After delivering its sample capsule to Earth, the Hayabusa2 spacecraft started its extended mission to perform a flyby of asteroid 2001 CC21 in 2026 and rendezvous with asteroid 1998 KY26 in 2031. During the extended mission, the optical navigation camera (ONC) of Hayabusa2 will play an important role in navigation and science observations, but it has suffered from optical deterioration after the spacecraft’s surface contact with and sampling of asteroid Ryugu. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the telescopic camera (ONC-T) has continued to decrease for more than a year, posing a serious problem for the extended mission. These are problems that could potentially be encountered by other sample-return missions involving surface contact. In this study, we evaluated the long-term variation of ONC performance over the 6.5 years following the launch in 2014 to predict how it will perform during observations of the two target asteroids in its extended mission (6 and 11 years from the Earth return, respectively). Our results showed several important long-term trends in ONC performance, such as transmission, dark noise level, and hot pixels. During the long cruising period of the extended mission, we plan to observe both zodiacal light and exoplanet transits as additional science targets. The accuracy of these observations is sensitive to background noise level and stray-light contamination, so we conducted new test observations to search for the lowest stray light, which has been found to depend on spacecraft attitude. The results of these analyses and new test observations suggest that the Hayabusa2 ONC will be able to conduct cruising, flyby, and rendezvous observations of asteroids with sufficient accuracy. Understanding the geological modification processes on asteroids can provide information concerning their surface history. Images of small asteroids from spacecraft show a depletion in terms of smaller craters. Seismic shaking was considered to be responsible for crater erasure and the main driver modifying the geology of asteroids via regolith convection or the Brazil nut effect. However, a recent artificial impact experiment on the asteroid Ryugu by the Japanese Hayabusa2 mission revealed minimal seismic activity. To investigate whether a seismic shaking model can reproduce the observed crater record, the crater distribution on Ryugu was analyzed using crater production functions under cohesionless conditions. Crater retention ages were estimated as a function of crater diameter for Ryugu, Itokawa, Eros, and Bennu using the crater size-frequency distribution and crater production function estimated for those asteroids. We found that the power-law indices "a" are inconsistent with diffusion processes (e.g., seismic shaking, a=2). This result suggests that seismic shaking models based on diffusion equations cannot explain the crater distribution on small asteroids. Alternative processes include surface flows, possibly at the origin of geomorphological and spectral features of Ryugu. We demonstrate that the vertical mixing of material at depths shallower than 1 m occurs over 10^3-10^5 yr by cratering and obliteration. The young surface age of Ryugu is consistent with the slow space weathering that results from cratering, as suggested in previous studies. The timescale (10^4-10^6 yr) required for resurfacing at depths of 2-4 m can be compared with the cosmic-ray exposure ages of returned samples to constrain the distribution of impactors that collide with Ryugu., 30 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. The present study was conducted to reveal characteristic features of albino large rabbit (JW-AKT) which we formerly established a specific pathogen-free (SPF) colony. Body weights of JW-AKT rabbit at 52 weeks old was 5.7 ± 0.4 kg in males and 6.4 ± 0.4 kg in females. Weight of body, heart, lung and kidney in JW-AKT rabbit was significantly higher than in Japanese white and New Zealand white rabbits in both sexes. Though the body weight (BW) was rather lower in males, body length and brain weights tended to be higher in males than in females. Since body fat was significantly higher in females, what affects difference in BW is body fat, rather than the physical constitution of female JW-AKT rabbit. No critical sex difference was found in hematological parameters in JW-AKT rabbit. The results indicated that JW-AKT were about 1.5 times larger than the general laboratory rabbits with common properties in hematology. Thus, JW-AKT rabbit could be used as a novel SPF experimental animal model with some advantages in surgical experiments or collection of large amount of biological specimen.
