This article focuses on local initiatives and the agency of residents in the shrinking town of Puolanka in northern Finland. Structural opportunities and constraints shape individual and collective agency in the community, as they steer how people create and develop initiatives. We discuss how local initiatives impact the sense of place among those who would like to stay in their rural hometown. A group of local activists facetiously market Puolanka as the ‘most pessimistic town’ in the world, turning shrinkange, decay, and pessimism into the town's brand. Beyond the pessimism brand several other initiatives, which are either created by engaged local residents or are municipality-led, are revitalizing and enhancing the liveability of Puolanka. By applying ethnographic research methods, we aim to show how initiatives improve the well-being and contribute to the place perception of residents. Such initiatives create jobs, albeit usually in small numbers, improve the physical space, stabilize the sense of community and can bring hope to a place characterized by increasing abandonment, decay, and the loss of local services.

Parental physical illnesses can be stressful for children. We estimated the prevalence of children who experience parental physical illnesses, and whether parental physical illnesses during childhood were associated with behavioral problems in adolescence. Data on children from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 was collected through questionnaires at ages 8 and 16 (n = 7037). Data on parental illness diagnosed during this study period was obtained from health registers. We investigated the association between parental physical illness (based on the International Classification of Diseases) and children’s behavioral problems at age 16 (measured by the Youth Self-Report questionnaire). During the study period, 3887 (55.2%) children had a parent with at least one physical illness. Associations were found between parental physical illness and children’s behavioral problems, with most associations found between maternal illness and males’ externalizing problems, and females’ internalizing problems. After adjusting for child behavioral problems at age 8, parental psychiatric illness and socioeconomic status, and multiple testing correction, only associations between parental physical illness and male behavioral problems were significant. Interestingly, parental illness was associated with lower problems. A notable proportion of children experience parental physical illnesses. Although mixed, our findings suggest that the impact of parental physical illness on children’s behavioral problems is complex, and that the experience of parental illness may lead to resilience in males. This study emphasizes that children’s needs should be taken into account when treating a parent with physical illness.

Aims: Rates of parental separation have increased dramatically in recent decades. We evaluated the association of individuals’ childhood family structure with their somatic health over 46 years of follow-up. Methods: Data were drawn from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort, an ongoing project in which 12,058 participants born in 1966 have been followed from their 24th gestational week. Based on information supplied at age 14 years, family structure was categorised as ‘single-parent family’ and ‘two-parent family’. The anthropometric information, data from blood samples and medical history were collected from postal questionnaires and clinical examinations routinely performed at the ages of 31 and 46 years. Results: The study population comprised a total of 10,895 individuals; 85% ( n=9253) were offspring of two-parent families and 15% ( n=1642) of single-parent families. Background Dental fear is a prevalent phenomenon among children and adolescents globally. Aim To investigate dental fear among 18-year-olds with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) at their final follow-up cleft clinic visit, and to evaluate the association between dental fear and OHRQoL. Design This cross-sectional study included the cohort of children with CLP treated at the Oulu University Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate Center, in northern Finland since 1995. A total of 62 of 64 individuals participated in this study. The validated Finnish version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to assess OHRQoL. Dental fear was studied using the validated Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) and cognitive vulnerability model (CVM). Results Almost two fifths of the participants reported moderate dental fear. Participants with cleft including lip and participants reporting impact on OHRQoL reported higher mean MDAS scores. In an unadjusted model, adolescents with cleft including lip had risk for higher dental MDAS scores compared with the ones with cleft including only palate. Conclusions Dental fear is common among adolescents with CLP, specifically among those with clefts involving the lip. OHRQoL and dental fear seem to be associated.

Purpose: iCare tonometers are easy-to-use and portable devices for measuring the intraocular pressure (IOP). Purpose was to evaluate the IOP values measured by both novel iCare ic100 and conventional model TA01i devices in unselected population. Methods: IOP was measured with iCare ic100 and TA01i tonometers in 149 participants aged 32–33 years (born in 1985 or 1986) of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort Eye 2 study. The right eye of each participant was selected for analysis. We also collected data on axial length, corneal curvature and central corneal thickness (CCT). Bland-Altman plot was used for comparing the values obtained by these devices. Results: Mean IOP measured with the ic100 device was 13.8 (3.4) mmHg, with TA01i it was 12.5 (3.0) mmHg. The mean difference between these devices was 1.30 mmHg ( p 2 was 0.694. In Bland-Altman analysis, the agreement between the two tonometers ic100 and TA01i was constantly good (mean difference −1.30, ic100 device showing higher measures). There was a correlation between IOP and CCT ( r = 0.269, p Conclusion: In summary, we found ic100 rebound tonometry to be both reliable and effective, although CCT may influence IOP measurements with ic100 and TA01i. Therefore, iCare ic100 is suitable for IOP measurement in large cohort studies.

ObjectiveTo study whether the incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) varies between geographic regions of Finland.MethodsBy utilizing the nationwide Causes of Death and Hospital Discharge Registers, we identified all first-ever, hospitalized, and sudden-death (dying before hospitalization) SAH events in Finland between 1998 and 2017. Based on the patients' home residence, we divided SAHs into 5 geographic regions: southern, central, western, eastern, and northern Finland. We calculated crude and European age-standardized (European Standard Population [ESP] 2013) SAH incidence rates for each region and used a Poisson regression model to calculate age-, sex-, and calendar year–adjusted incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals for regional and time-dependent differences.ResultsDuring the total 106,510,337 cumulative person-years, we identified 9,443 first-ever SAH cases, of which 24% resulted in death before hospitalization. As compared to western Finland, where the SAH incidence was the lowest (7.4 per 100,000 persons), the ESP-standardized SAH incidence was 1.4 times higher in eastern (10.2 per 100,000 persons; adjusted IRR, 1.37 [1.27–1.47]) and northern Finland (10.4 per 100,000 persons; adjusted IRR, 1.40 [1.30–1.51]). These differences were similar when men and women were analyzed independently. Although SAH incidence rates decreased in all 5 regions over 2 decades, the rate of decrease varied significantly by region.ConclusionSAH incidence appears to vary substantially by region in Finland. Our results suggest that regional SAH studies can identify high-risk subpopulations, but can also considerably over- or underestimate incidence on a nationwide level.

