Membrane electrode assemblies enable CO2 electrolysis at industrially relevant rates, yet their operational stability is often limited by formation of solid precipitates in the cathode pores, triggered by cation crossover from the anolyte due to imperfect ion exclusion by anion exchange membranes. Here we show that anolyte concentration affects the degree of cation movement through the membranes, and this substantially influences the behaviors of copper catalysts in catholyte-free CO2 electrolysers. Systematic variation of the anolyte (KOH or KHCO3) ionic strength produced a distinct switch in selectivity between either predominantly CO or C2+ products (mainly C2H4) which closely correlated with the quantity of alkali metal cation (K+) crossover, suggesting cations play a key role in C-C coupling reaction pathways even in cells without discrete liquid catholytes. Operando X-ray absorption and quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the Cu surface speciation showed a strong dependence on the anolyte concentration, wherein dilute anolytes resulted in a mixture of Cu+ and Cu0 surface species, while concentrated anolytes led to exclusively Cu0 under similar testing conditions. These results show that even in catholyte-free cells, cation effects (including unintentional ones) significantly influence reaction pathways, important to consider in future development of catalysts and devices.

The hard X ray beamline BAMline at BESSY II Berlin, Germany has now been in service for 20 amp; 8201;years. Several improvements have been implemented in this time, and this review provides an overview of the imaging methods available at the BAMline. Besides classic full field synchrotron X ray computed tomography SXCT , also absorption edge CT, synchrotron X ray refraction radiography SXRR , and synchrotron X ray refraction tomography SXRCT are used for imaging. Moreover, virtually any of those techniques are currently coupled in amp; 8201;situ or operando with ancillary equipment such as load rigs, furnaces, or potentiostats. Each of the available techniques is explained and both the current and the potential usage are described with corresponding examples. The potential use is manifold, the examples cover organic materials, composite materials, energy related materials, biological samples, and materials related to additive manufacturing. Hydrogen‐doped In2O3 (In2O3:H) is highly conductive while maintaining extraordinary transparency, thus making it a very attractive material for applications in optoelectronic devices such as (multijunction) solar cells or light‐emitting devices. However, the corresponding metal/In2O3:H contacts may exhibit undesirably high resistances, significantly deteriorating device performance. To gain insight into the underlying efficiency‐limiting mechanism, hard X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy is employed to in‐situ monitor annealing‐induced changes in the chemical structure of the Ag/In2O3:H interface system that is further complemented by ex‐situ electron microscopy analyses and contact resistance measurements. The observed evolution of the Ag‐ and In‐related photoelectron line intensities can be explained by significant intermixing across the Ag/In2O3:H interface. The corresponding lineshape broadening of the Ag 3d spectra is attributed to the formation of Ag2O and AgO, which becomes significant at temperatures above approximately 160 °C. However, after annealing to 300 °C, instead of the formation of an insulating AgOx interfacial layer, it is found i) In to be rather homogeneously distributed in the complete Ag/In2O3:H stack, ii) Ag diffusing into the In2O3:H, and iii) an improvement of the contact resistance rather than its often‐reported deterioration.

Lead halide perovskite solar cells have reached power conversion efficiencies during the past few years that rival those of crystalline silicon solar cells, and there is a concentrated effort to commercialize them. The use of gold electrodes, the current standard, is prohibitively costly for commercial application. Copper is a promising low-cost electrode material that has shown good stability in perovskite solar cells with selective contacts. Furthermore, it has the potential to be self-passivating through the formation of CuI, a copper salt which is also used as a hole selective material. Based on these opportunities, we investigated the interface reactions between lead halide perovskites and copper in this work. Specifically, copper was deposited on the perovskite surface, and the reactions were followed in detail using synchrotron-based and in-house photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show a rich interfacial chemistry with reactions starting upon deposition and, with the exposure to oxygen and moisture, progress over many weeks, resulting in significant degradation of both the copper and the perovskite. The degradation results not only in the formation of CuI, as expected, but also in the formation of two previously unreported degradation products. The hope is that a deeper understanding of these processes will aid in the design of corrosion-resistant copper-based electrodes.

The interface formation and chemical and electronic structure of the Cd,Zn S Ga CuSbS2 thin film solar cell heterojunction were studied using hard X ray photoelectron spectroscopy HAXPES of the bare absorber and a buffer absorber sample set for which the buffer thickness was varied between 1 and 50 nm. We find a heavily intermixed interface, involving Cu, Zn, and Cd as well as significant Ga and Cu profiles in the buffer. The valence band VB offset at the buffer absorber interface was derived as amp; 8722;1.3 0.1 eV, which must be considered an upper bound as the Cu diffused into the buffer might form a Cu derived VB maximum located closer to the Fermi level. The estimated conduction band minimum was cliff like; a situation made more severe considering the Cu deficiency found for the CuSbS2 surface. The complex interface structure s effect on the performance of Cd,Zn S Ga CuSbS2 based solar cells and its limitation is discussed together with possible mitigation strategies

We present experimental evidence for soft X-ray induced intramolecular hydrogen transfer in the protonated synthetic tri-oligonucleotide d($^{\mbox{\footnotesize{F}}}$UAG) in the gas-phase. The trinucleotide cations were stored in a cryogenic ion trap and exposed to monochromatic synchrotron radiation. Photoionization and photofragmentation product ion yields were recorded as a function of photon energy. Predominanly glycosidic bond cleavage leading to formation of nucleobase-related fragments is observed. In most cases, glycosidic bond cleavage is accompanied by single or double hydrogen transfer. The combination of absorption-site-sensitive soft X-ray spectroscopy with fragment specific mass spectrometry allows to directly relate X-ray absorption site and fragmentation site. We observe pronounced resonant features in the competition between single and double hydrogen transfer towards nucleobases. A direct comparison of experimental data with time-dependent density functional theory calculations, using short range corrected hybrid functionals, reveal that these hydrogen transfer processes are universal and not limited to population of particular excited states localized at the nucleobases. Instead, hydrogen transfer can occur upon X-ray absorption in any nucleobase and in the DNA backbone. Resonances seem to occur because of site-selective suppression of hydrogen transfer channels. Furthermore, non-covalent interactions of the optimized ground state geometries were investigated to identify intramolecular hydrogen bonds along which hydrogen transfer is most likely.

