We present a compact overview of machine learning applications in financial accounting and audit research as well as management accounting research. Here, the application of machine learning has the potential to provide novel insights into empirical data and to improve predictive performance. We highlight the potential use of deep learning to process unstructured and structured data more efficiently and a greater focus on model interpretability as viable opportunities for future research. 0014

The memoirs of Mordekhay Bachayev (1911-2007), Bukharan Jewish intellectual and poet, are an important document for understanding the history, culture, and everyday life of Bukharan Jews in the first two decades of Soviet rule in Central Asia. Nevertheless, thus far they have been widely excluded from the post-Soviet efforts of the Bukharan Jewish communities in Israel and the United States to create unifying nationalist historiography. This paper argues that this omission relates to Bachayev openness about interpersonal antagonisms and denunciations within the Bukharan Jewish intellectual circles of 1930s Soviet Uzbekistan. The publications of the memoirs in 1988/89 caused fierce debate among Bukharan Jews about the role and personal guilt of Bukharan Jewish intellectuals during the time of the Great Terror, and transported the internal group tensions and interpersonal differences of the Soviet past into the present., Asien, Nr. 129 (2013): ASIEN (Oktober)

Obwohl die Vielfalt an Medikamenten zur Behandlung der Osteoporose zunimmt, gibt es weiterhin Bedarf die Therapie osteoporotischer Frakturen zu verbessern. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), welcher bisher vor allem durch seine Funktion als Neurotrophin in der Förderung des Nervensystems bekannt ist, spielt nach neueren Erkenntnissen zusätzlich eine Rolle im Prozess der Frakturheilung. Bei exogener Zugabe fördert BDNF die Frakturheilung gesunden Knochens im Mausmodell nach einer Osteotomie (Kauschke et al. 2018B). Um Wirkstoffe direkt am Ort der Frakturheilung freizusetzen, gibt es die Möglichkeit diese über Polyelektrolytkomplex-Nanopartikel (PEK-NP) an Knochenersatzmaterialien zu binden. Diese Studie wurde zur Erforschung des Einflusses von BDNF und PEK-NP auf Osteozyten durchgeführt. Spinalganglien (DRG) wurden hierbei als endogene BDNF-Quelle eingesetzt. Als Osteozytenmodell diente die murine Zelllinie murine long bone osteocytes-Y4 (MLOY4), die als Monokultur und als Kokultur mit aus Mäusen isolierten DRG-Neuronen untersucht wurde. Die Kulturen wurden lichtmikroskopisch unter Zugabe von BDNF (40 ng/mL), PEK-NP und PEK-NP+BDNF im Vergleich zur unbehandelten Kontrolle beobachtet. Die Proliferationsrate der MLO-Y4 wurde mittels eines BrdU Proliferationsassays nach 8, 24 und 32 Stunden (h) gemessen. Die Genexpressionanalyse in MLO-Y4 wurde anhand einer real-time Reverse Transkriptase Polymerase Kettenreaktion (real-time RT-PCR) durchgeführt und teilweise durch eine Kapillargelelektrophorese ergänzt. Im Proliferationsversuch ließ sich nach 24 h Inkubationszeit ein hoch signifikant positiver Einfluss von BDNF (40 ng/mL) auf die Proliferationsrate von MLO-Y4 sowohl in Monokultur als auch in der Kokultur mit DRG-Neuronen nachweisen. Im Gegensatz hierzu zeigten weder BDNF funktionalisierte PEK-NP, pure PEK-NP noch die Kokultivierung mit DRG einen signifikanten Effekt auf die Proliferation von MLO-Y4. In der Genexpressionsanalyse mittels real-time RT-PCR ließ sich nach 24 h Inkubationszeit von BDNF (40 ng/mL) für receptor activator of nuclear-factor κ B ligand (RANKL) und Osteoprotegerin (OPG) kein signifikanter Unterschied zur Kontrolle detektieren. Dieses Ergebnis zeigt, dass BDNF den Knochenstoffwechsel nicht über eine Induktion oder Inhibition dieser Schlüsselproteine im Knochenstoffwechsel beeinflusst. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Expression von BDNF sowie der korrespondierenden Rezeptoren von BDNF, Tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) und p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) zum ersten Mal in MLO-Y4 und teilweise überhaupt in Osteozyten nachgewiesen. Eine Expression von TrkB konnte in einer Arbeit bereits in primären Osteozyten gezeigt werden (Ida- Yonemochi et al. 2017). Des Weiteren konnte eine Expression des Apoptoseregulators SOST in den MLO-Y4 nicht nachgewiesen werden. Der positive Einfluss von BDNF auf die Proliferation und die Zytokompatibilität der PEKNP in MLO-Y4-Zellkulturen zeigt unter Berücksichtigung vorheriger Arbeiten die Möglichkeit eines Einsatzes von BDNF und PEK-NP zur Beschichtung von Knochenersatzmaterialien, um die Knochenheilung zu stimulieren.

