1. Follow-up timing of 24 pulsars discovered in commensal radio astronomy FAST survey

Abstract

The follow-up timing observations were carried out for 24 pulsars discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey. We report their phase-connected timing ephemeris, polarization pulse profiles, and Faraday rotation measurements. With their spin periods spanning from 2.995 ms to 4.34 s, their period derivatives were determined to spread between 7.996(8) × 10−21 and 9.83(3) × 10−15 s s−1, which imply that they have characteristic ages from 1.97 × 106 to 5.93 × 109 yr. It is inferred that PSRs J0211+4235 and J0518+2431 are beyond the ‘traditional death line’. PSR J0211+4235 is beyond the ‘death valley’. The death line model of Zhang et al. also cannot explain the radio presence of PSR J0211+4235. This suggests that radiation theory needs to be improved. Besides, ten of the 22 canonical pulsars show nulling phenomena. Moreover, PSR J1617+1123 exhibits variation of emission and J0540+4542 shows subpulse drifting. The DM of five pulsars is larger than the estimated by the YMW16 electron density model, which could suggest that electron density models need updates for higher Galactic latitude regions. PSRs J0447+2447 and J1928−0548 are isolated millisecond pulsars. With their flux densities spanning from 5(1)–553(106) μJy, some of these new pulsars found by FAST are distant, dim, and low-$\dot{E}$ ones and are suitable for testing pulsar emission theories.

Abstract

1. The H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus can infect both chickens and humans. Previous studies have reported a role for erythrocytes in immunity. However, the role of H9N2 against chicken erythrocytes and the presence of complement-related genes in erythrocytes has not been studied. This research investigated the effect of H9N2 on complement-associated gene expression in chicken erythrocytes. 2. The expression of complement-associated genes (C1s, C1q, C2, C3, C3ar1, C4, C4a, C5, C5ar1, C7, CD93 and CFD) was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to analyse the differential expression of complement-associated genes in chicken erythrocytes at 0 h, 2 h, 6 h and 10 h after the interaction between H9N2 virus and chicken erythrocytes in vitro and 3, 7 and 14 d after H9N2 virus nasal infection of chicks. 3. Expression levels of C1q, C4, C1s, C2, C3, C5, C7 and CD93 were significantly up-regulated at 2 h and significantly down-regulated at 10 h. Gene expression levels of C1q, C3ar1, C4a, CFD and C5ar1 were seen to be different at each time point. The expression levels of C1q, C4, C1s, C2, C3, C5, C7, CFD, C3ar1, C4a and C5ar1 were significantly up-regulated at 7 d and the gene expression of levels of C3, CD93 and C5ar1 were seen to be different at each time point. 4. The results confirmed that all the complement-associated genes were expressed in chicken erythrocytes and showed the H9N2 virus interaction with chicken erythrocytes and subsequent regulation of chicken erythrocyte complement-associated genes expression. This study reported, for the first time, the relationship between H9N2 and complement system of chicken erythrocytes, which will provide a foundation for further research into the prevention and control of H9N2 infection.

4. Axatilimab for Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease After Failure of at Least Two Prior Systemic Therapies: Results of a Phase I/II Study

Abstract

PURPOSE Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) remains the major cause of late morbidity after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF-1R)–dependent macrophages promote cGVHD fibrosis, and their elimination in preclinical studies ameliorated cGVHD. Axatilimab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that inhibits CSF-1R signaling and restrains macrophage development. PATIENTS AND METHODS This phase I (phI)/phase II (phII) open-label study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03604692 ) evaluated safety, tolerability, and efficacy of axatilimab in patients age ≥ 6 years with active cGVHD after ≥ 2 prior systemic therapy lines. Primary objectives in phI were to identify the optimal biologic and recommended phII dose and in phII to evaluate the overall (complete and partial) response rate (ORR) at the start of treatment cycle 7. RESULTS Forty enrolled patients (17 phI; 23 phII) received at least one axatilimab dose. In phI, a dose of 3 mg/kg given once every 4 weeks met the optimal biologic dose definition. Two dose-limiting toxicities occurred at the 3 mg/kg dose given once every 2 weeks. At least one treatment-related adverse event (TRAE) was observed in 30 patients with grade ≥ 3 TRAEs in eight patients, the majority known on-target effects of CSF-1R inhibition. No cytomegalovirus reactivations occurred. With the 50% ORR at cycle 7 day 1, the phII cohort met the primary efficacy end point. Furthermore, the ORR in the first six cycles, an end point supporting regulatory approvals, was 82%. Responses were seen in all affected organs regardless of prior therapy. Fifty-eight percent of patients reported significant improvement in cGVHD-related symptoms using the Lee Symptom Scale. On-target activity of axatilimab was suggested by the decrease in skin CSF-1R–expressing macrophages. CONCLUSION Targeting profibrotic macrophages with axatilimab is a therapeutically promising novel strategy with a favorable safety profile for refractory cGVHD.