Commercial use of lead halide perovskites requires improved thermal stability and therefore a better understanding of their degradation mechanisms. The thermal degradation of three clean perovskite single crystal surfaces (MAPbI(3), MAPbBr(3), FAPbBr(3)) was investigated using synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy. Central findings are that the halide has a large impact on thermal stability and that the degradation of formamidnium results in the formation of a new organic species at the FAPbBr(3) crystal surface.

Topological charge plays a significant role in a range of physical systems. In particular, observations of real space topological objects in magnetic materials have been largely limited to skyrmions states with a unitary topological charge. Recently, more exotic states with varying topology, such as antiskyrmions, merons, or bimerons and 3D states such as skyrmion strings, chiral bobbers, and hopfions, have been experimentally reported. Along these lines, the realization of states with higher order topology has the potential to open new avenues of research in topological magnetism and its spintronic applications. Here, real space imaging of such spin textures, including skyrmion, skyrmionium, skyrmion bag, and skyrmion sack states, observed in exfoliated flakes of the van der Waals magnet Fe3 amp; 8722;xGeTe2 FGT is reported. These composite skyrmions may emerge from seeded, loop like states condensed into the stripe domain structure, demonstrating the possibility to realize spin textures with arbitrary integer topological charge within exfoliated flakes of 2D magnets. The general nature of the formation mechanism motivates the search for composite skyrmion states in both well known and new magnetic materials, which may yet reveal an even richer spectrum of higher order topological objects

Due to the compact two-dimensional interlayer pore space and the high density of interlayer molecular adsorption sites, clay minerals are competitive adsorption materials for carbon dioxide capture. We demonstrate that with a decreasing interlayer surface charge in a clay mineral, the adsorption capacity for CO2 increases, while the pressure threshold for adsorption and swelling in response to CO2 decreases. Synthetic nickel-exchanged fluorohectorite was investigated with three different layer charges varying from 0.3 to 0.7 per formula unit of Si4O10F2. We associate the mechanism for the higher CO2 adsorption with more accessible space and adsorption sites for CO2 within the interlayers. The low onset pressure for the lower-charge clay is attributed to weaker cohesion due to the attractive electrostatic forces between the layers. The excess adsorption capacity of the clay is measured to be 8.6, 6.5, and 4.5 wt % for the lowest, intermediate, and highest layer charges, respectively. Upon release of CO2, the highest-layer charge clay retains significantly more CO2. This pressure hysteresis is related to the same cohesion mechanism, where CO2 is first released from the edges of the particles thereby closing exit paths and trapping the molecules in the center of the clay particles.

Immunomodulation of airway hyperreactivity by excretory-secretory (ES) products of the first larval stage (L1) of the gastrointestinal nematode Trichuris suis is reported by us and others. Here, we aimed to identify the proteins accounting for the modulatory effects of the T. suis L1 ES proteins and studied six selected T. suis L1 proteins for their immunomodulatory efficacy in a murine OVA-induced allergic airway disease model. In particular, an enzymatically active T. suis chitinase mediated amelioration of clinical signs of airway hyperreactivity, primarily associated with suppression of eosinophil recruitment into the lung, the associated chemokines, and increased numbers of RELMα+ interstitial lung macrophages. While there is no indication of T. suis chitinase directly interfering with dendritic cell activation or antigen presentation to CD4 T cells, treatment of allergic mice with the worm chitinase influenced the hosts’ own chitinase activity in the inflamed lung. The three-dimensional structure of the T. suis chitinase as determined by high-resolution X-ray crystallography revealed high similarities to mouse acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase) but a unique ability of T. suis chitinase to form dimers. Our data indicate that the structural similarities between the parasite and host chitinase contribute to the disease-ameliorating effect of the helminth-derived chitinase on allergic lung inflammation.

Soft X‐ray spectroscopy is a powerful method to investigate materials on an element selective level with respect to their atomic and electronic structure. However, its application is technically challenging for in situ or operando investigations of materials for electrochemical applications. Herein, we present a spectroelectrochemical flow‐cell designed to enable state‐of‐the‐art electrochemical characterization while being installed in a vacuum chamber for the direct accessibility of the electroactive sample to soft X‐rays. An overview of the application of soft X‐ray photon‐in–photon‐out spectroscopic studies to electromaterials is provided, along with discussions of experimental and technical considerations specific to this highly sensitive mode of analysis. Application of the cell for the in situ spectroelectrochemical characterization of an electrodeposited nickel oxide water electrooxidation catalyst is demonstrated.

Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have found a field-induced spin disordered state in an applied magnetic field range of 7.5 T < B (vertical to b-axis) < 10.5 T. The INS spectra were also simulated to tentatively extract the exchange interactions. As a 3d-magnet with a field-induced disordered state on an effective spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice, NCTO expands the Kitaev model to 3d compounds, promoting further interests on the spin-orbital effect in quantum magnets., 19 pages and 5 figures for main text. 16 pages and 6 figures for Supplemental Material

The Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain, originally introduced almost a century ago, is one of the best studied models in quantum mechanics due to its exact solution, but nevertheless it continues to present new discoveries. Its low-energy physics is described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of spinless fermions, similar to the conduction electrons in one-dimensional metals. In this work we investigate the Heisenberg spin-chain compound YbAlO3 and show that the weak interchain coupling causes Umklapp scattering between the left- and right-moving fermions and stabilizes an incommensurate spin-density wave order at q = 2kF under finite magnetic fields. These Umklapp processes open a route to multiple coherent scattering of fermions, which results in the formation of satellites at integer multiples of the incommensurate fundamental wavevector Q = nq. Our work provides surprising and profound insight into bandstructure control for emergent fermions in quantum materials, and shows how neutron diffraction can be applied to investigate the phenomenon of coherent multiple scattering in metals through the proxy of quantum magnetic systems., A field-induced incommensurate spin density wave order was observed in the spin-chain material YbAlO3; however, its mechanism is not fully understood. Here, using neutron scattering and numerical calculations, the authors propose a mechanism based on multiple fermion scattering caused by weak inter-chain coupling.

