We study the nature of the faint radio source population detected in the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) Early Science data in the COSMOS field, focusing on the properties of the radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Using the extensive multi-wavelength data available in the field, we are able to classify 88 per cent of the 5223 radio sources in the field with host galaxy identifications as AGN (35 per cent) or star-forming galaxies (54 per cent). We select a sample of radio-loud AGN with redshifts out to $z \sim 6$ and radio luminosities $10^{20} < \textrm{L}_{1.4~\textrm{GHz}} / \textrm{W Hz}^{-1} < 10^{27}$ and classify them as high-excitation and low-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs and LERGs). The classification catalogue is released with this work. We find no significant difference in the host galaxy properties of the HERGs and LERGs in our sample. In contrast to previous work, we find that the HERGs and LERGs have very similar Eddington-scaled accretion rates; in particular we identify a population of very slowly accreting AGN that are formally classified as HERGs at these low radio luminosities, where separating into HERGs and LERGs possibly becomes redundant. We investigate how black hole mass affects jet power, and find that a black hole mass $\gtrsim 10^{7.8}~\textrm{M}_\odot$ is required to power a jet with mechanical power greater than the radiative luminosity of the AGN ($L_\textrm{mech}/L_\textrm{bol} > 1$). We discuss that both a high black hole mass and black hole spin may be necessary to launch and sustain a dominant radio jet., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) observations of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA)-23h field. The survey was carried out at 887.5 MHz and covers a 83 square degree field. We imaged the calibrated visibility data, taken as part of the Evolutionary Mapping of Universe (EMU) Early Science Programme, using the latest version of the ASKAPSoft pipeline. The final mosaic has an angular resolution of 10 arcsec and a central rms noise of around 38 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. The derived radio source catalogue has 39812 entries above a peak flux density threshold of 5$\sigma$. We searched for the radio source host galaxy counterparts using the GAMA spectroscopic (with an i-band magnitude limit of 19.2 mag) and multi-wavelength catalogues that are available as part of the collaboration. We identified hosts with GAMA spectroscopic redshifts for 5934 radio sources. We describe the data reduction, imaging, and source identification process, and present the source counts. Thanks to the wide area covered by our survey, we obtain very robust counts down to 0.2 mJy. ASKAP's exceptional survey speed, providing efficient, sensitive and high resolution mapping of large regions of the sky in conjunction with the multi-wavelength data available for the GAMA23 field, allowed us to discover 63 giant radio galaxies. The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) has become a cornerstone of extragalactic astronomy. Since the last public catalog in 2015, a wealth of new imaging and spectroscopic data has been collected in the COSMOS field. This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of this new imaging data to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. Source detection and multi-wavelength photometry is performed for 1.7 million sources across the $2\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ of the COSMOS field, $\sim$966,000 of which are measured with all available broad-band data using both traditional aperture photometric methods and a new profile-fitting photometric extraction tool, The Farmer, which we have developed. A detailed comparison of the two resulting photometric catalogs is presented. Photometric redshifts are computed for all sources in each catalog utilizing two independent photometric redshift codes. Finally, a comparison is made between the performance of the photometric methodologies and of the redshift codes to demonstrate an exceptional degree of self-consistency in the resulting photometric redshifts. We examine the far-IR properties of a sample of 5391 optically selected QSOs in the 0.544.7, using SPIRE data from Herschel-ATLAS. We split the sample in a grid of 74 luminosity-redshift bins and compute the average optical-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) in each bin. By normalising an intrinsic AGN template to the AGN optical power (at 5100A) we decompose the total infrared emission (L_IR; 8-1000um) into an AGN (L_IR,AGN) and star-forming component (L_IR,SF). We find that the AGN contribution to L_IR increases as a function of AGN power which manifests as a reduction of the `far-IR bump' in the average QSO SEDs. We note that L_IR,SF does not correlate with AGN power; the mean star formation rates (SFRs) of AGN host galaxies are a function of redshift only and they range from ~6 Msun/yr at z~0 to a plateau of, Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The far-infrared radio correlation (FIRC) is one of the strongest correlations in astronomy, yet a model that explains this comprehensively does not exist. The new LOFAR all Sky Survey (LoTSS) deep field, ELAIS-N1, allows exploration of this relation in previously unexplored regions of parameter space of radio frequency (150 MHz), luminosity (L150 24.7), redshift (z ∼ 1), and stellar mass M* 11.4. We present accurate deblended far-infrared (FIR) flux measurements with robust errors at 24, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 μm from Spitzer and the Herschel Space Observatory using XID+. We find that the FIRC has a strong mass dependence, the evolution of which takes the form qTIR(M*) = (2.00 ± 0.01)+(−0.22 ± 0.02)(log(M/M*)−10.05). This matches recent findings in regards to the star formation rate–radio luminosity relation at 150 MHz and results from radio observations in COSMOS at 1.4 GHz with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). Our results provide tighter constraints on the low-redshift end of the FIRC and at lower frequency than the COSMOS observations. In addition, we find a mild evolution with redshift, with a best fit relation qTIR(z) = (1.94 ± 0.01)(1 + z)−0.04 ± 0.01. This evolution is shallower than that suggested by previous results at 150 MHz with the differences explained by the fact that previous studies did not account for the mass dependence. Finally, we present deblended FIR fluxes for 79 609 galaxies across the LoTSS deep fields: Boötes, ELAIS-N1, and Lockman Hole.