ObjectivesA high number of emergency medical service (EMS) patients are not transported to hospital by ambulance. Various non-transport protocols and guidelines have been implemented by different EMS providers. The present study examines subsequent tertiary care ED and hospital admission and mortality of the patients assessed and not transported by EMS in Northern Finland and evaluates the factors predicting these outcomes.MethodsData from EMS missions with a registered non-transportation code during 1 January 2018–31 December 2018 were screened retrospectively. EMS charts were retrieved from a local EMS database and data concerning hospital admission and mortality were collected from the medical records of Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland.ResultsA total of 12 530 EMS non-transport missions were included. Of those, a total of 344 (2.7%) patients were admitted to tertiary care ED in 48 hours after the EMS contact, and 229 (1.8%) of them were further admitted to the hospital. Patients with the dispatch code ‘abdominal pain’, clinical presentation with fever or hyperglycaemia, physician phone consultation and a decision not to transport during night hours were associated with a higher risk of ED admission within 48 hours after EMS contact. Overall 48-hour and 30-day mortalities of non-transported patients were 0.2% (n=25) and 1.0% (n=128), respectively.ConclusionIn this cohort, the rate of subsequent tertiary care ED admission and mortality in the non-transported EMS patients was low. Dispatch code abdominal pain, clinical presentation with fever or hyperglycaemia, physician phone consultation and night-hours increased the risk of ED admission within 48 hours after EMS contact.

This study discusses discursive representations of the inclusion of people with disabilities. Analysing discourses was conducted in the third phase of the author’s mixed-methods study. The study participants lived in a municipality in Northern Finland and were receiving personal assistance services for persons with disabilities. In the analysis results, the participants did not discuss inclusion in their everyday life using formal inclusion-related concepts. Neither did social workers when writing about the participants in their service plans. The findings illustrate how the everyday discourses usually present the inclusion of people with disabilities through and after first representing their exclusion. Representing inclusion of people with disabilities is vague, however dynamic, as representing could eventually lead to the inclusion in the use of language. This study examines the perspectives of Sami community members and university researchers regarding the ethical considerations for engagement in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) with Sami communities in northern Finland. Key informant interviews were conducted with Sami people from Finland who were exposed to or participated in research in their communities as well as with researchers who have conducted research with the Sami in Finland across diverse topics. Five themes were identified: establishing trust, research preparation, research comprehension, research ethics, and inclusion in research. The differences in participant perspectives were compared based on their community versus researcher roles. Our findings emphasize the need for (1) strategies to develop and maintain trust between Sami communities and researchers; (2) methods to bridge concepts of bias projected onto Sami communities and researchers by the others’ differing world views and beliefs about research; and (3) increased education in community-engaged methods for social and natural scientists working with Sami communities. This study supports the need for the development of formalized ethical protocols for conducting community-based engaged research with and for Sami people in Finland that ensure mutually beneficial research for all involved.

The prospects and predictors of returning to the labour market after long-term work disability in psychoses are unclear. Our aim was to study the proportion and characteristics of persons with schizophrenia and other psychoses who return to the labour market after receiving a disability pension. In this 50-year follow-up study in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC1966), national registers on demographics, care, and disability pensions were used to detect and characterize individuals who had been on a disability pension for psychiatric reasons. We compared individuals with schizophrenia (SZ, n = 223) or other psychoses (OP, n = 200) to those with non-psychotic psychiatric disorders (NP, n = 1815) regarding demographics and end of pension by cross-tabulations and logistic regression. Of the 170 (74%) persons with SZ who had been on disability pension for a psychiatric reason, 15 (9%) returned to the labour market. Corresponding percentages were 19% for OP and 28% for NP. In SZ, being married, a later onset age of psychosis, and better school performance, and in OP and NP, having children predicted returning to the labour market. In all groups, a shorter length of the latest disability pension associated with returning to the labour market. Although rare, it is possible to return to the labour market after a disability pension due to psychosis. Factors predicting a return to the labour market could be taken into account when planning rehabilitation.

Vicar Nikolaus Rungius’s (ca. 1560–1629) mummified remains have been the subject of research that has provided a wide variety of information on his life. This article examines the ways Rungius’s health and lifestyle highlight his status as a vicar, and this status is visible in his burial and funerary clothing. He was a relatively large man for his time. CT scans even include indications of certain conditions related to being overweight. Likewise, stable-isotope analyses of his nail keratin support the hypothesis that he was consuming a rather heavy, protein-rich diet. Given his status as the vicar of Kemi parish in northern Finland, he likely made sumptuous use of the rich local natural resources of fish, game, and domestic animals as part of his regular diet. In addition to his diet and health, the vicar’s high-quality clothes, while fragmentary, also open an avenue to extend the exploration of his social status and wealth.

Background/objective Children BMI is a longitudinal phenotype, developing through interplays between genetic and environmental factors. Whilst childhood obesity is escalating, we require a better understanding of its early origins and variation across generations to prevent it. Subjects/methods We designed a cross-cohort study including 12,040 Finnish children from the Northern Finland Birth Cohorts 1966 and 1986 (NFBC1966 and NFBC1986) born before or at the start of the obesity epidemic. We used group-based trajectory modelling to identify BMI trajectories from 2 to 20 years. We subsequently tested their associations with early determinants (mother and child) and the possible difference between generations, adjusted for relevant biological and socioeconomic confounders. Results We identified four BMI trajectories, 'stable-low' (34.8%), 'normal' (44.0%), 'stable-high' (17.5%) and 'early-increase' (3.7%). The 'early-increase' trajectory represented the highest risk for obesity. We analysed a dose-response association of maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and smoking with BMI trajectories. The directions of effect were consistent across generations and the effect sizes tended to increase from earlier generation to later. Respectively for NFBC1966 and NFBC1986, the adjusted risk ratios of being in the early-increase group were 1.08 (1.06-1.10) and 1.12 (1.09-1.15) per unit of pre-pregnancy BMI and 1.44 (1.05-1.96) and 1.48 (1.17-1.87) in offspring of smoking mothers compared to non-smokers. We observed similar relations with infant factors including birthweight for gestational age and peak weight velocity. In contrast, the age at adiposity peak in infancy was associated with the BMI trajectories in NFBC1966 but did not replicate in NFBC1986. Conclusions Exposures to adverse maternal predictors were associated with a higher risk obesity trajectory and were consistent across generations. However, we found a discordant association for the timing of adiposity peak over a 20-year period. This suggests the role of residual environmental factors, such as nutrition, and warrants additional research to understand the underlying gene-environment interplay.