Root water uptake is an essential process for terrestrial plants that strongly affects the spatiotemporal distribution of water in vegetated soil. Fast neutron tomography is a recently established non-invasive imaging technique capable to capture the 3D architecture of root systems in situ and even allows for tracking of three-dimensional water flow in soil and roots. We present an in vivo analysis of local water uptake and transport by roots of soil-grown maize plants���for the first time measured in a three-dimensional time-resolved manner. Using deuterated water as tracer in infiltration experiments, we visualized soil imbibition, local root uptake, and tracked the transport of deuterated water throughout the fibrous root system for a day and night situation. This revealed significant differences in water transport between different root types. The primary root was the preferred water transport path in the 13-days-old plants while seminal roots of comparable size and length contributed little to plant water supply. The results underline the unique potential of fast neutron tomography to provide time-resolved 3D in vivo information on the water uptake and transport dynamics of plant root systems, thus contributing to a better understanding of the complex interactions of plant, soil and water., Zweitver��ffentlichungen der Universit��t Potsdam : Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Reihe; 1217

Oxygen release and irreversible cation migration are the main causes of voltage fade in Li-rich transition metal oxide cathode. But their correlation is not very clear and voltage decay is still a bottleneck. Herein, we modulate the oxygen anionic redox chemistry by constructing Li2ZrO3 slabs into Li2MnO3 domain in Li1.21Ni0.28Mn0.51O2, which induces the lattice strain, tunes the chemical environment for redox-active oxygen and enlarges the gap between metallic and anionic bands. This modulation expands the region in which lattice oxygen contributes capacity by oxidation to oxygen holes and relieves the charge transfer from anionic band to antibonding metal–oxygen band under a deep delithiation. This restrains cation reduction, metal–oxygen bond fracture, and the formation of localized O2 molecule, which fundamentally inhibits lattice oxygen escape and cation migration. The modulated cathode demonstrates a low voltage decay rate (0.45 millivolt per cycle) and a long cyclic stability., Voltage fade is a critical issue for Li-rich transition metal oxide cathode. BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened new horizons in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions., 19 pages, 8 figures

Research into practical applications of magnetic skyrmions, nanoscale solitons with interesting topological and transport properties, has traditionally focused on two dimensional (2D) thin-film systems. However, the recent observation of novel three dimensional (3D) skyrmion-like structures, such as hopfions, skyrmion strings (SkS), skyrmion bundles, and skyrmion braids, motivates the investigation of new designs, aiming to exploit the third spatial dimension for more compact and higher performance spintronic devices in 3D or curvilinear geometries. A crucial requirement of such device schemes is the control of the 3D magnetic structures via charge or spin currents, which has yet to be experimentally observed. In this work, we utilise real-space imaging to investigate the dynamics of a 3D SkS within a nanowire of Co8Zn9Mn3 at room temperature. Utilising single current pulses, we demonstrate current-induced nucleation of a single SkS, and a toggle-like positional switching of an individual Bloch point at the end of a SkS. The observations highlight the possibility to locally manipulate 3D topological spin textures, opening up a range of design concepts for future 3D spintronic devices.

The local electronic structure of the metal-active site and the deexcitation pathways of metalloporphyrins are crucial for numerous applications but difficult to access by commonly employed techniques. Here, we applied near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry and quantum-mechanical restricted active space calculations to investigate the electronic structure of the metal-active site of the isolated cobalt(iii) protoporphyrin IX cation (CoPPIX+) and its deexcitation pathways upon resonant absorption at the cobalt L-edge. The experiments were carried out in the gas phase, thus allowing for control over the chemical state and molecular environment of the metalloporphyrin. The obtained mass spectra reveal that resonant excitations of CoPPIX+ at the cobalt L3-edge lead predominantly to the formation of the intact radical dication and doubly charged fragments through losses of charged and neutral side chains from the macrocycle. The comparison between experiment and theory shows that CoPPIX+ is in a 3A2g triplet ground state and that competing excitations to metal-centred non-bonding and antibonding σ* molecular orbitals lead to distinct deexcitation pathways., Near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry (NEXAMS) and restricted active space (RAS) quantum mechanical calculations at the metal L-edge reveal the electronic structure and orbital-specific deexcitation pathways of gas-phase metalloporphyrins.

It has been used successfully to give insights into different aspects of the photodissociation of peptides and to probe the conformation of proteins. It is a current question whether the fragmentation pathways are sensitive toward effects of conformational isomerism, tautomerism, and intramolecular interactions in gas-phase peptides. To address this issue, we studied the cationic fragments of cryogenically cooled gas-phase leucine enkephalin ([LeuEnk+H]$^+$) and methionine enkephalin ([MetEnk+H]$^+$) produced upon soft X-ray photon absorption at the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen K-edges. The interpretation of the experimental ion yield spectra was supported by density-functional theory and restricted-open-shell configuration interaction with singles (DFT/ROCIS) calculations. The analysis revealed several effects that could not be rationalized based on the peptide’s amino acid sequences alone. Clear differences between the partial ion yields measured for both peptides upon C 1s → π*(C═C) excitations in the aromatic amino acid side chains give evidence for a sulfur–aromatic interaction between the methionine and phenylalanine side chain of [MetEnk+H]$^+$. Furthermore, a peak associated with N 1s → π*(C═N) transitions, linked to a tautomeric keto-to-enol conversion of peptide bonds, was only present in the photon energy resolved ion yield spectra of [MetEnk+H]$^+$., Published by ACS Publications, Washington, DC

