Abstract: PANDA (anti-proton annihiliation at Darmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2 × 1032 cm−2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees sufficient safety margins.

Abstract: The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Lambda}\Lambda$ and $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Xi}^+\Xi^-$. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. 3. Proton-and Neutron-Induced Single-Event Upsets in FPGAs for the PANDA Experiment

Abstract: Single-event upsets (SEUs) affecting the configuration memory of a 28-nm field-programmable gate array (FPGA) have been studied through experiments and Monte Carlo modeling. This FPGA will be used in the front-end electronics of the electromagnetic calorimeter in PANDA (Antiproton Annihilation at Darmstadt), an upcoming hadron-physics experiment. Results from proton and neutron irradiations of the FPGA are presented and shown to be in agreement with previous experimental results. To estimate the mean time between SEUs during operation of PANDA, a Geant4-based Monte Carlo model of the phenomenon has been used. This model describes the energy deposition by particles in a silicon volume, the subsequent drift and diffusion of charges in the FPGA memory cell, and the eventual collection of charges in the sensitive regions of the cell. The values of the two free parameters of the model, the sensitive volume side $d = 87$ nm and the critical charge $Q_{\text {crit}} = 0.23$ fC, were determined by fitting the model to the experimental data. The results of the model agree well with both the proton and neutron data and are also shown to correctly predict the cross sections for upsets induced by other particles. The model-predicted energy dependence of the cross section for neutron-induced upsets has been used to estimate the rate of SEUs during initial operation of PANDA. At a luminosity of $1\cdot 10^{31}$ cm $^{-2}\,\,\text{s}^{-1}$ , the predicted mean time between upsets (MTBU) is between 120 and 170 h per FPGA, depending on the beam momentum.

Abstract: The $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one of the four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ will address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2 × 1032 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particle identification (PID) is crucial to the success of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ physics program. Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by a fast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/K separation up to 3.5 GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final state kaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes the technical design and the expected performance of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ Barrel DIRC detector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several key improvements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detailed detector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beams at GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/K separation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in the Barrel DIRC.

Abstract: Bound nuclear systems with two units of strangeness are still poorly known despite their importance for many strong interaction phenomena. Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent an unparalleled factory for various hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of systems which contain two or even more units of strangeness at the PANDA experiment at FAIR. For the first time, high resolution gamma-spectroscopy of doubly strange Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei will be performed, thus complementing measurements of ground state decays of Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei at J-PARC or possible decays of particle unstable hypernuclei in heavy ion reactions. High resolution spectroscopy of multistrange Xi(-) -atoms will be feasible and even the production of Omega(-) -atoms will be within reach. The latter might open the door to the vertical bar S vertical bar = 3 world in strangeness nuclear physics, by the study of the hadronic Omega(-) -nucleus interaction. For the first time it will be possible to study the behavior of Xi(+) in nuclear systems under well controlled conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Abstract: Single-event upsets in the configuration memory of the 28-nm Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA, used in the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter, have been studied. Results from neutron and proton irradiations at energies up to 184 MeV are presented and compared with previous experimental results. In order to gain information about the energy-dependence of the single-event upset cross section, a GEANT4-based Monte Carlo simulation of upset mechanisms in nanometric silicon volumes has been developed. The results from this model are shown to agree with the experimental data for both neutrons and protons. Knowledge about the energy dependence of the cross section and of the particle flux at the location of the front-end modules in PANDA enables better estimates of the mean time between failures in the electromagnetic calorimeter. At PANDA, a total neutron flux of 1·102 cm− 2 s− 1 at the location of the front-end modules is expected at the lowest antipro-ton beam momentum and a luminosity of 1·1031 cm− 2 s− 1, leading to a predicted Mean Time Between Failures of 47±10 hours per FPGA in the electromagnetic calorimeter.

Abstract: In this work, the performance of a proposed algorithm to search for clusters in the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC) in real time, which provides vital information for the online event selection procedure, is discussed. Two implementations will be discussed and compared to each other and to a third, less suited algorithm (at least, as far as online usage is concerned). After this, the implementation in the readout hardware and concepts for the following data collection network will be presented.

Abstract: Scanning probe microscopy is at the verge of revolutionizing microscopy once again. Video-rate scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and video-rate atomic force microscope (AFM) technology will enable the direct observation of many dynamic processes that are impossible to observe today, such as atom or molecule diffusion, real time film growth, or catalytic reactions. In this paper we discuss the critical aspects that have to be taken into account when working on increasing the imaging speed of scanning probe microscopes. We highlight the state-of-the-art developments in the control of the piezoelectric scanning elements and describe the latest innovations regarding the design and construction of the whole mechanical loop including new scanner geometries. We identify critical aspects for which no obvious solution exists and aspects where advanced control engineering can help, like piezo non-linearities, the acceleration limit and the challenging technical requirements for the preamplifiers that are needed for measuring a tunneling current. Finally, we provide an overview of a number of new directions that are being pursued to solve the problems currently encountered in scanning probe technology.

