Vertical plasmonic coupling in double-layer graphene leads to two hybridized plasmonic modes: optical and acoustic plasmons with symmetric and anti-symmetric charge distributions across the interlayer gap, respectively. However, in most experiments based on far-field excitation, only the optical plasmons are dominantly excited in the double-layer graphene systems. Here, we propose strategies to selectively and efficiently excite acoustic plasmons with a single or multiple nano-emitters. The analytical model developed here elucidates the role of the position and arrangement of the emitters on the symmetry of the resulting graphene plasmons. We present an optimal device structure to enable experimental observation of acoustic plasmons in double-layer graphene toward the ultimate level of plasmonic confinement defined by a monoatomic spacer, which is inaccesible with a graphene-on-a-mirror architecture.

Properties of graphene plasmons are greatly affected by their coupling to phonons. While such coupling has been routinely observed in both near-field and far-field graphene spectroscopy, the interplay between coupling strength and mode losses, and its exceptional point physics has not been discussed. By applying a non-Hermitian framework, we identify the transition point between strong and weak coupling as the exceptional point. Enhanced sensitivity to perturbations near the exceptional point is observed by varying the coupling strength and through gate modulation of the graphene Fermi level. Finally, we also show that the transition from strong to weak coupling is observable by changing the incident angle of radiation., 7 pages, 4 figures

An acoustic plasmonic mode in a graphene-dielectric-metal heterostructure has recently been spotlighted as a superior platform for strong light-matter interaction. It originates from the coupling of graphene plasmon with its mirror image and exhibits the largest field confinement in the limit of a nm-thick dielectric. Although recently detected in the far-field regime, optical near-fields of this mode are yet to be observed and characterized. Direct optical probing of the plasmonic fields reflected by the edges of graphene via near-field scattering microscope reveals a relatively small damping rate of the mid-IR acoustic plasmons in our devices, which allows for their real-space mapping even with unprotected, chemically grown, large-area graphene at ambient conditions. We show an acoustic mode that is twice as confined - yet 1.4 times less damped - compared to the graphene surface plasmon under similar conditions. We also image the resonant acoustic Bloch state in a 1D array of gold nanoribbons responsible for the high efficiency of the far-field coupling. Our results highlight the importance of acoustic plasmons as an exceptionally promising platform for large-area graphene-based optoelectronic devices operating in mid-IR.

Although van der Waals layered transition metal dichalcogenides from transient absorption spectroscopy have successfully demonstrated an ideal carrier multiplication (CM) performance with an onset of nearly 2Eg,interpretation of the CM effect from the optical approach remains unresolved owing to the complexity of many-body electron-hole pairs. We demonstrate the CM effect through simple photocurrent measurements by fabricating the dual-gate P-N junction of a MoTe2 film on a transparent substrate. Electrons and holes were efficiently extracted by eliminating the Schottky barriers in the metal contact and minimizing multiple reflections. The photocurrent was elevated proportionately to the excitation energy. The boosted quantum efficiency confirms the multiple electron-hole pair generation of >2Eg, consistent with CM results from an optical approach, pushing the solar cell efficiency beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit.

Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear optical processes confront severe limitations arising from the strong dispersion of metal susceptibilities and small interaction volumes that hamper desirable phase-matching-like conditions. Maximizing nonlinear interactions in nanoscale systems require simultaneous excitation of resonant modes that spatially and constructively overlap at all wavelengths involved in the process. Here, we present a hybrid rectangular patch antenna design for optimal second harmonic generation (SHG) that is characterized by a non-centrosymmetric dielectric/ferroelectric material at the plasmonic hot spot. The optimization of the rectangular patch allows for the independent tuning of various modes of resonances that can be used to enhance the SHG process. We explore the angular dependence of SHG in these hybrid structures and highlight conditions necessary for maximal SHG efficiency. Furthermore, we propose a novel configuration with a periodically-poled ferroelectric layer for orders-of-magnitude enhanced SHG at normal incidence. Such a platform may enable the development of integrated nanoscale light sources and on-chip frequency converters.

The main challenge to exploiting plasmons for gas vibrational mode sensing is the extremely weak infrared absorption of gas species. In this work, we explore the possibility of trapping free gas molecules via surface adsorption, optical, or electrostatic fields to enhance gas-plasmon interactions and to increase plasmon sensing ability. We discuss the relative strengths of these trapping forces and found gas adsorption in a typical nanoribbon array plasmonic setup produces measurable dips in optical extinction of magnitude 0.1 % for gas concentration of about parts per thousand level.