Superalloy inspired Al10Co25Cr8Fe15Ni36Ti6 compositionally complex alloy is known for its γ-γ′ microstructure and the third Heusler phase. Variations of this alloy, gained by replacing 0.5 or 1 at. pct Al by the equivalent amount of Mo, W, Zr, Hf or B, can show more phases in addition to this three-phase morphology. When the homogenization temperature is chosen too high, a eutectic phase formation can take place at the grain boundaries, depending on the trace elements: Mo and W do not form eutectics while Hf, Zr and B do. In order to avoid the eutectic formation and the potential implied grain boundary weakening, the homogenization temperature must be chosen carefully by differential scanning calorimetry measurements. A too low homogenization temperature, however, could impede the misorientation alignment of the dendrites in the grain. The influence of grain boundary phases and incomplete dendrite re-orientation are compared and discussed.

This is the pre-peer review data setfor the manuscript "Size Effects of the Anions in the Ionothermal Synthesis of Carbon Nitride Materials". Semiconducting carbon nitride polymers are used in metal-free photocatalysts and in opto-electronic devices. Conventionally, they are obtained using thermal and ionothermal syntheses in inscrutable, closed systems and therefore, their condensation behavior is poorly understood. Here, we compare the synthetic protocols and properties of two types of carbon nitride materials – 2D layered poly(triazine imide) (PTI) and hydrogen-bonded melem hydrate – obtained from three low-melting salt eutectics taken from the systematic series of the alkali metal halides: LiCl/KCl, LiBr/KBr, and LiI/KI. The size of the anion plays a significant role in the formation process of the condensed carbon nitride polymers, and it suggests a strong templating effect. The smaller anions (chloride and bromide) become incorporated into triazine (C3N3)-based PTI frameworks. The larger iodide does not stabilize the formation of a triazine-based polymer, but instead it leads to the formation of the heptazine (C6N7)-based hydrogen-bonded melem hydrate as the main crystalline phase. We obtain melem hydrate as single-crystalline powders and compare it with PTI in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water and in an OLED device. Further, we rationalize the emergence of each carbon nitride species from its corresponding salt eutectic via density functional theory calculations. This study highlights the possibilities to further tailor the properties of eutectic salt melts for ionothermal synthesis of organic functional materials.

The oxygen redox reaction in lithium-rich layered oxide battery cathode materials generates extra capacity at high cell voltages (i.e., >4.5 V). However, the irreversible oxygen release causes transition metal (TM) dissolution, migration and cell voltage decay. To circumvent these issues, we introduce a strategy for tuning the Coulombic interactions in a model Li-rich positive electrode active material, i.e., Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2. In particular, we tune the Coulombic repulsive interactions to obtain an adaptable crystal structure that enables the reversible distortion of TMO6 octahedron and mitigates TM dissolution and migration. Moreover, this strategy hinders the irreversible release of oxygen and other parasitic reactions (e.g., electrolyte decomposition) commonly occurring at high voltages. When tested in non-aqueous coin cell configuration, the modified Li-rich cathode material, combined with a Li metal anode, enables a stable cell discharge capacity of about 240 mAh g−1 for 120 cycles at 50 mA g−1 and a slower voltage decay compared to the unmodified Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2.

For understanding magnonic materials the fundamental characterization of their frequency response is essential. However, determining full dispersion relations and real space wavelength measurements are challenging and time-consuming tasks. We present an approach for spin wave excitation by a modified Sinc pulse, which combines a cosine signal with a conventional Sinc function. The resulting adjustable frequency bands lead to a broadband spin wave excitation at uniform power levels. Subsequently, time resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy is used for direct imaging of all excited spin waves in real space. To demonstrate the capabilities of this approach, a modified Sinc excitation of an ultra-thin yttrium-iron-garnet film is shown that simultaneously reveals phase, amplitude, and k-space information from a single measurement. Consequently, this approach allows a fast and thorough access to the full dispersion relation including spatial maps of the individual spin wave modes, enabling complete characterization of magnonic materials down to the nanoscale in real and reciprocal space.

In this work, the stress gradient in mechanically polished tungsten sample was studied using X-ray diffraction methods. To determine in-depth stress evolution in the very shallow subsurface region (up to 10 μm), special methods based on reflection geometry were applied. The subsurface stresses (depth up to 1 μm) were measured using the multiple-reflection grazing incidence X-ray diffraction method with classical characteristic X-rays, while the deeper volumes (depth up to 10 μm) were investigated using energy-dispersive diffraction with white high energy synchrotron beam. Both complementary methods allowed for determining in-depth stress profile and the evolution of stress-free lattice parameter. It was confirmed that the crystals of tungsten are elastically isotropic, which simplifies the stress analysis and makes tungsten a suitable material for testing stress measurement methods. Furthermore, it was found that an important compressive stress of about − 1000 MPa was generated on the surface of the mechanically polished sample, and this stress decreases to zero value at the depth of about 9 μm. On the other hand, the strain-free lattice parameter does not change significantly in the examined subsurface region.

The dynamic processing of aerosols in the atmosphere is difficult to mimic under laboratory conditions, particularly on a single-particle level with high spatial and chemical resolution. Our new microreactor system for X-ray microscopy facilitates observations under in situ conditions and extends the accessible parameter ranges of existing setups to very high humidities and low temperatures. With the parameter margins for pressure (180–1000 hPa), temperature (∼250 K to room temperature), and relative humidity (∼0 % to above 98 %), a wide range of tropospheric conditions is covered. Unique features are the mobile design and compact size that make the instrument applicable to different synchrotron facilities. Successful first experiments were conducted at two X-ray microscopes, MAXYMUS, located at beamline UE46 of the synchrotron BESSY II, and PolLux, located at beamline X07DA of the Swiss Light Source in the Paul Scherrer Institute. Here we present the design and analytical scope of the system, along with first results from hydration–dehydration experiments on ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate particles and the tentative observation of water ice at low temperature and high relative humidity in a secondary organic aerosol particle from isoprene oxidation.

