Compared to trees, little is known about the respiratory characteristics of bamboo, especially culm respiration. In this study, we measured the respiration rates of current year, 2, 3, and above 4-year-old Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) culms and examined its relation to culm morphology and anatomical structure. Current year culms had substantially higher respiration rates (1.9 ± 0.46 μmol m–2 s–1) compared to older culms (2, 3, and above 4-year-old average: 0.17 ± 0.09 μmol m–2 s–1). Culm wood density increased with age, with the concurrent thickening of parenchyma cell walls in the culm tissue. Nitrogen content in the culm tissue decreased with culm age. Both culm wood density and nitrogen content had significant relationships with culm respiration rate. On the other hand, culm height, wall thickness, and circumference did not affect culm respiration rate. Although bamboo culms did not change in size through the year, anatomical changes in the culm tissue that accompanied the aging of a culm affected the respiration. The culm age would have a significant effect on the evaluation of the respiratory characteristics of the bamboo forest. Our results suggested that young culms required a large amount of respiration to grow “inward” as cell wall thickening and also to maintain the relatively large amount of active tissue.

Forest thinning can significantly affect hydrological processes. However, these effects largely vary with forest types, climate, thinning intensity, and hydrological variables of interest. Understanding these effects and their variations can significantly support thinning treatments’ design and selection to ensure desired hydrological benefits. In this global-level review paper, we report the first comprehensive meta-analysis on the effects of thinning on major hydrological processes with an emphasis on rainfall partitioning, soil moisture and evapotranspiration processes. The synthesized and reviewed studies encompass different biophysical conditions (climate and forest ecosystems), silvicultural systems, and time scales (from weeks to decades) across continents. The results showed a significant increase in net precipitation, soil moisture and tree-level water use after thinning (the effect sizes are 1.19, 1.14 and 1.56 relative to the value of the control, respectively), while decreases in stemflow and transpiration (the effect sizes of 0.42 and 0.6 relative to the value of the control, respectively). Thinning intensity of about 50% of the stand density is determined as the threshold at or over which hydrological processes are significantly affected. The duration of thinning effect can be set between 2.6 and 4.3 (throughfall) and 3.1–8.6 years (soil moisture and transpiration), asking for repeated thinning in order to effectively sustain these effects. These global averages can serve as benchmarks for assessment and comparisons, but the effects of thinning depend on local biophysical conditions and thinning treatments. The literature review on the rest of the studied hydrological variables suggests that thinning generally enhance runoff to increase water yield and groundwater recharge. Thinning can also have a positive or limited role in water use efficiency (WUE), but it mitigates the effects of drought through increasing WUE. Moderate adverse effects on water quality can be prevented by adequate forest managements to prevent soil degradation. Nevertheless, more researches at relatively less studied regions are needed to support a more robust analysis of these reviewed hydrological variables. The management implications of the synthesized and reviewed results are suggested and discussed within the context of climate change. Although the sap-flux method has been widely used to estimate tree transpiration, the accuracy of the estimates has not been sufficiently examined, especially for ring-porous species. Quercus serrata is a ring-porous species that is widely distributed in warm-temperate forests in East Asia, including Japan. We compared the tree transpiration estimated by the sap-flux method using Granier sensors and by a cutting-tree experiment to evaluate the applicability of the sap-flux method to this species. The transpiration estimated by the sap-flux method correlated well (r = 0.985, p < 0.05) with that measured in the cutting-tree experiment, indicating that the sap-flux method succeeded in detecting diurnal changes in transpiration. However, the slope of the regression line was 1.84, indicating that transpiration was underestimated by the sap-flux method. Flow duration curves (FDCs) using inflow (Qin) and outflow (Qout) data does not accurately determine the flow contribution of reservoir dams. Analysis based on FDCs could lead to an incorrect conclusion that a reduction in flow occurred due to misinterpretation of zero Qout data. Zero Qout was often recorded when high precipitation occurred because the dam gate was operating to prevent flood flow. To avoid this problem (i.e., misinterpretation of zero Qout data), we proposed an alternate method that evaluates the increase in water flow induced by reservoir dams (Qout - Qin) in relation to Qin which indicates natural water flow without modification by reservoir dams. Based on this method, we evaluated 7 reservoir dams that were located upstream of the Tokyo metropolitan area. For 6 of the 7 reservoir dams, Qout - Qin was > 0 when Qin was at its lowest. These results showed clear contribution of the 6 reservoir dams to increasing flow which contrasts to the results when FDC analysis is applied. As Qin and Qout data for the main reservoir dams in Japan are readily available, our method can be easily applied to evaluate the contribution of reservoir dams to increasing low flow., ダム貯水池への流入量（Qin）と流出量（Qout）をもとにした流況曲線による解析は, ダム貯水池の渇水時流量の調節への貢献を正確に表現しないことがある. 流況曲線を用いた解析において, Qout = 0のデータはダム貯水池による渇水時流量の低下と解釈されるが, 現実にはQout = 0のデータはしばしば降水量の大きいときに記録されており, このことはQout = 0のデータが洪水緩和のためのダム制御によるものであることを意味している. このように, 流況曲線による解析はQout = 0のデータを誤って解釈するという問題があるため, 本論は, この問題を避けるための代替的な方法を考案した. この方法は, ダム貯水池による流量増加（Qout - Qin）を, ダム貯水池がなかった場合の流量に相当するQinとの関係から評価するものである. この方法を, 首都圏上流域にある7つのダム貯水池に適用したところ, 6つのダムにおいて, Qinの値が解析期間中でもっとも小さいときに, Qout - Qinがゼロより大きかった. この結果は, この6つのダムが渇水時流量の増加に貢献していたことを意味している. この結果は, 流況曲線による解析結果とは異なるものであった. 日本の主要なダム貯水池におけるQinとQoutのデータは公表されているため, 本論で提案した方法は, 日本のダム貯水池が渇水時流量の増加に貢献しているか否かを評価するのに役立つものである.