Background: No evidence currently exists characterising global outcomes following major cancer surgery, including esophageal cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to characterise impact of high income countries (HIC) versus low and middle income countries (LMIC) on the outcomes following esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Method: This international multi-center prospective study across 137 hospitals in 41 countries included patients who underwent an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, with 90-day follow-up. The main explanatory variable was country income, defined according to the World Bank Data classification. The primary outcome was 90-day postoperative mortality, and secondary outcomes were composite leaks (anastomotic leak or conduit necrosis) and major complications (Clavien-Dindo Grade III-V). Multivariable generalized estimating equation models were used to produce adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI95%). Results: Between April 2018 to December 2018, 2247 patients were included. Patients from HIC were more significantly older, with higher ASA grade, and more advanced tumors. Patients from LMIC had almost three-fold increase in 90-day mortality, compared to HIC (9.4% vs 3.7%, p < 0.001). On adjusted analysis, LMIC were independently associated with higher 90-day mortality (OR: 2.31, CI95%: 1.17-4.55, p = 0.015). However, LMIC were not independently associated with higher rates of anastomotic leaks (OR: 1.06, CI95%: 0.57-1.99, p = 0.9) or major complications (OR: 0.85, CI95%: 0.54-1.32, p = 0.5), compared to HIC. Conclusion: Resections in LMIC were independently associated with higher 90-day postoperative mortality, likely reflecting a failure to rescue of these patients following esophagectomy, despite similar composite anastomotic leaks and major complication rates to HIC. These findings warrant further research, to identify potential issues and solutions to improve global outcomes following esophagectomy for cancer. Background The complexity of oesophageal surgery and the significant risk of morbidity necessitates that oesophagectomy is predominantly performed by a consultant surgeon, or a senior trainee under their supervision. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of trainee involvement in oesophagectomy on postoperative outcomes in an international multicentre setting. Methods Data from the multicentre Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Study Group (OGAA) cohort study were analysed, which comprised prospectively collected data from patients undergoing oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer between April 2018 and December 2018. Procedures were grouped by the level of trainee involvement, and univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to compare patient outcomes across groups. Results Of 2232 oesophagectomies from 137 centres in 41 countries, trainees were involved in 29.1 per cent of them (n = 650), performing only the abdominal phase in 230, only the chest and/or neck phases in 130, and all phases in 315 procedures. For procedures with a chest anastomosis, those with trainee involvement had similar 90-day mortality, complication and reoperation rates to consultant-performed oesophagectomies (P = 0.451, P = 0.318, and P = 0.382, respectively), while anastomotic leak rates were significantly lower in the trainee groups (P = 0.030). Procedures with a neck anastomosis had equivalent complication, anastomotic leak, and reoperation rates (P = 0.150, P = 0.430, and P = 0.632, respectively) in trainee-involved versus consultant-performed oesophagectomies, with significantly lower 90-day mortality in the trainee groups (P = 0.005). Conclusion Trainee involvement was not found to be associated with significantly inferior postoperative outcomes for selected patients undergoing oesophagectomy. The results support continued supervised trainee involvement in oesophageal cancer surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of trainee involvement in oesophagectomy on perioperative outcomes in the international multicentre Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA). Analysis of 2232 oesophagectomies has shown that trainee involvement did not negatively impact perioperative outcomes.

The identification of an emission line is unambiguous when multiple spectral features are clearly visible in the same spectrum. However, in many cases, only one line is detected, making it difficult to correctly determine the redshift. We developed a freely available unsupervised machine-learning algorithm based on unbiased topology (UMLAUT) that can be used in a very wide variety of contexts, including the identification of single emission lines. To this purpose, the algorithm combines different sources of information, such as the apparent magnitude, size and color of the emitting source, and the equivalent width and wavelength of the detected line. In each specific case, the algorithm automatically identifies the most relevant ones (i.e., those able to minimize the dispersion associated with the output parameter). The outputs can be easily integrated into different algorithms, allowing us to combine supervised and unsupervised techniques and increasing the overall accuracy. We tested our software on WISP (WFC3 IR Spectroscopic Parallel) survey data. WISP represents one of the closest existing analogs to the near-IR spectroscopic surveys that are going to be performed by the future Euclid and Roman missions. These missions will investigate the large-scale structure of the universe by surveying a large portion of the extragalactic sky in near-IR slitless spectroscopy, detecting a relevant fraction of single emission lines. In our tests, UMLAUT correctly identifies real lines in 83.2% of the cases. The accuracy is slightly higher (84.4%) when combining our unsupervised approach with a supervised approach we previously developed.