The spin dynamics of {Cr8Y8}, a rare example of ferromagnetic molecular rings, has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and heat capacity (HC) methods. Clear evidence of low-lying magnetic excitation has been found. Magnetic Schottky anomalies are observed in low-temperature (low-T) HC curves measured under various fields and can be well fitted with a multi-level Schottky term, giving important information on the energy gaps between spin levels. The INS results obtained on TOFTOF and NEAT time-of-flight spectrometers show INS peaks corresponding to the transitions within S = 12 ground states and between the S = 12 ground state and the S = 11 excited state. The single-J model with a unique exchange constant J = 0.151 meV can well reproduce the low-lying energy levels and their Zeeman splitting upon applied magnetic fields. This work shows that the single-J model can be a good approach for the low-T spin dynamics of {Cr8Y8} and may have general significance for other weak ferromagnetic molecular rings. Determination of the Cr3+-Cr3+ exchange constant in {Cr8Y8} will benefit the study on the complicated magnetic interactions in chromium lanthanide complexes. The zero-field splitting which is suggested by HC data still calls for EPR or high-resolution INS technique to verify.

Non-symmorphic chiral topological crystals host exotic multifold fermions, and their associated Fermi arcs helically wrap around and expand throughout the Brillouin zone between the high-symmetry center and surface-corner momenta. However, Fermi-arc splitting and realization of the theoretically proposed maximal Chern number rely heavily on the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. In the present work, we investigate the topological states of a new chiral crystal, PtGa, which has the strongest SOC among all chiral crystals reported to date. With a comprehensive investigation using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, quantum-oscillation measurements, and state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, we report a giant SOC-induced splitting of both Fermi arcs and bulk states. Consequently, this study experimentally confirms the realization of a maximal Chern number equal to |4| for the first time in multifold fermionic systems, thereby providing a platform to observe large-quantized photogalvanic currents in optical experiments., Accepted in Nature Communications

This study is dedicated to link the nanoscale pore space of carbon materials, prepared by hard-templating of meso-macroporous SiO2 monoliths, to the corresponding nanoscale polyaromatic microstructure using two different carbon precursors wthat generally exhibit markedly different carbonization properties, i.e., a graphitizable pitch and a non-graphitizable resin. The micro- and mesoporosity of these monolithic carbon materials was studied by the sorption behavior of a relatively large organic molecule (p-xylene) in comparison to typical gas adsorbates (Ar). In addition, to obtain a detailed view on the nanopore space small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) combined with in situ physisorption was applied, using deuterated p-xylene (DPX) as a contrast-matching agent in the neutron scattering process. The impact of the carbon precursor on the structural order on an atomic scale in terms of size and disorder of the carbon microstructure, on the nanopore structure, and on the template process is analyzed by special evaluation approaches for SANS and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The WAXS analysis shows that the pitch-based monolithic material exhibits a more ordered microstructure consisting of larger graphene stacks and similar graphene layer sizes compared to the monolithic resin. Another major finding is the discrepancy in the accessible micro/mesoporosity between Ar and deuterated p-xylene that found for the two different carbon precursors, pitch and resin, which can be regarded as representative carbon precursors in general. These differences essentially indicate that physisorption using probe gases such as Ar or N2 can provide misleading parameters if to be used to appraise the accessibility of the nanoscale pore space.

Site-selective dissociation induced by core photoexcitation of biomolecules is of key importance for the understanding of radiation damage processes and dynamics and for its promising use as “chemical scissors” in various applications. However, identifying products of site-selective dissociation in large molecules is challenging at the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen edges because of the high recurrence of these atoms and related chemical groups. In this paper, we present the observation of site-selective dissociation at the sulfur L-edge in the gas-phase peptide methionine enkephalin, which contains only a single sulfur atom. Near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry has revealed that the resonant $S 2p → σ*_{C–S}$ excitation of the sulfur contained in the methionine side chain leads to site-selective dissociation, which is not the case after core ionization above the sulfur L-edge. The prospects of such results for the study of charge dynamics in biomolecular systems are discussed.

We have investigated the radical functionalization of gold surfaces with a derivative of the perchlorotriphenylmethyl (PTM) radical using two methods: by chemisorption from the radical solution and by on-surface chemical derivation from a precursor. We have investigated the obtained self-assembled monolayers by photon-energy dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our results show that the molecules were successfully anchored on the surfaces. We have used a robust method that can be applied to a variety of materials to assess the stability of the functionalized interface. The monolayers are characterized by air and X-ray beam stability unprecedented for films of organic radicals. Over very long X-ray beam exposure we observed a dynamic nature of the radical–Au complex. Charge transfer dynamics are of importance in functional materials used in devices ranging from transistors to photovoltaics. The understanding of charge transfer in particular of how fast electrons tunnel away from an excited state and where they end up, is necessary to tailor materials used in devices. We have investigated charge transfer dynamics in different forms of the layered two-dimensional material molybdenum disulphide (MoS2, in single crystal, nanocrystalline particles and crystallites in a reduced graphene oxide network) using core-hole clock spectroscopy. By recording the electrons in the sulphur KLL Auger electron kinetic energy range we have measured the prevalence of localised and delocalised decays from a state created by core excitation using X-rays. We show that breaking the crystal symmetry of the single crystal into either particles or sheets causes the charge transfer from the excited state to occur faster, even more so when incorporating it in a graphene oxide network. The interface between the MoS2 and the reduced graphene oxide forms a Schottky barrier which changes the ratio between local and delocalised decays creating two distinct regions in the charge transfer dependent on the energy of the excited electron. Thereby we show that ultra-fast charge transfer in MoS2 can be tailored, a result which can be used in the design of emergent devices.