We present a novel plasmonic antenna structure, a split-wedge antenna, created by splitting an ultrasharp metallic wedge with a nanogap perpendicular to its apex. The nanogap can tightly confine gap plasmons and boost the local optical field intensity in and around these opposing metallic wedge tips. This three-dimensional split-wedge antenna integrates the key features of nanogaps and sharp tips, i.e., tight field confinement and three-dimensional nanofocusing, respectively, into a single platform. We fabricate split-wedge antennas with gaps that are as small as 1 nm in width at the wafer scale by combining silicon V-grooves with template stripping and atomic layer lithography. Computer simulations show that the field enhancement and confinement are stronger at the tip–gap interface compared to what standalone tips or nanogaps produce, with electric field amplitude enhancement factors exceeding 50 when near-infrared light is focused on the tip–gap geometry. The resulting nanometric hotspot volume is on the order of λ3/106. Experimentally, Raman enhancement factors exceeding 107 are observed from a 2 nm gap split-wedge antenna, demonstrating its potential for sensing and spectroscopy applications., Nano Letters, 16 (12), ISSN:1530-6984, ISSN:1530-6992

Solid-state quantum emitters, such as artificially engineered quantum dots or naturally occurring defects in solids, are being investigated for applications ranging from quantum information science and optoelectronics to biomedical imaging. Recently, these same systems have also been studied from the perspective of nanoscale metrology. In this letter we study the near-field optical properties of a diamond nanocrystal hosting a single nitrogen vacancy center. We find that the nitrogen vacancy center is a sensitive probe of the surrounding electromagnetic mode structure. We demonstrate an affordable low-noise surface plasmon resonance (SPR) instrument based on extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) in metallic nanohole arrays and quantify a broad range of antibody-ligand binding kinetics with equilibrium dissociation constants ranging from 200 pM to 40 nM. This nanohole-based SPR instrument is straightforward to construct, align, and operate, since it is built around a standard microscope and a portable fiber-optic spectrometer. The measured refractive index resolution of this platform is 3.1 × 10(-6) without on-chip cooling, which is among the lowest reported for SPR sensors based on EOT. This is accomplished via rapid full-spectrum acquisition in 10 ms followed by frame averaging of the EOT spectra, which is made possible by the production of template-stripped gold nanohole arrays with homogeneous optical properties over centimeter-sized areas. Sequential SPR measurements are performed using a 12-channel microfluidic flow cell after optimizing surface modification protocols and antibody injection conditions to minimize mass-transport artifacts. The immobilization of a model ligand, the protective antigen of anthrax on the gold surface, is monitored in real-time with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~860. Subsequently, real-time binding kinetic curves were measured quantitatively between the antigen and a panel of small, 25 kDa single-chain antibodies at concentrations down to 1 nM. These results indicate that nanohole-based SPR instruments have potential for quantitative antibody screening and as a general-purpose platform for integrating SPR sensors with other bioanalytical tools.

Infrared spectroscopy provides unique information on the composition and dynamics of biochemical systems by resolving the characteristic absorption fingerprints of their constituent molecules. Based on this inherent chemical specificity and the capability for label-free, noninvasive, and real-time detection, infrared spectroscopy approaches have unlocked a plethora of breakthrough applications for fields ranging from environmental monitoring and defense to chemical analysis and medical diagnostics. Nanophotonics has played a crucial role for pushing the sensitivity limits of traditional far-field spectroscopy by using resonant nanostructures to focus the incident light into nanoscale hot-spots of the electromagnetic field, greatly enhancing light-matter interaction. Metasurfaces composed of regular arrangements of such resonators further increase the design space for tailoring this nanoscale light control both spectrally and spatially, which has established them as an invaluable toolkit for surface-enhanced spectroscopy. Starting from the fundamental concepts of metasurface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy, a broad palette of resonator geometries, materials, and arrangements for realizing highly sensitive metadevices is showcased, with a special focus on emerging systems such as phononic and 2D van der Waals materials, and integration with waveguides for lab-on-a-chip devices. Furthermore, advanced sensor functionalities of metasurface-based infrared spectroscopy, including multiresonance, tunability, dielectrophoresis, live cell sensing, and machine-learning-aided analysis are highlighted.
