BackgroundHot, desert Gulf countries are host to millions of migrant workers doing outdoor jobs such as construction and hospitality. The Gulf countries apply a summertime ban on midday work to protect workers from extreme heat, although without clear evidence of effectiveness. We assessed the risk of occupational injuries associated with extreme hot temperatures during the summertime ban on midday work in Kuwait.MethodsWe collected daily occupational injuries in the summer months that are reported to the Ministry of Health’s Occupational Health Department for 5 years from 2015 to 2019. We fitted generalised additive models with a quasi-Poisson distribution in a time series design. A 7-day moving average of daily temperature was modelled with penalised splines adjusted for relative humidity, time trend and day of the week.ResultsDuring the summertime ban, the daily average temperature was 39.4°C (±1.8°C). There were 7.2, 7.6 and 9.4 reported injuries per day in the summer months of June, July and August, respectively. Compared with the 10th percentile of summer temperatures in Kuwait (37.0°C), the average day with a temperature of 39.4°C increased the relative risk of injury to 1.44 (95% CI 1.34 to 1.53). Similarly, temperatures of 40°C and 41°C were associated with relative risks of 1.48 (95% CI 1.39 to 1.59) and 1.44 (95% CI 1.27 to 1.63), respectively. At the 90th percentile (42°C), the risks levelled off (relative risk 1.21; 95% CI 0.93 to 1.57).ConclusionWe found substantial increases in the risk of occupational injury from extremely hot temperatures despite the ban on midday work policy in Kuwait. ‘Calendar-based’ regulations may be inadequate to provide occupational heat protections, especially for migrant workers.

SUMMARY We integrate three advanced numerical techniques—Gaussian quadrature grid (GQG) discretization, a new generalized stiffness reduction method and the latest version of an efficient parallelized direct solver to achieve accurate 3-D frequency-domain seismic wave modelling in viscoelastic anisotropic media. A GQG is employed to sample and interpolate both model parameters and wavefield quantities as well as to fit with arbitrary free-surface topography and subsurface interfaces of a geological model. A new version of the generalized stiffness reduction method is utilized to effectively remove the artificial boundary edge effects for which the common perfectly matched layer method fails. The most recent version of a multifrontal massively parallel direct solver is applied to tackle the notoriously expensive computation of frequency-domain 3-D wave modelling. We validate the 3-D modelling by comparing with the exact solutions for homogeneous viscoelastic isotropic, vertically transversely isotropic and orthorhombic media. All the results show very close matches between the numerical and analytical solutions. Then, we investigate the computational efficiency of the parallelized direct solver, compare its performance using different ordering schemes, in-core and out-of-core factorization modes and the block low-rank approximation in the factorization for different grid sizes. Our modelling results show that the ordering scheme of the so-called ‘Metis’ is the best for reducing computer memory and run time, and the parallelized direct solver is remarkably faster than iterative solvers for similar workloads but at the expense of higher memory requirements. The out-of-core factorization mode can effectively reduce the memory cost without a compromising on run time. The block low-rank approximation is able to significantly reduce the run time in both the factorization and solving process (up to 56 per cent in total), but will increase the memory cost when using the out-of-core factorization mode. Efficient application of this parallel direct solver should use ‘Metis’ as the ordering scheme and select the out-of-core factorization mode without the block low-rank approximation as the best scheme to save the memory cost, or the in-core factorization mode with the block low-rank approximation for the fastest computation. Finally, we demonstrate the excellent applicability of the 3-D wave modelling scheme for a practical and complex heterogeneous geological model.

