2. Wrist Position Sense in Two Dimensions: Between-Hand Symmetry and Anisotropic Accuracy Across the Space

Abstract

A deep investigation of proprioceptive processes is necessary to understand the relationship between sensory afferent inputs and motor outcomes. In this work, we investigate whether and how perception of wrist position is influenced by the direction along which the movement occurs. Most previous studies have tested Joint Position Sense (JPS) through 1 degree of freedom (DoF) wrist movements, such as flexion/extension (FE) or radial/ulnar deviation (RUD). However, the wrist joint has 3-DoF and many activities of daily living produce combined movements, requiring at least 2-DoF wrist coordination. For this reason, in this study, target positions involved movement directions that combined wrist flexion or extension with radial or ulnar deviation. The chosen task was a robot-aided Joint Position Matching (JPM), in which blindfolded participants actively reproduced a previously passively assumed target joint configuration. The JPM performance of 20 healthy participants was quantified through measures of accuracy and precision, in terms of both perceived target direction and distance along each direction of movement. Twelve different directions of movement were selected and both hands tested. The left and right hand led to comparable results, both target extents and directions were differently perceived according to the target direction on the FE/RUD space. Moreover, during 2-DoF combined movements, subjects’ perception of directions was impaired when compared to 1-DoF target movements. In summary, our results showed that human perception of wrist position on the FE/RUD space is symmetric between hands but not isotropic among movement directions.

3. Building Low-Resource NER Models Using Non-Speaker Annotation

Abstract

In low-resource natural language processing (NLP), the key problems are a lack of target language training data, and a lack of native speakers to create it. Cross-lingual methods have had notable success in addressing these concerns, but in certain common circumstances, such as insufficient pre-training corpora or languages far from the source language, their performance suffers. In this work we propose a complementary approach to building low-resource Named Entity Recognition (NER) models using ``non-speaker'' (NS) annotations, provided by annotators with no prior experience in the target language. We recruit 30 participants in a carefully controlled annotation experiment with Indonesian, Russian, and Hindi. We show that use of NS annotators produces results that are consistently on par or better than cross-lingual methods built on modern contextual representations, and have the potential to outperform with additional effort. We conclude with observations of common annotation patterns and recommended implementation practices, and motivate how NS annotations can be used in addition to prior methods for improved performance. Abstract

A new species of eriophyoid mite Aceria alhagi n. sp. inhabiting the weed Alhagi maurorum Medik., is described from the type locality in Iran, but it was also collected from Uzbekistan, Turkey and Armenia. This mite causes changes of the leaves and inflorescence. Infested plants develop cauliflower-like galls on the inflorescence and leaves deforming the reproductive structures and inhibiting seed production. The potential reduction in seed set suggests that this mite could constitute a potential biological control agent against this noxious weed. To investigate intraspecific variability between A. alhagi n. sp. populations from Iran, Turkey and Armenia, we analysed molecular sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI). These results indicated that there are no significant intraspecific divergences among populations of A.alhagi n. sp. from the five different localities in three West Asia countries. This finding can be used in the future research of certain mite populations as biological control agent. © Vidović B. et al.

Abstract

Background A large amount of genetic studies have clearly demonstrated the existence of a genetic suscepti-bility to Paget’s disease of bone (PDB). Although the disease is genetically heterogeneous, the SQSTM1⁄p62gene, encoding a protein with a pathophysiological role in both osteoclast differentiation and activity, has beenfound worldwide to harbour germline mutations in most of the PDB patients from geographically distant popula-tions originating from different areas of Europe, both in sporadic and familial cases.Materials and Methods Thus, SQSTM1⁄p62 gene mutations may confer an increased lifetime risk of develop-ing PDB.Results Several different genotype-phenotype analyses have shown a high penetrance for such mutations.These results suggest the opportunity to perform genetic testing in affected individuals and then, after the iden-tification of a SQSTM1⁄p62 gene germline mutation, in their relatives as a real and concrete strategy to increasethe diagnostic sensitivity in most of the asymptomatic mutant carriers. However, it is of note to underlie that anincomplete penetrance for SQSTM1⁄p62 gene mutations has also been reported.Conclusions In light of all these contradictory evidences, a review on whether, when and why apply the DNAtest to those subjects, its interpretation and clinical application is necessary. Abstract

