In this paper, first musical compositions are presented, which are created using the mathematical counterpoint theory of Guerino Mazzola and his collaborators. These compositions also use the RUBATO(R) software's components for counterpoint constructions. The present work aims at opening new "exotic" directions of contrapuntal composition in non-Fuxian worlds. Drawing inspiration from both the classical Guerino Mazzola's symmetry-based model for first-species counterpoint (one note against one note) and Johann Joseph Fux's "Gradus ad Parnassum", we propose an extension for second-species (two notes against one note).

We present statistical evidence for the importance of the "mystic chord" in Scriabin's Piano Sonata No. 5, Op. 53, from a computational and mathematical counterpoint perspective. This paper introduces an extension of the Rubato Composer software's BigBang rubette module for gestural composition. The extension enables composers and improvisers to operate BigBang using the Leap Motion controller, which uses two cameras to detect hand motions in three-dimensional space. The low latency and high precision of the device make it a good fit for BigBang's functionality, which is based on immediate visual and auditive feedback. With the new extensions, users can define an infinite variety of musical objects, such as oscillators, pitches, chord progressions, or frequency modulators, in real-time and transform them in order to generate more complex musical structures on any level of abstraction.

Destinés en premier lieu aux musicologues et aux musiciens, les quatre sujets ont été choisis selon des critères spécifiques visant à thématiser les enjeux musicaux de la pensée mathématique. L'ouvrage reprend ainsi ces quatre thèmes centraux, à savoir la composition vue dans la perspective de l'analyse créative de Pierre Boulez, le contrepoint fuxien modélisé selon les principes du dévissage de l'identité issu des théories d'Alexandre Grothendieck, l'interprétation conçue comme déformation paramétrique induite par les opérateurs interprétatifs selon Theodor W. Adorno et finalement la gestuelle en musique, formalisée à l'aide d'équations physiques classiques mais aussi grâce à la topologie algébrique. Ce dernier thème dépasse la facticité et crée le lien de la réflexion avec l'action musicale proprement dite, comme l'auteur le montre en se référant aux idées de Gilles Châtelet. L'objectif principal des quatre leçons était de démontrer non pas la puissance autonome de la méthode mathématique, mais le service qu'elle peut rendre à une compréhension approfondie de ce phénomène mystérieux qu'est la musique. Cette ambition implique de garder en ligne de mire l'intérêt musicologique, ce qui sous-entend que cette démarche ne s'attachera pas au développement d'outils mathématiques dont l'application à la musicologie dépasse la compétence traditionnelle des musicologues. Le contexte du cours suggérait, au contraire, la mise en relief de l'interaction musique-mathématique au sein du domaine de la musicologie. Ce choix est d'autant plus important que la puissance de la pensée mathématique peut permettre d'envisager sous un angle nouveau certains phénomènes fondamentaux de la musique.

Il punto di partenza di questo lavoro e l'interpretazione delle topologie di Grothendieck nel linguaggio dei sistemi relazionali (cfr. [5]); cio permette uno studio aritmetico di tali topologie. Attraverso nuove tecniche, qui introdotte, si ottengono risultati non privi di interesse, tra i quali una caratterizzazione degli spazi topologici noetheriani, ed ulteriori strutture topologiche di tipo locale (siti tangenti), per le quali vengono dimostrate numerose proprieta. Vengono, infine, date alcune applicazioni alla teoria degli schemi, utilizzando il funtore inviluppo affine. The starting point of this paper is the interpretation of Grothendieck's topologies in the language of relational systems (cfr. [5]); this permits an arithmetical study of these topologies. By applying new techniques introduced here, we have achieved interesting results. These include a new characterization of Noetherian topological spaces, and further topological structures of local type (tangent sites) for which we have shown numerous properties. Finally, we have used the affine-envelope functor to illustrate some applications to the theory of schemes.
