We present a detailed study of the Planck-selected binary galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 (G165; z = 0.348). A multiband photometric catalog is generated incorporating new imaging from the Large Binocular Telescope/Large Binocular Camera and Spitzer/IRAC to existing imaging. To cope with the different image characteristics, robust methods are applied in the extraction of the matched-aperture photometry. Photometric redshifts are estimated for 143 galaxies in the 4 arcmin2 field of overlap covered by these data. We confirm that strong-lensing effects yield 30 images of 11 background galaxies, of which we contribute new photometric redshift estimates for three image multiplicities. These constraints enable the construction of a revised lens model with a total mass of M600 kpc = (2.36 ± 0.23) × 1014 M⊙. In parallel, new spectroscopy using MMT/Binospec and archival data contributes thirteen galaxies that meet our velocity and transverse radius criteria for cluster membership. The two cluster components have a pair-wise velocity of ≲100 km s−1, favoring an orientation in the plane of the sky with a transverse velocity of 100–1700 km s−1. At the same time, the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) is offset in velocity from the systemic mean value, suggesting dynamical disturbance. New LOFAR and Very Large Array data uncover head-tail radio galaxies in the BCG and a large red galaxy in the northeast component. The first deep field images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) of the galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 reveal a wealth of new lensed images at uncharted infrared wavelengths, with unprecedented depth and resolution. Here we securely identify 14 new sets of multiply imaged galaxies totaling 42 images, adding to the five sets of bright and multiply imaged galaxies already known from Hubble Space Telescope data. We find examples of arcs crossing critical curves, allowing detailed community follow-up, such as JWST spectroscopy for precise redshift determinations, and measurements of the chemical abundances and of the detailed internal gas dynamics of very distant, young galaxies. One such arc contains a pair of compact knots that are magnified by a factor of hundreds, and features a microlensed transient. We also detect an Einstein cross candidate only visible thanks to JWST's superb resolution. Our parametric lens model is available through the following link (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gwup2lvks0jsqe5/AAC2RRSKce0aX-lIFCc9vhBXa?dl=0) and will be regularly updated using additional spectroscopic redshifts. The model is constrained by 16 of these sets of multiply imaged galaxies, three of which have spectroscopic redshifts, and reproduces the multiple images to better than an rms of 0farcs5, allowing for accurate magnification estimates of high-redshift galaxies. The intracluster light extends beyond the cluster members, exhibiting large-scale features that suggest a significant past dynamical disturbance. Submillimeter bright galaxies in the early Universe are vigorously forming stars at ~1000 times higher rate than the Milky Way. A large fraction of stars is formed in the central 1 kiloparsec region, that is comparable in size to massive, quiescent galaxies found at the peak of the cosmic star formation history, and eventually the core of giant elliptical galaxies in the present-day Universe. However, the physical and kinematic properties inside a compact starburst core are poorly understood because dissecting it requires angular resolution even higher than the Hubble Space Telescope can offer. Here we report 550 parsec-resolution observations of gas and dust in the brightest unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3. We map out for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of molecular gas inside the heavily dust-obscured core. The gas distribution is clumpy while the underlying disk is rotation-supported. Exploiting the high-quality map of molecular gas mass surface density, we find a strong evidence that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable, implying that the self-gravity of gas overcomes the differential rotation and the internal pressure by stellar radiation feedback. The observed molecular gas would be consumed by star formation in a timescale of 100 million years, that is comparable to those in merging starburst galaxies. Our results suggest that the most extreme starburst in the early Universe originates from efficient star formation due to a gravitational instability in the central 2 kpc region., Published in Nature on August 30 2018 (submitted version)

NGC 4631 is an interacting galaxy that exhibits one of the largest, gaseous halos observed among edge-on galaxies. We aim to examine the synchrotron and cosmic-ray propagation properties of its disk and halo emission with new radio continuum data. Radio continuum observations of NGC 4631 were performed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at C-band (5.99 GHz) in the C and D array configurations, and at L-band (1.57 GHz) in the B, C, and D array configurations. Complementary observations of NGC 4631 with the Effelsberg telescope were performed at 1.42 and 4.85 GHz. The interferometric total intensity data were combined with the single-dish Effelsberg data in order to recover the missing large-scale total power emission. The thermal and nonthermal components of the total radio emission were separated by estimating