Endometrial remolding and angiogenesis are critical events that occur during pregnancy in order to establish uteroplacental vascular communication. This study investigated the role of uterine telocytes (TCs) in pregnancy. We analyzed the distribution of TCs and morphological changes in the endometrium of the gravid rabbit uterus at different stages of pregnancy: after ovulation, pre-implantation (day 7), post-implantation (days 8 and 9), and mid-pregnancy (day 14) and late (days 21–28) pregnancy. TCs gradually increased with the progression of pregnancy. They had distinctive telopodes (TPs) and podoms, with intranucleolar chromatin. The TCs established contact with decidual cells, growing a glandular epithelium, blood vessels, and immune cells, such as lymphocytes, neutrophils, and macrophages. The TCs underwent morphological changes at the post-implantation phase. They acquired thick and voluminous TPs, formed an extensive three-dimensional (3D) labyrinth at mid-pregnancy, and exhibited irregular-shaped nuclei and a dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum at late pregnancy. They also acquired a convoluted contour-formed complex network. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed an extensive 3D network in the endometrium, forming a condensed sheath at late pregnancy. Transmission electron microscopy and SEM detected fenestrated TPs, and TCs were identified by CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor expression. TCs also expressed matrix metalloproteinase-9 and transforming growth factor beta-1. Results suggested that TCs might play an essential role in maternal placenta formation, especially decidualization, regulation of uterine gland development, and neovascularization of maternal uterine blood vessels.

Purpose: To evaluate racial/ethnic disparities in patient care experiences (PCEs) among prostate cancer (PCa) survivors. Methods: This retrospective study used 2007–2015 National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results registry data linked to Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems surveys. First survey ≥ 6 months post-PCa diagnosis was analyzed. We performed multivariable linear regression, adjusting for demographic and clinical covariates, to evaluate the association of race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs), non-Hispanic Black (NHBs), Hispanic, non-Hispanic Asian (NHAs), and other races) with PCE composite measures: getting needed care, doctor communication, getting care quickly, getting needed prescription drugs (Rx), and customer service. Results: Among 7319 PCa survivors, compared to NHWs, Hispanics, NHBs and NHAs reported lower scores for getting care quickly (ß = −3.69; p = 0.002, ß = −2.44; p = 0.021, and ß = −6.44; p < 0.001, respectively); Hispanics scored worse on getting needed care (ß = −2.16; p = 0.042) and getting needed Rx (ß = −2.93; p = 0.009), and NHAs scored worse on customer service (ß = −7.60; p = 0.003), and getting needed Rx (ß = −3.08; p = 0.020). However, NHBs scored better than NHWs on doctor communication (ß = 1.95, p = 0.006). No statistically significant differences were found between other races and NHWs. Conclusions: Comparing to NHWs, Hispanics and NHAs reported worse experiences on several PCE composite measures, while NHBs reported worse scores on one but better scores on another PCE composite measure. Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind these disparities and their influence on healthcare utilization and health outcomes among PCa survivors.

Background: Genital warts (GWs) are highly prevalent sexually transmitted viral illnesses that are most prevalent in young, sexually active people of both sexes. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) cause GWs. The cytokine IL-33, an IL-1 family member, stimulates immune cells necessary for type 2 immune reactions. Immune cells like CD8+ T lymphocytes, neutrophils, and macrophages, Th1 cells, and B cells, and natural killer cells that are engaged in type-1 immunity, infection, and chronic inflammation are activated in part by IL-33. Aim: This study aims to examine whether there is a difference in levels of serum IL-33 between genital warts patients and healthy controls and its correlation with genital warts' characteristics. Subjects and Methods: Levels of serum IL-33 were assessed in 40 patients with GWs and 40 healthy control persons using enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay kits. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effect of Whole body vibration (WBV) versus neuromuscular exercise (NEMEX) to prove which treatment produced significant effect on pain, knee function disability, static and dynamic postural stability in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Method: Forty-five patients (39 women and 6 men) aged 45 to 62 years with grade 2 KOA were randomly assigned into the following three groups (all n = 15): group A (control group) received traditional treatment only (US, stretching and strengthening exercise); group B received NEMEX and traditional treatment and group C received WBV exercise and traditional treatment. Outcome measures were assessed pre and post treatment and included pain severity using the Arabic numerical pain rating scale (ANPRS), functional disability by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis index, static balance (close and open eye) by Unipedal Stance Test and dynamic stability by Biodex Balance System (BBS). Results: The within-group analysis showed significant changes in pain severity, functional disability, static and dynamic stability index in groups B and C pre and post treatment (p < 0.05).