Suicide data for this study were available for the period of March 1988 to June 2011, and involved 2111 male and 494 female victims from the Finnish province of Oulu. Data for lunar phases during that period were categorised into three groups: new moon (75% visible) and other times with values in between. Seasonal effects were controlled with definitions for winter (Nov, Dec, Jan), spring (Feb, Mar, Apr), summer (May, June, July), and autumn (Aug, Sep, Oct). Suicide occurrences during different lunar phases were compared with their expected distribution using multinomial tests with all tests being two-tailed. Statistical significance was set at p p = 0.001). Further analysis of the data revealed that the full moon association was statistically significant only for premenopausal women, defined as female victims younger than 45 years of age. To explain this unexpected finding a number of factors were considered, e.g., the darkness of a northern Finnish winter with increases of SAD and depression especially in premenopausal women, the influence of the lunar periodicity on the menstrual cycle, and cosmogeophysical effects on the humoral and autonomous nervous system.

Harsh parenting can predispose a child to emotional distress, whereas a supportive childhood environment furthers later subjective well-being. We investigated whether the mother’s self-reported assessment of her strictness and the adult offspring’s recollections of the disciplinary methods of their parents are reflected in the adult offspring’s recalled parental images and current emotional distress, anxiety and depression as assessed by the Hopkins Symptom Check List (HSCL-25). Further, we investigated whether the offspring’s parental images were also associated with the HSCL-25 scores. Data was collected from northern Finland. The mothers responded to a questionnaire when their child was seven years old (N = 354) and the adult offspring responded at age 28–29 (N = 337). The mother’s assessment of her own strictness was associated both with the adult offspring’s dominating images of their parents and their current emotional distress, anxiety and depression. The offspring’s recollections of restriction and corporal punishment were associated with dominating parental images, and these images further with current emotional distress, anxiety and depression of the offspring. Correspondingly, the offspring’s recollections of parental dialogic discipline were associated with supportive and sociable parental images, and recalled paternal dialogic discipline was associated with lower current emotional distress, particularly in the female offspring. In conclusion, harsh parenting was associated with dominating parental images, which in turn were associated with emotional distress in adulthood. Dialogic discipline and the father’s role in parenting were emphasized in the offspring’s well-being, but more research is needed to assess the importance of paternity for the offspring’s subjective well-being.

Archives and libraries were visited to find previously unknown documents testifying to the Lurøy, Norway, earthquake of 31 August 1819 in northernmost continental Europe. The focus here is on Sweden, Finland, and Russia, which are important for determining the area of perceptibility east of Norway. The new written sources include 12 notes or entries in original archived documents, six contemporary newspaper reports, and two recollections written down years later. The original documentation uncovered is contributory to establishing the authenticity of the observations in Finland and Sweden. The dates of the original documentation allow tracing of the dissemination of eyewitness accounts in writing from the inner area of perceptibility southward to the larger documentation and population centers. New sources of information include weather reports of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, minutes of its meetings, and correspondence sent to the Senate in Finland. The minutes of meetings of the Academy indicate that ample data were collected in the Swedish province of Västerbotten. We found no original Russian documentation but uncovered national newspapers that are more reliable than the previously used Parisian newspaper. To increase transparency, we provide the first list of macroseismic data points (MDPs) including the respective documentation that testify to the Lurøy earthquake. A macroseismic intensity was assigned to a locality, using the European Macroseismic Scale of 1998, when adequate information was available. Accounting for the uncertainty of intensity assessment, the magnitude was estimated as moment magnitude M=5.9±0.2, reconfirming the ranking as the largest onshore or nearshore earthquake in the historical seismicity record of Fennoscandia. In addition to the reappraisal of the 31 August 1819 earthquake, a macroseismic map is provided for the earthquake of 17 February 1819, which was felt in northern Finland and Sweden. Some of its MDPs were previously associated with the Lurøy earthquake.

BackgroundThe increasing usage of emergency medical services (EMS) missions is a challenge in modern practice. This study was designed to examine the association of the income level of residential areas on the rate of EMS missions and the frequency of EMS use in these areas.MethodsAll EMS missions for adult patients (>18 years) encountered by one rescue department in Northern Finland between June 2015 and May 2017 were analysed. The area served was categorised into four categories, according to the median annual income of the postal code areas. EMS missions per 1000 person-years, rate of non-transport missions and the number of dispatches to frequent (>4 EMS calls/year and highly frequent (>10 calls/year)EMS users per area were investigated.ResultsThere were 62 759 EMS missions, 34.8% of which resulted in non-transport. The crude rate of EMS dispatches was higher in the low-income area compared with other income areas (133.3 vs 108.9 vs 111.3 vs 73.6/1000 person-years) as well as the rate of high-frequency user dispatches (21.5 vs 11.5 vs 7.2 vs 4.3/1000-person years). The rate of non-transports missions was higher also (69.4 vs 43.4 vs 42.5. vs 30.6/1000 person-years). The highest crude rate of EMS use was found in people older than 65 years living in the lowest income areas (294.8/1000 person-years). After age adjustment, the highest rate of EMS use was found in rural areas with the lowest income (146.3/1000 person-years).ConclusionsThe rate of the EMS missions and non-transport missions differs significantly among different income areas. Resource usage was significantly higher in the low income areas. This information can be used in planning allocation of EMS and preventive healthcare resources.