Abstract

We describe a minimally invasive endovascular approach to treat an arteriovenous fistula of the scalp. We performed a direct puncture of the lesion through the patient’s scalp for liquid embolic agent injection along with external compression of the superficial temporal artery to perform a “manual pressure-cooker technique.” The combination of these minimally invasive techniques resulted in an excellent clinical and radiographic outcome.

7. A deep reinforcement learning-based approach to onboard trajectory generation for hypersonic vehicles

Abstract

An onboard three-dimensional (3D) trajectory generation approach based on the reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm and deep neural network (DNN) is proposed for hypersonic vehicles in glide phase. Multiple trajectory samples are generated offline through the convex optimisation method. The deep learning (DL) is employed to pre-train the DNN for initialising the actor network and accelerating the RL process. Based on the offline deep policy deterministic actor-critic algorithm, a flight target-oriented reward function with path constraints is designed. The actor network is optimised by the end-to-end RL and policy gradients of the critic network until the reward function converges to the maximum. The actor network is considered as the onboard trajectory generator to compute optimal control values online based on the real-time motion states. The simulation results show that the single-step online planning time meets the real-time requirements of onboard trajectory generation. The significant improvement in terminal accuracy of the online trajectory and the better generalisation under biased initial states for hypersonic vehicles in glide phase is observed.

Abstract

Stem vascular cambium cells in forest trees produce wood for materials and energy. WOX4 affects the proliferation of such cells in Populus. Here we show that PtrWOX4a is the most highly expressed stem vascular-cambium-specific (VCS) gene in P. trichocarpa, and its expression is controlled by the product of the second most highly expressed VCS gene, PtrVCS2, encoding a zinc finger protein. PtrVCS2 binds to the PtrWOX4a promoter as part of a PtrWOX13a–PtrVCS2–PtrGCN5-1–PtrADA2b-3 protein tetramer. PtrVCS2 prevented the interaction between PtrGCN5-1 and PtrADA2b-3, resulting in H3K9, H3K14 and H3K27 hypoacetylation at the PtrWOX4a promoter, which led to fewer cambium cell layers. These effects on cambium cell proliferation were consistent across more than 20 sets of transgenic lines overexpressing individual genes, gene-edited mutants and RNA interference lines in P. trichocarpa. We propose that the tetramer–PtrWOX4a system may coordinate genetic and epigenetic regulation to maintain normal vascular cambium development for wood formation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical application of cinematically rendered reconstructions of maxillofacial fractures. Ten surgeons and eight radiologists were shown three-dimensional images of 25 different patient cases, generated using both the volume rendering (VR) technique and the cinematic rendering (CR) technique. They were asked to mark the site of the fracture on the three-dimensional images and record the time this activity took. The effectiveness of the reconstructions to communicate with patients was assessed through the opinions of the surgeons and radiologists, as well as 25 patients. Subjective evaluations of the clinical value of the images were performed by the 18 surgeons and radiologists using a 10-item questionnaire. The percentages of correctly identified fractures of the nasal bone (P = 0.034), fracture dislocation (P 0.001), and free bone fragments (P 0.001) were significantly higher for CR images when compared to VR images, and identification took an average of 20.81 seconds for CR and 27.48 seconds for VR (P 0.001). CR images were found to be more beneficial for communication with patients and scored higher for the display of fracture dislocation and free bone fragments than VR images (P 0.05). CR images were found to have high clinical value in the visualization of maxillofacial fractures.

