A recurrent-neural-network-based deep-learning model was developed to estimate the three-axis joint angles of an entire body with 17 bones during walking from three inertial measurement units (IMUs) — one each on the left wrist and heels. In this model, the acceleration and angular velocity of the previous 49 frames and current frame were considered as inputs. The architecture comprises two hidden layers (two long short-term memory layers) and a dense layer. The performance of the model was evaluated using the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Gait Database 2019 public dataset. Consequently, the root mean squared error of each joint angle was less than 12.28°. A comparison of the estimation results of the same model with IMUs at the pelvis and shanks revealed that the proposed model is advantageous in terms of balanced measurement accuracy and ease of use in realizing whole-body motion capture. Although the accuracy of the model was better than those of previous models in estimating the general whole-body motion from six IMUs, it was worse than that of a previous model in estimating only the lower-limb motion from three IMUs attached to the pelvis and shanks during walking. In the proposed model, IMUs are attached to the left wrist and heels, and whole-body motion can be easily captured using a smartwatch and smart shoes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the introduction of the five step jumps with run-up before the triple jump was effective for improving performance and increasing the jumping distance of the triple jump in college female jumpers, based on ground reaction force data during each of the hop, step and jump. The results showed that introducing a five-step jump with run-up before the triple jump trial reduced the horizontal velocity braking and increased the forward propulsion during the hop take-off. This measure was suggested to be an immediate strategy.

This paper is a rough survey based on the talk at RIMS about the joint works with Prof. A. S. Vasudeva Murthy and Prof. Keiya Uchida. This survey introduces our results for the phase space path integrals of higher-order parabolic type on ℝ[d] ([10][13][14]) and on the torus T[d] with T = ℝ/(2πℤ) ([15]).

Absorption in mind-wandering (MW) may worsen our mood and can cause psychological disorders. Researchers indicate the possibility that meta-awareness of MW prevents these mal-effects and enhances favorable consequences of MW, such as boosting creativity; thus, meta-awareness has attracted psychological and clinical attention. However, few studies have investigated the nature of meta-awareness of MW, because there has been no method to isolate and operate this ability. Therefore, we propose a new approach to manipulate the ability of meta-awareness. We used Pavlovian conditioning, tying to it an occurrence of MW and a neutral tone sound inducing the meta-awareness of MW. To perform paired presentations of the unconditioned stimulus (neutral tone) and the conditioned stimulus (perception accompanying MW), we detected participants' natural occurrence of MW via electroencephalogram and a machine-learning estimation method. The double-blinded randomized controlled trial with 37 participants found that a single 20-min conditioning session significantly increased the meta-awareness of MW as assessed by behavioral and neuroscientific measures. The core protocol of the proposed method is real-time feedback on participants' neural information, and in that sense, we can refer to it as neurofeedback. However, there are some differences from typical neurofeedback protocols, and we discuss them in this paper. Our novel classical conditioning is expected to contribute to future research on the modulation effect of meta-awareness on MW.

