Abstract: The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall below the lower limits expected from calculations based on leading and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Also, the kaon multiplicity ratio shows a strong dependence on the missing mass of the single-kaon production process. This suggests that within the perturbative quantum chromodynamics formalism an additional correction may be required, which takes into account the phase space available for hadronisation., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\omega$ meson muoproduction on the proton at COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Abstract: The $\bar{\rm p} $ over p multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering for the first time using (anti-) protons carrying a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy, $z>0.5$. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam impinging on an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2$ > 1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. The range in Bjorken-$x$ is restricted to $0.01 < x < 0.40$. Protons and antiprotons are identified in the momentum range $20 ��60$ GeV/$c$. In the whole studied $z$-region, the $\bar{\rm p}$ over p multiplicity ratio is found to be below the lower limit expected from calculations based on leading-order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Extending our earlier analysis of the K$^-$ over K$^+$ multiplicity ratio by including now events with larger virtual-photon energies, this ratio becomes closer to the expectation of next-to-leading order pQCD. The results of both analyses strengthen our earlier conclusion that the phase space available for hadronisation should be taken into account in the pQCD formalism., 19 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. In both cases, the amplitudes of the $\cos\phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependences for both positive and negative hadrons. It has been known since some time that the measured final-state hadrons in those SIDIS experiments receive a contribution from exclusive diffractive production of vector mesons, particularly important at large values of $z$, the fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron. In previous measurements of azimuthal asymmetries this contribution was not taken into account, because it was not known that it could distort the azimuthal modulations. Presently, a method to evaluate the contribution of the exclusive reactions to the azimuthal asymmetries measured by COMPASS has been developed. The subtraction of this contribution results in a better understanding of the kinematic effects, and the remaining non-zero $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulation gives indication for a non-zero Boer-Mulders effect., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We have searched for exclusive production of exotic charmonia in the reaction μ + N → μ + ( J / ψ π + π − ) π ± N ′ using COMPASS data collected with incoming muons of 160 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c momentum. In the J / ψ π + π − mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 σ. Its mass and width are consistent with those of the X ( 3872 ) . The shape of the π + π − mass distribution from the observed decay into J / ψ π + π − shows disagreement with previous observations for X ( 3872 ) . The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of X ( 3872 ) with C = − 1 predicted by a tetraquark model. The product of cross section and branching fraction of the decay of the observed state into J / ψ π + π − is determined to be 71±28(stat)±39(syst) pb.

Abstract: We present a precise measurement of the proton longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A 1 p and the proton spin-dependent structure function g 1 p at photon virtualities 0.006 ( GeV / c ) 2 Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 in the Bjorken x range of 4 × 10 − 5 x 4 × 10 − 2 . The results are based on data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN using muon beam energies of 160 GeV and 200 GeV . The statistical precision is more than tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. In the whole range of x , the measured values of A 1 p and g 1 p are found to be positive. It is for the first time that spin effects are found at such low values of x .