Abstract

Identifying the early islet cellular processes of autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) in humans is challenging given the absence of symptoms during this period and the inaccessibility of the pancreas for sampling. In this article, we study temporal events in pancreatic islets in LEW.1WR1 rats, in which autoimmune diabetes can be induced with virus infection, by performing transcriptional analysis of islets harvested during the prediabetic period. Single-cell RNA-sequencing and differential expression analyses of islets from prediabetic rats reveal subsets of β- and α-cells under stress as evidenced by heightened expression, over time, of a transcriptional signature characterized by interferon-stimulated genes, chemokines including Cxcl10, major histocompatibility class I, and genes for the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Mononuclear phagocytes show increased expression of inflammatory markers. RNA-in situ hybridization of rat pancreatic tissue defines the spatial distribution of Cxcl10+ β- and α-cells and their association with CD8+ T cell infiltration, a hallmark of insulitis and islet destruction. Our studies define early islet transcriptional events during immune cell recruitment to islets and reveal spatial associations between stressed β- and α-cells and immune cells. Insights into such early processes can assist in the development of therapeutic and prevention strategies for T1D.

Abstract

The role of periosteum rich in a variety of bone cells and growth factors in the treatment of bone defects has gradually been discovered. However, due to the limited number of healthy transplantable periosteum, there are still major challenges in the clinical treatment of critical-size bone defects. Various techniques for preparing biomimetic periosteal scaffolds that are similar in composition and structure to natural periosteal scaffold have gradually emerged. This article reviews the current preparation methods of biomimetic periosteal scaffolds based on various biomaterials, which are mainly divided into natural periosteal materials and various polymer biomaterials. Several preparation methods of biomimetic periosteal scaffolds with different principles are listed, their strengths and weaknesses are also discussed. It aims to provide a more systematic perspective for the preparation of biomimetic periosteal scaffolds in the future.

Abstract

To investigate the optimal amide proton transfer (APT) imaging parameters for bladder cancer (BCa), the influence of different protein concentrations and pH values on APT imaging, and to establish the reliability of APT imaging in healthy volunteers and patients with BCa.The optimal APT imaging parameters for BCa were experimentally optimised using cross-linked bovine serum albumin (BSA) phantoms. BSA phantoms were scanned with different values for the saturation power, saturation duration and number of excitations. Meanwhile, BSA phantoms containing different protein concentrations and solutions of different pH levels were scanned. The interobserver agreement of the asymmetric magnetisation transfer ratio (MTRThe optimal scanning scheme consisted of 1 excitation, a saturation power of 2 μT, and a saturation time of 2 s. The APT signal intensity increased as the protein concentration increased and as the pH decreased. The MTRAPT imaging showed potential value for application in BCa.

