The overall goal of the annual Transdisciplinary Research in Energetics and Cancer (TREC) Training Workshop is to provide transdisciplinary training for scientists in energetics and cancer and clinical care. The 2022 Workshop included 27 early-to-mid career investigators (trainees) pursuing diverse TREC research areas in basic, clinical, and population sciences. The 2022 trainees participated in a gallery walk, an interactive qualitative program evaluation method, to summarize key takeaways related to program objectives. Writing groups were formed and collaborated on this summary of the 5 key takeaways from the TREC Workshop. The 2022 TREC Workshop provided a targeted and unique networking opportunity that facilitated meaningful collaborative work addressing research and clinical needs in energetics and cancer. This report summarizes the 2022 TREC Workshop’s key takeaways and future directions for innovative transdisciplinary energetics and cancer research.

Among married couples living with breast and prostate cancer, positive perceptions of relationship quality by both survivors and their spouses were associated with lower inflammation or insulin resistance in their partner. Our data support evidence that health within couples is both interdependent and transactional and suggests that one member's perception of the relationship is associated with biologic changes in one's partner, leading to better physical health of the couple. These findings may provide a biologic underpinning to observations of an inverse relationship between relational satisfaction and overall mortality and underscore the need for a dyadic approach to health.Couples' health and health behaviors are intertwined, where the health of one partner can influence the health of the other but the biologic underpinnings are not known. We examined the associations between relational health and markers of inflammation and insulin resistance in couples coping with breast or prostate cancer.Participants (90 cancer survivor-spouse dyads) completed self-report measures of relational health including Dyadic Adjustment Scale-7 (relationship quality), Dyadic Coping Inventory (communication), and shared physical activity, as well as Community Health Activities Model Program for Seniors (individual physical activity). Inflammation (C-reactive protein (CRP)) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured in serum samples. Structural equation modeling including demographic and clinical covariate controls was used to estimate separate actor and partner effects of relationship quality, communication, and physical activity on CRP and HOMA-IR.Participants were aged 63.1 ± 10.4 years with an average relationship duration of 30.0 ± 1.1 years. Higher survivor perceived relationship quality was associated with lower spouse CRP (b = - 0.07; 95%CI: - 0.13, - 0.01), whereas higher spouse perceived relationship quality was associated with lower survivor HOMA-IR (b = - 0.07; 95%CI: - 0.13, - 0.03). There were no other significant actor or partner effects observed.Among cancer survivor-spouse dyads, how one member of the couple perceives the quality of the relationship impacts disease biomarkers in the other, providing preliminary evidence for biological linkage between relational health and chronic disease risk.Relationship quality may positively influence biomarkers of inflammation and insulin resistance in couples coping with breast and prostate cancer. IntroductionTreatment delays are significantly associated with increased mortality risk among adult cancer patients; however, factors associated with these delays have not been robustly evaluated. This review and meta-analysis will evaluate factors associated with treatment delays among patients with five common cancers.Methods and analysisScientific databases including Ovid MEDLINE, Elsevier Embase, EBSCOhost CINAHL Plus Full Text, Elsevier Scopus and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global will be searched to identify relevant articles published between January 2000 and October 2021. Research articles published in the USA evaluating factors associated with treatment delay among breast, lung, prostate, cervical or colorectal adult cancer patients will be included. The primary outcome of the meta-analysis will be the pooled adjusted and unadjusted odds of treatment delay for patient, disease, provider and system-level factors defined according to specified time intervals. The secondary outcomes will be mean or median treatment delay for each cancer site according to first treatment and the influence of factors on the pooled mean treatment delay for each cancer site (via meta-regression analyses). Results from qualitative and mixed-methods studies will be narratively synthesised. Three reviewers will independently screen records generated from the search and two reviewers will independently extract data following a consensus agreement. Statistical heterogeneity will be assessed with a standard I2 test and funnel plots will be conducted to evaluate publication bias. Risk of bias will be assessed independently by two authors using validated tools according to the article’s study design.Ethics and disseminationFormal ethical approval is not required because the work is being carried out on publicly accessible studies. The findings of this review will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed scientific journal, academic conferences, social media, and key stakeholders.