetic field with spatial resolution down to 1 AU. Both ideal and non-ideal MHD runs are performed and various radiative feedback efficiencies are considered. We also develop analytical models that we confront to the numerical results. The sum of the luminosities produced by the stars in the calculations is computed and it compares well with the bolometric luminosities reported in observations of massive star forming clumps. The temperatures, velocities and densities are also found to be in good agreement with recent observations. The stellar mass spectrum inferred for the simulations is, generally speaking, not strictly universal and in particular varies with magnetic intensity. It is also influenced by the choice of the radiative feedback efficiency. In all simulations, a sharp drop in the stellar distribution is found at about $M_{min} \simeq$ 0.1 M$_\odot$, which is likely a consequence of the adiabatic behaviour induced by dust opacities at high densities. As a consequence, when the combination of magnetic and thermal support is not too large, the mass distribution presents a peak located at 0.3-0.5 M$_\odot$. When magnetic and thermal support are large, the mass distribution is better described by a plateau, i.e. $d N / d \log M \propto M^{-\Gamma}$, $\Gamma \simeq 0$. We study the evolution of embedded star clusters as possible progenitors to reproduce 30 Doradus, specifically the compact star cluster known as R136 and its surrounding stellar family, which is believed to be part of an earlier star formation event. We employ the high-precision stellar dynamics code NBODY6++GPU to calculate the dynamics of the stars embedded in different evolving molecular clouds modelled by the 1D cloud/clusters evolution code WARPFIELD. We explore clouds with initial masses of $M_\text{cloud}=3.16 \times 10^{5}$ M$_\odot$ that (re)-collapse allowing for the birth of a second generation of stars. We explore different star formation efficiencies in order to find the best set of parameters that can reproduce the observation measurements. Our best-fit models correspond to a first stellar generation with masses between $1.26 \times 10^4$ - $2.85 \times 10^4 $M$_\odot$ and for the second generation we find a $M \approx 6.32\times 10^4$ M$_\odot$. Our models can match the observed stellar ages, cloud shell radius, and the fact that the second generation of stars is more concentrated than the first one. This is found independently of the cluster starting initially with mass segregation or not. By comparing our results with recent observational measurements of the mass segregation and density profile of the central zone we find close agreement, and thus provide supporting evidence for a centrally focused (re)-collapse origin to the multiple ages., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

JWST observations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission provide some of the deepest and highest resolution views of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies. If PAHs are well mixed with the atomic and molecular gas and illuminated by the average diffuse interstellar radiation field, PAH emission may provide an approximately linear, high resolution, high sensitivity tracer of diffuse gas surface density. We present a pilot study that explores using PAH emission in this way based on MIRI observations of IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496 from the PHANGS-JWST Treasury. Using scaling relationships calibrated in Leroy et al. (2022), scaled F1130W provides 10--40 pc resolution and 3$\sigma$ sensitivity of $\Sigma_{\rm gas} \sim 2$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$. We characterize the surface densities of structures seen at $< 7$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ in our targets, where we expect the gas to be HI-dominated. We highlight the existence of filaments, inter-arm emission, and holes in the diffuse ISM at these low surface densities. Below $\sim 10$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ for NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496 the gas distribution shows a ``Swiss cheese''-like topology due to holes and bubbles pervading the relatively smooth distribution of diffuse ISM. Comparing to recent galaxy simulations, we observe similar topology for the low surface density gas, though with notable variations between simulations with different setups and resolution. Such a comparison of high resolution, low surface density gas with simulations is not possible with existing atomic and molecular gas maps, highlighting the unique power of JWST maps of PAH emission., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted as part of a PHANGS-JWST Focus Issue to appear in ApJ

