Abstract

The Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of the global average. This warming is influenced by clouds, which modulate the solar and terrestrial radiative fluxes and, thus, determine the surface energy budget. However, the interactions among clouds, aerosols, and radiative fluxes in the Arctic are still poorly understood. To address these uncertainties, the Ny-Ålesund Aerosol Cloud Experiment (NASCENT) study was conducted from September 2019 to August 2020 in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. The campaign’s primary goal was to elucidate the life cycle of aerosols in the Arctic and to determine how they modulate cloud properties throughout the year. In situ and remote sensing observations were taken on the ground at sea level, at a mountaintop station, and with a tethered balloon system. An overview of the meteorological and the main aerosol seasonality encountered during the NASCENT year is introduced, followed by a presentation of first scientific highlights. In particular, we present new findings on aerosol physicochemical and molecular properties. Further, the role of cloud droplet activation and ice crystal nucleation in the formation and persistence of mixed-phase clouds, and the occurrence of secondary ice processes, are discussed and compared to the representation of cloud processes within the regional Weather Research and Forecasting Model. The paper concludes with research questions that are to be addressed in upcoming NASCENT publications.

2. Microphysical explanation of the RH-dependent water affinity of biogenic organic aerosol and its importance for climate

Abstract

A large fraction of atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) originates from natural emissions that are oxidized in the atmosphere to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Isoprene (IP) and monoterpenes (MT) are the most important precursors of SOA originating from forests. The climate impacts from OA are currently estimated through parameterizations of water uptake that drastically simplify the complexity of OA. We combine laboratory experiments, thermodynamic modeling, field observations, and climate modeling to (1) explain the molecular mechanisms behind RH-dependent SOA water-uptake with solubility and phase separation; (2) show that laboratory data on IP- and MT-SOA hygroscopicity are representative of ambient data with corresponding OA source profiles; and (3) demonstrate the sensitivity of the modeled aerosol climate effect to assumed OA water affinity. We conclude that the commonly used single-parameter hygroscopicity framework can introduce significant error when quantifying the climate effects of organic aerosol. 6. Induction of parturition in sows with prostaglandin analog Alfaprostol

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of intramuscular administration of 2 mg of alfaprostol in sows at the end of pregnancy in the induction of parturition. Ninety-six multiparous sows included in this trial were treated with alfaprostol between 111–115 days of gestation. The mean interval from injection to the birth of first piglet was 25,17±4,12 hours. The percentage of sows that farrowed during normal working hours (22 to 30 hours after injection) was 83%. The data showed that the days of gestation and the parity of animals as factors did not have significant effects on the onset of parturition. These results indicate that a single injection of 2 mg alfaprostol will successfully induce parturition the following day in the majority of the treated sows.

Abstract

Bubbles bursting from whitecaps are considered to be the most effective mechanism for particulate matter to be ejected into the atmosphere from the Earth's oceans. To realistically predict the climate effect of marine aerosols, global climate models require process-based understanding of particle formation from bubble bursting. During a cruise on the highly biologically active waters of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean in the summer of 2006, the submicrometer primary marine aerosol produced by a jet of seawater impinging on a seawater surface was investigated. The produced aerosol size spectra were centered on 200 nm in dry diameter and were conservative in shape throughout the cruise. The aerosol number production was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water (r < -0.6 for particles of dry diameter Dp > 200 nm). An increased surfactant concentration as a result of biological activity affecting the oxygen saturation is thought to diminish the particle production. The lack of influence of chlorophyll on aerosol production indicates that hydrocarbons produced directly by the photosynthesis are not essential for sea spray production. The upward mixing of deeper ocean water as a result of higher wind speed appears to affect the aerosol particle production, making wind speed influence aerosol production in more ways than by increasing the amount of whitecaps. The bubble spectra produced by the jet of seawater was representative of breaking waves at open sea, and the particle number production was positively correlated with increasing bubble number concentration with a peak production of 40-50 particles per bubble. Abstract

