A lower-than-solar elemental nitrogen content has been demonstrated for several comets, including 1P/Halley and 67P/C-G with independent in situ measurements of volatile and refractory budgets. The recently discovered semi-refractory ammonium salts in 67P/C-G are thought to be the missing nitrogen reservoir in comets. The thermal desorption of ammonium salts from cometary dust particles leads to their decomposition into ammonia and a corresponding acid. The NH$_{3}$/H$_{2}$O ratio is expected to increase with decreasing heliocentric distance with evidence for this in near-infrared observations. NH$_{3}$ has been claimed to be more extended than expected for a nuclear source. Here, the aim is to constrain the NH$_{3}$/H$_{2}$O ratio in comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) during its July 2020 passage. OH emission from comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was monitored for 2 months with NRT and observed from GBT on 24 July and 11 August 2020. Contemporaneously with the 24 July 2020 OH observations, the NH$_{3}$ hyperfine lines were targeted with GBT. The concurrent GBT and NRT observations allowed the OH quenching radius to be determined at $\left(5.96\pm0.10\right)\times10^{4}$ km on 24 July 2020, which is important for accurately deriving $Q(\text{OH})$. C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was a highly active comet with $Q(\text{H}_{2}\text{O}) \approx 2\times10^{30}$ molec s$^{-1}$ one day before perihelion. Using data from the GOTHAM (GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting for Aromatic Molecules) survey, we report the first astronomical detection of the C10H- anion. The astronomical observations also provided the necessary data to refine the spectroscopic parameters of C10H-. From the velocity stacked data and the matched filter response, C10H- is detected at >9{\sigma} confidence level at a column density of 4.04e11 cm-2. A dedicated search for the C10H radical was also conducted towards TMC-1. In this case, the stacked molecular emission of C10H was detected at a ~3.2{\sigma} confidence interval at a column density of 2.02e11 cm-2. As the inventory of interstellar molecules continues to grow, the gulf between small species, whose individual rotational lines can be observed with radio telescopes, and large ones, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) best studied in bulk via infrared and optical observations, is slowly being bridged. Understanding the connection between these two molecular reservoirs is critical to understanding the interstellar carbon cycle, but will require pushing the boundaries of how far we can probe molecular complexity while still retaining observational specificity. Toward this end, we present a method for detecting and characterizing new molecular species in single-dish observations toward sources with sparse line spectra. We have applied this method to data from the ongoing GOTHAM (GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting Aromatic Molecules) Green Bank Telescope (GBT) large program, discovering six new interstellar species. Benzonitrile ($c$-C$_6$H$_5$CN), a polar proxy for benzene ($c$-C$_6$H$_6$}), has the potential to serve as a highly convenient radio probe for aromatic chemistry, provided this ring can be found in other astronomical sources beyond the molecule-rich prestellar cloud TMC-1 where it was first reported by McGuire et al. in 2018. Here we present radio astronomical evidence of benzonitrile in four additional pre-stellar, and possibly protostellar, sources: Serpens 1A, Serpens 1B, Serpens 2, and MC27/L1521F. These detections establish benzonitrile is not unique to TMC-1; rather aromatic chemistry appears to be widespread throughout the earliest stages of star formation, likely persisting at least to the initial formation of a protostar. The abundance of benzonitrile far exceeds predictions from models which well reproduce the abundances of carbon chains, such as HC$_7$N, a cyanpolyyne with the same heavy atoms, indicating the chemistry responsible for planar carbon structures (as opposed to linear ones) in primordial sources is favorable but not well understood. The abundance of benzonitrile relative to carbon-chain molecules displays sizable variations between sources within the Taurus and Serpens clouds, implying the importance of physical conditions and initial elemental reservoirs of the clouds themselves., Comment: To Appear in Nature Astronomy, 53 Pages, 15 Figures, 12 Tables

