Abstract

N-Acetylneuraminic acid aldolase (NeuAcA) (EC 4.1.3.3) is a pyruvate-dependent class I aldolase that catalyzes the reversible aldol cleavage of N-acetylneuraminic acid to form N-acetyl-D-mannosamine and pyruvate. The synthetic activity of this enzyme has been applied to the preparation of many sialic acid analogues. In this report, we demonstrate the ability of NeuAcA from Clostridium perfringens to use 2-oxoethyl substituted nucleobases as unusual acceptor substrates to perform aldol additions. In this way, novel acyclic nucleoside analogues bearing a further derivatizable 4-hydroxy-2-oxo butyrate skeleton were prepared in good yields. Fil: Nigro, Mariano J.. Abstract

Acyclic nucleosides are potential antiviral and antitumor agents. Abstract

Currently, further research on the valorization of lignin is needed to shift biorefineries from a conceptual basis to profitable practice. Providing global warming is a major concern as well, the use of lignin as the sole precursor to elaborate materials with thermal energy storage (TES) applications is especially welcomed in the search for new sustainable solutions. To this end, the preparation of on-demand macroporous carbon foams from calcium lignosulfonate (CaLS) by pyrolysis is described herein, and their capability to microencapsulate phase change materials (PCMs) dedicated to the passive refrigeration of buildings by TES is further assessed as a proof of concept. The as-produced CaLS-based foams were found to be efficient containers for this purpose, displaying any appreciable leakage of PCMs. Furthermore, the thermal properties of the final materials were satisfactory as well, showing that the support does not affect the PCM performance negatively. Considering the process to produce such materials is not only straightforward but also relies on an inexpensive, widely available carbon precursor, it is expected that it serves as a starting point for pilot studies in TES projects. Abstract

2-deoxyribose 5-phosphate (DR5P) is a key intermediate in the biocatalyzed preparation of deoxyribonucleosides. Therefore, DR5P production by means of simpler, cleaner, and economic pathways becomes highly interesting. One strategy involves the use of bacterial whole cells containing DR5P aldolase as biocatalyst for the aldol addition between acetaldehyde and D: -glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate or glycolytic intermediates that in situ generate the acceptor substrate. In this work, diverse microorganisms capable of synthesizing DR5P were selected by screening several bacteria genera. In particular, Erwinia carotovora ATCC 33260 was identified as a new biocatalyst that afforded 14.1-mM DR5P starting from a cheap raw material like glucose.

Abstract

Sulfide oxidase activity ofStreptomyces genus is reported here for the first time. Three Streptomyces strains were selected as new tools to access to enantioenriched R- and S-dialkyl sulfoxides. The bacterial screening was carried out using cyclohexyl methyl sulfide as model substrate.Both sulfoxide antipodes were obtained in a one-pot, time-dependent biotransformation employing S. phaeochromogenes NCIMB 11741 as biocatalyst. S. flavogriseus ATCC 33331produced mainly the S-enantiomer, while S. hiroshimensis ATCC 27429 yielded enantiopure R-cyclohexyl methyl sulfoxide. Fil: Mascotti, María Laura.