—Two methods for estimating station anomalies in teleseismic P- and S-wave traveltimes are considered. Both methods employ traveltimes of the conversions from the upper boundary of the mantle transition zone. The first method directly uses traveltimes of the converted waves; in the second method, the sought parameters are estimated based on a simple two-layer model. The both approaches yield commensurate values ​​for the coefficient of correlation between station anomalies of P- and S-waves. The use of the model complicates the calculations but makes it possible to directly obtain the estimates of the average values ​​of the seismic parameters of the mantle. The observation data for northern Finland are used to illustrate the discussed subject.

Background Forest inventories are increasingly based on airborne laser scanning (ALS). In Finland, the results of these inventories are calculated for small grid cells, 16 m by 16 m in size. Use of grid data in forest planning results in the additional requirement of aggregating management prescriptions into large enough continuous treatment units. This can be done before the planning calculations, using various segmentation techniques, or during the planning calculations, using spatial optimization. Forestry practice usually prefers reasonably permanent segments created before planning. These segments are expected to be homogeneous in terms of site properties, growing stock characteristics and treatments. Recent research has developed methods for partitioning grids of ALS inventory results into segments that are homogeneous in terms of site and growing stock characteristics. The current study extended previous methods so that also the similarity of treatments was considered in the segmentation process. The study also proposed methods to deal with biases that are likely to appear in the results when grid data are aggregated into large segments. Methods The analyses were conducted for two datasets, one from southern and the other from northern Finland. Cellular automaton (CA) was used to aggregate the grid cells into segments using site characteristics with (1) growing stock attributes interpreted from ALS data, (2) predicted cutting prescriptions and (3) both stand attributes cutting prescriptions. The CA was optimized for each segmentation task. A method based on virtual stands was used to correct systematic errors in variable estimates calculated for segments. Results The segmentation was rather similar in all cases. The result is not surprising since treatment prescriptions depend on stand attributes. The use of virtual stands decreased biases in growth prediction and in the areas of different fertility classes. Conclusions Automated stand delineation was not sensitive to the type of variables that were used in the process. Virtual stands are an easy method to decrease systematic errors in calculations.

It has been hypothesised that the 2‐year oscillations in abundance of Xestia moths are mediated by interactions with 1‐year Ophion parasitoid wasps. We tested this hypothesis by modelling a 35‐year time series of Xestia and Ophion from Northern Finland. Additionally, we used DNA barcoding to ascertain the species diversity of Ophion and targeted amplicon sequencing of their gut contents to confirm their larval hosts. Modelling of the time‐series data strongly supported the hypothesised host–parasitoid dynamics and that periodic occurrence of Xestia moths is mediated by Ophion. DNA barcodes revealed that Ophion included five species rather than just one while targeted amplicon sequencing verified that Ophion does parasitise Xestia. At least one Ophion species employs 1‐year Syngrapha interrogationis as an alternate host, but it did not detectably affect Xestia–Ophion dynamics. We also demonstrate the previously unrecognised complexity of this system due to cryptic parasitoid diversity., We provide evidence that the periodic fluctuations in abundance of Xestia moths are mediated by Ophion parasitoids. By sequencing the gut contents of adult parasitoids, we provide genetic evidence of their larval hosts. We also demonstrate cryptic diversity in the studied parasitoids.

In recent years we have witnessed a growing contemporary use of Sámi offering places by various actors, for example tourists, the local population and contemporary pagans. Hence, sites that the heritage authorities and researchers have seen as belonging to the past have gained new relevance. Nevertheless, Sámi religion is often presented in museums in relation to history and prehistory. Sámi culture has been presented in museums and exhibitions since the nineteenth century. In pointing out that this long history of museum displays affects how Sámi culture is presented in contemporary museums, Nika Potinkara (2015:41) suggests that we can renew, comment on or question the old presentations. This article explores the representations of Sámi religion in four museums and exhibitions in Northern Finland, and will answer the following research question: How is Sámi religion presented and what kind of themes are present? Here museums are studied as arenas for the dissemination of results of knowledge production. What kind of image of Sámi religion do they share?