Abstract: Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($��N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $��N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to ��^+��^- ��^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos��_{��^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract: A simple, efficient, and robust on-line data-processing scheme was developed for the digital front-end electronics of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the PANDA spectrometer at FAIR, Darmstadt. The implementation of the processing algorithm in FPGA enables the construction of an almost dead-time free data acquisition system. The prototype of a complete trigger-less readout chain has been developed and evaluated. The precision of time synchronisation commands has been verified. A pile-up recovery algorithm was developed and evaluated over a large dynamic range of signal amplitudes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

12. Improving the accuracy of walking piezo motors

Abstract: Many application areas require ultraprecise, stiff, and compact actuator systems with a high positioning resolution in combination with a large range as well as a high holding and pushing force. One promising solution to meet these conflicting requirements is a walking piezo motor that works with two pairs of piezo elements such that the movement is taken over by one pair, once the other pair reaches its maximum travel distance. A resolution in the pm-range can be achieved, if operating the motor within the travel range of one piezo pair. However, applying the typical walking drive signals, we measure jumps in the displacement up to 2.4 μm, when the movement is given over from one piezo pair to the other. We analyze the reason for these large jumps and propose improved drive signals. The implementation of our new drive signals reduces the jumps to less than 42 nm and makes the motor ideally suitable to operate as a coarse approach motor in an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. The rigidity of the motor is reflected in its high pushing force of 6.4 N.

Abstract: This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the $\bar{P}$ANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole $\bar{P}$ANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Abstract: The PANDA collaboration at the future FAIR facility at Darmstadt, Germany, will employ antiproton annihilations to investigate resonances in the charmonium mass region. In order to gain high flexibility for physics event selection, a readout system without hardware trigger, i.e. a trigger-less data-acquisition system will be employed and is currently being developed. The event-selection is based on high-level reconstructed information, e.g. invariant mass, secondary vertices, and time correlations, which may be contributed from all sub-detector systems. Prototypes of the PANDA Electromagnetic Calorimeter have been exploited to verify the desired event-selection approach. The prototype readout system includes a dedicated Sampling ADC (SADC), data concentrator (DCON) and compute-node (CN) modules. An optical link connects several SADC digitizers to a DCON module from where the data are streamed to the CN network. Data, collected by the SADCs are processed online in FPGAs by a feature-extraction algorithm. This processing technique guarantees a dead-time free operation and allows including an on-line pile-up recovery process for single detector counting rates up to 1 MHz. The prototype of the readout-chain has been evaluated using pulse generators and high-energy photon beams; the proper event correlation could be verified. The applied FPGA has been irradiated with protons to demonstrate its applicability in the radiation environment of the PANDA experiment.

Abstract: The PANDA experiment at the future FAIR facility at Darmstadt, Germany, will employ a novel electronics-readout concept: the trigger-less readout. This concept implies an event selection based on the physics properties of detected particles, such as reconstructed invariant mass or a detected secondary vertex. Such an approach requires a completely new design of the readout chain from the front-end to the data acquisition. This paper describes a fully-functional prototype of the readout chain for one of the PANDA subdetectors - the Electromagnetic Calorimeter. The prototype consists of digitizer and data-multiplexer modules. The crucial component of the prototype is the synchronous optical-link connection, which allows to transfer clock signal and time-synchronisation commands in an unambiguous way. The implementation and performance tests of the synchronous optical-link connection are described in the paper.

Abstract: An instrument is described for the measurement of circular and linear polarizations of the luminescence with a time resolution up to 50 ns. The spectrometer, which makes use of a 50-kHz photoelastic modulator and a differential photon-counting technique, is accurate and absolute and is capable of detecting small degrees of polarization. Making use of excitation light pulses which lie randomly in the modulator's duty cycle, the instrument can be readily interfaced with a variety of externally triggered or free running pulsed light sources.

Abstract: An instrument is described for time-resolved (TR) detection of circular polarisation of the luminescence (CPL). The TR-CPL spectrometer combines the optical part of a commercially available gated photon-counting spectrofluorimeter with the differential photon-counting system of a home-built continuous-wave (CW) CPL instrument described previously. The resulting spectrometer is sensitive and accurate, and allows for the determination of circular (and linear) polarisation data in the time domain 10 mu s-100 ms. Similarly, a CW photon-counting spectrofluorimeter can be transformed into a high performance CPL spectrometer.

Abstract: In this article we introduce a, video-rate, control system that can be used with any type of scanning probe microscope, and that allows frame rates up to 200images∕s. These electronics are capable of measuring in a fast, completely analog mode as well as in the more conventional digital mode. The latter allows measurements at low speeds and options, such as, e.g., atom manipulation, current–voltage spectroscopy, or force–distance curves. For scanning tunneling microscope (STM) application we implemented a hybrid mode between the well-known constant-height and constant-current modes. This hybrid mode not only increases the maximum speed at which the surface can be imaged, but also improves the resolution at lower speeds. Acceptable image quality at high speeds could only be obtained by pushing the performance of each individual part of the electronics to its limit: we developed a preamplifier with a bandwidth of 600kHz, a feedback electronics with a bandwidth of 1MHz, a home-built bus structure for the fas...

Abstract: The physical properties of the top soil vary greatly within short distances. Therefore, to obtain a representative average, it should be necessary to measure soil shear strength at a great number of sites, scattered over the plot. A measuring device that suits this purpose should preferably be portable and easy to dismantle. There should be no contact between the surrounding soil and the outer wall of the shear head in order to avoid soil-metal friction. Moreover, soil disturb ance in forcing the shear head into the soil should be avoided. From experience with Sohne's standard laboratory shear apparatus1'3 it appeared that a cylindrical shear head with radial fins gives reliable results.