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42021293131.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe diet and physical activity (PA) behaviors and health beliefs among cancer survivors and identify potential differences between adolescent and young adult (AYA) and adult/older cancer survivors. METHODS: Cancer survivors (n = 1864) participating in the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) provided responses regarding diet and PA and selected health beliefs related to general health and cancer (self-efficacy, attitudinal belief, normative belief, risk belief, intention, and self-regulation). Health belief associations with diet and PA were assessed using adjusted logistic regression models, and multiple linear regression was used for a computed Modified American Cancer Society Adherence score (0–10, higher score indicates higher adherence to recommendations); age at diagnosis was evaluated as a potential effect modifier. RESULTS: Health behaviors between AYA and adult/older were not significantly different; a greater percent of AYA met fruit and resistance PA recommendations. Higher health self-efficacy was associated with meeting aerobic PA recommendations (odds ratio [OR]: 1.71; confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.13–2.60; p = 0.01). Higher intention was inversely related to meeting vegetable recommendation (OR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.35–0.97; p = 0.04). Self-regulation was associated with higher odds of meeting each recommendation. Background Over-the-counter, natural product-based (nonvitamin, nonmineral) dietary supplement (NVNM DS) use is common in adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a group at risk for drug-DS interactions, due to polypharmacy, but this use is underreported to health care providers. Recent dramatic changes in US sales of specific NVNM DS suggest that the prevalence and types of NVNM DS used in RA populations may also have shifted. Objectives A study was undertaken to identify current and past use of specific NVNM DS for RA disease treatment and to examine associations between use of NVNM DS, RA pharmaceuticals, and/or vitamin or mineral (VM) DS. Methods We developed a survey instrument to capture current and ever use of specific NVNM DS, VM DS, and RA pharmaceuticals, with 696 subjects self-reporting an RA diagnosis recruited online or in clinic for survey participation. Analyses were limited to 611 subjects reporting RA diagnosis after age 18 y and treatment with specific RA pharmaceuticals. Results Most participants reported DS use, with current usage prevalence 49.6% (n = 303), 83.5% (n = 510), or 87.6% (n = 535) for NVNM, VM, or any DS, respectively. While not having appeared in previous RA surveys, turmeric and ginger were among the top 3 NVNM DS in current use, along with fish oil/ω-3 (n-3) PUFA. Concurrent NVNM DS use was reported by 48.2% (n = 243) of participants currently using RA pharmaceuticals (n = 504) and was more common in those using disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs only (no biologics). Most methotrexate users (83%) reported concurrent folate supplementation, with one-third also using turmeric, which is notable because methotrexate and turmeric have been associated with hepatotoxicity. Conclusion Individuals with RA commonly use NVNM DS in combination with RA pharmaceuticals, including a previously undocumented but popular use of turmeric or ginger supplements with an unclear risk/benefit ratio.

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, here defined as individuals diagnosed with cancer between 15 and 39 years of age, are at high risk for adverse late-term metabolic effects of treatment through adulthood. Diet is a modifiable lifestyle behavior that may improve metabolic health outcomes in AYA cancer survivors. However, the details of dietary interventions for this unique population remain largely undescribed. In this systematic review, we aim to synthesize the results of dietary interventions for adult AYA cancer survivors. Seven databases and clinical trial registries were searched in March 2019 for interventions targeting dietary behaviors in AYA cancer survivors (PROPSERO systematic review number: CRD42019126376). Descriptive statistics and a narrative synthesis were completed to detail intervention participants and components. After full text review of 233 studies, four studies met all inclusion criteria. All studies were heterogeneous for participant age, cancer type, and duration, and were designed for feasibility and preliminary efficacy. Included studies followed different dietary guidance; however, each resulted in a significant change on a primary outcome of either dietary quality or body composition. Three of the four studies included a theoretical framework, where self-efficacy was a central construct. Counseling, in person, telephone, or electronic, provided behavioral support. Results of this systematic review suggest high potential to change dietary behaviors in AYA, but interventions remain limited. AYA cancer survivors demonstrate unique physiological and psychosocial needs, and future interventions designed to address this care gap should be targeted for this population with consideration of social support, delivery mode, and individual tailoring.