We assessed the combination of baricitinib plus remdesivir versus dexamethasone plus remdesivir in preventing progression to mechanical ventilation or death in hospitalised patients with COVID-19.MethodsIn this randomised, double-blind, double placebo-controlled trial, patients were enrolled at 67 trial sites in the USA (60 sites), South Korea (two sites), Mexico (two sites), Singapore (two sites), and Japan (one site). Hospitalised adults (≥18 years) with COVID-19 who required supplemental oxygen administered by low-flow (≤15 L/min), high-flow (>15 L/min), or non-invasive mechanical ventilation modalities who met the study eligibility criteria (male or non-pregnant female adults ≥18 years old with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection) were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either baricitinib, remdesivir, and placebo, or dexamethasone, remdesivir, and placebo using a permuted block design. Randomisation was stratified by study site and baseline ordinal score at enrolment. All patients received remdesivir (≤10 days) and either baricitinib (or matching oral placebo) for a maximum of 14 days or dexamethasone (or matching intravenous placebo) for a maximum of 10 days. The primary outcome was the difference in mechanical ventilation-free survival by day 29 between the two treatment groups in the modified intention-to-treat population. Safety analyses were done in the as-treated population, comprising all participants who received one dose of the study drug. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04640168.FindingsBetween Dec 1, 2020, and April 13, 2021, 1047 patients were assessed for eligibility. 1010 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned, 516 (51%) to baricitinib plus remdesivir plus placebo and 494 (49%) to dexamethasone plus remdesivir plus placebo. The mean age of the patients was 58·3 years (SD 14·0) and 590 (58%) of 1010 patients were male. 588 (58%) of 1010 patients were White, 188 (19%) were Black, 70 (7%) were Asian, and 18 (2%) were American Indian or Alaska Native. 347 (34%) of 1010 patients were Hispanic or Latino. Mechanical ventilation-free survival by day 29 was similar between the study groups (Kaplan-Meier estimates of 87·0% [95% CI 83·7 to 89·6] in the baricitinib plus remdesivir plus placebo group and 87·6% [84·2 to 90·3] in the dexamethasone plus remdesivir plus placebo group; risk difference 0·6 [95% CI -3·6 to 4·8]; p=0·91). The odds ratio for improved status in the dexamethasone plus remdesivir plus placebo group compared with the baricitinib plus remdesivir plus placebo group was 1·01 (95% CI 0·80 to 1·27). At least one adverse event occurred in 149 (30%) of 503 patients in the baricitinib plus remdesivir plus placebo group and 179 (37%) of 482 patients in the dexamethasone plus remdesivir plus placebo group (risk difference 7·5% [1·6 to 13·3]; p=0·014). 21 (4%) of 503 patients in the baricitinib plus remdesivir plus placebo group had at least one treatment-related adverse event versus 49 (10%) of 482 patients in the dexamethasone plus remdesivir plus placebo group (risk difference 6·0% [2·8 to 9·3]; p=0·00041). Severe or life-threatening grade 3 or 4 adverse events occurred in 143 (28%) of 503 patients in the baricitinib plus remdesivir plus placebo group and 174 (36%) of 482 patients in the dexamethasone plus remdesivir plus placebo group (risk difference 7·7% [1·8 to 13·4]; p=0·012).InterpretationIn hospitalised patients with COVID-19 requiring supplemental oxygen by low-flow, high-flow, or non-invasive ventilation, baricitinib plus remdesivir and dexamethasone plus remdesivir resulted in similar mechanical ventilation-free survival by day 29, but dexamethasone was associated with significantly more adverse events, treatment-related adverse events, and severe or life-threatening adverse events. A more individually tailored choice of immunomodulation now appears possible, where side-effect profile, ease of administration, cost, and patient comorbidities can all be considered.FundingNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Abstract

Previous studies have evaluated the effects of probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation on blood glucose profiles among diabetic patients. However, the results were inconsistent.Systematic review and meta-analysis.A systematic searching from PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Central was conducted to identify high-quality clinical trials investigating the effect of probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation on blood glucose profiles [including fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)] up to December 2020. Subgroup analyses by types or durations of probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation were conducted to investigate the different effects among different populations.A total of 39 trials with 3517 participants were included in the final analyses. Among patients with type II diabetes (T2DM), the summarized standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidential intervals (95% CIs) of FBG, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR were -0.30 (95% CI: -0.65 to 0.05), -0.59 (95% CI: -0.88 to -0.30), and -0.68 (95% CI: -1.13 to -0.23), respectively. Among patients with gestational diabetes (GDM), the summary SMDs of FBG, HbA1c and HOMA-IR were -0.67 (95% CI: -1.23 to -0.11), -0.24 (95% CI: -0.57 to 0.08), and -1.06 (95% CI: -1.72 to -0.40), respectively. Similar improvements in blood glucose profiles were also found among persons with prediabetes or gestational woman with normal glucose, but not among patients with type I diabetes. Subgroup analyses showed similar results of probiotic supplementation for patients with T2DM and probiotic/synbiotic supplementation for patients with GDM.Probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic supplementation might improve the blood glucose profiles among patients with T2DM/GDM, persons with prediabetes, or gestational woman with normal glucose. Abstract

