A recently discovered phase-change metal–organic framework (MOF) adsorbent is F4_MIL-140A(Ce), based on Ce$^{IV}$ and tetrafluoroterephthalate. This MOF displays a non-hysteretic step-shaped CO$_2$ adsorption isotherm, reaching saturation in conditions of temperature and pressure compatible with real life application in post-combustion carbon capture, biogas upgrading and acetylene purification. Such peculiar behaviour is responsible for the exceptional CO$_2$/N$_2$ selectivity and reverse CO$_2$/C$_2$H$_2$ selectivity of F4_MIL-140A(Ce). Here, we combine data obtained from a wide pool of characterisation techniques – namely gas sorption analysis, in situ infrared spectroscopy, in situ powder X-ray diffraction, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, multinuclear solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and adsorption microcalorimetry – with periodic density functional theory simulations to provide evidence for the existence of a unique cooperative CO$_2$ adsorption mechanism in F4_MIL-140A(Ce). Such mechanism involves the concerted rotation of perfluorinated aromatic rings when a threshold partial pressure of CO$_2$ is reached, opening the gate towards an adsorption site where CO$_2$ interacts with both open metal sites and the fluorine atoms of the linker., Published by RSC, London [u.a.]

Hot spring outflow channels provide geochemical gradients that are reflected in microbial community compositions. In many hot spring outflows, there is a distinct visual demarcation as the community transitions from predominantly chemotrophs to having visible pigments from phototrophs. It has been hypothesized that this transition to phototrophy, known as the photosynthetic fringe, is a result of the pH, temperature, and/or sulfide concentration gradients in the hot spring outflows. Here, we explicitly evaluated the predictive capability of geochemistry in determining the location of the photosynthetic fringe in hot spring outflows. A total of 46 samples were taken from 12 hot spring outflows in Yellowstone National Park that spanned pH values from 1.9 to 9.0 and temperatures from 28.9 to 92.2°C. Sampling locations were selected to be equidistant in geochemical space above and below the photosynthetic fringe based on linear discriminant analysis. Although pH, temperature, and total sulfide concentrations have all previously been cited as determining factors for microbial community composition, total sulfide did not correlate with microbial community composition with statistical significance in non-metric multidimensional scaling. In contrast, pH, temperature, ammonia, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon, and dissolved oxygen did correlate with the microbial community composition with statistical significance. Additionally, there was observed statistical significance between beta diversity and the relative position to the photosynthetic fringe with sites above the photosynthetic fringe being significantly different from those at or below the photosynthetic fringe according to canonical correspondence analysis. However, in combination, the geochemical parameters considered in this study only accounted for 35% of the variation in microbial community composition determined by redundancy analysis. In co-occurrence network analyses, each clique correlated with either pH and/or temperature, whereas sulfide concentrations only correlated with individual nodes. These results indicate that there is a complex interplay between geochemical variables and the position of the photosynthetic fringe that cannot be fully explained by statistical correlations with the individual geochemical variables included in this study.

The doctoral thesis was created by the will to develop and analyse the work experience of about 20 years as a social worker in the third sector in the ministerial projects of "Protection and Emergence of the victims of trafficking and smuggling and sexual exploitation, working, begging and illegal trade in organs ", then intertwined - with the now known ENA / Emergency North Africa - in the coordination of CAS Reception Structures (Extraordinary Reception Centers headed by the Prefectures) and Sprar (Protection System for Asylum Seekers and Refugees to the Ministry of the Interior today SIPROIMI) for foreign minors and adults. During these years of experience in the field I have come into direct contact with the "inhabitants" of these "places" observing roles and structures, imposed, arbitrary, static and changeable on which I have had to act myself resistance practices in order not to get stuck in the countless "revolving doors" that the "Trafficking and Asylum System" imposes and disposes. I then started by identifying the context - the liberal system - where the knowledge and powers - of the deputy hospitalising deputies for immigrants - have undisturbed the laws of governmentality behaviour of individuals who live - be they social workers, asylum seekers and refugees and victims of trafficking. In this path I have been able to experience both as a social worker and as a researcher and also as a solidarity as these devices are �machines producing discourses and knowledge, protocols, practices, structures and regimes of truth that (re) inevitably and intentionally form the subjectivities that are involved�Foucault, 2004). In conclusion I will try to show how the relocation (of work, migrants, services, etc.), the introduction of foreign labor capable of creating "useful reserve armies" (Sassen, 2015) with which to blackmail the indigenous labor force (exploited and exploitable due to precarious legal, housing, health and human conditions) and the privatization of every aspect of collective life (such as health, transport networks - a dear subject having experienced the collapse of Ponte Morandi) have contributed to severing the relationship with territory destroying any bond that is not of a mercantile and / or economic type.