Much like six-membered rings, five-membered rings are ubiquitous in organic chemistry, frequently serving as the building blocks for larger molecules, including many of biochemical importance. From a combination of laboratory rotational spectroscopy and a sensitive spectral line survey in the radio band toward the starless cloud core TMC-1, we report the astronomical detection of 1-cyano-1,3-cyclopentadiene, $c$-C$_5$H$_5$CN}, a highly polar, cyano derivative of cyclopentadiene, $c$-C$_5$H$_6$. The derived abundance of $c$-C$_5$H$_5$CN} is far greater than predicted from astrochemical models which well reproduce the abundance of many carbon chains. This finding implies either an important production mechanism or a large reservoir of aromatic material may need to be considered. The apparent absence of its closely-related isomer, 2-cyano-1,3-cyclopentadiene, may arise from its lower stability or be indicative of a more selective pathway for formation of the 1-cyano isomer, perhaps one starting from acyclic precursors. A longstanding problem in astrochemistry is the inability of many current models to account for missing sulfur content. Many relatively simple species that may be good candidates to sequester sulfur have not been measured experimentally at the high spectral resolution necessary to enable radioastronomical identification. On the basis of new laboratory data, we report searches for the rotational lines in the microwave, millimeter, and submillimeter regions of the sulfur-containing hydrocarbon HCCSH. This simple species would appear to be a promising candidate for detection in space owing to the large dipole moment along its b-inertial axis, and because the bimolecular reaction between two highly abundant astronomical fragments (CCH and SH radicals) may be rapid. An inspection of multiple line surveys from the centimeter to the far-infrared toward a range of sources from dark clouds to high-mass star-forming regions, however, resulted in nondetections. An analogous search for the lowest-energy isomer, H₂CCS, is presented for comparison, and also resulted in nondetections. Typical upper limits on the abundance of both species relative to hydrogen are 10^(−9)–10^(−10). We thus conclude that neither isomer is a major reservoir of interstellar sulfur in the range of environments studied. Both species may still be viable candidates for detection in other environments or at higher frequencies, providing laboratory frequencies are available.

International audience; Astrophysics advances, in part, through laboratory astrophysics studies of the underlying processes controlling the observed properties of the Cosmos. These studies encompass both theoretical and experimental research. Robust support for laboratory astrophysics is critically needed to maximize the scientific return of astronomical observations.