BACKGROUND Patients with hematologic malignancies undergo induction chemotherapy potentially impairing mobility and worsening symptoms prior to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (autoHSCT). Wearable sensors may identify patients with altered mobility from chemotherapy-related symptoms before additional treatment who can benefit from early rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE We conducted a cross-sectional study comparing mobility in patients with hematologic malignancies after chemotherapy and before autoHSCT to healthy, age-matched adult controls and determined relationships between mobility and chemotherapy-related symptoms. METHODS Patients pre-autoHSCT (n=78) and controls (n=78) completed prescribed performance tests using wearable inertial sensors to quantify mobility (selected turning, gait, and balance measures previously associated with fall risk); patients completed patient-reported questionnaires to assess chemotherapy-related symptoms (FACT/GOG-NTX4, EORTC QLQ-C30, PROMIS F-SF, VSS-sf, and CES-D). Paired t-tests compared mobility between patients and controls. Stepwise multivariable linear regression models evaluated associations between mobility and symptoms in patients. RESULTS Patients (aged 60.3±10.3 years) had significantly worse turning (turn duration (P CONCLUSIONS Using wearable inertial sensors, patients about to receive autoHSCT demonstrated worse mobility in multiple domains of gait quality compared to controls, that was in part related to symptoms common to induction therapy. Wearable inertial sensors used in the clinic setting could provide granular information about impending mobility deficits prior to further treatment, which might be remediable through specific rehabilitation and/or symptom management.

Introduction Prostate cancer can negatively impact the health of patients and their spouse, particularly early on in the cancer trajectory. Purpose To determine the feasibility and acceptability of dyadic exercises during radiation therapy and preliminary efficacy on physical, mental, and relational outcomes for men and their spouses. Exercising Together©, originally designed as a 6-month dyadic resistance training program for couples post-treatment, was adapted for the radiation setting. Methods We conducted a single-group pilot feasibility study of Exercising Together© in men scheduled for radiation therapy for prostate cancer and their spouse. Couples attended supervised exercise sessions thrice weekly throughout radiation treatment and were followed up 8 weeks later. Primary outcomes were feasibility and acceptability with secondary outcomes of changes in physical (physical functioning (short physical performance battery (sPPB)), gait speed (m/s), functional capacity (400-m walk (min), physical activity (min/week)), mental (depressive symptoms (CES-D), and anxiety (SCL-90 ANX)), and relationship (Dyadic Coping, Role Overload, and Physical Intimacy Behavior Scales) health outcomes for each partner. Participants completed an evaluation post-intervention. Results Ten couples enrolled and 8 completed the intervention, attending 83% of scheduled sessions. Couple satisfaction with the intervention was high (patients: mean difference (MD) = 9.4 ± 1.9 and spouses: MD = 10.0 ± 0.0, on a 1–10 scale). At post-intervention, gait speed (MD = 0.1; 95%CI: 0.1, 0.2; p = 0.003; d = 0.94) and functional capacity (MD = −0.6; 95%CI: −0.9, 0.3; p = 0.002; d = −0.42) improved in patients and sPPB in spouses (MD = 1.3; 95%CI: 0.3, 2.2; p = 0.02; d = 0.71). Total physical activity increased non-significantly for patients and significantly for spouses at post-intervention and decreased at follow-up (MD = 179.6; 95%CI: 55.4, 303.7; p = 0.01; d = 1.35 and MD = −139.9; 95%CI: −266.5, 13.3; p = 0.03; d=1.06). Among patients, anxiety and active engagement significantly improved post-intervention (MD = −2.3; 95%CI: −3.8, 0.7; p = 0.01; d = −0.43 and MD = 2.5; 95%CI: 0.7, 4.3; p = 0.01; d = 0.98, respectively). There were modest effects on other physical, mental, and relationship health domains in patients and spouses. Conclusion A modified version of Exercising Together© is a feasible and acceptable program during radiation therapy for prostate cancer and shows preliminary evidence for improvements on physical, mental, and relational health in both patient and spouse. A larger, fully powered randomized controlled trial is warranted and could help shift the landscape toward dyadically targeted interventions. Oxylipins derived from arachidonic acid (ARA) have been implicated in the development of colorectal adenomas and colorectal cancer. The primary purpose of this work was to determine the relationship between plasma levels of oxylipins and colorectal adenoma characteristics at study entry, as well as with the development of a new adenoma during follow-up within a Phase III adenoma prevention clinical trial with selenium (Sel). Secondarily, we sought to determine whether the selenium intervention influenced plasma oxylipin levels. Four oxylipins were quantified in stored plasma samples from a subset of Sel study subjects (n = 256) at baseline and at 12-months. There were significantly lower odds of an advanced adenoma at baseline with higher prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), with an OR (95% CI) of 0.55 (0.33–0.92), and with 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) ((0.53 (0.33–0.94)), and of a large adenoma with higher PGE2 ((0.52 (0.31–0.87)). In contrast, no associations were observed between any oxylipin and the development of a new adenoma during follow-up. Selenium supplementation was associated with a significantly smaller increase in 5-HETE after 12 months compared to the placebo, though no other results were statistically significant. The ARA-derived oxylipins may have a role in the progression of non-advanced adenoma to advanced, but not with the development of a new adenoma.