Forests, and the politics around them, are posited both as a cause of and solution to the contemporary ecological crisis. This paper explores how rights to forest and rights of forest conceptualisations can re-articulate, and potentially challenge, the problematic dominance of capitalist forest politics in Northern Finland and beyond. Conceptually, the paper combines the debates on rights-to-nature and rights-of-nature. Rights-to-nature is concerned with how people can access and use nature to support their lives. Rights-of-nature, meanwhile, highlights the nature’s intrinsic value and the rights of indigenous peoples. Combining the two perspectives might allow imagining politics of nature that is both ecologically and socially just. Empirically, the paper studies forest politics in Tornio River valley in Northern Finland through an ethnographic case study. The rights- to-nature conceptualisation associates locally with the existing use rights and ownership rights. Rights-to-nature may guarantee access to a forest, but it does not guarantee its existence. Rights-of-nature, meanwhile, associates with strong conservation, nature’s power, and indigenous land rights. However, also the rights- of-nature conceptualisation is unlikely to challenge the gradual degradation of most Northern forests, as these “boring” forests lack both recognised human stewardship and intrinsic value. Thus, in the study area the rights conceptualisations do not decisively challenge the existing forest politics, even if the framings can acquire a more radical content. Overall, this paper shows that transnational rights discourses and conceptualisations entangle with local common senses. The Inari Saami traditionally inhabit the area around Lake Inari in northern Finland. Despite being a minority group among the Saami, the Inari Saami have distinctive cultural traits as well as their own language, which has now about 400–450 speakers, including many children. This makes it a small language community in Wikipedia terms. It is still worth noting that Inari Saami is one of the most successful revitalisation processes in the world. During the last decades the language community has organised language nests for Inari Saami children, and it has taught the language to key members of the middle generation. The third phase of the revitalisation, strengthening the literacy of the language, is now in its initial phase. And this is where Wikipedia comes into play. In my presentation I am going to illustrate how the Inari Saami Wikipedia was born and what were the steps taken by the Inari Saami Language Association to make it all happen. I will also explain how we currently encourage the community to take an active role in developing the Inari Saami Wikipedia. We try to involve people from different backgrounds, but our main focus is on young people and students who can write Wikipedia articles as part of their studies at the University of Oulu and at the Sámi Education Institute (SAKK) in Inari. The ultimate goal is to create content that caters to the needs of the Inari Saami school in Inari and to give schoolchildren the possibility to use Wikipedia in their own language as a resource for assignments and classwork.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess and compare the optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) parameters and image quality parameters obtained by Cirrus HD-OCT, GDxECC and HRT3 in a population-based screening study. Methods: This analysis examined 2566 subjects taking part in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort Eye study. Images with spectral domain OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT 4000), scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT3) and scanning laser polarimetry (GDxECC) were obtained from each subject. The correlation of average and regional parameters of RNFL and ONH between devices was evaluated. Results: The RNFL thickness was 90.9 µm when measured with OCT, 24.6 µm with HRT and 48.1 µm with GDx. There was a high correlation between the disc and cup measurements with the HRT and OCT and the RNFL thickness of the OCT and GDx (r > 0.5). A statistically significant correlation was found between RNFL measurements of the HRT and OCT in the superior, temporal and inferior quadrants. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) signal strength correlated with the image quality parameters of the HRT and GDx. The percentage of good quality images was the lowest with the GDx. Conclusions: The RNFL thickness in Northern Finland birth cohort was at a lower level compared to other studies. The study confirms the difference in measuring ONH parameters between the imaging devices. However, significant correlations between devices were found in the cup volume and cup disc area ratio parameters of the OCT and HRT. The correlations between image quality parameters and glaucoma detection parameters were relatively low.

This article summarizes the results of studies on the exposure of the Finnish Sami people to radioactive fallout and the estimations of the related cancer risk. We also discuss the lifestyle, genetic origin and diet of this population. The Sami people are an indigenous people who live in the northern part of Scandinavia and Finland. The review is based on the available scientific literature of Finnish Sami. The traditional Sami diet, high in animal products, persists in Sami groups still involved in reindeer-herding, but others have adopted the typical diet of western cultures. Studies have consistently shown an overall reduced cancer risk among the Finnish Sami people, except for stomach cancer among the Skolt Sami. Common cancers among the Finnish main population, such as prostate, breast and skin cancer are especially rare among the Finnish Sami. The incidence of cancer among the Finnish Sami are mostly similar to those of the Swedish and Norwegian Sami. To conclude, we observed no effect of radioactive pollution on cancer incidence. The lifestyles and environments of the Sami are changing, and their cancer mortality rate today is similar to that of the majority of the Finnish and western population.

Accurate measurement of Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) from remote sensors is still an on-going topic with many open challenges. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radars (InSAR) offers the possibility of retrieving SWE changes between acquisitions by exploiting the relation between the interferometric phase, the snow depth and the water contained on it. However, it is susceptible to estimation errors due to loss of coherence. Sources of decorrelation in snow have not been exhaustively investigated. Here we present the results from the SWE retrieval during both the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 winters and an analysis of various environmental parameters on the snow coherence using SodSAR (Sodankyla SAR). SodSAR is a 1-10GHz tower-based fully polarimetric SAR with InSAR capabilities operating in northern Finland. Acquisitions were made every 12 hours for the 2019–2020 winter and every 6 hours for the 2020–2021 winter. In-situ instruments are used for validation and comparison.

Aims To identify clusters of health behaviours among Finnish adolescents and examine whether these clusters are associated with body mass index (BMI). Methods The data, drawn from the prospective population-based Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986, comprised a total of 7182 adolescents who replied to a follow-up postal questionnaire at the age 15 to 16. The adolescents were asked about multiple health behaviours, such as physical activity, screen time, cigarette smoking, alcohol use and diet. Adolescents who answered the questions concerning all of these variables were included in the study, yielding a final sample of 4305 subjects. K-means cluster analysis was performed to identify group of adolescents with similar health behaviours. Chi-squared tests were performed to analyse the association between the clusters and BMI. Results Two clusters - Healthy Lifestyle and Unhealthy Lifestyle - were identified for both genders. The values of all the studied variables differed significantly between the clusters identified for both boys and girls. No significant relationship between the identified clusters and BMI was found for either boys or girls. Conclusions It is important to consider multiple lifestyle-related behaviours and trying to identify groups that present probability for developing lifestyle diseases.

Objectives Body mass estimation from skeletal dimensions is a useful tool when studying archeological human samples. Bony articular surface dimensions of the lower limb have frequently been utilized to estimate body size. In the present study, we investigated the association between knee breadth and body mass in a Northern European population. Our study aimed to confirm both methodology and results presented in earlier studies. Materials and methods The study sample consists of 1,290 subjects belonging to the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. Three knee breadth dimensions-femoral biepicondylar breadth, mediolateral breadth of femoral condyles, and mediolateral breadth of the tibial plateau-were measured from subjects' knee PA-radiographs. Measurements and their association with body weight at 31 years were utilized for creating body mass estimation equations using linear regression and reduced major axis regression. Correlations between knee measurements and body weight at three different ages (18, 31, and 46) were also analyzed. Results Positive associations were detected between each knee breadth variable and weight in the total sample and both genders separately. Body mass estimation equations were created for the total sample, for males and for females. R values of the models ranged from 0.38 to 0.74. Median absolute percent prediction errors ranged from 6.89 to 9.72%. The highest correlations were obtained between knee breadth and body weight in early adulthood. Discussion Our large sample confirmed that equations derived from knee breadth dimensions are accurate when estimating body mass of modern humans. Knee breadth measurements clearly have a positive association with body weight in early maturity.