In literature, the development of spinal deformities was reported after surgical intervention for congenital heart disease using thoracotomy and sternotomy incisions in children; however, there are not enough data regarding the incidence of spinal kyphosis after open-heart surgery in adults. This study aimed to determine the impact of open-heart surgery using median sternotomy incision on the sagittal plane thoracic spine curve and pulmonary functions after open-heart surgery. A cross- sectional study was conducted on 100 participants (53 ± 9.43 years), who underwent open heart surgery using median sternotomy. The spinal kyphotic curve was evaluated using a Flexicurve ruler and spirometry parameters [forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and ratio of forced expiratory volume in the first second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC)] were evaluated before and one week after open-heart surgery. The comparison between the preoperative and postoperative measurements of the variables under study was performed using the paired t-test. Statistical significance was set at (P ˂ 0.05). The results revealed a significant increase in the dorsal kyphotic curve (9.75 ± 2.32) and a significant decrease in all spirometry parameters under study [(FVC: 2.12 ± .77); (FEV1:1.55 ± .64) and (FEV1/FVC: 0.72 ± .13)] with an alpha level of (P < 0.05). There is a high incidence of exaggerating the sagittal plane thoracic spine curvature (thoracic kyphosis), and reduction in the pulmonary functions after open-heart surgery using median sternotomy incision.

Background: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) refers to the inflammatory lung condition that results from inhalation of various (mostly organic) antigens leading to development of lymphocytic alveolitis and granulomatous pneumonitis. Pathogenesis of the disease is not fully understood and identification and removal of the causative agents remains the cornerstone of treatment and a major determinant of prognosis. Bronchoscopy and BAL can be used to characterize alveolitis and inflammatory cells infiltrate assuming to have a main role inthe pathogenesis of the disease process. Aim : to improve the characterization of alveolitis in HP on a number of patients with well-defined stages of disease activity and to assess the frequency of cellularity, CD4 and CD8 alveolitis. Subjects and methods: 88 HP cases diagnosed by thorough history, clinical examination, HRCT (with scoring system for each radiological pattern), spi rometry, and FOB with BAL for cellularity and flowcytometry (FCM) to determine CD4/CD8 ratio.Results: The mean total cell count (TCC)/cmm was (397±241) in subacute cases and (247±291) in chronic cases with statistically significant difference P-value 0.002. Mean lymphocytes percent was (45±19%) in subacute cases and 39±20% in chronic cases with no statistically significant value.

This study evaluated possible predictors of long-term opioid usage among patients with ureteric stones who received ureteroscopy (URS) or shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). We also assessed opioid usage characteristics of URS and SWL recipients.This retrospective study used IQVIA PharMetricsThe study population consisted of opioid naive individuals having a diagnosis of a kidney stone who underwent URS (N = 9407) or SWL (N = 4894). About 6.7% (N = 964) of study subjects were long-term opioid users. Unadjusted bivariate associations showed that compared to non-long-term opioid users, long-term opioid users had significantly greater total days' supply, total morphine milliequivalents (MME) supplied, and claims per month. A similar trend was observed for URS (vs. SWL) recipients. However, compared to SWL recipients, URS recipients had 14.3% (1.2-25.6%; p = 0.034) lower odds of becoming long-term users. Total days' supply (OR: 1.041 (95% CI 1.030-1.052; p 0.001) and total MME supplied (OR 1.001 (95% CI 1.000-1.001; p 0.001) were significantly associated with long-term usage.Higher total days' supply and total MME supplied as well as SWL were identified as risk factors for becoming long-term opioid users.

Colostomy is often a life-saving procedure but is still associated with significant morbidity. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effect of colostomy empowerment program (CEP) for mothers on occurrence of peristomal skin complications among their infants. Design: Quasi -experimental design was utilized. Sample: A convenient sample of 60 infants undergoing colostomy operation and their mothers. Setting: The current study conducted in three settings at Cairo University Specialized Pediatric Hospital (CUSPH) (surgical neonatal intensive care unit, in-patient surgical unit, and the out-patient surgery clinic).Tools for data collection: Tool I structured interview questionnaire; Tool II mothers’ knowledge and reported practice assessment sheet pre-posttest; Tool III observational checklist and tool IV complications recording sheet. Results: There were statistically significant differences regarding total mean score of mothers' knowledge, reported practice and skills in both groups. Peristomal skin complications were higher in the control group. Conclusion: The current study concluded that after CEP, there was a significant improvement in the level of knowledge, reported-practices, and skills among mothers in the study group. Infants in the study group were exposed to less postoperative complications regarding peristomal skin complications than infants in the control group.