Purpose: Germ-line testing for panels of cancer genes using next-generation sequencing is becoming more common in clinical care. We report our experience as a clinical laboratory testing both well-established, high-risk cancer genes (e.g., BRCA1/2, MLH1, MSH2) as well as more recently identified cancer genes (e.g., PALB2, BRIP1), many of which have increased but less well-defined penetrance. Methods: Clinical genetic testing was performed on over 10,000 consecutive cases referred for evaluation of germ-line cancer genes, and results were analyzed for frequency of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants, and were stratified by testing panel, gene, and clinical history. Genet Med 18 8, 823–832. Results: Overall, a molecular diagnosis was made in 9.0% of patients tested, with the highest yield in the Lynch syndrome/colorectal cancer panel. In patients with breast, ovarian, or colon/stomach cancer, positive yields were 9.7, 13.4, and 14.8%, respectively. Approximately half of the pathogenic variants identified in patients with breast or ovarian cancer were in genes other than BRCA1/2. Genet Med 18 8, 823–832. Conclusion: The high frequency of positive results in a wide range of cancer genes, including those of high penetrance and with clinical care guidelines, underscores both the genetic heterogeneity of hereditary cancer and the usefulness of multigene panels over genetic tests of one or two genes. Background: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) is a common indication for referral to cancer genetic counselors. Next generation sequencing panels allow for the efficient evaluation of many genes associated with increased risk of these cancers. The purpose of this study is to compare clinical histories of those with pathogenic variants in high risk versus low/moderate risk genes in order to determine which patients might benefit from more extensive testing by a panel approach. Methods: We queried the results of patients tested at GeneDx for a panel of 21 genes causing increased breast and/or ovarian cancer risk. Data regarding personal and family history of cancer provided on the test requisition forms were analyzed and classified according NCCN guidelines for testing criteria for HBOC syndrome. Results: Of 1709 individuals referred for testing, 146 (8.5%) tested positive for a pathogenic variant. Of these, 33% percent were found to carry a pathogenic BRCA1/2 variant while 67% tested positive for a pathogenic variant in a gene other than BRCA1/2 (CHEK2: 17%; ATM: 12%; PALB2: 10%; BRIP1: 7%; BARD1: 3%; PTEN: 3%; each of FANCC, MSH2, MSH6, NBN, PMS2, RAD51C, RAD51D: 2%; MLH1: 1%). Eighty-six percent of these individuals were affected with cancer. In the probands with a pathogenic BRCA1/2 variant, 66% were diagnosed with breast cancer and 22% with ovarian cancer compared to the probands with a pathogenic variant in a gene other than BRCA1/2 of whom 84% had a history of breast cancer and 17% had ovarian cancer. The highest number of breast cancer diagnoses were found, in decreasing order, in association with pathogenic variants in BRCA1 (20), CHEK2 (20), ATM (17), PALB2 (14), BRCA2 (13), and BRIP1 (12). The greatest number of ovarian cancers were identified, in decreasing order, in association with pathogenic variants in BRCA2 (8), BRCA1 (3), CHEK2 (3), and ATM (3). Furthermore, all of the individuals with pathogenic variants met NCCN guidelines for HBOC. Conclusion: A high yield of pathogenic variants were found in genes other than BRCA1/2. Data analysis also shows that individuals with a pathogenic variant in genes other than BRCA1/2 did not have a notably less severe clinical history than those pathogenic variants in BRCA1/2. As all individuals tested meet NCCN guidelines for HBOC testing, panel testing should be considered in this population. The ability to present cutting-edge solutions for packaging in the field of palletized products has to be considered as the result of the investments in research infrastructures and advances in applied researches. In the present article, main equipment and all the other testing facilities used to optimize palletized product are detailed. Tests are implemented in accordance with standard and no standard procedures up to fully innovative methods. This approach is able to provide advice both on the most appropriate palletizing scheme to pack the load, either on the best packaging methods able to conserve intact the product to the consumer. For customer it represents a great added value that allows to experience first-hand palletizing solutions, packaging and stability of the load, reducing production costs and optimizing efficiency.

We have reduced the data taken with the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) photometer on board the Herschel Space Observatory in the Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). We describe the data reduction, which poses specific challenges, both because of the sheer size of the data, and because only two scans are made for each region. We implement effective solutions to process the bolometric timelines into maps, and show that correlations among detectors are negligible, and that the photometer is stable on time scales up to 250 s. This is longer than the time the telescope takes to cross the observed sky region, and it allows us to use naive binning methods for an optimal reconstruction of the sky emission. The maps have equal contribution of confusion and white instrumental noise, and the latter is estimated to 5.3, 6.4, and 6.7 mJy/beam (1-{\sigma}), at 250, 350, and 500 \mu{m}, respectively. This pipeline is used to reduce other H-ATLAS observations, as they became available, and we discuss how it can be used with the optimal map maker implemented in the Herschel Interactive Processing Environment (HIPE), to improve computational efficiency and stability. We present first results of a study of the submillimetre (rest frame far-infrared) properties of z~3 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and their lower-redshift counterparts BX/BM galaxies, based on Herschel-SPIRE observations of the Northern field of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS-N). We use stacking analysis to determine the properties of LBGs well below the current limit of the survey. Although LBGs are not detected individually, stacking the infrared luminous LBGs (those detected with Spitzer at 24 microns yields a statistically significant submm detection with mean flux = 5.9+/-1.4 mJy confirming the power of SPIRE in detecting UV-selected high-redshift galaxies at submillimetre wavelengths. In comparison, the Spitzer 24 microns detected BX/BM galaxies appear fainter with a stacked value of = 2.7 +/-0.8 mJy. By fitting the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) we derive median infrared luminosities, L_{IR}, of 2.8x10^{12} Lsun and 1.5x10^{11} Lsun for z~3 LBGs and BX/BMs, respectively. We find that $L_{IR} estimates derived from present measurements are in good agreement with those based on UV data for z~2 BX/BM galaxies, unlike the case for z~3 infrared luminous LBGs where the UV underestimates the true $L_{IR}. Although sample selection effects may influence this result we suggest that differences in physical properties (such as morphologies, dust distribution and extent of star-forming regions) between z ~3 LBGs and z~2 BX/BMs may also play a significant role.