Purpose: Short and long sleep duration and poor sleep quality are risk factors for weight gain and cancer mortality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between sleep and weight change among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. Methods: Women participating in the Women’s Health Initiative who were diagnosed with incident breast cancer between year 1 and year 3 were included. Self-reported sleep duration was categorized as ≤5 hours (short), 6 hours, 7-8 hours (optimal), and ≥9 hours (long). Self-reported sleep quality was categorized as poor, average, and above average. Post-diagnosis weight change was the difference of weight closest to, but preceding diagnosis, and year 3 weight. We used linear regression to evaluate sleep duration and sleep quality associations with post-diagnosis weight change adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Among 1,156 participants, 63% were weight stable after diagnosis; average weight gain post cancer diagnosis was 3.2 kg. Six percent of women reported sleeping ≤5 hours, 26% reported 6 hours, 64% reported 7-8 hours, and 4% reported ≥9 hours. There were no differences in adjusted estimates of weight change among participants with short duration (0.37kg; 95%CI -0.88, 1.63), or long duration (-0.56kg; 95% CI -2.03, 0.90) compared to optimal duration, nor was there a difference among poor quality (-0.51kg; 95% CI -1.42, 0.41) compared to above average quality. Conclusion: Among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors, sleep duration and quality were not associated with weight change after breast cancer diagnosis. Future studies should consider capturing change in adiposity and to expand beyond self-reported sleep.

BACKGROUND Hispanic survivors of cancer experience increased cancer burden. Lifestyle behaviors, including diet and physical activity, may reduce the cancer burden. There is limited knowledge about the posttreatment lifestyle experiences of Hispanic survivors of cancer living on the United States–Mexico border. OBJECTIVE This study aims to support the development of a stakeholder-informed, culturally relevant, evidence-based lifestyle intervention for Mexican-origin Hispanic survivors of cancer living in a border community to improve their dietary quality and physical activity. METHODS Semistructured interviews with 12 Mexican-origin Hispanic survivors of breast cancer and 7 caregivers were conducted through internet-based teleconferencing. The interviews explored the impact of cancer on lifestyle and treatment-related symptoms, perception of lifestyle as an influence on health after cancer, and intervention content and delivery preferences. Interviews were analyzed using a deductive thematic approach grounded in the Quality of Cancer Survivorship Care Framework. RESULTS Key survivor themes included perception of Mexican diet as unhealthy, need for reliable diet-related information, perceived benefits of physical activity after cancer treatment, family support for healthy lifestyles (physical and emotional), presence of cancer-related symptoms interfering with lifestyle, and financial barriers to living a healthy lifestyle. Among caregivers, key themes included effects of the cancer caregiving experience on caregivers’ lifestyle and cancer-preventive behaviors and gratification in providing support to the survivors. CONCLUSIONS The interviews revealed key considerations to the adaptation, development, and implementation of a theory-informed, evidence-based, culturally relevant lifestyle program to support lifestyle behavior change among Mexican-origin Hispanic survivors of cancer living in border communities. Our qualitative findings highlight specific strategies that can be implemented in health promotion programming aimed at encouraging cancer protective behaviors to reduce the burden of cancer and comorbidities in Mexican-origin survivors of cancer living in border communities.

