The discovery of the high-affinity, high-specificity folate receptor in mamalian kidney cells, coupled with the ability of folate to enter cells by folate receptor-mediated endocytosis and the subsequent elucidation of the folate receptor’s overexpression in specific cancer cell types; heralded the arrival of the area of chemotherapeutic folate targeting. The application of purely organic folate-based small-molecule drug conjugates that selectively target the folate receptor, which is over expressed in several diseases such as cancer, is well established. The application of inorganic folate-targeted drugs offers significant potential to expand and enhance this therapeutic approach. From the data made available to date, it is apparent that this aspect of inorganic medicinal chemistry is in its youth but has the capability to contribute greatly to cancer research, both in therapy and diagnosis. The union of folate-receptor targeting and inorganic medicine may also lead to the development of treatments for disorders such as chronic-inflammation, tuberculosis, neurodegenerative disease and leishmaniasis. In this review, we summarize what is known about the coordination chemistry of folic acid and the therapeutic potential of such complexes. We also describe approaches adopted to conjugate platinum drugs to folate- or folate-carrier- systems and their prospective ability to overcome problems associated with unwanted side-effects and resistance by improving their delivery and/or selectivity. The literature pertaining to non-platinum metal complex conjugates with folic acid is also reviewed revealing that this is an area that offers significant potential to develop targeted therapeutic approaches in areas such as chemotherapy and molecular imaging for diagnostics.

Exploiting solar energy using photo-thermal (PT) and/or hybridised photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) systems can represent a viable alternative to the growing demand for renewable energy. For large-scale implementation, such systems require thermal fluids able to enhance the combined conversion efficiency achievable by controlling the &lsquo, thermal&rsquo, and &lsquo, electrical&rsquo, components of the solar spectrum. Nanofluids are typically employed for these purposes and they should exhibit high heat-transfer capabilities and optical properties tuned towards the peak performance spectral window of the photovoltaic (PV) component. In this work, novel nanofluids, composed of highly luminescent organic molecules and Ag nanoparticles dispersed within a base fluid, were tested for PT and PVT applications. These nanofluids were designed to mimic the behaviour of luminescent down-shifting molecules while offering enhanced thermo-physical characteristics over the host base fluid. The nanofluids&rsquo, conversion efficiency was evaluated under a standard AM1.5G weighted solar spectrum. The results revealed that the Ag nanoparticles&rsquo, inclusion in the composite fluid has the potential to improve the total solar energy conversion. The nanoparticles&rsquo, presence minimizes the losses in the electrical power component of the PVT systems as the thermal conversion increases. The enhanced performances recorded suggest that these nanofluids could represent suitable candidates for solar energy conversion applications.

Luminescent downshifting (LDS), a passive design approach, focused on improving the short-wavelength response of photovoltaic technologies through the application of retrofitted photoluminescence layers has undergone a recent renaissance. Previously limited by the lack of viable candidates, the recent advancements in synthetic chemistry and nanomaterials have renewed interest in the once dormant application. In this work, a series of 30 phenanthroline-based heteroaromatic ligands were evaluated in terms of their optical properties and suitability for LDS applications. Three of the materials fulfilled the criteria for inclusion in LDS devices, displaying luminescent quantum yields in the range of 0.80–0.95: with the structures absorbing heavily over the 300–500 nm range. Given the active role of ligands in sensitizing metal coordination centres, during the formation of coordination complexes, the ligands catalogued and evaluated herein could provide a welcome breath of renewed interest in the application of LDS layers to a range of commercial and noncommercial photovoltaic technologies. Other molecules within the family of ligands catalogued, showcased a large degree of non-radiative energy transfer, making them potential candidates for solar thermal applications, whereby localized heat generation and transfer is a favourable consideration.

Hybridised photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) systems, obtained by merging photo-voltaic (PV) and photo-thermal (PT) technologies, can lead to enhanced conversion efficiencies. Liquid spectral beam splitters (SBSs) offer control of the ‘thermal’ and ‘electrical’ components of the solar spectrum. Combining PVT systems with liquid SBSs facilitates enhanced control of the thermal and electrical outputs, further improving the PVT systems efficiency and making them economically viable. Traditionally, liquid SBSs contain nanostructures suspended in a base-fluid to capitalise on the enhanced heat transfer capabilities offered by the nanostructures' surface morphology. These nanofluids have certain disadvantages, such as stability problems, environmental hazards and synthetic cost concerns, which preclude them from becoming a viable substitute for commercial (single-phase) fluids. This study offers an alternative strategy by employing a set of newly developed fluids containing organic and organometallic imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline derivatives for SBS-PVT systems. These new working fluids were designed to mimic the behaviour of luminescent down-shifting (LDS) molecules while offering enhanced thermophysical characteristics over the host base-fluid. Their optical, fluorescent and thermophysical properties enabled an increased heating rate within the working fluid. Their integration as working fluids in an SBS-PVT system lead to optical efficiencies of ~63% i.e. an 18%–20% improvement over the standalone PV technology. The fluid properties displayed a 61% increase in the economic value of the energy captured when compared to the host base-fluid alone for the same PVT system. Consequently, these novel fluids and the organic molecules they contain can be effectively designed as high performance spectrally selective fluids for PVT applications.

Candida haemulonii, Candida haemulonii var. vulnera and Candida duobushaemulonii, which form the C. haemulonii complex, are emerging etiologic agents of fungal infections known to be resistant to the most commonly used antifungals. The well-established anti-Candida potential of metal complexes containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands encouraged us to evaluate different copper(II), manganese(II), and silver(I) phen chelates for their ability to inhibit planktonic growth and biofilm of C. haemulonii species complex. Two novel coordination complexes, {[Cu(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)2].3H2O.EtOH}n and [Ag2(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)4].EtOH (3,6,9-tddaH2 = 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid), were synthesized in a similar fashion to the other, previously documented, sixteen copper(II), manganese(II), and silver(I) chelates employed herein. Three isolates of each C. haemulonii species complex were used and the effect of the metal chelates on viability was determined utilizing the CLSI standard protocol and on biofilm-growing cells using the XTT assay. Cytotoxicity of the chelates was evaluated by the MTT assay, employing lung epithelial cells. The majority of the metal chelates were capable of interfering with the viability of planktonic-growing cells of all the fungal isolates. The silver complexes were the most effective drugs (overall geometric mean of the minimum inhibitory concentration (GM-MIC) ranged from 0.26 to 2.16 μM), followed by the manganese (overall GM-MIC ranged from 0.87 to 10.71 μM) and copper (overall GM-MIC ranged from 3.37 to >72 μM) chelates. The manganese chelates (CC50 values ranged from 234.51 to >512 μM) were the least toxic to the mammalian cells, followed by the silver (CC50 values ranged from 2.07 to 13.63 μM) and copper (CC50 values ranged from 0.53 to 3.86 μM) compounds. When tested against mature biofilms, the chelates were less active, with MICs ranging from 2- to 33-fold higher levels when compared to the planktonic MIC counterparts. Importantly, manganese(II), copper(II), and silver(I) phen chelates are relatively cheap and easy to synthesize and they offer significant antifungal chemotherapeutic potential for the treatment of highly resistant pathogens.