In this work, we report a five-year study (2008-2013) of a coypu sub-population in a Mediterranean remnant wetland. Using a standardized transect, irregular inter-annual and seasonal patterns in mean abundance were observed over the five year period. A first phase of demographic explosion in autumn-winter 2008 was followed from 2009 to 2011 by a yearly-based hump-shaped pattern, with a progressive increase from winter to summer and a decline in abundance from late summer to winter. In 2013, a population crash was observed, with individuals being detected only occasionally. In 2010-2011, pattern in mean abundance was significantly correlated to pattern in minimum daily temperatures. Finally, in February 2012 a single event of snow with low temperatures probably contribute to the local population collapse. The correspondence between a strong isolated meteorological event (snow and sleet) and the disappearance of clear seasonal hump-shaped patterns followed by a population collapse suggests that this single climatic phenomenon played a role in strongly reducing coypu numbers. Our data may corroborate the hypothesis that extrinsic environmental stochasticity and intrinsic physiological sensitivity to cold weather may be important factors affecting coypu population dynamics. We hypothesize that this peripheral population may be a sink of a larger meta-population at regional scale. Our data may also have implications for wildlife management. In fact, at least for peripheral sub-populations, control/eradication plans should also take into consideration uncertainty deriving from stochastic events, which, disrupting local demography, may affect control success. In this regard, knowledge of spatial structure of coypu sub-populations may be important to devise appropriate strategies of population control.Download the complete issue.

Abstract

Le elevate densità raggiunte da Aedes albopictus in molte città italiane rappresentano non solo un problema ecto-parassitario, ma anche un rischio di trasmissione di arbovirus, soprattutto in relazione alla possibile importazione di arbovirus patogeni (es. Dengue e Febbre Gialla) da parte di viaggiatori o migranti provenienti da aree endemiche. In effetti, nell’agosto del 2007 nella provincia di Ravenna, Ae. albopictus è stata responsabile di una epidemia del virus Chikungunya che ha causato più di 200 casi di malattia confermati, a partire da un singolo individuo infetto recentemente arrivato in Italia dall’India. L’ampia diffusione di questo potenziale vettore in Italia impone una maggiore conoscenza di alcuni aspetti della sua biologia utili alla valutazione del rischio di trasmissione di patogeni ed alla corretta pianificazione delle azioni di controllo, quali le abitudini di puntura e di riposo e la capacità di dispersione in funzione della ricerca dell’ospite oppure dei siti di ovideposizione. L’obiettivo della presente tesi di dottorato è l’analisi della capacità di dispersione di Ae. albopictus in differenti contesti ecologici italiani. Infatti, la maggior parte delle conoscenze oggi a disposizione su questo ed altri aspetti della biologia di Ae. albopictus derivano da studi effettuati in regioni del sud-est asiatico e del continente sud-americano. Tali informazioni, riferendosi a contesti molto differenti da quelli delle aree temperate, sono difficilmente applicabili alle popolazioni di Ae. albopictus del nostro Paese. Sono stati condotti esperimenti di Marcaggio-Rilascio-Ricattura in un’area di 250 m di raggio all’interno della Città Universitaria, dell’Università “Sapienza” di Roma (RM) nel 2008, ed in un’area rurale/periurbana, di 500 m di raggio nel Comune di Piove di Sacco, in provincia di Padova (PD) nel 2009. Ogni esperimento è stato replicato 3 volte rilasciando circa 500 femmine blood-fed a RM e circa 1.000 a PD. La ricattura degli individui rilasciati è stata effettuata mediante l’uso di 55 sticky traps a RM, e 96 a PD, per un periodo di circa 16 giorni dopo il rilascio. I tassi di ricattura ottenuti variano tra 3,3–5,1% a RM e 3,4–13,4% a PD. La maggior parte delle femmine sono state ricatturate gravide e nei primi 8 giorni dal rilascio. Questa osservazione, in accordo anche con i risultati di esperimenti di deposizione eseguiti in contemporanea, consente di concludere che quanto osservato si riferisce principalmente alla dispersione delle femmine in cerca di un sito di ovideposizione, al termine del ciclo gonotrofico attivato dal pasto sangue offerto loro prima del rilascio. Le femmine sono state ricatturate prevalentemente a 50-200 metri dal sito rilascio a RM e 0-150 m a PD. La distanza media percorsa è stata 105 - 139 m nell’area di RM e 68 – 110 m in quella di PD. In entrambi i siti le femmine hanno dimostrato di essere in grado di raggiungere il limite dell’area di studio (distanza massima osservata = 230 m a RM, 464 m a PD). Nel complesso, questi risultati consentono una prima valutazione delle capacità di dispersione delle femmine di Ae. albopictus in Europa e dimostrano l’abilità di questa specie di spostarsi per centinaia di metri in pochi giorni, anche in condizioni di ampia disponibilità di siti di ovideposizione. E’ pertanto possibile ipotizzare che le distanze coperte potrebbero aumentare sotto forti pressioni legate, ad esempio, alla scarsità di siti di ovideposizione o di ospiti su cui compiere il pasto di sangue. Questa conclusione è particolarmente importante nella pianificazione di attività di controllo in Italia, così come in altri Paesi europei, soprattutto qualora si miri ad interrompere la trasmissione di agenti patogeni nel corso di epidemie di arbovirus.