We present spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 68 Herschel sources detected at 5-sigma at 250, 350 and 500 mu in the HerMES SWIRE-Lockman field. We explore whether existing models for starbursts, quiescent star-forming galaxies and for AGN dust tori are able to model the full range of SEDs measured with Herschel. We find that while many galaxies (~ 56 %) are well fitted with the templates used to fit IRAS, ISO and Spitzer sources, for about half the galaxies two new templates are required: quiescent ('cirrus') models with colder (10-20 K) dust, and a young starburst model with higher optical depth than Arp 220. Predictions of submillimetre fluxes based on model fits to 4.5-24 mu data agree rather poorly with the observed fluxes, but the agreement is better for fits to 4.5-70 mu data. Herschel galaxies detected at 500 mu tend to be those with the very highest dust masses.

We present a comparison between the SCUBA Half Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) at 450 and 850 microns in the Lockman Hole East with a deep Spitzer Space Telescope survey at 3.6-24 microns conducted in Guaranteed Time. Using stacking analyses we demonstrate a striking correspondence between the galaxies contributing the submm extragalactic background light, with those likely to dominate the backgrounds at Spitzer wavelengths. Using a combination BRIzK plus Spitzer photometric redshifts, we show that at least a third of the Spitzer-identified submm galaxies at 1 and specific star formation rates are in striking disagreement with some semi-analytic predictions from the Millenium simulation. The discrepancy could either be resolved with a top-heavy initial mass function, or a significant component of the submm flux heated by the interstellar radiation field., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. The SUpernova Diversity And Rate Evolution (SUDARE) programme on the VLT Survey Telescope aims to collect an unbiased and homogeneous sample of supernovae (SNe) in all types of gal- axies out to redshift ~ 0.6. In four years, around 500 Type i a and core-collapse SNe are expected to be discovered, including significant numbers of rare SN types. The programme is outlined and 100 SNe candidates have already been detected in the first year of the pro- gramme. Follow-up spectroscopy of the SN candidates, an important aspect of the programme, is also described.

OBJECTIVE To show the relevance of cosmetic appearance in the adequate treatment of patients with exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC), and to indicate that surgery by experienced teams can improve the long-term treatment forecast and the patient's body image. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 1978 to 2002, 71 patients diagnosed with EEC were treated in the authors' institution; 24 (aged 2-23 years) were selected to undergo different surgical procedures. The criterion for surgery considered interviews conducted by the psychology team with the parents and children. The plastic surgery and paediatric urology teams carried out the procedures jointly; the follow-up was 0.33-7 years. RESULTS Five female patients and six male had abdominoplasty to treat multiple scars; eight had intermittent catheterization conduits repositioned from the right iliac fossa to the umbilicus. Six female patients had plastic surgery of the external genitalia and three had a broad mobilization of the urogenital sinus. Thirteen male patients had a small penis and had the corpora cavernosa fully mobilized and the penis reconstructed. Five female patients and one male had anterior osteotomy. One patient with no left testis had it replaced and one patient with uterine prolapse had the uterus fixed to the posterior abdominal wall. Six patients had a second procedure, in two because the outcome of the initial operation was poor and in the others to complement the initial treatment. In all but one patient there was an improvement in the objective criteria, e.g. school absences, difficulty in establishing long-lasting social relationships and refusal to participate in sports activities. However, none of the patients would attempt sexual intercourse. CONCLUSIONS Body image, self-esteem, sexuality, sexual function and fertility are deemed crucial by adolescents; in patients with EEC customised surgical procedures can give a satisfactory aesthetic outcome, and be a further reason for adequately following occasional urinary complications and renal function, to avoid loss to follow-up.

We set out to determine the ratio, q(IR), of rest-frame 8-1000um flux, S(IR), to monochromatic radio flux, S(1.4GHz), for galaxies selected at far-IR and radio wavelengths, to search for signs that the ratio evolves with redshift, luminosity or dust temperature, and to identify any far-IR-bright outliers - useful laboratories for exploring why the far-IR/radio correlation is generally so tight when the prevailing theory suggests variations are almost inevitable. We use flux-limited 250-um and 1.4-GHz samples, obtained in GOODS-N using Herschel (HerMES; PEP) and the VLA. We determine bolometric IR output using ten bands spanning 24-1250um, exploiting data from PACS and SPIRE, as well as Spitzer, SCUBA, AzTEC and MAMBO. We also explore the properties of an L(IR)-matched sample, designed to reveal evolution of q(IR) with z, spanning log L(IR) = 11-12 L(sun) and z=0-2, by stacking into the radio and far-IR images. For 1.4-GHz-selected galaxies, we see tentative evidence of a break in the flux ratio, q(IR), at L(1.4GHz) ~ 10^22.7 W/Hz, where AGN are starting to dominate the radio power density, and of weaker correlations with z and T(d). From our 250-um-selected sample we identify a small number of far-IR-bright outliers, and see trends of q(IR) with L(1.4GHz), L(IR), T(d) and z, noting that some of these are inter-related. For our L(IR)-matched sample, there is no evidence that q(IR) changes significantly as we move back into the epoch of galaxy formation: we find q(IR) goes as (1+z)^gamma, where gamma = -0.04 +/- 0.03 at z=0-2; however, discounting the least reliable data at z1., A&A Herschel Special Issue, in press as a Letter. 5 pages