Abstract: We present a new amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi$ $D$-wave in $\pi^- p\to \eta\pi^- p$ measured by COMPASS. Employing an analytical model based on the principles of the relativistic $S$-matrix, we find two resonances that can be identified with the $a_2(1320)$ and the excited $a_2^\prime(1700)$, and perform a comprehensive analysis of their pole positions. For the mass and width of the $a_2$ we find $M=(1307 \pm 1 \pm 6)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(112 \pm 1 \pm 8)$~MeV, and for the excited state $a_2^\prime$ we obtain $M=(1720 \pm 10 \pm 60)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(280\pm 10 \pm 70)$~MeV, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a 6 LiD target. The data were taken at 160 GeV beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range 1(GeV/c)2 4GeV/c2 in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry A1d and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function g1d are presented in bins of x and Q2 . Towards lowest accessible values of x , g1d decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final g1d values together with the recently published final g1p values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the g1 world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge a0 , which is identified in the MS‾ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin, is extracted at next-to-leading order accuracy from only the COMPASS deuteron data: a0(Q2=3(GeV/c)2)=0.32±0.02stat±0.04syst±0.05evol . Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function g1p , the results on g1d constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of g1 through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract: Single hadron azimuthal asymmetries of positive and negative hadrons produced in muon semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarised deuterons are determined using the 2006 COMPASS data and also combined all deuteron COMPASS data. For each hadron charge, the dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry on the hadron azimuthal angle $\phi$ is obtained by means of a five-parameter fitting function that besides a $\phi$-independent term includes four modulations predicted by theory: $\sin\phi$, $\sin 2 \phi$, $\sin 3\phi$ and $\cos\phi$. The amplitudes of the five terms have been extracted, first, for the hadrons in the whole available kinematic region. In further fits, performed for hadrons from a restricted kinematic region, the $\phi$-dependence is determined as a function of one of three variables (Bjorken-$x$, fractional energy of virtual photon taken by the outgoing hadron and hadron transverse momentum), while disregarding the others. Except the $\phi$-independent term, all the modulation amplitudes are very small, and no clear kinematic dependence could be observed within experimental uncertainties., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of exclusive single-photon muoproduction on the proton by COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarized $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ beams of the CERN SPS impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. We determine the dependence of the average of the measured $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ cross sections for deeply virtual Compton scattering on the squared four-momentum transfer $t$ from the initial to the final final proton. The slope $B$ of the $t$-dependence is fitted with a single exponential function, which yields $B=(4.3 \ \pm \ 0.6_{\text{stat}}\_{- \ 0.3}^{+ \ 0.1}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}}) (\text{GeV}/c)^{-2}$. This result can be converted into an average transverse extension of partons in the proton, $\sqrt{\langle r_{\perp}^2 \rangle} = (0.58 \ \pm \ 0.04_{\text{stat}}\_{- \ 0.02}^{+ \ 0.01}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\text{fm}$. For this measurement, the average virtuality of the photon mediating the interaction is $\langle Q^2 \rangle = 1.8\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2$ and the average value of the Bjorken variable is $\langle x_{\text{Bj}} \rangle = 0.056$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

14. The Daq Debugger For Ifdaq Of The Compass Experiment

Abstract: In general, state-of-the-art Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) in high energy physics experiments must satisfy high requirements in terms of reliability, efficiency and data rate capability. This paper presents the development and deployment of a debugging tool named DAQ Debugger for the intelligent, FPGA-based Data Acquisition System (iFDAQ) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. Utilizing a hardware event builder, the iFDAQ is designed to be able to readout data at the average maximum rate of 1.5 GB/s of the experiment. In complex softwares, such as the iFDAQ, having thousands of lines of code, the debugging process is absolutely essential to reveal all software issues. Unfortunately, conventional debugging of the iFDAQ is not possible during the real data taking. The DAQ Debugger is a tool for identifying a problem, isolating the source of the problem, and then either correcting the problem or determining a way to work around it. It provides the layer for an easy integration to any process and has no impact on the process performance. Based on handling of system signals, the DAQ Debugger represents an alternative to conventional debuggers provided by most integrated development environments. Whenever problem occurs, it generates reports containing all necessary information important for a deeper investigation and analysis. The DAQ Debugger was fully incorporated to all processes in the iFDAQ during the run 2016. It helped to reveal remaining software issues and improved significantly the stability of the system in comparison with the previous run. Abstract: Modern experiments in high energy physics impose great demands on the reliability, the efficiency, and the data rate of Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ). This contribution focuses on the development and deployment of the new communication library DIALOG for the intelligent, FPGA-based Data Acquisition System (iFDAQ) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The iFDAQ utilizing a hardware event builder is designed to be able to readout data at the maximum rate of the experiment. The DIALOG library is a communication system both for distributed and mixed environments, it provides a network transparent inter-process communication layer. Using the high-performance and modern C++ framework Qt and its Qt Network API, the DIALOG library presents an alternative to the previously used DIM library. The DIALOG library was fully incorporated to all processes in the iFDAQ during the run 2016. From the software point of view, it might be considered as a significant improvement of iFDAQ in comparison with the previous run. To extend the possibilities of debugging, the online monitoring of communication among processes via DIALOG GUI is a desirable feature. In the paper, we present the DIALOG library from several insights and discuss it in a detailed way. Abstract: Proton transverse-spin azimuthal asymmetries are extracted from the COMPASS 2010 semi-inclusive hadron measurements in deep inelastic muon-nucleon scattering in those four regions of the photon virtuality $Q^2$, which correspond to the four regions of the di-muon mass $\sqrt{Q^2}$ used in the ongoing analysis of the COMPASS Drell-Yan measurements. This allows for a future direct comparison of the nucleon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions extracted from these two alternative measurements. Various two-dimensional kinematic dependences are presented for the azimuthal asymmetries induced by the Sivers transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function. The integrated Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive with an accuracy that appears to be sufficient to test the sign change of the Sivers function predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics., 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. It was extracted from measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it turned out to be non-zero for quarks. In this letter the evaluation of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons in the same process is presented. The analysis method is based on a Monte Carlo simulation that includes three hard processes: photon-gluon fusion, QCD Compton scattering and leading-order virtual-photon absorption process. The Sivers asymmetries of the three processes are simultaneously extracted using the LEPTO event generator and a neural network approach. The method is applied to samples of events containing at least two hadrons with large transverse momentum from the COMPASS data taken with a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattered off transversely polarised deuterons and protons. With a significance of more than two standard deviations a negative value is obtained for the gluon Sivers asymmetry. The result of a similar analysis for a Collins-like asymmetry for gluons is consistent with zero., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Precise measurements of charged-kaon multiplicities in deep inelastic scattering were performed. The results are presented in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y, and the fraction z of the virtual-photon energy carried by the produced hadron. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration by scattering 160 GeV muons off an isoscalar 6 LiD target. They cover the kinematic domain 1 (GeV/c)2 < Q2 < 60 (GeV/c)^2 in the photon virtuality, 0.004 < x < 0.4, 0.1 < y < 0.7, 0.20 < z < 0.85, and W > 5 GeV/c^2 in the invariant mass of the hadronic system. The results from the sum of the z-integrated K+ and K- multiplicities at high x point to a value of the non-strange quark fragmentation function larger than obtained by the earlier DSS fit., 10 pages, 9 figures