Passive seismic methods have been proven successful in recentyears at retrieving information about the large-scale structure ofa sedimentary basin. These methods are based on ambient noise recordings,and local and distant (teleseismic) earthquake data. In particular, ithas been previously observed that the arrival time of teleseismicP-waves recorded inside a sedimentary basin shows time delaysand polarization that both strongly depend on the basin propertiesand structure. In this paper, we present a new methodology fordetermining seismic P-wave velocity in a sedimentary basin, based on the timedelay of a teleseismic P-wave travelling through the low-velocitybasin infill, with respect to a teleseismic wave recorded outside thebasin. The new methodology is developed in a Bayesian frameworkand, thus, it includes estimates of the uncertainties of theP-wave velocities. For this study, we exploit synchronous recordingsof teleseismic P-wave arrivals at a dense linear array ofbroadband seismic stations, using data from two teleseismic events comingfrom two different incoming angles. The results obtained by the newproposed methodology are successfully compared to classicalcross-correlation measurements, and are used to infer properties of a sedimentarybasin, such as the basin bounding fault's geometry and the average P-wave velocity ofthe sedimentary basinfill.

Cement is the binder at the base of one of the most important building material: the concrete. Nowadays, formulations based on reactive periclase (MgO) [1,2] constitute a promising emerging technology toward eco-sustainable binders, with reduced CO2 emissions as compared to the traditional CaO-based cements. [3,4] In the presence of water, MgO/silicate mixtures hydrate and form a binder phase, M-S-H (magnesium silicate hydrate), a colloidal gel analogue to calcium silicate hydrate, C-S-H, present in traditional Portland cements, but with inferior mechanical properties. The aim of the present study was the investigation of the hydration reaction and of the microstructure development of pastes prepared by mixing Portland cement and MgO/SiO2 blend. Different percentages of CaO- and MgO-based binders were evaluated to explore the possibility of preparing pastes that could in principle combine the optimal mechanical properties of calcium based cement with the ecological features of MgO-based cement. The hydration kinetics of the mixtures were investigated by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Concurrently, the pastes were characterized by means of a multi-scale approach and the formation of hydrated phases was studied by Thermogravimetric Analysis, Fourier Transform IR spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction. The structural properties of all samples were investigated by solid state 29Si-NMR. Finally, the morphology of the pastes has been studied by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results showed that in the mixed pastes both C-S-H and M-S-H binder gel phases form, but, as evidenced in Figure 1, their domains remain segregate in different regions. The results evidenced that the kinetics of hydration in the mixed samples is dominated by MgO/SiO2 hydration in the first period, while the diffusional stage is mostly dependent on the Portland cement presence. Moreover, mutual effects on the structure of the hydration products occur in the mixed pastes. OVSICORI A temporary seismic network, consisting of 23 broadband and six short-period stations, wasinstalled in a dense network at Turrialba Volcano, Costa Rica, between 8 March and 4 May 2011. During thistime 513 long-period (LP) events were observed. Due to their pulse-like waveforms, the hypothesis thatthe events are generated by a slow-failure mechanism, based on a recent new model by Bean et al. (2014), istested. A significant number (107) of the LPs are jointly inverted for their source locations and mechanisms,using full-waveform moment tensor inversion. The locations are mostly shallow, with depths < 800 m belowthe active Southwest Crater. The results of the decompositions of the obtained moment tensor solutions showcomplex source mechanisms, composed of high proportions of isotropic and low, but seemingly significant,proportions of compensated linear vector dipole and double-couple components. It is demonstrated that thiscan be explained as mode I tensile fracturing with a strong shear component. The source mechanism is furtherinvestigated by exploring scaling laws within the data. The LPs recorded follow relationships very similar tothose of conventional earthquakes, exhibiting frequency-magnitude and corner frequency versus magnituderelationships that can be explained by brittle failure. Acanthus mollis (Acanthaceae), Achillea ligustica, Artemisia arborescens and Inula viscosa (Asteraceae) are used in Southern Italy against psoriasis and other skin diseases that occur with an imbalanced production of eicosanoids. We here assessed their in vitro effects upon 5-, 12-, 15-LOX and COX-1 enzymes as well as NFκB activation in intact cells as their possible therapeutic targets. All methanol crude extracts inhibited both 5-LOX and COX-1 activities under 200 μg/mL, without significant effects on the 12-LOX pathway or any relevant in vitro free radical scavenging activity. NFκB activation was prevented by all extracts but A. mollis. Interestingly, A. ligustica, A. arborescens and A. mollis increased the biosynthesis of 15(S)-HETE, an anti-inflammatory eicosanoid. A. ligustica (IC50 = 49.5 μg/mL) was superior to Silybum marianum (IC50 = 147.8 μg/mL), which we used as antipsoriatic herbal medicine of reference. Its n-hexane, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate fractions had also inhibitory effects on the LTB4 biosynthesis (IC50s = 9.6, 20.3 and 68 μg/mL, respectively) evidencing that the apolar extracts of A. ligustica are promising active herbal ingredients for future phytotherapeutical products targeting psoriasis., Facultad de Ciencias Médicas

Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) is a volcanic island dominated by the Teide-Pico Viejo complex, with a summit height of 3718 m. After renewed signs of activity starting in 2004, an active seismic experiment was performed in 2007 to derive a tomographic model and identify seismic anomalies possibly associated with the magmatic system. To complement the tomography, a double beam-forming analysis is applied on two orthogonal 2-D profiles crossing the island to look for evidence of the existence of a magma chamber. Numerical tests allow us to investigate the best measure of coherency between traces, and show that the correlation and nth root semblance methods give better results than the classical semblance. They also demonstrate that the technique is reliable for locating scattering structures at depth, even when the velocity model is imperfect. Applying this technique to the Tenerife data set, two main anomalies can be identified: one at approximately 7–9 km b.s.l. depth in the northern part of the island, and one shallower (1–4 km b.s.l.) beneath the main summit. These structures could be linked to the magmatic system, in good agreement with previous studies. The shallowest one may be the phonolitic storage area feeding the Teide-Pico Viejo complex, while the deepest structure may be related to the basaltic system. The canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a mosquito-borne parasitic nematode whose range is extending due to climate change. In a four-dimensional analysis involving HPLC, MALDI-TOF–MS and MS/MS in combination with chemical and enzymatic digestions, we here reveal an N-glycome of unprecedented complexity. We detect N-glycans of up to 7000 Da, which contain long fucosylated HexNAc-based repeats, as well as glucuronylated structures. While some modifications including LacdiNAc, chitobiose, α1,3-fucose and phosphorylcholine are familiar, anionic N-glycans have previously not been reported in nematodes. Glycan array data show that the neutral glycans are preferentially recognised by IgM in dog sera or by mannose binding lectin when antennal fucose and phosphorylcholine residues are removed; this pattern of reactivity is reversed for mammalian C-reactive protein, which can in turn be bound by the complement component C1q. Thereby, the N-glycans of D. immitis contain features which may either mediate immunomodulation of the host or confer the ability to avoid immune surveillance., Nature Communications, 10, ISSN:2041-1723

Language and communication disruptions in schizophrenia are at the center of a large body of investigation. Yet, the remediation of such disruptions is still in its infancy. Here we targeted what is known to be one of the most damaged language domains in schizophrenia, namely pragmatics, by conducting a pragmatics-centered intervention with a randomized controlled trial design and assessing also durability and generalization. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study with these characteristics.Inspired by the Gricean account of natural language use, we tailored a novel treatment addressing the pragmatics of communication (PragmaCom) and we tested its efficacy in a sample of individuals with schizophrenia randomized to the experimental group or to an active control group. The primary outcome with respect to the efficacy of the PragmaCom was measured by changes in pragmatic abilities (as evaluated with the global score of the Assessment of Pragmatic Abilities and Cognitive Substrates test) from baseline to 12 weeks and at 3-month follow-up. The secondary outcome was measured by changes in metaphor comprehension, abstract thinking, and global functioning from baseline to 12 weeks and at 3-month follow-up.Relative to the control group, at post-test the PragmaCom group showed greater and enduring improvement in global pragmatic skills and in metaphor comprehension. At follow-up, these improvements persisted and the PragmaCom exerted beneficial effects also on functioning.Despite the limited sample size, we believe that these findings offer initial yet encouraging evidence of the possibility to improve pragmatic skills with a theoretically grounded approach and to obtain durable and clinically relevant benefits. We argue that it is time that therapeutic efforts embrace communicative dysfunctions in order to improve illness outcome.