Lifestyle factors are responsible for a considerable portion of cancer incidence worldwide, but credible estimates from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) suggest that the fraction of cancers attributable to toxic environmental exposures is between 7% and 19%. To explore the hypothesis that low-dose exposures to mixtures of chemicals in the environment may be combining to contribute to environmental carcinogenesis, we reviewed 11 hallmark phenotypes of cancer, multiple priority target sites for disruption in each area and prototypical chemical disruptors for all targets, this included dose-response characterizations, evidence of low-dose effects and cross-hallmark effects for all targets and chemicals. In total, 85 examples of chemicals were reviewed for actions on key pathways/ mechanisms related to carcinogenesis. Only 15% (13/85) were found to have evidence of a dose-response threshold, whereas 59% (50/85) exerted low-dose effects. No dose-response information was found for the remaining 26% (22/85). Our analysis suggests that the cumulative effects of individual (non-carcinogenic) chemicals acting on different pathways, and a variety of related systems, organs, tissues and cells could plausibly conspire to produce carcinogenic synergies. Additional basic research on carcinogenesis and research focused on low-dose effects of chemical mixtures needs to be rigorously pursued before the merits of this hypothesis can be further advanced. However, the structure of the World Health Organization International Programme on Chemical Safety 'Mode of Action' framework should be revisited as it has inherent weaknesses that are not fully aligned with our current understanding of cancer biology. © The Author 2015.

In order to offer data on the epidemiological profile of women with low bone density (LBD), we have considered information collected in the framework of a large cross-sectional study conducted on women around menopause attending a network of first level outpatients menopause clinics in Italy.During 1997 and 2000, a large cross sectional study was conducted on the characteristics of women around menopause attending a network of first level outpatients menopause clinics in Italy for general counseling about menopause or treatment of menopausal symptoms. Eligible for the study were women consecutively observed during the study period. Up to March 2000 a total of 42464 women (mean age 53 years) were observed at the 268 participating centers. Bone mass density was measured in 25113 cases, which are considered in this analysis. LBD (i.e. osteopenia or osteoporosis) was defined according to WHO classification.The frequency of LBD increased with age: in comparison with women agedor =51 years, the odds ratio (OR) of LBD was 1.5 and 2.2, respectively, in women aged 52-55 andor =56. No association emerged between LBD and parity: in comparison with nulliparae, the OR of LBD were 1.1 and 1.0, respectively, in women reported 1 or 2 or more full term pregnancies. Smokers were at increased risk of LBD, the corresponding OR being for smokers, in comparison with non smokers, 1.2 (95% confidence interval, CI, 1.1-1.3). In comparison with women in the lower tertile of body mass index, the OR of LBD decreased in subsequent tertiles, being, respectively, 0.9 and 0.7 in the middle and highest tertile. The OR of LBD was 2.2 in postmenopausal women, in comparison with premenopausal ones and the OR decreased increasing age at menopause. Ever OC users were at slightly decreased risk of LBD: in comparison with never OC users, the OR was 0.9 (95% CI 0.8-1.0) in ever OC users.The results of this large study confirm, in a Southern European population, the association of age at menopause and body mass on the risk of LBD, and suggest that ever OC women are at decreased risk of LBD.

Background The aim of this study was to investigate the left ventricular (LV) remodeling and function in 24 asymptomatic young adults affected by β-thalassemia intermedia (TI), in order to compare the obtained data with that of 80 patients affected by β-thalassemia major (TM) and 65 healthy subjects. Methods LV volumes and shapes, mass index, mass/volume ratio, systolic and diastolic function, stroke volume, and cardiac index were determined by two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography. Results In the TM and TI groups, LV volumes, diastolic and systolic shapes were significantly different from the control subjects, but the ejection fraction was slightly reduced only in the TM group. The TI group had larger LV volumes than did the TM group (mean [± SD] end-diastolic volume index, 99.4 ± 21.9 vs 82.7 ± 21.5 mL/m 2 , respectively [p 2 , respectively[p Conclusions Asymptomatic young adults with TI show significant increases in LV volumes, LV mass, and cardiac index that are more pronounced than those in TM patients. LV systolic function is preserved in the TI group but is slightly depressed in the TM group due to the increase of afterload and to reduced contractility. The hemodynamic and hematologic factors involved in the etiopathogenesis of these findings are discussed, such as the treatment strategy.

Objective: To analyse determinants of hysterectomy for benign uterine conditions with or without oophorectomy in Italy, a country with among the lowest rates of hysterectomy worldwide. Methods: Between 1997 and 1999, a large cross sectional study was conducted on the characteristics of women around menopause attending a network of first level outpatients menopause clinics in Italy for general counselling about menopause or treatment of menopausal symptoms. A total of 25 644 women entered the study. Characteristics of women who underwent and women who did not undergo hysterectomy and oophorectomy were compared. Results: Out of the 25644 women considered, 4727 were hysterectomized (18.4%). Mean age at surgery was 46.8 years. The OR of hysterectomy decreased with increasing educational level: in comparison with women with primary and none education, the OR of hysterectomy was 0.8 (95% CI 0.7-0.9) and 0.6 (95% CI 0.5 0.7) respectively for women with intermediate or high university degree. Body mass index (BMI, kg m -2 ) was related to the frequency of hysterectomy; in comparison with women with BMI ≤ 23.8, the OR of hysterectomy was 1.2 (95% CI 1.1 1.3) and 1.4 (95% CI 1.2-1.5) respectively for women with a BMI 23.8-27.2 and > 27.2. The frequency, of bilateral oophorectomy increased with age at hysterectomy: in comparison with women who have had hysterectomy when aged ≤43 years, the OR of bilateral oophorectomy during hysterectomy was respectively 1.9, 3.4 and 4.3 in women who had hysterectomy at age 44 47, 48 51 and > 52 years. The frequency of bilateral oophorectomy was lower in more educated women: in comparison with women reporting none or primary degree the OR was 1.0 and 0.8 respectively for women with intermediate and high university degree. Conclusions: The results of this analysis indicate that hysterectomy for benign conditions is more frequently performed in less educated women, in nulliparae and in women with higher BMI. During hysterectomy for benign conditions, bilateral oophorectomy is more frequent in less educated women and its frequency increases with women's age.