20. Developing Model-Based Design Evaluation for Pipelined A/D Converters

Abstract: This paper deals with a prospective approach of modeling, design evaluation and error determination applied to pipelined A/D converter architecture. In contrast with conventional ADC modeling algorithms targeted to extract the maximum ADC non-linearity error, the innovative approach presented allows to decompose magnitudes of individual error sources from a measured or simulated response of an ADC device. Design Evaluation methodology was successfully applied to Nyquist rate cyclic converters in our works [13]. Now, we extend its principles to pipelined architecture. This qualitative decomposition can significantly contribute to the ADC calibration procedure performed on the production line in term of integral and differential nonlinearity. This is backgrounded by the fact that the knowledge of ADC performance contributors provided by the proposed method helps to adjust the values of on-chip converter components so as to equalize (and possibly minimize) the total non-linearity error. In this paper, the design evaluation procedure is demonstrated on a system design example of pipelined A/D converter. Significant simulation results of each stage of the design evaluation process are given, starting from the INL performance extraction proceeded in a powerful Virtual Testing Environment implemented in Maple™ software and finishing by an error source simulation, modeling of pipelined ADC structure and determination of error source contribution, suitable for a generic process flow.

Abstract: This work presents an thorough analysis and design of a low-voltage low-power voltage reference circuit with sub-bandgap output voltage. The outcome of the analysis and the resulting design rules are universal and it is supposed to be general and suitable for similar topologies with just minor modifications. The general analysis is followed by a selection of specific topology. The given topology is analyzed for particular parameters which are standard industrial circuit specifications. These parameters are mathematically expressed, some are simplified and equivalent circuits are used. The analysis and proposed design procedure focuses mainly on versatility of the IP block. The features of the circuit suit to low-voltage low-power design with less than 10μA supply current draw at 1.3V supply voltage. For testing purposes a complex transistor level design was created and verified in wide range of supply voltages (1.3 to 3.3V) and temperatures (-45 to 95°C) all in concrete 0.35μm IC design process using Mentor Graphics® and Cadence® software.

Abstract: This paper deals with the implementation issues of building Virtual Testing Environment (VTE) for performance extraction of A/D converters. Here, the term "virtual" implies to the fact that the ADC testing is done yet in the circuit design on a base of an ADC model capable to capture the ADC error sources occurring in the integrated circuit structure. The first part of the contribution concerns significant properties of two proposed VTE algorithm implementations, the first one employing Verilog-A behavioral module and the second which is created in Maple environment with built-in libraries for circuit analysis. The performance of both VTE implementations is evaluated at system-level and by simulation of residual non-linearity with an ideal ADC model. Throughout the article, a stress is given to the building procedure which was necessary to create VTE capable to work both on Verilog-A and Maple platform.

