The morphology and phase state are critical physical properties of aerosol particles. However, studies related to the analysis of these properties primarily focus on laboratory experiments, and studies on real aerosol particles are limited. Herein, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) filter samples were obtained to investigate and compare the morphology and phase state of ambient aerosol particles in South Korea. The PM2.5 samples were collected in the summer of June 2021 from two different environments: Seoul (urban) and Seosan (coastal-rural). Optical microscopy was combined with the poke-and-flow technique to determine the morphology and phase state of the PM2.5 as a function of relative humidity (RH) at 293 ± 1 K. At both sites, the PM2.5 droplets, which were extracted in purified water, showed a multiphase nature that was dependent on the RH and chemical composition. Based on the results and ambient average RH in Seoul, most of the PM2.5 was observed in a liquid state on polluted days under an inorganic-dominant condition, but in a semisolid state on clean days under an organic carbon-rich condition. In Seosan, the PM2.5 predominantly existed in a liquid state, due to the high RH caused by proximity to the Yellow Sea. Our study provides fundamental physical properties of PM2.5 for both urban and coastal-rural environments. The results have strong applications for atmospheric chemistry and predicting particle size distributions.

Aerosol water uptake and the related influence on its optical properties owing to the hygroscopic growth of polydisperse aerosols have a significant effect on air quality and climate. This study develops an analytical parameterization for a single hygroscopic optical parameter and the scattering enhancement factor for polydisperse aerosol sizes. Polydisperse lognormal size distributions for geometric mean diameters of 0.05–1 µm and geometric standard deviations of 1.3–2.5 are considered with real refractive indices between 1.35 and 1.6. The analytical expression obtained for the optical parameter is compared to Mie theory and reasonable agreements within the size range investigated in this study are observed. Further, our results show that the analytical expression could express polydispersed aerosol optical properties as a function of geometric mean diameter and geometric standard deviation of a lognormal distribution and the refractive index. The obtained analytical expression can be efficiently used for 3D models with a reduced computational burden. Copyright © 2023 American Association for Aerosol Research

Application of a drone-based, high-volume (38 L min−1) sampling system developed for time-resolved monitoring of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) is demonstrated in this study. Filter samples collected by the samplers were analyzed by a laboratory-based, thermal-optical transmittance (TOT) method of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health using a Sunset Laboratory OC-EC analyzer. The EC, OC, and total carbon (TC) results for filter samples collected by the high-volume (38 L min−1) sampler are compared to those obtained by a low-volume (4 L min−1) sampler at ground level. Prior to the use of the developed high-volume sampler at 150 m, three 30-min air samples, taken from 11:00 to 15:00, and three 1-h samples, taken between 15:00 and 22:00, were collected at ground level by the drone-based system. For reference, the low-volume filter sample was collected over the 12-h period on the same day. In addition, particulate matter and black carbon concentrations were obtained as supportive data. In the ground-level test, the average EC, OC, and TC concentrations determined with the high-volume (drone) samples agree well with those determined with the 12-h, integrated, low-volume sample. Further field samplings on the ground and at 150-m were conducted over 2 days to assess the developed drone-based sampling system for measurement of carbonaceous aerosols.