We quantify the fraction of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) that originates from galaxies identified in the UV/optical/near-infrared by stacking 81,250 (~35.7 arcmin^2) K-selected sources (K_AB < 24.0), split according to their rest-frame U - V vs. V - J colors into 72,216 star-forming and 9,034 quiescent galaxies, on maps from Spitzer/MIPS (24um), Herschel/SPIRE (250, 350, 500um), Herschel/PACS (100, 160um), and AzTEC (1100um). The fraction of the CIB resolved by our catalog is (69 $\pm$ 15)% at 24um, (78 $\pm$ 17)% at 70um, (58 $\pm$ 13)% at 100um, (78 $\pm$ 18)% at 160um, (80 $\pm$ 17)% at 250um, (69 $\pm$ 14)% at 350um, (65 $\pm$ 12)% at 500um, and (45 $\pm$ 8)% at 1100um. Of that total, about 95% originates from star-forming galaxies, while the remaining 5% is from apparently quiescent galaxies. The CIB at $��$ < 200um is sourced predominantly from galaxies at z < 1, while at $��$ > 200um the bulk originates from 1 < z < 2. Galaxies with stellar masses log(M/ M_sun)=9.5-11 are responsible for the majority of the CIB, with those in the log(M/ M_sun)=9.5-10 contributing mostly at $��$ < 250um, and those in the log(M/ M_sun)=10.5-11 bin dominating at $��$ > 350um. The contribution from galaxies in the log(M/ M_sun)=9.0-9.5 and log(M/ M_sun)=11.0-12.0 stellar mass bins contribute the least, both of order 5%, although the highest stellar-mass bin is a significant contributor to the luminosity density at z > 2. The luminosities of the galaxies responsible for the CIB shifts from a combination of "normal" and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) at $��$ < 160um, to LIRGs at 160um < $��$ < 500um, to finally LIRGs and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at $��$ > 500um. Signaling through interleukin-7 receptor (IL-7R) is essential for regulation of T-cell homeostasis and survival. Previously, we and others have found diminished IL-7R levels in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) - infected non-human primates and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) - infected patients. To date, it remains unknown whether changes in IL-7R expression could also be linked to non-infectious inflammatory diseases such as asthma or anti-inflammatory drug use. Here, we investigated through flow cytometry the levels of IL-7R expression on CD4+ and CD4- T-cells in asthmatic patients in relation to disease severity, immune status and glucocorticoid (GC) use. In addition, we sought to evaluate the effects of in vivo and in vitro GC treatment on IL-7R expression in both asthmatic patients and SIV-infected non-human primates. We demonstrated that expression of IL-7R on peripheral blood CD4+ T-cells was significantly decreased in clinically stable GC-naive mild and moderate asthmatic patients. Accordingly, the development of asthmatic reaction following bronchial allergen challenge performed in sensitized subjects was associated with a significant drop in levels of IL-7R on circulating CD4+ T-cells. In contrast, CD4+ T-cells from both, mild and moderate, but not severe asthmatics, treated with inhaled GC displayed levels of IL-7R similar to that seen in healthy controls. We did not find significant differences with serum or sputum interleukin-7 levels among healthy controls and GC-naïve and GC-treated asthmatic patients. Furthermore, both in vitro GC treatment and short-term oral GC administration to asthmatic patients resulted in a significant enhancement of IL-7R. Similarly, we demonstrated that GC-stimulated T-cells from SIV-infected non-human primates up-regulated IL-7R expression. Accordingly, experimental short-term systemic in vivo administration of GC to SIV-infected macaques led to enhancement of IL-7R expression on circulating T-cells. Our data indicate that GC bear potential to recover diminished IL-7R expression, as well in asthma as in lentiviral infection.

The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of galanin on basal and GHRH-stimulated GH secretion in a healthy group of elderly subjects and in a healthy group of young subjects for comparison. Ten old subjects (mean age 75 +/- 1.15 years) and an equal number of healthy young volunteers (mean age 26 +/- 0.71 years) underwent three stimulation tests in random order. Galanin infusion for 60 minutes (10 micrograms/kg in 100 ml saline) failed to provoke an appreciable release of circulating GH in old subjects, while it induced a significant increase of plasma GH in the young adults; GHRH administration i.v. in bolus (100 micrograms in 1 ml saline) elicited a significant GH response in both groups; however, in the older group GH response was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than in the young adults. The administration of galanin (10 micrograms/kg in 100 ml saline as an i.v. infusion for 60 min) plus GHRH (100 micrograms in 1 ml saline i.v. in bolus), potentiated GH response in old and young subjects. The combined administration of two peptides was able to elicit a clear GH release even in the older subjects who were hyporesponsive/unresponsive to galanin and/or GHRH alone. In the elderly, plasma GH values observed after the combined stimuli overlapped with GH values observed after GHRH alone in the young adults. In conclusion, our study confirms that galanin has a synergic effect with GHRH on GH release both in younger and elderly subjects. Moreover, our data confirm an impaired responsivity to GHRH in the elderly and demonstrate that galanin is able to normalize response of somatotrophs to GHRH in old people.