This letter documents a search for flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), which are strongly suppressed in the Standard Model, in events with a photon and a top quark with the ATLAS detector. The analysis uses data collected in pp collisions at s=13 TeV during Run 2 of the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{−1}$. Both FCNC top-quark production and decay are considered. The final state consists of a charged lepton, missing transverse momentum, a b-tagged jet, one high-momentum photon and possibly additional jets. A multiclass deep neural network is used to classify events either as signal in one of the two categories, FCNC production or decay, or as background. No significant excess of events over the background prediction is observed and 95% CL upper limits are placed on the strength of left- and right-handed FCNC interactions. The 95% CL bounds on the branching fractions for the FCNC top-quark decays, estimated (expected) from both top-quark production and decay, are B(t→uγ)<0.85(0.88−0.25+0.37)×10−5 and B(t→cγ)<4.2(3.40−0.95+1.35)×10−5 for a left-handed tqγ coupling, and B(t→uγ)<1.2(1.20−0.33+0.50)×10−5 and B(t→cγ)<4.5(3.70−1.03+1.47)×10−5 for a right-handed coupling.

Abstract

The scanning fiber endoscope (SFE) is a novel medical imaging device that has been used in various vascular beds as a form of angioscopy, as well as in tracts and duct systems for endoluminal imaging. Owing to its miniaturized form, high resolution, and flexibility, it has demonstrated success in imaging across a wide range of diagnostic applications.To demonstrate, by performing a third ventriculostomy and visualizing the cranial nerves and brainstem anatomy, that, without modification, the SFE can be used through a transcranial approach in a therapeutic intraventricular neurosurgical application.A 3.7 French SFE system was used without modification on a live porcine model to perform a third ventriculostomy and acquire high-resolution images of the animal's ventricular system, cranial nerves, and brainstem. A side-by-side comparison was made with one of the current standard-of-care rigid endoscopes as a context for size and image quality.High-resolution video-rate imaging was used to assist the successful, uncomplicated performance of a third ventriculostomy. High-resolution endoscopic images of the brainstem and cranial nerves were acquired.Although the SFE has been shown to be a superior device for imaging, here we demonstrate its first use as a potential therapeutic device in intracranial neurosurgery.

32. Safety and tolerance of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei N1115 in caesarean-born young children: a randomised, placebo-controlled trial

Abstract

The administration of probiotics may help to improve dysbiosis and related health problems in children delivered by caesarean section. However, the effects are strain specific, and safety combined tolerance are considered a priority. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and tolerance of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei N1115 in caesarean-born children aged 6-24 months via a randomised, placebo-controlled intervention study. In total, 101 children were included and randomised to receive either a sachet of L. paracasei N1115 (2×1010 cfu/g, 2 g/day) or placebo (maltodextrin, 2 g/day) per day for 12 weeks. Anthropometric parameters were measured by trained nurses, and defecation characteristics, gastrointestinal symptoms, (serious) adverse events ((s)AEs), crying patterns and lifestyle behaviours were recorded by parents or guardians. Neurocognitive development was assessed by the Ages and Stages Questionnaires-3 (ASQ-3) before and after the intervention. The only difference between groups regarding defecation characteristics was a significant treatment × time effect on stool frequency (P=0.007), as the number of defecations was significantly higher in the probiotic group (around 1.2-1.3 times/day) than in the placebo group (around 1.0 times/day) in the later intervention period (P=0.035 at week 9; P=0.048 at week 10; P=0.026 at week 12). The use of L. paracasei N1115 also reduced the incidence rate of constipation (Incidence rate ratio (IRR): 0.120; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.015, 0.967; P=0.046) and abdominal pain (IRR: 0.562; 95% CI: 0.358, 0.882; P=0.012). Changes in anthropometric parameters, including weight, height and head circumference, did not differ significantly between groups, nor did measures of crying, sleep, outdoor activity, temper, appetite or the ASQ-3 scores. No adverse events associated with consumption of the probiotic were reported. Thus, the administration of L. paracasei N1115 is safe and well-tolerated in caesarean-born children aged 6-24 months. Furthermore, it may ameliorate gastrointestinal function to some extent.