Mapping star-formation rates (SFR) within galaxies is key to unveiling their assembly and evolution. Calibrations exist for computing SFR from a combination of ultraviolet and infrared bands for galaxies as integrated systems, but their applicability to sub-galactic (kpc) scales remains largely untested. The complex physical, kinematic, and chemical properties of galaxy centres make them interesting environments to examine with molecular line emission. We present new $2-4$" (${\sim}75{-}150$ pc at $7.7$ Mpc) observations at 2 and 3 mm covering the central $50$" (${\sim}1.9$ kpc) of the nearby double-barred spiral galaxy NGC 6946 obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We detect spectral lines from ten molecules: CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, CS, HC$_3$N, N$_2$H$^+$, C$_2$H, CH$_3$OH, and H$_2$CO. We complemented these with published 1mm CO observations and 33 GHz continuum observations to explore the star formation rate surface density ${\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}}$ on 150 pc scales. In this paper, we analyse regions associated with the inner bar of NGC 6946 $-$ the nuclear region (NUC), the northern (NBE), and southern inner bar end (SBE) and we focus on short-spacing corrected bulk (CO) and dense gas tracers (HCN, HCO$^+$, and HNC). We find that HCO$^+$ correlates best with ${\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}}$, but the dense gas fraction ($f_{\mathrm{dense}}$) and star formation efficiency of the dense gas (${\mathrm{SFE_{dense}}}$) fits show different behaviours than expected from large-scale disc observations.The SBE has a higher ${\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}}$, $f_{\mathrm{dense}}$, and shocked gas fraction than the NBE. We examine line ratio diagnostics and find a higher CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratio towards NBE than for the NUC. Moreover, comparison with existing extragalactic datasets suggests that using the HCN/HNC ratio to probe kinetic temperatures is not suitable on kiloparsec and sub-kiloparsec scales in extragalactic regions. The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum~II was enriched by a single rare and prolific r-process event. The r-process content of Reticulum~II thus provides a unique opportunity to study metal mixing in a relic first galaxy. Using multi-object high-resolution spectroscopy with VLT/GIRAFFE and Magellan/M2FS, we identify 32 clear spectroscopic member stars and measure abundances of Mg, Ca, Fe, and Ba where possible. We find $72^{+10}_{-12}$% of the stars are r-process-enhanced, with a mean $\left\langle\mbox{[Ba/H]}\right\rangle=-1.68~\pm~0.07$ and unresolved intrinsic dispersion $\sigma_{\rm [Ba/H]} < 0.20$. The homogeneous r-process abundances imply that Ret~II's metals are well-mixed by the time the r-enhanced stars form, which simulations have shown requires at least 100 Myr of metal mixing in between bursts of star formation to homogenize. This is the first direct evidence of bursty star formation in an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy. The homogeneous dilution prefers a prompt and high-yield r-process site, such as collapsar disk winds or prompt neutron star mergers. We also find evidence from [Ba/H] and [Mg/Ca] that the r-enhanced stars in Ret~II formed in the absence of substantial pristine gas accretion, perhaps indicating that ${\approx}70$% of Ret~II stars formed after reionization., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures, 10 tables, accepted to AJ

We use PHANGS-JWST data to identify and classify 1271 compact 21 $μ$m sources in four nearby galaxies using MIRI F2100W data. We identify sources using a dendrogram-based algorithm, and we measure the background-subtracted flux densities for JWST bands from 2 $μ$m to 21 $μ$m. Using the SED in JWST as well as HST bands, plus ALMA and MUSE/VLT observations, we classify the sources by eye. Then we use this classification to define regions in color-color space, and so establish a quantitative framework for classifying sources. We identify 1085 sources as belonging to the ISM of the target galaxies with the remainder being dusty stars or background galaxies. These 21 $μ$m sources are strongly spatially associated with HII regions ($>92\%$ of sources), while 74$\%$ of sources are coincident with a stellar association defined in the HST data. Using SED fitting, we find that the stellar masses of the 21 $μ$m sources span a range of 10$^{2}$ to 10$^{4}~M_\odot$ with mass-weighted ages down to 2 Myr. There is a tight correlation between attenuation-corrected H$α$ and 21 $μ$m luminosity for $L_{ν,\mathrm{F2100W}}>10^{19}~\mathrm{W~Hz}^{-1}$. We study the evolution of embedded star clusters as possible progenitors to reproduce 30 Doradus, specifically the compact star cluster known as R136 and its surrounding stellar family, which is believed to be part of an earlier star formation event. We employ the high-precision stellar dynamics code NBODY6++GPU to calculate the dynamics of the stars embedded in different evolving molecular clouds modelled by the 1D cloud/clusters evolution code WARPFIELD. We explore clouds with initial masses of $M_\text{cloud}=3.16 \times 10^{5}$ M$_\odot$ that (re)-collapse allowing for the birth of a second generation of stars. We explore different star formation efficiencies in order to find the best set of parameters that can reproduce the observation measurements. Our best-fit models correspond to a first stellar generation with masses between $1.26 \times 10^4$ - $2.85 \times 10^4 $M$_\odot$ and for the second generation we find a $M \approx 6.32\times 10^4$ M$_\odot$. Our models can match the observed stellar ages, cloud shell radius, and the fact that the second generation of stars is more concentrated than the first one. This is found independently of the cluster starting initially with mass segregation or not. By comparing our results with recent observational measurements of