We show in local density approximation the effect of exchange-correlation potentials on the electronic stopping of slow protons in metals, evaluated in the frame of a simple model, whose results are in good agreement with density-functional calculations.

Soil washing is a remediation technology commonly used to treat soil contaminated by total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) (Seyed Razavi et al., 2012). Nowadays in Italy there are about ten plants, mainly placed in the north of the country. After treatment, coarse materials (i.e. gravel and sand) are cleaned and can be reused, e.g. as aggregate for concrete production; contaminants are concentrated in the filter-pressed sludge containing fine grains (i.e silt and clay), which is usually landfilled. This paper analyses different alternatives for sludge reuse at an industrial scale in Italy; the main normative and technical constraints are presented and discussed. In addition, the preliminary results of a lab-scale experimentation aimed at investigating the treatability of soil washing residues by wet oxidation are presented. The reuse and valorisation of soil washing originated sludge is desirable not only from the economic point of view but also because Italian and European legislation put waste recycling as a priority. Several tens of thousands of tons of sludge are produced and landfilled in Italy every year; they represent materials which could be exploited at industrial scale in place of virgin silt and clay to produce stabilised soil for road construction or bricks in brick works. Sludge reuse for cement production is possible, too, but it is probably more expensive. The use of raw sludge produced in soil washing plants implies a potential risk of environmental contamination therefore the basic condition for sludge recovery and reuse is its decontamination, which can be theoretically obtained by thermal desorption, solvent extraction or chemical oxidation. Wet oxidation tests executed by the authors indicate that such a process is potentially applicable. 98 % removal efficiency of TPHs was obtained in a lab-scale reactor setting temperature, treatment time and initial oxygen pressure to 250 °C, 30 min and 20 atm, respectively. Further tests will be carried out in order to identify the most favourable and cheapest treatment conditions.

Structural transformations at high pressure in amorphous and quartz-like crystalline GeO(2) have been investigated by using a Paris-Edinburgh press coupled to EXAFS spectroscopy. From both the germanium absorption edge position and the Ge-O distance evolution, new detailed information has been obtained about the pressure behavior of the short range order. Crystalline GeO(2) undergoes a transformation from four- to six-fold coordination at about 8.5 GPa, but at least the whole 6-12 GPa pressure range should be considered as the transition region. On the other hand, amorphous GeO(2) is characterized by a much more gradual structural change and the full octahedral state is not reached at 13 GPa as commonly believed. Furthermore, no support to the recently claimed fully pentahedral intermediate state can be given. EXAFS signals of glassy GeO(2) beyond the first Ge-O shell qualitatively confirm the continuous breakdown of the intermediate range order up to 10 GPa.

The present high-pressure studies of ${\text{CuFeO}}_{2}$ to 30 GPa using x-ray diffraction, along with $^{57}\text{F}\text{e}$ M\"ossbauer and Fe and $\text{Cu}\text{ }K$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy methods, reveal a sequence of intricate structural/electronic-magnetic pressure-induced transitions. The low-pressure $R\overline{3}m$ structure (0--18 GPa) is composed of sheets of ${\text{Fe}}_{S=5/2}^{3+}$ ions alternating with layers of ${\text{O-Cu}}_{S=0}^{1+}\text{-O}$ dumbbells, the latter oriented along the $c$ axis. This structure is characterized by an unusual positive $d(c/a)/dP$. At 18 GPa a structural transition takes place to a more isotropic $C2/c$ structure with the ${\text{O-Cu}}_{S=0}^{1+}\text{-O}$ axis tilted $28\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ from the $c$ axis and with negative $d(c/a)/dP$. This transition corroborates with the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order. Starting at $\ensuremath{\sim}23\text{ }\text{GPa}$, with an initial volume reduction in $\ensuremath{\sim}|\ensuremath{\Delta}V/{V}_{0}|=0.16$, the Cu-Fe bands overlap and this leads to a $({\text{Cu}}_{S=0}^{1+}{\text{Fe}}_{S=5/2}^{3+})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}({\text{Cu}}_{S=1/2}^{2+}{\text{Fe}}_{S=2}^{2+})$ interionic valence exchange in about 1/3 of the $C2/c{\text{-CuFeO}}_{2}$ at 27 GPa. As a result: (i) the ${\text{Cu}}^{2+}\text{-O}$ becomes fourfold coordinated and is in a new crystallographic structure with space group $P\overline{3}m$, and (ii) the N\'eel temperature increases above twofold $[{T}_{\text{N}}({\text{Cu}}_{S=1/2}^{2+}{\text{Fe}}_{S=2}^{2+})\ensuremath{\approx}2.2{T}_{\text{N}}({\text{Cu}}_{S=0}^{1+}{\text{Fe}}_{S=5/2}^{3+})]$. This sequence of transitions is reversible with minimal hysteresis.