Abstract: This paper deals with a new concept of virtual testing engine for analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs). The whole system consists of program procedures to extract the most important ADC errors expressed in terms of integral and differential non-linearity (INL and DNL). The developed testbench is especially suitable for educational purpose because of modular conception of the system. The proposed testing engine is implemented in Maple™, bringing an ideal possibility to make a complex system for the simulations of ADC at the virtual level as well as at the circuit level. The system is a part of a complex environment using the Servo-loop and the Histogram method, combining their features so as to obtain high level of versatility. However, in this paper we concentrate only on the results from the Servo-loop method. The Servo-loop solution proposed here employs an effective search algorithm and improves convergence properties resulting in a significant reduction of the simulation time.

Abstract: This paper deals with the development of automated design procedure (ADP) of analog building blocks dedicated for full-custom integrated circuit design of an operational amplifier (OpAmp). The design procedure proposed is divided into consecutive steps starting from the technology and model card choice followed by the selection of basic blocks for the OpAmp design. Subsequently, the established OpAmp architecture enters an advanced optimization aided by differential evolutionary algorithms. As a result, a robust set of circuit parameters attached to the OpAmp design is obtained, respecting the multi-criterion requirements for analog performance.

Abstract: One of the recent approaches for A/D converter performance extraction is the so-called Servo-Loop method. In this paper, we build an improved version of this method targeted to full transistor-level circuit simulation of static integral and differential non-linearity. In comparison with the conventional implementation, the Servo-Loop version proposed was enhanced by a powerful search algorithm. Subsequently, this paper deals with the description of a versatile Servo-Looper tool developed in Verilog-A language suitable for direct co-operation with most of the analog and mixed-signal simulators used in industry. Powerful capabilities of the proposed Servo-Looper tool were successfully confirmed by a large simulation set performed on a full custom ADC design example. The presented paper brings the most significant results of the ADC simulation procedure.

Another advantage of the proposed approach is the fact that the implementation in MAPLE creates an ideal opportunity to build a complex environment comprising the virtual testing engine as well as circuit-level ADC models. Simulation results are shown, demonstrating the output of the ADC testing procedures using both the Servo-Loop and Histogram method.

27. A Novel Design Evaluation Concept Applied to Switched-Current Algorithmic A/D Converters

Abstract: Currently used design evaluation approaches of A/D converters are often based on ad-hoc methods using the designer's intuition and previous experience. The verification process carried out in this "trial and error" way usually takes an exhaustive time, with no possibility of subsequent design optimization and device calibration. In this paper we propose a novel design evaluation concept suitable for Nyquist-rate A/D converters capable to overcome all the above-mentioned problems. The core of our methodology is a root-cause identification of the error sources present in the ADC structure, evaluating the performance degradation by static non-linearity in a series of consecutive steps. For this purpose, the recently introduced technique of LEMMA (linear error mechanism modeling algorithm) is used, oriented to systematical decomposition of the ADC structure. The proposed methodology was successfully verified on a design example of switched-current (SI) algorithmic ADC, as it is introduced and thoroughly described in this paper

28. A versatile structure of S31-GGA-casc switched-current memory cell with complex suppression of memorizing errors

Abstract: This contribution describes the circuit structure of high precision S31-GGA-casc switched-current (SI) memory cell providing complex suppression of memorizing errors. The low-frequency relative current error caused by charge-injection and input/output conductance ratio is typically 50 ppm. Moreover, the DC current offset of this cell type is lower than 0.2 /spl mu/A within the signal range of 350 /spl mu/A. At this point, excellent DC stability was achieved by a new solution of current biasing circuitry. The cell provides optimized input/output impedance ratio which can further minimize the errors arising in a SI system. All the results were proven by circuit simulation and chip measurement. In the field of circuit testing, a new concept of high-precision current-sensing circuit was invented and it is also being described in this paper.

Abstract: This paper describes a new type of universal functional block called U4TIA suitable for implementation all the known types of amplifiers (VOA, COA, OTA, TIA) and their adjoined counterparts. The first part of this paper deals with the basic structure of U4TIA. A simple implementation by using conventional TIA or current-conveyors (CCII) is shown. The second part is devoted to the description of current op-amp based on U4TIA which is adjoined to the voltage-op-amp. Such COA shows current gain approximately 10/sup 4/ and it can be used for fast and precision current amplifier with GBP>400 MHz. This is documented by results of amplifier simulation by MAPLE and PSPICE using professional model AD 844.