the mass segregation and density profile of the central zone we find close agreement, and thus provide supporting evidence for a centrally focused (re)-collapse origin to the multiple ages., 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Understanding the spatial distribution of metals within galaxies allows us to study the processes of chemical enrichment and mixing in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we map the two-dimensional distribution of metals using a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) for 19 star-forming galaxies observed with the Very Large Telescope/Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (VLT-MUSE) as part of the PHANGS-MUSE survey. We find that 12 of our 19 galaxies show significant two-dimensional metallicity variation. Those without significant variations typically have fewer metallicity measurements, indicating this is due to the dearth of HII regions in these galaxies, rather than a lack of higher-order variation. After subtracting a linear radial gradient, we see no enrichment in the spiral arms versus the disc. We measure the 50 per cent correlation scale from the two-point correlation function of these radially-subtracted maps, finding it to typically be an order of magnitude smaller than the fitted GPR kernel scale length. We study the dependence of the two-point correlation scale length with a number of global galaxy properties. We find no relationship between the 50 per cent correlation scale and the overall gas turbulence, in tension with existing theoretical models. We also find more actively star forming galaxies, and earlier type galaxies have a larger 50 per cent correlation scale. The size and stellar mass surface density do not appear to correlate with the 50 per cent correlation scale, indicating that perhaps the evolutionary state of the galaxy and its current star formation activity is the strongest indicator of the homogeneity of the metal distribution., 20 pages, 14 Figures, 2 Appendices. The sensitivity and angular resolution of photometric surveys executed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) enable studies of individual star clusters in galaxies out to a few tens of megaparsecs. The fitting of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of star clusters is essential for measuring their physical properties and studying their evolution. We report on the use of the publicly available Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE) SED fitting package to derive ages, stellar masses, and reddenings for star clusters identified in the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS–HST (PHANGS–HST) survey. Using samples of star clusters in the galaxy NGC 3351, we present results of benchmark analyses performed to validate the code and a comparison to SED fitting results from the Legacy Extragalactic Ultraviolet Survey. We consider procedures for the PHANGS–HST SED fitting pipeline, e.g. the choice of single stellar population models, the treatment of nebular emission and dust, and the use of fluxes versus magnitudes for the SED fitting. We report on the properties of clusters in NGC 3351 and find, on average, the clusters residing in the inner star-forming ring of NGC 3351 are young (

In this paper we examine the factors that shape the distribution of molecular gas surface densities on the 150 pc scale across 67 morphologically diverse star-forming galaxies in the PHANGS-ALMA CO (2-1) survey. Dividing each galaxy into radial bins, we measure molecular gas surface density contrasts, defined here as the ratio between a fixed high percentile of the CO distribution and a fixed reference level in each bin. This reference level captures the level of the faint CO floor that extends between bright filamentary features, while the intensity level of the higher percentile probes the structures visually associated with bright, dense ISM features like spiral arms, bars, and filaments. We compare these contrasts to matched percentile-based measurements of the 3.6 $��$m emission measured using Spitzer/IRAC imaging, which trace the underlying stellar mass density. We find that the logarithms of CO contrasts on 150 pc scales are 3-4 times larger than, and positively correlated with, the logarithms of 3.6 $��$m contrasts probing smooth non-axisymmetric stellar bar and spiral structures. The correlation appears steeper than linear, consistent with the compression of gas as it flows supersonically in response to large-scale stellar structures, even in the presence of weak or flocculent spiral arms. Stellar dynamical features appear to play an important role in setting the cloud-scale gas density in our galaxies, with gas self-gravity perhaps playing a weaker role in setting the 150 pc-scale distribution of gas densities., Accepted for publication in ApJ, 16 pages, 7 figures