In-situ observations of aerosol particles contained in cirrus crystals are presented and compared to interstitial aerosol size distributions (non-activated particles in between the cirrus crystals). The observations were conducted in cirrus clouds in the Southern and Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes during the INCA project. The first campaign in March and April 2000 was performed from Punta Arenas, Chile (54°S) in pristine air. The second campaign in September and October 2000 was performed from Prestwick, Scotland (53°N) in the vicinity of the North Atlantic flight corridor. Size distribution measurements of crystal residuals (particles remaining after evaporation of the crystals) show that small aerosol particles (Dp ‹ 0.1 μm) dominate the number density of residuals. The crystal residual size distributions were significantly different in the two campaigns. On average the residual size distributions were shifted towards larger sizes in the Southern Hemisphere. For a given integral residual number density, the calculated particle volume was on average three times larger in the Southern Hemisphere. This may be of significance to the vertical redistribution of aerosol mass by clouds in the tropopause region. In both campaigns the mean residual size increased slightly with increasing crystal number density. The form of the residual size distribution did not depend on temperature as one might have expected considering different modes of nucleation. The observations of ambient aerosol particles were consistent with the expected higher pollution level in the Northern Hemisphere. The fraction of residual particles only contributes to approximately a percent or less of the total number of particles, which is the sum of the residual and interstitial particles. Excellent agreement between the CVI and FSSP-300 probes was found supporting the assumption that each crystal is associated with only one residual particle.

Abstract

As part of the project INCA (Interhemispheric Differences in Cirrus Properties from Anthropogenic Emissions) two aircraft field campaigns have been performed to study aerosol and cirrus cloud properties of the upper troposphere (UT) in the midlatitudes of the southern hemisphere (SH) and the northern hemisphere (NH). This paper focuses on the measurements of UT number concentrations and tropospheric vertical profiles of volatile and refractory Aitken as well as total accumulation mode particles. The results are discussed with respect to interhemispheric differences. Aerosol number concentrations in the NH are more variable and typically a factor of 2–3 higher. The SH data considerably extend the few existing UT in situ aerosol measurements in the SH midlatitudes.

Abstract

Original microphysical and optical measurements were obtained in cirrus clouds on the Southern and Northern hemispheres during the INCA experiments using four independent techniques: (1) the Counterflow Virtual Impactor, (2) the PMS FSSP-300, (3) the PMS 2D-C and (4) the Polar Nephelometer probes. The combination of these four techniques provides a description of particles within a diameter range varying from a few micrometers (typically 3 μm) to 800 μm. Because of the presence of small ice crystals in cirrus clouds, it is particularly important to overcome the limited accuracy of the sensors used in the experiments for the cloud microphysical measurements. Representative examples of combined results suggest that the available measurements are reliable and can be used for the ongoing comparison between the results from the SH and NH campaigns. The results give the definite picture that the observations of numerous (5 to 10 cm-3) small ice crystals in cirrus clouds are a relatively common microphysical feature.

Abstract

Aerosol particles are essential constituents of the Earth’s atmosphere, impacting the earth radiation balance directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. In contrast to most greenhouse gases, aerosol particles have short atmospheric residence times, resulting in a highly heterogeneous distribution in space and time. There is a clear need to document this variability at regional scale through observations involving, in particular, the in situ near-surface segment of the atmospheric observation system. This paper will provide the widest effort so far to document variability of climate-relevant in situ aerosol properties (namely wavelength dependent particle light scattering and absorption coefficients, particle number concentration and particle number size distribution) from all sites connected to the Global Atmosphere Watch network. High-quality data from almost 90 stations worldwide have been collected and controlled for quality and are reported for a reference year in 2017, providing a very extended and robust view of the variability of these variables worldwide. The range of variability observed worldwide for light scattering and absorption coefficients, single-scattering albedo, and particle number concentration are presented together with preliminary information on their long-term trends and comparison with model simulation for the different stations. The scope of the present paper is also to provide the necessary suite of information, including data provision procedures, quality control and analysis, data policy, and usage of the ground-based aerosol measurement network.