Background The collection of self-reported physical activity using validated questionnaires has known bias and measurement error. Objective Accelerometry, an objective measure of daily activity, increases the rigor and accuracy of physical activity measurements. Here, we describe the methodology and related protocols for accelerometry data collection and quality assurance using the Actigraph GT9X accelerometer data collection in a convenience sample of ovarian cancer survivors enrolled in GOG/NRG 0225, a 24-month randomized controlled trial of diet and physical activity intervention versus attention control. Methods From July 2015 to December 2019, accelerometers were mailed on 1337 separate occasions to 580 study participants to wear at 4 time points (baseline, 6, 12, and 24 months) for 7 consecutive days. Study staff contacted participants via telephone to confirm their availability to wear the accelerometers and reviewed instructions and procedures regarding the return of the accelerometers and assisted with any technology concerns. Results We evaluated factors associated with wear compliance, including activity tracking, use of a mobile app, and demographic characteristics with chi-square tests and logistic regression. Compliant data, defined as ≥4 consecutive days with ≥10 hours daily wear time, exceeded 90% at all study time points. Activity tracking, but no other characteristics, was significantly associated with compliant data at all time points (P Conclusions The high compliance and data quality associated with this protocol suggest that it could be disseminated to support researchers who seek to collect robust objective activity data in cancer survivors residing in a wide geographic area.

Introduction Chronotype is defined as an individual’s propensity to sleep at a specific time in a 24-hour cycle with late chronotype associated with poorer health outcomes including cancer. The role of chronotype on lifestyle behaviors remains relatively undefined in ovarian cancer. The Lifestyle Intervention for oVarian cancer Enhanced Survival study is testing whether 1205 women randomized to a diet and physical activity intervention for 24-months will have longer progression-free survival versus attention control. Here we determine the frequency and predictors of late versus early and mid chronotypes in disease-free ovarian cancer survivors. Methods 894 ovarian cancer survivors with baseline measures were included in analyses. Chronotypes were determined using self-reported time to bed (early- < 9 pm; mid- ≥ 9 pm - ≤12 am; late- >12 am) captured through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Demographic, diet and physical activity data were captured with validated questionnaires and BMI measured in clinic. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression, adjusted for smoking status and race, were performed. Results 12.4% of women were late chronotype with significant differences between chronotypes observed for race, smoking history, sleep duration, and physical activity (p < 0.05). Late chronotype reported fewer hours of sleep per night (6.54 ± 1.51hrs) compared to mid (7.10± 1.31hrs) and early (7.74 ± 1.30hrs) chronotype. Blacks had higher odds of being late chronotype, OR 4.28 (95% CI 2.16-8.46). Late chronotype were more likely to report a history of smoking and lower recreational activity and had a higher mean BMI of 29.1± 6.0 kg/m2 compared to mid and early chronotype 27.8± 6.2 kg/m2 and 27.4± 5.4kg/m2, respectively. No significant differences were observed for sleep or diet quality, age, education or employment status. Conclusion Results of this analysis are consistent with other community-based population studies with regard to chronotype and race. Ovarian cancer is aggressive and late chronotype are more likely to have other risk factors that elevate risk of recurrence (obesity, tobacco use and inactivity. Six-month data are being analyzed by treatment arm and will provide important insights as to the role of sleep phase and lifestyle behaviors in this vulnerable population. Dairy products have been a key component of dietary guidance in the United States for more than 100 years. In light of major advances in the understanding of dietary intake and metabolism, the aim of this review was to examine whether dairy should remain a single commodity in federal guidance. Considerations include recognizing that a substantial proportion of the world’s adult population (65%–70%) exhibits lactase nonpersistence, a reduced ability to metabolize lactose to glucose and galactose. Shifts in the US population, including a greater proportion of African Americans and Asians, are of key importance because several studies have shown a markedly higher prevalence of lactase nonpersistence and, consequently, a lower dairy intake among these groups. While cow’s milk alternatives are available, families who use them will pay up to an additional $1400 per year compared with those who are able to consume dairy products. Dietary guidance also contains downstream effects for government assistance, such as the US Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. For reasons like these, Canada has recently removed dairy as a separate food group in national dietary guidance. The results of the present review suggest that consideration of this modification when developing population-level guidelines in the United States is warranted.