Understanding the physics of turbulence is crucial for many applications, including weather, industry, and astrophysics. In the interstellar medium (ISM), supersonic turbulence plays a crucial role in controlling the gas density and velocity structure, and ultimately the birth of stars. Here we present a simulation of interstellar turbulence with a grid resolution of 10048^3 cells that allows us to determine the position and width of the sonic scale (l_s) - the transition from supersonic to subsonic turbulence. The simulation simultaneously resolves the supersonic and subsonic cascade, v(l) ~ l^p, where we measure p_sup = 0.49 +/- 0.01 and p_sub = 0.39 +/- 0.02, respectively. We find that l_s agrees with the relation l_s / L = phi_s Mach^(-1/p_sup), where Mach is the three-dimensional Mach number, and L is either the driving scale of turbulence or the diameter of a molecular cloud. If L is the driving scale, we measure phi_s = 0.42 (+0.12) (-0.09), primarily because of the separation between the driving scale and the start of the supersonic cascade. For a supersonic cascade extending beyond the cloud scale, we get phi_s = 0.91 (+0.25) (-0.20). In both cases, phi_s < 1, because we find that the supersonic cascade transitions smoothly to the subsonic cascade over a factor of 3 in scale, instead of a sharp transition. From studying the cosmic microwave background, we know our Universe started out very simple. It was by and large homogeneous and isotropic, with small fluctuations that can be described by linear perturbation theory. In stark contrast, the Universe today is highly structured on a vast range of length and mass scales. In the evolution towards increasing complexity, the formation of the first stars marks a primary transition event. The first generation of stars, the so-called Population III (or Pop. III) build up from truly metal-free primordial gas. They have long been thought to live short, solitary lives, with only one massive star forming per halo. However, in recent years this simple picture has undergone substantial revision, and we now understand that stellar birth in the early Universe is subject to the same complexity as star formation at present days. In this chapter, I review the current state of the field. I begin by introducing the basics concepts of star-formation theory and by discussing the typical environment in which Pop. III stars are thought to form. Then I argue that the accretion disk that builds up in the center of a halo is likely to fragment, resulting in the formation of a cluster of stars with a wide range of masses, and I speculate about how this process may be influenced by stellar feedback, the presence of magnetic fields, the energy input from dark matter annihilation, and the occurrence of large- scale streaming velocities between baryons and dark matter. We develop a dynamical theory for the origin of nuclear rings in barred galaxies. In analogy with the standard theory of accretion discs, our theory is based on shear viscous forces among nested annuli of gas. However, the fact that gas follows non circular orbits in an external barred potential has profound consequences: it creates a region of reverse shear in which it is energetically favourable to form a stable ring which does not spread despite dissipation. Our theory allows us to approximately predict the size of the ring given the underlying gravitational potential. The size of the ring is loosely related to the location of the Inner Lindblad Resonance in the epicyclic approximation, but the predicted location is more accurate and is also valid for strongly barred potentials. By comparing analytical predictions with the results of hydrodynamical simulations, we find that our theory provides a viable mechanism for ring formation if the effective sound speed of the gas is low ($\cs\lesssim1\kms$), but that nuclear spirals/shocks created by pressure destroy the ring when the sound speed is high ($\cs\simeq10\kms$). We conclude that whether this mechanism for ring formation is relevant for real galaxies ultimately depends on the effective equation of state of the ISM. Promising confirmation comes from simulations in which the ISM is modelled using state-of-the-art cooling functions coupled to live chemical networks, but more tests are needed regarding the role of turbulence driven by stellar feedback. If the mechanism is relevant in real galaxies, it could provide a powerful tool to constrain the gravitational potential, in particular the bar pattern speed., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In many tasks, in particular in natural science, the goal is to determine hidden system parameters from a set of measurements. Often, the forward process from parameter- to measurement-space is a well-defined function, whereas the inverse problem is ambiguous: one measurement may map to multiple different sets of parameters. In this setting, the posterior parameter distribution, conditioned on an input measurement, has to be determined. We argue that a particular class of neural networks is well suited for this task -- so-called Invertible Neural Networks (INNs). Although INNs are not new, they have, so far, received little attention in literature. While classical neural networks attempt to solve the ambiguous inverse problem directly, INNs are able to learn it jointly with the well-defined forward process, using additional latent output variables to capture the information otherwise lost. Given a specific measurement and sampled latent variables, the inverse pass of the INN provides a full distribution over parameter space. We verify experimentally, on artificial data and real-world problems from astrophysics and medicine, that INNs are a powerful analysis tool to find multi-modalities in parameter space, to uncover parameter correlations, and to identify unrecoverable parameters.