Understanding the formation of the intracellular protein corona of nanoparticles is essential for a wide range of bio- and nanomedical applications. The innermost layer of the protein corona, the hard corona, directly interacts with the nanoparticle surface, and by shielding the surface, it has a deterministic effect on the intracellular processing of the nanoparticle. Here, we combine a direct qualitative analysis of the hard corona composition of gold nanoparticles with a detailed structural characterization of the molecules in their interaction with the nanoparticle surface and relate both to the effects they have on the ultrastructure of living cells and the processing of the gold nanoparticles. Cells from the cell lines HCT-116 and A549 were incubated with 30 nm citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles and with their aggregates in different culture media. The combined results of mass spectrometry based proteomics, cryo soft X-ray nanotomography and surface-enhanced Raman scattering experiments together revealed different uptake mechanisms in the two cell lines and distinct levels of induced cellular stress when incubation conditions were varied. The data indicate that the different incubation conditions lead to changes in the nanoparticle processing via different protein-nanoparticle interfacial interactions. Specifically, they suggest that the protein-nanoparticle surface interactions depend mainly on the surface properties of the gold nanoparticles, that is, the ζ-potential and the resulting changes in the hydrophilicity of the nanoparticle surface, and are largely independent of the cell line, the uptake mechanism and intracellular processing, or the extent of the induced cellular stress.

At present, small angle X ray scattering SAXS studies of perfluorinated sulfonic acid ionomers PFSAs are unable to fully determine the true shape of their building blocks, as recent SAXS modelling predicts disk and rod like nanoionic domains as being equally possible. This scenario requires evidence based findings to unravel the real shape of PFSA building blocks. Herein, a SAXS pattern signature for a lamellar nanophase separation of the ionic domains of Nafion is presented, backed by mid and far infrared spectroscopy MIR and FIR and wide angle X ray scattering WAXS data of Nafion in different ionic forms, a broad range of ionic phase contents EW amp; 8764; 859 42 amp; 8198;252 g eq amp; 8722;1 and temperatures. The study indicates that the lamellar arrangement of the ionic domains is the most representative morphology that accounts for the physical properties of this ionomer. The lamellar SAXS reflections of Nafion are enhanced in electric and magnetic field aligned membranes, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy AFM . Electric and magnetic field assisted casting of Nafion allowed producing nanostructured and anisotropic films with the lamellas stacked perpendicularly to the field vector, which is the direction of interest for several applications. Such nanostructured Nafion membranes are bestowed with advanced optical and proton transport properties, making them promising materials for solar and fuel cells

Magnetotactic bacteria Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense synthesize cubo-octahedral shaped magnetite nanoparticles, called magnetosomes, with a mean diameter of 40 nm. The high quality of the biosynthesized nanoparticles makes them suitable for numerous applications in fields like cancer therapy, among others. The magnetic properties of magnetite magnetosomes can be tailored by doping them with transition metal elements, increasing their potential applications. In this work, we address the effect of Mn doping on the main properties of magnetosomes by the combination of structural and magnetic characterization techniques. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray absorption nearedge structure, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism results reveal a Mn dopant percentage of utmost 2.3%, where Mn cations are incorporated as a combination of Mn2+ and Mn3+, preferably occupying tetrahedral and octahedral sites, respectively. Fe substitution by Mn notably alters the magnetic behavior of the doped magnetosomes. Theoretical modeling of the experimental hysteresis loops taken between 5 and 300 K with a modified Stoner-Wohlfarth approach highlights the different anisotropy contributions of the doped magnetosomes as a function of temperature. In comparison with the undoped magnetosomes, Mn incorporation alters the magnetocrystalline anisotropy introducing a negative and larger cubic anisotropy down to the Verwey transition, which appears shifted to lower temperature values as a consequence of Mn doping. On the other hand, Mn-doped magnetosomes show a decrease in the uniaxial anisotropy in the whole temperature range, most likely associated with a morphological modification of the Mn-doped magnetosomes. The phenomenon of single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior of mixed valent Mn 12 coordination clusters of general formula [Mn III 8Mn IV 4O 12(RCOO) 16(H 2O) 4] had been exemplified by bulk samples of the archetypal [Mn III 8Mn IV 4O 12(CH 3COO) 16(H 2O) 4] (4) molecule, and the molecular origin of the observed magnetic behavior has found support from extensive studies on the Mn 12 system within crystalline material or on molecules attached to a variety of surfaces. Here we report the magnetic signature of the isolated cationic species [Mn 12O 12(CH 3COO) 15(CH 3CN)] + (1) by gas phase X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy, and we find it closely resembling that of the corresponding bulk samples. Furthermore, we report broken symmetry DFT calculations of spin densities and single ion tensors of the isolated, optimized complexes [Mn 12O 12(CH 3COO) 15(CH 3CN)] + (1), [Mn 12O 12(CH 3COO) 16] (2), [Mn 12O 12(CH 3COO) 16(H 2O) 4] (3), and the complex in bulk geometry [Mn III 8Mn IV 4O 12(CH 3COO) 16(H 2O) 4] (5). The found magnetic fingerprints – experiment and theory alike – are of a remarkable robustness: The Mn IV 4 core bears almost no magnetic anisotropy while the surrounding Mn III 8 ring is highly anisotropic. These signatures are truly intrinsic properties of the Mn 12 core scaffold within all of these complexes and largely void of the environment. This likely holds irrespective of bulk packing effects.

Ion yield NEXAFS were performed in the gas phase using electrospray ionization (ESI) in combination with an ion trap. The interpretation of the sulfur L-edge NEXAFS spectrum is supported by Restricted Open-Shell Configuration Interaction (ROCIS) calculations. The fragmentation pathway of triply charged cystine ions was modeled by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. We have deduced a possible pathway of fragmentation upon excitation and ionization of S 2p electrons. The disulfide bridge breaks for resonant excitation at lower photon energies but remains intact upon higher energy resonant excitation and upon ionization of S 2p. Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become incorporated into a collective electronic state. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) on CePd3 to clarify the fate of all relevant energy scales. We find that even spin-orbit excited states acquire pronounced momentum-dependence at low temperature—the telltale sign of hybridization with the underlying metallic state. Our results demonstrate how localized electronic degrees of freedom endow correlated metals with new properties, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of superconducting, electronic nematic, and topological states.

