Purpose The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) is often described in daily clinical reports of FDG PET-CT. We investigated whether it would be possible to localize the voxel automatically based on the SUVmax. Methods The institutional review board approved this retrospective study. We investigated a total of 112 lesions from 30 FDG PET-CT images acquired with 3 different scanners. The number of voxels showing the given SUVmax was counted, where SUVmax was provided with various degrees of precision, such as 3, 3.1, 3.14, 3.142. The effects of local maximum restriction, where only local maximum voxels were chosen, were evaluated. Results SUVmax ranged from 1.3 to 49.1 (median = 5.6, IQR = 5.2). Generally, when larger and more precise SUVmax values were given, fewer voxels were included in the range. The local maximum restriction was very effective. The local structures of 122-type paradium arsenides, namely BaPd$_2$As$_2$ and SrPd$_2$As$_2$, are examined by As K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements to find a possible correlation between the variation of their superconducting transition temperature and the local structure. The local atomic distances are found to be consistent with average distances measured by diffraction techniques. The temperature dependence of mean square relative displacements reveal that, while BaPd$_2$As$_2$ is characterized by a local As-Pd soft mode, albeit with larger atomic disorder, SrPd$_2$As$_2$ shows anomalous As-Pd correlations with a kink at $\sim$160 K due to hardening by raising temperature. The electronic-structural modulations of Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ (0 $\leqq x\leqq$ 0.12) have been examined by resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) techniques at both the Ir and Te edges. Charge-density-wave-like superstructure with wave vectors of $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5), (1/8 0 $-$1/8), and (1/6 0 $-$1/6) are observed on the same sample of IrTe$_2$ at the lowest temperature, the patterns of which are controlled by the cooling speeds. In contrast, superstructures around $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5) are observed for doped samples (0.02 $\leqq x\leqq$ 0.05). The superstructure reflections persist to higher Pt substitution than previously assumed, demonstrating that a charge density wave (CDW) can coexists with superconductivity. The analysis of the energy-dependent REXS and RIXS lineshape reveals the importance of the Te 5$p$ state rather than the Ir 5$d$ states in the formation of the spatial modulation of these systems. However, prognostic factors in patients with candidemia have not yet been elucidated in detail. The aim of the present study was to analyze prognostic factors for candidemia using the mortality rate and Candida isolates of patients with candidemia. Seventy-five patients with candidemia were analyzed between January 2007 and December 2013. The main outcome of this study was the 30-day mortality rate after the diagnosis of candidemia. The acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score (APACHE II score) was measured in 34 patients (45.3%). Odds ratios (ORs) for death due to candidemia were analyzed using a multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis. Twenty (26.6%) patients died within 30 days of being diagnosed with candidemia. Non-survivors had a significantly higher APACHE II score (n=7, mean; 18.9±4.5) than that of survivors (n=27, mean; 14.0±5.0). Advanced age (OR =1.1, 95% confidence interval =1.01–1.23, P=0.04) was a significant risk factor for a high mortality rate, whereas removal of a central venous catheter (OR =0.03, 95% confidence interval =0.002–0.3, P=0.01) was associated with a lower mortality rate. Seventy-six Candida spp. were isolated from blood cultures: Candida albicans 28 (36.8%), Candida parapsilosis 23 (30.2%), Candida guilliermondii 16 (21.0%), Candida glabrata four (5.2%), Candida tropicalis two (2.6%), and Candida spp. three (3.9%) that could not be identified. A combined resistivity and hard x-ray diffraction study of superconductivity and charge ordering in $\mathrm{Ir_{1-x}Pt_xTe_2}$, as a function of Pt substitution and externally applied hydrostatic pressure, is presented. Experiments are focused on samples near the critical composition $x_c\sim 0.045$ where competition and switching between charge order and superconductivity is established. We show that charge order as a function of pressure in $\mathrm{Ir_{0.95}Pt_{0.05}Te_{2}}$ is preempted - and hence triggered - by a structural transition. Charge ordering appears uniaxially along the short crystallographic (1,0,1) domain axis with a $\mathrm{(\frac{1}{5},0,\frac{1}{5})}$ modulation. The expression of cytokines mRNA, including Interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4 and Interferon (IFN)-γ and lymphocyte proliferation stimulated in vitro with either Escherichia coli (E. coli) or Staphylococcus aureus (S.A.) by Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) obtained from Holstein dairy cows were examined after the onset of ketosis or milk fever of field cases during the lactation period. The cows were used 50 to 150 days after calving in this study and divided into three groups; seventeen cows with milk fever (MF Group, 94.9±8.6 days after calving), ten cows with ketosis (Ketosis Group, 96.3±10.2 days after calving) and twenty-seven cows with no clinical diseases (Control Group, 89.4±5.4 days after calving). PBMC were stimulated in vitro by soluble antigen of E. coli or S.A. together with recombinant IL-2. The numbers of the peripheral blood T cells and monocyte were lower in the Ketosis Group in comparison with those in the Control Group and a significant difference was found in the number of CD3^+TcR1-N12^+T cells. There was a significantly lower lymphocyte proliferation stimulated with E. coli and S.A. in the Ketosis Group compared to that in the Control Group. Expression of IL-2, IL-4 and IFN-γ mRNA in PBMC stimulated with S.A. in the Ketosis Group was significantly lower than that in the Control Group, but these cytokine expression showed no group differences when PBMC were stimulated with E. coli. The present study demonstrated the onset of ketosis during the lactation period decreases reactivity of PBMC at least when they were stimulated with S.A in vitro.

Introduction: Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) play a major role in suppressing the immune system during the formation of the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, which transmits an inhibitory signal to reduce T cell activity. PD-L1 is often expressed in various malignant tumors. In contrast, PD-1 is generally observed in activated lymphocytes and myeloid-derived dendritic cells. Of the malignant cells, only Jurkat cells under special conditions and angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma tissue cells express PD-1 on their surface. Methods: To clarify whether the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway participates in the immunotolerance of small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells, we examined the expressions of PD-1 and PD-L1 on the cell surface of SCLC cell lines using flow cytometry and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results: Among the four SCLC cell lines examined, only SBC-3 expressed both PD-1 and PD-L1. Conclusions: We demonstrated that both PD-1 and PD-L1 molecules were co-expressed on the surface of SCLC cells. Although the biological implications of this remain unclear, we speculate that PD-1 and its ligand on the SCLC cells may participate in the growth inhibition of tumor cells as reported in cytotoxic T cells.

We report on the real space profile of spin polarons in the quasi two-dimensional frustrated dimer spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 doped with 0.16% of Zn. The 11B nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum exhibits 15 additional boron sites near non-magnetic Zn impurities. With the help of exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, we have deduced from the boron spectrum the distribution of local magnetizations at the Cu sites with fine spatial resolution, providing direct evidence for an extended spin polaron. The coupled electronic-structural modulations of the ligand states in IrTe$_2$ have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Distinctive pre-edge structures are observed at the Te-$M_{4,5}$ (3$d$ $\rightarrow$ 5$p$) absorption edge, indicating the presence of a Te 5$p$-Ir 5$d$ covalent state near the Fermi level. An enhancement of the REXS signal near the Te 3$d$ $\rightarrow$ 5$p$ resonance at the $Q\!=\!(1/5,0,-1/5)$ superlattice reflection is observed below the structural transition temperature $T_s\sim$ 280 K. The analysis of the energy-dependent REXS lineshape reveals the key role played by the spatial modulation of the covalent Te 5$p$-Ir 5$d$ bond-density in driving the stripe-like order in IrTe$_2$, and uncovers its coupling with the charge and/or orbital order at the Ir sites. The similarity between these findings and the charge-ordering phenomenology observed in the high-T$_c$ superconducting cuprates suggests that the iridates may harbor similar exotic phases., 13 pages, 10 figures