Abstract

The Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS) has contributed to the World Climate Research Programme’s Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) using two fully coupled model versions (ACCESS-CM2 and ACCESS-ESM1.5) and two ocean–sea-ice model versions (1° and 0.25° resolution versions of ACCESS-OM2). The fully coupled models differ primarily in the configuration and version of their atmosphere components (including the aerosol scheme), with smaller differences in their sea-ice and land model versions. Additionally, ACCESS-ESM1.5 includes biogeochemistry in the land and ocean components and can be run with an interactive carbon cycle. CMIP6 comprises core experiments and associated thematic Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPs). This paper provides an overview of the CMIP6 submission, including the methods used for the preparation of input forcing datasets and the post-processing of model output, along with a comprehensive list of experiments performed, detailing their initialisation, duration, ensemble number and computational cost. A small selection of model output is presented, focusing on idealised experiments and their variants at global scale. Differences in the climate simulation of the two coupled models are highlighted. ACCESS-CM2 produces a larger equilibrium climate sensitivity (4.7°C) than ACCESS-ESM1.5 (3.9°C), likely a result of updated atmospheric parameterisation in recent versions of the atmospheric component of ACCESS-CM2. The idealised experiments run with ACCESS-ESM1.5 show that land and ocean carbon fluxes respond to both changing atmospheric CO2 and to changing temperature. ACCESS data submitted to CMIP6 are available from the Earth System Grid Federation (https://doi.org/10.22033/ESGF/CMIP6.2281 and https://doi.org/10.22033/ESGF/CMIP6.2288). The information provided in this paper should facilitate easier use of these significant datasets by the broader climate community.

Abstract

We report the phase-connected timing ephemeris, polarization pulse profiles, Faraday rotation measurements, and Rotating-Vector-Model (RVM) fitting results of 12 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST survey (CRAFTS). The timing campaigns were carried out with FAST and Arecibo over 3 yr. 11 of the 12 pulsars are in neutron star–white dwarf binary systems, with orbital periods between 2.4 and 100 d. 10 of them have spin periods, companion masses, and orbital eccentricities that are consistent with the theoretical expectations for MSP–Helium white dwarf (He WD) systems. The last binary pulsar (PSR J1912−0952) has a significantly smaller spin frequency and a smaller companion mass, the latter could be caused by a low orbital inclination for the system. Its orbital period of 29 d is well within the range of orbital periods where some MSP–He WD systems have shown anomalous eccentricities, however, the eccentricity of PSR J1912−0952 is typical of what one finds for the remaining MSP–He WD systems.

37. A simple four-pole solution with FEM/BEM validation to estimate the effectiveness of compact resonators in large silencers

Abstract

Large absorptive silencers are used in the power generation industry to abate intake or exhaust noise. They are very effective at mid to high frequencies; however, low-frequency performance is an area of concern for absorptive silencers. Hybrid baffles and bars with empty space reserved for a quarter wavelength duct design have been used to target low-frequency tonal noise with some success. Although, at times the hybrid baffles or bars themselves are not enough to reduce the low-frequency noise to an acceptable level. Synonymously, the overall high-frequency performance may suffer due to the loss of space that could be used for more dissipative elements such as absorptive baffles or bars. Compact resonators with a tapering neck may then be considered as an add-on to improve the low-frequency performance. In this paper, a simple four-pole solution is utilized to estimate the first natural frequency of a compact resonator. The end correction factor is then empirically correlated to the finite element method (FEM) or boundary element method (BEM) solution. The small compact devices have a potential application to provide engineers with a very flexible design add-on strategy without significantly altering the installed silencer design, and their target frequencies can also be adjusted depending on the situation.

Abstract

Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Abstract

By analyzing 4.48 × 108 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we observe the decays χ cJ → nK S 0 Λ ¯ $$ {nK}_S^0\overline{\Lambda} $$ + c.c. (J = 0, 1, 2) for the first time, via the radiative transition ψ(3686) → γχ cJ . The branching fractions are determined to be (6.65 ± 0.26stat ± 0.41syst) × 10 −4, (1.66 ± 0.12stat ± 0.12syst) × 10 −4, and (3.58 ± 0.16stat ± 0.23syst) × 10 −4 for J = 0, 1, and 2, respectively.