森林生態系からのリン（P）の流出は一般的に少なく，わが国の森林流域におけるP収支は多くの場合，支出が収入を下回るとされている．しかし，これまでのPの支出の算出方法は出水時の河川水中Pの濃度変化を考慮しない方法（区間代表法）が主流であったため，P収支を適切に評価しているとはいい難い．本研究では，支出の算出に出水時の濃度変化を考慮することがP収支の評価にどのような影響を及ぼすのかを明らかにするため，4年間にわたって，ヒノキ人工林に覆われた山地小流域の河川において週1回の定期採水と，18回の出水イベントにおいて1時間おきの連続採水を行なった．その結果，出水時の濃度変化を考慮した方法（分離型∑L－∑Q法）による支出は4年間の平均で，区間代表法のそれよりも3倍大きかった．このため，少雨年の区間代表法による支出は収入を下回る一方，分離型∑L－∑Q法による支出は収入を上回った．出水時，Pは主に懸濁態として多量に流出するため，河川水のP濃度は急激に上昇する．本研究では，分離型∑L－∑Q法を用いることによって出水時のP濃度上昇を考慮して正確にPの支出を推定することができた．

This paper examines transpiration reduction due to soil water deficits observed in a Lithocarpus edulis forest on Kyushu Island, south-western Japan. Continuous sap flow measurements were performed on six trees to monitor changes in tree transpiration rates. A reduction in sap flow velocity was observed in the period between late-September and late-October 2003. Precipitation amounts for this period were limited resulting in a corresponding low soil matric potential. A clear reduction in sap flow velocity occurred when soil matric potential at a 10 cm depth was ＜ － 70 ( kPa) . Sap flow velocity scaled for 1. 0 kPa vapor pressure deficit declined by 42 ％ when soil matric potential at a 10 cm depth was ＜ － 70 (kPa) compared to ≥ － 70 ( kPa) . In addition, intensive leaf-scale physiological measurements were performed on two days that had contrasting soil matric potentials. The intensive measurements showed lower leaf transpiration rates and stomatal conductance on the day with the lower soil matric potential. This finding suggests soil water deficits caused stomatal closure and therefore reduction in tree transpiration. Sap flow velocity and leaf water potential data showed that stem hydraulic conductance did not decline with low soil matric potential when compared to the day with higher soil matric potential., 本論は，九州のマテバシイ林で計測された土壌水分減少による蒸散低下を調べたものである。蒸散の変化を観測するために森林内の6本の樹木において樹液流計測を行ったところ，2003年9月下旬から10月下旬にかけて樹液流速の低下が認められた。この期間は降水量が少なかったために，土壌マトリックポテンシャルが低下していた。樹液流速の低下は，深度10 cmの土壌マトリックポテンシャルが－70 kPa以下のときに顕著であった。大気飽差が1.0 kPaのときの樹液流速は，土壌マトリックポテンシャルが－70 kPa以下のとき，土壌マトリックポテンシャルが－70 kPa以上のときに比べて42%低下していた。樹液流計測に加えて単葉スケールでの樹木生理計測を，土壌マトリックポテンシャルの異なる2日を選んで行った。その結果，単葉の蒸散量と気孔コンダクタンスは，土壌マトリックポテンシャルが低い日において小さかった。このことは，土壌水分減少が気孔の閉鎖を引き起こし，その結果，樹木の蒸散が低下したことを示唆している。樹液流速と水ポテンシャルの関係から，土壌マトリックポテンシャルの低下による幹の通水コンダクタンスの低下は認められなかった。