While the Lyman α (Ly α) emission line serves as an important tool in the study of galaxies at z ≲ 6, finding Ly α emitters (LAE) at significantly higher redshifts has been more challenging, probably because of the increasing neutrality of the intergalactic medium above z ∼ 6. Galaxies with extremely high rest-frame Ly α equivalent widths, EW(Ly α) ≳ 150 Å, at z > 6, are good candidates for Ly α follow-up observations, and can stand out in multiband imaging surveys because of their unusual colours. We have conducted a photometric search for such objects in the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), and report here the identification of three likely gravitationally lensed images of a single LAE candidate at z ∼ 6.3, behind the galaxy cluster Abell 2261 (z = 0.225). In the process, we also measured with Keck/Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration the first spectroscopic redshift of a multiply imaged galaxy behind Abell 2261, at z = 3.337. This allows us to calibrate the lensing model, which, in turn, is used to study the properties of the candidate LAE. Population III galaxy spectral energy distribution model fits to the CLASH broad-band photometry of the possible LAE provide a slightly better fit than Population I/II models. The best-fitting model suggests intrinsic EW(Ly α) ≈160 Å after absorption in the interstellar and intergalactic medium. Future spectroscopic observations will examine this prediction as well as shed more light on the morphology of this object, which indicates that it may be a merger of two smaller galaxies.

Galactic magnetic fields in the local Universe are strong and omnipresent. There is mounting evidence that galaxies were magnetized already in the early Universe. Theoretical scenarios including the turbulent small-scale dynamo predict magnetic energy densities comparable to the one of turbulence. Based on the assumption of this energy equipartition, we determine the galactic synchrotron flux as a function of redshift z. The conditions in the early Universe are different from the present day, in particular the galaxies have more intense star formation. To cover a large range of conditions we consider models based on two different systems: one model galaxy comparable to the Milky Way and one typical high-z starburst galaxy. We include a model of the steady state cosmic ray spectrum and find that synchrotron emission can be detected up to cosmological redshifts with current and future radio telescopes. Turbulent dynamo theory is in agreement with the origin of the observed correlation between the far-infrared (FIR) luminosity L_FIR and the radio luminosity L_radio. Our model reproduces this correlation well at z=0. We extrapolate the FIR-radio correlation to higher redshift and predict a time evolution with a significant deviation from its present-day appearance already at z~2 for a gas density that increases strongly with z. In particular, we predict a decrease of the radio luminosity with redshift which is caused by the increase of cosmic ray energy losses at high z. The result is an increase of the ratio between L_FIR and L_radio. Simultaneously, we predict that the slope of the FIR-radio correlation becomes shallower with redshift. Understanding turbulence is critical for a wide range of terrestrial and astrophysical applications. Here we present first results of the world's highest-resolution simulation of turbulence ever done. The current simulation has a grid resolution of 10048^3 points and was performed on 65536 compute cores on SuperMUC at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ). We present a scaling test of our modified version of the FLASH code, which updates the hydrodynamical equations in less than 3 micro seconds per cell per time step. It has been shown that the behaviour of primordial gas collapsing in a dark matter minihalo can depend on the adopted choice of 3-body H$_2$ formation rate. The uncertainties in this rate span two orders of magnitude in the current literature, and so it remains a source of uncertainty in our knowledge of population III star formation. Here we investigate how the amount of fragmentation in primordial gas depends on the adopted 3-body rate. We present the results of calculations that follow the chemical and thermal evolution of primordial gas as it collapses in two dark matter minihalos. Our results on the effect of 3-body rate on the evolution until the first protostar forms agree well with previous studies. However, our modified version of GADGET-2 SPH also includes sink particles, which allows us to follow the initial evolution of the accretion disc that builds up on the centre of each halo, and capture the fragmentation in gas as well as its dependence on the adopted 3-body H$_2$ formation rate. We find that the fragmentation behaviour of the gas is only marginally effected by the choice of 3-body rate co-efficient, and that halo-to-halo differences are of equal importance in affecting the final mass distribution of stars., 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted to MNRAS