We report the detection of NaCl, KCl, and their $^{37}$Cl and $^{41}$K isotopologues toward the disk around Orion SrcI. About 60 transitions of these molecules were identified. This is the first detection of these molecules in the interstellar medium not associated with the ejecta of evolved stars. It is also the first ever detection of the vibrationally excited states of these lines in the ISM above v = 1, with firm detections up to v = 6. The salt emission traces the region just above the continuum disk, possibly forming the base of the outflow. The emission from the vibrationally excited transitions is inconsistent with a single temperature, implying the lines are not in LTE. We examine several possible explanations of the observed high excitation lines, concluding that the vibrational states are most likely to be radiatively excited via rovibrational transitions in the 25-35 {\mu}m (NaCl) and 35-45 {\mu}m (KCl) range. We suggest that the molecules are produced by destruction of dust particles. Because these molecules are so rare, they are potentially unique tools for identifying high-mass protostellar disks and measuring the radiation environment around accreting young stars., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. About two generations ago, a large part of AMO science was dominated by experimental high energy collision studies and perturbative theoretical methods. Since then, AMO science has undergone a transition and is now dominated by quantum, ultracold, and ultrafast studies. But in the process, the field has passed over the complexity that lies between these two extremes. Most of the Universe resides in this intermediate region. Extraterrestrial amino acids, the chemical building blocks of the biopolymers that comprise life as we know it on Earth are present in meteoritic samples. More recently, glycine (NH$_2$CH$_2$COOH), the simplest amino acid, was detected by the Rosetta mission in comet 67P. Despite these exciting discoveries, our understanding of the chemical and physical pathways to the formation of (pre)biotic molecules is woefully incomplete. This is largely because our knowledge of chemical inventories during the different stages of star and planet formation is incomplete. It is therefore imperative to solidify our accounting of the chemical inventories, especially of critical yet low-abundance species, in key regions and to use this knowledge to inform, expand, and constrain chemical models of these reactions. This is followed naturally by a requirement to understand the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of this inventory. One of the primary mechanisms for inferring the dynamical history of planets in our Solar System and in exoplanetary systems is through observation of elemental ratios (i.e. C/O). The ability to effectively use these observations relies critically on a robust understanding of the chemistry and evolutionary history of the observed abundances. Significant efforts have been devoted to this area from within astrochemistry circles, and these efforts should be supported going forward by the larger exoplanetary science community. In addition, the construction of a next-generation radio interferometer will be required to test many of these predictive models in situ, while simultaneously providing the resolution necessary to pinpoint the location of planets in formation., Comment: To be published in the ASP Monograph Series, "Science with a Next-Generation VLA", ed. The 1-50 GHz GBT PRIMOS data contains ~50 molecular absorption lines observed in diffuse and translucent clouds located in the Galactic Center, Bar, and spiral arms in the line-of-sight to Sgr B2(N). We measure the column densities and estimate abundances, relative to H2, of 11 molecules and additional isotopologues. We use absorption by optically thin transitions of c-C3H2 to estimate the N(H2), and argue that this method is preferable to more commonly used methods. We discuss the kinematic structure and abundance patterns of small molecules including the sulfur-bearing species CS, SO, CCS, H2CS, and HCS+; oxygen-bearing molecules OH, SiO, and H2CO; and simple hydrocarbon molecules c-C3H2, l-C3H, and l-C3H+. We discuss the implications of the observed chemistry for the structure of the gas and dust in the ISM. Highlighted results include the following. First, whereas gas in the disk has a molecular hydrogen fraction of 0.65, clouds on the outer edge of the Galactic Bar and in or near the Galactic Center have molecular fractions of 0.85 and >0.9, respectively. Second, we observe trends in isotope ratios with Galactocentric distance; while carbon and silicon show enhancement of the rare isotopes at low Galactocentric distances, sulfur exhibits no trend with Galactocentric distance; the ratio of c-C3H2/c-H13CCCH provides a good estimate of the 12C:13C ratio, whereas H2CO/H2^13CO exhibits fractionation. Third, we report the presence of l-C3H+ in diffuse clouds for the first time. Finally, we suggest that CS has an enhanced abundance within higher density clumps of material in the disk, and therefore may be diagnostic of cloud conditions. If this holds, the diffuse clouds in the Galactic disk contain multiple embedded hyperdensities in a clumpy structure, and the density profile is not a simple function of A_V.

Bell et al. reported the first detection of the cyanopolyyne HC_(11)N towards the cold dark cloud TMC-1; no subsequent detections have been reported towards any source. Additional observations of cyanopolyynes and other carbon-chain molecules towards TMC-1 have shown a log-linear trend between molecule size and column density, and in an effort to further explore the underlying chemical processes driving this trend, we have analysed Green Bank Telescope observations of HC_9N and HC_(11)N towards TMC-1. Although we find an HC_9N column density consistent with previous values, HC_(11)N is not detected and we derive an upper limit column density significantly below that reported in Bell et al. Using a state-of-the-art chemical model, we have investigated possible explanations of non-linearity in the column density trend. Despite updating the chemical model to better account for ion–dipole interactions, we are not able to explain the non-detection of HC_(11)N, and we interpret this as evidence of previously unknown carbon-chain chemistry. We propose that cyclization reactions may be responsible for the depleted HC11N abundance, and that products of these cyclization reactions should be investigated as candidate interstellar molecules.

The icy mantles of interstellar dust grains are the birthplaces of the primordial prebiotic molecular inventory that may eventually seed nascent solar systems and the planets and planetesimals that form therein. Here, we present a study of two of the most abundant species in these ices after water: carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methanol (CH₃OH), using TeraHertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy and mid-infrared spectroscopy. We study pure and mixed-ices of these species, and demonstrate the power of the THz region of the spectrum to elucidate the long-range structure (i.e. crystalline versus amorphous) of the ice, the degree of segregation of these species within the ice, and the thermal history of the species within the ice. Finally, we comment on the utility of the THz transitions arising from these ices for use in astronomical observations of interstellar ices.