This article draws on a co-productive, arts-based study, in Northern Finland, of 40 children from 10 to 11 years of age. Applying Gilles Deleuze’s idea of the virtual, the author maps the journey of the children’s creative activities, as developed through a series of workshops over one academic year. This article demonstrates how repetitive crafting and photographing can accelerate an actualisation of expansive ideas of gender and ‘self-hood’, ideas emerging in manners that disrupt rigid expectations of girlhood and boyhood.

Background According to previous studies, gender-related differences have been found in relation to the experience of well-being. There are also research results indicating that environment and seasonal variation have an influence on the well-being. Aim The aim of the study was to describe how adolescent girls living in northern Finland experience nature, winter and seasonal changes and meaning of these to their well-being. Methods In this descriptive, qualitative research, 17 girls aged 13-16 who live in northern Finland participated in five focus group interviews where they presented photographs of nature they took themselves. Participation for the girls was voluntary, and the data were analysed by using content analysis. Findings Three main categories were found: winter which expresses participative and confrontational meanings, natural environment that provides meaningful stimulus and seasonal variations binding experiences. Winter had a dual effect on girls' well-being. Nature's healing elements were described by the girls as invigorating, varying and stimulating of a wide range of senses. Nature offered soothing and revitalising experiences for the girls. On the one hand, seasonal changes were seen as a refreshing change, but on the other hand, the changes were described oppressive and burdensome. Conclusion The girls described how they experienced the multiple elements of nature and environment through different senses. These sensations and feelings seem to transport the girls to a larger experience in which nature and seasonal changes were partially elements that fulfilled the girls' needs but also required adaptation. Relevance to clinical practice This experiential description encourages us to develop new means of promotive actions and brings a novel perspective and understanding about how to incorporate and implement these findings to enhance girls' well-being. Findings from this study need to be understood in this particular context in northern Finland among adolescent girls.

Small vertebral size increases the risk of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Obese individuals have larger vertebral size and potentially lower fracture risk than lean individuals, but scarce data exist on the association between vertebral size and anthropometric measures beyond height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Here, we evaluated several anthropometric measures (height, weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio [WHR], waist-to-height ratio [WHtR], fat mass [FM], lean body mass [LBM], percentage FM [%FM], percentage LBM [%LBM]) as predictors of vertebral cross-sectional area (CSA). We used a representative sample from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 1087), with anthropometric measurements from the ages of 31 and 46, bioimpedance analysis from the age of 46, and lumbar magnetic resonance imaging from the age of 46 years. In our data, height and LBM correlated most strongly with vertebral CSA among both sexes (0.469 ≤ r ≤ 0.514), while WHR, WHtR, %FM, and %LBM had the weakest correlations with vertebral CSA (|r| ≤ 0.114). We conclude that height and LBM have the highest, yet only moderate correlations with vertebral size. High absolute LBM, rather than FM or abdominal mass accumulation, correlates with large vertebral size and thus potentially also with lower osteoporotic vertebral fracture risk.

OBJECTIVES To test the hypothesis that age and body mass index (BMI) at BMI peak during infancy and at BMI rebound in childhood are related to cardiovascular autonomic modulation in adulthood. METHODS At the age of 46 years, a sample (n = 5861) of the participants of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 took part in follow-up examinations. Heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and low-frequency oscillations of systolic blood pressure (LFSBP) were measured during sympathetic stimulus by standing. BMI at various ages was calculated from frequent anthropometric measurements collected from child welfare clinical records. BRS and LFSBP were available for 1243 participants with BMI peak data and 1524 participants with BMI rebound data, and HRV for 2137 participants with BMI peak data and 2688 participants with BMI rebound data. Objective: To examine associations between temperament traits and early retirement intentions. Methods: In the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, we analyzed early retirement intentions at the age 46 according to Cloninger temperament traits at the age 46 (n = 4409) and at the age 31 (n = 3226). Ordinal logistic regression analyses were used. Adjustments were made for marital status, education, work type, job satisfaction, perceived health, and mental health problems. Results: 11% of men and 9% of women had strong retirement intentions. Especially higher harm avoidance was associated with higher early retirement intentions in both sexes at the age of 46. A similar pattern of results, although with weaker associations, was found for temperament assessed at the age of 31. Conclusions: Temperament and especially harm avoidance is related to early retirement intentions.

Background A high number of denied or cancelled HEMS missions are caused by poor weather conditions especially during winter season. Furthermore, many helicopter manufacturers have denied their helicopters to be operated in known icing conditions. Icing is a widely known phenomenon in aviation, but there is a lack of evidence about its influence on HEMS operations and patients. Methods A prospective observational study of HEMS missions in Northern Finland was conducted over a 1-year period in 2017. A patient was included in the study when the use of helicopter was denied or cancelled due to icing weather conditions. Patients were categorised into two groups based on whether definitive treatment was delayed or not according to previously defined end-points. Results During the study period the Finnish northernmost HEMS unit received 1940 missions. A total of 391 missions (20%) could not be operated by helicopter because of poor weather conditions. In 142 of these missions (36%) icing was one of the limiting weather factors. The year-round incidence of icing was 7.3/100 missions. A total of 57 patients were included in the analysis. Icing weather conditions, resulting in denied helicopter flights, caused a delay in definitive treatment for 21 patients (37%). Definitive treatment was more often delayed in trauma and internal medicine patients than in neurological patients. Nevertheless, the patients whose definitive treatment was delayed were located closer to the hospital. The estimated time that would have been saved by helicopter transport was more than 60 min for 10 patients with delayed treatment. Conclusions In this study the incidence of icing weather conditions was substantial compared to all HEMS missions in year 2017. The delay in definitive treatment was accentuated among trauma and internal medicine patients. During the 1-year study period many patients whose definitive treatment was delayed would have had a notable (> 60 min) time saved by helicopter transport. A helicopter equipped with an adequate ice protection system for the weather conditions in Northern Finland would have shortened the delay in patients’ definitive treatment significantly.