the thermal contribution through the extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ emission. The H$\alpha$ radiation was corrected for extinction using a linear combination of the observed H$\alpha$ and 24 $\mu$m data. NGC 4631 has a global thermal fraction at 5.99 (1.57) GHz of 14$\pm$3% (5.4$\pm$1.1%). The mean scale heights of the total emission in the radio halo (thick disk) at 5.99 (1.57) GHz are $1.79\pm0.54$ kpc ($1.75\pm0.27$ kpc) and have about the same values for the synchrotron emission. The total magnetic field of NGC 4631 has a mean strength of $\rm{\langle B_{eq}\rangle} \simeq 9 \rm{\mu G}$ in the disk, and a mean strength of $\rm{\langle B_{eq}\rangle}~\simeq 7~\rm{\mu G}$ in the halo. We also studied a double-lobed background radio galaxy southwest of NGC 4631, which is an FR~II radio galaxy according to the distribution of spectral index across the lobes. From the halo scale heights we estimated that the radio halo is escape-dominated with convective cosmic ray propagation, and conclude that there is a galactic wind in the halo of NGC 4631., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted to be published in A&A

NGC 4631 is an interacting galaxy which exhibits one of the largest gaseous halos observed among edge-on galaxies. We aim to examine the synchrotron and polarization properties of its disk and halo emission with new radio continuum data. Radio continuum observations of NGC 4631 were performed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at C-band (5.99 GHz) in the C & D array configurations, and at L-band (1.57 GHz) in the B, C, & D array configurations. The Rotation Measure Synthesis algorithm was utilized to derive the polarization properties. We detected linearly polarized emission at C-band and L-band. The magnetic field in the halo is characterized by strong vertical components above and below the central region of the galaxy. The magnetic field in the disk is only clearly seen in the eastern side of NGC 4631, where it is parallel to the plane of the major axis of the galaxy. We detected for the first time a large-scale, smooth Faraday depth pattern in a halo of an external spiral galaxy, which implies the existence of a regular (coherent) magnetic field. A quasi-periodic pattern in Faraday depth with field reversals was found in the northern halo of the galaxy. The field reversals in the northern halo of NGC 4631, together with the observed polarization angles, indicate giant magnetic ropes (GMRs) with alternating directions. We report the detection of the far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line of singly ionised nitrogen, \Nplusa, within the peak epoch of galaxy assembly, from a strongly lensed galaxy, hereafter ``The Red Radio Ring''; the RRR, at z = 2.55. We combine new observations of the ground-state and mid-J transitions of CO (J$_{\rm up} =$ 1,5,8), and the FIR spectral energy distribution (SED), to explore the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) properties of the RRR. All line profiles suggest that the HII regions, traced by \Nplusa, and the (diffuse and dense) molecular gas, traced by the CO, are co-spatial when averaged over kpc-sized regions. Using its mid-IR-to-millimetre (mm) SED, we derive a non-negligible dust attenuation of the \Nplusa line emission. Assuming a uniform dust screen approximation results a mean molecular gas column density $> 10^{24}$\, cm$^{-2}$, with a molecular gas-to-dust mass ratio of 100. It is clear that dust attenuation corrections should be accounted for when studying FIR fine-structure lines in such systems. The attenuation corrected ratio of $L_{\rm NII205} / L_{\rm IR(8-1000��m)} = 2.7 \times 10^{-4}$ is consistent with the dispersion of local and $z >$ 4 SFGs. We find that the lower-limit, \Nplusa -based star-formation rate (SFR) is less than the IR-derived SFR by a factor of four. Finally, the dust SED, CO line SED and $L_{\rm NII205}$ line-to-IR luminosity ratio of the RRR is consistent with a starburst-powered ISM., 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We report on C-band (5 - 7 GHz) observations of the galaxy, NGC~2992, from the CHANG-ES sample. This galaxy displays an embedded nuclear double-lobed radio morphology within its spiral disk, as revealed in linearly polarized emission but {\it not} in total intensity emission. The radio lobes are kpc-sized, similar to what has been observed in the past for other Seyfert galaxies, and show ordered magnetic fields. NGC~2992 has shown previous evidence for AGN-related activity, but not the linearly polarized radio features that we present here. We draw attention to this galaxy as the first clear example (and prototype) of bipolar radio outflow that is revealed in linearly polarized emission only. Such polarization observations, which are unobscured by dust, provide a new tool for uncovering hidden weak AGN activity which may otherwise be masked by brighter unpolarized emission within which it is embedded. The radio lobes observed in NGC~2992 are interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium and offer new opportunities to investigate the interactions between nuclear outflows and the ISM in nearby galaxies. We also compare the radio emission with a new CHANDRA X-ray image of this galaxy. A new CHANG-ES image of NGC~3079 is also briefly shown as another example as to how much more obvious radio lobes appear in linear polarization as opposed to total intensity., 23 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRAS
