The mail was the main means of communication in Colombia during the nineteenth century. In this case, what was transported and distributed by the postal system; such as, the private letters, is appealing. These provided valuable data on the historical context in which they were written, and on those who created them. In addition, they contained privilege information, in order to know the social and political relations of that time. For this reason, in this paper, it is presented a document valoration of all the written, also, sent letters by Mamerto Garcia Montoya (1818-1881) during the period of 1843-1847. This merchant was born in Rionegro (Antioquia) and developed business activities, like mining, the bill of exchange transferring, foreign trading, thus the intermediation in the minting gold. Through this assessment, it is seeked to demostrate the usefulness of the correspondence may have as a source for historical research. In this case, for the commerce study in Antioquia during the nineteenth century.

Resumen El correo fue el principal medio de comunicación en Colombia durante el siglo XIX. Interesan, en este caso, de lo transportado y distribuido por el sistema postal, las cartas privadas. Estas proporcionan datos valiosos sobre el contexto histórico en el que fueron escritas y sobre quienes las crearon. Además, contienen información privilegiada para conocer las relaciones comerciales, sociales y políticas de la época. Por tal motivo se presenta en este artículo una valoración documental de las cartas enviadas y recibidas por Mamerto García Montoya (1818-1881) durante el período 1843-1847. Este comerciante nació en Rionegro (Antioquia) y desarrolló actividades comerciales como la minería, el giro de letras de cambio, el comercio exterior y la intermediación en la acuñación de oro. Así, a través de esta valoración se busca evidenciar la utilidad de la correspondencia como fuente para la investigación histórica, en este caso, para el estudio del comercio en Antioquia durante el siglo XIX. Interessam, neste caso, do transportado e distribuído pelo sistema postal, as cartas particulares. Estas proporcionam dados valiosos sobre o contexto histórico no qual foram escritas e sobre quem as criou. Além disso, contêm informação privilegiada para conhecer as relações comerciais, sociais e políticas da época. Por esse motivo, apresenta-se neste artigo uma avaliação documental das cartas enviadas e recebidas por Mamerto García Montoya (1818-1881) durante o período 1843-1847. Este comerciante nasceu em Rionegro (Antioquia) e desenvolveu atividades comerciais como a mineração, a remessa de letras de câmbio, o comércio exterior e a intermediação na cunhagem de ouro. Desta forma, através desta avaliação procura-se evidenciar a utilidade da correspondência como fonte para a pesquisa histórica, neste caso, para o estudo do comércio em Antioquia durante o século XIX.
