In this paper, we study the elastic properties of the entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O, using experimental and first principles techniques. Our measurements of the indentation modulus on grains with a wide range of crystallographic orientations of the entropy-stabilized oxide revealed a high degree of elastic isotropy at ambient conditions. First principles calculations predict mild elastic anisotropy for the paramagnetic structure, which decreases when the system is considered to be non-magnetic. When the antiferromagnetic state of CoO, CuO and NiO is accounted for in the calculations, a slight increase in the elastic anisotropy is observed, suggesting a coupling between magnetic ordering and the orientation dependent elastic properties. Furthermore, an examination of the local structure reveals that the isotropy is favored through local ionic distortions of Cu and Zn - due to their tendency to form tenorite and wurtzite phases. The relationships between the elastic properties of the multicomponent oxide and those of its constituent binary oxides are reviewed. These insights open up new avenues for controlling isotropy for technological applications through tuning composition and structure in the entropy-stabilized oxide or the high entropy compounds in general., 52 pages, includes 29 pages supplemental materials, 5 figures

We present a systematic study to address a longstanding mystery in magnetic materials and magnetism, whether there is giant saturation magnetization in Fe16N2 and why. Experimental results based on sputtered thin film samples are presented. The magnetism of Fe16N2 is discussed systematically from the aspects of material processing, magnetic characterization and theoretical investigation. It is observed that thin films with Fe16N2 + Fe8N mixture phases and high degree of N ordering, exhibit a saturation magnetization up to 2.68T at room temperature, which substantially exceeds the ferromagnetism limit based on the traditional band magnetism understanding. From X-ray magnetic circular Dichorism (XMCD) experiment, transport measurement and first-principle calculation based on LDA+U method, it is both experimentally and theoretically justified that the origin of giant saturation magnetization is correlated with the formation of highly localized 3d electron states in this Fe-N system. A large magnetocrystalline anisotropy for such a material is also discussed. Our proposed "cluster+atom" theory provides promising directions on designing novel magnetic materials with unique performances.

Magnetic materials with giant saturation magnetization have been a holy grail for magnetic researchers and condensed matter physicists for decades because of its great scientific and technological impacts. As described by the famous Slater-Pauling curve the material with highest Ms is the Fe65Co35 alloy. This was challenged in 1972 by a report on the compound Fe16N2 with Ms much higher than that of Fe65Co35. Following this claim, there have been enormous efforts to reproduce this result and to understand the magnetism of this compound. However, the reported Ms by different groups cover a broad range, mainly due to the unavailability of directly assessing Ms in Fe16N2. In this article, we report a direct observation of the giant saturation magnetization up to 2500 emu/cm3 using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) in epitaxial constrained Fe16N2 thin films prepared using a low-energy and surface-plasma-free sputtering process. The observed giant Ms is corroborated by a previously proposed Cluster + Atom model, the characteristic feature of which, namely, the directional charge transfer is evidenced by polarization-dependent x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES).
