Abstract

Aim of this work was to assess the composition of the meiofauna in mudflat sediments, undisturbed and near a fresh water sewer. Meiofauna was chosen as a bioindicator, because it adjusts quickly and specifically to environmental changes. A lower diversity and abundance of the seven investigated taxa near the sewer was expected. As no statistically significant differences between the two locations could be found, this hypothesis has to be rejected. However, quantitative differences between meiofauna compositions could be observed. Additionally, a high nematode to copepode ratio in the sewer sediment suggests an influence of changing salinity and water quality. Further analyses of the sewer water is crucial for certain statements. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Zusammensetzung der Meiofauna in Wattsedimenten, ungestört und in der Nähe eines Süßwasserkanals, zu untersuchen. Als Bioindikator wurde Meiofauna gewählt, weil sie sich schnell und gezielt an Umweltveränderungen anpasst. Es wurde eine geringere Diversität und Abundanz der sieben untersuchten Taxa in Kanalnähe erwartet. Da keine statistisch signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Standorten gefunden werden konnten, muss diese Hypothese verworfen werden. Es konnten jedoch quantitative Unterschiede zwischen den Zusammensetzungen der Meiofauna beobachtet werden. Darüber hinaus deutet ein hohes Verhältnis von Nematoden zu Copepoden im Abwassersediment auf einen Einfluss des sich ändernden Salzgehalts und der Wasserqualität hin. Für bestimmte Aussagen sind weitere Analysen des Abwassers entscheidend.

Abstract

210Pb geochronologies of Cd, Cu, Hg, and Pb fluxes were obtained from the intertidal mudflat sediments of the coastal lagoons Chiricahueto, Estero de Urias, and Ohuira in the Mexican Pacific. The Cu and Hg sediment concentrations at the three lagoons fell within the ranges of 6–76 μg g−1 and 0.1 to 592 ng g−1, respectively; Chiricahueto and Estero de Urias sediments had comparable Cd and Pb concentrations within the ranges of 0.2–2.1 μg g−1 and 10–67 μg g−1, respectively; whereas in Ohuira lagoon, Cd concentrations were lower (0.1–0.5 μg g−1) and Pb concentrations were higher (115–180 μg g−1) than in the other lagoons. The metal fluxes (μg cm−2 y−1) for the three lagoons fell within the ranges of 0.02–0.15 for Cd, 0.7–6.0 for Cu, 0.001–0.045 for Hg, and 0.7–20 for Pb. The Hg pollution in Estero de Urias was attributed to the exhausts of the thermoelectric plant of Mazatlan and the metal enrichment in Chiricahueto and Ohuira was related to the agrochemical wastes from the croplands surrounding these lagoons.

Abstract

International audience; The present study aimed to examine whether the use of dispersant would be suitable for favoring the hydrocarbon degradation in coastal marine sediments without impacting negatively micro- and macrobenthic organisms. Mudflat sediments, maintained during 286 days in mesocosms designed to simulate natural conditions, were contaminated or not with Ural blend crude oil (REBCO) and treated or not with third-generation dispersant (Finasol OSR52). While the dispersant did not lead to an increase of hydrocarbon biodegradation, its use enables an attenuation of more than 55 % of the sediment concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) correlating T-RFLP patterns with the hydrocarbon content and bacterial abundance indicated weak differences between the different treatments except for the mesocosm treated with oil and dispersant for which a higher bacterial biomass was observed. The use of the dispersant did not significantly decrease the macrobenthic species richness or macroorganisms' densities in uncontaminated or contaminated conditions. However, even if the structure of the macrobenthic communities was not affected, when used in combination with oil, biological sediment reworking coefficient was negatively impacted. Although the use of the dispersant may be worth considering in order to accelerate the attenuation of hydrocarbon-contaminated mudflat sediments, long-term effects on functional aspects of the benthic system such as bioturbation and bacterial activity should be carefully studied before.