The ages and sizes of landslides occurring in seismically active areas can be used to reconstruct the seismic history of the area and estimate the maximum moment magnitudes of past earthquakes. Here, we present a data set of 121 landslides discovered in northern Finland that were analyzed for their morphometric characteristics. We show that 89 debris slide type landslides in the data set are clustered close to known postglacial faults (PGFs) and thus provide information on the characteristics of postglacial paleoseismic events. By using empirical correlations between the landslide volume–area data and earthquake moment magnitude, we estimate maximum moment magnitudes M w ≈ 6.9–7.7 for postglacial earthquakes in the Suasselka, Isovaara–Riikonkumpu, Venejarvi, and Vaalajarvi areas, where earlier estimates based on fault length and displacement have yielded magnitudes varying between M w ≈ 6.5 and 7.5. We also show that the landslides in northern Finland are located within a radius of 35 km from the closest known PGF and that sizes of the landslides decrease as a function of distance from PGFs, hence providing strong empirical evidence for their seismic origin. As far as we are aware, this is the first use of landside data in quantifying postglacial seismicity within the Fennoscandian Shield area.

Radiogenic heat production in Finland has been previously studied using airborne gamma-ray surveys and glacial till measurements alike. For the first time, this paper presents a detailed survey on the spatial variation in radiogenic heat production determined using outcrop samples obtained from all important lithologies of the country. The dataset of 6465 samples represents mostly Mesoarchean (about 2.7 Ga), Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.2-1.8 Ga) and Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.6-1.3 Ga) rocks. Nearly all data are from Precambrian Fennoscandian Shield area, but heat production appears to be highly variable, and above global Archean and Proterozoic averages. Spot readings show an arithmetic average of 1.34 +/- 1.19 mu Wm(-3), and a range from 0.02 to 19.4 mu Wm(-3). The interpolated areal average of the whole area is 1.42 +/- 1.41 mu Wm(-3). The high standard deviation of data is related to the geochemical characteristics of uranium (U), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) resulting in a skewed distribution of heat production. Mesoproterozoic anorogenic rapakivi granites, and late Paleoproterozoic Svecofennian granitoids show the highest heat production values in the range of 3-5 mu Wm(-3). The results show no distinct dependencies of heat production with geological age, metamorphic grade nor seismic P-wave velocity, but an increasing trend of heat production with SiO2 content and decreasing trends of heat production with Fe2O3 content and with rock density are evident. Surface heat flow (44 borehole data values) correlates weakly with heat production (r = 0.35). The general heterogeneity of heat production calls for supporting information from other geophysical methods for better understanding of the thermal state of the lithosphere in Finland and beyond.

One of the inequalities generated by the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is the digital language divide, that is, differences in the online presence of languages and unequal access to information due to the lack of understanding of the available content. The digital language divide is particularly visible in the case of small languages with a low number of speakers. There is a large group of languages with non-existent or irrelevant online presence. This is often the case of the endangered minority languages. The number of language speakers or the level of knowledge of a given language is not sufficient to generate a vital online community. This article presents the current language situation in the European High North with a focus on minority languages: Sámi and Meänkieli languages in Sweden, Sámi and Kven languages in Norway, and Sámi languages in Finland. It also introduces the phenomenon of digital language divide. The article explores the current situation of the minority languages in the European High North in light of their online presence. It responds to the following questions: Is there online presence of the studied minority languages? Is there a need amongst the minorities’ members for more extensive presence? To conclude, the article discusses the possible effects of a language’s underrepresentation.

Background Pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can be linked with multiple site pain (MSP), and may associate with increased pain sensitivity, more frequently among women than men. The aim of the study was to examine the associations of pressure pain threshold (PPT) and tolerance (PPTo) with TMD and associated MSP in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC1966) study. Methods Altogether 1961 NFBC1966 subjects attended clinical medical and dental examination at the Institute of Dentistry, University of Oulu in 2012-2013. Clinical examinations were carried out using a modified Diagnostic Criteria for TMD protocol (DC/TMD). MSP was defined based on questions regarding body pain sites. Additionally, PPT and PPTo were assessed using algometer measurements. Mann-Whitney U-test and Tobit regression models were used to analyse associations between TMD sub-diagnoses, MSP, PPT and PPTo, stratified by sex. Further models were adjusted with anxiety and depressive symptoms, which were assessed using Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) and two-way interaction terms. Results Among females, lower PPT and PPTo were associated with myalgia and arthralgia. Among males, lower PPT and PPTo were associated with MSP-linked TMD. Tobit regression analysis showed significantly lower PPT and PPTo values in the myalgia and arthralgia subgroups among female TMD subjects. Among females, disc displacement with reduction had an inverse association with PPT and PPTo. Among males, lower PPTo was associated with degenerative joint disease and MSP-linked TMD. Conclusions The pain regulatory mechanisms behind TMD act differently between the genders as local TMD among females and MSP-linked TMD among males were associated with pain sensitivity. Significance The study shows that there are differences in the associations of painful TMD with pressure pain tolerance, pressure pain sensitivity and MSP between male and female subjects.

Using numerical filtering techniques allowing to reduce noise from sferics, we are able to clearly study a new type of differently structured very low frequency (VLF) waves above f = 4 kHz at the ground station of Kannuslehto in northern Finland (KAN, MLAT=64.4°N, L=5.5). These emissions are intriguing since they are detected above the local equatorial electron gyrofrequency for the L-shell of Kannuslehto (fce ~ 5- 6 kHz). They are commonly observed at Kannuslehto, but have also been infrequently reported at other stations, sometimes under different names. Their possible common origin and manner of propagation is still under investigation. This paper unifies the nomenclature by regrouping all these waves detected at frequencies higher than the local equatorial 0.5 fce at the L-shell of observation under the name of VLF bursty-patches. We also give a review of the different characteristics of VLF bursty-patches observed by Kannuslehto, which at the moment, is the station with the highest observation rate. We will present recent observations between 2019 and 2021. While these waves have different spectral features, they appeared mostly composed of hiss bursts with durations of a few seconds to several minutes. They also show periodic features with varying periodicity and shape. They are sometimes characterized by single bursts covering very large frequency ranges of several kHz.