Abstract

The main scientific goal of LHAASO-WCDA is to survey gamma-ray sources with energy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. To observe high-energy shower events, especially to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 10 PeV, a dynamic range extension system (WCDA++) is designed to use a 1.5-inch PMT with a dynamic range of four orders of magnitude for each cell in WCDA-1. The dynamic range is extended by using these PMTs to measure the effective charge density in the core region of air shower events, which is an important parameter for identifying the composition of primary particles. The system has been running for more than one year. In this paper, the details of the design and performance of WCDA++ are presented.

Taiwan is located in subtropical monsoon area and Pacific Ring of Fire. Both the rate of crustal uplift and annual rainfall are among the highest in the world. Earthquakes and heavy rainfall have led to massive landslides and debris flow. Frequent disasters and the high rate of surface erosion have caused drastic changes in river topography and catchment areas, and, consequently, have impacted the safety of human lives. To mitigate the losses, better simulation and prediction of landslides are critical. Existing landslide prediction research works employed terrain, geology, rainfall, earthquakes and human activities as landslide triggering factors in the predicting model. In addition to aforementioned environmental conditions, this study would like to explore the use of SAR differential interferometry (InSAR) information to help observe characteristics of the slope movement behavior, which is also an important factor. Factors are analyzed and quantified on the basis of slope units. To confirm the applicability of selected factors to landslide, factors are firstly analyzed with Spearman correlation, and then those with higher correlations are incorporated into the prediction model. Machine learning based techniques are then employed to establish the prediction model. The experiment result demonstrates that InSAR information can improve the accuracy by more than 5% in landslide prediction.

44. EXPLORING LABEL INITIALIZATION FOR WEAKLY SUPERVISED ALS POINT CLOUD SEMANTIC SEGMENTATION

Abstract

Although a number of emerging point-cloud semantic segmentation methods achieve state-of-the-art results, acquiring fully interpreted training data is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. To reduce the burden of data annotation in training, semiand weakly supervised methods are proposed to address the situation of limited supervisory sources, achieving competitive results compared to full supervision schemes. However, given a fixed budget, the effective annotation of a few points is typically ignored, which is referred to as weak-label initialization in this study. In practice, random selection is typically adopted by default. Because weakly supervised methods largely rely on semantic information supplied by initial weak labels, this studies explores the influence of different weak-label initialization strategies. In addition to random initialization, we propose a feature-constrained framework to guide the selection of initial weak labels. A feature space of point clouds is first constructed by feature extraction and embedding. Then, we develop a density-biased strategy to annotate points by locating highly dense clustered regions, as significant information distinguishing semantic classes is often concentrated in such areas. Our method outperforms random initialization on ISPRS Vaihingen 3D data when only using sparse weak labels, achieving an overall accuracy of 78.06% using 1‰ of labels. However, only a minor increase is observed on the LASDU dataset. Additionally, the results show that initialization with category-wise uniformly distributed weak labels is more effective when incorporated using a weakly supervised method.

Abstract

Paraspinal lumbar schwannomas are primarily located outside of the spinal canal with minimal extension into the neural foramen. Approaching these tumors through a traditional posterior approach can be challenging given their lateral location to the spine and is likely to require extensive bony removal and potential destabilization of the spine. Alternatives approaches have been identified that may circumvent the need for extensive bony removal.To examine the use of the paramedian Wiltse approach for giant extraspinal tumors and compare the approach with other nonposterior approaches.We present 2 cases in which the paramedian Wiltse approach is used to effectively approach large paraspinal schwannomas and achieve complete tumor resection without destabilization of the spine.The paramedian Wiltse approach along with expandable retractors systems were able to achieve complete resection of the giant paraspinal schwannomas. Neural preservation was able to be achieved in one case which was facilitated by the exposure achieved through the posterior paramedian corridor that allowed for visualization of the proximal and distal ends of the tumor.The paramedian Wiltse approach is an ideal approach to target large extraspinal schwannomas for complete resection and potential neural preservation without the need for destabilization of the spine.