Background: Fiber-based prebiotic supplements are marketed for maintaining bowel health and promoting beneficial gut bacteria. However, the association between prebiotic supplement use and colorectal cancer risk and mortality is unknown. Methods: The association between prebiotic use and colorectal cancer risk and mortality was evaluated in postmenopausal women in the Women's Health Initiative study. Self-reported prebiotic use was documented at study enrollment. Adjudicated colorectal cancer cases and mortality were captured using medical and death records. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the HR related to prebiotic use and colorectal cancer risk and mortality. Results: In total, 3,032 colorectal cancer cases were diagnosed during an average 15.4 years of follow-up. Overall, 3.7% of women used a prebiotic with psyllium, the major fiber type. Use of any prebiotic supplement was not associated with colorectal cancer risk or mortality. The type of prebiotic supplement (none vs. insoluble or soluble) was not associated with colorectal cancer risk; however, use of insoluble fiber prebiotics compared with none was associated with higher colorectal cancer mortality [HR, 2.79; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.32–5.90; P = 0.007]. Likelihood ratio tests indicated no significant interactions between prebiotic use and other colorectal cancer risk factors, including metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Prebiotic fiber supplement use was not associated with colorectal cancer risk. Insoluble, but not soluble, prebiotic fiber use was associated with higher colorectal cancer mortality. These findings do not support the promotion of prebiotic fiber supplements to reduce colorectal cancer risk or colorectal cancer mortality. Impact: Further investigation is warranted for findings regarding insoluble prebiotic fiber and higher colorectal cancer mortality in postmenopausal women.

6018 Background: Chronotype is defined as an individual’s propensity to sleep at a specific time in a 24-hour cycle with late chronotype associated with poorer health outcomes including cancer. Chronotype remains relatively undefined in ovarian cancer. The Lifestyle Intervention for oVarian cancer Enhanced Survival (LIVES) study is testing whether 1205 women randomized to a diet and physical activity intervention for 24-months will have longer progression-free survival versus an attention control. Here we determine the association of late and early vs mid chronotypes and patient reported outcomes (PROs), lifestyle behaviors and biomarkers of metabolic health and inflammation in ovarian cancer survivors post-treatment (≤ 6.5 months). Methods: Chronotype was determined using self-reported time to bed (early < 9 pm; mid ≥ 9 pm - ≤12 am; late > 12 am) captured through the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and PROs were measured using subscales of the Rand-36 questionnaire. Validated questionnaires for diet and physical activity were used and biomarkers were collected at routine clinic visits. A total subsample of 438 ovarian cancer survivors enrolled in NRG/GOG 0225- LIVES study with all available baseline measures were included in analyses. Descriptive statistics, general linear mixed models, and Pearson correlations were performed. Results: Reported pain was significantly higher in late chronotypes (P < 0.05) when compared to early and mid-chronotypes. Total sleep duration was significant between the 3 chronotypes (P < 0.05) with late chronotype experiencing less sleep (6.77 ± 1.67 hrs) than mid chronotype (7.04 ± 1.31 hrs) and early chronotype (7.56 ± 1.33 hrs). Higher reported pain was significantly correlated to poorer CRP levels (r = -0.198, P < 0.001) suggesting higher systemic inflammation and poorer blood insulin levels (r = -0.116, P < 0.05) independent of chronotype classification. All other subscales of the RAND 36 and physical activity were not associated with chronotype. Diet quality trended towards significance with a positive association observed in early and an inverse association in late chronotypes (P = 0.06). Conclusions: Late chronotypes reported higher levels of pain which was associated with poorer sleep and diet quality and higher levels of inflammation and insulin. More robust data, including actigraphy, are being analyzed and will provide additional insight of the role of circadian rhythm and phenotype on pain and key biomarkers in ovarian cancer survivors. Scope Turmeric is a top selling dietary supplement (DS) in the United States with rapidly expanding usage. Therefore, turmeric DS formulations available for sale in an urban US retail marketplace are analyzed, and point of sale information is related to measures of quality relevant to safety. Methods and results Eighty-seven unique turmeric DS are identified; a majority (94%) contained turmeric-derived curcuminoid extracts (TD-CE), which are combined with other bioactives in 47% of products, including piperine (24%), an additive that could alter the metabolism of concurrent medications. While curcuminoid content is within 80% of anticipated for a majority of products analyzed (n = 35), curcuminoid composition (% curcumin) did not meet US Pharmacopeia (USP) criteria for TD-CE in 59% and is suggestive of possible unlabeled use of synthetic curcumin in some. Lead content is associated with the inclusion of turmeric root and exceeded USP limits in one product. Residues of toxic class 1 or 2 solvents, which are not needed for TD-CE isolation, are present in 71% of products, although quantified levels were within USP-specified limits. Conclusion Assessment of turmeric DS quality at point of sale is difficult for consumers and may best be managed in partnership with knowledgeable healthcare professionals.