30. [Detection of cerebropathy in neurologic and psychiatric diseases]

Abstract: The authors made a comprehensive examination of 16 patients--epileptics, alcoholics, psychotic subjects and patients after cerebral contusion. The patients were subjected to a neurological, psychiatric, psychological examination as well as to a morphological examination (X-ray, CT, NMR), physiological examination (EEG, polysomnography, evoked potentials), immunological examination and SPECT. The majority of patients had positive CT and SPECT findings suggesting focal brain damage. These results could be explained only in exceptional cases by injury, the majority was of unknown aetiology. With this corresponded focal EEG abnormalities and in particular sleep disorders, sometimes subjective but always detectable by objective methods. There was always a shortage of REM, sometimes also NONREM sleep. Half the patients were subjected to an immunological examination which was always positive and comprised elevated acute stage proteins and proteins associated with the stress reaction. Numerous data in the literature and the authors' experience indicate that the mentioned pathological findings are not incidental and form, independently on the aetiology, an integrated unit for which the term cerebropathy can be used. A primary role is played by the epileptic focus and its quality, i.e. above all the rate of discharge and site and humoroergic systems of the brain stem, in particular their efficiency and mutual balance. The events have a programmed sequence. At the beginning an epileptic focus develops which influences the surrounding area, secondary and tertiary foci are formed and the thalamo-cortical system is affected. Soon this is followed by an apparent influence of the epileptic activity on structures of the brain-stem. The consequence are changes affecting sleep, mood, mental performance, immunity, endosecretion and paroxysms. Subsequently individual symptoms are already prepared but have a different latency of manifestation and the latter depends also on external provoking influences. The thalamo-cortical reaction is characterized by the manifestation of epileptic paroxysms and sets in after a different interindividual incubation following injury. The same applies to the hippocampal reaction manifested by the organic psychosyndrome. Some symptoms such as changes of immunity, sleep or endosecretory function are not necessarily manifested if the influence of the focus on structures of the brain-stem is not sufficiently intense. Conversely if the effect on the brain-stem and limbic structures is greater and the effect on the thalamo-cortical system smaller, psychotiform behaviour develops. Then there are marked changes of phoria, dynamogeny, rate, affectivity, sleep and hormonal secretion and its equilibrium.

31. Neurohumoral relations in neurological and psychiatric patients

Abstract: Sixteen patients-epileptics, alcoholics, psychotics and post-contusion cases-were subjected to neurological, psychiatric, psychological, morphological (X-ray, CT, NMR), physiological (EEG, polysomnography, evoked potentials), immunological and SPECT examination. Most had CT and SPECT signs of focal brain damage. The results were but exceptionally due to injury, most were of unknown etiology. This tallied with EEG focal abnormalities, mainly sleep disorders, sometimes subjective ones, but invariably detectable objectively. In each case there was REM, in some also NONREM sleep deficiency. Half of the cases were tested immunologically, each time with positive results: increased levels of acute-phase protein and stress-reaction proteins. As copious literature and our experience show, the above pathological condition, rather than being accidental, constitute regardless of etiology, an integrated entity which could be called "programme cerebropathy". The primary role is played there by the epileptic focus and its properties, in particular, the speed of discharge and localization and brain stem humoroergic systems, i.e., their performance and mutual balance. There is a program sequence of events, first, and epileptic focus acting on the neighborhood, the rise of secondary and tertiary foci, and influence over the thalamocortical system. Soon afterwards, epileptic activity begins to act on brain-stem structures. This results in changes in sleep, mood, psychic output, immunity, endosecretion, and in paroxysms.

32. [Consciousness and the electroencephalogram]

Abstract: In the course of 12 years the authors subjected to clinical EEG and stereo-EEG (SEEG) 72 patients (66 epileptics with the diagnosis of psychomotor epilepsy and grand mal) and six psychotic patients suffering from schizophrenia. With the exception of five epileptics and two psychotic patients all subjects had epileptic foci in the amygdalohippocampal complex (AHK). After coagulation of these foci marked improvement of the fits and the mental state occurred in half the patients. During EEG and SEEG recording the authors used different activation methods (hyperventilation through the nose and mouth, sleep, listening to music) and above all direct electric stimulation (ES) of one of the AHK. Secondary epileptic foci had, as a rule, more spikes and a lower threshold for ES than primary ones which contained more delta and slow theta waves. The ES led as a rule to an emotional response, such as anxiety and fear, more rarely to illusions, depersonalization and oneiroid hallucinations and twice to a hedonic response of non-sexual character. The purpose of ES was to assess the site from where it is possible to start the original aura or typical parox. The authors considered these foci, consistent with data in the literature, as the leading focus and it was subsequently coagulated. The authors investigated the reactivity and vigility by the patient's response to sound (the patient had to press a button) and by an interview with the patient. It was revealed that in isolated discharges of the spikes and waves in the scalp electrodes, i.e. in the neocortex, reactivity is lacking. In isolated discharges in the AHK the reactivity was satisfactory, but as a rule anxiety developed. It is thus possible to divide consciousness into emotional consciousness with its site in the AHK, i.e. in the limbic system, and rational consciousness which is a function of the neocrotical system. Congenital changes of consciousness such as vigility or sleep are described as "states" of consciousness. The rational or emotional aspect of behaviour is described as "type" of consciousness. Under normal conditions the states of consciousness alternate periodically and are sharply defined, the types of consciousness are closely linked and are difficult to separate. Under pathological conditions the "states" of consciousness differ less markedly and the "types" of consciousness are in dissociation. Thus obnubilation, depersonalization, illusions, pathic affects etc. develop, as a rule as part of the epileptiform or psychotiform syndrome.