A three-dimensional digital globe system, Dagik Earth, has been developed by a group of geoscientists, software engineers, and educators for use in and out of school education and public outreach. The project aims to provide schools, science museums, and educators with the basic knowledge and recent progress in Earth and planetary sciences, and stimulate interest in them. The system is very simple and budget-friendly using a PC, a PC projector, and a spherical screen. The screen for this system is inexpensive, and any white sphere, such as a balance ball or balloon, can be used as the spherical screen. The three-dimensional presentation of the Earth and its data provides the audiences a view of looking down the Earth from space similar to large-scale three-dimensional globe systems, such as the Geo-cosmos of Mirai-kan, Japan, and Science On Sphere of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. The software is provided free of charge for educational and scientific use. English and Chinese versions are also available although the majority of users are in Japan. A permanent exhibition of Dagik Earth is installed in 23 science museums, including one in Taiwan. As well as digital globe, the project is also developing analogue globes using global Earth and planetary science data. Students make their own handmade globes in classrooms and science events and take them home. In addition to introducing the software of Dagik Earth, we would like to introduce analogue craft materials in the presentation. Background: To compare chronological changes in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) after low-dose-rate prostate extended-release therapy (LDR-BT) using the overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS) in patients aged ≥ 75 years (elderly group) versus those aged < 75 years (control group). Materials and Methods: Patients with prostate cancer who underwent LDR-BT at Gifu University Hospital were included in this study. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), OABSS, and quality of life-based on urinary symptoms (IPSS-QOL) were evaluated before and after LDR-BT. We compared chronological changes in IPSS, OABSS, and IPSS-QOL in the elderly group with those in the control group and assessed the association between the resolution of OABSS and clinicopathological covariates. Results: A total of 484 patients were enrolled in this study. In the elderly group, the total IPSS, OABSS, and frequency scores increased at 1 month postoperatively, whereas the control group showed an increase at 3 months postoperatively. Multivariate analysis identified changes from baseline to the maximum OABSS and pre-treatment OABSS as significant predictors of delayed resolution of OABSS after LDR-BT. Conclusions: Changes in pre-treatment OABSS and pre- and post-LDR-BT OABSS values were independent predictors of delayed resolution of OABSS; however, no correlation was found with age.

Iodine-125 low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT) is a treatment modality utilized in both localized and advanced prostate cancer (PCa). We aimed to evaluate the long-term oncological outcomes in patients with PCa who underwent LDR-BT, at a single institution in Japan.We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 340 consecutive patients with localized PCa who underwent LDR-BT between August 2004 and December 2014 at our institution. Patients with low-risk PCa who had a pretreatment prostate volume50 mL received neoadjuvant androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for at least 3 months before LDR-BT. Patients with intermediate-risk PCa were treated with a combination of LDR-BT and/or external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and/or ADT for 9 months. Patients with high-risk PCa underwent LDR-BT, EBRT, and ADT for 24 months. The endpoints of this study were biochemical recurrence-free survival (BRFS) and overall survival (OS). Additionally, the association between biochemical recurrence (BCR) and clinical/pathological covariates was analyzed.At the end of the follow-up period, nine patients (2.6%) showed BCR, and six patients (1.8%) developed secondary cancers after LDR-BT. The 5-year and 10-year BRFS rates were 99.4% and 95.3%, respectively. Factoring in the patients' ages, the 5-year and 10-year BRFS rates were 99.1% and 99.1%, respectively, in patients aged63 years. The rates were 100% and 89.4% in those aged ≤63 years, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, age ≤63 years was identified as a significant independent predictor of BCR after LDR-BT.Age ≤63 years was a significant predictor of BCR following LDR-BT. Although the risk of secondary malignant neoplasms should be considered when opting for LDR-BT in younger patients with PCa, the prevalence of them in these patients is relatively low. Therefore, clinicians should weigh the risks and benefits of definitive therapy in PCa, particularly in younger patients.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were proposed in 2013 in the United States for K–12 learning to emphasize the importance of science and engineering practices in the three dimensions of science learning. In this study, we show that DNA extraction experiments, which are familiar in the United States, can be used not only as demonstration experiments but also as educational material for science practices. We could visualize extracted DNA using an enzyme treatment with DNase and RNase and agarose gel electrophoresis. We conducted a science practice in which a DNA extraction experiment was used as an extracurricular club activity in Japan. The students made predictions, conducted experiments, obtained results, and reflected on their findings. Although there are still points needing improvement, our results indicate that the DNA extraction experiment can be used as a new teaching material for NGSS science practices.