Rotational lines of the positive molecular ion C_3H^+ and of the neutral C_3H radical in three new vibrationally excited states with ^2Σ symmetry have been detected in a supersonic molecular beam in the centimeter-wave band. The fundamental rotational line of the ion is quite weak, but is observed with similar intensity in a dc discharge through several different hydrocarbon gases when helium is the buffer gas. Under these conditions, the fractional abundance of C_3H^+ relative to C_3H is estimated to be of order 10^(−4), i.e., toward the lower end of the ratio (10^(−3)–10^(−4)) found for protonated ions using the same discharge nozzle. For each new ^2Σ state of the C_3H radical, spectroscopic constants, including those describing hydrogen hyperfine structure, have been determined to high precision. Lines of one ^2Σ state (B = 11271 MHz) are particularly intense in our molecular beam; for this state and a second one (B = 11306 MHz), millimeter-wave transitions have also been observed between 180 and 340 GHz using a long path dc glow absorption spectrometer. On the basis of intensity measurements with this spectrometer, the inferred rotation–vibration constant α, and theoretical calculations, the state with B = 11271 MHz is tentatively assigned to the ν_5 bending mode, predicted to lie ~300 cm^(−1) above ground.

Understanding the origin of life on Earth has long fascinated the minds of the global community, and has been a driving factor in interdisciplinary research for centuries. Beyond the pioneering work of Darwin, perhaps the most widely known study in the last century is that of Miller and Urey, who examined the possibility of the formation of prebiotic chemical precursors on the primordial Earth [1]. More recent studies have shown that amino acids, the chemical building blocks of the biopolymers that comprise life as we know it on Earth, are present in meteoritic samples, and that the molecules extracted from the meteorites display isotopic signatures indicative of an extraterrestrial origin [2]. The most recent major discovery in this area has been the detection of glycine (NH2CH2COOH), the simplest amino acid, in pristine cometary samples returned by the NASA STARDUST mission [3]. Indeed, the open questions left by these discoveries, both in the public and scientific communities, hold such fascination that NASA has designated the understanding of our "Cosmic Origins" as a key mission priority. Despite these exciting discoveries, our understanding of the chemical and physical pathways to the formation of prebiotic molecules is woefully incomplete. This is largely because we do not yet fully understand how the interplay between grain-surface and sub-surface ice reactions and the gas-phase affects astrophysical chemical evolution, and our knowledge of chemical inventories in these regions is incomplete. The research presented here aims to directly address both these issues, so that future work to understand the formation of prebiotic molecules has a solid foundation from which to work. From an observational standpoint, a dedicated campaign to identify hydroxylamine (NH2OH), potentially a direct precursor to glycine, in the gas-phase was undertaken. No trace of NH2OH was found. These observations motivated a refinement of the chemical models of glycine formation, and have largely ruled out a gas-phase route to the synthesis of the simplest amino acid in the ISM. A molecular mystery in the case of the carrier of a series of transitions was resolved using observational data toward a large number of sources, confirming the identity of this important carbon-chemistry intermediate B11244 as l-C3H+ and identifying it in at least two new environments. Finally, the doubly-nitrogenated molecule carbodiimide HNCNH was identified in the ISM for the first time through maser emission features in the centimeter-wavelength regime. In the laboratory, a TeraHertz Time-Domain Spectrometer was constructed to obtain the experimental spectra necessary to search for solid-phase species in the ISM in the THz region of the spectrum. These investigations have shown a striking dependence on large-scale, long-range (i.e. lattice) structure of the ices on the spectra they present in the THz. A database of molecular spectra has been started, and both the simplest and most abundant ice species, which have already been identified, as well as a number of more complex species, have been studied. The exquisite sensitivity of the THz spectra to both the structure and thermal history of these ices may lead to better probes of complex chemical and dynamical evolution in interstellar environments.