We report a photoemission and x-ray absorption study on Au1-xPtxTe2 (x = 0 and 0.35) triangular lattice in which superconductivity is induced by Pt substitution for Au. Au 4f and Te 3d core-level spectra of AuTe2 suggests a valence state of Au2+(Te2)2-, which is consistent with its distorted crystal structure with Te-Te dimers and compressed AuTe6 otahedra. On the other hand, valence-band photoemission spectra and pre-edge peaks of Te 3d absorption edge indicate that Au 5d bands are almost fully occupied and that Te 5p holes govern the transport properties and the lattice distortion. The two apparently conflicting pictures can be reconciled by strong Au 5d/Au 6s-Te 5p hybridization. Absence of a core-level energy shift with Pt substitution is inconsistent with the simple rigid band picture for hole doping. The Au 4f core-level spectrum gets slightly narrow with Pt substitution, indicating that the small Au 5d charge modulation in distorted AuTe2 is partially suppressed., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Physical Review B

Background: Neuraminidase inhibitors were widely used during the 2009-10 influenza A H1N1 pandemic, but evidence for their effectiveness in reducing mortality is uncertain. We did a meta-analysis of individual participant data to investigate the association between use of neuraminidase inhibitors and mortality in patients admitted to hospital with pandemic influenza A H1N1pdm09 virus infection. Methods: We assembled data for patients (all ages) admitted to hospital worldwide with laboratory confirmed or clinically diagnosed pandemic influenza A H1N1pdm09 virus infection. We identified potential data contributors from an earlier systematic review of reported studies addressing the same research question. In our systematic review, eligible studies were done between March 1, 2009 (Mexico), or April 1, 2009 (rest of the world), until the WHO declaration of the end of the pandemic (Aug 10, 2010); however, we continued to receive data up to March 14, 2011, from ongoing studies. We did a meta-analysis of individual participant data to assess the association between neuraminidase inhibitor treatment and mortality (primary outcome), adjusting for both treatment propensity and potential confounders, using generalised linear mixed modelling. We assessed the association with time to treatment using time-dependent Cox regression shared frailty modelling. Findings: We included data for 29234 patients from 78 studies of patients admitted to hospital between Jan 2, 2009, and March 14, 2011. Compared with no treatment, neuraminidase inhibitor treatment (irrespective of timing) was associated with a reduction in mortality risk (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0·81; 95% CI 0·70-0·93; p=0·0024). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 shows that the Fe 3d electrons in the FeAs layer form the hole-like Fermi pocket at the zone center and the electron-like Fermi pockets at the zone corners as commonly seen in various Fe-based superconductors. The FeAs layer is heavily electron doped and has relatively good two dimensionality. On the other hand, the Ir 5d electrons are metallic and glassy probably due to atomic disorder related to the Ir 5d orbital instability. Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 exhibits a unique electronic state where the Bloch electrons in the FeAs layer coexist with the glassy electrons in the Ir4As8 layer., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have studied local structure of IrTe2 by Ir L-3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements as a function of temperature to investigate origin of the observed structural phase transition at T-s similar to 270 K. The EXAFS results show an appearance of longer Ir-Te bond length (Delta R similar to 0.05 angstrom) at T < T-s. We have found Ir-Ir dimerization, characterized by distinct Ir-Ir bond lengths (Delta R similar to 0.13 angstrom), existing both above and below T-s. The results suggest that the phase transition in IrTe2 should be an order-disorder-like transition of Ir-Ir dimers assisted by Ir-Te bond correlations, thus indicating important role of the interaction between the Ir 5d and Te 5p orbitals in this transition.