砂漠化が進行する中国黄土高原の中心部に位置する延安市郊外の公路山(N36°25'40"，E109°31'53"，alt.1353 m)において，北アメリカ原産の外来種であるニセアカシアとリョウトウナラを含む13種の郷土樹種について葉の水ポテンシャルを比較した。2002年8月における夜明け前と日中の葉の水ポテンシャルは郷土樹種のリョウトウナラよりもニセアカシアで低い値を示し,ニセアカシアはリョウトウナラよりも強い乾燥ストレス下で生育していた。また，郷土樹種では日中の葉の水ポテンシャルが -3.5 MPaより低下する種が5種認められ，特に灌木や小高木を中心として強い乾燥ストレス下で樹木が生育している実体が明らかになった。

森林地における樹冠遮断量を定量的に評価するための第一段階として, 樹冠構造が異なるスギ林およびマテバシイ林を対象として樹冠通過雨量の解析を行った. 樹冠通過雨量の観測は, 各林内の固定点に設置した貯留式雨量計と転倒マス雨量計を用いて行った. 樹冠通過雨量の空間的な分布特性は, 貯留式雨量計の観測値を用いて把握し, 林分平均樹冠通過雨量は, 転倒マス雨量計の観測値を貯留式雨量計の観測値によって補正することにより算出した. 樹冠通過雨量の空間分布はスギ林の方がマテバシイ林よりも不均一であり, また, スギ林の樹冠通過率 (0.64) は, マテバシイ林 (0.37) の約2倍の値を示した. 直達雨率はスギ林よりもマテバシイ林の方が高い値を示し, 樹冠通過雨の発生開始雨量については, スギ林 (1.9∼4.0mm) の方がマテバシイ林 (0.9∼1.6mm) よりも高い値を示した. 林外雨量に対する樹冠通過雨量の比率は, 小降雨時に値のばらつきが大きかったが, 雨量が多くなるにつれて一定の値に近づく傾向がみられた. 樹冠構造の異なる林分における樹冠通過雨の特性を明らかにするためには, LAIや樹冠開空率などの被覆特性だけでなく, 樹冠の形態的な特性についても考慮に入れる必要があることが示唆された.

森林地における林床水分動態を明らかにするため, 常緑針葉樹 (スギ) および常緑広葉樹 (マテバシイ) の人工林分を対象として, 林床に堆積するリター層による雨水遮断特性のモデル化を試みた. このモデルは, 各降雨日におけるリター遮断量と降雨後のリター層からの蒸発速度を再現するもので, モデルに使用するパラメータは小型ライシメータを用いた現地観測の結果から同定した. 各降雨日におけるリター遮断量は樹冠通過雨量から推定し, 降雨後のリター層からの蒸発速度は, リター層内含水率から推定した. 本研究で構築したモデルによるリター層内含水量の推定値は, 実測値の変化パターンを良好に再現し, 実測値の変動を85％以上説明した. 年間のリター層による雨水遮断損失量は, スギ林では樹冠通過雨量の5.1∼11.5％であり, マテバシイ林では樹冠通過雨量の9.5∼18.0％にも達し, リター層による遮断損失量が森林地における重要な水収支項となることが示唆された.