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disrupted the delivery of elective surgery in children. We introduced guidance to mitigate this impact. By reviewing the outcomes for inguinal herniotomies, we aimed to determine if this guidance has enabled us to prevent an increase in the elective surgery wait time and therefore the need for emergency surgery for incarcerated hernias. This report aims to share our learnt lessons about responding to a crisis limiting accessibility to elective surgery. Results We performed a retrospective review of all elective and emergency herniotomies performed between April 1 and September 30, 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and the same period in 2020 (post-COVID-19). We compared the data on wait time from referral to clinic review/elective surgery and incarceration rates. During the study period in 2019, 76 elective herniotomies were performed compared to 46 in 2020. We did not observe a simultaneous increase in emergency herniotomies in 2020 (27 [2020] vs 25 [2019], OR [95% CI] = 1.53 [0.79–2.9]; p = 0.2). The median time from referral to elective surgery in 2019 compared to 2020 did not differ (56 vs 59 days, respectively; p = 0.61). In 2020, 72% of children that required emergency surgery had not been previously referred to our service and the median age (interquartile range) at which they presented with an incarcerated hernia was 2.8 months (2.1–13.7 months). Conclusion By adhering to local guidelines for resumption of elective activity, the pandemic did not result in children waiting longer to be seen by a surgeon for a suspected inguinal hernia. As a result, we did not perform more emergency herniotomies. Urgent prioritisation of hernias in infants, from birth up to 3 months old, was a beneficial strategy. Public health education on childhood hernias will improve outcomes.

Bioenergy is one of several renewable energy options derived from biomass that can help satisfy our energy needs. Anaerobic digestion is a viable method for producing bioenergy in the form of biogas from biomass. The anaerobic digestion process is challenged with low biogas recovery, and low-quality effluent or CO2 emission, which contribute to environmental pollution and the carbon footprint in the atmosphere. Computational process modelling and simulation can provide realistic information for dealing with the technological challenges involved with anaerobic digestion. In this study, modeling and simulation of the simplified anaerobic digestion process were done using SuperPro Designer software fed with biomass feedstock containing carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as yeast, at 37 °C mesophilic temperature. The anaerobic digestion process yielded 89.655% of CH4 and 10.345% of CO2 and confirmed that the carbohydrate feedstock produces more CH4 composition in the biogas. Mineralization of CO2 using MgO yielded 0.23% MgCO3, consuming > 99% of the CO2 produced during the anaerobic digestion process. Environmental impact assessment of the effluent discharge yielded 0.142 kg Slds/L volatile solid with 6.01% COD reduction per batch of the anaerobic digestion process in an anaerobic digester with 90% (1.925 kg/batch) feedstock dosage. The data indicate that single-batch effluent cannot be discharged into the environment, hence indicating the possible recycling for multiple anaerobic digestion processing. The results are a significant guide for the realistic scalable production of high-quality biogas for bioenergy application, CO2 mineralization, and environmental remediation.

Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) is a widely used corticosteroid for various ophthalmological indications. We report a case of a 27-year-old female presented with upper eyelid edema and punctate corneal erosions and haze of the left eye, 1 week after pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil (SO) tamponade and intravitreal TA for diabetic tractional retinal detachment. The condition persisted despite topical and systemic therapy. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the orbits was obtained to exclude postoperative SO migration. The scan showed a hyperintense lesion in the vitreous cavity of the left eye with no SO migration. The radiographic appearance of the lesion mimicked a foreign body; however, history and recent operative note excluded this possibility. A CT scan of various TA preparations revealed that the lesion’s density is similar to those of TA. Improvement of corneal haze confirmed that the lesion was consistent with intravitreal TA. The patient developed eyelid edema of the right eye and later was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome after further investigation. In conclusion, it is important to be familiar with the radiographic appearance of TA on CT to avoid incorrect diagnosis.