Far-IR (THz) spectroscopy provides a powerful technique capable of identifying solid phase molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM). Thus, laboratory data of ices in the THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum have the potential to support astronomical observations in the identification of complex organic molecules in the solid phase. In addition to providing a spectral fingerprint, THz spectroscopy probes the phonon modes of a solid. As such, the absorptions of ices in the THz region give insights into the structural dynamics of species in the solid phase. This work will describe a new instrument capable of investigating ices in both the THz and Mid-IR. THz light is generated via plasma filamentation and detected via electro-optic sampling. The ability to collect spectra of ices in the Mid-IR using a commercial FTIR spectrometer allows us to compare the ices we create in the lab to the existing body of literature while building up a database of THz spectra of ices to aid in astronomical observations.

International astronomical facilities, in particular the Herschel Space Telescope, SOFIA and ALMA, are currently characterizing the interstellar medium (ISM) by collecting a huge amount of new THz spectral data that must be compared to THz laboratory spectra to be interpreted. The latter, however, are largely lacking, and this severely restricts the scientific impact of the astronomical observations. We have recently constructed a new THz time-domain spectroscopy system to investigate the spectra of interstellar relevant ice analogs in the range between 0.3 - 7 THz. The system is coupled to a FT-IR spectrometer to monitor the ices in the mid-IR (4000 - 500 cm^{-1}). The THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum is dominated by large amplitude motions, such as phonon modes and intermolecular vibrations, along with high-frequency torsional motions of individual species. This talk will focus on the laboratory investigation of the composition and structure of the bulk phases of interstellar ice analogs (i.e., H_{2}O, CO_{2}, CO, CH_{3}OH, NH_{3}, CH_{4}). Different temperatures, mixing ratios, and matrix isolation experiments will be shown. The ultimate goal of this research project is to provide the scientific community with an extensive THz ice-database, which will allow quantitative studies of the ISM, and guide future astronomical observations of species in the solid phase.

Presented here are the results of a broadband spectral line survey of the Sgr B2(N) - LMH region from 260 - 286 GHz using the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The data were taken over the course of a single night (May 26, 2013) during the course of science testing of the remote observational capabilities of the facility. The data are freely available to public both as raw, double-side band observational data and as a minimally-reduced ascii spectrum. The procedural scripts used for the preliminary data reduction using CLASS are provided as well. The observational parameters and preliminary data reduction procedures are detailed. We have constructed a new system to study the spectra of astrophysically-relevant ice analogs using THz time-domain spectroscopy from 300 GHz - 7 THz. Here, we present our initial efforts to explore the spectra of pure ices of simple, abundant interstellar species as well as complex organic molecules (COMs) and COM-doped ice mixtures. We will present preliminary spectra of pure H_2O, CO_2, methanol (CH_3OH), and methyl formate (CH_3COOH) ices, as well as spectra of these molecules embedded in a variety of other relevant interstellar analogs. Our results are discussed in the context of astronomical observations and the possibility of probing ice compositions in the absence of a background radiation source.

Several a-type transitions of the normal species were initially detected below 40 GHz using a supersonic expansion-electrical discharge source, and subsequent measurement of higher-frequency, b-type lines using double resonance provided accurate predictions in the submillimetre region. With these, searches using a millimetre-wave absorption spectrometer equipped with a radio frequency discharge source were conducted in the range 280–660 GHz, ultimately yielding nearly 100 transitions up to rR0(36) and rQ0(68). From the combined data set, all three rotational constants and centrifugal distortion terms up to the sextic order were determined to high accuracy, providing a reliable set of frequency predictions to the lower end of the THz band. Isotopic substitution has enabled both a determination of the molecular structure of HCCSH and, by inference, its formation pathway in our nozzle discharge source via the bimolecular radical-radical recombination reaction SH+C2H, which is calculated to be highly exothermic (−477 kJ/mol) using the HEAT345(Q) thermochemical scheme.

22 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community.