CR7 is the brightest Lyman-$��$ emitter observed at $z>6$, which shows very strong Lyman-$��$ and HeII 1640�� line luminosities, but no metal line emission. Previous studies suggest that CR7 hosts either young primordial stars with a total stellar mass of $\sim 10^7\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ or a black hole of $\gtrsim 10^6\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$. Here, we explore different formation scenarios for CR7 with a semianalytical model, based on the random sampling of dark matter merger trees. We are unable to reproduce the observational constraints with a primordial stellar source, given our model assumptions, due to the short stellar lifetimes and the early metal enrichment. Black holes that are the remnants of the first stars are either not massive enough, or reside in metal-polluted haloes, ruling out this possible explanation of CR7. Our models instead suggest that direct collapse black holes, which form in metal-free haloes exposed to large Lyman-Werner fluxes, are more likely the origin of CR7. However, this result is derived under optimistic assumptions and future observations are necessary to further constrain the nature of CR7., 21 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, MNRAS in press

Interstellar space is filled with a dilute mixture of charged particles, atoms, molecules and dust grains, called the interstellar medium (ISM). Understanding its physical properties and dynamical behavior is of pivotal importance to many areas of astronomy and astrophysics. Galaxy formation and evolution, the formation of stars, cosmic nucleosynthesis, the origin of large complex, prebiotic molecules and the abundance, structure and growth of dust grains which constitute the fundamental building blocks of planets, all these processes are intimately coupled to the physics of the interstellar medium. However, despite its importance, its structure and evolution is still not fully understood. Observations reveal that the interstellar medium is highly turbulent, consists of different chemical phases, and is characterized by complex structure on all resolvable spatial and temporal scales. Our current numerical and theoretical models describe it as a strongly coupled system that is far from equilibrium and where the different components are intricately linked together by complex feedback loops. Describing the interstellar medium is truly a multi-scale and multi-physics problem. In these lecture notes we introduce the microphysics necessary to better understand the interstellar medium. Understanding the formation of the first objects in the universe critically depends on knowing whether the properties of small dark matter structures at high-redshift (z > 15) are different from their more massive lower-redshift counterparts. To clarify this point, we performed a high-resolution N-body simulation of a cosmological volume 1 Mpc/h comoving on a side, reaching the highest mass resolution to date in this regime. We make precision measurements of various physical properties that characterize dark matter haloes (such as the virial ratio, spin parameter, shape, and formation times, etc.) for the high-redshift (z > 15) dark matter mini-haloes we find in our simulation, and compare them to literature results and a moderate-resolution comparison run within a cube of side-length 100 Mpc/h. We find that dark matter haloes at high-redshift have a log-normal distribution of the dimensionless spin parameter centered around �� $\sim$ 0.03, similar to their more massive counterparts. They tend to have a small ratio of the length of the shortest axis to the longest axis (sphericity), and are highly prolate. In fact, haloes of given mass that formed recently are the least spherical, have the highest virial ratios, and have the highest spins. Interestingly, the formation times of our mini-halos depend only very weakly on mass, in contrast to more massive objects. The time evolution of the probability density function (PDF) of the mass density is formulated and solved for systems in free-fall using a simple appoximate function for the collapse of a sphere. We demonstrate that a pressure-free collapse results in a power-law tail on the high-density side of the PDF. The slope quickly asymptotes to the functional form $\mathrm{P}_v(\rho)\propto\rho^{-1.54}$ for the (volume-weighted) PDF and $\mathrm{P}_m(\rho)\propto\rho^{-0.54}$ for the corresponding mass-weighted distribution. From the simple approximation of the PDF we derive analytic descriptions for mass accretion, finding that dynamically quiet systems with narrow density PDFs lead to retarded star formation and low star formation rates. Conversely, strong turbulent motions that broaden the PDF accelerate the collapse causing a bursting mode of star formation. Finally, we compare our theoretical work with observations. The measured star formation rates are consistent with our model during the early phases of the collapse. We explore the amplification of magnetic fields in the high-redshift Universe. For this purpose, we perform high-resolution cosmological simulations following the formation of primordial halos with \sim10^7 M_solar, revealing the presence of turbulent structures and complex morphologies at resolutions of at least 32 cells per Jeans length. Employing a turbulence subgrid-scale model, we quantify the amount of unresolved turbulence and show that the resulting turbulent viscosity has a significant impact on the gas morphology, suppressing the formation of low-mass clumps. We further demonstrate that such turbulence implies the efficient amplification of magnetic fields via the small-scale dynamo. We discuss the properties of the dynamo in the kinematic and non-linear regime, and explore the resulting magnetic field amplification during