In recent years, low-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells have become an increasingly important pillar in a zero-carbon strategy for curbing climate change, with their potential to power multiscale stationary and mobile applications. The performance improvement is a particular focus of research and engineering roadmaps, with water management being one of the major areas of interest for development. Appropriate characterisation tools for mapping the evolution, motion and removal of water are of high importance to tackle shortcomings. This article demonstrates the development of a 4D high-speed neutron imaging technique, which enables a quantitative analysis of the local water evolution. 4D visualisation allows the time-resolved studies of droplet formation in the flow fields and water quantification in various cell parts. Performance parameters for water management are identified that offer a method of cell classification, which will, in turn, support computer modelling and the engineering of next-generation flow field designs.

We have measured angular dependent fluorescence yield x ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra on single crystals of the heterometallic 3d amp; 8722;4f 12 metallacrown 4 TbMn4 and DyMn4 complexes. Simulated spectra using crystal field multiplet calculations reproduce the experimentally observed spectra. The orientation of the molecules causes linear dichroism spectra of the 4f absorption spectra. This natural linear dichroism shows the anisotropic charge distribution of the rare earth 4f state in the tetragonal crystal field despite the small 4f crystal field splitting. The magnetic moment of the molecule is dominated by the rare earth moment revealing a considerably large contribution of orbital moment. From a sum rule analysis of experimental and simulated x ray magnetic circular dichroism, we determined corrected spin and orbital Dy moments at low temperature 14 K within a magnetic field of 7 T. We find a significant angular dependence of the Dy magnetic moments, indicating the presence of fourth order magnetic anisotropy

A facile and efficient methodology is described for the solvothermal synthesis of size tunable, stable, and uniform NiCu core shell nanoparticles NPs for application in catalysis. The diameter of the NPs is tuned in a range from 6 nm to 30 nm and to adjust the Ni Cu ratio from 30 1 to 1 1. Furthermore, the influence of different reaction parameters on the final NPs is studied. The NPs are structurally characterized by a method combination of transmission electron microscopy, anomalous small angle X ray scattering, X ray absorption fine structure, and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Using these analytical methods, it is possible to elucidate a core shell shell structure of all particles and their chemical composition. In all cases, a depletion from the core to the shell is observed, with the core consisting of NiCu alloy, surrounded by an inner Ni rich shell and an outer NiO shell. The SiO2 supported NiCu core shell NPs show pronounced selectivity of gt;99 for CO in the catalytic reduction of CO2 to CO using hydrogen as reactant reverse water gas shift reaction independent of size and Ni Cu ratio.

Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy with lateral resolution from the submillimeter to submicrometer range, we investigate the homogeneity, the chemical composition, and the nickel 3d- oxygen 2p charge transfer in topotactically reduced epitaxial PrNiO2+δ thin films. To this end, we use x-ray absorption spectroscopy in a standard experimental setup and in a soft x-ray microscope to probe the element and spatially resolved electronic structure modifications through changes of the nickel-2p and oxygen-1s absorption spectrum upon soft-chemistry reduction. We find that the reduction process is laterally homogeneous across a partially reduced PrNiO2+δ thin film sample for length scales down to 50 nm.

Magnetic droplets are non-topological magnetodynamical solitons displaying a wide range of complex dynamic phenomena with potential for microwave signal generation. Bubbles, on the other hand, are internally static cylindrical magnetic domains, stabilized by external fields and magnetostatic interactions. In its original theory, the droplet was described as an imminently collapsing bubble stabilized by spin transfer torque and, in its zero-frequency limit, as equivalent to a bubble. Without nanoscale lateral confinement, pinning, or an external applied field, such a nanobubble is unstable, and should collapse. Here, we show that we can freeze dynamic droplets into static nanobubbles by decreasing the magnetic field. While the bubble has virtually the same resistance as the droplet, all signs of low-frequency microwave noise disappear. The transition is fully reversible and the bubble can be thawed back into a droplet if the magnetic field is increased under current. Whereas the droplet collapses without a sustaining current, the bubble is highly stable and remains intact for days without external drive. Electrical measurements are complemented by direct observation using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, which corroborates the analysis and confirms that the bubble is stabilized by pinning., 23 pages, 5 figures

This work reports on low temperature inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite nanostructures synthesized as the active black phase, without the additional use of organic ligands and based only on CsI and PbI2 precursors. This new method is based on the inverse temperature crystallization ITC phenomenon where dissolved lead salts tend to form nucleation grains at high temperatures. This methodology allows the conversion temperature of the CsPbI3 black phase to be reduced without the use of additives or anti solvent treatment. We use small angle X ray scattering SAXS , high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy HAADF STEM , and photoluminescence PL measurements to characterize the precursor solutions at different heating times to understand the nature of the observed CsPbI3 nanoparticles NPs . Heating the solution for 192 hours shows the high quality black active phase of CsPbI3 NPs after evaporation of the solvent in the solid state. This allows us to form a film of CsPbI3 in its photoactive phase at a low temperature T 55 1C within a few minutes using no additives or antisolvent treatment. We use the dispersion of CsPbI3 nanostructures to fabricate black phase CsPbI3 perovskite based solar cells on a mesoporous TiO2 structure showing a power conversion efficiency of 7.3