Private firm financing, given the far-reaching importance of non-publicly traded companies for global output and employment, is still a relatively underexplored area. Since the seminal work of Petersen and Rajan (1994), only a small branch of research into private firms' cost of debt has been established. We aggregate the full body of this research that has empirically investigated antecedents of private firms' cost of debt in a meta-analysis. The foremost antecedents can be categorized into either borrower, creditor or financial statement verification attributes. Our results reveal a set of 11 highly significant and robust determinants.

Als Reaktion auf den Wirecard-Skandal haben Bundesfinanzminister Scholz und Bundesjustizministerin Lambrecht am 7.10.2020 einen Aktionsplan der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Neben der Stärkung der BaFin als Enforcement-Stelle werden weitreichende Regulierungen in Aussicht gestellt, welche den Berufsstand der Wirtschaftsprüfer betreffen. Allerdings sollen auch Vorstände und Aufsichtsrat in den Fokus der Reform rücken. Aus diesem aktuellen Hintergrund geben Prof. Dr. Thomas Loy und Prof. Dr. Patrick Velte in diesem Interview ihre Einschätzung zu den geplanten Reformmaßnahmen ab.

It is now for a second time that we can invite researchers to come to Giessen for an international exchange of the latest research and a discussion of ideas. This year again, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) is sponsoring the event. The main topic for 2019 is 'Vibration in antibacterial and oncological therapy'. Many effects of mechanical vibration on tissue have been discovered so far. Clinical applications relying on vibration exist for a variety of conditions. The intracellular processes, however, are still largely not understood. And reproducibility remains a matter of potential for improvement. DFG funds for the 3rd conference in 2020 have already been approved for a focus on multifunctional trauma surgery implants.

This unpublished report is a technical summary of results of testing organic residues and the leather coat of Otzi the Alpine Iceman using samples taken in Bolzano, Italy at the Sudtiroler Archaeologiemuseum June 29 to July 4, 1993. The impetus to re-sample from the tools came as part of the production of a documentary about the Iceman for Discovery Channel (Brando Quilici Productions). Previous microscopic and biochemical analysis had revealed the presence of hemoglobin, mammalian immunoglobulins and some preserved red blood cells and a few identifiable nucleated cells (Loy 1994 manuscript report).

This unpublished report describes an examination of artifacts assoicated with the "Ice Man." Artefacts associated with the mummified remains of the "Ice Man" now familiarly known as Otzi, were examined in November 1993 at the Romisch-Germanischen Zenrtalmuseum (Romano-German Central Museum, RGZM) in Maniz, Germany. Optical microscopy and simple chemical screening were used to detect the presence of organic use-residues. Approximately 70 hours of microscopic examination were carried out in Mainz in late November 1993 and 720 photomicrograph exposes were made. These photographs were recorded as 74 submect groups which comprise 56 samples (including 7 hair samples from the skin clothing and three samples of potential surface contaminants) were removed and taken to Australia for further analysis. A screening test that detects hemoglobin was used to test residue extracts from locations selected during the microscopic examination. The results of this analysis confirmed the presence of blood, hairs, collagen and starches on the tools and provided samples for further detailed analyses. This report sets out the methods used, summarizes the results of microscopy and chemical screening.

As part of a longitudinal research study, families of children with leukemia were provided with a psychosocial intervention program over a two-year period. This paper describes the approaches used at specific times during the illness: diagnosis and initial treatment, early outpatient treatment, later outpatient treatment, remission, relapse, and death. the goals of the intervention strategies were to facilitate: an understanding of the realities of the illness; management of emotional distress; and utilization of resources to care for the child, attend to other responsibilities, and support and communicate with one another.

This dissertation consists of three essays on auditing and current regulatory changes in financial reporting. The first essay investigates empirically how audit firms’ compensation policies are associated with audit quality provided by individual auditors. The second and third essay illustrates, evaluates and analyzes current proposals for reforms from the US PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board) and from ESMA (European Securities and Market Authority). Die vorliegende Dissertation besteht aus drei Aufsätzen zu Wirtschaftsprüfung sowie zu aktuellen regulatorischen Änderungen bezüglich der Berichterstattung finanzieller Informationen. Der erste Aufsatz untersucht empirisch, wie Vergütungsstrukturen in Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaften mit der Prüfungsqualität individueller Wirtschaftsprüfer assoziiert ist. Der zweite und dritte Aufsatz stellt aktuelle Reformvorschläge der US-amerikanischen PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board) sowie der ESMA (European Securities and Market Authority) dar, bewertet und analysiert diese.
