Multi-phase systems with phase-change phenomena, in particular boiling, are common in many industrial applications, including power generation plants and thermal management of high-power and high-dissipation-rate micro-devices which would burn out if not cooled properly. Due to the non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the complexity of coupling the heat and mass transfer in phase-change and surface processes, these systems are difficult to describe accurately. Although experiments have been conducted to study boiling, its mechanisms and heat transfer characteristics are still not understood completely. We simulate pool boiling using the diffuse interface method (DIM) embedded in our home-grown “TPLS” solver. This method allows the imposition of a boundary condition to prescribe wettability removing the stress singularity at the three-phase contact line, thus enabling us to analyse the role of surface features on heat transfer coefficient, bubble growth and bubble departures. Our framework also allows simulation of populations of bubbles and analyse bubble interactions at varied bubble sizes for different wettabilities as a function of superheat. We compare our simulations with our nucleate boiling experiments using FC72 on silicon surfaces. Our simulations show the importance of surface tension on departure conditions, suggesting a higher heat transfer coefficient in hydrophilic cases. Conversely, we have found limited bubble growth rate on hydrophobic surfaces. In hydrophobic cases, the larger amount of residual vapour left on the heater surface after bubble departure limits the coolability of the substrate but it might promote the growth of forming bubbles subsequently EMBOSS Project

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) causes chronic enteritis in a wide range of animal species. In cattle, MAP causes a chronic disease called Johne's disease, or paratuberculosis, that is not treatable and the efficacy of vaccine control is controversial. The clinical phase of the disease is characterised by diarrhoea, weight loss, drop in milk production and eventually death. Susceptibility to MAP infection is heritable with heritability estimates ranging from 0.06 to 0.10. There have been several studies over the last few years that have identified genetic loci putatively associated with MAP susceptibility, however, with the availability of genome-wide high density SNP maker panels it is now possible to carry out association studies that have higher precision. Methodology/Principal Findings The objective of the current study was to localize genes having an impact on Johne's disease susceptibility using the latest bovine genome information and a high density SNP panel (Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip) to perform a case/control, genome-wide association analysis. Samples from MAP case and negative controls were selected from field samples collected in 2007 and 2008 in the province of Lombardy, Italy. Cases were defined as animals serologically positive for MAP by ELISA. In total 966 samples were genotyped: 483 MAP ELISA positive and 483 ELISA negative. Samples were selected randomly among those collected from 119 farms which had at least one positive animal. Cell-mediated immune response to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) was studied in 13 different progeny groups belonging to a second generation cross between two lines of White Leghorn previously selected for 10 generations for high antibody response to Newcastle disease vaccine (ND3) and high cell-mediated response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) measured as wing web swelling. The cutaneous hypersensitivity response to KLH was assessed in KLH immunized and non-immunized birds. Wing thickness was measured at three time points: before the injection and 4 and 24 hours after the injection. The effect of previous immunization and genetic background was assessed. While no differences were present between progeny types or to a randomly bred control line at any of the three time points, significant differences were present between immunized and not immunized birds 24 hours after challenge. Results demonstrate that KLH immunized birds perform better and that the previous selection and crossbreeding scheme has not influenced the intensity of the skin swelling response to KLH. Apparently, neither selection for antibody responsiveness to ND3 nor selection for enhanced responsiveness to a T cell mitogen affected delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) to the Th 2 antigen KLH. These results may serve to facilitate further selection based on independent immune parameters.

Among the most straining trends that farmers have to face there are: on one side, to guarantee welfare and adequate life conditions for animals and to reduce the environmental footprint, on the other side, to develop new strategies to improve farm management reducing costs. The current conditions and the expected developments of the dairy sector highlight a strong need for more efficient and sustainable farming systems. Studying heat stress, herd management and housing and animals’ productive and reproductive performances is fundamental for the economic and environmental sustainability of the dairy chain. New and effective tools to cope with these challenges have been provided by Precision Livestock Farming (PLF), which is nowadays increasingly applied and makes possible to control quali-quantitative parameters related to production, health, behaviour, and real-time locomotion per animal. The research key challenge is to turn these data into knowledge to provide real-time support in farming optimisation. This research focuses specifically on different systems to collect, process and derive useful information from data on animal welfare and productivity. A multi-disciplinary approach has been adopted to generate a decision support system for farmers.