Efficient focusing of X rays is essential for high resolution X ray microscopy. Diffractive X ray optics called kinoforms offer the highest focusing efficiencies in theory. However, they have long remained unavailable due to their challenging nanofabrication. Recently, various X ray optic geometries including kinoforms have been realized using 3D laser lithography at near infrared wavelengths. As the smallest features period of the kinoform determines the resolving power, there is a natural drive to find ways to fabricate kinoforms with ever smaller features. Here, a custom built 3D laser lithography setup with an excitation wavelength of 405 nm is used, which allows to half the smallest period of the kinoforms compared to previous work. A 40 improvement in scanning transmission X ray microscopy image resolution, that is, a cutoff resolution of 145 nm, and an efficiency of 7.6 at 700 eV is achieved. A reconstructed pixel size of 18.5 nm, reaching the limit imposed by the design of the microscopy set up, is demonstrated through ptychographic imaging of a magnetic sample which has a strongly reduced contrast mechanism. Moreover, X ray lenses manufactured by 405 nm 3D laser lithography have the potential to become much less expensive than X ray lenses made by other means

Energy technology 11(5), 2200784 (2022). doi:10.1002/ente.202200784, It is well known that the spatial distribution of the carbon-binder domain (CBD) offers a large potential to further optimize lithium-ion batteries. However, it is challenging to reconstruct the CBD from tomographic image data obtained by synchrotron tomography. Herein, several approaches are considered to segment 3D image data of two different cathodes into three phases, namely, active material, CBD, and pores. More precisely, it is focused on global thresholding, a local closing approach based on energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data, a k-means clustering method, and a procedure based on a neural network that has been trained by correlative microscopy, i.e., based on data gained by synchrotron tomography and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy data representing the same electrode. The impact of the considered segmentation approaches on morphological characteristics as well as on the resulting performance by spatially resolved transport simulations is quantified. Furthermore, experimentally determined electrochemical properties are used to identify an appropriate range for the effective transport parameter of the CBD. The developed methodology is applied to two differently manufactured cathodes, namely, an ultrathick unstructured cathode and a two-layer cathode with varying CBD content in both layers. Deuterium has been recognized as an irreplaceable element in industrial and scientific research. However, hydrogen isotope separation still remains a huge challenge due to the identical physicochemical properties of the isotopes. In this paper, a partially fluorinated metal–organic framework (MOF) with copper, a so-called FMOFCu, was investigated to determine the separation efficiency and capacity of the framework for deuterium extraction from a hydrogen isotope mixture. The unique structure of this porous material consists of a trimodal pore system with large tubular cavities connected through a smaller cavity with bottleneck apertures with a size of 3.6 Å plus a third hidden cavity connected by an even smaller aperture of 2.5 Å. Depending on the temperature, these two apertures show a gate-opening effect and the cavities get successively accessible for hydrogen with increasing temperature. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) measurements indicate that the locally flexible MOF can separate D2 from anisotope mixture efficiently, with a selectivity of 14 at 25 K and 4 at 77 K.

High frequency responsive capacitors with lightweight, flexibility, and miniaturization are among the most vital circuit components because they can be readily incorporated into various portable devices to smooth out the ripples for circuits. Electrode materials no doubt are at the heart of such devices. Despite tremendous efforts and recent advances, the development of flexible and scalable high frequency responsive capacitor electrodes with superior performance remains a great challenge. Herein, a straightforward and technologically relevant method is reported to manufacture a carbon fabric membrane glued by nitrogen doped nanoporous carbons produced through a polyelectrolyte complexation induced phase separation strategy. The as obtained flexible carbon fabric bearing a unique hierarchical porous structure, and high conductivity as well as robust mechanical properties, serves as the free standing electrode materials of electrochemical capacitors. It delivers an ultrahigh specific areal capacitance of 2632 F cm amp; 8722;2 at 120 Hz with an excellent alternating current line filtering performance, fairly higher than the state of the art commercial ones. Together, this system offers the potential electrode material to be scaled up for AC line filtering capacitors at industrial levels

The spontaneous formation of chiral structures offers a variety of liquid crystals LC phases that could be further tailored for practical applications. In our work, the characteristic features of spiral ordering in the cholesteric phase of EZL10 10 LC were evaluated. To disclose resonant reflections related to a nanoscale helix pitch, resonant soft X ray scattering at the carbon K edge was employed. The angular positions of the observed element specific scattering peaks reveal a half pitch of the spiral ordering p 2 amp; 8776; 52 nm indicating the full pitch of about 104 nm at room temperature. The broadening of the peaks points to a presence of coherently scattering finite size domains formed by cholesteric spirals with lengths of about five pitches. No scattering peaks were detectable in the EZL10 10 isotropic phase at higher temperatures. The characteristic lengths extracted from the resonant soft X ray scattering experiment agree well with the periodicity of the surface fingerprint pattern observed in the EZL10 10 cholesteric phase by means of atomic force microscopy. The stability of LC molecules under the incident beam was proven by X ray absorption spectroscopy in transmission geometry

In digital neutron imaging, the neutron scintillator screen is a limiting factor of spatial resolution and neutron capture efficiency and must be improved to enhance the capabilities of digital neutron imaging systems. Commonly used neutron scintillators are based on 6LiF and gadolinium oxysulfide neutron converters. This work explores boron-based neutron scintillators because 10B has a neutron absorption cross-section four times greater than 6Li, less energetic daughter products than Gd and 6Li, and lower γ-ray sensitivity than Gd. These factors all suggest that, although borated neutron scintillators may not produce as much light as 6Li-based screens, they may offer improved neutron statistics and spatial resolution. This work conducts a parametric study to determine the effects of various boron neutron converters, scintillator and converter particle sizes, converter-to-scintillator mix ratio, substrate materials, and sensor construction on image quality. The best performing boron-based scintillator screens demonstrated an improvement in neutron detection efficiency when compared with a common 6LiF/ZnS scintillator, with a 125% increase in thermal neutron detection efficiency and 67% increase in epithermal neutron detection efficiency. The spatial resolution of high-resolution borated scintillators was measured, and the neutron tomography of a test object was successfully performed using some of the boron-based screens that exhibited the highest spatial resolution. For some applications, boron-based scintillators can be utilized to increase the performance of a digital neutron imaging system by reducing acquisition times and improving neutron statistics.