Acetaminophen (APAP) is a worldwide antipyretic as well as an analgesic medication. It has been extensively utilized during the outbreak of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). APAP misuse would lead to liver injury. Diacerein (DIA), an anthraquinone derivative, has antioxidant and inflammatory properties. Hence, this study attempted to evaluate the impact of DIA treatment on liver injury induced by APAP and its influence on nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) /toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/high mobility group box-1(HMGB-1) signaling as well as the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) expression.Male albino rats received 25 as well as 50 mg/kg/day DIA orally for seven days. One hour after the last administration, rats received APAP (1gm/kg, orally). For histopathological analysis, liver tissues and blood were collected, immunohistochemical (IHC) assay, biochemical assay, as well as quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).DIA markedly reduced liver injury markers and ameliorated histopathological changes. Moreover, DIA dose-dependently alleviated oxidative stress status caused by APAP administration along with inflammatory markers, including the level of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), myeloperoxidase (MPO), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Furthermore, DIA downregulated protein levels as well as mRNA of HMGB-1, TLR4, NF-κB p65 expression, and enhanced PPAR-γ expression. Moreover, DIA ameliorated apoptotic (Bax) and caspase-3 expressions and increased the anti-apoptotic (Bcl2) expression.This study demonstrated that DIA exerts anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties against liver injury induced by APAP that is attributed to inhibition of the HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB pathway, besides upregulation of the expression of PPAR-γ.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of cardiovascular events. This study aimed to assess the frequency of inappropriate medication dosages (IMD) for cardiovascular disease prevention among patients with CKD and its predictors in an urban academic primary care clinic in Selangor, Malaysia. All patients who attended the clinic from April to June 2019 and fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in this cross-sectional study, except for those with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of more than 90 ml/min, diagnosed with urinary tract infection, pregnant or were on dialysis for end stage renal disease. Their prescriptions on the electronic medical record (EMR) system were evaluated for appropriateness using the dose adjustment recommendations based on the 2018 Malaysian Clinical Practice Guidelines on management of CKD. A total of 362 medical records were included in this study. 16.6% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 12.9–20.8) or 60 out of 362 of the patient records analysed contained medications prescribed with inappropriate dosages. Patients with higher stages of CKD were associated with higher odds of IMD, namely CKD stage G3b (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] 10.41; 95% CI: 2.31–46.88) and CKD stage 4–5 (aOR 15.76; 95% CI: 3.22–77.28). Other predictors of IMD were diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (aOR 6.40; 95% CI: 2.15–19.01), number of prescribed medications of 5 or more (aOR 4.69; 95% CI: 1.55–14.20), and eGFR reduction of more than 25% over one year (aOR 2.82; 95% CI: 1.41–5.65). Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the occurrence of IMD for CVD prevention was low in CKD patients in this primary care clinic. Medications with inappropriate dosages identified in this study include simvastatin, fenofibrate, hydrochlorothiazide, spironolactone, metformin, gliclazide, sitagliptin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin. Clinicians should consider the predictors of inappropriate medication dosages listed above when prescribing to patients with CKD to reduce the risk of medications-related toxicities and adverse effects. Limitations of this study should be considered when interpreting the findings presented.

Microcystin-leucine-arginine (MCLR) is the most abundant cyanotoxin produced by cyanobacteria. It induces potent cytotoxicity through oxidative stress and DNA damage. Thymoquinone (TQ) is a natural nutraceutical antioxidant derived from black cumin (Nigella sativa). Physical exercise (EX) improves whole-body metabolic homeostasis. Therefore, this study examined the protective role of swimming exercise and TQ against MC-induced toxicity in mice. Fifty-six healthy adult male albino mice (25–30 g) were randomized into seven groups; group (I) was the negative control and received oral physiological saline for 21 days; group (II) received water EX for 30 min daily; group (III) was intraperitoneally injected with TQ (5 mg/kg daily, for 21 days); group (IV) was intraperitoneally administered MC (10 μg/kg daily, for 14 days) and acted as the positive toxic control; group (V) was treated with MC and water EX; group (VI) was injected with MC and TQ; finally, group (VII) was treated with MC with TQ and water EX. In comparison with the control group, the results showed hepatic, renal, and cardiac toxicity in the MCLR-treated group, indicated by a significant increase ( p < 0.05 ) in serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT), cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB), urea, creatinine, interleukin-6, interleukin -1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α levels. In addition, there were significant elevations ( p < 0.05 ) in malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels and a significant decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in hepatic, cardiac, and renal tissues. Treatment with either TQ or water EX significantly improved (p < 0.05) the MC-induced toxicity with superiority of the TQ group in the restoration of normal ranges; however, cotreatment with both TQ and swimming EX showed the most improvement and restoration to normal ranges as a result of increasing EX clinical efficacy by TQ.