Abstract

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous noncoding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression by binding the 3′ noncoding region of the messenger RNA targets inducing their cleavage or blocking the protein translation. They play important roles in multiple biological and metabolic processes, including developmental timing, signal transduction, and cell maintenance and differentiation. Their deregulation can predispose to diseases and cancer. miRNA expression has been demonstrated to be deregulated in many types of human tumors, including thyroid cancers, and could be responsible for tumor initiation and progression. In this paper we reviewed the available data on miRNA deregulation in different thyroid tumors and describe the putative role of miRNA in thyroid cancer development.

Abstract

A large amount of genetic studies have clearly demonstrated the existence of a genetic susceptibility to Paget's disease of bone (PDB). Although the disease is genetically heterogeneous, the SQSTM1/p62 gene, encoding a protein with a pathophysiological role in both osteoclast differentiation and activity, has been found worldwide to harbour germline mutations in most of the PDB patients from geographically distant populations originating from different areas of Europe, both in sporadic and familial cases.Thus, SQSTM1/p62 gene mutations may confer an increased lifetime risk of developing PDB.Several different genotype-phenotype analyses have shown a high penetrance for such mutations. These results suggest the opportunity to perform genetic testing in affected individuals and then, after the identification of a SQSTM1/p62 gene germline mutation, in their relatives as a real and concrete strategy to increase the diagnostic sensitivity in most of the asymptomatic mutant carriers. However, it is of note to underlie that an incomplete penetrance for SQSTM1/p62 gene mutations has also been reported.In light of all these contradictory evidences, a review on whether, when and why apply the DNA test to those subjects, its interpretation and clinical application is necessary. In fact, a growing number of preventive care options are now available to affected patients and families and the process of systematically assessing risk is becoming increasingly important for both patients and physicians.

Abstract

Background: Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasms of the pancreas (SPNs) are uncommon tumours usually frequent in young women. Although the pathogenesis of SPNs is uncertain a potential influence of the sex hormone milieu on the biology of these tumours has been suggested. The controversial expression of oestrogen receptors (ERs) in SPNs, provide a rationale for studying the effects of oestrogenic molecules on SPN development. Methods: The expression of a large series of hormonal ligands and receptors was evaluated in tissue specimens and in a primary cell culture (SPNC), obtained from a SPN in young female patient. The effects of 17β-oestradiol (17βE2), ICI 182,780 and tamoxifen (Tam) on cell replication and growth were examined. Results: We have established SPNC primary line. Immunocytochemical analysis was positive for vimentin, cyclin D1 and β-catenin and negative for cytokeratin, CD10 and neuroendocrine markers, in line with the immunostaining features of the tumoral tissue. Expression of ERα, ERβ and progesterone mRNAs was demonstrated in SPNC and tumor tissue. A proliferative and antiproliferative action of 17βE2 and Tam respectively were proved in SPNC. Conclusions: In conclusion, we provide the first direct evidence that oestrogenic molecules can influence proliferation of SPNC, offering future strategies in the control of this neoplasia via selective ER modulators.

Abstract

The thyroid cancer is a rare oncological entity, representing no more than 1% of all human malignant neoplasms. Recently, it has been demonstrated a sharp increase in incidence of differentiated thyroid carcinoma, equally occurring in both sexes. So far, multiple genetic alterations have been identified in differentiated thyroid carcinoma, leading to investigate the clinical utility of genetic studies. In particular, molecular genetic approaches searching for gene mutations in the material collected by fine needle ago-biopsy may have a particular utility in small nodules and in those specimens with an indeterminate cytology. The expansion of knowledge about genetic mutations occurring in different thyroid tumors has characterized recent years, allowing the identification of a correlation between specific mutations and phenotypic characteristics of thyroid cancers, essential for their prognosis. This review will briefly report on the histological features and the new entity represented by thyroid microcarcinoma and will focus on both environmental and genetic aspects associated with the occurrence of thyroid cancer.