Abstract: Preliminary results in three patients with Parkinson’s disease, who had transplantation of human embryonic mesencephalic tissue into the caput nuclei caudati, are reported. Some improvement was achieved.

Abstract: The authors describe instruments which make it possible to perform retrogasserian thermolesions (RGT), glycerol radiculolysis (GRL) or trigeminal balloon compression (TBC) or possibly a combination of these methods from a single surgical approach. This makes it possible to adjust the selection of the type of lesion to unforeseen conditions any time during the operation. The surgical results are compared in 308 RGT, 50 GRL and 22 TBC. There are no substantial differences and therefore the selection of the type of lesion depends on technical circumstances during operation.

Abstract: 483 patients were operated on one of the percutaneous method. The radiofrequency thermocoagulation, the application of glycerol to the trigeminal cistern and the balloon compression of the ganglion were used. There are no substantial differences in the results and number of recurrences obtained with any of the different lesions. The choice of the type of lesion is often appointed by technical circumstances. The kind of instrumentarium which permits to perform in a single approach one of the three types of trigeminal lesion or there combination was designed.

Abstract: Radiosurgery means delivery of a single dose of precisely directed ionizing radiation to a small volume of intracranial tissue without opening of the skull after the stereotactic localisation of the preselected target. Leksell gamma knife is a device enabling to deliver focused radiation toward the intracranial volume with the gamma rays emitted by the 201 sources of the isotope Co 60. Suitable indications for radiosurgery are cerebral arteriovenous malformations, benign and malignant intracranial tumors and functional diseases of the brain.

43. [Use of the radiosurgery knife in the treatment of hypophyseal adenomas]

Abstract: BACKGROUND. Surgery of pituitary adenomas did not produce quite satisfactory results. Therefore radiosurgery using Leksell's gamma knife has become the most widely used method which-with the contribution of MRI-meets the most important demands of aimed irradiation: a sufficiently high dose of radiation of the tumour and minimal radiation load of functionally important surrounding structures. The objective of the investigation was to assemble experience with this therapeutic method. METHODS AND RESULTS. During the period between October 1992 and September 1994 a total of 41 patients were treated: 16 men, 12-66 years old, mean age 40.8 years; 25 women age 16-76 years, mean age 50.2 years. Female:male ratio 1.5 : 1. In 30 patients (73.2%) a microsurgical operation had preceded, in 5 (12.2%) conventional fractionated radiotherapy and in 11 patients (26.9%) primary radiosurgery. As far as the type of pituitary adenoma is concerned, it conditioned acromegaly in 30, Cushing's syndrome in 3 or Nelson's syndrome in 1, or a prolactinoma was involved (in 2 patients). In five instances the adenoma was hormonally inactive. Its localization was most frequently intrasellar (36), less frequently parasellar (5). The range of administered doses varied as regards the maximum between 12.5 and 80 Gy, the average being 46.8 Gy, to the periphery of the adenoma a dose of 10-49 Gy was administered, on average 24.7 Gy using a 50-80% isodose. The time interval after treatment is relatively short for detailed analysis or evaluation. During current evaluation the authors did not observe in any of the patients progression of the disease, and in several patients diminution of the tumour was found. Karnofski's score seemed to improve. CONCLUSIONS. Radiosurgery, using Leksell's gamma knife, is after failure of conservative and microsurgical therapeutic possibilities suitable further treatment of pituitary adenoma. In indicated cases it may be the first choice. Postirradiation follow up indicates promising effects, for more detailed evaluation a several years' interval is necessary.