primordial star formation. We present the first 3D simulations to include the effects of dark matter annihilation feedback during the collapse of primordial mini-halos. We begin our simulations from cosmological initial conditions and account for dark matter annihilation in our treatment of the chemical and thermal evolution of the gas. The dark matter is modelled using an analytical density profile that responds to changes in the peak gas density. We find that the gas can collapse to high densities despite the additional energy input from the dark matter. No objects supported purely by dark matter annihilation heating are formed in our simulations. However, we find that the dark matter annihilation heating has a large effect on the evolution of the gas following the formation of the first protostar. Previous simulations without dark matter annihilation found that protostellar discs around Population III stars rapidly fragmented, forming multiple protostars that underwent mergers or ejections. When dark matter annihilation is included, however, these discs become stable to radii of 1000 AU or more. In the cases where fragmentation does occur, it is a wide binary that is formed., 15 pages. The formation of stars is a key process in the early universe with far reaching consequences for further cosmic evolution. While stars forming from truly primordial gas are thought to be considerably more massive than our Sun, stars in the universe today have typical masses below one solar mass. The physical origin of this transition and the conditions under which it occurs are highly debated. There are two competing models, one based on metal-line cooling as the primary agent and one based on dust cooling. The recent discovery of the extremely metal poor star SDSS J1029151+172927 provides a unique opportunity to distinguish between these two models. Based on simple thermodynamic considerations we argue that SDSS J1029151+172927 was more likely formed as a result of dust continuum cooling rather than cooling by metal lines. We study the influence of initial conditions on the magnetic field amplification during the collapse of a magnetised gas cloud. We focus on the dependence of the growth and saturation level of the dynamo generated field on the turbulent properties of the collapsing cloud. In particular, we explore the effect of varying the initial strength and injection scale of turbulence and the initial uniform rotation of the collapsing magnetised cloud. In order to follow the evolution of the magnetic field in both the kinematic and the nonlinear regime, we choose an initial field strength of $\simeq 1\,\mkG$ with the magnetic to kinetic energy ratio, $E_{\rm m}/E_{\rm k} \sim 10^{-4}$. Both gravitational compression and the small-scale dynamo initially amplify the magnetic field. Further into the evolution, the dynamo-generated magnetic field saturates but the total magnetic field continues to grow because of compression. The saturation of the small-scale dynamo is marked by a change in the slope of $B/\rho^{2/3}$ and by a shift in the peak of the magnetic energy spectrum from small scales to larger scales. For the range of initial Mach numbers explored in this study, the dynamo growth rate increases as the Mach number increases from $v_{\rm rms}/c_{\rm s}\sim 0.2$ to 0.4 and then starts decreasing from $v_{\rm rms}/c_{\rm s}\sim 1.0$. We obtain saturation values of $E_{\rm m}/E_{\rm k} = 0.2 - 0.3$ for these runs. Simulations with different initial injection scales of turbulence also show saturation at similar levels. For runs with different initial rotation of the cloud, the magnetic energy saturates at $E_{\rm m}/E_{\rm k}\sim 0.2 - 0.4$ of the equipartition value. We derive the mass function of condensations (clumps) which were formed through a turbulent cascade over a range of spatial scales $L\le20$ pc during early, predominantly turbulent evolution of a molecular cloud. The approach rests upon the assumption of a statistical clump mass-density relationship $n\propto m^x$ with a scale dependence of the exponent $x$ obtained from equipartition relations between various forms of energy of clumps. The derived clump mass function (ClMF) could be represented by series of 2 or 3 power laws, depending on the chosen equipartition relation, the velocity scaling index and the type of turbulent forcing. The high-mass ClMF exhibits an average slope $\Gamma\simeq-1$, typical for fractal clouds, whereas its intermediate-mass part is shallower or flattened, in agreement with some observational studies., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS; 12 pages, 6 figures

We present a cluster analysis of the bright main-sequence and faint pre--main-sequence stellar populations of a field ~ 90 x 90 pc centered on the HII region NGC 346/N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, from imaging with HST/ACS. We extend our earlier analysis on the stellar cluster population in the region to characterize the structuring behavior of young stars in the region as a whole with the use of stellar density maps interpreted through techniques designed for the study of the ISM structuring. In particular, we demonstrate with Cartwrigth & Whitworth's Q parameter, dendrograms, and the Delta-variance wavelet transform technique that the young stellar populations in the region NGC 346/N66 are hierarchically clustered, in agreement with other regions in the Magellanic Clouds observed with HST.