Objective: To determine the anterior Bolton ratio for a Finnish adult population and to investigate its associations with overjet. Material and methods: This study is part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. Clinical oral investigations, including three-dimensional intraoral scanning and registration of occlusion, were performed in connection with the 46-year follow-up for 1,961 subjects. Subjects with normal occlusion (n = 149), extreme overjet ≥ 8 mm (n = 49), large overjet 6–7 mm (n = 86), and negative overjet (n = 16) and no orthodontic treatment history were selected for further analysis. The mesiodistal widths were measured from canine to canine to evaluate the anterior Bolton ratio. Results: A mean anterior Bolton ratio of 78.6 (SD 3.1) was found for the normal occlusion group. Subjects with extreme overjet had smaller Bolton ratios compared to the normal occlusion group and the negative overjet group (p = .005, p = .019, respectively). Overjet deviations were associated with upper canine and incisor widths. Conclusions: The mean anterior Bolton ratio in subjects with normal occlusion was larger compared to the original Bolton ratio. Tooth size discrepancy was associated with extreme and negative overjet at population level.

Purpose: The optic nerve head (ONH) is a part of the brain that can be easily studied through the transparent medium of the eye. We explored the relationship between the properties of the optic nerve head, the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and cognitive function. Methods: Participants of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort (NFBC) 1966 underwent an ophthalmic and cognitive assessment after randomization at age 46. The ophthalmological parameters obtained were the disc area and the neuroretinal rim volume of the ONH and the average RNFL thickness. The surrogates used for cognitive function were the paired associates learning test (PAL), level of education, grade point average (GPA) and Humphrey 24–2 perimetric test time (HFA). We did exploratory research between the ophthalmological parameters and the surrogates for cognition and the correlations between the surrogates for cognition. Results: We found that a larger disc area was associated with a higher level of education, faster accomplishment of the HFA (R = −0.065) but a lower GPA (R = −0.084). An increase in neuroretinal rim volume was associated with fewer errors in the PAL test (R = −0.056), higher level of education, higher GPA (R = 0.072) and faster accomplishment of the HFA (R = −0.047). A thicker RNFL was associated with faster accomplishment of the HFA (R = −0.047). Conclusion: We were able to find statistically significant associations between the parameters of the optic nerve head, the RNFL and cognition in the NFBC Eye study. However, the correlations were negligible at best and of limited predictive value.

We evaluated the survival of a subarctic population and the significance of traditional risk factors for mortality, causes of death and their seasonal variation from the period of 1984–2014. By the end of 2014 (follow-up), 644 (34.4% from 1,869) participants had died (42.1% of cardiovascular causes, 22.4% of neoplastic diseases). The average age at death±SD was 74.6±11.4 years for women (n=284) and 70.2±12.0 years for men (n=360). After adjusting for baseline age, the major risk factors predicting death were male sex (hazard ratio [HR] 1.80; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.54–2.10), current smoking (HR 1.85; 95% CI 1.58–2.17), obesity (HR 1.75; 95% CI 1.45–2.12), high blood pressure (HR 1.46; 95% CI 1.24–1.72), cardiovascular disease (HR 1.62; 95% CI 1.36–1.93) and depression (HR 1.61; 95% CI 1.21–2.14) at baseline. The most common causes of death and the main risk factors predicting death in this population were the same as reported globally. Lifestyle factors had an important impact in predicting survival. The most common causes of death were the same for men and women. There was no significant difference in overall mortality rate between winter and summer, but cerebrovascular and pulmonary causes of death were more common during winter.

Pristine boreal peatlands are often considered neutral or even small sinks for nitrous oxide (N2O). However, drained peatlands are a significant source of N2O. In these managed sites, oxygen becomes more available, increasing denitrification and therefore N2O release into the atmosphere. N2O emissions do not typically follow a strong seasonal pattern like carbon dioxide but instead, have high spatial and temporal variability. Short-term N2O peak emissions can be observed after various meteorological or soil management events throughout the year, for example after soil freezing or thawing, or fertilization. However, it is not well known how exactly those events trigger the N2O emission peaks. Therefore, N2O annual budget based on punctual chamber measurement can introduce large uncertainties. That is why it is important to measure N2O emissions with a continuous method to better understand the controlling factors and to estimate the annual budgets more accurately.For the first time in the boreal region of Europe, N2O emissions were continuously observed during a full year in a drained agricultural peatland with the eddy covariance (EC) technique. The study site is a managed peatland in northern Finland, in Ruukki (Latitude: 64.684010; Longitude: 25.106473), with a peat depth between 10 and 90 cm. It is currently managed as a grass field, composed of a mixture of timothy and meadow fescue. We will show a first overview of the N2O fluxes measured since November 2019 with the EC technique. We will present how various meteorological and management events can explain some short-term variations. Then, we will compare the N2O annual budget estimated from the EC measurements to the IPCC emission factor and to different estimates achieved using several sets of non-continuous data points, representing manual chamber measurements with varying frequency.

Crystal habits encode atmospheric conditions. Temperature and relative humidity with respect to ice and liquid water are the microphysical drivers of the growth of snow crystals in terms of shape, size and degree of riming, while cloud thickness and the related growth time of crystals are the dynamical drivers. According to current versions of Nakaya’s habit diagram, rather large and eventually rimed crystals are formed above supersaturation. Below supersaturation compact and unrimed snow crystals are to be expected. In this study, we combine radiosonde profiles with snowflake images captured at the surface by a multi-angle snowflake camera during two-and-a-half winter seasons in Northern Finland (67.367 °N, 26.629 °E). Our objective is to quantify how well crystal habits correspond with what would be expected from radiosonde profiles at this continental site in the Arctic.