During the influenza pandemic of 2009, the number of viral pneumonia cases showed a marked increase in comparison with seasonal influenza viruses. Mutations at amino acid 222 (D222G mutations) in the virus hemagglutinin (HA) molecule, known to alter the receptor-recognition properties of the virus, were detected in a number of the more severely-affected patients in the early phases of the pandemic. To understand the background for the emergence of the mutant amino acid D222G in human lungs, we conducted histological examinations on lung specimens of patients from Mexico who had succumbed in the pandemic. Prominent regenerative and hyperplastic changes in the alveolar type II pneumocytes, which express avian-type sialoglycan receptors in the respiratory tract of severely affected individuals, were observed in the Mexican patients. An infection model utilizing guinea pigs, which was chosen in order to best simulate the sialic acid distribution of severe pneumonia in human patients, demonstrated an increase of D222G mutants and a delay in the diminution of mutants in the lower respiratory tract in comparison to the upper respiratory tract. Our data suggests that the predominance of avian-type sialoglycan receptors in the pneumonic lungs may contribute to the emergence of viral HA mutants. This data comprehensively illustrates the mechanisms for the emergence of mutants in the clinical samples.

The effects of phosphorus doping on the structural and superconducting phase transitions of BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ were studied. The specific heat, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility were measured. The results revealed an abrupt increase in the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) from 0.6 K in the triclinic phase (space group P$\bar{1}$) with less phosphorus (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.067) to 3.3 K in the tetragonal phase (space group I4/mmm) with more phosphorus ($x$ $\geq$ 0.067). Our data analysis suggests that a doping-induced softening related to an in-plane Ni and As(P) phonon mode is responsible for the enhanced superconductivity in the tetragonal phase., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on single-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_6$ to clarify the origin of the pseudogap. By using various photon energies, we have succeeded in directly observing two different pseudogaps with two different energy scales which coexist in the antinodal region: one reflects the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing strength while the other has a larger energy scale suggesting an origin distinct from superconductivity. Several recent studies have investigated the dynamics of cold atoms in optical lattices subject to AC forcing; the theoretically predicted renormalization of the tunneling amplitudes has been verified experimentally. Recent observations include global motion of the atom cloud, such as giant "Super-Bloch Oscillations" (SBOs). We show that, in order to understand unexplained features of SBOs, in addition to the renormalization of the tunneling, a new and important phase correction must be included. We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic fields of Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$, in which hole carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic correlation with incommensurability $\delta=0.21$, whereas a Fe-free compound shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature in the form of $ln(1/T)$ and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation. Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. Numerous theoretical and experimental studies have investigated the dynamics of cold atoms subjected to time periodic fields. Novel effects dependent on the amplitude and frequency of the driving field, such as Coherent Destruction of Tunneling have been identified and observed. However, in the last year or so, three distinct types of experiments have demonstrated for the first time, interesting behaviour associated with the driving phase: i.e. for systems experiencing a driving field of general form $V(x)\sin (\omega t + \phi)$, different types of large scale oscillations and directed motion were observed. We investigate and explain the phenomenon of Super-Bloch Oscillations (SBOs) in relation to the other experiments and address the role of initial phase in general. We analyse and compare the role of $\phi$ in systems with homogeneous forces ($V'(x)= const$), such as cold atoms in shaken or amplitude-modulated optical lattices, as well as non-homogeneous forces ($V'(x)\neq const$), such as the sloshing of atoms in driven traps, and clarify the physical origin of the different $\phi$-dependent effects., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure

Precise neutron-scattering experiments on La$_{1.88-y}$Sr$_{0.12+y}$Cu$_{0.99}$R$_{0.01}$O$_4$ ($y$=0 for R=Cu, Zn and $y$=0.01 for R=Ga, Fe) were performed to examine the stability of stripe order in cuprate oxides through impurity substitution effects. For all the impurity-substituted samples a static charge-density-wave order similar to that reported in the low-temperature-tetragonal phase (LTT) was discovered in the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase for the first time. Fe substitution significantly enhanced both the charge- and spin-density-wave orders. These results indicate that dynamical charge stripes can be stabilized into static ones around the Cu-site defects regardless of the type of crystal structure. Additionally, large magnetic moments at the Cu-site may induce a decrease in the Cu spin fluctuations around the defects, which in turn, enhances the static charge-density-wave order., 5 pages, 4 figures

We have performed an ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of slightly-overdoped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of pseudogap. By using a newly developed xenon-plasma light source, we determined the comprehensive momentum and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. We found that the antinodal pseudogap persists far above the superconducting transition temperature and is smoothly connected to the nodal gap. The characteristic temperature of the pseudogap scales well with the superconducting-gap size irrespective of the momentum location. Crab cavities have been installed in the KEKB B--Factory rings to compensate the crossing angle at the collision point and thus increase luminosity. The beam operation with crab crossing has been done since February 2007. This is the first experience with such cavities in colliders or storage rings. The crab cavities have been working without serious issues. Momentum dependent charge excitations of a two-leg ladder are investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of (La,Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41. In contrast to the case of a square lattice, momentum dependence of the Mott gap excitation of the ladder exhibits little change upon hole-doping, indicating the formation of hole pairs. Theoretical calculation based on a Hubbard model qualitatively explains this feature. In addition, experimental data shows intraband excitation as continuum intensity below the Mott gap and it appears at all the momentum transfers simultaneously. The intensity of the intraband excitation is proportional to the hole concentration of the ladder, which is consistent with optical conductivity measurements., 7 pages

We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2x2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. Neutron scattering experiments were performed on the undoped and hole-doped Ca$_{2+x}$Y$_{2-x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$, which consists of ferromagnetic edge-sharing CuO$_2$ chains. It was previously reported that in the undoped Ca$_2$Y$_2$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ there is an anomalous broadening of spin-wave excitations along the chain, which is caused mainly by the antiferromagnetic interchain interactions [Matsuda $et$ $al.$, Phys. Rev. B 63, 180403(R) (2001)]. A systematic study of temperature and hole concentration dependencies of the magnetic excitations shows that the magnetic excitations are softened and broadened with increasing temperature or doping holes irrespective of $Q$ direction. The broadening is larger at higher $Q$. A characteristic feature is that hole-doping is much more effective to broaden the excitations along the chain. It is also suggested that the intrachain interaction does not change so much with increasing temperature or doping although the anisotropic interaction and the interchain interaction are reduced. In the spin-glass phase ($x$=1.5) and nearly disordered phase ($x$=1.67) the magnetic excitations are much broadened in energy and $Q$. It is suggested that the spin-glass phase originates from the antiferromagnetic clusters, which are caused by the hole disproportionation., 8 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. B

We report the out-of-plane resistivity in the systematically oxygen-controlled single crystals Bi$_{1.74}$Pb$_{0.38}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis. Two characteristic temperatures $T^*$ and $T^{**}$ are found at which a semiconductor-like upturn starts to develop and the magnetoresistance changes its sign from positive to negative at lower temperature, respectively. The obtained phase diagram strongly suggests that the pseudogap temperature correlating to the superconducting gap is not $T^{*}$ but $T^{**}$. The gap opened at $T^*$ may relate to another phenomenon with the different energy scale such as the antiferromagnetic excitation due to the exchange interaction between Cu$^{2+}$ spins., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We report the out-of-plane resistivity in the systematically oxygen-controlled single crystals Bi$_{1.74}$Pb$_{0.38}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+��}$ in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis. Two characteristic temperatures $T^*$ and $T^{**}$ are found at which a semiconductor-like upturn starts to develop and the magnetoresistance changes its sign from positive to negative at lower temperature, respectively. The obtained phase diagram strongly suggests that the pseudogap temperature correlating to the superconducting gap is not $T^{*}$ but $T^{**}$. We have succeeded in growing large-size single-crystals of Ca$_{2+x}$Y$_{2-x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ with $0 \le x \le 1.67$ and measured the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetization curve, in order to study the magnetic ground state in the edge-sharing CuO$_2$ chain as a function of hole concentration and magnetic field. In $0 \le x \le 1.3$, it has been found that an antiferromagnetically ordered phase with the magnetic easy axis along the b-axis is stabilized and that a spin-flop transition occurs by the application of magnetic fields parallel to the b-axis. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature decreases with increasing $x$ and disappears around $x =$ 1.4. Alternatively, a spin-glass phase appears around $x = 1.5$. At $x = 1.67$ where the hole concentration is $\sim$ 1/3 per Cu, it appears that a spin-gap state is formed owing to the formation of spin-singlet pairs. No sign of the coexistence of an antiferromagnetically ordered state and a spin-gap one suggested in Ca$_{1-x}$CuO$_2$ has been found in Ca$_{2+x}$Y$_{2-x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Temperature dependence of the in-plane electrical resistivity, $\rho_{\rm ab}$, in various magnetic fields has been measured in the single-crystal La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x=0.08$, 0.10, 0.11 and La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x=0.12$. It has been found that the superconducting transition curve shows a so-called fan-shape broadening in magnetic fields for $x=0.08$, while it shifts toward the low-temperature side in parallel with increasing field for $x=0.11$ and 0.12 where the charge-spin stripe order is formed at low temperatures. As for $x=0.10$, the broadening is observed in low fields and it changes to the parallel shift in high fields above 9 T. Moreover, the normal-state value of $\rho_{\rm ab}$ at low temperatures markedly increases with increasing field up to 15 T. It is possible that these pronounced features of $x=0.10$ are understood in terms of the magnetic-field-induced stabilization of the stripe order suggested from the neutron-scattering measurements in the La-214 system. The $\rho_{\rm ab}$ in the normal state at low temperatures has been found to be proportional to ln(1/$T$) for $x=0.10$, 0.11 and 0.12. We have measured the thermal conductivity in the $ab$-plane of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x =$ 0.10, 0.115, 0.13) in magnetic fields up to 14 T parallel to the c-axis and also parallel to the $ab$-plane. By the application of magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis, the thermal conductivity has been found to be suppressed at low temperatures below the temperature $T_\kappa$ which is located above the superconducting transition temperature and is almost independent of the magnitude of the magnetic field. The suppression is marked in $x =$ 0.10 and 0.13, while it is small in $x =$ 0.115. Furthermore, no suppression is observed in the 1 % Zn-substituted La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{0.99}$Zn$_{0.01}$O$_4$ with $x =$ 0.115. Taking into account the experimental results that the temperature dependence of the relative reduction of the thermal conductivity is quite similar to the temperature dependence of the intensity of the incommensurate magnetic Bragg peak corresponding to the static stripe order and that the Zn substitution tends to stabilize the static order, it is concluded that the suppression of the thermal conductivity in magnetic fields is attributed to the development of the static stripe order. Substitution of two fluorine atoms on organic molecules is expected to alter both chemical reactivity and biological activity due to the strong electron-withdrawing nature of fluorine. The synthesis of partly gem-difluorinated compounds remains a significant challenge to synthetic organic chemists. We report that [2,3]-Wittig rearrangement of 1,1,2-trifluoroallylic ether gave a new type of partly gem-difluorinated allylic alcohol: 6-methyl-4,4,5-trifluorohept-1,5-dien-3-ol, 3, in a highly stereoselective fashion, and optical resolution of alcohol 3 was accomplished via lipase PS(PCL)-catalyzed reaction. Using this alcohol as the starting material, the first asymmetric synthesis of both enantiomers of point-fluorinated-eldanolides, 2,2,5,5,6-pentafluoroeldanolide 1 and 5,5,6-trifluoroeldanolide 2, analogues of the sex pheromone of the male African sugarcane borer, has been demonstrated.