It will survey 570 deg2 of the extragalactic sky, 4 times larger than all the other Herschel extragalactic surveys combined, in five far-infrared and submillimeter bands. We describe the survey, the complementary multiwavelength data sets that will be combined with the Herschel data, and the six major science programs we are undertaking. Using new models based on a previous submillimeter survey of galaxies, we present predictions of the properties of the ATLAS sources in other wave bands.

The Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE), is the Herschel Space Observatory`s submillimetre camera and spectrometer. It contains a three-band imaging photometer operating at 250, 350 and 500 microns, and an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) which covers simultaneously its whole operating range of 194-671 microns (447-1550 GHz). The SPIRE detectors are arrays of feedhorn-coupled bolometers cooled to 0.3 K. The photometer has a field of view of 4' x 8', observed simultaneously in the three spectral bands. Its main operating mode is scan-mapping, whereby the field of view is scanned across the sky to achieve full spatial sampling and to cover large areas if desired. The spectrometer has an approximately circular field of view with a diameter of 2.6'. The spectral resolution can be adjusted between 1.2 and 25 GHz by changing the stroke length of the FTS scan mirror. Its main operating mode involves a fixed telescope pointing with multiple scans of the FTS mirror to acquire spectral data. For extended source measurements, multiple position offsets are implemented by means of an internal beam steering mirror to achieve the desired spatial sampling and by rastering of the telescope pointing to map areas larger than the field of view. The SPIRE instrument consists of a cold focal plane unit located inside the Herschel cryostat and warm electronics units, located on the spacecraft Service Module, for instrument control and data handling. Science data are transmitted to Earth with no on-board data compression, and processed by automatic pipelines to produce calibrated science products. The in-flight performance of the instrument matches or exceeds predictions based on pre-launch testing and modelling: the photometer sensitivity is comparable to or slightly better than estimated pre-launch, and the spectrometer sensitivity is also better by a factor of 1.5-2., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophyics (Herschel first results special issue)

We report an in situ high pressure investigation of the structural change in vitreous As(2)S(3) up to 60 GPa using the diamond anvil cell and energy dispersive x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The main finding of the present study is a gradual elongation of the average As-S bond length, which takes place in the pressure range of 15-50 GPa. This change is interpreted as a signature of the coordination number increase around As atoms. The negative shift of the As K absorption edge position confirms the progressive metallization of the glass at high pressure. The observed changes are reversible after pressure release.

We present a concept for the payload SAGACE, the Spectroscopic Active Galaxies And Cluster Explorer, devoted to study the evolution of Universe structures using different observables, all of them in the mm/submm wavelength. The SAGACE payload is made of a passively cooled 3 m telescope, a cryogenic Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) and detector arrays to be operated at 0.3 K by a 3He fridge. The detectors are Ti/Au Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers with a NEP

To estimate the opacity of very high‐energy photons with the background light, we have modelled the extragalactic optical and infrared diffuse light using available information on cosmic sources in the universe from far‐UV to sub‐millimeter wavelengths over a wide range of cosmic epochs. To this end we have used number counts, redshift distributions, luminosity functions of extragalactic sources and direct measurements or upper limits to the extragalactic backgrounds by COBE. From the redshift‐dependent background spectrum, the photon‐photon opacities for sources of high‐energy emission at any redshifts were then computed. We have applied our photon‐photon opacity estimates to the analysis of spectral data at TeV energies on a few BLAZARs of particular interest (including a z = 0.54 quasar detected by MAGIC, 3C279). We find no evidence in current data for any truly diffuse background components in addition to those from resolved sources. We have tested in particular the effects of a photon background orig...

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure has been measured at the K edge of copper in CuScO2 and CuLaO2 to investigate the local origin of negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c axis. A positive expansion of the Cu-O bond has been measured within the entire temperature interval to be contrasted with the negative expansion of the distance between average atomic positions measured by diffraction; the inadequacy of the riding correction to diffraction data has been evidenced. The weak temperature dependence of the parallel mean-square relative displacement (MSRD) indicates a rather stiff Cu-O bond, while the large perpendicular MSRD measures an intense relative motion of copper with respect to oxygen atoms perpendicular to the c axis. The comparison between the two compounds enlightens the relevance of the correlation of perpendicular motion to quantitatively explain the apparent NTE of the Cu-O bond.

The appearance of an increased pulmonary artery (PA) pressure is an important moment in the clinical history of mitral stenosis. A direct measurement of PA pressure levels is possible only with rightsided cardiac catheterization. This technique, being invasive is not risk-free and, consequently, many noninvasive methods for the evaluation of PA pressure have been proposed.1 These procedures usually lack sensitivity and are limited in their ability to detect and quantify mild to moderate modifications of PA pressure. The introduction of Doppler echocardiography allowed the development of new procedures.2–6 Unfortunately this method is not applicable in the absence of Doppler-detectable tricuspid regurgitation.7 Furthermore, the computed systolic PA pressure value is approximate because a clinical estimation of the right atrial pressure is necessary. Moreover, a good acoustic window and satisfactory flow tracings are indispensable. To avoid the aforementioned drawbacks we attempted a different approach to the noninvasive estimation of PA pressure, devising a method based on the modifications induced by an increased PA pressure on the power spectrum of the pulmonary component of the second heart sound. We used fast-Fourier analysis to examine the acoustic characteristics of this heart sound and to define its frequency distribution in patients with normal and increased PA pressure to search for a relation between the PA pressure level and the spectral characteristics of the pulmonary component of the second heart sound.