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a serious threat to human health, as well as to food-producing animals and the environment. AMR is a growing phenomenon, while antibiotic efficacy against human and zoonotic infections is decreasing [1]. Salmonellosis is the 2nd most common zoonosis in Europe, and recent studies highlight multidrug resistance (MDR) of numerous Salmonella strains to the most commonly used antimicrobial agents [2]. EOs could meet some of the strategic objectives outlined in the WHO's Global Action Plan on AMR. Salmonella is the most frequently isolated bacterial agent in food-borne infections. Food-producing animals are the main reservoirs of infection, with animal-derived foods (meat, eggs and milk) sources of transmission. The aim of the study was to evaluate antibacterial efficacy of single EOs (Lavandula intermedia and Origanum vulgare) and of GR-OLI (25% commercial solution of an unknown mixture of Eucalyptus globulus, Satureja montana, Citrus aurantium var. dulcis, Thymus vulgaris, Melaleuca alternifolia, Citrus limon, Lavanda hybrida, Melaleuca cajeputi, Thymus capitatus) against Salmonella (29 strains) isolated from swine and poultry farms and against beneficial microorganisms used as probiotics, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, S. boulardii, Enterococcus faecium and Bifidobacterium thermoacidophilum (6 strains). EO efficacy was evaluated through MIC analysis according to EUCAST guidelines [3]. The action of scalar concentrations between 2% v / v and 0.06% v / v for OEs and between 8% v / v and 0.25% v / v for GR-OLI was evaluated. Moreover, the EOs with sub-MIC values capable of reducing bacterial growth were tested in CaCo-2 cell adhesion and biofilm experiments using Salmonella (12 strains). GR-OLI and O. vulgare proved more effective than L. intermedia against multidrug-resistant Salmonella strains. The EOs evaluated had higher MIC values against probiotics than against Salmonella. GR-OLI also decreased biofilm formation and reduced adhesion of Salmonella strains to CaCo-2 cells. GR-OLI showed higher efficacy against multidrug-resistant Salmonella strains than against drug-sensitive Salmonella strains. Our data on the evaluated EOs require further investigation and confirmation, also exploring the possibility of resistance development. Background Schizophrenia is a highly heterogeneous disorder, and despite extensive research progress approximately 30% of patients with schizophrenia show poor response to first-line antipsychotics, denoted as treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Meta-analytic evidence showed that clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic for TRS, although 40% of TRS patients do not respond even to clozapine (ultra-treatment-resistant schizophrenia -UTR). Recent studies indicated that TRS is neurobiologically and categorically distinct from treatment-responsive schizophrenia, being associated with elevated glutamate levels in the anterior cingulate cortex and unaltered striatal dopamine synthesis. Moreover, the striking majority of TRS patients do not respond to first-line antipsychotic therapy since disease onset and present more severe cognitive deficits since first episode of psychosis, further suggesting the presence of a distinct and more disrupted neurobiological substrate. It is widely known that cognitive impairment is a core feature of schizophrenia and determines a significant detrimental impact on long-term functional outcome, which represents the ultimate treatment goal. However, despite the central role of cognition in schizophrenia, to date no study has investigated longitudinal cognitive outcome among TRS patients. Based on these evidences, the aim of this study is to evaluate longitudinal cognitive trajectories in a sample of clinically stabilized patients with schizophrenia, stratified according to antipsychotic response. We hypothesized that treatment-resistance is associated with a more severe long-term cognitive decline. Methods We enrolled 93 patients with schizophrenia (DSM-V), stratified as follows: 32 first-line responders (FLR), 42 TRS and 19 UTR. Cognition was longitudinally assessed at baseline and at least after 6 years of follow-up (mean: 9.3±2.8 years) using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS). From BACS subscores we calculated for each patient a Cognitive Index, as a measure of overall cognitive functioning. In order to quantify global cognitive functioning changes during the course of illness, we estimated effect size score for Cognitive Index using Cohen’s d. Finally, General linear Models (GLM) were performed with overall cognitive index effect size as dependent variable, treatment (FLR/TRS/UTR) as categorical variable and age, duration of illness and education as covariates. Results The first GLM (FLR vs TRS+UTR) showed a significant main effect of treatment (F=7.34, p=0.01), with worse cognitive outcome between resistant patients. Consistently, the second GLM (FLR/TRS/UTR) resulted significant as well (F=17.90, p Discussion This is the first study to longitudinally evaluate cognitive trajectories of patients with schizophrenia according to their antipsychotic response. We showed that treatment resistance is associated with a more severe cognitive decline, with worse outcome among UTR patients. These data suggest that greater severity of treatment resistance in schizophrenia is associated with greater cognitive impairment, possibly due to the presence of a distinct and more disrupted neurobiological substrate that affects both cognition and antipsychotic response. These findings further highlight the necessity of early individuation and tailored pharmacological treatment for TRS patients, in order to improve long-term clinical, cognitive and functional outcome.