Despite advances in perioperative management, recurrence after curative pancreatectomy is a critical issue in the treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The significance of local therapy for recurrent PDAC remains unclear.We reviewed the medical records of patients with PDAC who underwent curative resection at our institution between January 2009 and December 2019. We examined the patterns of relapse and assessed the clinical outcomes of patients with recurrence who underwent local therapy, including surgical resection, radiotherapy, and radiofrequency ablation.A total of 246 patients with PDAC who underwent R0 or R1 resection were included in this study. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate was 39.8%, and the 1-year recurrence-free survival rate was 51.2% for the entire population. Recurrence was observed in 172/246 (69.9%) patients, including multiple site recurrences in 50, liver metastasis in 41, locoregional recurrence in 34, and peritoneal dissemination in 27. Of the 172 patients, treatment was administered in 137 (79.7%), and 16 received local therapy, including surgical resection (n = 13), radiotherapy (n = 5), and RFA (n = 1). PS-matched analysis revealed that patients with recurrence who were treated with chemotherapy combined with local therapy showed better post-recurrence survival rates than those treated with chemotherapy alone (P = 0.016). Detailed clinical courses of these patients are presented in the main manuscript.Our results suggest that a multimodal approach may improve the clinical outcomes of patients with recurrent PDAC.

To examine the association of clinical, treatment, and dose parameters with late urinary toxicity after low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT) for prostate cancer, we retrospectively studied patients with prostate cancer who underwent LDR-BT from January 2007 through December 2016. Severe and moderate lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) were defined as IPSS ≥ 20 and ≥ 8, respectively; OAB was defined as a nocturnal frequency of ≥ 2 and a total OABSS of ≥ 3. In total, 203 patients (median age: 66 years) were included, with a mean follow-up of 8.4 years after treatment. The IPSS and OABSS worsened after 3 months of treatment; these scores improved to pretreatment levels after 18–36 months in most patients. Patients with a higher baseline IPSS and OABSS had a higher frequency of moderate and severe LUTS and OAB at 24 and 60 months, respectively. LUTS and OAB at 24 and 60 months were not correlated with the dosimetric factors of LDR-BT. Although the rate of long-term urinary toxicities assessed using IPSS and OABSS was low, the baseline scores were related to long-term function. Refining patient selection may further reduce long-term urinary toxicity.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have the advantage of being resilient to natural disasters. However, users hesitate to donate electricity when they lose the chance to recharge at the utility. Solar electric vehicles (SEVs) save energy through vehicle-integrated photovoltaics (VIPV) and make it possible to voluntarily donate excess energy, thus maintaining facility resilience. Given that the supply of solar energy to VIPV systems is not continuous and is difficult to forecast, the contribution of VIPV to the resilience of the larger energy system has been called into question. This is the first study in which the potential of VIPV to maintain utility resilience is investigated in the context of physical factors, such as irradiance, and social factors. The actual energy yield of a VIPV car was determined using an advanced 3D solar irradiation model under a nonuniform shading distribution, with validation from actual measures of solar irradiance on five orthogonal sides of the car body. The Monte Carlo method was used to model the complex factors in VIPV energy storage and energy donations under different scenarios. Depending on the climate, population density, and shading environment, the voluntary contribution of stored electricity in SEV is sufficient to provide disaster relief support.

Purpose Even though minor, stoma-related complications significantly impact quality of life, they are often excluded from clinical analyses that compare short-term postoperative outcomes of loop ileostomy (LI) and loop colostomy (LC). This study compares stoma-related complications between LI and LC after rectal resection, including minor complications, and discusses the characteristics of diverting stoma (DS) types. Methods A retrospective review was conducted in patients who underwent DS construction after rectal resection. Data on patient background and postoperative short-term outcomes, including stoma-related complications and morbidity after stoma closure, were collected and compared between LI and LC groups. Morbidities of all severity grades were targeted for analysis. Results A total of 47 patients (27 LI, 20 LC) underwent DS construction following rectal resection. Overall stoma-related complications, incidence of skin irritation, high-output stoma, and outlet obstruction were found to be significantly higher in the LI group. In addition, high-output stoma and outlet obstruction were absent in the LC group. Regarding morbidity after stoma closure, operation times and surgical site infections were significantly higher in the LC group while anastomotic leakage after DS closure occurred (2 cases; 15%) in the LC group but not the LI group. Conclusion Because stoma-related complications were found to be significantly higher in the LI group, and even these minor complications may impair patient’s QOL, early LI closure is recommended. For LC, stoma-related morbidities are lower but post-closure leakage is a calculated risk.