Abstract

Wood formation is controlled by transcriptional regulatory networks (TRNs) involving regulatory homeostasis determined by combinations of transcription factor (TF)-DNA and TF-TF interactions. Functions of TF-TF interactions in wood formation are still in the early stages of identification. PtrMYB074 is a woody dicot-specific TF in a TRN for wood formation in Populus trichocarpa. Here, using yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation, we conducted a genome-wide screening for PtrMYB074 interactors and identified 54 PtrMYB074-TF pairs. Of these pairs, 53 are novel. We focused on the PtrMYB074-PtrWRKY19 pair, the most highly expressed and xylem-specific interactor, and its direct transregulatory target, PtrbHLH186, the xylem-specific one of the pair's only two direct TF target genes. Using transient and CRISPR-mediated transgenesis in P. trichocarpa coupled with chromatin immunoprecipitation and electrophoretic mobility shift assays, we demonstrated that PtrMYB074 is recruited by PtrWRKY19 and that the PtrMYB074-PtrWRKY19 dimers are required to transactive PtrbHLH186. Overexpressing PtrbHLH186 in P. trichocarpa resulted in retarded plant growth, increased guaiacyl lignin, a higher proportion of smaller stem vessels and strong drought-tolerant phenotypes. Knowledge of the PtrMYB074-PtrWRKY19-PtrbHLH186 regulation may help design genetic controls of optimal growth and wood formation to maximize beneficial wood properties while minimizing negative effects on growth.

Abstract

To investigate the computed tomography (CT) and integrated positron-emission tomography (PET)/CT findings of primary pulmonary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (PLELC).The imaging and histopathological data of 215 patients with PLELC confirmed at histopathology were analysed retrospectively. All patients underwent CT, and 70 underwent PET/CT. None of the cohort had nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma.The PLELC was demonstrated as a solitary nodule/mass in 188 cases (188/215, 87%), multiple nodules/masses in 12 cases (12/215, 6%), lobar or segmental consolidation in 15 cases (15/215, 7%). The tumour showed a well-defined margin in 171 cases (171/215, 80%), lobular sign in 177 cases (177/215, 82%), and spicule sign in 91 cases (91/215, 42%). Most of the cases showed homogeneous density in unenhanced CT (128/215, 60%), and vascular shadows inside the tumour in the arterial stage were found in 105 cases (105/158, 66%). Involvement of the bronchus was found in 154 cases (154/215, 72%). Hilar or mediastinal lymph nodes were enlarged in 160 patients (160/215, 74%). Abstract

A new study of double beta decay processes in natural Zr isotopes using Zr metal samples and an ultra-low-background high-purity germanium detectors was performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN (Italy). Two data sets were collected with a 736.35 g and a 129.94 g Zr metal over 59.7 days and 37.3 days, respectively, and were used for a detailed analysis. A new limit on the double beta decay of $$^{94}$$ 94 Zr to the 1st excited level of $$^{94}$$ 94 Mo was set as $$T_{1/2}^{\beta \beta } > 2.1\times 10^{20}~\text {year}$$ T 1 / 2 β β > 2.1 × 10 20 year , which is a factor of three better than the previous result. It is shown that the current radiopurity of Zr metal (tens of Bq/kg), produced via two methods, do not comply with the radiopurity requirements for low-background experiments. Hence, we propose to use a purified ZrCl$$_{4}$$ 4 powder in an optimized geometry as a new approach for future experiments with extended sensitivity focused on studies of rare nuclear processes in Zr isotopes.

Abstract

In the light of SU(3) flavor symmetry, the effective interaction Hamiltonian in tensor form is obtained by virtue of group representation theory. The strong and electromagnetic breaking effects are treated as a spurion octet so that the flavor singlet principle can be utilized as the criterion to determine the form of effective Hamiltonian. Two body decays of both baryonic and mesonic final states are parameterized in the uniform scheme, based on which the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes is studied for various charmonium decay modes, including psi' and/or J/jpsi decay to octet baryon pair, decuplet baryon pair, decuplet-octet baryon final state, and pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar meson final state.