Background Treatment resistant schizophrenia (TRS) affects up to 30% of patients with psychosis and is a major cause of disability. Although clozapine is the only indicated drug for TRS, it is largely underused, partially due to its life-threatening adverse effects (AEs) as agranulocytosis and myocarditis. However, clozapine treatment is also burdened by other AEs as constipation, hypersalivation, postural hypotension, tachycardia, metabolic abnormalities and weight gain. In recent years many efforts have been made to outline clinical and neurobiological characteristics of TRS. Although sex is one of the most relevant factors accountable for the clinical variability of schizophrenia, literature on sex differences in clozapine’s tolerability is still limited. Studies showed that women experience more often than men weight gain, hyperglycemia and constipation. Conversely, hypertension and dyslipidemia seem more frequent in men. Based on these premises, our study aimed to investigate sex differences in prevalence of clozapine’s chronic AEs in TRS patients. Methods We performed an observational cross-sectional study with TRS on 147 patients, 93 males and 54 females with at least two-year clozapine treatment. We assessed metabolic status and AEs by interviews, collection of clinical data (BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure and heart rate) and blood tests including lipid profile, fasting glucose and HbA1c. Chi-square analysis was used to investigate the association between sex and clozapine AEs (tachycardia, postural hypotension, constipation, hypersalivation and metabolic syndrome). Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to further analyze the relationship between sex and AEs considering the role of possible confounding factors as plasmatic concentration, oral dosage, number of daily administration, age and duration of therapy. Results We found a higher prevalence of tachycardia in males (p=0.034, χ2=4.49) and of orthostatic hypotension (p=0.01, χ2=6.70) and constipation (p=0.01, χ2=6.45) in females. Logistic regressions showed that male sex was the only significant predictor of tachycardia (p=0.01), while female sex predicted hypotension (p=0.04) and constipation (p=0.03). Although no differences emerged for hypersalivation and metabolic syndrome (MetS), Chi-square showed significant differences in prevalence for two MetS criteria: hypertriglyceridemia (56.94% in men, 29.79% in women, p=0.003, χ2=8.43) and central obesity (83.33% in men, 97.44% in women, p=0.03, χ2=4.69). Discussion Consistent with previous literature, our study showed sex differences in prevalence of chronic clozapine’s AEs. Although perceived as minor AEs, hypotension, constipation and tachycardia could affect patient’s quality of life, cause treatment discontinuation or increase mortality. In particular, postural hypotension and tachycardia have been associated with an increased risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular events in the general population. Clozapine-related constipation can develop into full-blown ileus in up to 2.1% of cases, a higher, more durable and more dangerous risk than agranulocytosis. Finally, hypertriglyceridemia and central obesity are well known cardiovascular risk factors. Our study suggests clinicians should carefully monitor for clozapine’s AEs also considering sex, in order to early detect them, promptly treat them and prevent severe complications. Literature suggest some of the sex differences reported in schizophrenia may be due to the protective role of estrogens. Further studies, with a particular attention to hormonal status, could contribute to better understand the pathophysiology of sex differences in TRS and define a personalized therapeutic approach.

Copahue volcano is an active stratovolcano, with a hot, acidic, Crater Lake.This is the main expression of the magmatic-hydrothermal system. Theproperties of the lake water respond to chemical and physical changes in thesubsurface hydrothermal or magmatic system. In this region, significant seismicactivity at the beginning of 2004 was recorded. After these events, severalsurface manifestations were recognised; the temperature of crater lakedecreased, the composition of springs changed and surface deformation onthe northeastern flank of the volcanic edifice were recorded. Volcanic eraptions are preceded by mass migration through a subsurface fracture network. Movements of multiphase fluids are geenerally detected at the surface in terms of changes in geophysical (ground deformation, seismicity) and geochemical observablles.