In this paper, we introduce novel fast matrix inversion algorithms that leverage triangular decomposition and recurrent formalism, incorporating Strassen's fast matrix multiplication. Our research places particular emphasis on triangular matrices, where we propose a novel computational approach based on combinatorial techniques for finding the inverse of a general non-singular triangular matrix. Unlike iterative methods, our combinatorial approach for (block) triangular-type matrices enables direct computation of the matrix inverse through a nonlinear combination of carefully selected combinatorial entries from the initial matrix. This unique characteristic makes our proposed method fully parallelizable, offering significant potential for efficient implementation on parallel computing architectures. Our approach demonstrates intriguing features that allow the derivation of recurrent relations for constructing the matrix inverse. By combining the (block) combinatorial approach, with a recursive triangular split method for inverting triangular matrices, we develop potentially competitive algorithms that strike a balance between efficiency and accuracy. We provide rigorous mathematical proofs of the newly presented method. Additionally, we conduct extensive numerical tests to showcase its applicability and efficiency. The comprehensive evaluation and experimental results presented in this paper confirm the practical utility of our proposed algorithms, demonstrating their superiority over classical approaches in terms of computational efficiency.

Escherichia coli, as a global source of antimicrobial resistance, is a serious veterinary and public health concern. The transmission of pathogenic multidrug-resistant (MDR) E. coli within diarrheic calves and its correlation with Musca domestica and milk strains have been investigated. In total, 110, 80, and 26 E. coli strains were obtained from 70 rectal swabs from diarrheic calves, 60 milk samples and 20 M. domestica, respectively. Molecular pathotyping of E. coli revealed the presence of pathogenic E. coli with a higher percentage of shigatoxigenic strains within diarrheic calves and M. domestica at 46.4% and 34.6%, respectively. Phenotypic antimicrobial resistance revealed higher β-lactams resistance except for cefquinome that exhibited low resistance in M.domestica and milk strains at 30.8% and 30%, respectively. The extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC) resistant strains were detected within fecal, M. domestica, and milk strains at 69.1%, 73.1%, and 71.3%, respectively. Purpose Utilization of sustainable materials is a global demand in the construction industry. Hence, this study aims to integrate waste management and artificial intelligence by developing an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the compressive strength of green concrete. The proposed model allows the use of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), recycled fine aggregate (RFA) and fly ash (FA) as partial replacements of concrete constituents. Design/methodology/approach The model is constructed, trained and validated using python through a set of experimental data collected from the literature. The model’s architecture comprises an input layer containing seven neurons representing concrete constituents and two neurons as the output layer to represent the 7- and 28-days compressive strength. The model showed high performance through multiple metrics, including mean squared error (MSE) of 2.41 and 2.00 for training and testing data sets, respectively. Findings Results showed that cement replacement with 10% FA causes a slight reduction up to 9% in the compressive strength, especially at early ages. Moreover, a decrease of nearly 40% in the 28-days compressive strength was noticed when replacing fine aggregate with 25% RFA. Research limitations/implications The research is limited to normal compressive strength of green concrete with a range of 25 to 40 MPa. Practical implications The developed model is designed in a flexible and user-friendly manner to be able to contribute to the sustainable development of the construction industry by saving time, effort and cost consumed in the experimental testing of materials. Social implications Green concrete containing wastes can solve several environmental problems, such as waste disposal problems, depletion of natural resources and energy consumption. Originality/value This research proposes a machine learning prediction model using the Python programming language to estimate the compressive strength of a green concrete mix that includes construction and demolition waste and FA. The ANN model is used to create three guidance charts through a parametric study to obtain the compressive strength of green concrete using RCA, RFA and FA replacements.