Non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most frequent cause of death from cancer worldwide. Despite the availability of active chemotherapy regimens and EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors, all advanced patients develop recurrent disease after first-line therapy. Although Hsp27 is a stress-induced chaperone that promotes acquired resistance in several cancers, its relationship to treatment resistance in NSCLC has not been defined. Understanding adaptive responses of acquired resistance will help guide new strategies to control NSCLC. Hsp27 levels were evaluated in an HCC827 erlotinib-resistant–derived cell line (HCC-827Resistant), and sensitivity to erlotinib was examined in Hsp27-overexpressing A549 cells. The role of Hsp27 in both erlotinib and cytotoxic treatment resistance was evaluated in HCC-827 and A549 NSCLC cells using the Hsp27 antisense drug OGX-427. The effect of OGX-427 in combination with erlotinib was also assessed in mice bearing A549 xenografts. Hsp27 is induced by erlotinib and protects NSCLC cells from treatment-induced apoptosis, whereas OGX-427 sensitizes NSCLC cells to erlotinib. Interestingly, increased resistance to erlotinib was observed when Hsp27 was increased either in HCC827 erlotinib-resistant or overexpressing A549 cells. Combining OGX-427 with erlotinib significantly enhanced antitumor effects in vitro and delayed A549 xenograft growth in vivo. OGX-427 also significantly enhanced the activity of cytotoxic drugs used for NSCLC. These data indicate that treatment-induced Hsp27 contributes to the development of resistance, and provides preclinical proof-of-principle that inhibition of stress adaptive pathways mediated by Hsp27 enhances the activity of erlotinib and chemotherapeutics. Nausea and vomiting are two of the most distressing adverse events of cancer radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to examine the control rate and risk factors associated with nausea and vomiting in patients with cervical cancer receiving radiotherapy.This retrospective study examined patients with cervical cancer who received radiotherapy alone or with concomitant cisplatin. Patients who received radiotherapy alone were not administered antiemetic premedication, while patients who received radiotherapy with concomitant weekly cisplatin (40 mg/mMultivariate analysis indicated that younger age and concomitant weekly cisplatin were significant factors associated with non-CR across 5 weeks of treatment in patients who received radiotherapy. The proportion achieving CR among younger patients (65 years) who received radiotherapy alone or with concomitant cisplatin was significantly lower than that among older patients (≥65 years) (Concomitant cisplatin: 27% vs. 67%, p=0.049; Radiotherapy alone: 62% vs. 91%, p=0.166). However, the proportion of patients achieving CR across 5 weeks of treatment was insufficient in all groups except for those aged ≥ 65 years who received radiotherapy alone.Antiemetic prophylaxis should be considered for younger patients with cervical cancer undergoing radiotherapy alone. Further, neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist should be added to 5-hydroxytryptamine type-3 receptor antagonist and dexamethasone as antiemetic prophylactic therapy for patients with cervical cancer undergoing radiotherapy with concomitant weekly doses of 40 mg/m

The J-PARC is a hadron-accelerator facility to provide secondary beams of kaons, pions, neutrinos, muons, and the others together with the primary proton beam for investigating a wide range of science projects. High-energy hadron physics can be studied by using high-momentum beams of unseparated hadrons, which are essentially pions, and also primary protons. In this report, possible experiments are explained on color transparency and generalized parton distributions (GPDs). These projects are complementary to lepton-scattering experiments at JLab, COMPASS/AMBER, and future electron-ion colliders. Because of hadron-beam energies up to 30 GeV, the J-PARC is a unique facility to investigate the transition region from the hadron degrees of freedom to the quark-gluon one. It is suitable for finding mechanisms of the color transparency. Such color-transparency studies are also valuable for clarifying factorization of hadron-production processes in extracting the GPDs from actual measurements. K+/Na+ homeostasis is important for land plants, particularly under salt stress. In this study, the structure and ion transport properties of the high-affinity K+ transporter (HKT) of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha were investigated. Only one HKT gene, MpHKT1, was identified in the genome of M. polymorpha. Phylogenetic analysis of HKT proteins revealed that non-seed plants possess HKTs grouped into a clade independent of the other two clades including HKTs of angiosperms. A distinct long hydrophilic domain was found in the C-terminus of MpHKT1. Complementary DNA (cDNA) of truncated MpHKT1 (t-MpHKT1) encoding the MpHKT_Δ596-812 protein was used to examine the functions of the C-terminal domain. Both MpHKT1 transporters fused with enhanced green fluorescent protein at the N-terminus were localized to the plasma membrane when expressed in rice protoplasts. Two-electrode voltage clamp experiments using Xenopus laevis oocytes indicated that MpHKT1 mediated the transport of monovalent alkali cations with higher selectivity for Na+ and K+, but truncation of the C-terminal domain significantly reduced the transport activity with a decrease in the Na+ permeability. Overexpression of MpHKT1 or t-MpHKT1 in M. polymorpha conferred accumulation of higher Na+ levels and showed higher Na+ uptake rates, compared to those of wild-type plants; however, phenotypes with t-MpHKT1 were consistently weaker than those with MpHKT1. Together, these findings suggest that the hydrophilic C-terminal domain plays a unique role in the regulation of transport activity and ion selectivity of MpHKT1.

Purpose: Prostate cancer development is often associated with deletion or silencing of tumor suppressor phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a negative regulator of the phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3K)–Akt pathway, leading to resistance to various therapies in both the preclinical and clinical setting. Therefore, the PI3K–Akt pathway plays a central role in various cellular processes promoting survival signaling that can contribute to the malignant phenotype, and, consequently, is an attractive pharmacologic target. However, as single agents, the efficacy of AKT inhibitors may be limited by resistance mechanisms that result in minimal cell death in tumor cells.Experimental Design: We investigated the effects of the Akt inhibitor AZD5363 on cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, and Akt downstream pathway proteins. Survival mechanisms induced by AZD5363 were investigated. We then examined the impacts of inhibition of autophagy in combination with AZD5363 on cell proliferation and apoptosis. Furthermore, the anticancer activity of combination treatment of the lysosomotropic inhibitor of autophagy (chloroquine) with the Akt inhibitor AZD5363 was evaluated in PC-3 prostate cancer xenografts.Results: Here, we show that the Akt inhibitor AZD5363 affected the Akt downstream pathway by reducing p-mTOR, p-P70S6K, and p-S6K. While AZD5363 monotherapy induced G2 growth arrest and autophagy, it failed to induce significant apoptosis in PC-3 and DU145 prostate cancer cell lines. Blocking autophagy using pharmacologic inhibitors (3-methyladenine, chloroquine, and bafilomycin A) or genetic inhibitors (siRNA targeting Atg3 and Atg7) enhanced cell death induced by Akt inhibitor AZD5363 in these tumor prostate cell lines. Importantly, the combination of AZD5363 with chloroquine significantly reduced tumor volume by 84.9% compared with the control group and by 77.5% compared with either drug alone in PC3 xenografts.Conclusion: Taken together, these data show that the Akt inhibitor AZD5363 synergizes with the lysosomotropic inhibitor of autophagy chloroquine to induce apoptosis and delay tumor progression in prostate cancer models that are resistant to monotherapy AZD5363, providing a new therapeutic approach potentially translatable to patients.
